By far the best show I have ever attended. Every member of the band is so inviting and humble that they really create a beautiful evening. I’m looking forward to seeing them again in a few days in my home town!

If you are a fan, or just love reggae ....seeing him live is absolutely recommended. I personally love reggae to rock , folk and hip hop - genres .....and somehow Mike Love blends all these easily to his diverse music portfolio. He masters the foot pedal tool to “lay down back ground” chorus or beats —-and then “live” he inserts additional lyrics.

But the clear characteristic that differs from others is his lyrics and positive energy.

We saw him live March 30-2018 at the Island cafe in Maui.and it was amazing. We were fortunate to see him in a small venue that had great vibes. Songs included - penniless, good news. Bravo.

Concert Review: Mike Love in Hamburg, Germany @ Prinzenbar 7/24/2023

"Let the healing begin!" For the first time ever, Mike Love blessed Hamburg with his musical presence, and the location chosen was doubly ideal for the occasion. For one, it had the appropriate size to house the 100 or so guests, looking full without feeling crowded. Also, the Prinzenbar simply captivates you as soon as you enter, giving you a slightly otherworldish feel with its floral frescos and angels, the huge chandelier and the colorful lighting… a sensation I remember well from the monthly Bump 'n Grind sessions that used to keep here!

Some of the highlights for Mike Love’s upcoming dates in Europe include, Irie Vibes Roots Festival in Belgium, Rock’n Camp, Zion Garden Festival and the Summer Vibration Festival in France, along with the aforementioned Woodstock Festival in Poland.

As for the live sound, Mike Love fuses the simple rhythms of classic reggae with the complex changes of the classical and rock music he was first trained on to come up with a style wholly unique to him. Love harkens the legends of roots reggae in both his lyrics and his sound, but never relies on any one genre to hold him down. It certainly is not a fluke that Mike Love has received the prestigious Na Hoku Honohono Award (Hawaiian version of the Grammys) for Best Reggae Album .

Fans in Europe and the mainland are in for a treat once Mike Love comes to your town to perform live. It truly is a captivating live performance from one of the elite singers and musicians in the reggae genre today.

Absolutely Fabulous

Its seldom that several things culminate to produce such an incredibly entertaining and enjoyable experience. The weather was exquisite. The venue even better! Overlooking the beach on a comfortable summer night. Mike and the band were the cherry on top. Mike's uplifting sweet Reggae songs were only outdone by the high quality musicianship of the band. Even the opener, SunDub, put on a show and added to the great experience.

Mike Love Interview: Beach Boys Reunite and Tour Despite Years of Strife and Turmoil

Written by Melissa Parker , Posted in Interviews Musicians

Beach Boys

Singer, songwriter Mike Love is one of the founding members of The Beach Boys, one of the world’s most legendary bands in popular music history. In addition to Love, the group was originally comprised in 1961 with his cousins, the Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis and school friend Al Jardine.

The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari , that same year. The album spent thirty-seven weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group known for its shimmering vocal harmonies and relaxed California style into international stardom.

"Well, I mean, everybody goes through periods of where there is lack of communication and outright disagreements and stuff, but there is also a lot of positivity in The Beach Boys stuff, too. You’ve got to look at the fact that our music … we are one of the most enduring musical groups in terms of radio play, soundtracks, etc."

The Wilson/Love collaboration resulted in many huge international chart hits, and under Brian Wilson’s musical leadership, the band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, making The Beach Boys America’s preeminent band of the 1960s. For five decades, America’s first pop band to reach the fifty-year milestone has recorded and performed the music that has become the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer.

Love, Wilson, Jardine, Johnson and Marks have reunited for a global 50th anniversary celebration this year and recorded their first new material in over two decades with an album titled That’s Why God Made the Radio .

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Mike, how are you?

Mike Love : Good. I’m in a fairly dubious cell reception area in downtown Manhattan. Where are you located?

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Birmingham, Alabama. How’s the tour going?

Mike Love : It’s going really well, and the audience reception is actually pretty phenomenal. I think a lot of people are happy to see all of us together, so it’s going extremely well.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Hate that I missed the Atlanta concert.

Mike Love : Oh, that’s a drag. Chastain is a nice venue. Many times you go there in the dead of summer, and it’s too hot for an outdoor gig, but it was early enough in the year, and the weather was perfect.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : I interviewed Brian Wilson a couple of years ago when his Gershwin album was released. He was rather adamant about the fact that there wouldn’t be a Beach Boys reunion.

Mike Love : Oh, he was adamant? Had a change of mind, huh?

Beach Boys

Beach Boys (Photo by Guy Webster)

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : That’s what I’m wondering. What happened to bring you guys back together?

