1. From Málaga: Caminito del Rey Guided Tour with Bus

Selfie of Cristina and partner in Caminito del Rey.

Duration: 6 hours | Languages: English and Spanish | Rating: 4.8 out of 5 |  Book it now

I don’t always book a tour when I travel to a new place, and the chances are even lower if I’m visiting somewhere near my hometown as I know the area very well.

However, I really wanted to discover the history behind this hiking trail which had been on my list for a while, so I booked this Caminito del Rey guided tour .

The meeting point is just outside Maria Zambrano (Malaga train station and shopping centre), and the organisation was good.

The coach driver took us safely close to the north entrance of Caminito del Rey, which can only be accessed on foot.

Once we arrived, our guide gave us the entry tickets, and El Caminito del Rey staff gave us a helmet with a shower cap for hygiene reasons. We were looking very attractive (not really! But safety first!)

Then we started the trail and made stops along the way to listen to our guide, who told us why Caminito del Rey was built in that area, why it was named after the King of Spain at that time, and the fauna and flora. He was very knowledgeable.

However, a downside is that we couldn’t always clearly hear our guide, and I wished we had audioguides.

The walk was incredible, and I was totally amazed by the landscape. Unfortunately, we didn’t see much wildlife besides a few vultures flying over.

Once we finished the walk, I thought that was the end, and we were going to head to our meeting point in the morning; however, the guide told us that they had recently added a stop in Álora, a nearby “ pueblo blanco ” whitewashed town.

We went to a restaurant where we were served tapas. It was a nice gesture, I always appreciate food, but being a Spaniard and from the area, I must say I was a bit disappointed with the food (especially the ensaladilla rusa!)

After our 1-hour lunch break, we returned to Malaga.

“We glad we booked this excursion. Caminito del Rey is an amazing and one of a kind place. Furthermore, Daphne our tour guide has been funny, extremely knowledgeable, caring and kind. Would recommend this tour to everyone. Shout out to the coach driver Mr. Andres for the safe and smooth ride back to Malaga. Muchas gracias :)” – Maria ( Read more reviews )

2. Costa del Sol: Caminito del Rey Guided Trip with Breakfast

A photo of a group of people doing the Caminito del Rey hiking trail.

Duration: 3-7 hours | Languages: English, French and Spanish | Rating: 4.5 out of 5 |  Book it now

All the Caminito del Rey tours start early in the morning, and if you love breakfast and can’t have it before your excursion (most breakfast places don’t open at 7 a.m.), why not book this tour that includes breakfast?

The first stop of your trip is breakfast. After breakfast, you’ll go to Caminito del Rey . Listen to the interesting stories behind this pathway, enjoy the breathtaking views and cross Desfiladero de los Gaitanes (the scariest part of the trail!)

Right after your walk, you’ll go to Ardales, a nearby whitewashed town where you’ll have one hour to explore on your own.

Finally, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel.

“We enjoyed our trip so much. Our guide was superb, so informative and friendly. Fluent in several languages. The pictures do not begin to showcase this incredible walk. We highly recommend this tour to anyone thinking about going. Deborah Henry, with 3 friends.” – Deborah ( Read more reviews )

3. El Chorro: Caminito del Rey Guided Tour with Shuttle Bus

A photo of Caminito del Rey hike in Alora, Malaga, Spain.

Duration: 4 hours | Languages: English and Spanish | Rating: 4.7 out of 5 |  Book it now

Whether you’re travelling to Caminito del Rey by car or train, this guided tour with a shuttle bus is a good option.

If you travel by train, the guide will wait for you in case it arrives a bit late, so you don’t need to panic about missing the tour.

Once you meet your local guide, you’ll take the shuttle bus and walk to the north entrance of Caminito del Rey.

During this breathtaking 8-kilometre hiking trail, you’ll hear all about the history, flora and fauna whilst admiring the canyons and surroundings.

“Sergio (the guide) was truly a delight! He was informative, humorous, knowledgeable and absolutely was the “icing on the cake “ during this hike. My friends and myself felt such a sense of accomplishment and gained an insight into the incredible hard work and effort achieved by the sailors that created this dam. The views were breathtaking and it felt truly invigorating to complete it. The walkway felt safe and sturdy and none of our group had any negative thoughts during the hike. PLEASE don’t miss out on it … definitely one to tick off the “life list “ (not bucket) 😍” – Midge ( Read more reviews )

“Everything was fantastic. The organization of the whole day is taken care of. You can see beautiful things outside of Malaga, learn about the culture and have a great meal with local products. The guide will tell you a lot about the area, make pictures of you want and take care of everything. It is worth every cent.” – Lidia ( Read more reviews )

5. Caminito del Rey Private Tour from Costa del Sol

Caminito del Rey old pathway.

