10 Great Things to do in Narva, Estonia

This post is about the best things to do in Narva, Estonia . Narva is the third biggest city in Estonia after Tallinn and Tartu . It is in the Idu Viru county at the most eastern point of the country. Right at the border with Russia, the city has a very different atmosphere from others in the country.

Things to do in Narva

Why visit Narva?

Narva is and has always been a frontier town. The iconic Narva river is now the official border between the European Union with Russia. Already in the Middle ages the river separated Catholic Europe in the West from the Orthodox Slavs in the East.

As a result there are two competing castles opposite each other. Narva castle in Estonia and the Ivangorod castle in Russia on the other side.  Saint Petersburg is less than 4 hours away from Narva

However, the river is not the strict division line it might look like. Narva feels very different from the other cities in Estonia. Russians who are an ethnic minority elsewhere in Estonia, still form a majority in Narva. Soviet architecture that is quickly disappearing in the rest of the country still dominates the urban landscape here.

Narva was completely demolished in WW2. The Soviets eventually rebuilt the city and even renovated the medieval Narva castle. To be honest, there are not that many things to do in Narva, besides the impressive castle.

Most people visit on a day trip from Tallinn. But, with my interest in Soviet history, I decided to spend a bit more time in Narva.

Things to do in Narva

I stayed two days in Narva. One of the reasons to stay that long in Narva is also because I visited in winter and days were short. This way I could enjoy all the things to do in Narva on a leisurely pace and get a good feel for the city.

Narva castle

The main attraction in Narva is the Narva castle. It is one of the largest and most beautiful castles in Estonia.

The Danes first built a wooden military fort in 1256. Then the German Livonian Order and the Teutonic knights bought it in the 14th century. They built a strong stone castle known as the Hermann castle.

The Hermann Castle certainly made the RUssians a bit nervous and in 1492 Ivan the third built his own castle on the other side of the river as a response. In turn, the Livonians added a large tower on top of the Hermann castle so they could see what was happening inside the Ivangorod castle.

The castle sustained severe damage in WW2, but was renovated during Soviet rule and is now a museum.

Narva museum

The Narva castle is now home to the Narva museum . Entrance allows you entry into the castle grounds and the tower for beautiful views over Narva and Russia.

The museum itself was nice and tells you about the history of the castle. There are also some old pictures of how Narva looked before WW2.

Things to do in Narva

Narva Friendship bridge

The friendship bridge between Narva and Ivangorod forms the actual border and is heavily protected by fenced gates from both sides. The bridge is 162 meters long and to cross it you need the right paperwork.

Lenin statue

Almost hidden in the outer courtyard of the palace is the only statue of Lenin that still stands in Estonia. It’s a standard statue with Lenin pointing in front of him. In this case in the direction of Russia

Narva River promenade

The 1 kilometer long Narva river promenade makes for a nice morning or afternoon stroll in any season.

You have nice views into Russia. I could see an old lady feeding the ducks and Russian ice fishers fishing on the frozen parts of the river.

The promenade is the result of funding for an EU cross border project. Ivangorod also had funds to make a beautiful promenade, but theirs is only 120 meters long.

Narva Promenade

Victoria bastions

Narva’s city wall and bastions were designed by military architect Erik Dahlberg. Narva had 7 bastions in total.

The Victoria bastion was recently renovated and is now a museum. You can visit the underground storage for gunpowder and the guided tours tell more about the 300 year old history.

WW2 memorial

At the end of the River promenade is a small park with a memorial to remember the Soviet soldiers that died in the battle of Narva in 1944.

Raekoja plats

Narva’s Raekoja plats is all that is left of Narva’s old town. The renovated Town hall is Narva’s oldest building.

Right next to it is the Narva college of Tartu university. A modern design that is supposed to combine Narva’s present and past. Personally, I thought it was a bit out of place and overshadowed the beauty of the ancient town hall.

Raekoja plats Narva

Soviet architecture

Besides Raekoja plats, Narva is still mostly a standard Soviet city where the communal Khrushchyovka apartments line almost every street. They were built in the early 60’s to house Soviet workers.

The uniform blocks of concrete look drab and dilapidated from the outside. Small as they are, it is always a surprise what you will find inside. We actually stayed the night in a khrushchyovka that we booked on booking.com.

The concrete stairway hall was crumbling down. Pipes and wires that seemed to go nowhere. But once we opened the door we found a modern apartment with beautiful minimalistic Japanese design.