Mike Love : Well, we did a new album called That’s Why God Made the Radio for Capitol Records. That’s the single and the title of the album. We hadn’t gotten together for a new Beach Boys album for a couple of decades or so. That precipitated getting together in the studio. Then, a lot of interest was generated about getting us together for a 50 th anniversary reunion type of tour.

The response to the idea was so darn good that it took on a life of its own. So, here we are with seventy shows booked, not only in the US, but also in Canada, Europe and the Orient.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : So, Brian and the guys wanted to reunite.

Mike Love : It makes sense because fifty years is a pretty remarkable milestone. Brian had been doing his thing for many years, so have I and so has Bruce Johnston. We carried The Beach Boys banner for many years. Al Jardine was doing his own thing. David Marks, our original lead guitarist, was doing shows now and then. But, we all decided to get together.

It has been really good musically. Like I said, audience reception has been great. I think many people wanted to see us together, you know? They’d seen us separately and individually. It has been really good. Everybody has their own way of doing things, but we’ve put the individuals together, and now it’s awesome.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : There has been so much conflict over the years that the relationships are probably different now than they were fifty years ago, correct?

Mike Love : Well, I mean, everybody goes through periods of where there is lack of communication and outright disagreements and stuff, but there is also a lot of positivity in The Beach Boys stuff, too. You’ve got to look at the fact that our music … we are one of the most enduring musical groups in terms of radio play, soundtracks, etc.

Periodically, from time to time in the past, there has been dissension. But, that’s in the past. We all have such an ability to get together behind a microphone and create the same kind of sound we created in the mid 60s. In fact, our new album, That’s Why God Made the Radio , sounds like 1965 again.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Yes, it does. I think those old harmonies have definitely returned.

Mike Love : Oh, yeah. That’s Brian Wilson’s forte … the chord progressions. He really has a knack for it. There are some very unique things going on there. If you listen to that record, it’s just amazing.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : From the background sounds in your car, Mike, I’d bet you are not alone.

Mike Love : That’s right. We’re in an SUV going to the Jimmy Fallon show tonight.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : I’ll be sure to watch. Brian also told me he still suffers from stage fright. Is that affecting him on tour?

Mike Love : You know, sometimes he’s really engaged and really sings well. Other times, he looks kind of disengaged or distracted or something. But, sometimes when he’s singing the lead, he’s right on. He has done pretty well in the past few concerts.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : I’m losing you. Are you going through a tunnel?

Mike Love : No, just downtown Manhattan.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Actually, you, Brian and Al made your first public appearance together since 1996 at the Grammy Awards this past February. What was the atmosphere like during the first day of rehearsing with Maroon 5 and Foster The People?

Mike Love : It was pretty amazing because we were with Maroon 5, and they did “Surfer Girl.” Foster The People did “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” They were really great to honor The Beach Boys with their efforts. I mean, they weren’t on the Grammys doing their stuff. They were doing our stuff. It was really cute during rehearsals because Adam (Levine) said that he had been singing “Surfer Girl” since he was five years old (laughs).

Mark Foster told us a story about his mom taking him to our concert when he was about nine years old. He has been a lifelong Beach Boys fan. They did “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and I thought they did a really good job. I said to them, “I’m a little worried. You’re doing the song too well.”

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Has John Stamos showed up on the tour?

Mike Love : John introduced us at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. It was really nice. He played with us on “Be True To Your School” and “Surfin’ USA.” He played the conga drums on “Kokomo,” just like he did on the video. John has been a longtime fan of The Beach Boys.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Was the writing on the album a collaborative effort?

Mike Love : Most of them were done by Brian, but they asked me to do lyrics on several of the songs.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Is there a tribute to Carl and Dennis Wilson during the show?

Mike Love : We have a video of the song, “Forever,” that Dennis wrote, and Carl doing “God Only Knows.” He, of course, did it beautifully and was a great singer. So, that’s kind of neat. We include everybody. It’s a really inclusive show.

Brian is on keyboards, of course, except he plays bass on “Barbara Ann.” It’s really cool. We back up Carl and Dennis on those songs. It means a lot to those of the age to remember the group and its origins. Those are pretty emotional moments.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Give me some memories of Dennis and Carl.

Mike Love : Dennis was a wild man. He was so energetic on the drums. But, he was the most generous person. He gave everything he could in the shows. He was really energetic. The girls loved him. Later on, he got involved with alcohol and some drugs, and that led to his demise ultimately in 1983.

Carl was a wonderful singer. He was a bandleader actually. He always took everything so seriously with making the band the best he possibly could make it. It’s just déjà vu to hear him sing “God Only Knows” in the video. It’s so emotional.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Fact or fiction: Dennis once beat up Charles Manson.

