No! To work on most cruise lines you do not need to be an American citizen. This is because most cruise lines are foreign flagged and thus are not regulated by United States labor laws. So in many cases, cruise lines can hire people from any country they choose.

There are a handful of cruise ships that are flagged in the United States and hire almost all their crew from the United States. These cruise ship usually sail around Hawaii, Alaska, the Great Lakes or on US rivers. We cover all of the US flagged and foreign flagged cruise ships in the members section of CruiseJobFinder.

Comparing Work: Cruise Ships vs. Land-based Jobs

land based jobs cruise industry

Working on a cruise ship has many visible advantages and disadvantages compared to working on land. As they always say, the grass looks greener in the neighbor's lot. I have spent nearly ten years working on a cruise ship, and I always tried to focus on the positive aspects. One of the main differences between working on the cruise ship and working on the land is that you don't need to commute to work. That is a huge advantage; you don't have to spend 1 hour traveling to get to work.

Maybe the most significant advantage of working on the land is that no matter how stressful a day at work you have, you will still see your friends and family after your work is finished. That is a major advantage compared to working on a cruise ship. There were many days when I felt stressed, anxious, and depressed, I wanted to see my family and friends and have a drink with them, but when you work on a cruise ship, you might need to wait up to 9 months to see your friends and family again.

Whatever perspective you are looking at, the truth is that work on the cruise ship offers numerous unique experiences, and sometimes only that traveling experience justifies the work.

Every job has advantages and disadvantages, and working on cruise ships is no different.

Cruise ship crew life can be intense: long working hours, no days off for months, lots of rules, demanding guests, small living quarters, and little to no privacy.

But working on ships also allows you to travel to places you only dream of while making amazing connections with fellow seafarers from all over the world. Despite all the ups and downs of ship life, I wouldn't change a thing. You can party all night over international waters, fall asleep to the sound of the ocean, and wake up in a completely different country.

You'll often hear crew members joking that they're never coming back, that this is their last contract.

But the truth is that more often than not, we somehow always come crawling back for just one more contract because once you get a taste for life at sea, living anywhere else isn't the same.

Pros of Working on Cruise Ships

You get paid to travel.

This sounds idealistic, but it's true. As crew members, we get paid to travel. Well, not only to travel but also to work. But regardless of the job itself, the fact is that you travel around the world while working on a cruise ship. In my own experience, I traveled to more than 30 countries while working on a cruise ship and visited some of the most beautiful places in the world. This is a strong advantage because we live only once, and the work on a cruise ship is sometimes an excellent way to explore Earth for free.

Little to no cost of living

On ships, you live where you work.

Unlike life on land, no rent must be paid, or monthly utility bills must be taken care of.

All basic living expenses are covered at sea for crew members: accommodation, water, electricity, and food. You don't have to worry about paying your electricity, water, and gas bills.

Free medical care

On the cruise ship, we don't pay for any medical care as it's included in our contracts with the cruise line company.

CV/Resume boost

Working on cruise ships requires a lot of skills that make crew members some of the most eligible employment candidates:

•International experience and the ability to work with a diverse team.

•Skills in customer service and crisis management.

•The capability of learning quickly.

•Most of all, their mental strength makes crew members stand out.

•It's not easy to work long hours for months, isolated from land, friends, and family.

•But if you can do that, there's not much else you're not psychologically capable of.

The Cons of Working on Cruise Ships

•No days off.

•On ships, weekends and holidays don't exist.

•You work every day of the entire contract and have hours off between shifts each day.

•On land, you can go hard on a Friday night and have a couple of days to recover.

•On ships, you still have to get up and go to work the next day.

You work long hours.

The most I ever clocked in a day was about 15 hours, but this will vary according to the job position and possibly whether or not it's a busy cruise.

Most crew members work anywhere from 9-11+ hours daily, the average amount being on the higher end of the spectrum.

Shifts are also split, so you might start work in the morning and not finish for the day until late at night.

You're on call 24/7

Every crew member is responsible for responding to designated emergencies: medical, fire, security threats, man overboard, etc.

No matter where you are or what time it is, when the announcement is made, you have roughly seven minutes to get to your emergency station.

In the shower? Better get dressed. On the other side of the ship? Run.

In my three years onboard, I've been woken four times in the early morning hours between 2-5 a.m. to my emergency call, which I then had to run up ten decks and the entire length of the ship to reach my response station.

