How to watch the 2022 Tour Championship: TV schedule, streaming, tee times

The 2022 Tour Championship kicks off Thursday at East Lake.

Ben Jared/PGA TOUR

The 2022 Tour Championship, the grand finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs , takes place Aug. 25-28 at East Lake in Atlanta. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the Tour Championship all week long.

How to watch the Tour Championship

After 40-plus tournaments and two playoff events, the PGA Tour season which began last fall finally comes to an end this week at the Tour Championship. But a full field of players won’t be making the trip to Atlanta. Instead, just the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings following last week’s BMW Championship earn a tee time at East Lake.

Those 30 players will battle for the enormous $18 million first-place prize and the title of 2022 FedEx Cup champion, with second place receiving $6.5 million, 10th place earning $1 million and 30th place getting a cool $500,000.

The final event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is in full swing! And now we have ourselves a ball game.

Golfers are on the trek for a $75 million purse and the honor of claiming the FedEx Cup itself. The competition started with 125 players and, throughout each round, the number has dwindled down to 29 golfers now finishing out the run with the Tour Championship .

Who will be taking home the No. 1 spot?

Stay in the game with the latest updates on your beloved Philadelphia sports teams! Sign up here for our All Access Daily newsletter.

American superstar Scottie Scheffler, who was favored going into this weekend’s tournament, still remains at the top of the rankings. His performance on Thursday and Friday kept him way ahead of his counterparts, which is no surprise for the Masters champion. But Xander Schauffele’s last hole on Friday started to heat up the competition.

When it comes to the FedEx standings, Will Zalatoris and Patrick Cantlay are not far behind. Will they have a chance at claiming the cup over Scheffler in the last 36 holes?

Before we get into the nitty gritty of the second half of the competition, let’s look at what we have in store for the final two rounds, including the leaderboard and tee times:

2021 Tour Championship coverage: Live stream, watch online, schedule, TV channel, radio, tee times

The third of three fedex cup playoffs events takes place in atlanta this week.

jon-rahm-2021-tour-champ.png

The last tournament of the busiest season in the history of the PGA Tour (50 events in all) has reached its final day, and there is plenty at stake Sunday at the 2021 Tour Championship in Atlanta. The 30 best golfers on the PGA Tour this season are teeing it up at East Lake Golf Club with $46 million in prize money on the line.

Dustin Johnson was the defending champion, but he entered this week's tournament seven back of leader Patrick Cantlay. Rory McIlroy won this event in both 2016 and 2019, but he started eight back of Cantlay, who opened at 10 under after winning the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club last weekend.

Cantlay maintained his opening lead after 54 holes, entering Sunday at 20 under, two shots ahead of second-place Jon Rahm (-18) and five shots clear of the rest of the field. Justin Thomas (-15) is the only other golfer within legitimate striking distance as the competition for the $15 million grand prize ratchets up.

There are myriad other storylines to follow not involving that outrageous amount of cash at stake on Sunday afternoon. Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns are trying to play their way onto the Ryder Cup team. Patrick Reed is trying to bounce back after being hospitalized the first week of the playoffs (he hasn't played either of the first two events). He's also trying to play his way onto the Ryder Cup team.

There's a PGA Tour Player of the Year award up for grabs, likely more theatrics surrounding Bryson DeChambeau, who has become this season's lightning rod du jour. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are vying for their second FedEx Cup titles. Basically if you like professional golf at all, there's something to get you excited for the event at East Lake this weekend, and CBS Sports will bring you updates and recaps of the action all week long. Here's how to follow online and on TV as well.

2022 Tour Championship: Format, standings explained

By max molski • published august 23, 2022 • updated on august 23, 2022 at 12:46 pm.

It all comes down to Atlanta.

The 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs will conclude in Georgia’s capital city this weekend with the Tour Championship. The four-round event is the culmination of a season-long competition on the PGA Tour, as well as the tour’s three-tournament playoffs.

Masters winner Scottie Scheffler leads the standings and is the man to beat entering the Tour Championship, while reigning Tour Championship winner Patrick Cantlay won the second leg. Not only are Scheffler and Cantlay the top contenders based on their talent, but their season-long results will give them an advantage at this year’s Tour Championship. Will Zalatoris won the first event and was in third place, but he will miss the Tour Championship with the back injury that forced him to withdraw last weekend.

Before the event gets underway, here’s everything to know about the 2022 Tour Championship:

What is the Tour Championship?

