Kettler ErgoRace and World Tours software – First look

Race your mates on virtual courses

With the northern hemisphere winter approaching again, keen riders will be looking for options to ride indoors. German company Kettler's ErgoRace trainer and Kettler World Tours software may just fit the bill.

The £1,299 ErgoRace is a standalone indoor bike that uses an electro-magnetic brake system to provide resistance. It's quiet enough to be used without disturbing your neighbours, which is an important consideration with any indoor trainer.

The bars offer two positions: bull horns and tri-bar extensions with arm rests. The bars and saddle are adjustable using pull-out knobs, which means you're limited to the nearest hole setting. The feet are also adjustable in case you have an uneven floor. The trainer comes with combination SPD and flat pedals, but these can be swapped for your own.

There's also an LCD screen attached to the bars, which gives you speed, distance, time, heart rate and power output (it can handle up to 1,100 watts), and you have the choice of 16 gears.

Where the ErgoRace differs from most indoor trainers is in the Kettler World Tours software, which costs an additional £149 – although Kettler will be offering it for free this December and January. Unfortunately the software is not available for Apple Mac - it's only for Windows at the moment.

The software enables you to hook the trainer up to a television or laptop and ride on virtual courses which are displayed using Microsoft Bing maps. The courses are just GPX or KML files that are easily imported into the software, which means you can create them using a GPS device or a route mapping site like Bikely.com .

Even better, for those of you who need that extra motivation, if you've got an internet connection you can race against your friends over any given course. All you have to do is sign up and create a race on the Kettler World Tours website , set a date and time for the race, and invite your friends or leave it open to anyone to participate.

At the allotted time, it's game on and you can see how far ahead or behind you are compared to the rest of the field. Virtual bragging rights and a solid workout all in one – definitely a winner.

A word of caution though: if you're a powerful rider you might find yourself running out of gears, especially on the downhill sections!

KETTLER WORLD TOURS offers different types of training.

• Speed/Incline based programs for treadmills

The PWC and IPN tests are part of the test programs.   PWC (Physical Working Capacity)   The PWC test works out the performance in watts at a certain heart rate. WORLD TOURS offers various versions of the test with different step heights and lengths, as well as different heart rates.

• PWC 130 level 50 watts - 3 minutes
• PWC 150 level 25 watts - 2 minutes
• PWC 150 level 50 watts - 3 minutes
• PWC 170 level 25 watts - 2 minutes
• PWC 170 level 50 watts - 3 minutes
• Full capacity level 25 watts - 2 minutes
• Full capacity level 50 watts - 3 minutes
• Selectable level

The full capacity tests always go to the selected user's maximum heart rate.   The Selectable level program asks you to select the step height and length and target heart rate and create a new program.

IPN fitness test

The IPN is basically an endurance test. This endurance test should allow you to assess your stamina in an easy, low-risk way and provide information for your ideal training heart rate and individual training monitoring (Coaching programs).   An acclimatisation phase of 4 x 30 minutes is recommended within 2 weeks before the first test. During this phase, it is recommended that you train at an intensity you are comfortable with. You should initially try to reach a step frequency of 50-60 RPM.   The first test should be done when you feel relaxed and do not have any serious health problems (at least one rest day with no training is recommended beforehand) and should be carried out using an even step frequency (recommended 50-60 RPM). You should already have established your resting heart rate beforehand by calculating the average value from at least 3 measurements taken immediately after waking up.   The next test should be carried out again after 12 weeks or 24 coaching sessions at the latest.   Your resting heart rate should be calculated again for this.   User data   The following user information is required for the test:

This information can be stored in your user profile .   The test

The Test program is made up of 5 performance levels. These are customised to the user data and the target heart rate.

For the test to be valid, the first step must be reached without exceeding your target heart rate and at least the second step must be completed. If the second step is not reached the details under Training activity must be decreased. If the target heart rate is also not reached in the 5th level, the test is also invalid. In these cases, the details under Training activities must be increased and the test must be repeated.

Once the test has been completed successfully, the cardio fitness score and the heart rate ranges for fat burning training, basic training and speed training are worked out.

The coaching programs are available after the test. The IPN result of the last test can be viewed in the coaching programs.

2 coaching methods are available: health training and improved performance.   24 individual programs are available for each method. 2 programs a week are recommended in health training. 3 programs a week are recommended with improved performance. A new test should be carried out once you have completed all programs or 12 weeks have elapsed.   The coaching programs are heart rate controlled programs with a recommended RPM. Breaks are included in some programs. You must continue pedalling during the break.

