Stephen Dodd won the John Jacobs Trophy for the first time after topping the Legends Tour Order of Merit at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

The three-time European Tour winner secured The Senior Open presented by Rolex in July after making birdie on the 72 nd  hole at Sunningdale Golf Club.

The Welshman was tied with Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez with one hole remaining but played a sublime approach shot to ten feet before rolling in the birdie putt for a two under par round of 68 to reach 13 under par and finish one stroke clear of the Spaniard.

After the MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions Dodd remained in top spot on 1830 points ahead of Thomas Levet of France in second on 1435 points and Austria’s Markus Brier on 1379 in third position.

“It feels great,” he said. “When I turned 50 five or six years ago it was a goal of mine to win the Order of Merit, so it was nice to have achieved that.

“I was pleasantly surprised having not played much golf with Covid, I played very little running up to Sunningdale for 18 months and I was probably just as surprised as the next person that I had achieved what I did, but clearly excited at the same time.

“I went into the week with no expectations, I hadn’t played, I played a little bit back at home but competitively I hadn’t played so I had no expectations going in so of course it was a just week where I had no pressure on me, I felt that anyway and I had nothing to lose and I just wanted to go out and do the best I could and fortunately for me it all came good.

“I just remember that I had a chance to win, and I just wanted to give myself the best opportunity I think because you never know as players when these things come along, if it ever does come along and I just tried to grasp it and that’s what I did.”

Dodd also recorded two top ten finishes at the Farmfoods European Senior Masters hosted by Peter Baker and also at the Senior Italian Open in November and the 55 year-old will be looking to replicate his success moving into the action-packed 2022 season.

The 2022 Legends Tour season begins next month for the Riegler & Partner Legends at Golf Club Murhof, in Frohnleiten, Austria from May 6 – 8.

Legends Tour 2022 stats prove SkyCaddie GPS is for winners

legends golf tour 2022 order of merit

The majority of competitors on the 2022 Legends Tour used SkyCaddie GPS distance measuring devices (DMDs) for their yardages, as shown in figures released today.

The overwhelming message from the 2022 Tour is that winners use a SkyCaddie.

On average, SkyCaddie GPS users made up over two-thirds of the field in 2022 Legends Tour events where DMDs were permitted, scoring 8 wins and 14 runner-up spots.

In these events SkyCaddie users scored 64% of all Top Ten and ties finishes, and occupied 13 of the Top 20 places in the final 2022 Legends Tour Order of Merit – with South African golfer and SkyCaddie GPS user James Kingston securing the John Jacobs Trophy for winning last year’s overall OOM.

In the season’s final event, the MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius in December, SkyCaddie GPS users took 8 of the Top 10 and ties spots.

Three-time European Tour winner Joakim Haeggmann, who won last month’s MCB Tour Championship – Seychelles, said: “I use SkyCaddie every day in every tournament, for tee shots, carries, layups, bunkers, greens and planning the hole ahead.”

Major-winners Darren Clarke, Ian Woosnam, Michael Campbell, Paul Lawrie and John Daly all used SkyCaddie GPS during the 2022 season, as did former Ryder Cup stars Peter Baker, Niclas Fasth, David Gilford, Joakim Haeggmann, Mark James, Philip Price, Steven Richardson, Jarmo Sandelin, Jean Van De Velde and the late Barry Lane.

A SkyCaddie reveals many aspects of a golf hole which are invisible to laser users, who only have line of sight. Legends Tour organisers use SkyCaddie’s ground-mapped GPS yardages to create pin sheets when setting each day’s pins, enabling competitors to download the day’s hole positions onto their SkyCaddies.

SkyCaddie’s James Holmes said: “SkyCaddie GPS is well and truly established now on the Legends Tour. Between them our users have won over 500 Tour events in their careers, so they know how to win, and what equipment helps them to lift the trophy.

“These statistics prove beyond doubt that SkyCaddie GPS helps elite golfers to shoot lower scores.”

The Legends Tour, formerly known as the European Senior Tour and the Staysure Tour, is the most prestigious golf tour in the world to allow the use of DMDs (Distance Measuring Devices) during competitive play. The Tour is open to male competitors aged 50 and over, and is run by the PGA European Tour.

Peter Baker Wins MCB Tour Championship And Legends Tour Order Of Merit Title

Baker carded three consecutive rounds of 67 to claim the title by a single stroke in Mauritius

Peter Baker holds the MCB Tour Championship trophy

On a thrilling final day in Mauritius, it was Peter Baker who came out on top, as the Englishman carded a third consecutive round of 67 to not only pick up the MCB Tour Championship, but also the Legends Tour Order of Merit.

Beginning the final round, fans were treated to an extremely tight leaderboard, with 10 players within three shots of the leaders Michael Jonzon and Robert Coles. Amongst those 10 was Baker himself, as well as his nearest challenger in the Order of Merit standings, Adilson da Silva.

A post shared by Golf Monthly (@golfmonthly) A photo posted by on

We were in for a great day of golf on Sunday but, thanks to Mother Nature, we saw a 50-minute delay before the players made their way out to the course. That delay didn't seem to affect them though, as Baker birdied two of his first four holes to jump into an early lead.

Throughout the day though, we would see the leaderboard change numerous times and, as the front nine drew to a close, a three-way tie for the lead was taking place, with Patrick Sjoland, Baker and Da Silva battling it out for the top spot.

It really was becoming too close to call, with Sjoland taking the lead from Da Silva by just a single stroke with a handful of holes left to play. Leading by one shot with two holes to go, it seemed that the title was heading the Swede's way; that was until Baker hit the afterburners and carded a devastating finish to leap frog his fellow pro.

An unbelievable finish to an incredible season!See how the final moments unfolded for Peter Baker on 18 ⛳#MCBTourChamp #MCBRoadToMauritius@constancehotels @mcb.group pic.twitter.com/sHsOgMRjh0 December 10, 2023

On the charge, Baker carded three straight birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th to pull level and, after finding the fairway at the 18th, he hit a stunning approach shot into the green with a fairway wood!

Faced with around six-feet for eagle, he just missed the attempt, but the two-putt birdie meant he jumped Sjoland, who was at -14, to pick up his fourth Legends Tour title in 2023 and finish just 700 points clear of Da Silva in the Order of Merit standings.

Peter Baker tops Legends Tour Order of Merit after winning MCB Tour Championship

9.07am 13th December 2023 - Sponsorship & Events

MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius – Day Three

Peter Baker, the former Ryder Cup star and four-time DP World Tour winner, won his fourth Legends Tour event of the year on Sunday to capture the 2023 Tour’s Order of Merit title and lift the prestigious John Jacobs Trophy.

Baker, who is a member of Galvin Green’s Team 30 , and was wearing the Swedish apparel brand’s white MAX Tour shirt in the humid conditions in Mauritius last weekend, birdied four of the last six holes to win the MCB Tour Championship at the Constance Belle Mare Plage course with three consecutive rounds of 67.

A sublime 5-wood second shot set up a birdie on the last to clinch the Tour double, as the Staffordshire professional became the no.1 player on the Legends Tour this year.

As well as taking the MCB Road to Mauritius title, Baker had previously won the JCB Championship at the JCB Golf & Country Club; the Irish Legends event at Seapoint Golf Links, Co. Louth; and the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship at the Trump International course in Aberdeen.

Peter played for Europe in the 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry, scoring two fourball victories paired with Ian Woosnam and a singles triumph over Corey Pavin.

Speaking after finishing on top of the Legends Tour money list for the first time, Baker said: “It’s been an incredible golfing year for me and I thought I would have to win this event to take the trophy. I played the back nine really well and the last six holes were tremendous. I can’t quite believe it, but I guess I managed to hit some great shot at the time this year.”

The Galvin Green Team 30 designation was awarded in 2020 to mark the 30-year anniversary of the apparel company, when a select group of PGA professionals who had been associated with the brand from its early days were given license to wear the special shirts.

De Leo crowned Alps Tour Number One in style

Gregorio De Leo secured three victories on the Alps Tour in 2022 on his way to winning the Order of Merit and earning graduation to the European Challenge Tour.

Gregorio De Leo

The Italian triumphed at the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni in May, before back-to-back victories at the Alps de Las Castillas and Roma Alps Open followed in July. The 22-year-old finished sixth at the Emilia Romagna Grand Final, the Alps Tour season finale, to cement his position at the top of the Rankings.

De Leo will be joined on the Challenge Tour in 2023 by fellow Alps Tour graduates Julien Sale and Tom Vaillant of France, Italian Stefano Mazzoli and Dutchman Vince Van Veen.

Sale impressed with four runner up finishes on his way to finishing second on the Order of Merit, while Vaillant won back-to-back events in June to finish third on the Rankings. Mazzoli triumphed at the season opening Ein Bay Open before finishing second at the Emilia Romagna Grand Final to claim the fourth Challenge Tour card.

Irishman Gary Hurley would have graduated in fifth place, however he was able to secure DP World Tour playing privileges after a brilliant performance at DP World Tour Qualifying School in November where he finished 15th.

The Legends Tour 2024 starts from Barbados

T he 2024 season of the Legends Tour, the European circuit reserved for players over 50, kicks off from the Barbados Islands with the Barbados Legends hosted by Ian Woosnam, taking place over 54 holes from May 3rd to 5th. Emanuele Canonica will be competing on the course at Apes Hill resort in Saint James.

Legends Tour, schedule

Currently, there are 17 events scheduled, with the last one being held on the island of Mauritius (MCB Tour Championship, December 6th-8th), although the number of events may increase as the season progresses.

In the field, we have Ian Woosnam, the Welsh champion and promoter of the event, along with the top three finishers in last year's money list: Englishman Peter Baker, Brazilian Adilson Da Silva, and South African James Kingston.

Joining them are Argentine Angel Cabrera and New Zealander Michael Campbell, both Major winners like Woosnam, as well as Englishmen Phillip Archer and Philip Golding, Swedes Patrik Sjoland and Michael Jonzon, Spaniards Miguel Angel Martin and Santiago Luna, Welshman Phillip Price, Indian Jeev Milkha Singh, and Argentine José Coceres.

The European Senior Tour, currently known as the Legends Tour, is a professional golf tour catering to male golfers aged 50 and above, administered by the PGA European Tour. Originally named the Staysure Tour for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, following a sponsorship deal with the UK-based insurance company Staysure in December 2017, it was rebranded as the Legends Tour in 2020.

This change came after Ryan Howsam, founder and owner of Staysure, acquired majority ownership in a joint venture with the European Tour. The Tour's inception dates back to 1992, prompted by the advocacy of 60 leading professionals, five years after the inaugural Senior Open Championship in 1987.

Among the most prestigious events in Europe is the Senior British Open Championship, which is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour Champions and, notably, was contested on the Old Course at St Andrews for the first time in 2018.

Additionally, the European Tour collaborates in sanctioning the Senior PGA Championship and the U.S. Senior Open. While prize money from the latter does not contribute to the Order of Merit, the former has been recognized as an official money event since 2007.
