Day excursion

🤬So yesterday morning we were all set for a day trip to Liverpool. Three of us had pet sitters, and we were looking forward to having a lovely day out. M & D Travel took our booking and our money and left us standing at 7.30 on a frosty morning. No sign of our bus, no notification. I messaged their page and someone who worked there, but not on the excursions, told us the trip had been cancelled TEN days ago. They are now well aware that they owe us for our trip and guess what?? Not a word. If you want a lovely day out DO NOT use M & D Travel

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Popular on Variety

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

How to watch 'Conan O'Brien Must Go' in Ireland

Max ‘s Conan O’Brien Must Go is a travel show with a twist.

Conan O'Brien Must Go

Related stories, jean smart to receive the hollywood reporter's trailblazer award at the seattle international film festival, 'hacks' season 3 trailer finds jean smart and hannah einbinder right back where they started.

Conan O’Brien Must Go is a smartly dumb show — or a stupidly smart show — focused (loosely) on what is essential about travel. It’s a series about arriving in a new place open to meeting new people, learning new languages, tasting new foods and experiencing uncomfortable new circumstances … and then making fun of them, when all the while you’re mostly mocking yourself and the fears people have about stepping outside of their comfort zones.

Or maybe it’s just a show about Conan O’Brien making fun of travel shows. However expansive or limited your perspective, and however expansive or limited O’Brien’s perspective, Conan O’Brien Must Go is a very silly and occasionally illuminating series that’s still finding its rhythms and its comic voice as the fourth episode concludes. That leaves the show’s biggest takeaway as “Wait, that’s it? I want more.”

Although O’Brien has done travel-centric material in the past — I’d argue that the international jaunts were the pinnacle of his TBS show — Conan O’Brien Must Go is more an extension of his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan .

Conan O’Brien Must Go finds the host heading abroad to meet with and provide assistance to listeners/viewers/fans from around the world. That gives the impression of something more structured than what actually occurs.

The visits — deemed “surprise visits” in some cases — really set a tone more than anything else, something along the lines of “playfully combative” in a vein that will be familiar to podcast listeners. O’Brien likes busting chops and admires people who are prepared to fight back. One of the things that O’Brien is best at is never seeming to be punching down — which isn’t easy on a literal level, given that O’Brien towers over his guests, but it isn’t easy on any level since O’Brien will always be a generally famous, Harvard-educated TV personality and his new friends tend not to be. It takes astonishing calibration to go to a foreign country, find somebody for whom English may not be a first language, and keep the joke from ever being as facile as, “Ha, ha, I’m making fun of you and you don’t get it.” Sure, that might be a layer of the humor at times, but the host is careful to situate himself and his own discomfort as the real target of the joke.

When O’Brien wants to have somebody he can make fun of mercilessly, that’s where somebody like longtime collaborator Jordan Schlansky comes in. Schlansky plays a key part in the Argentina episode, taking on the much more traditional role as the travel host who did his research and knows bits of trivia about nearly everything, so O’Brien ribs him mercilessly for doing his homework. Even then, the joke tends to be that Schlansky is right and Conan just doesn’t care.

O’Brien is an appreciator of the genre, and Conan O’Brien Must Go is an appreciative tweaker of the genre, in some of the same ways the host used to treat the talk show format back when he was a Young Turk. The Norway episode is dominated by O’Brien and company’s enthusiastic over-reliance on drone shots, going so far as to have him running around carrying the drone in Oslo, where flying such crafts is apparently illegal. There are multiple occasions — the street food scene in Bangkok and a butcher’s shop in Dublin — where O’Brien makes sure to sample “extreme” foods, while acknowledging that that’s what travel hosts do. I’ve seen more travel hosts than I could count navigating the floating markets of Thailand, but I’ve never seen a host do it with a squeaking rubber chicken and an Angry Birds hat, clutching a carved dildo.

And then sometimes Conan just wants to be really goofy! He performs a song on a popular Thai variety show, attempts the tango and Muay Thai boxing, and goes on a quest for Bono in a public park in Dublin. He’s game for anything as long as he can look ridiculous. Not everything works, exactly, but you can always sense O’Brien and his writers restlessly scanning the horizon for the next fun thing to do along their journey.

Or maybe that’s just not something Conan O’Brien Must Go aspires to. In that same Hot Ones segment, O’Brien described his goal, again disingenuously, as making viewers dumber after each 40-minute episode than they were when they began. He’ll have to settle for “more entertained.” Bring on season two.