These programs can only be used with exercise bikes. The exercise bike is controlled using performance profiles. The time or distance can be used as the basis depending on the program. The programmes can be individuallymodified.

A special feature the program offers is Training record . This is continuous and is extended after each step, allowing for customised training. Performance modifications are only possible using the control panel (panel) or the PC keyboard's arrow keys .

With heart rate controlled programs, the performance or speed and incline is calculated using heart rate control. The heart rate control can be configured in Training settings . The programmes can be individually modified .

The Set target pulse program allows you to enter a target pulse before you start training and then it records a profile, similarly to the Training record .

Speed/Incline based programs

Courses with speed and incline profiles are used for treadmills. The programmes can be individually modified .

A special feature the program offers is Training record . This is continuous and is extended after each step, allowing for customised training. Speed and incline changes are only possible using the control panel or PC's keyboard.

Braking level programs

The exercise bike's brakes are switched to the RPM controlled mode in the braking level programs. The program is no longer controlled by the performance but the level. The performance achieved depends on the level and RPM.

Tours are based on an elevation profile modelled on a real tour. For the visual display the tour is given geographical coordinates to illustrate the course on Bing maps. Your own position is calculated by working out the distance covered. This is applied 1:1 with treadmills. With exercise bikes KETTLER WORLD TOURS adds another gearset in between. The exercise bike's braking performance is worked out from the incline and speed.

Tours can also include a real life video which is synchronised with the course. This is played faster or slower depending on the speed so that your own position on the course is synchronised with the video image.

Only tours from KETTLER WORLD TOURS can be used in Online mode .

Trace Public Transport through a Mobile App

The new application is now tested; it will become available for Moscow’s residents and guests in March. The program will include information about public transport routes and the arrival exact time. You will be able to lay any route, remember it, mark any stop or put a «reminder» for your route with the help of a new application. The information will come to the application from the Public Transport Coordination Center, which is mediating between citizens and GLONASS. In addition, about a thousand electronic scoreboards will be installed at the bus stops to display the arrival time of the nearest bus, trolleybus or tram by the end of summer.

The State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery (usually being called Tretyakovka) is an art gallery in Moscow, specialized in Russian visual arts and it’s one of the world’s biggest collections. The Gallery is named after Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, Moscow merchant and patron of arts, and it’s been bearing his name with proud and gratitude for over a hundred years. In 1856 Tretyakov started his collection by acquiring two works by Russian artists, "Skirmish with Finnish Smugglers" by V.G. Khudyakov and "The Temptation" by N. G. Schilder.

Hi anyone can recommend a good and reliable app to use for taxis during the upcoming world cup?

Direct I guess you will have to go by cab.

Otherwise it´s Aeroexpress to Belorussia station,from there metro to Paveletskaya and from there another Aeroexpress train.

Uber, Gett, Yandex Taxi.

A lot of drivers don't speak English tho, be ready.

Get a local number with internet access and use google voice translate. That will solve 95% translation issues.

Score 50% Off Hotel Stays Around the World Thanks to Hopper — When to Book

Summer is almost here, and travel booking app Hopper is making it easier to score a great deal on a getaway with a three day sale offering up to 50 percent off hotels.

The sale, which can be booked from 12 a.m. ET on May 8 through 3 a.m. ET on May 10, is available in more than 40 popular summer destinations from Orlando and Nashville to Paris, Rome, and beyond, Hopper shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale is only available to book through the Hopper app.

"The busy summer travel season is approaching fast,” Hayley Berg, a lead economist with Hopper, told T+L. “In order to get a good deal, we recommend travelers book summer trips no later than mid-May to score the best savings.”

Travelers can save up to 50 percent off hotels in South Lake Tahoe, Prague, and Sydney, according to Hopper. Or save up to 40 percent off hotels for an epic beach vacation in the Cayman Islands or in the Dominican Republic.

Escape to the mountains with 30 percent off hotels in Denver, or head to Europe and save 30 percent off hotels in Paris, London, or Rome. Trips to major cities in the United States are also on sale with travelers able to save up to 25 percent off hotels in Washington D.C., up to 20 percent off hotels in Boston, and up to 15 percent off hotels in Miami.

The sale comes as summer flight prices are expected to rise this month with peak prices coming at the end of May and into early June. When it comes to trips in the U.S., travelers are searching for hotels in “smaller, more off the beaten track cities and towns” this summer, like Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Cody, Wyoming, and Bar Harbor, Maine.

The sale also makes a great last-minute Mother’s Day present since Hopper offers gift cards for flights, hotels, rental cars, and home rental bookings.