The Tour Championship is the third and final event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, with the winner of the event taking home the FedEx Cup title.

Where is the Tour Championship?

The event will be held from Aug. 25-28 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Along with 1998, 2000 and 2002, the tournament has taken place at the course every year since 2004.

How many players compete in the Tour Championship?

Thirty players will compete in the final FedEx Cup Playoffs event.

The playoff field began with 125 players for the FedEx St. Jude Championship earlier this month. It was cut down to 70 for the BMW Championship in Delaware last weekend, and the top 29 players in the standings (minus Zalatoris) following that event will make up the field in Atlanta.

Are LIV Golf players allowed at the Tour Championship?

LIV golfers were banned from the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, a federal judge in California ruled that three LIV golfers who sought a temporary restraining order would not be allowed to compete in the playoffs.

How does the Tour Championship work?

FedEx Cup points for the 30 remaining players are used to create “starting strokes” for the Tour Championship. Players at the top of the standings are given more strokes under par for the start of the event, giving them a head start on the competition.

As the leader in the FedEx Cup standings entering the event, Scheffler will start Thursday at 10 strokes under par. Here’s a full look at how many starting strokes each player will be given based on how they stack up with FedEx Cup points:

  • 10 under: Scottie Scheffler
  • 8 under: Patrick Cantlay
  • 6 under: Xander Schauffele
  • 5 under: Sam Burns
  • 4 under: Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Sepp Straka, Sungjae Im
  • 3 under: Jon Rahm, Scott Stallings, Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick
  • 2 under: Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Speith, Joaquin Niemann, Viktor Hovland
  • 1 under: Collin Morikawa, Billy Horschel, Tom Hoge, Corey Conner, Brain Harman
  • Even par: K.H. Lee, J.T. Poston, Sahith Theegala, Adam Scott, Aaron Wise

How much does the Tour Championship winner earn?

Every stroke counts when there’s $75 million up for grabs.

The player who wins the Tour Championship will take home $18 million to go along with the actual FedEx Cup. The second-place finisher will earn a $6.5 million paycheck, as well. All players who finish in the top 10 will take home at least $1 million, and all 30 participants will make at least $500,000 from the event.

Nelly Korda, LPGA in prime position to lift women's golf. So far, they're whiffing.

As nelly korda continues to dominate, generating new interest in women's golf should be one of the easiest sales jobs the lpga will ever have..

nbc tour championship

Last Sunday, a peak audience of 1.9 million people tuned in to NBC and watched Nelly Korda record her fifth consecutive tournament victory at the Chevon Championship, the first major of the LPGA season.

It’s not a Caitlin Clark rating, but for a sport that has been plagued by poor television coverage, lack of breakthrough stars and questionable management, it was one of the better days women’s golf has seen in quite some time.

In theory, the LPGA should be in prime position to reap some of the benefits being generated by the recent surge of interest in women’s sports.

For one thing, their counterparts on the men’s tour have turned off scores of fans thanks to the interminable struggle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf and the odious greed driving so much division and dissatisfaction.

After years of unfairly blaming the prominence of Asian players for struggling to connect with stateside audiences, the LPGA now has a 25-year-old American from a prominent sporting family dominating the sport.

And given that fewer than 100 days remain before the Olympics, where Korda will be defending her gold medal from Tokyo three years ago, this should be one of the easiest sales jobs women’s golf will ever have to generate real, enduring new interest in what has always been a very good and watchable product.

The door is open. There are no excuses. The time is now.

But is women’s golf truly ready for this moment? I’m not so sure.

Up until now, three things have been undeniably true about women’s golf and its struggle to break through outside of its small, niche fan base:

  • The LPGA has failed to craft a compelling narrative for why people should watch, outside the mere fact of its existence.
  • Some of its stars, including Korda prominently, haven’t gone above and beyond to promote the game and make themselves familiar to large audiences.
  • And television has struggled to give the product its due, both in terms of exposure and quality of broadcast.

The third point, in particular, was disappointing Sunday. While NBC should be given credit for putting the Chevron on its over-the-air network and not stuffing it on Peacock or the Golf Channel, it would have been jarring this weekend to flip between the LPGA and the concurrent PGA Tour event being shown on CBS.

While the latter featured sharp graphics, high-tech camera angles and shot-tracing gizmos that are now standard in men’s golf broadcasts, the NBC coverage looked like a penny-pinching, outdated endeavor – the bare minimum to get these women on TV.

