Looking back on your travel life, the colors will clasp with you immensely. The Mae Hong Son Motorcycle Guide

Thailand is a phenomenal place to ride a motorcycle. It has both insane off-road riding and incredible tarmacked roads. But there’s one route that sits high above the rest – literally: The Mae Hong Son Loop. Not only is this mountainous paradise one of the best riding roads in Thailand, the Mae Hong Son Loop is one of the best motorcycle rides in the world.

Seriously, it’s that good. The sheer amount of twists, turns, twirls and curls are ridiculous. It makes Germany’s B500 look like the M4 from Swindon to Heathrow. Over 400 miles of non-stop sweepers and switchbacks through Thailand’s lush north is pure motorcycling bliss.

The road carves its way through overhanging forests and lures you in with superbly crafted corners. You’ll only remember where you are when it allows you to pop out for a gasp of air and a quick mountain vista before you to take a deep breath and burrow back in for more.

The Mae Hong Son route

The Mae Hong Son Loop’s start and end point is Chiang Mai. This makes life easier as it’s one of Thailand’s best cities, a good place to rest up and easy to rent a motorcycle if you don’t have your own.

The main destinations are Chiang Mai – Wat Chan – Pai – Mae Hong Son – Mae Sariang – Mae Chaem – Chiang Mai.

The best Mae Hong Son riding route

Google the Mae Hong Son Loop and you’ll find about four million guides (slight exaggeration) from tourists who have rented scooters and written reams of info on their daily itinerary, hiking routes and caves along the way. They’ve also missed out a few of the best roads. This guide doesn’t list a day-by-day what to do or sights along the way – it’s purely a route to take in the best motorcycle riding.

It doesn’t really matter if you go clockwise or anti-clockwise. If you’re not after doing the loop, but are just touring through Thailand, then we suggest going anti-clockwise and continuing your journey in whichever direction from Mae Sariang.

What to see on your Mae Hong Son motorcycle trip

When you reach Mae Hong Son, there are a few Long Neck villages close by. Visiting these places is a catch-22 and moral dilemma. Take a look at the Stuck in Thailand blog post as we detail our interview with the women and thoughts on the subject. If you do decide to go, then we recommend the Huai Suea Tao village. The women there are struggling since a Long Neck Tribe was moved closer to Chiang Mai, which means that less people travel so far out to see them.

Continuing south

If you aren’t heading back to Chiang Mai, then we recommend heading south from Mae Sariang to Mae Sot. It’s a beautiful stretch of road that hugs the Thailand/Burma border. When to ride the Mae Hong Son loop

Thailand’s busiest months are December and January. If you’re on a fly-and-ride trip, then these are the most expensive months to fly into the country.

November, December, January, February: Winter months, cool, dry and the best time to visit.

March, April (hot), May, June: Hot season and less rain. It’s also the time of year that people light thousands of illegal fires in the north. The entire north is engulfed in smoke and smog and the pollution levels are extremely bad.

July, August, September, October: Monsoon season. Take care of slippery asphalt and pack waterproofs.

How to get there

If you’re renting or buying a motorcycle in Thailand then chances are you’ll be flying into the country, or flying to a neighbouring country and crossing the border. Motorcycle gear and clothing for Thailand

The Mae Hong Son Loop is a fast road with many bends and tight turns. It is definitely worth wearing proper motorcycle gear. You can rent or buy cheap and decent kit in Chiang Mai if you don’t have your own.

We recommend mesh lined kit. It’s best not to go for gear with inner liners and especially nothing pro laminate as it won’t be breathable. If you have a motorcycle adventure suit with removable waterproof and thermal liners, just throw those away as your’re not going to want to your jacket off, zip a liner inside it and then put it back on in a rainstorm.

Go for cheap meshed jackets and trousers and carry a cheap and cheerful set of throw-over waterproofs in case of bad weather.

A scooter is fine too, but you won’t get the most out of the actual riding experience if that’s what you’re after. A sportsbike would be exceptionally fun, but you’d need to be a very experienced rider to use a high capacity sportsbike on these types of roads.

A lightweight, mid-capacity twin or single would be your best bet to get the most out of the turns.

If you’re renting a motorcycle, then you don’t need an off-road bike with big 21-inch wheels as that will hinder your turning. A 17- or 19-inch front would be perfect with road going rubber.

