Masai Mara 

The Masai Mara is situated in south-west Kenya and is one of Africa’s Greatest Wildlife Reserves.Maasai Mara National Reserve stretches 1,510 sq. km (580 sq. miles) and raises 1,500-2,170 meters above sea level. Add the conservancies and the area is at least twice the size. It hosts over 95 species of mammals and over 570 recorded species of birds.

It is about 270 km from the capital Nairobi City and takes approximately 4-5 hours by road or 40-45 minutes by air. 

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located in Loitoktok District, Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq. mi) in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq. mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border.

It is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free ranging elephants-among other wildlife species-and offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Tsavo National Parks

Tsavo is made up of two separate parks, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Located in Coast Province of Kenya in between Nairobi City and Mombasa. Tsavo is nearly 22,000km2, being the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. The park was split into two due to the railway going from Mombasa to the interior of Kenya.Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest parks in Kenya, located South East of Kenya near the Town of Voi in the Taita-Taveta District of Coast Province, inland from the Coast, it is 13,747 sq.km.

While the Tsavo West National Park is also located in the Coast Province of Kenya covering an area of 9,065 sq.km. 

The slightly larger Tsavo East is generally flat, with dry plains across which the Galana River flows. Other features include the Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls.

Tsavo West Features

Tsavo West National Park is more mountainous and wetter than its counterpart, with swamps, Lake Jipe and the Mzima Springs. It is known for bird life and for its large mammal’s e.g. black rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, hippo and Masai lion. 

There are also other smaller animals that can be spotted in the park, such as the bush baby, hartebeest, lesser kudu and Maasai giraffe.

Take a cooling swim in the glorious Indian Ocean at one of the many stunning beaches that the paradise of Kenya has to offer.

Watamu 

Watamu is a small coastal town in Kenya, north of Mombasa. It is known for Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve which has 3 bays: Watamu, Blue Lagoon and Turtle. Sandy beaches and coral gardens are the defining features. Seabirds, as well as green and hawksbill turtles, inhabit Mida Creek with its sand flats and mangrove forest. Inland, Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve is home to elephants, monkeys, and rare birdlife.

Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Galana River, lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya.

It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts. Malindi Marine National Park is home to turtles and colorful fish. 

Diani Beach 

Diani Beach is a major beach on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is located 30 kilometres south of Mombasa, in the nearby Kwale County. It has been voted Africa's leading beach destination for the fifth time running since 2015. Palm trees & palapas line this trendy white-sand resort area with clear water and nearby eateries.

Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Nairobi.

You'll be transferred from the Nairobi Airport to Giraffe Manor, a boutique hotel set on private land that is home to a number of endangered Rothschild giraffes.

Today you have at leisure spending your time at Giraffe Manor. You can relax in the gardens and just enjoy being with these very special creatures.

You will be taken to Wilson Airport this morning for your flight north to Samburu. A driver-guide will meet you on arrival and take you on a morning safari back to your lodge. Settle in and enjoy the superb views before heading off for your first taste of safari this afternoon.

Enjoy a full day on safari from Saruni Samburu today. There are two activities available each day, and you can choose whether to head off on a traditional safari, night drive or walking safari.

Morning or afternoon safaris are a great way to explore further afield and see some of the bigger wildlife, whereas the walks are a good chance to learn more about the smaller creatures in the ecosystem, enjoying the birdlife and tracking animals by their footprints.

After breakfast, you will have time for a short morning safari on your way back to the airstrip for your flight south to the Masai Mara. After lunch, once you've settled in, you can head out on an afternoon safari activity and explore this fantastic conservancy.

On safari in the Mara. You can enjoy morning and afternoon safari drives from your camp as well as short walking safaris, night drives and sundowners out in the open. As the camp is situated in a private conservancy within the Mara, the number of camps and vehicles here is strictly limited, giving you by far the best safari experience away from the busier areas of the park.

The Masai Mara is big cat country, so keep your eyes peeled for lion, cheetah and, of course, the very elusive leopard.

Another day exploring more of the Mara from Asilia Naboisho Camp. The guides here are superb and will be keen to ensure you see as much as possible during your time. If there is certain wildlife in particular that you're keen to see, do let your guide know so they can try to take you to the right areas.

