List of Led Zeppelin concert tours

led zeppelin tours 1968

From September 1968 until the summer of 1980, English rock band Led Zeppelin were one of the world's most popular live music acts, performing hundreds of sold-out concerts around the world.

Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Led Zeppelin made numerous concert tours of the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe in particular. They performed over 600 concerts, initially playing small clubs and ballrooms and then, as their popularity increased, larger venues and arenas as well.

In the early years of their existence, Led Zeppelin made a concerted effort to establish themselves as a compelling live music act. As was recalled by bass player John Paul Jones :

[Led] Zeppelin was a live band and that's how we got our reputation. The press hated us in the early days. Our only way of promotion was to play a lot of live shows, especially in the UK. It used to spread by word-of-mouth.

However, though the band made several early tours of the UK, the majority of Led Zeppelin's live concerts were performed in the United States, which was settled on as the primary foundation for their fame and accomplishment. In 1969, for example, all but 33 of the band's 139 shows were performed in the U.S., and between the years 1968 and 1971 they made no fewer than nine tours of North America. "It felt like a vacuum and we'd arrived to fill it", guitarist Jimmy Page once told journalist Cameron Crowe . "It was like a tornado, and it went rolling across the country." After touring almost incessantly during its early years, Led Zeppelin later limited its tour appearances to alternating years: 1973, 1975, 1977 and 1979.

From the early 1970s, the commercial and popular drawing power of Led Zeppelin was such that the band began to embark on major stadium tours which attracted vast crowds, more than they had previously performed to. During their 1973 tour of the United States , they played to 56,800 fans at Tampa Stadium , Florida , breaking the record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. Similar crowds were drawn on Led Zeppelin's subsequent U.S. tours, and they continued to break attendance records (on April 30, 1977 they played to 76,229 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome , Michigan , a world record attendance for a solo indoor attraction). It is for these reasons that Led Zeppelin, as much as any other band or artist in this era, is credited for helping to establish what has come to be known as stadium rock . Many critics attribute the band's rapid rise as much to their tremendous appeal as a live act as they do to the quality of their studio albums.

Led Zeppelin also performed at several music festivals over the years, including the Atlanta International and the Texas International Pop Festivals in 1969, the Bath Festival of Blues in 1969 and the next one in 1970, the " Days on the Green " in Oakland, California in 1977, and the Knebworth Music Festival in 1979.

Characteristics

Led Zeppelin's reputation as a compelling live act is often attributed to the tight understanding and musical chemistry achieved between all four group members, combined with a shared willingness to try new things on-stage, which resulted in dynamic, unpredictable performances. As is noted by Led Zeppelin archivists Dave Lewis and Simon Pallett:

Led Zeppelin live was an extraordinary animal. From the very beginning no two performances were alike. Such was the creative spark between the four that the basic structures of their songs were repeatedly reworked, extended and improvised on, making their studio counterparts almost unrecognisable.

Led Zeppelin have been described as the kind of group that actually rehearsed on stage, experimenting with the reaction of the audiences to new material and letting the pieces mature through the live experience. Several tracks from their albums were debuted on stage well before their official release on vinyl . Jimmy Page himself has said that most of the band's songs were designed for live performance.

Every show we did was different. You never knew when you went onstage what you might do by the end of it ... Once a song was recorded, and it went into the set, it began to mutate. The whole improvisational aspect, the riffs coming out of the ether ... it was a magical vehicle collectively soaring into the stratosphere. And as more albums came out, the set got longer and longer.

In an interview he gave to Uncut magazine in 2005, Page elaborated:

The beauty of playing in the band was that when we went onstage we never actually knew what was going to go on within the framework of the songs. They were constantly changing. New parts would come out on the night. The spontaneity was on the level of ESP , which meant it was always exciting.

As described by Cameron Crowe, "[Led] Zeppelin live was a direct descendant from Elvis' early shows. Raw, direct, a reminder of when rock was young."

With such shared enthusiasm for playing a diverse range of musical styles coupled with their emphasis on extended improvisation, Led Zeppelin's concerts frequently extended for several hours. Recalled Jones:

Things got extended a lot to keep ourselves from going mad. Every tour we tried to cut it down, especially in the later years. We'd say we're only going to play an-hour-and-a-half. After a week, it would creep back up to two hours. By the end of the tour it's three hours!

After their 1977 tour of the U.S. — their last major tour — the band chose to abandon much of the "mystical" image that surrounded them up to that point. Instead members would wear ordinary street clothes during their concerts and the setlist was toned down by excluding long, elaborate solo numbers like Bonham's "Moby Dick" and Page's trademark bowed guitar solo accompanied by a laser show.