Mae Hong Son rental motorcycles and tours

There are plenty of rental and tour companies in Thailand who cater for motorcycle travellers. Make sure you check the bike over well, test the brakes, be sure there’s enough life in the tyres, the levers work and the bars are aligned. The Fly and Ride guide listed below has loads more info on renting bikes abroad.

It’s always worth taking out additional motorcycle insurance, make sure the company you’re renting from offers it. Bear in mind that they won’t offer personal travel insurance. Be sure to get a policy from your home country before you travel.

If you’re not comfortable renting a bike and going alone, there are many reputable companies who offer brilliant tours along the Mae Hong Son Loop as well.

To ride your own bike in Thailand you will need a temporary import, Thai motorcycle insurance, International Driver’s Permit, driver’s licence, passport and visa. 

To ride a rental motorcycle in Thailand you will need all of the above apart from the temporary import. Make sure you get additional motorcycle insurance to cover your motorcycle in case of damage as well as third-party insurance and also personal travel insurance from your home country. Accommodation on the Mae Hong Son Loop

There are some fantastic hotels, guesthouses and places to stay along the loop. The easiest way to find hotels for motorcycle travellers is to use the iOverlander app and Google Maps. 

However, if you are going during peak season, we definitely recommend using Booking.com to find cheap options and book them the night before.  

• Be careful on Thai roads. There are plenty of blind bends and, Thai drivers are fast, often erratic and cut corners into the oncoming lane.
• Carry waterproofs if you’re riding in monsoon season. The rain is torrential!
• You don’t need to book accommodation in advance, but bear in mind that it can get busy in the hotter months.
• Carry your International Driver’s Permit and Thai motorcycle insurance at all times
• Get a Thai SIM card in your phone just in case of emergencies.

Did you encounter any problems on the roads during your trip? Are there any nuances that I should pay attention to?

Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, I’d agree with them, I’ve heard many times that Thailand has an extremely high fatality rate for motorcyclists. We encountered lots of bad riders and drivers. Standard safety riding advice for travelling abroad applies, such as not riding at night, keeping an eye on your speed, being watchful of blind corners, be vary wary of other road users, expect that wildlife can cross the road at any second, keep good breaking distances, wear full gear all the time etc. Unfortunately, I can’t advise you on whether or not you should do the trip because it is at your risk. It’s completely your decision if you are going to ride there and what you feel comfortable with.

Hi Andy, I’ve just had a thought… I assume you’re planning on renting a motorcycle? If you’re concerned about riding conditions and safety, perhaps an idea might be to join an organised tour? You’d then be with professionals who know the route, roads and environment. Of course, this is still at your risk and completely up to you. But it may be worth looking into. Hello! A few friends and I are very interested in doing the loop. I’m the only one with any experience with motorcycles so I think the small scooters would be the best bet for the rest of the group. Can you give me a little bit of information on how you packed for this loop? We are all carrying larger backpacks to travel with full time, but not sure that riding with a 65L would be the best option. Second, I know that you said there’s no need to book accommodation in advance, can you elaborate on that? Where did you stay? What was the cost when doing so? Thank you for such a well thought out post about this, I look forward to hearing back from you!

Hi Parker, thanks for your comment. First off, it’s awesome that you’re considering doing the loop, it’s one of the best road rides in Southeast Asia. However, bear in mind, Thailand isn’t a safe country for motorcycle riding and riding in a group has its own challenges, especially if you’re adding inexperienced riders into the mix. So it may be worth getting some practise in beforehand if possible. Okay, back to your questions…

Packing – this is a tricky one to answer. My wife and I are on a round the world trip and rode to Thailand from the UK, so we didn’t pack for the loop as such because we have all of our stuff on the bike all the time. So we have camping gear, pots and pans, winter clothing, everything. However, if I was just flying into Thailand and doing that loop and would start and finish at the same hotel, which is what i’m assuming you’re going to be doing, then i’d take a tiny wash kit, flip flops, trainers, a few change of clothes, cheap throwover waterproofs (separate jacket and trousers), my own helmet and gloves and whatever electronics i’d need along with a couple of other small bits and bobs like sunglasses etc. This would all probably live in a 10L rucksack or waterproof duffle that i’d strap to the back seat. Something like this 15L Lomo (that I recently took all of my gear in on a 2 week ride through northern Nepal) or this 20L Lomo . But you can find these types of bags all over the place. It is easier to have a rucksack for when you’re off the bike and if you want to walk about and not leave your gear on the bike, but then just make sure you have a waterproof throwover, again, you can just buy one of those in Chiang Mai.