Mike Love : I don’t know. I do not know. But, Charles and the Family were his roommates at one time, so … pretty weird.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Mike, did you ever enter the drug or alcohol scene?

Mike Love : No. Neither I nor Bruce nor Alan was into that. The Wilson brothers got into that. I got into Transcendental Meditation taught by Maharishi. It helped give me more energy over the years and clarity, all the benefits that are highly valuable for an active life of touring and all that kind of stuff. That keeps you from resorting to things like excessive drinking of liquor or drugs or anything that people usually use for escape, usually looking to relax or escape.

Transcendental Meditation has been a way to transcend beyond all of the stuff that life throws at you and gives you a broader perspective and more energy and clarity with which to deal with whatever you’ve got to deal with. I do it every day, a couple of times a day. It’s really good.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Is your son, Christian, touring with you now?

Mike Love : Right now, he’s playing beach volleyball and surfing. Ordinarily he does, but because of this reunion thing, it’s a slightly different situation. So, Christian is not with us at the moment. We do some occasional private stuff and still get together and perform. He has a beautiful voice and is a great singer.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Are any of your other children interested in music?

Mike Love : Yes, actually. My youngest daughter, Ambha, who is sixteen years old is a soul singer. She’s a beautiful girl, a very soulful singer like Amy Winehouse or Beyonce, any of those ladies who are soulful singers. She’s really good. Hey, we’re walking into the Fallon show here, getting on an elevator, if I lose you.

Melissa Parker ( Smashing Interviews Magazine ) : Quickly, what does the future hold for The Beach Boys?

Mike Love : I think a lot of stuff, as long as we still have health and talent …

Exclusive: Mike Love ‘Looking Forward’ to Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour

By Patrick Doyle

Patrick Doyle

Though Mike Love has never stopped touring under the Beach Boys name, fans will finally get the chance to see the band’s original surviving members play once again on their upcoming 50th anniversary blowout , kicking off in April at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Rolling Stone caught up with Love about the milestone, the band’s upcoming album of new material and how everybody is getting along. “What a phenomenal legacy to celebrate,” says Love. “Music has been the harmonizing element in our family since childhood. It’s great to come full circle and ponder that and celebrate that. We’re very fortunate to ‘Do It Again,’ so to speak.”

This news is pretty exciting for your fans. Well, if you think about it, it’s 50 years of “Fun, Fun, Fun.”

Has it been all  “ Fun, Fun, Fun “ ? Of course not. But I think the story of the Beach Boys is told in the music and the legacy to the world, not all the yellow journalism. I think the overwhelming story is the impact, the legacy of the music. It’s really cool that we can all get together this time and celebrate along with anyone else who wants to celebrate with us.

How did the band approach putting the tour together? We figured it makes sense to do it during the summer. Our [2003 compilation] album the Sounds of Summer is fast approaching selling three million copies – if it’s triple-platinum, which is, you know, pretty good. And by the time this 50th celebration is over, it’ll probably be more than triple-platinum.

Who had the idea for the 50th   anniversary tour first? Who reached out to who? Everybody reached out. I’m looking forward to getting together with Brian, writing something together again. His musical nature is so phenomenal. Even doing the background vocals we did in the studio recently, he was just sitting at the piano and stretching those chords the way he does spontaneously. It’s just amazing.

It’s thrilling because that’s what we’re so used to hearing from him back in the day when we were very productive, putting out an album every few months. It hasn’t gone away. It’s just nature. And my nature is the way it is, conceptually and lyrically. Some people are denizens of the studio. I’m more of a denizen of the live appearance. I love the live thing. I love the spontaneity and the recreating of those songs.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Is this just a one-off get-together for this tour? Or are the Beach Boys back together? We’re just approaching it a day at a time, one tour at a time. We’re going to do some European stuff, it looks like. Right now, it’s just offers. Other than three dates in Japan in August, that’s confirmed. Everything else is subject to offers and negotiations.

You ‘ re going to play Jazz Fest, that ‘ s the first one. Will you guys play consecutively after that? Will you head out on the road? The idea is to do four or five shows a week for the weeks up until the weeks we’re intending to go to Europe. I wish I could say more definitively exactly what we’re going to do.

I assume the band will be playing outdoor amphitheaters in the U.S.? I’m hoping that we’ll do places associated with summer. We’re open to doing whatever makes sense, whoever wants us.

What will the backing band look like? Brian Wilson has an incredible band. We’re using most of his band. And we’ve got [current Beach Boys touring] drummer John Cowsill and our guitarist, Scott Totten. We’re kind of blending things together.  I think, musically, it’s going to be incredible.