Although you can still find Khrushchyovka blocks in any Estonian city, Narva is really one of the best cities to see them.

Narva’s churches

Narva has two churches. The Cathedral of the Resurrection is Narva’s orthodox church. Built in 1890 it is one if the few buildings that survived Soviet bombings in WW2.

The Alexander cathedral is a Lutheran church that was built in 1884. The bell tower was destroyed in 1944, but is now restored.

Narva Travel Tips

Where to eat in narva.

Rondeel Restorant : Cafe Rondeel is without doubt one of the best places to eat in Narva. It is a bit upmarket and serves things like duck breast and deer ravioli. I tried both and I thought it was really delicious.

Viva cafe : Viva café is a more budget place to eat in Narva. For its basic cafe set up it serves pretty good food. I can recommend the shashlik.

Narva in winter

Where to sleep in Narva

A-studio : I stayed at A-studio. A very small appartmemt that had everything I needed. It is not far from the castle and very budget friendly.

Tallinn : If you visit Narva on a day trip from Tallinn I recommend Hestia hotel Il Marine . A good hotel within walking distance from the Old Town.

How to get to Narva

There are frequent trains and buses from Tallinn to Narva.

You can check the bus times on T pillet . I would recommend Lux express . Lux express has very comfortable buses that I used on a number of occasions in Estonia. For example to get from Narva to Tartu

To get to Narva I actually took the train. Trains are very modern too and it was a comfortable 3 hour journey. You can check the timetable and book tickets at Elron .

Narva train station

How to get around Narva

Although it is Estonia’s third biggest city, the major sights are all within walking distance. The best way to get around Narva is on foot.

Safety in Narva

Due to its proximity to Russia some people asked me whether it was safe to visit Narva. Obviously the war in Ukraine had a big impact on Narva, but everywhere I went, it felt safe. I am sure people had their opinions, but they also seemed more concerned about other topics, such as inflation.

Narva is in general a safe city and if you follow normal precautions, it is unlikely you will encounter any problems as a tourist. Theft and robberies do happen, as in most cities, and are especially common at night

When to visit Narva

Narva experiences a Northern European climate with distinct seasons. The best time to visit Narva depends on your preferences for weather and activities.

Summer is the peak tourist season in Narva. During these months, the weather is typically warm, and you can enjoy longer daylight hours. Unfortunately this also means that Narva is more crowded and prices for accomodation higher.

Spring and Autumn are more quiet times to visit Narva. Temperatures are still mild and pleasant enough to explore the city.

Winter can be quite cold in Narva, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. As you can see from my pictures, I did visit in winter. In my opinion, the snow makes the town even more beautiful.

Sustainable Travel in Narva

Narva sees more tourists every year. While Tourism is a welcome source of income it can also have negative consequences. Traveling sustainably in Narva, involves conscious choices that minimize your environmental impact and support the local community.

Support the community : You can support the community by purchasing goods and services from local markets and restaurants. It is better to try Baltic cuisine that uses local ingredients rather than imported foreign foods.

Stay in small scale sustainable hotels : It is also better to stay in small-scale guesthouses or homestays to support the local economy directly. These accommodations often have a more positive impact on the environment compared to large hotels. You can also look for hotels that prioritizes sustainable practices.

Use public transport : Narva has a well-developed public transportation system. Opt for public transport, whenever possible, instead of taxis or private cars to reduce carbon emissions. Even better is exploring the city by foot.

narva tours

Kert is a wonderful guide with enormous knowledge, who is individually setting places to see, he listens to guest’s interests. He is also a good driver and protective host- everyone is feeling safe during the trip. He’s English is excellent. Highly reccomand!

"Amazing Eastern Estonia / Narva Tour"

Sten was amazing on our private tour. He is so full of knowledge and provided an in-depth history of Estonia and the roles Germany and the Soviet Union and Russia played along the way to Narva. Even in winter, the tour was well worth it.

" worthwhile historical and scenic tour"

Wonderful guide extremely competent ( a history professor!), and a tour bringing some nice touristic sights, but most of its interest comes from the way it makes you understand the reality of Estonia. today, between Baltic states common history and Russian influence

"Amazing tour with an amazing guide"

What an interesting day in Eastern Estonia visiting the part of Estonia, we had never been before. 12 hour tour was really worth experiencing: oil shales, secret city, ghost town etc. Our guide Sten was awesome, we were impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm. We highly recommend this tour, and you'll be so lucky, if it is guided by Sten.