A 65L rucksack would be rather large and you won’t need 3/4 of what’s in there. I would leave it at the place you’re staying or hiring the bikes from and put it all in a small rucksack that you buy from a local market. I would also advise using Rok Straps whether or not you are going to take the 65L or a rucksack, it’s so much safer and easier than using bungees.

Accommodation – Again, as we’re on a rtw trip, it gets super tiring looking for places to stay all the time and booking in advance, so we tend to just pull over in a small town and ask for a local guesthouse. Dependent on what time of year you’re going it might be busier up there, so to make life easier for yourself, just use booking.com. In the morning as you have your breakfast, think about how many miles you’ll do that day on Google Maps, then type where you think you’ll end up that evening into Booking.com and search for and book a hotel for that night. I wouldn’t book it all in advance, especially as your group is inexperienced, it’s going to be hard gauging how many miles you’ll cover in a day or when someone might want to stop. Book in the morning for that night. As for cost, I can’t remember exactly, it was two years ago we were riding through there so prices will have changed and it’s dependent on the time of year, i’d expect to pay 15-20 quid per night though absolute max for a room.

Hi Marshall, Thanks for your comment. You will find so many places to stay along the Mae Hong Son Loop. We rode it before Covid, so it’s hard to say if the places we stayed are still open today. So, just check out booking.com and see what’s available along your route. Maps.Me and Google Maps will also give you a pretty decent idea of places to stay. Hi, I just need to say thank you so much for your Google Maps link for this loop. I am half way through (added stop in Bak Rak Thai) and the ride from Chiang Mai to Pai was an absolute dream on top of the mountain and away from the bus route. The views on your left and right were just incredible.

When getting to Pai I couldn’t believe how many tourists / travellers were not wearing a helmet and can totally see why the fatality rate is so high. You have to respect the roads and expect a car cutting the corner on every bend.

What i did: Day 1: Chiang Mai to Pai – i set off at 11:30am and i do not recommend this late as there are so many opportunities to get off your bike and take in the beauty. I definitely wish i had more time.

Day 2 (current): Pai to Bak Rak Thai – stopped off at Nam Lod Cave and went on an hour tour of the caves for 600 baht (worth it) for a bit of exercise. Then took a detour to this cute little Chinese village on the border to Myanmar.

And yeah, you’re right on the tourists! It’s mad. A few months ago we were riding in Koh Samui, Thailand and the most dangerous thing about it were foreign tourists wobbling about and crashing into each other with no gear on. A lot of them don’t know how to ride and somehow manage to rent scooters. The amount of people with nasty gravel rash is crazy. So yeah, I agree – you have to respect the roads, watch out for other cars – and for tourists!

The Best Motorbike Trips from Chiang Mai: Top 10 Routes

Chiang Mai is popular with travelers due to its fascinating culture, welcoming population, and beautiful setting in the mountains. This laid-back city in northern Thailand is a longtime backpacker favorite and was one of the original digital nomad hotspots. For those staying medium- to long-term, exploring some of the gorgeous motorbike trips from Chiang Mai is a must-do.

There are countless beautiful landscapes, temples, waterfalls, and small towns to explore in northern Thailand. Whether you’re looking to escape the city for a day, weekend, or longer, you’ll have plenty of incredible options. 

Buying or renting a motorbike in Chiang Mai

You’ll see motorbike rental shops all over town, but be aware that some are more reputable than others. I recommend reading reviews online before renting, as some of these places have an unfortunate habit of scamming tourists.

Test drive your motorbike before signing any paperwork. You should also thoroughly document any scratches or dents on your bike before heading off. 

I also steer clear of any place that requires me to leave my passport with them.  

I have rented from Mango Bikes several times and had good experiences. They offer daily, weekly, and monthly rentals, and they require a reasonable cash deposit and a copy of your passport. 

Chloe Motorbike Rentals, Zippy Motorbike Rentals, and Vanessa’s Motorbike Hire also have good reputations. 