At a time when we’re now used to a women’s basketball broadcast on ABC or ESPN looking and feeling the exact same as a men’s broadcast, it was actually jarring to turn on NBC and see something that was so technically inferior to what the same network does when it shows The Players or the U.S. Open.

And because NBC clearly didn’t devote as many camera crews as it would have for a men’s major championship, it couldn’t show much of what was happening in the groups ahead of Korda. As a result, the broadcast felt like it dragged along at a glacial pace because there just wasn’t much action in-between Korda’s shots.

While NBC may be happy with the rating and proud of giving women’s golf an opportunity to be shown on network TV, it should be embarrassed by the way it presented the product. The magnitude of Korda’s achievement and the moment for the LPGA were simply not done proper justice.

But this is more than a television issue.

Korda has been a potential gold mine for the LPGA ever since she won her first event at age 20 but has been known for being quite discerning about how much time she’s willing to spend doing the kind of extra promotional work that the sport badly needs.

Whether you attribute it to her preference for privacy or wanting to focus only on the birdies and bogies, the reality is that it’s hard for women’s golf to maximize this moment when its biggest star is not known to be particularly media-friendly or willing to promote something other than her golf swing.

It was interesting before the Chevron that Stacy Lewis, a two-time major winner, said point-blank that Korda had a responsibility to be more visible and more accessible in service of the LPGA.

“Every week, she needs to be in here (with the media) talking about it and talking about how good she’s playing, and I don't know what that’s going to be, what that looks like for her,” Lewis said. “I've been in her shoes, I’ve been No. 1 in the world, I’ve been the top American and you’re asked to do a lot of things.

"But give the media a couple hours every week. That’s what she’s going to have to start doing. But her playing great golf, that's what pushes us more forward than anything.”

It was notable that Korda, shortly after her victory Sunday, showed up for a brief chat on the "No Laying Up" podcast that is particularly popular with younger golf fans. That was a positive step. On the other hand, it wasn't so great that Korda pulled out of this week’s JM Eagle LA Championship, citing exhaustion from winning four events in five weeks.

While it’s hard to criticize an athlete for being cautious with their schedule and their body, it’s also true that Korda skipped the LPGA’s Asian swing in February and early March and won’t have another tournament to play until May 9. Barring an injury, there's an argument to be made that Korda should have at least tried to give it a go as the LPGA stops in the nation’s second-biggest media market.

The responsibility on star women’s athletes to both perform and promote can often seem unfair, and maybe it is. Does Scottie Scheffler get the same scrutiny for how many media and promotional commitments he takes on or which tournaments he skips?

That’s a legitimate conversation, but if the LPGA and its players aspire to capitalize on the wave of enthusiasm for women’s sports and Korda’s historic streak, they need to show more readiness than we’ve seen so far.

Korda needs to do better. The LPGA needs to do better. And television networks definitely need to do better.

U.S. surfer accompanied by dolphins as she wins world championship event in Australia

Hawaiian surfer Gabriela Bryan shared a wave with a pod of dolphins as she won her first world championship tour event over Californian rookie Sawyer Lindblad in pumping surf at the Western Australia Margaret River Pro on Sunday.

Margaret River local Jack Robinson took out a spectacular men’s final against Hawaii’s two-time world champion John John Florence in a replay of their 2022 final of the same event.

Robinson and Florence were the two form surfers of the event and traded huge carves on the double-overhead walls as the waves finally improved on last day of the 11-day competition window.

The decisive moment came midway through the final when Robinson scored an excellent 9.10 out of 10 for two giant turns on the biggest wave of the day and followed it up with a lofty frontside air on the very next wave for an 8.17.

Florence kept battling and scored an excellent wave of his own but could not reel in the Western Australian, who finished with 17.27 out of 20 to Florence’s 16.04.

“That was the final I wanted, I wanted to throw everything at it. It’s always fun surfing against John — we’re going to have many more heats together,” said Robinson, who missed the event last year due to injury.

The world tour next heads to the thumping tubes of Teahupo’o in Tahiti, where both Robinson and Florence will be among the favourites battling for Olympic gold in just a few months time.

Florence earlier scored the only perfect 10 of the event in his semi-final against Australian wildcard George Pittar, blowing his tail out and holding onto his board with the toenails of one foot before recovering for a couple more turns.

Western Australia Margaret River Pro

Both Bryan, 22, and 18-year-old Lindblad had to go deep at Margaret River to avoid the mid-season cut and secure their place for the remainder of the 2024 tour.