How will these shows differ from your Beach Boys shows? What do you think the set list will be like? From what I understand, from a few of the promoters and venues that want us, they want to hear a lot of hits. But I think stuff from the Pet Sounds album and Smile will undoubtedly be included. It will be a comprehensive thing. We’re going to try and be as inclusive of all the eras of the Beach Boys music as representatives of our catalogues because I know there are some people that are into one phase or another of our career, so we’ll try to do what we can to incorporate everybody’s wish list. That would be tough to do unless we did a week at Carnegie Hall. We’ve got hundreds of songs.

How ‘ s the album coming so far? We have not done much on that. There have been some songs written and we have recorded on a few things, just a handful of things. The next couple months are going to be, that’s going to be our to-do list. There’s a lot of creativity coming from myself, coming from Brian. David Marks has a title I really like, so I’m going to work with him on that.

The Beach Boys Catch a Wave While Navigating Harmony and Discord in New Doc Trailer

The beach boys will tell their own story in new documentary, calling all hotties: how to buy tickets to megan thee stallion's 'hot girl summer' tour.

It ‘ s amazing David Marks is going to be there. Yeah! David rocks. A phenomenal guitarist. When he does those leads on “Surfin’,” “Surfin’ Safari” and “Fun, Fun, Fun,” it’s so authentic. He and Carl committed on playing guitar since they were 10 years old and we neighbors with each other from across the street in Hawthorne. He’s a fantastic musician and a really fantastic guy to be with. He went through his issues with alcohol, but he’s completely cooled out for maybe 10 years now. It’s going to be really great to be with him.

How is everybody getting along now? I think great. A lot of the ups and downs were as the result of other people’s incursions, I would say, whether it be a Murry Wilson or a Dr. Landy, you know. Everybody’s getting along great.

Is Brian excited? I don’t know. Have you talked to him?

Not lately. Maybe it was a bad day, but I talked to him a couple months back and he didn ‘ t seem that keen on the idea of the tour. I heard about that. Brian will say, one day, “I really miss Mike.” And then the next day he’ll say, “All right, I don’t want to do anything with those guys.” He has his moods, no doubt about it. But I think he’s really looking forward to getting in the studio with the voices that he hears in his head when he does the harmony on the keyboard.

Trump privately rages about his sketch artist, courtroom nap reports, pink files legal action against pharrell williams over musician's proposed p.inc. trademark, trump's super pac has been footing his legal bills. now it's running out of money.

Do you know when the album might come out? I really don’t. We’ll have to do it first.

Sometime in the next year? Oh, hell yeah.

The Beach Boys’ Mike Love: ‘I used to call Brian Wilson the Stalin of the studio’

As the celebrated band turn 60, surviving members talk about the group’s dramatic ups and downs

Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson (in truck), Brian Wilson and David Marks in LA in 1962

The Beach Boys turned 60 this year. “It’s kind of miraculous,” says Mike Love, 81, calling from his home in Lake Tahoe, California. “What started as a family hobby became a profession, and a vocation. Not without challenges, changes, ups and downs. We lost a couple along the way. But we’re still on the road, keeping those songs alive. And maybe the songs keep us alive, too.”

They are certainly not boys anymore. “We didn’t name ourselves, but I always thought it was confining,” admits 80-year-old Al Jardine, calling from Big Sur, California. The band formed as the Pendletones, but in 1962 their record label changed the name for their debut single, Surfin’.

“The fantasy of the romantic California coast, the sunshine, surfing, cars, girls , somehow our voices encompassed all of that.” Their image of eternal youth in an endless summer has proved both a blessing and a curse. “They never wanted us to grow up, that’s for sure,” admits Jardine.

Formed by brothers Carl, Brian and Dennis Wilson, with cousin Love and school friend Jardine, the Beach Boys’ earliest incarnation was perhaps pop’s purest expression of the escapist joys of youth. With the brilliant Brian Wilson as musical leader, they combined the harmonies of doo wop with streamlined rock ‘n’ roll for upbeat hits including Surfin’ USA, Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around and California Girls. By the high watermark of 1966 album Pet Sounds, Brian’s genius made them the Beatles’ greatest rivals. But deteriorating mental health led to his retreat from the limelight, while the group struggled to break free of their surf pop image.

The 60th anniversary is commemorated by the release of Sail On Sailor – 1972, a box-set covering a strange period in their history, its famous title song sung by a young black South African, Terence “Blondie” Chaplin.