Duration: 5-6 hours | Languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Czech and Slovak | Rating: 5 out of 5 |  Book it now

Who doesn’t like a private tour? I don’t book private tours all the time, but I sometimes do, and it makes a big difference because I’m usually introverted and wouldn’t like to ask questions in front of 28 people, and I feel like I get to know the guide a bit more, which is nice.

This Caminito del Rey trip has all the perks for anyone who loves private experiences. You get picked up and dropped off at your hotel, do the tour at your own pace and have more opportunities to ask questions.

“Fantastic excursion that went beyond our expectations … shame to miss it because it is something unique” – Get Your Guide Traveller ( Read more reviews )

“Caminito del Rey was a good experience for me and my family. We paid to have the 2 hour guided tour and we enjoyed the walk through the mountain ravine and all the guide stories of how the pathway was built in 1904. It would be good to have a better microphone system for visitors since our guide was excellent but it was not easy to hear some of the details because the microphone was not great quality. However we got most of it so we appreciate the information.” – Get Your Guide Traveller ( Read more reviews )

Caminito Del Rey Tour

Caminito Del Rey Tour

About caminito del ray.

El Caminito Del Rey or “The King’s Little Path” is a path which is pinned along the steep walls of a very narrow gorge in El Chorro near Ardales in Malaga, Spain. With a length of around 8 kms and width of 3 ft, this walkway is at a height of 330 ft above the river below it and was considered as one of the most dangerous paths in the whole world. The construction of the path began in 1901 and it was inaugurated in 1921 by King Alfonso XIII. Over the years, the walkway deteriorated and there were places where the concrete top had come off and even collapsed, leaving behind holes and large open air gaps. Several people lost their lives in fatal accidents that had occurred in the walkway after which the local Government closed the path. It stayed closed until in June 2011, the regional and local Government agreed to restore Caminito Del Rey.

In 2015, after many years of restoration work on the walkway, Caminito Del Rey was again reopened for visitors. Several scenes from popular movies including Scent of Mystery, The End and Von Ryan’s have been shot here. • Tickets to Caminito del Rey included in the price

4. Book Tour with Best Reviews

One of the benefits of booking this tour online instead of a booth or reception of your hotel is the fact that you can check the reviews of the trip you want to take.

The company I recommend has over 1700 positive reviews for this trip, which include these ones:

‘The coach journey was efficient, we were the first to be picked up so we had many pickups during the next hour before starting our journey. The first stop on the outward journey was at Ardales for a welcome break and bite to eat. Caminito del Rey Guided Tour was an unforgettable experience. The group on the walk was large with many stopping on the narrow walkways taking pictures. To keep up and listen to the guide we needed to be with this group. If we did it again we would hold back from the main group so that we had our own space and could take in all the amazing views without stopping and bumping into people. Overall an amazing day.’
‘The day trip was really a unique experience! Just walk in between the rocks and looking at nature was breath taking. Do bring some water and a snack with you. The walk itself lasts for 2hrs approximately. I’d recommend this activity to all nature lovers who are not too afraid of the heights :)’

5. Have a Backup Option

Is it sold out?

As I mentioned this day tour to Caminito del Rey from Torremolinos is very popular. If you leave it till the last minute, you might not see any available dates or tickets for your visit.

In that case, here are a few options to consider:

  • USING OTHER TOUR OPERATOR – for this day trip, you can check this option and also this one , which also have pick up locations in Torremolinos.
  • DRIVE WITH RENTAL CAR – if none of those options is available, your best bet is to get to Caminito del Rey with a rental car. I have described the exact instructions in this post . You can get your tickets with a guide in advance here .

6. Read the Small Print

The tour I recommend does NOT include hotel pick-up , but the bus will pick you up from a meeting point in central Torremolinos. They will also drop you off at the end of the tour.

This tour does not include free time on the trail , only a break in the town of Ardales ahead of the trail.

Due to bad weather, access to Caminito del Rey may not be allowed – read the cancellation instructions in your confirmation email.

Introducing Your Tour: What to Expect

The tour I recommended earlier has a number of pick-up stops in Costa del Sol, including two in Torremolinos, and the last pick-up location in Malaga.