Since Chiang Mai is such a popular base for digital nomads , people leave and sell their motorbikes fairly frequently. I ended up buying a bike secondhand from someone on Facebook marketplace, and I was able to resell it when I left for the same price I paid (which was only about 300 USD). Although I had to spend a bit of money on maintenance and repairs throughout the year, it still saved me a significant amount of money compared with renting. (I also took comfort in knowing that if I drove it off a cliff, I’d only be out $300.)

Safety and preparation for your ride

Make sure you’re heading out with a full tank of gas and plenty of air in your tires. Check the weather and try to avoid steep, winding routes if there are downpours in the forecast. 

Also keep in mind that unless you’ve gone through the process of getting a Thai motorbike license, you are technically driving illegally. The rental shops absolutely do not care, but your travel insurance very well might. Check your policy to see if you’re covered in the event of an accident. You also may get stopped at one of the various police checkpoints around the city and “fined.”

Finally – do not rely on whatever beach bucket helmet comes with your scooter rental. Go to a store and shell out for a proper full-face helmet. Helmet Shop Chiang Mai on Sridonchai Road has a good reputation. Anyone who has spent time driving in Chiang Mai can tell you that accidents are common, and close calls even more so. 

I also usually drive in long pants and long sleeves. Plenty of people don’t, but we’ve all seen those backpackers wrapped up like mummies after taking a spill. (And everyone takes a spill at some point.) I’ve seen destroyed bikes and people lying on the highway who I think probably didn’t make it. 

I absolutely love the freedom and beauty of driving through the Thai countryside. You can’t beat it; it’s one of my favorite things on this Earth. But you really do have to be careful.

Best single-day motorbike trips from Chiang Mai

Whew! On to the fun part. There are incredible temples, waterfalls, and views within a few hours’ drive of Chiang Mai that can easily be done as day trips. 

Visit the Floating Pagodas in Lampang.

In my humble opinion, the most amazing single-day motorbike trip from Chiang Mai is the drive to Wat Chalermprakiat , also known as the Temple of the Floating Pagodas.

The drive itself takes you through beautiful mountain scenery with forest temples and a few gorgeous lookouts. Once you get into Lampang province, you’ll head past rice fields and through small towns.

The temple itself is located on the top of a limestone karst. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views are incredible and well worth the effort.

Explore a Royal Project farming community in Mon Cham.

Mon Cham is a hillside farming community that is part of the Thai Royal Project . There is a small restaurant on the mountain with panoramic views, and you can wander around the nearby vegetable gardens.

For me, though, the drive itself was the main attraction.

If you continue west along route 4051 from Mon Cham, you’ll find yourself meandering through small villages with beautiful views on a nice day. (Slow down, these really are tiny communities.)

I love to just keep driving and see what I find. Quiet temples, campgrounds, hot springs? In this particular case it was a road closure, but not before I got in a solid 30 minutes of winding through green farmland in the warm October sunshine.

Go for a swim at the gorgeous Mork Fa waterfall.

There is no shortage of beautiful waterfalls in Thailand, but Mork Fa is definitely one of the most picturesque.

It is located about an hour away from Chiang Mai on the road to Pai, which means it could easily be combined with one of the multiday trips listed below. 

Spend a day driving around the Samoeng loop.

Another awesome motorbike trip from Chiang Mai is the Samoeng loop, which takes you around the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and through the Mae Sa Valley. (The turnoff to Mon Cham is actually along this route, so you could easily add this to your trip.)

The drive itself takes about 3-4 hours, but you’ll likely want to make several stops along the way. You can visit the Mae Sa waterfall , which is actually a series of falls where it’s easy to find a quiet spot to yourself.

There are also several gorgeous lookouts with amazing views on clear days, and a few lovely spots for lunch amidst the rice fields. 

Best 2- to 3-day motorbike trips from Chiang Mai

With a little more time, spend a night or two in one of northern Thailand’s beautiful small towns.

Escape to Chiang Dao for the weekend.

Just a few hours north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao makes for a perfect overnight or weekend trip away. There are many unique and beautiful guesthouses at the foot of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, the third-highest mountain in Thailand. (You can climb this peak, and the views look incredible! Just note that you are required to hire a guide in advance.)