"Sten was the best guide one could hope for! "

I absolutely loved it, the whole tour was quite striking and breathtaking. I got some amazing photos out of it too and the tour guide was incredible! Thank you :)

"Nice guide nice tour"

Both beauty in architecture and some 'sadness' in environmental destruction to experience.

"Off the tourist trail to Eastern Estonia"

Really enjoyed this off-the-beaten-track tour of eastern Estonia. You really get to see a very different side of the country - a lot of which looks and feels like it is still in the Soviet times. Narva was particularly interesting being so close to Russia, but there are many things to see and we highly appreciate that we were able to tailor our tour as desired. Would highly recommend to others that like a more quirky and unusual experience. Our guide Sten was very good - you could ask him anything and he would know the answer!

"An interesting tour with history rearing spoken off"

I enjoyed the discovers made during the tour. It was interesting to hear about the Soviet empire that we rarely are taught about in the UK. Sten was very informative and knowledgeable about the history. I enjoyed the food from the restaurant too, tasted good and was very filling! You'll enjoy the tour. My highlights were visiting Sillimae and the ghost town

"Back in the USSR"

Some places reminded me of former East Germany. Good spots of 'Stalin Culture' Sten was good and entertaining guide, that has a lot of knowledge about every stop we have visited. He explained a lot of Estonia and from the past and today.

"Back in the U.S.S.R."

Maybe especially for a Swede, with all the common history, this is a very interesting and nice tour to take - to visit Narva and see some of the historical sites that is so deeply seated in our history. But the tour is also of great interest for all people who are interested in getting a glimpse of what life was like in the U.S.S.R. You will even be able to visit a formerly "secret city" that was not marked on the map!

"Estonia Eye Opener"

We didn't know much about Estonia, being Americans and such. To us, it was simply a former Soviet republic that found independence dumped on its lap when the Wall fell. Through JJs personal stories of growing up during these years, along with seeing some of the scars, we got a much better appreciation of the nation and people around us. I feel disappointed for those who travel to Tallinn and only see the Old City. This tour opened our eyes to so much more.

"interesting"

It was very interesting and guide knew everything ja told as lot about eastern Estonia.

"Interesting Tour"

Long tour but definitely worth it and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about the Soviet times. The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable.

"Urban exploring, castles and shale bings"

Katlin is a proper history teacher who kept us engaged and enthused as we struck east past storks and an elk (yes! -not guaranteed every day). From Narva we looked at Russia, Lenin, twin forts and the huge Krenholm cotton mill. Mining town Kohtla-Jarve, with garden city origins, shale bings and an Armenian restaurant (try the Georgian green lemonade, looks like absinthe), the model soviet Sullimae, which had some nefarious cold war purpose, and a not-entirely-abandoned mining village (some valiant residents still holding out with neat gardens against adjacent abandonment). Tolse Teutonic castle on the seashore and an interesting (yes) cement works started the day's visits. Be prepared for a long and stimulating day rich in recent and ancient memories. Thank you!

"Very informative"

I really wanted to learn about the Soviet occupation and see cities in the interiors of Estonia. It was a fantastic and informative tour. Our tour guide Kat was really good. Gave us ample information about the medieval history of Estonia and later on about the soviet occupation. We visited cities on the border town. Saw old abandoned castles/forts and some refurbished ones. This tour is not everyones cup of tea but if you are interested, I’d highly recommend it.

"Explore the unexplored"

Katrin tried really hard to accomodate us. She tended to all our needs. I got to see parts of Estonia which I couklld not have seen on my own in a day. Very informative comentry. It is a part of the country that has been neglected and needs more loving. It will not blow your mind, but will give you another perspective of this beautiful country.

"Very interesting tour of a different part of Estonia "

Kerr did a great job showing us a lot near and around Narva. He explained the history well and as we were on a private tour he also adapted the schedule when we asked to visit an additional site. It was a great day!

"Excellent"

Very interesting tour, our guide was excellent and we went to many places. Would have liked to have a bit longer in Narva. It was a long day.

"From old to modern history and from industrial heritage to nature."

I had an excellent tour guide Krislin. Her native town was Kohtla-Järve and she gave us a lot of information about this eastern part of Estonia. Many thanks! The tour is an excellent mixture of old (Toolse fortress, Narva castle+memorial of 1700 battle) and new history (WWII, Soviet era) together with industrial heritage (oil shale mining, Kreenholm factory). A contract of walking in a "ghost town" and in Sillamäe was unbelievable. The distance of 210 km gave me a perspective of a size of Estonia and of her fields and woods which we were passing.