And once the emergency was over, I still had to go to work at the regularly scheduled time just a few hours later.

Small living quarters

land based jobs cruise industry

If you think guest cabins are small, wait until you see what crew cabins look like.

Your room will generally be small unless you're a higher-ranked staff or officer.

Most crew typically live with one other roommate in a cabin that is just large enough for the absolute basics: a bunked bed, a small table with a couple of dresser drawers and shelves, two small wardrobe closets, and a restroom where you can shit, shower, and shave all at the same time.

land based jobs cruise industry

If you're a taller or larger person, crew cabins can be claustrophobic inducing and extremely uncomfortable.

It's a bit military-esque

land based jobs cruise industry

Everything is highly regulated, and there are a lot of rules:

What you're allowed to do.

Where you're allowed to be.

Even what you're allowed to wear.

There's a dress code for everything: day, night, formal, smart casual, all black.

Cabins are inspected regularly, and beds must be made. If we fail, our supervisors are notified.

land based jobs cruise industry

Disciplinary action is super formal: verbal warnings, written warnings, hearings with the master (or staff captain), and dismissal.

Your privileges depend on how many stripes you have (your rank).

There are typically three tiers in the ship's social hierarchy: officer, staff, and crew members.

Most of the ships have separate messes, one for officers and staff and another for the crew.

Depending on your position, you may be allowed to be seen around the ship in public areas such as the shops or eating at one of the restaurants.

You're always "on stage."

Prepare to smile a lot and always be "on" around guests.

Even if you're off duty and walking through public areas of the ship, you are still a working employee if guests stop you from asking you a question or need help. Sometimes, I would go to my cabin to massage my own cheeks, too much pain from fake smiling to the guests.

Ship life affects your hormones and health.

Blame it on the recycled air, the desalinated water, the fluctuating food quality, high stress, or close living quarters, but your health may take a hit while working on ships.

Internet is limited and expensive

land based jobs cruise industry

I've had so many guests ask me if crew members get free Wi-Fi and the truth is that our internet packages actually tend to be more expensive than the guests'.

While other package options exist for more time or over an extended period, the price per hour is generally about the same.

You rarely have control over your assignments.

For many crew positions, you won't be able to request a specific ship or itinerary for several years.

And even then, your preference request might not be granted.

You usually stay with the same ship for the entirety of your contract, but there are cases where you might be abruptly transferred to another ship, and there's nothing you can do about it.

They might give you less than 24 hours' notice.

Long-term relationships are difficult to sustain

Most relationships between crew members are short and limited to the length of the contract.

While getting a following ship assignment together is possible, it is very difficult and often unlikely.

Of course, this varies by company, but in my experience, couples need to submit official paperwork that proves they are in a formal, legally binding relationship. Even then, there is no guarantee that crew couples can be placed on the same ship.

Overall, working on the cruise ship is an unbelievably valuable experience. It is beautiful and bitter at the same time.

Maritime Careers – Land Based

If working on a ship isn’t for you, don’t worry – you can still sink your teeth into the maritime world. There are simply thousands of related jobs for land lovers. Or, alternatively, maybe you’re interested in working in a water-related field, but not on a ship. How about a job at a maritime museum somewhere in the world?

The world of marine science , preservation, and exploration is booming.

On the following pages we profile these positions in detail:

Getting Cargo Off Ships at Ports Around the World is an Essential Part of the Maritime Industry

  • Longshoreman
  • Marine Surveyor
  • Federal Maritime Jobs

To get you started, however, here is a list of interesting land-based positions in the maritime industry.

Shipping/Workboat Related Jobs:

Port manager: Ports need managers in order to regulate schedules. In this position, you’ll maintain contact with all the ships coming in and out of your port, as well as manage the dockhands, tugboat workers, and others involved with keeping the port operating.

Ship Superintendent: Shipping companies often have entire fleets, sometimes with dozens of ships. The superintendent, who is sometimes the owner of the fleet, keeps track of which ships are hauling what where.

Marine Surveying Jobs: Surveying in the maritime world requires advanced education, but this business can be very lucrative. If you enjoy the navigation part of this industry, surveying may be good for you.

Maritime Lawyers: Just like with most industries, there are a number of lawsuits in the maritime industry every year. If you have a background in law and you love working near the water, this is an ideal career choice.