Current line-up: Brian Eichenberger, Tim Bonhomme, Keith Hubacher, Mike Love, Christian Love, John Stamos, and Scott Totten perform in 2021

“I guess it seems bizarre, but it was gas being an African Beach Boy,” chuckles 71-year-old Chaplin, down the phone from Los Angeles, where he still works as a session musician. Chaplin and drummer Ricky Fataar were spotted playing in Annabel’s nightclub in London with South African R’n’B group, The Flames. “They knocked us off our feet,” recalls Jardine. Carl flew them to LA and produced The Flames’s eponymous 1970 album. “They became our house band. They were terrific musicians, instrumental in pushing our music in a funkier direction.”

The now classic Sail On, Sailor had been written by Brian, who failed to attend the recording session. Dennis was singing lead, but “he had his surfboard in the back of his truck and couldn’t wait to get the f--- out. He said, ‘Hey man, the surf’s pretty good’, and he was gone. Carl tried it but didn’t like the timbre of his voice. There was nobody else in the place, so I gave it a go”.

The line-up changes helped cover deep problems within the band. “Drugs created a schism,” admits Love. “Alan and myself did not engage in any of those types of things, like LSD, cocaine and worse. But the Wilson boys did. We even had two jets for touring, a smokers’ jet and a non-smoker.” The Wilsons’ abusive father Murry sold the Beach Boys publishing behind their backs, his bullying behaviour contributing to mental health issues that led to Brian abdicating leadership to Carl, while drummer Dennis was going through what Jardine describes as “personal traumas and lifestyle changes”. His marriage broke up, and he lived on his boat, indulging his passion for the sea.

“Dennis wrecked his hand going through a glass door, and couldn’t play drums, so Ricky came in to help out,” recalls Love. “Blondie Chaplin was a fantastic singer, his voice gave us a harder R’n’B edge. There had been a tremendous musical evolution, but Capitol Records were still promoting us as the number one surfing group in the US. Carl thought the guys from South Africa would really help communicate that we’d changed.”

Carl’s leadership style was more democratic than his brother’s. “I used to call Brian the Stalin of the studio,” says Love. “There wasn’t a lot of room for debate, put it that way.” The first fruit was 1972’s Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” album, which attempted a reinvention by presenting them under a new identity. Then followed one of the oddest episodes in their history, with the band shipping their recording equipment to Holland and building a studio in a barn. “It was a complete mess,” recalls Chaplin. “We were close to train tracks, so when the train came the whole studio shook, and you had to stop for a couple of minutes and then get back to work again.”

tmg.video.placeholder.alt ruKCw797JM4

Holland was a financial disaster. “It was so expensive to make, I don’t think we ever recouped,” notes Jardine. “But here we are, 50 damn years later, still talking about it.” It went some way to restoring the Beach Boys’ critical reputation, although the new line-up did not last. “That was a really good band,” says Chaplin. “But there was a lot of friction. Ricky and I were having fun, but we weren’t the principals. We were on a long tour, and I got into an argument with one of the guy’s brothers (Stephen Love), and he took it upon himself to dish me a couple of blows. I just said, ‘Screw it, I don’t need to play with people who use muscle’. So I went my merry way, and not long after that, Ricky went as well.”

Fataar later appeared as guitarist Stig O’Hara in Eric Idle’s 1978 Beatles parody, The Rutles, and has spent 30 years with Bonnie Raitt’s band. Chaplin spent 15 years as a backing musician for the Rolling Stones. Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983, at the age of 39. Brian was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 1978 and became increasingly estranged from the band. Carl died of lung cancer in 1998, aged 51. Mike Love was granted an exclusive licence to perform under the Beach Boys name and has maintained a constant touring regime, while Jardine performs solo and as a member of Brian Wilson’s band. “I’ve been the one person who’s never quit,” says Love. Despite multiple lawsuits between Love and other surviving members, there was a harmonious reunion for a 50th anniversary in 2012, before they went their separate ways again.

“When Brian and I are together, we’re fine,” insists Love. “We’re family, we did some fantastic work together. Good Vibrations was probably the piece de resistance. Brian spent months taking bits and pieces from different studio sessions. I don’t think anyone had ever heard anything like it. Then I wrote the lyrics in a few minutes in a taxi on the way to the studio. It was a miracle it all came together. There was magic in the air.”

For Love, that magic is recreated nightly. “We have experienced the loss of loved ones, it’s tough stuff. But the beauty of music is that if you can sing that part, you can replicate that moment. Even though some are unable to be with us anymore, in a sense they still are. Carl, Dennis, Brian, everybody. We don’t forget.”

Sail On Sailor – 1972 is out now on Capitol/UME. An expanded edition of Al Jardine’s 2010 album Postcard From California featuring all the Beach Boys is released tomorrow

Beach Boys' Mike Love on giving the Beatles songwriting tips and life with Brian Wilson

mike love europe tour

Mike Love was obviously pleased to see the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” holding strong at No. 2 in the latest update of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in Rolling Stone , with only Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” above it on the 2023 edition of the list.

