McNight Foundation Vibrant & Equitable Communities Grants Equity is one of the four core values in McKnight’s Strategic Framework. It is a value that we challenge ourselves to uphold in our internal policies and practices, and it is a value that guides the Foundation as we imagine the change we want to see in our broader society.

McKnight developed this program because we see equity as a powerful force multiplier that enriches the quality of life for all Minnesotans. We all benefit when we promote equitable opportunity and access for residents across Minnesota, especially those who have historically not fully shared in our state’s storied economic, educational, and civic success—such as Black Minnesotans, Indigenous communities, Minnesotans of color, and low-income Minnesotans.

  • Only one application per school district per year may be submitted.
  • All trips must be pre-approved by the American Battlefield Trust to receive funding.
  • Funding may be revoked by the American Battlefield Trust at any time for the following reason(s): post-approval trip date change, post-approval destination change(s), number of participants change, not providing receipts in a timely and efficient manner, falsified receipts, no trip receipts, excessive guide fees, class/teacher not fulfilling their required photo, press release, and thank you note requirements.
  • The History Field Trip Grant Program program requires you to submit at least seven (7) photos from your trip, a submission of a completed press release to your local newspaper (template will be provided), at least five (5) thank you notes from your students, and also requires the completion of an online exit survey by the applicant. Field trips will not be funded without such a commitment.

  • All payments will be dispersed to the school or school district within 28 business days of submission to the American Battlefield Trust.
  • All checks will be made payable to the school or school district. In no case will payments be made to an individual educator, parent, or administrator.
  • Check out our Frequently Asked Questions  for more information.

Our Decision-Making Process

Given that demand for History Field Trip Grant Program grants far outpaces our available resources, we are historically able to offer grants to only half of applicants. Thus, although decisions are made on a rolling basis, we evaluate applications using the following criteria to maximize the program's impact for approvals and funding is impacted by the following criteria and others:

  • School's financial needs.
  • School's geographic location.
  • The number of students and chaperones participating in said field trip.
  • The thoroughness of the application packet.
  • The number of prior field trips the American Battlefield Trust has funded for your school. Classrooms that received a grant in the 2022-2023 school year may not be eligible for a grant in the 2023-2024 school year.
  • The frequency of other approved field trips to a specific battlefield, museum, and other historic site destinations.
  • The certitude of teacher's plans.
  • Demonstrable positive impact on your students.
  • Battlefield-centric experiences.
  • Field trip destination(s).
  • Planned activities while on your field trip.
  • Availability of History Field Trip Grant Program funds.

Grants & Awards

2023 ag literacy grant program application, due date: september 1, 2023.

Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) is a unique public/private partnership between the MAITC Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The MAITC Foundation has included the Ag Literacy Grant program in their budget. The maximum grant request is $500.

Ag Literacy Grant Program Overarching Goal

To provide cash awards to K-12 educators to encourage them to bring agriculture and food systems education "to life" by effectively integrating related content into their classroom or school. Grants are available for new ideas as well as enhancements to current events/activities. MAITC aims to fund projects that provide students the opportunity to experience agriculture in a cross-curricular manner. We strongly encourage teachers to utilize the many educational resources provided by MAITC free of charge. You can find them by clicking on the "EDUCATOR CENTER" link in the main navigation in our website.

Eligibility

Ag literacy grant for teachers.

First time applicants will have priority for funding. Grants supporting field trips to working farms or agriculture businesses are encouraged. Non-formal education applications will also be considered based on strength of application and the availability of funds.

Ag Literacy Grant for 4-H/FFA

FFA chapters and 4-H programs are also eligible for grant funds to promote agricultural literacy with other groups (ex: elementary school). The application asks FFA and 4-H chapters to identify which National Agricultural Literacy Outcome (NALO) the grant project covers. Applications submitted by these groups should show a partnership with a K-12 classroom teacher(s) outside of the school's agricultural education program. NALO booklet can be found here: https://cdn.agclassroom.org/nat/data/get/NALObooklet.pdf.

Application and Review Process

  • Applications are due by midnight September 1, 2023.
  • All grants will be evaluated by a Grant Review Committee. MAITC staff is not involved in funding decisions.
  • Grant winners will be notified by October 15, 2023.
  • MAITC reserves the right to deny an application based on quality, adherence to grant criteria and/or available dollars.

Important Grant Judging Criteria

  • Innovation and sustainability are additional factors the grant committee will use in scoring grant applications this year.
  • When developing ideas for your grant application, please consider ways you can engage students in understanding agriculture from farm to plate, and how agriculture impacts all of us within our local community, state, nation and around the world.
  • MAITC defines agriculture as the industry that grows, harvests and brings us food, fiber, trees, turf and landscaping materials. It brings us almost everything we eat, wear and use each day.
  • It is important that you complete the application with sufficient detail and rigor. Poorly thought out or incomplete applications will be denied!
  • Please also provide a detailed budget. Specifically, we encourage you to pursue matching funds or other in-kind support from other sources to strengthen your application. Please list any such support on your application.

Grant Implementation Ideas

  • Use grant funds to purchase needed supplies for the many lessons showcased in the Curriculum Matrix and/or AgVentures . Check the the National Ag in the Classroom estore for easy to order lesson materials.
  • Learn about agriculture first in the classroom and then culminate this experience by going on field trip to a working crop and/or livestock farm.
  • Learn about the farm to plate cycle first in the classroom and then culminate this experience by going on a field trip to a processing business such as a cheese plant, ethanol facility, meat processor, etc. Please check out farmcampminnesota.org for more information on a customized immersive field trip experience.
  • FFA chapters can apply for funds to support an "Ag Day" event at the elementary school to include animal contact center, classroom presentations and interactive learning stations.