Shipbuilding: For those interested in engineering or construction, the shipbuilding industry might work well for you. As new ships are needed, you’ll work to design them, taking into account that they need to float while carrying a certain amount of weight and working to incorporate the latest in technology.

Marine Biology: Most kids go through a phase of wanting to be a marine biologist around the time they first see a dolphin show or visit an aquarium, but there’s no reason to “grow out” of this phase if you love science and the water.

The seas are home to a number of interesting plants and animals, and if you work as a marine biologist, you’ll get to do things like study sea creature behavior, work to preserve the environment, and explore the depths of the ocean.

Drayage/Harbor Trucking: When cargos arrive in port they are generally placed on trucks or trains for delivery to customers throughout the country. Drayage and trucking companies hire organize the clearance and shipment of cargo, and hire truckers to delivery it.

Customs Brokers: According to U.S. Customs there are over 11,000 licensed customs brokers in the United States. These brokers assist importers and exporters to meet customs requirements governing products entering and leaving the U.S. This is an enormous industry that offers many jobs. The work requires a working knowledge of entry procedures, duties and taxes and classification and valuation of goods entering and leaving the country. You can find additional information regarding the requirements for customs brokerage at the USCBP website , or by visiting the website of the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America .

Ship Chandlers: Today’s cargo ships are not afforded much time in port, and must do their shopping quickly to ensure they have all necessary provisions onboard prior to departure. Ship chandlers provide ships of all kinds with a one stop shopping center for ordering food and supplies that can be quickly delivered to the ship while alongside. Every port has a list of such companies that offer warehousing and delivery jobs .

Marine Technicians: Although every ship has an engineering crew dedicated to the maintenance of the mechanical and electrical systems onboard, it is impossible for them to be experts at fixing every problem. There are hundreds of companies hired by ships to provide engineering and electrical support and expertise to avoid delays and keep ships moving from port to port. Below are links to a few companies providing such services:

Radio Holland Sperry Marine ABB Turbo

Shipyards & Drydocks: Ship yards and dry docks offer an additional employment avenue for welders, engineers and electricians. Every large port will contain at least one shipyard or dry dock facility employing in these positions. Below are a few examples in the Pacific Northwest:

Todd Pacific Shipyard Lake Union Drydock Everett Shipyard

Maritime Schools and Academies: With the present training and certification requirements for the merchant marine industry there is a huge demand for schools and academies offering such courses. If you have the necessary experience and interest in teaching, Maritime schools and academies need individuals able to teach these courses.

Cruise Leaders Chart Path for Unprecedented Growth

T he cruise industry faces immediate challenges that include an industry-wide goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2050. Yet the segment’s success in attracting vacationers has skyrocketed to an unprecedented level, said cruise line leaders gathered this week at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach.

“For the industry and certainly for us, the demand profile is unprecedented,” said Josh Weinstein, Carnival Corp. & plc’s CEO, during the conference’s “State of the Industry” discussion.

“Our outlook for 2024 [includes] record yields, record demand [and] record passengers carried,” said Weinstein. “And as amazing as that is, our bookings for 2025 are better than they were at this point last year for 2024.”

Indeed, the Carnival chief said cruising has eclipsed its post-pandemic resurgence. “The concept of pent-up demand for cruising is gone,” said Weinstein. “This is natural demand because we all provide amazing experiences.”

Weinstein added that the cruising’s value versus land vacations has increased significantly during the recent leisure travel boom.

The cruise experience versus “what has happened in many, many land-based alternatives is that the service levels today versus before 2020 are not close anymore,” Weinstein said. “It gives us a huge opportunity to really excel and get that incremental demand.”

“We see the [cruise industry’s] strength globally,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Cruises.

Cruise Bookings Rebound

“[Bookings] are coming back in different parts of the world, with the same logic [of] value for money and the experience we offer our holidaymakers,” he said.

Vago added that the expansion of U.S. homeports in the last several years has also benefited the industry. “Cruises are coming closer to home, and that’s also a facilitator for customers to come and try the experience,” he said.

“We have a lot of newcomers, and this is promising because it looks like the numbers will be on the rise, and obviously the supply will drive the demand,” added Vago.

The major cruise lines are showing their confidence in consumers’ desire to cruise via new ship orders that have Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian ordering a total of 34 ships collectively in the current decade.

“Demand is incredibly robust, the onboard product is fantastic, and guests are coming back with repeat rates at historically high levels,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings which announced an order for eight new ships Monday.

