Culture shock rating.

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Traveler Reviews

This city tour hop on off bus had a good speaker audio system in English so you didn't need the hard plastic ear pieces to hear the tour info. We didn't realize that there are three different hop on off tours in Edinbourgh. We booked the city tour in advance only to find it didn't go to our cruise port. For 4 pounds more each, we were able to add another hop on off bus that connected us. It was raining so with only half of the top of the bus was covered, many people were on the lower level. One bus passed me without stopping. I guess they were full. Otherwise, the tour was typical.

A good tour to get a feel for Newcastle. Details are not well publicised at the website. Tours start half-hourly from Bewick Street near Central Station from 1030, and a circuit take 55 minutes. Last tour is at 1500. There are 17 stops. Tours run 7 days a week. Seniors fares were listed as unavailable at the Viator website, so we paid 8 pounds each online through Viator for our one-day Adult tickets. Had we paid at the bus it would have been only 6 pounds each for Seniors tickets. The driver said there is never a problem with seating availability. Good commentary, but only available in English.

Complete bust as I purchased the ticket but the hop on hop off was not running that day due to the Great North race. They should have known that when I booked as it is the biggest half marathon in the world.

Waited for an hour to get on. First bus was full. Second bus had no audio downstairs in bus. We were afraid to hop off as we might not be able to get back on the next one.

Brilliant way to see the sights. Beware that the last departure in Summer is around 2.45pm.

This is a good option to see the must important attractions. Takes between 20 to 30 minutes for the bus to pass by. The only downside is that the bus didn and #39;t have the option for headphones so that makes difficult to hear the explanation. That and #39;s why I give 4 start

We were so pleasantly surprised by how much we liked this city. We walked over the tilting bridge and got to see the tilting bridge in action. Amazing. The hop on/hop off bus was a great way to get an overview of what and #39;s out there. The people are so nice!!

Unfortunately, we were not able to use the vouchers. Reading the tour times from 1030 until three, that was followed by the terms that the voucher was good for 24 hours. I misunderstood and thought that the last tour started at three. However when we try to catch the tour bus at three the driver said they were done for the day. It is unfortunate we did not get to use the Boucher's so I can give no review. Because a review rating is required for me to submit this, I will give it one star but it is not actually an accurate reading

We have used Hop-on Hop-off buses in several European cities as a quick way to get orientated and see sites that you probably would not have bothered with otherwise. There was a stop a short walk from our hotel and easy enough to find. A bus arrived within a minute of the displayed time. The driver was able to quickly check our vouchers then hand us our tickets and maps. The view from the top deck was fine as we were near the front sheltered from any wind. The commentary was informative but I was surprised that no earphones were offered for alternative languages. Newcastle and Gateshead have some quite steep streets so the bus trip proved its worth in taking the strain. We stayed on the bus for the whole tour and did not do the hop-off, hop-on bit as anything we wanted to view proved to be within our walking range. The tour was value for money and we were satisfied that it fulfilled our wishes.

The tour was nice and commentary in English very clear. The stop at the Royal Mile was a bit crowded. The staff we very helpful.

Newcastle City Tours

Hadrian’s wall tour, tour of hadrian’s wall.

Our Hadrian’s Wall tour leaves Newcastle and heads into Northumberland to begin your visit to the only Roman World Heritage Site in the UK, Hadrian’s Wall.

Nearly 2000 years ago in 122 AD, the Roman Emperor Hadrian embarked on a huge undertaking: to mark the northernmost boundary of Roman Britain with what has become known today as Hadrian’s Wall.

Parts of Hadrian’s Wall are still visible today; the line of it stretching from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west, and the fortifications continuing down the west coast to Ravenglass.

Vindolanda is a fascinating Roman fort and settlement lying just to the south of Hadrian’s Wall and it makes a perfect destination for our second stop.

Recent excavations have uncovered numerous buildings and some of the most unusual and well preserved artifacts from the Roman world. In the superb site museum, set in charming gardens, you will be able see Roman boots, shoes, armour, jewellery and coins.

Vindolanda Fort also boasts a full size replica of Hadrian’s Wall in both stone and timber, giving visitors a true idea of the impressive might of the monument.

Housesteads

Our third stop on the Hadrian’s Wall tour takes us to one of Rome’s most northerly outposts, Housesteads Roman Fort. Housesteads Roman Fort was built around AD 122 when the Roman Empire was at its height. It remains one of Britain’s most impressive ruins.

Housesteads Roman Fort was one of sixteen permanent bases along Hadrian’s Wall. It is one of the best-preserved and still manages to conjure an evocative picture of Roman military life.

If you would like to book one of our Hadrian’s Wall tours, or you would like a little more information about any of our alternative tours then please contact us, either by calling on 07780 958679 or by clicking here and leaving your details.

Would recommend as tour operator to anyone seeing the Wall and environs for the first time. Not only well-informed and efficient as tour operator but also personable, charming and able to tailor our tour and experience to the things we were really interested in. Highest recommendation.

Safety Information

To attend our walks you need to be reasonably fit, prepared to be responsible for your own safety, and to supervise any children in your care.  Appropriate clothing and footwear is recommended.  A bottle of water, an umbrella and an extra layer wouldn't go amiss.  The British weather is notoriously changeable!  Newcastle is an historic city with uneven pavements and narrow passages add to its unique character.  There are also often steps to navigate.  Our walks take approximately 90 minutes, are you comfortable walking and standing for that length of time? If there’s any activity you are unable to do or if you have a concern, please contact us at [email protected] before booking.  We try to stick to footpaths and use pedestrian crossings where available.  If you have any pre-medical conditions or injuries that may affect you walking or feel unwell during a walk, please let your Guide know.

Standard Disclaimer

Your participation in the guided walk is at your own risk and we shall not be held liable under any circumstances for any matter arising out of your participation. We accept no responsibility or liability for loss or injury (other than for matters for which we are not legally able to exclude or limit liability). We have public liability insurance.
