Benefits of booking travel in the portal, is chase's travel portal worth using, does chase's travel portal price match, how to use chase's travel portal, what else you need to know, chase travel portal tips, recapped.

Chase's travel portal is one of the best features of having a Chase credit card. Earning Ultimate Rewards® with credit cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® can deliver big value if you know how to navigate Chase's travel portal.

Much like third-party booking sites like Orbitz or Expedia , you can use Chase's travel portal to book flights, hotels and cruises, among other things. You can redeem points to offset the cost of the trip or pay in cash. You won’t have to worry about blackout dates or award inventory caps like you may find when using airline miles or hotel points for the same trip since you are essentially buying travel with cash.

Within the portal, you can also redeem points for merchandise or transfer them to other travel loyalty programs if you are short on miles and points there. In short, having a flexible points currency like Chase Ultimate Rewards® is one of the smartest routes you can take in the miles and points game. Booking travel through Chase's travel portal is simple. Here’s what you need to know about the portal.

Earn points on paid reservations

The primary reason you may want to book travel via Chase's travel portal is that you earn Chase Ultimate Rewards® on paid reservations. You can earn 5x points on airfare booked within the portal and 10x points on hotels and car rentals.

That can really add up, but beware that when booking hotels with Chase Ultimate Rewards®, you are not eligible to earn points with the hotel loyalty program or reap elite status benefits since it is using a third-party service. The tradeoff can vary by property, but using Chase's travel portal is especially helpful when booking unaffiliated hotels or hotel brands where you usually do not collect points or have elite status. In those instances, you are less likely to be passing up the perks of points earning and elite status.

Earn points on airfare even for redemptions

When booking airfare through Chase, you do earn miles no matter if you pay with cash or points. This makes using points for airfare via the travel portal more beneficial than redeeming for a hotel.

Earn bonus points for restaurant bookings

You can even earn bonus points when making restaurant bookings through the portal. This can be a great way to enhance your trips with great dining in advance rather than chatting with your hotel concierge.

orbit travel portal

Shop for the best value redemption

Since the value per Chase Ultimate Rewards® points is relatively constant, using the travel portal may not always be the best option. You may be able to spend fewer points if you book the same trip with the specific airline or hotel's points instead of Chase Ultimate Rewards® points. This is more common with itineraries with high cash prices, like a hotel night that's particularly expensive. Always compare the cost of using traditional miles and points over using Chase points to see which offers better value. In some cases, you may want to transfer Chase points to partner programs to squeeze more value from them.

One example where that could be exceptional value is for expensive business class tickets that also have award availability. Let’s say you’re looking for a United business class ticket between Newark and London. If the cash cost of a one-way ticket is $2,505, that will cost you 250,500 Ultimate Rewards® points when redeeming at a value of one penny per point. In this example, it may be worth redeeming MileagePlus miles instead.

orbit travel portal

For this flight, the one-way mileage cost is 91,700 miles. Even if you don’t have enough United miles, you could transfer that amount from Chase Ultimate Rewards® (since they are partners), and save yourself a nice chunk of Chase points in the process. It is always best to compare the cash cost with the redemption cost using both Chase and the airline or hotel’s own loyalty program.

Chase's travel portal can be worth using in specific scenarios.

Redemptions: You hold the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card or the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and want to make a redemption. The first two cards get an elevated point value of 1.5 cents apiece when redeeming points and booking travel in the portal; the latter gets 1.25 cents apiece.

Bookings. You hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , the Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and want to earn bonus points. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Freedom Unlimited® typically earn 5x points per $1 spent on all travel purchased through Chase's travel portal, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 5-10 points per $1 spent on Chase Dining, hotel stays, rental cars and air travel purchased through Chase's travel portal.

Otherwise, you might be wise to book travel directly with the airline, hotel or rental car company, which can simplify cancellations or changes to your bookings. You can do this with cash, card or by transferring points to one of Chase's transfer partners.

Despite being powered by Expedia — an online travel agency that includes a Price Match Promise — Chase's travel portal does not offer customers a price matching benefit.

Capital One Travel has price drop protection that will advise you when to buy and refund you if the price of your flight drops by a certain amount after purchase.

Once logged into your Chase account, you’ll find a sidebar on the right of the page with your Chase Ultimate Rewards® balance. Once you click on it, it brings up a variety of options for how to spend your points. Choose “travel” to take you to the standard booking page where you can enter your plans for flights, cruises, rental cars, hotels or other activities.

