Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa distinguishes itself from other safari lodges by its style and quality of food. Everything is home-made and where possible, home-grown in our own greenhouse. All dishes are beautifully plated by our dedicated and experienced chefs who work with a daily-changing menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even the snacks for the game drives are homemade.

The temperature controlled wine cellar is stocked with a wide selection of Premium South African wines from all the different wine regions of South Africa, as well as French Champagne. They have a temperature-controlled wine cellar in the Main Lodge where they can offer special wine tastings upon request, at an additional cost.

The rich and varied Waterberg region offers a diverse variety of unspoiled habitats. More than 50 mammals, 300 bird species and 2,000 plant species can be found within these habitats.

The savannah areas of the Waterberg consist of rolling grasslands and a semi-deciduous forest. The mammal population in Welgevonden Game Reserve, situated within the Waterberg region, boasts all of Africa’s renowned Big 5, as well as cheetah, giraffe, crocodile, hippo, brown hyena, honey badger and a whole lot more. Welgevonden Game Reserve also contains the world’s biggest concentration of the highly endangered white rhino on private land. The Reserve’s renowned anti-poaching unit has ensured that not one of these gargantuan grazers have ever been lost to poaching – which is an incredible feat on a continent where the practice is endemic.

The wildlife and wilderness habitats make Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa perfect for safari game drives.

Their private rangers are professional and knowledgeable and can tell you everything about the flora and fauna of the African bush. Their love of the wilderness is contagious and their anecdotes are plentiful, informative and thoroughly riveting.Game drives take place in the early morning, before breakfast, or in the late afternoon after tea. During the morning game drives your ranger will choose a pleasant spot for a refreshing cup of coffee or tea and pre-breakfast nibbles. On the afternoon or evening game drives, you can toast the magical bush sunsets with a sundowner accompanied by snacks.

You might find yourself magically atop a mountain ridge, amazed at the majestic beauty of the African landscape, while holding a glass of South African wine or a gin & tonic in one hand, and a typical African snack, like biltong (a local version of beef jerky), in the other.

Their rangers will take you on adventures in their 4×4 game viewing vehicles, giving you the perfect opportunity to spot the Big 5 – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino – or at other times, to track the Little 5 – elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, rhinoceros beetle, buffalo weaver and ant lion. You may also encounter giraffes, kudu, warthog or large herds of zebra and antelope along the way, to name just a few of the many species found around the lodge.

So far, great service
This review is for the booking only as we have not taken our trip yet. Safari expert Sara Van Coille has been great to work with. We booked later than we planned and she was able to come up with an itinerary that was perfect for our group. Sara has responded to all our questions and was very quick to get back to me. From our experience so far, we would definitely recommend Safari.com

Leigh-Ann was amazing.
Leigh-Ann was amazing. She worked incredibly hard to provide us with our complex safari in Botswana and our travel and accommodation in South Africa. Leigh-Ann was always very helpful and encouraging which must have been very difficult for her as we were within a very tight time schedule to arrange our holiday. She was very thoughtful and even included a list of the things we would need to take. I am so happy with the final outcome and I am very thankful to Leigh-Ann and the other Safari.com team members who worked so hard to make our dream safari a reality.

About Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa

Game Lodge, situated in the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve in the Waterberg, is both luxurious and child friendly. Private and exclusive (the lodge has recently been renovated), it's the perfect wilderness retreat for families and small groups wanting to explore the bushveld on guided game drives to see the abundant wildlife. And you can expect great sightings at this 34,000-plus-hectare Big Five Reserve. A major attraction, also newly constructed, is the underground waterhole hide in front of the lodge, which allows guests to get close to the animals as they drink.

From $ 470 person/night

Waterberg, South Africa

mhondoro 010

Swimming in the pool while watching wildlife at a waterhole is an extraordinary experience.

Watching the wildlife drinking from the underground waterhole hide, reached from the lodge via a tunnel.

Reclining in the specially designed seats on the star deck to gaze at the giant dome of the night sky.

The property

The main lodge lies at Mhondoro's heart. Extensively rebuilt in 2015, the design and decor combine modern sophistication with homely comforts. The meals are five-star, with a full breakfast, afternoon tea and three-course dinners served with excellent wines (try the locally produced vintages – they're very good). Outdoors, expansive wooden decks overlook the waterhole, the bushveld and its inhabitants. There's a heated pool overlooking the waterhole, a star-gazing deck, a gym, massage suite and sauna, and that incredible hide.

Facing either the waterhole or the dramatic Waterberg mountains, five suites and a villa sleep a total of just 10 people. The suites may differ in size and situation, but all are beautifully decorated in chic African sophistication, with en-suite bathrooms and private viewing decks. On honeymoon? The Honeymoon Suite is perfect for romantic getaways. For exclusive use, including your own butler, chef and staff, the Presidential Villa is astonishing, and even has its own Jacuzzi.

One more thing...

What is unique about Mhondoro is the tunnel under the main lodge that brings you to a hide where you find yourself at eye level with the waterhole and up close with the animals. And the food ... don't let me start about the food.

Explore the bushveld on morning and evening game drives, or on a guided walk. Your chances of seeing the Big Five and other wildlife and bird species, including rare blue crane, are high. Back at the lodge, swim in the pool, relax at the spa or work out at the gym. There's a dedicated open-air play area and playroom for children. Mhondoro also has a custom-built stargazing deck equipped with a high-powered telescope and seating designed specifically for comfortable star-spotting.