In a perfect world, we’d prefer to eliminate the unpredictability of the elements of an outdoor sport in favor of data sets that help us understand what our eyes are witnessing. But golf is an imperfect pursuit.

At the end of every round and eventually the tournament, there could be a little to learn about the experience, so even if it doesn’t go your way, that’s still something to take forward for the next time the roof is open.

Since Monday’s Power Rankings, in which I always review the weather for the first time every week, the risk of inclement weather for Thursday’s opening round has increased. It includes a very good chance for thunderstorms. Because of the danger, bet the over on a delay at some point. Friday’s forecast is more favorable.

When this happens, it can be shrewd to stack based on the draw in DFS. While blending in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf is advised for the long haul, short-range considerations all but demand betting on the coin flip. You’re already in shark-infested waters, so you might as well jump in with a plan to sink or swim. Treading is only for also-rans.

Another change in the last two days is when the wind will challenge most. Power Rankings wild card

Keith Mitchell (+375 = Top 10) … Cashmere Keith has been a top-20 machine in 2024 and he hasn’t gone consecutive starts without one in his last eight starts. Prior to a T28 with Joel Dahmen at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Mitchell placed T14 at the Valero Texas Open for his sixth top 20 of the season. He remains a rock star off the tee and on approach, so the challenge has been wringing consistency out of the putter. Both of his previous appearances at TPC Craig Ranch were when it played as a par 72 (2021 and 2022) and he averaged 69.25. To consider qualifying for next week’s Wells Fargo Championship, he’d need to podium this week, but this finish would be just fine for us.

Other notables

Aaron Rai (+160 = Top English) … Man, what to do with this guy. The Brit always presents so attractively but he isn’t plus value for a finish unless you shop in the market for top 20s at +225, and he’s had only two of those in a dozen starts this year. That’s why to beat five others among his countrymen is the smarter move. (At +350, Matt Wallace is second-shortest among the subset.) Sits 13th on TOUR in greens hit and T32 in proximity.

Daniel Berger (+130 = Top 40) … At some point, he’ll be reinserted into the option to make or miss the cut, but we can’t complain about the kickback for this finish. No, he hasn’t reconnected with the firepower that pushed him to the front of the stage, but if you’re going to hedge on when he’s going to deliver again, you might as well lean in when his only finish at TPC Craig Ranch is a T3 in 2021. The long game is back so you’re relying on this being the week when he (finally) finds magic with the putter. Two top 40s in nine starts this season.

Taiga Semikawa (+225 = Top 40) … With Peter Kuest hogging the headlines among non-members at TPC Craig Ranch, it’s easy to overlook the 23-year-old from Japan who’s making his fourth PGA TOUR start of the season. He’s making the trip from a T24 at the ISPS HANDA CHAMPIONSHIP but his youth is a weapon against jet lag. He’s already a four-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour where he placed second in the Order of Merit in 2023. Notable WDs

Patrick Rodgers … This is his second early withdrawal of the season (WM Phoenix) to go with his mid-tournament exit from the Valero Texas Open, but he’s 37th in the FedExCup with three top 10s among six top 25s. Look for him as well at Quail Hollow Club next week.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout … A T3 at the ISPS HANDA CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan on Sunday lifted the South African to 53rd in the Official World Golf Ranking, so he’s in terrific position to qualify for the U.S. Open when the top 60 gain entry at the conclusion of the PGA Championship for which he’ll qualify via the OWGR early next week. He also might sneak into the field at next week’s Wells Fargo Championship via the Aon Next 10, in which he’s currently ninth.

Charley Hoffman … Rests after a T4-T11 fortnight that lifted him to 59th in the FedExCup. Suffice it to say that the 47-year-old has capitalized on the opportunities yielded by long-range insurance of a career earnings exemption this season.

Membership notes

Erik Barnes … Will Zalatoris is a headliner among the comeback stories in 2024, but Barnes deserves similar attention. Now almost 13 full months post-reconstructive surgery on the MPFL in his left knee, he’s 87th in the FedExCup with a playoff loss at the Puerto Rico Open punctuating six paydays in nine starts. Has eight starts on a medical extension to collect 46.563 FedExCup points. (He’s closest to his goal among all golfers on medicals.) That would require no worse than a solo 19th-place finish (worth 47 points) at TPC Craig Ranch where he’s making his debut. Because he’s already cleared the threshold for conditional status, he’s eligible for the Playoffs even if he falls short of the target on the medical, but fulfilling the medical would promote him from the graduate reshuffle category to the Major Medical category. It also would grant him the opportunity to tee it up in every open without sweating the cutline for entry on conditional status.