Although the drive north from Chiang Mai is not particularly scenic, the area around Chiang Dao is perfect for exploring. Check out the beautiful Chiang Dao temple, explore Chiang Dao cave, or just take a drive along route 3024 to take in the spectacular views.

Stay in a unique guesthouse near the Sticky Waterfalls.

The Bua Tong waterfalls (sticky waterfalls) get their name from the grippy limestone rock that allows visitors to easily climb up and down without slipping. The falls are great fun on a hot day (which is most days in Thailand). 

Many visitors come for a few hours and head back to Chiang Mai, and the Bua Tong falls are certainly close enough to be done as a day trip. But you’ve driven all the way here, and there are some very cool accommodation options nearby! You can reserve a cabin on the Mae Ngat Dam or stay in one of the amazing treehouses just 25 minutes from the falls. 

To add a day or two to your adventure, you could continue to Chiang Dao the following day. Take Route 1001 through Sri Lanna National Park, and then turn left (west) on the absolutely spectacular Route 1150. (This will be a lot slower than taking the 107, but far more pleasant.)

Embrace (or discover) your woo-woo side in Pai.

Pai is a few hours’ drive from Chiang Mai on a notoriously curvy road. If you don’t have the time or desire to drive the full Mae Hong Son Loop, Pai is a worthy destination in itself. It’s a great base from which to enjoy hot springs, waterfalls, and hikes in nature.

It also has an amazing variety of delicious food for such a small town! It’s certainly not the tranquil, bohemian haven it once was, and prices have risen accordingly. That said, vestiges of the off-the-beaten path, new-age scene remain. If you’re looking for a cacao ceremony, you’ll still be able to find one.

Manage your expectations, enjoy it for what it is, and enjoy the people-watching! 

Visit the famous temples of Chiang Rai.

Chiang Rai is a charming city about four hours northeast of Chiang Mai, near the borders of Laos and Myanmar. It makes for an excellent 2-3 day motorbike trip from Chiang Mai. If you’re going to drive yourself there, I highly recommend including Chiang Rai as part of the Mae Salong Loop outlined below. (The out-and-back route along Route 118 is not quite as scenic as the trip through Fang and Tha Ton, though still nice.)

Chiang Rai itself is quiet and laid-back. There are plenty of lovely coffee shops and restaurants to check out, and its main sights will keep you busy for at least a day or two. 

Chiang Rai’s most famous attractions include two incredible temples and a unique art museum. The museum, Baan Dam (or Black House), is actually a group of buildings designed by the famous Thai painter, sculptor, and architect Thawan Duchanee. In contrast to the rather dark nature of the art, the large grounds of the museum are quiet and peaceful. 

Wat Rong Suea Ten , also known as the Blue Temple, is located just north of the Kok River, not far from the town center. 

Wat Rong Khun , the famous White Temple, is located south of Chiang Rai on the route back to Chiang Mai. 

Best 4- to 5-day motorbike trips from Chiang Mai

If you have a bit more time on your hands and want to really experience the rural beauty of northern Thailand, there are a number of longer trips to choose from. The two best motorbike loops from Chiang Mai are the Mae Salong loop and the Mae Hong Son loop.

Drive through incredible scenery on the Mae Salong loop.

This is my absolute favorite motorbike route through northern Thailand. The loop takes you through incredible mountain scenery, tea plantations, rice fields, and vegetable farms. You have the opportunity to visit gorgeous temples in Tha Ton and Chiang Rai, and you’ll get to experience a bit of Chinese culture in Mae Salong.

Explore the Mae Hong Son loop, the most famous motorbike trip from Chiang Mai.

The Mae Hong Son loop is a classic northern Thailand motorbike trip, and for good reason. The route takes you southwest from Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang, north to Mae Hong Son, east to Pai, and then back to Chiang Mai.

The scenery is spectacular, and there are plenty of interesting side trips to take along the way. It can be done in four days, but I would recommend stretching it out a bit longer if you have the time!

I don’t write posts about places I haven’t been, but here are a few more ideas to research if any of them call to you:

Doi Inthanon: The highest mountain in Thailand and a popular trip to do by motorbike (or car, or tour – it’s just popular in general). I honestly don’t know why I still haven’t been. Note that it’s a very steep climb.