"Great way to see Estonia "

We had a great day with Kert and especially enjoyed the abandoned town, which looked great in the snow! It's a long day but there's plenty to see and it's an excellent way to see a bit more of the country outside Tallinn. Kert was a nice guy and a great driver too!

"Trip back in time to the Soviet era"

This was a very interesting tour, looking back at life in Soviet times and how it has changed. Liine, our guide was very knowledgeable and we learnt so much about the past. Being able to stare into Russia from the very interesting Narva castle was a memorable experience. The trip is long but we stopped regularly in various places, where Liine explained their significant stories.

"The wild northeast of Estonia"

Great solo tour with Kert to the northeast of Estonia. A fascinating day of history both ancient and recent in a beautiful part of Europe. So much to see and do in a land of contrasts. Expect your preconceptions to be challenged, and enjoy a fun day out. Kert is an exceptional guide - knowledgeable, witty, accommodating and fun.

"Excellent Private Tour"

Narva and the Eastern Bloc Private day tour was a very interesting and enjoyable day. Our guide Laura was very knowledgeable and imparted plenty of information for us. She made the tour enjoyable, informative and full of extra information. We enjoyed walking along the edge of the Narva river which is the border with Russia. We would highly recommend doing this tour, to learn about the countryside and towns out of Tallinn. Well done Laura and thank you!

"Very special tour"

Thank you so much for an amazing journey into the past Soviet history of the country. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.

"Outstanding trip to Narva and Eastern Block Sites"

Kert Oun was the guide for an extremely enjoyable and educational outing from Tallinn to Narva and many sites with buildings from the Soviet era. A history buff, he went in depth on each site and the history of Estonia and it's people. He was also highly respectful of the local people during our visits to various towns. Don't miss this tour if you can manage it, especially if Kert is the guide.

"Narva‡ & The Eastern Bloc tour"

I attended Narva tour and it was a great experience for me! We visited places I would not be able to discover on my own, a spooky abandoned village and a huge former cotton factory, historical soviet buildings, castle on the very boarder with Russia and other cool places where the time has stopped and we could "taste" the forgotten fame from the past. Kert was a very nice guide with knowledge of the history and explained to us all the interesting background of the places. He was very friendly and together with other tourists, the tour turned to an exciting trip of friends.

"Narva‡ & Eastern Bloc Tour"

Travelling with Kert and Isabel has been a great pleasure. The day-tour has been filled with information about this out-of-the-way part of Estonia - historical as well as modern times have been covered by the profund knowledge of Kert. Both guides were great company (as were the other guest) and I had lots of fun. And thanks for the safe driving. Thanks again and all the best to you

"Narva‡ tour"

I took the tour to Narva last year with Kert as a tour guide. What I enjoyed the most was that there was never a rush, unlike most other tours I have been to. Kert had answers to all my questions. We all got along really well and it felt like I was travelling with a group of friends. Narva tour would be a perfect fit for someone who is interested in soviet era and exploring abandoned places. Everything was excellent!

"Excellent guiding"

We had a private tour with Kert last week from Tallinn to Narva. We enjoyed the full day with excellent guiding to historic places. Ingrid and Claes

"Well done private tour to †Narva‡"

We booked this full-day tour online in advance in order to see something different and spend a day with a local, away from the Capital. We were too sure what to expect, but found the experience well worth our time and the expense. We inquired about changing the date of the booking by a day due to more favorable weather and also asked about changing our final payment from cash to credit card and they effortlessly agreed. Our guide, Kert, was very timely, courteous and accommodating to our requests throughout the day. He provided good and interesting commentary and answered our many questions with plenty of details. Complements to Kert and Tallinn Traveller Tours for a job well done.

"A wonderful day on the Narva tour"

A massive thank you to JJ. I learnt and saw a lot in one day. His local knowledge and anecdotes made it a memorable day. If you want to see the side of Estonia not usually seen by tourists, then this is the tour for you. Also thank you to Marii, for suggesting the tour for me. To sum up; great value, great lunch, great guide and most of all a tour that does exactly what it says. See you next time.

"Väga huvitav ja seiklusrikas päev"

Suur-suur tänu teile suurepärase Ida-Eesti tuuri eest. Oli väga huvitav ja seiklusrikas päev. Suur tänu giid Triinule, kes viis meid huvitavatesse kohtadesse ning puistas hulgaliselt huvitavaid fakte. Soovitan ka teistele ettevõtetel viia oma töötajad hetkeks kontorist välja ning tugevdada seeläbi meeskonna vaimu.

