Wells Fargo prize money: Rory McIlroy closing on Phil Mickelson for second in all-time Tour earnings

Rory McIlroy has now won the Wells Fargo Championship four times . But never has it been worth more — at least, financially — than on this occasion.

This year's edition was a signature event on the Tour schedule, with a $20 million purse and $3.6 million to the winner. That haul takes McIlroy's Wells Fargo career total to $9,463,076.

With $86.6 million in official career Tour earnings, McIlroy is now $10 million from surpassing Phil Mickelson for second on the all-time list. Tiger Woods is first with $121 million.

Here's a look at the purse payout in the no-cut event in Charlotte, North Carolina:

Netflix’s sports documentary series on the world-famous Tour de France is back for a second season, with eight new episodes set to land on Netflix globally on June 11th, 2024. The series will go behind the scenes of the 110th edition of the cycling race, which Jonas Vingegaard ultimately won for the third year in a row.

Before the release of season 1 on June 8th, 2023, it was announced that Tour de France: Unchained had already received a second season order . Cycling Weekly was the first to report that the documentary series would cover the 2023 race, which occurred between July 1st and 23rd, 2023.

Per Netflix, the new season will consist of another eight episodes, with the streamer providing the following tidbits about the new season:

“This new season goes behind the scenes of the 21 stages of Tour de France 2023: amid the scandals, low blows and thirst for glory; amid the dramatic falls and historic breakaways; amid the withdrawals and desire to win: the series dives back into the fierce battle of the riders for the yellow jersey!”

The new season will continue in its first season footsteps, with interviews with everyone in various teams, picking the riders’ brains and the people behind the teams.

Unlike most of the other sports documentaries that have flooded onto Netflix recently, Tour de France: Unchained is in a co-distribution deal with France Télévisions, which will carry it in France.

Box to Box Films is the production company behind Netflix’s co-distribution release. It has pioneered the sports docuseries over the past few years, starting out with Formula 1: Drive to Survive , which is currently in production with its seventh season . They’re also behind Six Nations: Full Contact , which has been given a second season order, plus Break Point , which has concluded after 1 season, and Full Swing , currently awaiting a season 3 renewal.

For more on Netflix’s upcoming sports documentary lineup , keep it locked here on What’s on Netflix.

Now, we’ll leave you with some newly released pictures of the second season of Tour de France: Unchained .

2024 PGA Championship field: Here’s who’s playing at Valhalla

The 2024 PGA Championship is taking place this week at Valhalla Golf Club. Here's who's competing in this year's field.

Getty Images

Major season is officially in full swing. This week, the men head to Louisville, Ky., for the playing of the second major of the year as the 2024 PGA Championship is contested at Valhalla Golf Club.

Brooks Koepka hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy last spring as he captured his third PGA Championship title, and this year he’ll look to make it four in seven years. But if he hopes to win his sixth career major, he’ll have to overcome a stacked field of competitors.

Scottie Scheffler, fresh off the birth of his first child, will look to continue his historic run and win a second major in a row, while Rory McIlroy heads to Valhalla coming off his second victory of the season.

The PGA Championship, unlike the other three majors, does not have any amateurs in the field, nor is there open qualifying. Every player who tees it up this week is in the professional ranks.

You can find the full list of participants below.

2024 NBA Playoffs - Indiana Pacers v New York Knicks

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 14: Jalen Brunson #11 of the New York Knicks celebrates during the game against the Indiana Pacers during Round 2 Game 5 of the 2024 NBA Playoffs on May 14, 2024 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. For two games, watching the Knicks felt more like watching a Walking Dead episode than an NBA game. They were limping around and the bodies were piling up.

Back home in the electric energy of Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, the Knicks surged back to life.

Jalen Brunson showed his struggles were more about his foot injury — which looked nonexistent on Tuesday — than any defensive adjustment by the Pacers as he went off for 44 points.