Doi Ang Khang: This one looks especially beautiful in cherry blossom season.

Pu Chi Fa: A mountainous national forest area along the border with Laos.

We take you to the heart of these delightful Eastern cities where the rich culture and history is in abundance. Visit the beautiful Han Kumphawapi lake famed for the stunning Pink Lilies. Marvel at one of the most splendid ancient city ruins. Our fabulous selected route guides you through ancient weaving villages and alongside the Ubolratana Dam and through the heart of the amazing Khao Yai National Park. Allied with our carefully selected lunch stop venues and well-appointed relaxing hotels. This tour really showcases the splendour of the Eastern region and it will deliver on all your riding expectations. DAY 1: Pattaya to Nakhon Ratchasima 348km

Travelling up to Nakhon Ratchasima on the panoramic back roads passing lakes and glorious countryside. Great twisty winding roads are a key feature of this beautiful region. We guide you through some technical off-road sections here which present an opportunity to test your skills as we pass through rubber trees and wooded areas.

We will ride the curvy and serene lakeside road around the Khlong Si Yat reservoir with a scenic photo spot. There will be a nice lunch venue selected for you, called the “relax” for a well-earned break. Then we guide you to ride an amazing off-road track to the elevated wooded viewpoint to take in the striking views from this platform. Savouring all your experiences of this incredible day, we arrive at your selected comfortable hotel conveniently located close to restaurants and the Night Bazaar.

Nakhon Ratchasima is one of the major cities in the Isaan region and is locally known as Korat. It is also well renowned for its silk weaving, clay pottery and a variety of quality handicrafts. Situated close to Khao Yai National Park, it has an abundance of attractions and places of interest.

DAY 2: Nakhon Ratchasima to Khon Kaen 244km

After a nice evening rested we are back in the saddle and we’re on our way, stunning scenery awaits you as we ride today twisty route. Stepping back in time as we pass through traditional Thai villages with their charismatic charm.

We will have a pitstop to see the remains of the ancient city at the Phimai Historical Park. We will take you for a brief walk around the structures which have been beautifully preserved, it’s a fantastic photo opportunity.

We will then ride the flowing twisty route to the Chi River arriving at today’s lunch stop, the beautiful Naramit Na Café with fabulous garden views, bamboo walkway and Italian inspired ornate statues.

Continuing on we will arrive near the university city of Khon Kaen for our evening stopover and well-appointed hotel.

Khon Kaen is a vibrant and funky town that offers many restaurants, bars and cafes. There are two major rivers, the Pong and the Chi running through it. The ornate city park is a focal point with its beautiful relaxed atmosphere, a perfect location for a walk. Khon Kaen is one of the four major cities in the Isaan region and is famed for its high-quality silk production.

DAY 3: Khon Kaen to Udon Thani via the Sakon Nakhon loop – 348km

Today’s selected looping route takes you to the best spots of this region linked together for a spectacular ride including one of Thailand's best riders roads. We guide you through the Marahat Park, this is an excellent stop point for pictures of the beautiful landscape with its panoramic lake views and diverse wildlife.

You will travel over the 2km long elevated Thepsuda Bridge over the Lam Pao river below. This is the perfect time to take in the selected coffee stop break and capture those photo memories.

Now for a real motorcycle experience as you ride one of the most famous Thailand bikers dream roads, consistently voted as one of the best motorcycle roads anywhere in the world. With plenty of cliff top viewpoints, we ride the twisty free-flowing roads past the awe-inspiring Nam Phung lake.

After a relaxing lunch and refreshments, we continue this exciting loop ride.

However, before this most memorable day concludes, we visit the spectacular Nong Han Kumphawapi lake famed for the stunning Pink Lilies, also known as the Red Lotus Lake and treat ourselves to a photo opportunity in this most picturesque location.

We will arrive at our designated hotel situated in the thriving city of Udon Thani to relax and unwind for the evening after a.

The scenic twisty roads continue as this truly fantastic day’s riding concludes in the thriving city of Udon Thani. Time to relax and unwind for the evening.

Udon Thani is a modern, vibrant and cosmopolitan city with lots of amenities and interesting nightlife. This area is well known for breeding orchids and their scents are also used to make perfume. The city is situated amongst rice fields and forests and has a fabulous city park named Nong Prachak, which has a beautiful lake with a central garden of plants and a pathed walkway for exercising during the morning sunrise and evening sunset. It’s well worth a visit.