After you leave Malaga, the airconditioned bus will take you to the Northern access to Caminito del Rey. Before you reach the access point, you will make a short stop in the village of Ardales for some snack and fresh air.

From the access point you will walk through a short tunnel with your guide until you reach the entrance point.

At the entrance, you will get a short safety briefing , pick up your helmets and follow your guide to the start of the trail. You will also have a chance to use the toilets by the entrance, or buy some water from the vending machines.

On your way, enjoy breathtaking views , take photos, learn about the history of the trail, enjoy views of the Conde de Guadalhorce Dam, Chorro Reservoirs and stroll through the famous wooden boardwalks. The trail has an elevation between 300 to 400 meters above sea level, so amazing views are guaranteed (check out the photos below!)

As you walk, you might spot griffon vultures cruising over your head and a train passing by from the el Chorro railway station. The last part of the trail is a section with a suspension bridge – check my recommendations below if you have a fear of heights.

After the suspension bridge, you will encounter the only uphill climb up the stairs, which shouldn’t be too demanding for most people.

At the end of the trail, you will hand over the safety helmets and any audio equipment to the staff. You can enjoy a cold drink from one of the stalls by the exit, or use the public toilets next to the exit.

The bus will then take you back to your drop off point in Torremolinos.

Expert Tips for Visiting Caminito Del Rey [2024]

Now you got your tour booked, what should you bring with you? How should you prepare and what to do to make the most out of your trip?

This section will answer all your questions.

What to Bring With You

If you’re ready to book your trip, there are just a few things you need to have with you:

  • your booking confirmation
  • water bottle
  • comfortable shoes (no flip-flops or open-toe shoes)
  • comfortable clothing
  • camera or mobile phone for photos
  • sun lotion & sunglasses
  • safety helmets will be provided to you by the entrance

caminito del rey tour from torremolinos

Safety Instructions

It’s super important to follow the safety instructions which will be provided to you at the start of the trail. These include:

  • Stay on the path
  • Children under the age of 8 are not allowed
  • Do not throw any objects from the path
  • Do not touch, pick or destroy any plants
  • Smoking is forbidden
  • For safety reasons, selfie sticks, umbrellas and sharp objects are not allowed
  • No big backpacks are allowed (backpacking size), small standard size are fine

Starting Point

At the entrance of the Caminito del Rey, you will see a small booth where they store safety helmets .

Right next to it are toilets , I recommend using them before you set on the trail.

Next to the toilets, you will also find vending machines, in case you need to buy more water.

After safety instructions , you can set off following your guide. The whole path will take about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to walk, depending on the speed of your group.

Fear of Heights

If you have a fear of heights or don’t like high altitudes, and you think you might struggle with this tour, the good news is – it’s quite unlikely (although not impossible!).

I also have a fear of heights, and there were only a few spots on the pathway that made me feel a little uneasy, otherwise, I was surprised it was actually very manageable .

The hardest part is possibly crossing the suspension bridge which you will encounter closer to the end of the trail. The bridge is not that long, and there is a member of staff available in case you need help crossing it!

Weather Conditions

Tour of el caminito del rey (king’s little pathway) is subject to good weather conditions, for obvious reasons.

In case of bad weather, they will notify everyone with tickets for the day that the trip is cancelled. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do in that case is to get a new entrance ticket, or book a new tour.

End of the Walk

After crossing the suspension bridge, you will get to the last part of the trail which is the only section with a steep climb on stairs, so pace yourself for that one.

Following that last section, you will reach the end fo the walk and then continue on foot until you reach the exit point.

You will get to the control cabin where you deposit the safety helmets. A short walk from there you will see the exit, where you will find a few stalls selling local products, like local wine, magnets, drinks and quick snacks.

Caminito del Rey - self guided tour

Updated: Jan 18

Do I need a guide to visit Caminito del Rey? You can do it yourself, with a little planning and insider tips! Here is our guide for your self-guided day at Caminito del Rey.

And what a great day out! Follow our insider tips to have a perfect day on the Caminito del Rey trail, one of the most sought after attractions in Andalucia.