Recordings and live concert footage

Many of the band's shows have been preserved as Led Zeppelin bootleg recordings , which continue to be prized by collectors and fans. In addition, footage of Led Zeppelin concerts has been released officially on the band's 1973 concert film The Song Remains the Same , and on the Led Zeppelin DVD (2003). However, unlike other artists of the era such as The Who and The Rolling Stones , comparatively little official concert footage exists of Led Zeppelin. This is largely because of the successful efforts of manager Peter Grant to limit the exposure of the band to television appearances, in order to encourage fans who wanted to see the band to attend Led Zeppelin concerts. Of the few professionally shot concerts the band did, (excluding their July 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden on The Song Remains the Same ) six are today available to fans through bootlegs. These concerts include the last two nights of their five-concert run at Earls Court Arena in London in May 1975, their show in Seattle's Kingdome in 1977 and their two shows at Knebworth in August 1979. In addition to these, their Royal Albert Hall performance from January 1970 is available.

Concert tour chronology

Reunion concerts.

Since Led Zeppelin disbanded following the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, the three surviving members of the band have reunited publicly on-stage on just a few occasions.

  • On July 13, 1985, at the Live Aid concert at JFK Stadium , Philadelphia . Tony Thompson and Phil Collins both played drums on all three songs. For the last song, "Stairway to Heaven", Paul Martinez played bass, while John Paul Jones moved to keyboards. The band was introduced on stage by Phil Collins as "my three friends" (not as Led Zeppelin). Concert programmes did not mention the name Led Zeppelin.
  • On May 14, 1988, at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, with Bonham's son, Jason Bonham , on drums.
  • On January 12, 1995, at Led Zeppelin's induction into the United States Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Their performance included five songs and variously featured vocalist Steven Tyler and guitarists Joe Perry and Neil Young . Jason Bonham played drums on the first four songs, while Page and Plant drummer Michael Lee played them on the final song, "When The Levee Breaks".
  • On December 10, 2007, at the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert at The O 2 in London, with Jason Bonham again filling in on drums.

LED ZEPPELIN

On this day (Dec. 26) in 1968, Led Zeppelin (not to be confused with “ Len Zefflin “) kicked off their first North American tour opening for psychedelic hard rock band Vanilla Fudge at Denver Auditorium in Colorado. A ticket to see them play would only set you back $5 and the setlist included a surprising eight covers and only a few original tracks off the band’s forthcoming self-titled debut album, which peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1969.

Robert Plant

Legendary promoter Barry Fey recalled the band’s first U.S. show in his autobiography, Backstage Past : “The night of the concert, I get on stage to make the announcement to open the show. “Ladies and gentleman, please welcome, direct from England for their North America debut, Led Zeppelin!” There was a smattering of polite applause. Then, Robert Plant let it rip and everybody in the audience was stunned. You didn’t have to be a genius to know Zeppelin was going to be a smash. Oh, my God. People were going crazy!”

Here’s where the collection of songs on the band’s U.S. tour setlist originated:

Trending on Billboard

1. “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” (cover)

“Don’t you hear it callin’ me the way it used to do?”

Before becoming the infamous rock track on Zeppelin’s debut album, “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” began as a folk song written by Anne Bredon in the ’50s. It was recorded by Joan Baez on her 1962 album, Joan Baez in Concert, Part 1 .

2. “I Can’t Quit You Baby” (cover)

“I can’t quit you, baby, so I’m gonna put you down for a while”

“I Can’t Quit You Baby” was written by the immensely influential Willie Dixon and first recorded by Chicago artist  Otis Rush  in 1956. Listen to Rush sing the blues and then follow with Zeppelin’s bluesy-rock version. Regardless of which version you prefer, there’s no denying that both Rush and Plant deliver the vocals.

3.  “Dazed and Confused” (cover)

“Been dazed and confused for so long it’s not true”

“Dazed and Confused” was written and performed by  Jake Holmes in 1967, two years before appearing on Zeppelin’s debut album. It was also covered by Jimmy Page’s previous band, The Yardbirds , who Holmes opened for. Listen to Holmes’ psychedelic version and follow with the rendition that’s been known to melt a few faces.

4. “You Shook Me” (cover)

“You shook me so hard, baby, you shook me all night long.”

“ You Shook Me ” began as a blues song recorded by Chicago blues artist  Muddy Waters in 1962, co-written by Willie Dixon. It was then recorded by the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart on vocals in 1968, before being recorded for Zeppelin’s debut album in 1969. Zeppelin’s harmonica-turned-guitar solo (at 3:05) is in part responsible for the phrase “getting the Led out.”