As always our selected hotel here is very chilled and close to all the restaurants, amenities and nightlife.

DAY 4: Udon Thani to Chaiyaphum – 258km

Day 5: chaiyaphum to pak chong 259km.

After a hearty breakfast, we depart and it’s not long before we’re back into the heavenly countryside and super flowing back roads of this region. We have skillfully linked together with another super scenic epic ride.

As we ride the trail around the beautiful Pasak River, our guides will point out the elevated Khoksalung railway bridge running over the lake. Its elegant design will impress. This tranquil location makes an excellent location for a riverside lunch stop.

We continue the ride passing temples and beautiful scenery into tonight’s hotel in Pak Chong, but not before we take you through a stunning tree tunnel avenue. It’s been another fantastic and memorable day's ride for sure.

Pak Chong is the most vibrant of towns in the heart of the expansive National Park region. The selected hotel is located on the edge of the National Park where you can soak away the journey and relax in the beautiful surroundings.

DAY 6: Pak Chong to Pattaya via Khao Yai National Park – 270km

This is the home leg of the tour and it’s simply stunning, it will blow you away and finish the tour in style. Khao Yai is one of the best and largest National Parks within Thailand. The road which runs through the centre is a magnet for motorcyclists who find the scenic tight fast curves a real challenge. There are also many excellent photo opportunities in the park and lakeside stop points. The fresher air and cooler temperatures make it a natural home for an abundance of impressive wildlife including elephants and monkeys and many bird species, which can be seen around this magical environment of over 2000 km².

The route is skillfully linked together to perfection, so you really experience the very best from your adventure tour as we meander south back towards home base.

We will then guide you through the renowned local bikers dream district of Bo Thong. Here are some of the best flowing sweeping bends locally to our Southeastern region. The limestone mountains are magnificent to ride alongside whilst taking in the splendour of these roads for a well-earned break, before arriving safely back at the Motorbike Madness HQ.

Our 10 day motorcycle tours in Northern Thailand allow you to fly in and decompress before joining us for a biking experience of a lifetime, then relax for a day in Chiang Mai before flying out. The tour is scheduled to start on a Monday and finish on a Wednesday, fitting in nicely with a two week holiday slot.

General Information About Our Motorbike Tours Across Northern Thailand

Please note, this tour can also be “cut in two”, with a three day trip encompassing the Mae Hong Son Loop and a seven day tour starting with a night in Sukhothai and continuing – price is 9,000 baht/day for riders and 2,000 baht/day for pillion.

This is a tour suitable for anyone with a reasonable amount of “big bike” experience and pillions are welcome. We don’t ride extremely fast and definitely not recklessly but you must be competent and comfortable with speeds averaging between 80 – 120kph and we’ll cover approximately 2,400km over the course of the 10 days.

How to visit Chiang Mai on a budget

Generations of backpackers will tell you that Thailand has long been a great destination for travelers on a shoestring. And it’s particularly easy to visit the northern city of  Chiang Mai on a budget, even with its swanky luxury scene and five-star hotels.

Perhaps it's the fact that the “Capital in the North” is surrounded by mountains and endless green forests – with no beaches for miles – that keeps accommodation costs down. But it’s not just hostels and hotels that are reasonably priced; there are loads of cheap things to do in Chiang Mai, from devouring delectable street food to indulging in muscle soothing massages. Here's how to stick to your budget in Chiang Mai.

• Hostel room: 200–400B
• Basic room for two: 400–800B
• Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): 1000B

• Coffee: 50B
• Khao soy noodles: 40–100B

1. Arrive by train

The Special Express train between Bangkok and Chiang Mai leaves three times a day in both directions and this scenic route costs just 840B one way, which is usually cheaper than flying. Whether you opt to take the daytime service and watch the towns and hills roll by from your window, or take the night train and sleep all the way there (saving on a night’s accommodation too), it’s a safe, spacious and relaxed way to travel.

2. Use Chiang Mai’s public transport

The main way to get around Chiang Mai cheaply is by flagging one of the red songthaew trucks, which are like large taxis that can fit up to eight people. They will take you to your chosen destination within the city for 40B a ride per person. To avoid any lost-in-translation moments, ask to be dropped at the temple nearest to your destination – these drivers know the temple locations like the back of their hands.