“This gives us an incredible optimism for the future,” Sommer said. “We can continue to [build] larger, more efficient ships that not only help our financial position but also help us deliver world-class experiences to our guests.”

Fuel Forecast

With future passenger growth on the upswing, cruise operators are looking to tackle challenges led by the industry’s stated goal of reaching zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As seminar moderator Anne Kalosh noted, the cruise industry “has gone far in developing new technologies and practices” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but, “now it’s down to the fuels."

“There’s still a lot more opportunity for us to continue to evolve all of the technologies that support our ships as well as the infrastructure on land [including] shore power,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)’s chairman.

“Fortunately, we have many, many parties here today that help us accelerate ways to reduce the amount of fuel we burn as well as reduce emissions. But that’s only going to solve so much,” said Liberty.

“We need to make sure we have fuel sources that allow us to be able to burn and get to a net zero position, which is the goal of the industry,” he said.

Added Liberty, “We need to know where those fuel sources are going to be, we need to know what they’re going to be, they need to be available to us [and they need to be scalable] and they also need to be affordable.”

Liberty said that the process will take time. “This is a journey,” he said. “We need governmental support, we need the support of many of our suppliers, we need the infrastructure to be in place and we need to know where we’re skating to,” he said.

“With that clarity I’m very confident not just in the industry, but with the maritime cluster we have here today, that we will be able to find a solution to get to a net zero position.”

Cruise lines are additionally challenged to meet the European Union’s own goal of attaining carbon-neutral emissions by 2050, which would apply to cruise operators in European ports.

“The problem is [the European Union] is not doing it in line with the rest of the world,” said MSC’s Vago. “We don’t have a global approach to see how to de-carbonize industries [including] the maritime industry.”

However, Vago endorsed the European mandate as “It will be a good benchmark for the rest of the world to understand what is coming up.”

“It occurred to us how many regulations there that govern the cruise industry,” said Norwegian’s Sommer. “If we were to focus on the goal as opposed to mandating specific steps, we would reach that goal much easier and in a much quicker process,” he said.

“We perhaps need to take a slightly longer-term approach to this with governments,” said Sommer, “[to] partner with us to truly accomplish our goal of decarbonization.”

The environmental goals may impact cruise itineraries, said Carnival’s Weinstein. “A cruise ship is like driving your car. If you go slower and you go shorter distances, generally speaking, you use less fuel and you emit less greenhouse gases,” he said.

“To some extent, that is a component of how we are going to continue to reduce our emissions footprint. But ultimately, we are a business, and sustainability is not just about environmental impact,” added Weinstein.

“The concept is about how do you get there in a way that businesses can be sustained,” he added. “Everything we do has to be a balance.”

Russian floating nuclear power plant set for first refuel

The new Russian nuclear power plant, named Akademik Lomonosov, is the only floating one of its kind in the world.

Nuclear fuel has been delivered to the world’s first floating nuclear power plant, which is located in Pevek in the Chukotka region of north-east Russia. The plant, named Akademik Lomonosov, supplies heat and power to the town and is based on two KLT-40S reactors generating 35MW each.

The fuel was delivered to the site by TVEL, Rosatom’s fuel division, via the Northern Sea Route and manufactured by TVEL’s Elektrostal Machine-Building Plant in the Moscow region.

According to TVEL, unlike land-based reactors that require replacement of a proportion of their fuel rods every 12–18 months, “the refuelling takes place once every few years and incudes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor”. As such, there can be up to three and a half years between refuelling.

Akademik Lomonosov first became operational in December 2019. At the time the reactor was seen as a pilot project for a future fleet of floating nuclear power plants and onshore installations based on Russian-made small modular reactors. Due to their functionality, they are intended for deployment in disparate areas of Russia’s north and far-east. The operable reactor was named after 18 th century Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov , who was the first native Russian to be appointed to the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1742.

The plant is 144m long and 30m wide. It supplies electricity to the town of Pevek, which has a population of around 4,000, but could potentially supply a city of up to 100,000 people. Rosatom is currently constructing four floating power units, which it plans to export.

In June, Andrey Nikipelov, Rosatom’s deputy director-general for mechanical engineering and industrial solutions, said : “In addition to environmental friendliness and stable operation, floating nuclear power units are able to provide energy independence – both from the main power grids and, in a broader sense, protection from the volatility of energy markets… floating power units have great commercial potential both in Russia and abroad.”

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

land based jobs cruise industry

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