Caminito del Rey is a spectacular walking path in Malaga province, Andalucia. The scenery is spectacular and the hike is truly unique. One of the best things about it is the complete change of scenery from the coast. If you are staying with us in Marbella, this is a fantastic day out in the mountains, lakes and country; If you book a morning time-slot for your hike, you can be back for Paella on the beach by 3pm!

my top tour caminito del rey

Should you take a guided tour or go it on your own? It all depends how much time and patience you have to organize your trip, and if you thought to buy entry tickets in advance. There are many tour guides that offer guided tours with or without transportation out to the El Chorro area. If you are here for a short stay and don't speak Spanish, or if you didn't buy tickets ahead, it might be worth it to book one of these tours. Look on Tripadvisor and Airbnb Experiences; and make sure the transportation out to El Chorro is included (meeting point in Malaga or Marbella) or does the guide just meet you at the trailhead. Finding the trail head and being on time are the challenges here, so if you want an easy day make sure this transportation is included in your package. If the guide is meeting you at the entry to the trail, you will have to do a lot of the below organizing yourself and you should not pay more than 60 euros for your group for the guided tour - official tour guides are on hand for a fraction of the price. Below we'll go a bit further into detail about how you can do a self guided day at the Caminito. You can purchase entries online for 10 euros each, that's all you need. Read further or contact us through our website we'll be glad to provide custom tips!

my top tour caminito del rey

A bit of History

The trail was developed as a way to connect the Malaga coast to Seville, in 1901. The rugged cliffs along the Guadalhorce river, with 300 meter high canyons and passages sometimes as narrow as 10 meters wide, made for difficult transportation before the railway installed their tracks. You can still see the train from Seville passing through the gorge, as you walk the boardwalks, today.

lakes where you can hire kayaks and swim from beaches in el chorro malaga

After building the railway, a dam was built in 1913 which created the system of lakes (called "embalses" in Spanish) that you can still see today. These lakes have beautiful turquoise water and the shores are dotted with campsites that rent kayaks for the day, if hiking on the vertiginous caminito is not your cup of tea!

The hydroelectric plant is an important source of power for the Malaga area, and the town of El Chorro is deeply linked to the maintenance of this power plant and the building and maintenance of the railway. It's hard to imagine the school children that had to use boats along this dangerous irrigation trail, high up on the canyon walls, to get to school every day!

What to expect

my top tour caminito del rey

The Caminito is a one-way trail along the canyons - the starting point is the Kiosko restaurant (in Ardales). From there, you hike all the way to to El Chorro train station station through the canyons. So you have to take a bus or get a lift one direction, either to the trail before your hike, or back to your car after your hike. The hike is a gentle one, no technical difficulty, accessible to anyone who can walk 8km on uneven surfaces (no climbing involved). It can be very hot, bring water! And the uphill bits are at the very end so take some snacks and preserve your energy. You can take as long as you want and stop along the way, if you are not in a guided tour. The bus stop is clear and easy but the buses only run every half hour (we did this during travel restrictions in April 2021).

my top tour caminito del rey

The area is beautiful in itself, there are plenty of other hiking trails around and you can spend a day here without doing the Caminito. You can swim in the lakes, rent a kayak in the camping grounds (some open only in the afternoon), or just drive around and look at the splendid scenery. You can book directly through the Caminito website : either a guided tour for 18 euros or a time-slot for walking yourself for 10 euros. Then just make your way to the entry point to get a hardhat and you're off! The trail is about 1/3 boardwalks hanging suspended along the cliff, and 2/3 walking along broad and scenic paths.

walkie talkie for caminito del rey

If you book the official guided tour 18 euros per person, you will receive a different color hat that distinguishes your group from the general public, and your tour guide will want to keep track of you. So you will have to keep up with the group. You will receive a headphone that works on a walkie-talkie so the guide can explain things to the whole group while on the narrow trails.

It takes about 2 hours to hike from the entry where you get your hardhats, back to El Chorro station where you left your car or get the bus. There are no toilets during the trail, and lots of people around so hard to find "private" space - make sure you use the servicios at the entry gate. Also no food or drink provided so bring your own. You can stop and picknick in many places along the trail. You don't have to complete the walk within any given time frame. You are not allowed to use selfie sticks or do anything that impedes the passage on the narrow bits of the path. The boardwalks are narrow and very high up if you suffer from vertigo this might not be for you.

Practical tips

A self-guided day at caminito del rey is possible, if you have a car and some time to plan your day to make sure it goes smoothly., (1) buying your tickets.

You can buy tickets yourself on the official Caminito website. We recommend taking booking your entry from 10:00 to 11:00 am, to be sure that (1) you will arrive in the parking lot before the crowds and (2) you will be able to take the first bus in time to the head of the trail.