5. “ Train Kept A-Rollin'”  (cover)

“I said, train kept a-rollin’ all night long”

First recorded by American jazz and R&B musician Tiny Bradshaw in 1951, “Train Kept A-Rollin'” was yet another song popularized by The Yardbirds (and Jeff Beck) before it was added to Zeppelin’s setlist. It was also previously covered by American rockabilly musician Johnny Burnette in 1956. Interestingly enough, Led Zeppelin’s version left the smallest digital footprint of all — perhaps because it wasn’t until 1974 that Aerosmith , not Zeppelin, brought the song into the hard rock mainstream.

6. “As Long As I Have You” (cover)

“Give me mountains to crumble and I’ll turn them to sand”

An extended version of Garnet Mimms ‘ 1964 song “As Long As I Have You” was performed during both Zeppelin’s U.S. and U.K. tours. Although Mimms version is notably underrated, Zeppelin took the song to another level entirely at the Fillmore West in San Francisco during the band’s second U.S. tour in 1969.

7. “For Your Love” (cover)

“I’d give the moon if it were mine to give.”

To continue the trend of songs performed live by Led Zeppelin post The Yardbirds, here’s “For Your Love,” originally written by Graham Gouldman (later of 10cc) in 1965. Although The Yardbird’s version became their highest charting single in the U.S. (peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 ), Zeppelin delivered the goods during the band’s performance at Hollywood’s world famous Whisky a Go Go in 1969.

8.  “Killing Floor” (cover)

“I should’ve quit you, babe, long time ago”

Prior to making its way onto Zeppelin’s setlist, “Killing Floor” was written by American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist  Howlin’ Wolf in 1964 and performed live by  Jimi Hendrix .

Eventually the song title (as well as the tempo and some of the lyrics) was changed to “The Lemon Song” (included on Led Zeppelin II ) after legal action was taken by Howlin’ Wolf’s publisher.

9. “How Many More Times”

“I can’t get through to her ’cause it doesn’t permit, but I’m gonna give her everything I’ve got to give”

“How Many More Times” was often Zeppelin’s closing number. At 8:29 minutes in length, it’s the longest song on the band’s debut album.

10. “Communication Breakdown”

“I’m having a nervous breakdown, drive me insane”

Usually a tour opener or an encore song, this classic track is one of the few songs on which Page sang a backing vocal.

11. “Moby Dick” (aka “Pat’s Delight”)

During their first U.S. tour, Zeppelin drummer John Bonham would sometimes solo for upwards of 30 minutes on this instrumental. The original song title was named for Bonham’s wife.

12.  “White Summer/Black Mountain Side”

Another instrumental, but this time Page took the spotlight. During the band’s first U.S. tour, “Black Mountain Side” was combined with The Yardbirds song “White Summer,” which translated into an epic 9-minute solo for Page. Listen to both songs together during Zeppelin’s 1969 show in Paris.

Led Zeppelin North American Tour 1968–1969

led zeppelin tours 1968

The 1968–1969 tour of North America was a concert tour of the United States of America and Canada by the England|English rock music|rock rock band|band, Led Zeppelin. The tour commenced on 26 December 1968 and completed on 15 February 1969, although there exists unconfirmed reports the band appeared in additional shows during this time.

The opportunity for this tour occurred with the late cancellation of concert dates by the Jeff Beck Group, managed by Peter Grant at RAK, who wanted to return home to England for Christmas. [1] Grant had developed a previous good working relationship with Premier Talent and Concert Wests, the promoters, and convinced them to book Led Zeppelin on the reputation of Jimmy Page and his former band the Yardbirds. [2]

To assist in promoting the band in North America prior to the tour, Grant consigned advanced copies of white label excerpts of Led Zeppelin (album)|Led Zeppelin to FM radio stations in each city the band performed. Grant would often visit these stations ahead of Led Zeppelin's gig to check they were receiving airplay. [3] The album was finally released on 17 January. Page recalled the effect of this in the New Musical Express :

Led Zeppelin opened for a number of established bands such as fellow label mates Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly, often receiving more rapturous acclaim by the audience that by the time the band came to perform on 31 January 1969 at the Fillmore East in New York (disambiguation)|New York, Iron Butterfly's management wanted to distance themselves. As Grant recalls:

By the time the tour concluded on 15 February, it was also clear to reviewers that the band had out-distanced their rivals. It was during this tour that Led Zeppelin's drummer, John Bonham, developed a close professional friendship with the drummer of Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice. [6]

The average fee charged by Led Zeppelin for a concert during this tour was around US$1500. It has been stated that for one show they performed for a mere US$320. [7] Figures like these would soon be dwarfed by the six figure sums routinely requested, and received, by Led Zeppelin on subsequent tours as their popularity skyrocketed. Grant recalled that 'The Yardbirds had been getting US$2500 a night but people like Bill Graham (promoter)|Bill Graham had faith in us and so did the kids who saw it.' [8]