Jalen Brunson rose to the occasion in Game 5 to help the @nyknicks take a 3-2 series lead at The Garden! 🗽 44 PTS 🗽 7 AST 🗽 4 REB 🗽 18-35 FGM #NBAPlayoffs presented by Google Pixel pic.twitter.com/zWgsQSY6FL — NBA (@NBA) May 15, 2024

It sparked a dominant Knicks performance, who pulled away in the second quarter and never looked back, winning 121-91. That puts the Knicks up 3-2 in the series and sets up a potential closeout game Friday night in Indiana.

It wasn’t just Brunson who found his form again, everything that worked for the Knicks in the first two games seemed to return. New York owned the glass and finished with 20 offensive rebounds — 10 of them from Isaiah Hartenstein, who had his best game of the series. New York’s defense was physical and aggressive again. Josh Hart was taking the ball coast-to-coast and finished with 18 points.

The offensive rebounds and the forced turnovers (18 turnovers for the Pacers) led to the Knicks taking 29 more shot attempts. That was the difference.

Things got ugly for Indiana starting the first quarter, and by the second 12 minutes the rout was on.

The Pacers were completely rattled in the first half, and everything they did right during the previous two games at home came apart under pressure in Madison Square Garden. In the first half alone the Knicks had 38 points in the paint (16 more than the Pacers), turned nine Pacers turnovers into 14 points, and the Knicks had 12 offensive rebounds — New York got a second chance on 50% of their missed shots in the half.

New York led by 15 at the half and never looked back.

Indiana made a third-quarter run and cut the lead to seven, and then, in the blink of an eye, it was 20 again, thanks to Knicks offensive rebounds and Pacers blown defensive assignments that left shooters wide open.

If Indiana is going to extend this series Friday night at home, it needs a lot more from Tyrese Haliburton. He was simply too passive, looking to pass and set up teammates rather than score and the result was neither happened. Haliburton finished with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with five assists — he has to take command of Game 6. Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 22.

Alfred University unveils power grid training lab

three people, two men and a women, one cutting a ribbon

With several key representatives from the utilities industry on hand, Alfred University on Wednesday, May 8, unveiled a new facility that will be used to prepare students for careers in the growing renewable energy industry.

Alfred University has received a $466,853 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) which will support student internships and fund a program that provides short course training for renewable energy engineering students and workers in the electric utilities field. In addition, the University has received a donation from GE Vernova of $2,786,000 in power grid planning and operations software to support the NYSERDA-funded project.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony, with representatives of GE Vernova, NYSERDA, EPRI, and regional power companies on hand, was held in the McMahon Engineering Building, and was followed by a tour of the new lab.

“Sustainability is one of our most pressing issues,” Mark Zupan, Alfred University president. “We thank GE Vernova and NYSERDA for providing us with a significant lever to help solve those problems.”

“We’re excited to be here to launch this lab,” Joe Franz, senior director of Advance Technology Organization with GE Vernova, commented. “We look forward to meeting these challenges with Alfred University.”

The University was initially awarded $786,000 in Advanced Energy Management System (AEMS) and Advanced Distribution Management Solutions (ADMS) software packages from GE Vernova, to be used in 2023-24, the first year of the project. GE Vernova has since awarded the University an additional $2 million in software, which will be used over the ensuing five-year period.

The program—to which the University will provide $117,000 of in-kind/cost share funding—will benefit students in the Alfred University Inamori School of Engineering’s Renewable Energy Engineering and Electric Engineering programs by providing them with access to state-of-the-art equipment and training. The NYSERDA workforce training grant will support student internships—22 over the next three years—as well as fund the purchase two microgrid control systems, which will be located in the new lab in McMahon Engineering Building and be used as a training tool for students. It will also the allow the University to subcontract with the EPRI, an independent, non-profit research and development organization, to conduct industry-standard training short courses for students.

Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of the AVANGRID companies Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) and New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), was also on hand to make remarks. Nilsen, a 1988 Alfred University graduate of Alfred University with a bachelor’s degree in English, spoke of the importance of educating the “next generation” of power grid operators.

“It is important we prepare for a future with a network of renewables,” Nilsen said. “This way, we are doing it from the ground up, giving people the training they need, so they can better understand this amazing field.”

John Simmins ’84, PhD ’90, executive director of Alfred University’s Center for Advanced Technology, referred to the ribbon-cutting ceremony as a “very Alfred event,” noting the attendance of such accomplished Alfred University alumni as Nilsen, John Edmond ’83, co-founder of semi-conductor manufacturer Wolfspeed and an Alfred University Board of Trustees member, and Scott Misture, ’90, ’94, Inamori Professor of materials science and engineering.

“There are a lot of people who helped make this happen,” Simmins said, referring to Inamori School of Engineering Dean Gabrielle Gaustad ’04, who he thanked for her support and guidance. He also thanked NYSERDA, GE Vernova, and EPRI “for their generosity and for providing the means for this project,” and credited Xingwu Wang, professor of electrical engineering, for his work in spearheading the endeavor.

“This lab will be a huge benefit for the region. Our students will be able to walk into a place like RG&E and NYSEG and contribute immediately,” Simmins said. “Alfred University is committed to providing the utilities of New York State a pipeline (of workers and educational resources) they can count on for years to come.”

2024 PGA Championship odds, predictions, picks: Tiger Woods projection by top golf model that hit the Masters

Tiger woods, an 82-time pga tour winner, is expected to be part of the 2024 pga championship field at valhalla golf club.

kurt nilsen tour 2023

Only five golfers have completed the grand slam of winning all four major titles, and Jordan Spieth has another chance to become number six. The 30-year-old has been a PGA Championship shy of completing the grand slam since winning the Open Championship in 2017. Spieth finished third in 2019 and second in 2015, his only top-10 results in 11 PGA Championships. He'll have another shot at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, which tees off Thursday. Spieth is 33-1 in the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds.

Tiger Woods was the last golfer to complete the grand slam and Woods will compete in the 2024 PGA Championship field. Woods finished 60th at the 2024 Masters after a poor third round. Woods has 125-1 2024 PGA Championship odds to win, which would be his 16th major and fifth PGA Championship. Before locking in your 2024 PGA Championship picks or Tiger Woods props, be sure to  see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise: Justin Thomas, a 40-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas, a two-time major winner, won both at the PGA Championship. Most recently, Thomas defeated Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win the 2022 PGA Championship and also won in 2017. After a rough 2023 season, Thomas' putter has helped him perform better this year, ranking eighth in birdie average and 11th in putting average.

Comparatively, Thomas was 46th in birdie average and 122nd in putting average last season. Thomas was once one of the most dominant golfers in the sport, winning 12 PGA Tour events from 2016 to 2020, but his last victory came at the 2022 PGA Championship. There are signs this season of a turnaround for Thomas and at 40-1 to capture another PGA Championship, the model sees value in his PGA Championship odds 2024.

The model has also examined where Tiger Woods finishes. Since suffering a gruesome leg injury in a single-car accident in February 2021, Woods has played sporadically. He has made seven worldwide starts over the last two years and had to withdraw from three of those because of either injury or illness. However, he has made it a point to try to play at courses that have been of historical significance to him and could be feeling nostalgic at Valhalla.

Woods beat Bob May in a playoff to win his fifth career major championship and his second PGA Championship in 2000 and when he won the 2001 Masters eight months later, he became the first player in history to hold all four major titles at once. Tiger put together two solid rounds to open the 2024 Masters, but struggled over the weekend. However, completing a four-round event should serve as a confidence boost and Valhalla should be an easier walk for Woods than Augusta was.  The model just locked in its Tiger Woods PGA Championship picks here. .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .