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

Eric Deggans

m d travel reviews

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

Is Conan O'Brien the best 'Hot Ones' guest ever? Discuss.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

A funhouse mirror version of a travel show

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway Conaco/Max hide caption

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.

(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .

Leaving late night TV as late night left him

I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .

O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.

Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.

Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.

Satechi 145W USB-C 4-Port GaN Travel Charger review: Plenty of power on the go

Petter Ahrnstedt

Expert's Rating

  • Good design
  • Several adapters
  • Four charging ports
  • Relatively heavy

Our Verdict

The Satechi 145 W USB-C Gan Travel Charger makes life easier when traveling. You can replace all your chargers with this one. It’s also just as perfect to keep at home on your desk. Plenty of wattage and ports (as well as different plugs) make it a great buy.

Best Prices Today: Satechi 145W USB-C GaN Travel Charger

The best thing about the USB-C standard is that not only does it reduce the amount of e-waste, but it also makes traveling easier–but you may still need multiple chargers when on the road. Your iPad requires one, your iPhone another, and your computer a third. While it’s possible to charge them individually with one charger, the problem is if you need to charge multiple gadgets at the same time.

Enter the Satechi 145W USB-C GaN Travel Charger. Satechi’s latest addition is a relatively compact charger with a charging capacity (as the name gently alludes) of 145 watts.

For those who don’t know what a GaN charger is, it’s technology where that uses Gallium Nitride, a semiconductor material that has excellent conductivity and resistance to high temperatures. That means that chargers can be more compact and also benefit in power conversion and energy output. When a regular charger gets hot, it is because the current “leaks” and is converted into heat. A GaN charger stays much cooler, even when you put a heavy load on it.

Satechi 145 W USB-C Gan Travel Charger i handen

It doesn’t take up much space.

 width=

Petter Ahrnstedt

The Travel Charger’s 145 watts are distributed across four different ports. If you only connect one device, the first two ports deliver 140 watts, while the last two deliver 45 watts. The ports that provide more power support PD 3.1 , while the other two support PD 3.0. If you connect four devices, the ports deliver 65, 30, 25, and 20 watts respectively. That’s quite enough to charge a MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch at the same time. You can easily use your computer or tablet while charging.

Adapters for the whole world

The Travel Charger is space gray, slightly rectangular, and has a small button on the top. This is so you can change the plug itself. Along with a small woven nylon bag, the package includes four different plugs:

  • 1x UK adapter
  • 1x EU adapter
  • 1x AU adapter (Australia)
  • 1x USA adapter

Satechi 145 W USB-C Gan Travel Charger med olika stickproppar

The device doesn’t have a USB-A connection. But at least since the iPhone 12, Apple has included a USB-C to Lightning cable and the iPhone 15 has USB-C.

Should you buy the Satechi 145W USB-C 4-Port GaN Travel Charger?

The Satechi 145 W USB-C Gan Travel Charger is a powerful charger that you can use at home as well as when traveling. The format is flexible and you get plugs that work in most corners of the world. If I’m going to complain about anything, it’s the weight, but then I’m a whiny journalist who needs to find something to complain about.

I Only Travel With a Carry-on, and This Is the 1 Product That Always Makes the Cut on My Packing List

It actually helps me pack even less.

m d travel reviews

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

I'm a beauty writer, of course I’m always trying out new products. In fact, I'm actually a beauty and travel writer, so, it's quite literally my job to review the latest in makeup , skincare, and hair care and jet-set across the globe. But, it's also, quite clearly, a passion. Another passion? Flying carry-on only . I’m a big stickler for not having a lot of baggage (literally) and flying through airports to get to my destination or home as fast as possible. And anybody who knows me knows that I'm not one to turn down a good beach vacation (I also, unsurprisingly, live 10 minutes from the beach as well).

Taking all of that into consideration, there’s one product that has consistently made the cut in spite of the little travel space that I have — and that’s the Elta MD Daily UV Tinted Sunscreen , a two-in-one SPF that I actually use in place of foundation when I’m on trips (thus freeing up space in my makeup bag). It’s lightly tinted but layerable, and creates a super pretty, smooth, and even tone that protects my face from the sun's damaging UVA and UVB rays with micronized zinc oxide. It's SPF 40, but there are also other tinted versions with varying levels of SPF protection (as well as a non-tinted version if that's more your vibe).

Elta MD Daily UV Tinted Sunscreen

It’s ideal for normal, dry, and combination skin (it goes on a bit dewy, which is why I wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend it to those with oily skin, but my friend who leans on the oilier side loves it as well — so do with that information what you will). It’s formulated with hyaluronic acid, which helps disguise (and plump up) the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid products are great generally for all skin types, but even more so for mature skin as the powerful ingredient helps skin stretch and flex while fortifying the skin barrier to lock in moisture (goodbye, dryness!).

This tinted sunscreen is also intensely hydrating on its own as well, and it’s non-comedogenic, which is a fancy way of saying that it won’t clog your pores. This combined with its lightweight but buildable formula means that you can wear it underneath actual foundation or powder should you want more coverage. But if you’re like me, it works just on its own. What's more, it’s dye-free, paraben-free, and dermatologically tested.

As I've mentioned before, this is my go-to SPF and complexion product when I'm on the beach or traveling to a tropical setting where you can really feel the sun. It simplifies my getting ready routine, ensuring that I don't waste any precious sunbathing time, and it's compact enough to carry in any tote bag or wristlet for easy reapplying access. In fact, I love that I only need this product on hand to protect my skin from the sun and make it look perfect; I can go from the beach to lunch and out for the night without any real makeup.

I’ve gotten many compliments on looking “glowy” when wearing it, and other reviewers note that it gives them a “nice healthy glow” as well. My favorite trick is mixing it with a liquid illuminator or highlighter like Saie’s glowy multipurpose illuminator for an even dewier and brighter finish (I just rub both products together in my hands and use my fingers to apply). That’s the other thing that I love about this “foundation” hack — you don’t need to pack makeup brushes; clean fingers work just fine. It’s truly a face- and space-saving product.

Beyond the beach, you can catch me wearing the EltaMD Tinted Sunscreen in cold-weather conditions (yes, you need sunscreen then too, especially if the sun is being reflected off of the snow), on a plane (hello, windows), and everywhere in between. And, when I'm home and don't feel like doing full glam, it comes in handy as an easy-to-apply, everyday foundation to get my skin where I want it with minimal effort.

Summer travel season is upon us, so don't let a bulky toiletry bag slow you down. Simplify your travel beauty routine with the Elta MD Daily UV Tinted Sunscreen . Scars are the body's way of healing certain wounds — a powerful reminder of our body's strengths, but it may not be cosmetically ideal. If you are looking to improve the appearance of a scar, th e best scar creams can help flatten, fade and lighten them.

Scars are a necessary and inevitable result of wounds, so it's up to personal preference if you choose to try topical creams and gels. We spoke with dermatologists to find the best creams, gels and topical treatments with ingredients for improving scars and protecting them from the sun.

Ingredients to look for:

  • Silicone: Silicone is considered the most effective treatment for scars: A large review from 2020 found that it is equally effective as a gel or in a sheet. “Silicone-based creams, gels and tapes have the most scientific evidence to back their effectiveness in softening, smoothing and minimizing the appearance of scars,” says Adele Haimovic, M.D., a New York- and New Jersey-based surgical and cosmetic dermatologist.
  • Green tea extract: A potent extract from green tea called EGCG has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can be effective at reducing skin scarring .
  • Onion extract: Known scientifically as Allium cepa, this extract has been shown to reduce inflammation and prevent an overproduction of collagen at the site of a wound.
  • Vitamin E: “Active ingredients, such as onion extract and vitamin E , are popular in over-the-counter formulations,” says Dr. Haimovic. However, research shows that directly applying vitamin E does not fade scars .
  • Allantoin: This chemical compound included in topical gels has been shown to improve certain types of scars , but more research is needed. It also soothes irritated skin, which can be a relief for newer, itchier scars.
  • Hyaluronic acid: Used in many anti-aging skincare products, this substance helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines . Hyaluronic acid can also potentially reduce scarring , especially those caused by keloid scars.
  • Vitamin C: This antioxidant can help fade scars and one study found that topical silicone gel containing vitamin C can improve the appearance of fine surgical scars .

When treating a scar, it’s always best to consult with a dermatologist first. If your scar is the result of surgery, consult with your doctor before trying over-the-counter products. They can offer advice and insight on how the scar will heal over time.

This powerful gel contains silicone, which is considered the most effective topical treatment for scars. "Silicone gel improves the barrier function of the skin's outer layer,” says Alpana Mohta, M.D., a dermatologist in Bikaner, India. “It creates a semi-occlusive environment over the scar, preventing excessive water loss and maintaining hydration.”

Hydrating the skin is found to be important for healing wounds because it prevents scabs (which can make scarring worse ), so keeping newer scars hydrated can help. Thousands of reviewers confirm that this gel absorbs to their skin easily, helps flatten their scars flatter and make them less prominent. It doesn't happen overnight, though: To achieve results, you should use this treatment for three months, as recommended.

Fans of this popular product — which lists silicone as its main ingredient — love how easy it is to use the rollerball function instead of having to apply it with their fingertips . The silicone works to hydrate the skin, reduce redness in the scar and flatten the texture of scars. Users love that it's not messy, does not irritate sensitive skin and is effective.

Its shiny appearance makes it less ideal for using in prominent areas such as the face. A great option for less prominent parts of the body, or if you simply like the convenience of rolling on your scar treatment as easily as a lip gloss.

If you think getting a tan will help your scars blend in better, think again. “Prolonged sun exposure without proper sun protection can hinder the healing process and make scars more noticeable,” says Dr. Mitchell. “It's crucial to protect scars from harmful UV rays using sunscreen or physical barriers like clothing.”

This Mederma Scar Cream contains an SPF 30 for protection against the sun (although it's not water-resistant — if you’re swimming or sweating, you’ll need to use a sunscreen that’s designed for getting wet). Be sure to always use sunscreen all over to protect the rest of your body, too!

There’s a reason Mederma has become a go-to brand for scar creams and gels. “This over-the-counter gel contains key ingredients like allium cepa [onion] extract and hyaluronic acid, which have been shown to improve the appearance of scars over time,” says dermatologist Mitchel Goldman, M.D. , founder of Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego.

The gel’s ingredient list covers a lot of bases, including allantoin — which soothes irritated skin, a plus if your scar gets itchy or tende r — as well as moisturizer and a provitamin to lock in that much-needed hydration. Use for at least two weeks, as recommended.

Adhesive sheets are another way to apply effective ingredients to scars. Dr. Mohta recommends Cica-Care Silicone Gel Adhesive Sheets as a way to reduce the enlargement, or overgrowth of scars (also called hypertrophy). “Silicone gel sheets applied to immature hypertrophic scars have significantly reduced scar stiffness, erythema and overall severity,” she says. Reviewers say they are a good buy compared with other scar sheets.

There are a few products that, while not officially marketed as scar creams, have proven to be effective treatments. Bio-Oil Skincare Oil has become a dermatologist favorite and is “known for its effectiveness in reducing the appearance of scars,” says Dr. Mitchell, adding, “It contains a blend of natural oils and vitamins that can enhance skin hydration and promote scar healing.”

Dr. Mohta warns, however, that its efficacy “is still debated among researchers [and] some studies suggest that vitamin E may not be effective and can even cause contact dermatitis in some individuals.”

If you’ve ever had a keloid scar — a raised or bumpy scar that keeps growing — you know that they can be resistant to healing. "Keloids are more challenging to treat,” says Dr. Mohta. But customers rave about this gel, which focuses on flattening keloid scars and reducing redness.

Although it can take time to work, its self-drying formula means that makeup can be applied over the scar to minimize its appearance while the gel (hopefully) works its magic. Plus, it's fragrance-free and the silicone provides hydration so that you can safely apply it to facial scars.

Earth Mama Organic Skin & Scar Balm

Reviewers love this organic, climate pledge-friendly balm, which includes ingredients such a tamanu oil, sea buckthorn seed oil and calendula and note that it’s particularly great for helping prevent stretch marks by adding extra moisture.

The balm formula makes this option easier to rub into large scars on the body, compared to gels and creams in small tubes. It’s also more effective than using ointments like Vaseline or Aquaphor, says Dr. Rogers.

This gel comes with a high price tag but also packs a silicone-heavy punch; that prized ingredient makes up 95% of the formula with some other goodies — like fatty acids and allantoin for soothing irritated skin or itchy scars — added in for hydration as well as ensuring the gel’s smooth application.

Users like the skin-strengthening effects of this product to use before in-office procedures, such as microneedling or Botox to help treat acne scars.

How we chose the best scar creams

linebreak

When researching and evaluating skincare products, our skincare experts consider factors like ingredients, effectiveness, texture and cost. When choosing the best scar creams, we sought the advice of multiple dermatologists to gain more insight on effective ingredients and gather their recommendations.

We also read through hundreds of online reviews to gain a better understanding of the user experience. Overall, we made sure to highlight topical treatments that have the best potential to fade, smooth and lighten scars.

What to look for in a scar cream

abjksdabs

With a variety of options available, choosing the best scar cream for yourself can come down to personal preferences, the type of your scar and the location of your scar.

✔️ Consider certain ingredients: The most effective ingredient in topical treatments for scars is considered to be silicone. Studies and dermatologists also suggest green tea extract, onion extract, vitamins E and C, allantoin and hyaluronic acid for scar creams and gels.

✔️ Choose a trusted brand: Products that are backed by dermatologists and have significant scientific evidence behind their ingredients are more likely to produce results and less likely to react badly with your skin.

✔️ Type: Whether you pick a cream, sheet, gel or oil is entirely up to personal preference, but the location of a scar on the body may make one type better than the other. For example, an oil or cream with a noticeable residue may not be ideal for a scar on your face.

✔️ Look for SPF: Scar creams with SPF included can prevent a scar from becoming more noticeable because sun damage can make the scar tissue darker than the surrounding skin .

What are the different types of scars?

linebreak

Understanding the type of scar you have can help you chose the correct treatment. Different types of injuries, wounds and blemishes result in different types of scars. These include:

✔️ Fine-line scars: The result of a cut or minor incision, these scars can be pink or red lines that take up to two years to fade. The scars may fade into a white or light pink line on lighter skin tones or a brown or white mark on darker skin tones .

✔️ Keloids: A keloid scar happens when too much collagen is produced at the site of the wound, growing even after the wound has healed. This results in a raised scar that can be pink, red or purple . These scars have extra connective tissue that grows past the original injury or wound site, looking irregular with a hard texture . Our bodies produce cells (melaconytes) after an injury that increase the pigment in the area, and keloids are more common in Black and Latin Americans in the U.S. , since keloids are more likely to occur in areas with more melanocytes. “A keloid may require additional corticosteroid injections or laser therapy,” says Dr. Mohta.

✔️ Hypertrophic scars: Like keloids, these are the result of excess collagen at the site of the scar. They do not grow bigger than the scar, but can grow thicker for up to 6 months before improving over time, and may also require further treatment if scar creams don't do the job. Hypertrophic scars stay within the wound area and can be the result of a surgical incision .

✔️ Atrophic scars: These small, sunken, pitted scars are typically the result of cystic acne, which causes damage to the collagen, tissues or fat underneath the skin — hence the name atrophic. There are various types within this category, such as icepick, boxcar and rolling scars, with studies showing that various in-office procedures can effectively treat and improve the skin texture.

Should I use a gel, cream or sheet?

linebreak

There are many different types of scar treatment available, but the most important criteria is personal preference. Dr. Rogers advises people to choose whatever they will use for "at least 90 days after the scarring event.” If it’s easier for you to apply gel with a roll-on applicator — and you know you’re more likely to stick with it — go with that option. “Skipping applications or discontinuing use prematurely may diminish their efficacy,” notes Dr. Goldman.

Other factors to consider include the site of your scar: A sheet may not be convenient for a part of your body that’s constantly in motion, such as the knee, and if the scar is on your face, you may want to go with a treatment that doesn’t leave a visible residue. One study found that there was no difference in results between silicone gels and sheets, but the best results occurred when they were used together (team work makes the dream work! ).

What else can I do to minimize the appearance of my scar?

linebreak

Allowing your wound to heal properly before attempting to address the scar tissue is important, as is protecting the scar itself, which can get itchy, red or swollen. This means no scratching mosquito bites, no picking at acne and leaving scabs alone. “If a scar becomes infected, it can delay the healing process and may require medical intervention,” warns Dr. Goldman. “It's essential to keep the scar clean and follow any post-wound care instructions provided by your healthcare professional.”

Protecting your skin from the sun is important with or without scars, but sun damage can worsen a scar — especially new ones. Applying sunscreen can also reduce red or brown discoloration and help a scar fade faster, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) . Be sure to use a treatment with a built-in SPF and apply sunscreen if your scar is in an exposed area, especially if you will be outside and under the sun.

If the best scar creams, gels, oils and sheets are not working, you can talk to a dermatologist about in-office treatments. Acne scars can be treated quicker and more effectively with procedures like chemical peels, skin needling, lasers and Botox injections.

Can I still treat an old scar?

linebreak

“Fresher scars tend to respond better to treatment compared to older scars, as they are still in the active phase of healing,” says Dr. Goldman. However, even with old scars, it’s still a good idea to practice sun safety and try regular application of a scar treatment.

Dr. Mohta recommends silicone gel sheets for older scars: “It’s my most prescribed topical agent for any scar, whether fresh or old,” she says. If topical treatments are not cutting it, board-certified dermatologists can provide laser treatments to remove an old scar , according to the AAD.