3. Get on your bike

This flat city is very easy to cycle around, so rent a bicycle to avoid taxi fares. It’s a great way to see the center and very cost effective too. Most hotels and hostels have bicycles for hire – some will even loan them to you for free – but, if not, get the Anywheel app . You can get a seven-day pass for 100B (or 50B for one day), which gives you get unlimited rides of up to 30 minutes.

4. Eat on the street

Chiang Mai is famous for its incredible street food and two destinations will see to it that you’re well fed for just a few dollars: Chang Phuak Gate Night Market on the northside of the old city moat, and Chiang Mai Gate market on the southside, just within the moat. Both markets have countless stalls every night, and it's easy to find skewers of meat, noodle soups, curries and more. Pull up a perch – there are usually some plastic chairs around to sit on – and enjoy.

5. Local beer is your friend

If you drink alcohol and plan to have a few beverages, don’t be caught out by Thailand’s 100% import duty. Drinking foreign spirits – ie your favorites from home – will cost around double what you’d expect to pay due to the taxes. Stick to local beers if you’re drinking; Chang, Leo and Singha are all tasty and refreshing and cost 40–70B (depending on the size) from shops, and around 100B in bars, depending on how fancy your bar of choice is.

6. Avoid the fines

If you prefer to rent a motorbike or moped (both are known locally as “motorcy”) then be sure to get an international motorbike license before your arrival in Thailand. If the traffic police find you driving without the correct license – a standard car license isn’t sufficient – you’ll incur a 500B fine. Your insurance also won’t cover any road accidents if you don’t have the correct license, so it pays to be prepared.

7. Be a smart shopper

Chiang Mai is full of vast night markets where you can buy food, clothes and souvenirs – one on Wua Lai St runs every Saturday and another on Rachadamnoen Rd is open every Sunday evening. The items for sale here may seem cheap but you'll find the same stuff at the university market (officially called Kad Na Mor Market) for half the price. It's on every night and sells clothes, bags and cute home decor pieces.

8. Find your zen

Chiang Mai is known for being a spiritual hub; people from across the country make pilgrimages to the city’s Buddhist temples and there are countless meditation and yoga retreats in the surrounding area. If your budget doesn’t extend to a retreat or to classes in one of the many great studios, you can attend the free outdoor yoga classes in  Suan Buak Hat park. Run by  Yoga in the Park Chiang Mai , the sessions take place daily, depending on the weather.

9. A hand from the temples 

Chiang Mai’s ancient and ornate Buddhist temples are much more than places to visit for prayers. Many temples, like Wat Phra Singh , have jay (vegetarian) restaurants attached or very nearby. Delicious vegetarian versions of local specialities are served here extremely cheaply – Buddhists don’t eat meat on their birthday or on the Buddha’s birthday. A few temples including Wat Samphao also have massage halls, which are not fancy but they're certainly the cheapest Thai massages in the city.

10. Dive into the music scene

There’s excellent live music across Chiang Mai most nights of the week, with local bars hosting musicians and running free gigs that play everything from jazz to folk to indie. The best spots to head to are North Gate Jazz Co-op , the city’s long-standing, much loved jazz venue; Thapae East , which showcases indie and blues acts and more; or Paapu House , a charming guest house with a large bar that hosts a top live-music programme. 

11. Aim for the rainy season

Visiting Chiang Mai during the rainy season (May to September) is a smart way to save money as many hotels and hostels offer cheaper rates at this “off-peak” time. The seasonal showers are certainly heavy but rarely last more than a couple of hours and are easy to dodge with the Rain Alarm app . The downpours also make the dense natural surroundings really pop with greens, so it’s a great time to visit the waterfalls and forested temples in and around the city.

12. Book your accommodations outside of the old city

Nothing is too far away in compact and densely populated Chiang Mai – the neighborhoods in the center are all adjoined and close to one another. The old city is fun but you’re more likely to find bargain rates on hostels and guesthouses outside of the moat. Staying in Wat Ket (over the river) or along Wua Lai St (south of the city center) can keep costs down, and it’s easy to walk, cycle or jump in a songthaew to reach the action.