“When I first saw that, I said, ‘Well, I demand a recount,” he says with a laugh. “Being the bratty sort of guy that I am, you know? But anyway, no, that’s pretty good company, don’t you think?”

Love is speaking by phone from the Caribbean, about to catch a flight to Phoenix to visit his son, Brian, who lives in Scottsdale, before a string of tour dates with his latest version of the Beach Boys that includes performances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, and Talking Stick Resort in metro Phoenix (on Friday, April 26).

Here’s what he had to say.

Mike Love on the Beach Boys at Stagecoach Festival: 'We do what we do'

It's interesting to see the Beach Boys at a country music festival. Have you done Stagecoach before?

No, although we did appear with our friends LoCash on that stage a couple years ago . They did a song called 'Beach Boys.' It's, like, some country guys going to the beach. And they asked us to sing with them, so we did.

So you're just doing your normal Beach Boys set at Stagecoach?

Well, yeah, we do what we do, you know? We'll do all our hit songs that we're known for, everything from “Surfin' Safari” and Surfin’ U.S.A.” to “I Get Around” and “Fun, Fun, Fun” to “California Girls” and “Help Me, Rhonda,” “Good Vibrations” and “Kokomo.” And John Stamos is gonna be with us. He loves to come out and play drums with us.

Beach Boys flashback: How the Beach Boys took 'small town' Phoenix by storm in 1964: 'It was a big thing'

Paul McCartney's Beach Boys moment on 'Back in the U.S.S.R'

It’s great to see “Pet Sounds” hanging strong at No. 2 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

It's amazing. Bruce Johnston, who joined our group in 1965 to take Brian Wilson's place after Glen Campbell filled in for six months or so, actually took the album as an acetate, before it was printed up. Keith Moon of the Who introduced Bruce to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. So he played the album for them a couple of times in his suite.

We have a connection that goes back many years with the Beatles. And, of course, I spent a couple of months in Rishikesh at the Maharishi's place. I didn't know before I got there but when I did get there the Beatles were all there. That was a fascinating time. Meditation and music. In fact, I was the first person to hear “Back in the U.S.S.R.” from Paul McCartney's acoustic guitar at the breakfast table one morning.

What did you think of them doing their Beach Boys thing on “Back in the U.S.S.R.”?

I thought it was amazing. I was staying in the same sort of area. It was like a motel kind of thing. Paul was down at the other end. And Prudence Farrow was in a similar area. You know, John Lennon came up with that song “Dear Prudence.” But yeah, when Paul came down, he said, “Listen to this, Mike. Flew in from Miami Beach, BOAC” and all that.

I said, “Well, Paul, what you've got to do is talk about all the girls around Russia in the middle part,” which he did. So it turns out Sir Paul is pretty capable of crafting a tune.

There was a lot of music that came out of that course. They actually did a song called “The Spiritual Rejuvenation Foundation” and played it for me on my birthday. It was styled after “Fun, Fun, Fun.” I had my birthday on the 15th of March and George Harrison had his on the 25th of February. So we're both Pisces, as it turns out, and we're both very much into our meditation.

Do you find that meditation help with creativity?

Yeah, just life in general. And I'm in a creative field. So it's absolutely helped me a lot. On a practical level, Transcendental Meditation, which is taught by Maharishi, your metabolism slows down to a level of rest twice as deep as sleep. So you get this profoundly restful relaxation, which is great for everything, your emotions and your physical well-being. I've been doing it since December of '67 when I first learned meditation from Maharishi.

Mike Love on the Beach Boys throwing a curve with 'Pet Sounds'

Getting back to "Pet Sounds," does it feel as through that album has been getting more and more appreciated as it ages?

You know, Capitol Records really didn't know when we first made it what to do with it . So it never got the push that it probably deserved, because we really put a lot into that album. But it was regarded very highly by all the people in the music business. Paul McCartney once said that “God Only Knows” was his favorite song. I mean, that's a pretty fantastic statement coming from a guy who's written some of the most famous and best songs ever.

But Capitol Records really didn't know what to do with it because it was such a departure. When we played the record for the A&R guy, the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet, he wanted something more like “California Girls,” “I Get Around” and “Fun, Fun, Fun” because they'd had so much success with that type of thing.

But here's an album with symphonic orchestrations and stuff, dealing more with emotional themes than, you know, the beach or girls or cars, which there's nothing wrong with that stuff. I love it. But they just didn't know how to handle it. Then “Good Vibrations” came along a few months after that and went to No 1. and we were voted the No. 1 group in Great Britain, No. 2 being the Beatles, on the strength of “Good Vibrations.”