Depending on the card you have, your points are worth between 1-1.5 cents per point. The best value card is the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which offers 1.5 cents in value per point to redeem through the portal, while the Chase Freedom Unlimited® only values points at a penny per point. This means that Chase determines the number of points you’ll need to redeem for an award based on the cash cost of the travel you are trying to book.

orbit travel portal

It’s easy to search for the travel you want. Chase has partnered with Expedia to run the search engine, but this has limited the search function a bit with some low-cost airlines no longer appearing. Be mindful of this when making a reservation (perhaps check to see if the airfare is similar to the basic economy or main cabin price on the airline’s website first).

The advanced options button lets you sort by airline and class of service.

orbit travel portal

Much like other online booking engines, once you find the travel plans you like, you enter your personal details. The best part of using the travel portal is that you can pay in full with points, cash or use a mix of points and cash. You can adjust the amount of points you want to spend for your trip and the website will display how much remaining cash you owe. If you need more points, you can transfer them from other Chase Ultimate Rewards® earning accounts you may have to boost your balance.

The process for booking hotels or car rentals is similar to reserving a flight, giving you the option to use a mix of cash or points.

orbit travel portal

To book a cruise with points, however, you’ll have to call Chase directly.

Another exception is when making a reservation at Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection properties, you can only make a cash reservation (you pay upon checkout) and cannot redeem Ultimate Rewards® points. You may still want to reserve through the portal, though, since it means you are eligible for additional perks like daily breakfast for two and a special amenity that varies by the hotel.

You can also reserve activities at home or your destination and pay for them in cash or with points. These include tours, museum visits and other local experiences.

orbit travel portal

Chase may charge a service fee on certain reservations. You will want to weigh whether this small charge is worth the benefit in Chase Ultimate Rewards® points you may use.

Many hotel companies offer member-only rates to entice you to book directly with them rather than through a third party. You’ll want to weigh whether earning Chase Ultimate Rewards® points is more valuable than the difference in the lowest rate booked directly with the hotel company.

When making any reservation through Chase's travel portal, you will be at the mercy of its own policies when it comes to changing or canceling a ticket. You will have to contact Chase directly to adjust your plans since you made it independently of the airline or hotel company. This can make it especially difficult with last-minute travel plan changes.

» Learn more: Advanced tips for redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards

orbit travel portal

With a little comparison shopping for your travel plans, you can squeeze exceptional value from points via the Chasee's travel portal. They can be redeemed like cash for travel, but always be sure to compare a reservation using Chase points to the cost of using hotel or airline points.

Sometimes, it may be less advantageous to use Chase points since you will lose out on travel-related perks. Other times, you’ll come out ahead since you can save cash using points, which is helpful when there is no award availability for your preferred travel plans.

If you're TPG fan, you probably know how ardently we promote transferring Chase points to valuable airline and hotel partners. It's the best way to get truly outsized value for your rewards. But it's not always the best option. Reader Richard wants to know how to know which method to use:

Let's take a simple quiz to help you decide whether you should book airfare through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal or instead transfer your points to airlines .

What is the Chase Travel portal?

The Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal is essentially an online travel agency similar to Priceline or Orbitz (it's actually powered by Expedia). When you log into this platform with your Chase credentials, you can book airfare, hotels, rental cars and more, either by paying with your credit card, redeeming Chase points, or with a mix of both. You can redeem your points for travel at a rate between 1 and 1.5 cents each, depending on which specific Chase credit cards you have (more on this below).

Related: How to use the Chase Travel Portal

orbit travel portal

You'll even earn bonus points when booking through the Chase Travel Portal and paying with the following cards:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve -- 10 points per dollar on hotel and car rental purchases
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card -- 5 points per dollar on all travel

While this method is unquestionably less complicated than transferring points to Chase travel partners, because you can only redeem your points at fixed rates, it caps the value proposition of your Chase points (versus all the options transferring to airline partners opens, up which we estimate raises the value of Ultimate Rewards points to 2 cents apiece). That's why we rarely recommend using your points this way -- but the portal can be a life-saver in some instances.

Below are a few questions to ask yourself before transferring points to an airline or booking flights through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal .

When to use the Chase Portal instead of transferring points

Question 1: can you travel during your desired travel dates by transferring points.

One of the greatest aspects of booking through the Chase Travel Portal is its ability to vanquish blackout dates and award seat availability that many frequent-flyer programs impose.

When you transfer points to an airline, you'll (usually) be subject to "award inventory." Airlines tend to release a small pool of seats that are eligible to be booked with miles. If those seats are booked, you may not be able to use miles to reserve your flight -- even if there are still empty seats on the plane.

But when you book through the Chase Travel Portal, you're effectively using points to "pay" for a seat. Chase is taking your points, and they're reserving your flight with money. That is to say, if a seat is available for sale, you can book it with points via the Chase Travel Portal just as if you were paying for it with your credit card. It's a good option if you're vacationing around the holidays or during a peak travel season.

Related: Best credit cards for airline purchases

If Chase airline partners offer no award seats for your desired dates, book through the Chase Portal. If there are available award seats, proceed to the next question.

Question 2: Does booking via the Chase Travel Portal cost fewer points?

When you book a flight through the Chase Travel Portal, you'll receive a flat value for your points. This value depends on the credit card you hold:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve -- 1.5 cents per point
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card -- 1.25 cents per point
  • Ink Business Preferred Credit Card -- 1.25 cents per point
  • No-annual-fee Chase cards that earn Ultimate Rewards -- 1 cent each

In other words, if the flight you want costs $300, you can book it for 20,000 points if you've got the Chase Sapphire Reserve. But you'll need 24,000 points if you've got the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Ink Business Preferred due to those value differentials.

Compare the above Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal price to the price of an award flight using frequent-flyer miles, and choose the option that costs fewer points. It's easy to do so since Chase points transfer to its airline partners on a 1:1 basis. If the prices in Chase points and airline miles are nearly identical, proceed to the next question.

Question 3: How many miles will you earn for your flight?

You earn airline frequent-flyer miles when you purchase a flight. You do not earn airline miles when booking an award flight using frequent-flyer miles from a Chase points transfer. Therefore, you'll earn airline miles when booking through the Chase Travel Portal since it's just like purchasing tickets, but not when you transfer your points to an airline program and book an award flight.

Depending on the airline, fare and your elite status, this could certainly move the needle in favor of the Chase portal. Below is a screenshot of a random one-way flight on United Airlines between Chicago and Seattle where the number of United miles (a Chase transfer partner) and Chase points redeemed through the Ultimate Rewards portal are roughly equivalent. While you wouldn't earn any elite-qualifying activity or award miles by transferring Chase points to United and then redeeming for an award ticket, if you redeemed Chase points through the Ultimate Rewards portal instead, you would earn between 670 and 2,000 miles for the flight along with Premier-qualifying credits, depending on the fare you purchased.

If you're chasing elite status, or simply want to keep earning airline miles on your flights, you'll likely be better served by the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal rather than transferring.

Bottom line

There are a few scenarios when it makes sense to book your flights through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal instead of transferring points to airline partners:

  • There are no available award seats for your desired travel dates
  • It costs fewer points to book via the Chase portal than transferring to a partner airline
  • A paid fare would earn you a significant number of redeemable miles
  • You're going for elite status and need the credit from your flights

Read our post on Chase Ultimate Rewards sweet spots to get a sense of just how valuable Chase points can be when transferred to airlines. When you see their potential value in comparison to the Chase Travel Portal, you'll better understand why we don't often recommend burning your points in this way. That said, use them in whatever way makes you the happiest. Free travel is all about fulfilling your personal goals.

Using a Credit Card Travel Portal

Using a credit card portal to book travel could help you save money and help you earn more points or redeem travel credits.

Key Takeaways

  • Credit card travel portals search across multiple travel options, giving you the power to compare prices.
  • You can use your credit card or rewards to book travel with your credit card issuer's travel portal.
  • Some cards may offer travel credits and benefits when you book using the associated travel portal.

You have many options for booking travel, whether you want to book directly with airlines and hotels, use an online travel agency or book with your credit card's travel portal. Using a credit card travel portal may allow you to take advantage of cardholder benefits and credits and give you additional choices for your booking.

Understand how to use credit card travel portals to save money on your next trip and maybe get some elevated perks along the way – but also recognize when it doesn't make sense.