Concert set list

Songs typically played on this tour included many blues and Yardbirds standards such as 'Train Kept A-Rollin , 'Smokestack Lightning', 'I Can't Quit You Baby', 'You Shook Me', 'White Summer', and 'For Your Love'. The concerts included soon to be released tracks from their debut album, including 'Dazed and Confused (Led Zeppelin song)|Dazed and Confused', 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (Led Zeppelin song)|Babe I'm Gonna Leave You', 'How Many More Times', and 'Communication Breakdown'. Other songs thrown in as extended medleys included Elmer Gantry's 'Flames' and Garnett Mimm's 'As Long As I Have You'. [9]

A typical set list for the tour was:

  • 'Train Kept A-Rollin (Tiny Bradshaw, Howie Kay, Lois Mann)
  • 'For Your Love' (Graham Gouldman)
  • 'I Can't Quit You Baby' (Willie Dixon)
  • 'As Long As I Have You' (Garnet Mimms)
  • 'Dazed and Confused (Led Zeppelin song)|Dazed and Confused' (Jimmy Page)

Denver, 1968: Led Zeppelin Makes American Debut

Denver’s Auditorium Arena

Think Denver doesn’t have much rock n’ roll history?

Nearly forty-five years ago, on December 26, 1968, legendary British rock band Led Zeppelin opened for Vanilla Fudge at Denver’s Auditorium Arena.

Believe it or not, Denver was Led Zeppelin’s first stop on their first North American tour.

As the late Denver concert promoter Barry Fey (1938-2013) recalled in his 2011 autobiography , he nearly passed on Led Zeppelin. When Ron Terry (agent for Vanilla Fudge) approached Fey about adding Led Zeppelin as an opener to the already sold-out Vanilla Fudge show, Fey refused. It wasn’t until Vanilla Fudge offered $750 of their own money to pay for half of Led Zeppelin’s performance fee that Fey reconsidered.

Rocky Mountain News music critic Thomas MacCluskey reviewed the December 26 show and recounted the way Led Zeppelin played their set with a series of emphatic adverbs: “powerfully, gutsily, unifiedly, inventively, and swingingly.”

MacCluskey went on to describe the performance of each band member. While he was impressed by guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones, MacCluskey had fewer kind words for singer Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham:

  • Robert Plant: “a cut above average in style, but no special appeal in sound”
  • Jimmy Page: “exceptionally fine…used a violin bow on the guitar strings in a couple of tunes…”
  • John Paul Jones: “solid, involved, contributing”
  • John Bonham: “a very effective group drummer, but uninventive, unsubtle, and unclimactic in an uneventful solo"

Led Zeppelin returned to Denver less than two years later on March 25, 1970, and played to a crowd of 11,500 at the Coliseum. MacCluskey’s review of the band’s performance was more positive this time around, with the critic noting a marked improvement of Plant’s vocals and Bonham’s drumming.

Looking for more Denver rock n’ roll history? A great place to start is the Western History Subject Index —a large, digitized index of newspaper articles relating to the history of Denver, Colorado, and the American West. While this index provides newspaper article citations (meaning you won't be taken directly to the article of your choosing), full-text articles are available in several DPL newspaper databases or on microfilm in DPL’s Western History and Genealogy Department .

Get ready for a Heart attack.

Ann and Nancy Wilson’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group just added a second leg to their 2024 ‘Royal Flush Tour’ from September through December with special guests Cheap Trick, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin on select dates.

Midway through the fall and winter run, the “Crazy On You” rockers will stop into New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Monday, Oct. 21.

On the first leg of the ‘Royal Flush Tour,’ Heart is scheduled to deal the hits at Atlantic City’s Hard Rock Live on Friday, May 24, Albany’s MVP Arena on Saturday, Aug. 10 and Buffalo’s KeyBank Center on Sunday, Aug. 11.

“I am incredibly proud of the show that our band has crafted and am looking forward to reconnecting with our fans,” Nancy Wilson shared.

“We can’t wait to share our music with everyone and celebrate the timeless legacy of our classic hits.”

And if you want to celebrate “Barracuda,” “Magic Man,” “Bebe Le Strange” and “Dreamboat Annie” with the Wilson sisters, you can grab tickets for all of their 2024 concerts as soon as today.

Even though inventory isn’t available for the newly announced concerts on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 5, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can  purchase on sites like Vivid Seats  before tickets are officially on sale.

As for the 70-year-old Nancy, she released “You And Me” in 2021.  Click here  to give it a listen.

For three years, the sisters were estranged after Ann’s husband, Dean Wetter, assaulted Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons in 2016 which led to his arrest.

After three years, they reunited for the 2019 Love Rocks Concert in New York City.

You can read more about the siblings’ relationship  here .