“Barbara Ann” came out in the first part of the year, then “Pet Sounds” and “Good Vibrations.” That was quite a year for us, 1966.

That was quite a year for you. Could you address the stories we've all heard that you were not a fan of what Brian had come up with for “Pet Sounds” when you first heard it?

That's really not true. I don't know. There's always been detractors. But no, I worked on every song on that album and even wrote some of the words. So that's absolutely inaccurate. In fact, I named the album “Pet Sounds.” Brian didn't know what to call it. I said, “Well, how about 'Pet Sounds?'” And that led to our going to the San Diego Zoo, the petting zoo, and taking the album cover photo, which is pretty trippy.

Anyway, so yeah, I came up with the title of the album. And I'm the one that presented it to Capitol Records along with Brian. He and I were the ones that took that album and played it for them.

And Capitol was like, “Well, we don’t hear a single?”

Well, they were used to getting these two-, three-minute singles that were so successful. And it was kind of a departure. But hey, that was how many years ago now? It’s all worked out. We do “God Only Knows,” “Sloop John B” and “Wouldn't It Be Nice” at virtually every concert we do. So it's well represented in our shows along with the other singles we've managed to have been blessed enough to have.

I mean, we're one of the top groups ever in terms of number of Top 40 singles.

Mike Love on thought of another reunion with Brian Wilson

You guys reunited with Brian and Al Jardine for a 50th anniversary tour and album. Do you think we'll ever see all the guys come together like that again?

I think maybe it would be interesting if we could get in the studio, but Brian's not doing very well lately. I hope the best for him. And I think it'd be great if we could, but we'll have to see if it actually can happen. Brian hasn't been touring for the last year or so. And I'm not anticipating him going out anymore. In fact, they're putting him in a conservatorship or something. (Multiple news outlets have reported that Wilson's family has asked a court in Los Angeles to set up a conservatorship for Wilson.)

But there is a documentary coming out on the Beach Boys and we ended up getting together at Paradise Cove, the beach where we took our first album cover shots. So it was really nice. Brian and I were reminiscing together, along with the other guys, about stuff that happened when we used to go to high school games together. He remembers things that I'd forgotten. So that was pretty neat, to get together and reminisce with my cousin.

It sounds like you guys are in a better place these days?

Oh yeah, for sure. Yeah, absolutely. Especially with Brian. We go back to childhood together. The first time I remember hearing him sing, I was on my grandmother Wilson's lap singing “Danny Boy.” And we grew up singing all the Everly Brothers songs, Chuck Berry songs and all the doo-wop songs of the day. So we have a lifetime of experiences and love and respect for each other's abilities.

That's sweet. You said you could see getting together in the studio. What did you think of the way “That's Why God Made the Radio” turned out?

Well, I don't know what to say about that in a positive way, because I was told that I was gonna be able to get together with Brian and write. But that was disallowed at the time by I'm not sure who. But anyway, that didn't happen. That was kind of an inducement to me for all of us to get together, actually, but it didn't turn out the way I would've liked it, so.... That's too bad, though. Missed opportunity, I think.

Mike Love on the latest round of Beach Boys reissues

There's been some interesting reissue projects lately. Box sets combining “Sunflower” and “Surf's Up” and then “Carl and the Passions” and “Holland.” What did you think of those projects?

Great. I mean, “Holland” was a fantastic experience. I lived in Holland for six months. We wanted to get away from L.A. to record it and live in a completely different country. It was pretty fascinating. I thought it was great. In the meantime, we're in Holland doing “California Saga,” a trilogy about Big Sur and stuff. “Holland” was great.

Every album has something special about it. A couple of those albums are where individuals came out with their creativity, whether it be Carl or Brian, Alan or Dennis, Bruce Johnston. Everybody got a chance to be a little bit creative, whereas up through “Pet Sounds” and “Good Vibrations,” primarily Brian was the writer and producer.

I mean, I co-wrote with him tons of words and hooks on all the hit singles, although it wasn't originally credited, because my uncle (Murry Wilson, who managed the Beach Boys until they fired him and controlled their publishing until 1969), frankly, cheated me on that part of things, which, you know.... But that was rectified . Anyway, all the albums had their own personality.

I've been listening to “Friends” a lot lately. Such an underrated album.

That's precisely what I mean. There are many great tunes on some of those lesser-known albums. Every group has its heyday. But we've been blessed enough to hang on to millions of fans who still love to hear our song. So we're very fortunate to be able to do a lifetime of music and still have some of our albums regarded very highly.

Do you have a personal favorite Beach Boys album?

You know what? I don't know. It's like, “Do you have a personal favorite kid?”

Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist discuss Challengers's love triangle between tennis stars

Mike Faist, Zendaya and Josh O'Connor in Challengers

In love triangle dramedy Challengers, the main love of Zendaya's character Tashi isn't her husband Art (Mike Faist) nor is it her ex-boyfriend and Art's former friend/doubles partner Patrick (Josh O'Connor).

It's tennis – and she'll do anything to get a good rally going, especially after a college injury college dashes her chances at going pro.

"[Tennis] got taken away from her way too early," Zendaya tells ABC Entertainment.

"And she never really got to mourn the loss of her life, and career, everything that she didn't get to have. And I think it's taking a bigger toll on her than she really expected."

Gesturing towards co-stars O'Connor and Faist, she adds, "These men are her avenues to keep herself above water and to keep her life, so she won't have to deal with the fact that she's kind of miserable and sad about a lot of things and should probably go to therapy. It's much easier to use them."

Two men talk to one another sitting down in front of a glass window, the backdrop taken up by green leaves.

Challengers's tense love triangle jumps back and forth over 13 years, seeing an injured Tashi take on Art as both husband and protégée, coaching him to success and brand deals while Patrick's potential fizzles out.

"What she ended up doing is finding someone, or choosing someone, that she thinks is malleable enough to get her close to her true want – tennis," adds Zendaya.

"It's sad and it's painful, because it's someone she cares about and loves."

As Art's interest and world-ranking falls, Tashi signs him up for a low-stakes ATP Challenger Tour as a wildcard, so he'll regain confidence by besting easy targets. No surprises for guessing who he ends up against, in a match more meaningful than any Grand Slam win.

"There's this envy-jealousy thing with Patrick at the beginning, where [Art] wishes he could have his skill set and ability," says Faist. "And same with Tashi, as well."

Blurred lines on and off court

Fitting snugly within director Luca Guadagnino's ( Call Me By Your Name , A Bigger Splash, Bones and All ) filmography, the film's through-line is sinewy, relentless desire, where affection and antagonism blur together.

Patrick and Art's attraction to each other only becomes explicit once — with the two preferring to express their feelings via their mutual obsessive desires, tennis and Tashi. When a teenage Tashi invites them both into bed, she leans back from their three-way kisses with a smile, letting them have at each other.

Patrick continually peacocks for attention, whether approaching Art nude in a sauna or suggestively eating a banana side-court, a moment O'Connor says was inspired by Australia's Nick Kyrgios, who was fined in 2018 for stimulating masturbation on his water bottle and squirting water during a match break.

Actor Josh O'Connor holding a tennis racket in character as Patrick in Challengers

Patrick and Art's tension has no interest in subtext, and neither does the film, which sees Tashi compare tennis to sex.

While Challengers bursts with energy across its 131-minute run time, the matches are frenetic highlights – a series of grunts and groans and extreme close-ups of the actor's sweat-soaked faces with slow motion drips, before the camera takes the place of the ball, fired back-and-forth furiously.

All the while, throbbing techno pulses in and out from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, rendering Art and Patrick's leaps, lobs and whacks into a depraved late-night dance, a courtship for each other.

It's hyper-erotic to the point of parody, as the film is enveloped by the trio's seductive, intense dynamic, with Zendaya joking Challengers's tagline should be "Co-dependency: The Movie".

This dynamic leads all three to some contemptuous behaviour that's very fun to watch, provided audiences don't get caught on their moral compasses. At the world premiere in Sydney, attended by the three leads, Zendaya asked audiences to not judge Tashi too much – an impulse O'Connor says he understands.

Actors Mike Faist, Zendaya and Josh O'Connor on the red carpet as photographers take photos

"You don't just play a villain – when you're playing [one], you have to believe they're doing the right thing," he says.

"There are times when I felt for Patrick. He just really wants his best friend back, and he really is in love with this person. And he wants to be a successful tennis player. All those things, all those wants."

The Zendaya effect

Zendaya's star power only seems to be accumulating, as she moves from her days as a Disney star to top-billed roles in Spider-Man, HBO series Euphoria and Dune.

Zendaya stands against a photo wall for Challengers in a green glittery dress with an outline of a tennis player and ball.

Challengers also marks the 27-year-old's first producer credit for a cinematic release. Without existing IP to bring in audiences, the film is banking on audiences being drawn in by Zendaya's name, something the star is happy to leverage if it means interesting work gets made.

"I want more stories like this, things that are dynamic and entertaining, but also emotional and complicated," she says.

"With complicated, fascinating, kind of terrifying characters that are nuanced – and with great filmmakers, and great actors and people that I enjoy working with."

Challengers is now in cinemas.