Today you will depart from the Mara by light aircraft for the coast. On arrival, you will be met and transferred a short distance to your beach hotel, where you can relax and unwind after your safari.

Today you can simply relax on the beach after your safari and do as much or as little as you like.

Today you might like to head into Diani and spend some time exploring the lovely little shops and numerous great restaurants in the area.

During your stay, you may want to arrange to go snorkelling. You can take a trip in a traditional wooden dhow to the coral reef just off the coast where you can enjoy exploring the beautiful underwater life.

Your final day at leisure on the coast. You may wish to indulge in a relaxing spa treatment or simply chill out on the beach.

You will be collected from your hotel and taken to Mombasa Airport for your onward flights today.

Arrive home today to complete your journey.

What a fantastic trip! It was so well organized and planned, we were able to just relax and enjoy our vacation. It was a one-month journey to Africa, visiting Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. We always felt taken care of. The safari portion of our trip could not have been more perfect. We were able to see the animals from very near on night drives and bush walks, with very few other jeeps to disturb the environment. The private concessions are an amazing way to truly experience the animals. We also explored Cape Town on a number of fantastic private tours. We watched the southern right whales off the coast of Hermanus, tasted some delicious wines in the Winelands, explored charming small towns, tried local cuisine, hiked Table Mountain, and so much more. Our travel team planned the trip to perfection.

Group from Canada - Fantastic experience & beyond our expectations!

I escorted a group from Canada and when asked about the highlights of our East Africa safari experience, I honestly don’t know where to start. Every single day offered something new and exciting that we completely didn’t expect. We had a gentleman in our group that pretty much summed it up. On day two, he called me over jokingly with a complaint about the view from his tent. It was obstructed by a herd of elephant. He was beyond words with excitement when he and his wife arrived at their accommodations and looked out. The experience just kept getting better.

Our group had cancelled and rescheduled twice due to Covid and the service and assistance by the owner Alan Dixson and his team was exceptional. In comparison to the many other suppliers we work with, they are one of the BEST.

Paula, our group coordinator, was always quick to respond, detailed, and friendly to work with. In fact, we are working with Paula with other groups because she is that GREAT!

Going on a safari is a trip of a lifetime, don’t be misled by those offering an unbelievable low price. We saw firsthand what a cheap safari looks like. While on a game drive a minivan was stuck in the mud with 8 guests inside. I’m sure they were happy when they booked and saved, but they looked hot and miserable that day. Especially looking at us standing up with open hatched roofs in 8-seater Land Cruisers.

Great City Day Tour

Great experience in Kenya

The safari tour was amazing - the guides knew the area very well and were very knowledgeable. Our main guide was Morris (sp?), and he was fantastic. He knew detailed information about all animals that we came across, and also shared with us interesting facts about the various areas we drove through. Service throughout the trip was excellent. Communication was good, considering how big of a group we had, and that we were booking from abroad. Our needs were accommodated, and our expectations were met. The trip was well-organized, and guides were flexible, allowing us to change the itinerary slightly when we needed to. While we enjoyed the food at all of the lodges, some of the packed lunches en route could have been better. Overall, we had a good experience and we would book with Lets Go Travel again.

All we asked for, wanted and more!

I started planning our celebratory safari and beach holiday to Kenya for all eleven of our family in 2019 - then Covid struck. 2020 was postponed to 2021 and then we finally made it in 2022. Throughout this long preparatory period, with many changes and challenges due to postponements caused by Covid, Paula Okello, my contact at Let's Go Travel, was brilliant - patient, understanding and extremely helpful as well as being an excellent communicator, nothing phased her. When we finally made it, despite a complicated and involved itinerary, there was not a single hitch and absolutely everything went off perfectly. Our two driver/guides, Simon and Alex, were fantastic. They were extremely pleasant and friendly with a great sense of humour and our five grandchildren just loved being with them. They were also very good drivers and have an in-depth knowledge of birds as well as the animals. Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a kenya safari.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When's the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals year-round and enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a safari in Kenya?

Loose, light layers in neutral colours are the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide . 

What type of food will be served on a safari in Kenya?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook travelling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my mobile phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.