Lindblad went into the final in top form, having dispatched two-time world champion Tyler Wright in their semi-final to secure her place above the cut line.

Bryan took a commanding lead with a 7.83 for two powerful turns on her forehand as a handful of dolphins swooped around her.

“When I kicked out, I was just wow! That wave was sent to me by someone, the dolphins in it. It was magical,” said Bryan, who scored an even better 8.10 on her second scoring ride.

“I’m just so happy we got good waves today and all the girls put on a really good show. It’s insane, I just won!”

Both the men’s and women’s field will now be cut for the final four events of the world tour, with 11-time world champion  Kelly Slater  and Australian veteran Sally Fitzgibbons among those missing out.

Uncertainty with NBC’s golf broadcast team raises question: Who’ll be the lead analyst at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst?

courses-2014-06-cosl19-pinehurst.jpg

Sometime in early March, Sam Flood, the executive producer and president of production at NBC Sports, told a few colleagues he needed to shake up the network’s golf coverage. Undoubtedly, eyes must have been rolling. Because the last thing NBC’s golf production needed was for Flood to shake things up further.

The duration of an earthquake can range from a few seconds to several minutes, but the tremors and aftershocks that have been rattling Peacock golf have lasted a few years now. And the foundation is weakening to the point where the network, gearing up for the Olympic Games this summer, does not appear ready for one of its premier golf events, the 124th U.S. Open in June at Pinehurst.

Cost-cutting moves in sports production aren’t always noticeable. One fewer graphic here or the loss of a speed camera or editing machine there aren’t necessarily going to diminish coverage appreciably in the eyes of most home viewers. The production team knows the difference, however, and many of them at NBC and Golf Channel (which operate jointly under the Comcast banner) can’t believe what little has been left at the disposal of the brilliant long-time golf producer Tommy Roy. Every week during NBC’s recent run of events in Florida and Texas something else was being hacked as golf ratings flagged. The penny pinching shouldn't be surprising when the outlet opted to produce coverage of the 44th Ryder Cup in Rome—only one of the two most popular golf events in the world aside from the Masters—from Stamford, Conn.

One staffer joked that “pretty soon, we’re going to just do artist’s renditions of coverage as opposed to showing actual shots with a camera.”

Now, do you know what viewers do notice? Besides, that is, too many commercials. Faces and voices. The talent lineup. And this is where the shifting has been seismic. And mystifying.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/4/curt-byrum-kevin-kisner-dan-hicks.jpg

Curt Byrum and Kevin Kisner shared the booth with Dan Hicks at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

Lead analyst Paul Azinger was cut loose last November when the former PGA champion, through his agent, countered on an underwhelming one-year extension not knowing it was a take-it-or-leave-it offer. But Azinger, who along with Johnny Miller are the only men to sit in the analyst chair since 1990, was only the latest scalp.

The year before that, veterans Roger Maltbie and Gary Koch learned their contracts would not be renewed. Maltbie actually had one foot out the door before that, but Jim “Bones” Mackay returned to the caddie ranks with Justin Thomas in late 2021, leaving NBC short an on-course reporter. The bench got even thinner when major winners David Duval and Justin Leonard resumed their playing careers on the PGA Tour Champions and Notah Begay III cut back his TV commitment to also accommodate senior golf. Meanwhile, Peter Jacobsen, a semi-regular contributor, rarely gets called upon anymore.

And then there was the departure of popular quipster David Feherty, who walked out of the NBC compound at St. Andrews following the 2022 Open Championship and promptly jumped onto the LIV Golf League broadcast team. “David was the canary in the coal mine,” said one former colleague. “He left in the middle of his contract. Heck, it was in the middle of the year! And NBC didn’t lift a finger to keep him. It was just another number they could move off the ledger.”

It's worth noting that Feherty, Azinger, Maltbie and Koch were the four highest-paid announcers.

Repeated requests to interview Flood were denied. Via text, Roy took a pass on personnel questions.

All of this wouldn’t necessarily indicate disarray were it not for Flood’s throw-it-against-the-wall approach to finding Azinger’s replacement. In house, Begay, Brandel Chamblee, Paul McGinley and Smylie Kaufman have taken turns in the hot seat, while Kevin Kisner and Luke Donald have been given tryouts. Mackay, still on the hook contractually for a few events this year, had to slide in at the Vidanta Mexican Open when Kisner and Geoff Ogilvy weren’t available. With Brad Faxon becoming a staple in the 18th hole tower, the network has transitioned to a four-man setup. There is little elbow room, let alone a sense of continuity, though host Dan Hicks, in the last year of his contract, Terry Gannon and Steve Sands hold things together. True pros.