"Highly recommended"

I've had an interesting, very well organized and informative tour to Narva with a wonderful guide Reelika! Before Narva we saw also Kohtla-Jarve, Sillamae, an old train station and a factory, a ghost town, a tank T-34, a lot of industrial things that I like so! I'm Russian but it was very interesting to see this part of a post soviet territory! We were only 5 and Reelika drive us in a car herself. It was a excellent day!!!!

We had a great trip with George on Saturday June 28th to Narva. This was a great experience and George a great guide. We strongly recommend this tour, to all, who wants to understand about estonian history.

"Shall use them again"

I want to thank Jevgeni for a wonderful day tour in Narva. We learned so much- in his calm was of speaking he was able to explain the history and plight of Estonia . He was a real professional, always smiling and accomodating. Highly recommended as was Marii who organized this for us. I shall use their services again for other trips, as I am presently living in Tallinn and want to see and learn as much as posible while here.

"A wonderful day tour in Narva"

"an absolute adventure".

When I travel, I crave new and different experiences. The only way I can describe Narva & Eastern Bloc Tallinn tour is an absolute adventure. Going to the Russian/Estonian Border seeing relics of the Old Communist Occupation in the east and learning about the immense history of the region were all highlights. The guides were great. I'd go back again in a heartbeat, even if it's just for the herring.

"Very accommodating with a last-minute booking"

A friend and I were thrilled to be taken on one of the first full tours of Narva & the Eastern Bloc from Tallinn. We spent more than 12 hours covering incredible ground with a very wide variety of historical, political and natural sights. Our host was informative and enthusiastic and very accommodating with a last-minute booking. Even if you've got a small group of two or three people interested, it's well worth inquiring about a private tour any day of the week, beyond the standard Saturdays that they suggest.

Meeting Point

The tour starts in front of Tallinn Tourist Info Center (Niguliste street 2) on the corner of Harju and Niguliste street. Our guide will meet you at the marked meeting point.

Narva, Estonia: Largest NATO Town on the Russia Border

One of the best preserved walled medieval centers in Europe can be found in Tallinn, Estonia, making it popular with travelers. Estonia’s second largest town of Tartu has been a significant university town since the 17th century, drawing visitors and international students. But Estonia’s third largest town of Narva, separated from Russia by the Narva River, draws far fewer visitors.

Around 97% of Narva’s 60,000 residents speak Russian. It’s not only a strategically significant destination, it’s extremely interesting to visit for viewing two medieval fortresses side by side across the river, spanning vastly differing geopolitical nations.

Train Travel Around Estonia is Easy

Estonia’s entire population is just 1.3 million people. That makes nearby Finland’s population of 5.5 million seem massive, which it isn’t as Chicago’s metropolitan area is home to 9.5 million people. Estonia is generally sparsely populated, but it has a clean, comfortable and efficient train system that connects its biggest towns.

narva tours

Getting around Estonia by train in 2023 feels like a cinch compared to major cities in the USA, United Kingdom and other large countries with huge train stations. Train stations in Estonia are not massive and information is clearly displayed. There are also no splitting trains in Estonia. Last year, I lost two hours of time traveling in the United Kingdom from Oxford to London because I was sitting in the wrong section of a train that split in Reading. Train splitting does not happen in Estonia, thankfully!

Narva Highlights

Narva castle (hermann castle).

Established around 1256, Narva Castle is also known as Narva fortress and Hermann Castle. The medieval castle in northeastern Estonia was originally built during Danish rule. It’s Estonia’s best preserved defense structure.

narva tours

Spanning over 700 years of history, Danes, Germans, Swedes and Russians have ruled Hermann Castle. Now part of Estonia, it houses the Narva Museum . The castle was restored during the 1970s and 1980s before opening as a museum. It was significantly damaged during World War II. A permanent exhibition showcases the history of Narva. It also houses around a dozen temporary exhibitions.

I had a fantastic meal at Restoran Rondeel in Hermann Castle. Both rustic and elegant, the restaurant offers hearty Estonian fare atop white tablecloths for reasonable prices. I also had one the most interesting conversations of my trip with a waitress there, as we discussed the current geopolitical situation, and the problem with disinformation across different media platforms.