There are 2 ways to do the Camino: either take the shuttle bus before your hike or after it. We preferred to arrive early and park at the south access to the trail ("acceso sur"), which is the ending of the trail. This means, you must arrive early and park here, and take the first morning shuttle bus to the head of the trail, so that you will be directly back at our car at the end of the walk. If you did not leave enough time, you can always park at the beginning of the trail (parking lot north, near El Kiosko restaurant) , but you will have to queue and wait for the shuttle bus to take you back to your car after the hike.

(2) Leave Elviria +- 3 hours before your entry time, park at the south access point at least 75 minutes before your scheduled entry time.

driving from Marbella to Caminito del Rey in Ardales malaga

Timeline for a successful self guided day:

=> Drive 80 minutes from Elviria to El Chorro

=> Park in the South Access zone => Take the Lanzadera shuttle bus 34 minute drive

=> Walk through the tunnel to the trail head "meeting point" 20 minute (1,5 km) walk

The southern access point is in the village called El Chorro, on the edge of the lake near the hydro electric station and the Garganta restaurant and hotel.

park near the el chorro train station or garganta restaurant

The Southern Access point is next to the El Chorro train station where there is a nice little bar with a terrace and the Garganta hotel & restaurant , you can

put either in your gps. There is a free parking area is near the Garganta hotel and restaurant . We did this early, off season, during Covid, and there was no problem finding a parking space at 8:00 am! When the tourists come back, you might want to try to be on the first bus and get there quite early to be sure to find a space. You can have a coffee or breakfast at the train station café which directly overlooks the shuttle bus stop to the head of the trail. It is very pleasant to have a drink or a meal on the gorgeous sunny terrace of the Garganta restaurant, after you've finished your hike and before starting the drive home.

(3) Take the Lanzadera bus to El Kiosko (northern access point)

The bus stop which is just in front of the El Chorro train station and Garganta restaurant. The bus is called the "Lanzadera" and the first one runs at 8:30 or 9:00. When purchasing your ticket for the Caminito, be sure to leave at least an hour from the first bus departure time, to take the bus (every 30 minutes, 30 minutes ride) and walk to the beginning of the trail (30 minutes)

northerrn parking zone next to El kiosko restaurant and tunnel for the beginning of the trail

Don't worry about knowing where to get off, the bus is dedicated to people hiking the trail like you so everyone gets off at the same spot! Get off the bus at the Kiosko restaurant , and find the tunnel passage that will take you to the path to the start of the trail. You'll see lots of other people heading the same way. If you have more than 30 minutes until your ticket time, you might want to have a delicious hearty breakfast at El Kiosko overlooking the blue lake and beach, where you can also have a swim if you want to come back another time!

You can also just drive out to El Kiosko for lunch and a swim, bring beach shoes, towels, maybe a floaty toy or raft... a change of clothes so you can have lunch afterwards on the beautiful lake view terrace.

my top tour caminito del rey

(4) Find the tunnel to the trail head

With your back to El Kiosko, facing the lake, walk to the left (south) until you find the tunnel that will take you to the path to the head of the trail.

This path is a 2,7 km walk and you will then arrive at the entry point, where you will receive your hard hat and the guides check ticket times and let people into the trail at their allotted time.

my top tour caminito del rey

If you booked a guided tour on the official "caminito" website, this is where you will meet your guide. There are some toilets here and machines where you can buy water if you forgot.

(5) Enjoy the trail at your own pace!

If you booked a guided tour you will have to stay with the group; if you booked a simple entry ticket you can explore the trails at your own pace! Bring water and a snack, but no selfie sticks or large cumbersome bags etc. They are very attentive about not having people block the narrow trails. Yellow/orange markers along the trail indicate places where you should keep moving, do not stop up traffic. The official "Caminito" website has a detailed description (in Spanish but sadly not in English) and photos of everything you will see along your way, click here.

my top tour caminito del rey

(6) Arrive in El Chorro village next to your car

If you followed our instructions and parked at the southern access, you will wind up next to your car at the end of the walk. The last part is the breathtaking suspension bridge (pictured above) ; then you climb down a long staircase to get out of the canyon and the last part of the hike is a rather steep incline up into El Chorro village and the Garganta restaurant, where it is very pleasant to sit and have lunch or a soft drink before taking the road back to Marbella

Depending on how long you spent on the trail, you can easily be back at our apartment for a swim in the sea or the pool, drinks on the terrace and paella dinner on the beach!

This is just one of the fabulous self guided driving tours we can help you organize, when you stay with us as your home base for your Andalusia adventure. Come to the Costa del Sol, it's so much more than just the beach!