In a reflection of growing desperation, Flood managed to lure Maltbie and Koch back for the opening two days of coverage of the Players. The rest of the NBC team seemed buoyed by their presence, but, oddly, neither was asked to stay the weekend.

Having gone through all the trial and error—and don’t even ask how those PGA Tour events felt about their involuntary involvement in the experiments—sources at the network say NBC is no closer to finding a successor to Azinger. The clock is ticking. The U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 that begins on June 13 fast approaches. A USGA spokesperson said an announcement on coverage plans—specifically who will be sitting in the lead analyst chair—will be made in a few weeks at U.S. Open media day. Which might be another way of saying NBC has yet to be forthcoming with answers.

Imagine CBS Sports officials telling Masters chairman Fred Ridley seven weeks out that they’ll get back to him on their broadcast lineup.

What are NBC’s options? Well, Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, apparently is out; he recently declined an offer, though perhaps in the interim NBC can talk him into it. Kisner probably isn’t an option after his history of criticism of the USGA. Donald at least brings decent credentials as a former World No. 1. Chamblee and McGinley are Golf Channel heavyweights on the “Live From” set. No point in weakening that program.

That leaves Faxon as perhaps the best viable alternative. Plus, he’s already on board. Zero additional overhead. Meanwhile, Maltbie and Koch reportedly will make an encore appearance at Pinehurst, supposedly for all four days this time. Is Mackay, once again out of the caddie ranks, also returning? He could not be reached for comment, but sources say he has been asked to further buttress the ground game, where the reliable Curt Byrum also can help out if he’s not calling holes.

The USGA transferred its broadcast rights from Fox to NBC/Golf Channel at the height of the pandemic in 2020 after Fox submitted a stunning $1.1 billion bid that began in 2015. That deal ended a partnership dating back to 1994, when NBC was able to pry the USGA rights from ABC, thanks largely to Roy being at the controls, then-president Dick Ebersol committing the resources, and former U.S. Open winner Miller, brutally honest and a passionate champion of the USGA, serving as the voice of the telecasts.

The current deal, on which Fox still pays 30 percent, expires in 2025. The exclusive negotiating period between the USGA and Comcast begins later this year and then is thrown open in ’25 if the sides can’t come to an agreement. Golf viewers would be right to ask how much Flood even cares.

LOS ANGELES – Grace Kim stumbled to a 5-over 76 on Saturday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship — and still held onto a share of the lead.

It was that kind of a day at Wilshire Country Club, the tree-lined layout made difficult by bumpy poa annua greens and tricky wind conditions.

Recommended Videos

“It’s tough for everyone today,” Kim said. “It was just one of those days. It’s just golf.”

Four strokes ahead entering the day after rounds of 64 and 66, Kim was tied with fellow Australian Hannah Green, the defending champion who saved par with a 12-footer on the par-3 18th for a 70. They were at 7-under 206.

“The putt that I made on 18 almost felt like I birdie,” Green said.

Maja Stark, playing alongside Kim in the final group, bogeyed the 18th for a 73.

“You know that you can’t take every missed putt too personally because that’s going to happen for everyone,” Stark said.

The Swede was a stroke back with Jin Hee Im, the South Korean player who had a back-nine 30 in a 63 for the best round of the day, and Germany's Esther Henseleit (71). Nasa Hataoka of Japan was 5 under after a 64.

Kim bogeyed the par-5 second hole and had a double bogey on the par-3 fourth. She also dropped shots on the par-4 10th and 16th holes.

“I tried to stay in the present of just the next shot, giving myself good chances,” said the 23-year-old Kim, The LOTTE Championship last year in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. “I know I had a few three-putts in there, but just keeping my head in the game and not losing that shot focus.”

The 27-year-old Green rebounded from a 2-foot par miss on the par-4 17th with the par save on 18. After bogeying three of the last six holes on the front nine, she played a four-hole stretch on the back nine in 4 under. She eagled the par-5 13th and birdied 14 and 16, then missed the short putt on 17.

“I didn’t really have many full swings. Had a lot of half-shots in,” said Green, the winner in Singapore early last month for her fourth LPGA Tour title. “With the greens firming up and getting bouncy it kind of made it hard to completely trust that shot.”

Stark finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her record-tying fifth straight victory.