Ivangorad Fortress Views (Russia)

Ivangorod Fortress is practically a stone’s throw across the Narva River from Estonia. The Moscovian Grand Prince Ivan III commissioned the Russian medieval castle in 1492. It subsequently grew into the town of Ivangorod, Leningrad Oblast, Russia.

narva tours

Located on the east bank of the Narva River, Ivangorad Fortress rests along the international border of Russia and Estonia. You don’t even have to set foot in Russian territory to get sweeping views of the impressive fort from Narva’s charming promenade. A fun quirk is watching both Estonian and Russian fishermen on both sides of the Narva River.

Narva Town Hall

Narva Town Hall is one of just three buildings in Narva that survived post World War II. The town was subject to an intense bombing campaign during that global conflict. Commissioned by Swedish King Charles XI in 1688, the Baroque-style building blends German, Swedish and Italian architectural influences. Completed in 1691, the project was led by the master architect George Teuffel from Lubeck, Germany .

narva tours

The Narva Town Hall also houses the Narva Tourist Information Center . A significant highlight of visiting the building is a virtual reality tour of what Narva looked like prior to World War II. There is also a spacious cafe around the corner for coffee, cake or a light bite (as well as charging my phone).

The Narva River Promenade

The Narva River flows 77 kilometers north into the Baltic Sea. It’s the largest Estonian river by discharge. The promenade is lovely for a stroll, while taking in views of Ivangorod Fortress. This is a popular area for jogging, biking, picnics and fishing on both sides of the river. For tourists, it’s simply a charming place to take in and ponder the current geopolitical situation.

Narva, Estonia Hotels

Narva hotell.

Modern rooms at Narva Hotell offer a comfortable stay in the heart of town. Rooms located on three floors have a mini-bar, TV and free wi-fi. Suites and junior suites feature a private sauna. The property has an on-site restaurant, lobby bar, conference room, banquet hall and a parking lot with security.

Narva Castle Rooms

Apartments at Narva Castle Rooms offer a comfortable and unique stay. The property offers access to a terrace, free private parking, barbeque facilities and free Wifi. Their traditional on-site restaurant is open for dinner and lunch. A continental breakfast is available, which includes fresh pastries and fruit.

Narva, Estonia is a unique destination to visit for those looking to get off the well beaten tourist path. Just 2 and 1/2 hours by train from Estonia’s capital of Tallinn, it’s even possible to visit just for a day trip during long summer days. The sweeping views of Hermann Castle and Ivangorod Fortress leave an indelible memory and were one of the absolute highlights of my travels across Estonia!

  • New life of old Narva

narva tours

The exhibition of virtual reality is open now in Narva Town Hall. With virtual reality glasses and touch screens, Narva appears as it was known before World War II and the bombing of 1944.

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time?

Would you like to see the European Baroque pearl, which now lives only in memories and old photographs?

  • Would you like to get an idea of the consequences of the bombing of Narva had and how Narva has changed over time?
  • Would you like to hear exciting stories about amazing people whose lives were closely connected to Narva and who are still being talked about?

If you answered YES at least to one of these questions, we are waiting for you in Narva Town Hall!

At the exhibition of virtual reality you can:

  • use tablets to view 3D models of the most exciting buildings of the Old Town,
  • get acquainted with the pre-war life of the city,

plunge into history while listening to memories of Old Narva contemporaries,

  • explore the borders of Old Narva.

Historical reference

Narva is a city with a long history, it was ruled over by Danes, Germans, Swedes, Russians and Estonians. Each of these periods changed Narva. The city burned down several times but it was almost always rebuilt. During World War II, Narva was on the front line at one point and became a battlefield between the two great powers. The situation was especially dire in March 1944, when the invading Soviet troops subjected Narva to an unprecedented bombardment, which destroyed almost the entire old town of Narva. When the war ended, people who returned to the city found only the ruins of the former Baltic baroque pearl. However, this time the old buildings were not rebuilt, as it would have been before. Now the virtual exposition “New Life of Old Narva” is returning the city to its former glory.

Exhibition of virtual reality

In addition to architecture, modern technologies also tell the stories of the Narva people with their vibrant lives, which help visitors discover completely new sides of Narva, see its history through the eyes of the city residents of that time, solve fascinating mysteries.

Virtual reality glasses help visitors get into the Town Hall Square built in the 17th century and virtually walk aroud the Old Narva.

Using tablets, guests can view 3D model of old town, read the stories of famous residents of that time as well as get acquainted with the pre-war life of the city as a whole.

If you are craving adventure, then Narva is the right place for you! The virtual Old Narva is designed for both individual visitors and groups. Families and school groups are also welcome! We can accommodate up to 40 people at the same time.