What Are Credit Card Travel Portals?

Similar to online travel agencies, such as Expedia or Booking.com, credit card travel portals are online travel booking platforms. Cardholders can use credit card travel portals to browse and book travel options, including flights, hotels, rental cars and experiences using your credit card or rewards.

Credit card travel portals include:

  • American Express Travel.
  • Capital One Travel.
  • Chase Travel.
  • Citi Travel.

Some credit cards offer cardholder savings or perks when you book travel using the issuer's credit card portal, such as travel credits or cardholder privileges, including free breakfast or late checkout.

How Credit Card Travel Portals Stack Up

When you use a credit card travel portal, the amount and method of payment may be the deciding factors in how you book. Using a credit card travel portal to book travel can save you money, but not always.

We compared a midweek economy flight from Los Angeles to New York and a weeklong stay at a three-star hotel in Manhattan. In some cases, credit card travel portals were competitive, but Expedia had the lowest overall price for flight and hotel costs on this test trip.

Still, this is just one example, and travel prices can fluctuate depending on how you book. It's always a good idea to compare all of your options.

Benefits of Credit Card Travel Portals

Booking your travel with a credit card travel portal can help you earn more points or redeem travel credits. Some examples:

  • Cardholders of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card get a $300 annual travel credit for bookings through the Capital One Travel site. When booking on the Capital One Travel site, cardholders earn unlimited 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 miles per dollar on flights. ( See Rates and Fees )
  • With The Platinum Card ® from American Express , cardholders get a $200 annual hotel credit for prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings with American Express Travel and earn five points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel. ( See Rates and Fees )
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card holders get a $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit and earn five points per dollar on Chase Travel purchases.

"Using the travel credits is huge," says JT Genter, editor in chief of rewards and travel tracking tool AwardWallet. "Card issuers are leaning more towards those only being accessible through the portal."

Credit card travel portal bookings may help your points go further, too. "Because I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, when I use the (Chase) portal to book travel, my points get an extra 25% bump," says Chip Chinery, personal finance blogger at Chip's Money Tips. For example, you'd only pay 100,000 points for a flight or hotel that would require 125,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to book without the points boost.

Helpful features can add up to savings on credit card travel portals. For example, Capital One Travel offers a price match guarantee. Genter used the Capital One Travel price match feature on a flight from Cairo to Marrakech, Morocco. Although he booked with Capital One Travel, an online travel agency had a better price. He was able to price match with Capital One Travel to get a travel credit.

Genter points out that cardholders of The Platinum Card from American Express can take advantage of the International Airline Program for potential savings on international flights in first, business or premium economy.

You may also get benefits for booking with credit card travel portals, particularly when booking hotels. For example:

  • Cardholders of The Platinum Card from American Express get elite benefits at participating hotels, including early check-in, room upgrades, breakfast for two, a $100 experience credit, complimentary Wi-Fi and guaranteed 4 p.m. check-out.
  • If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , you can book The Edit properties through Chase Travel and receive benefits, including daily breakfast for two, a $100 on-property credit, room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Drawbacks of Credit Card Travel Portals

Travel credits and on-property perks are compelling reasons to use a credit card travel portal. However, it pays to compare pricing among your card's portal, direct booking or an online travel agency, because the lowest-priced option depends on the trip you're taking. Also, you may forfeit some benefits, as credit card travel portals are third-party bookings.

With a third-party booking, you'll have less flexibility in customer service and cancellation than you would if you booked directly. For example, if you're dealing with a delayed flight and need service from the airline, you may be directed to the travel portal customer service. You may have limited options for cancellation and how you get your money or rewards back.

Another major point to consider with third-party bookings: You generally won't be able to earn points or miles with the airline or hotel, though you can earn points with your card. Additionally, you may not be able to use elite benefits for any status you hold. For example, if you have Hilton Honors status that entitles you to a daily food and beverage credit, you're not likely to get it when you book a stay with your credit card travel portal.

When to Use a Credit Card Travel Portal

Booking travel with a credit card travel portal can make sense in some scenarios. For instance:

  • You want to compare your travel options across multiple airlines or hotels in the portal.
  • You have a travel credit available that can only be redeemed through the issuer's travel portal.
  • You have rewards you want to redeem on the portal, and booking this way offers a good redemption value.
  • You want to take advantage of benefits, such as elite hotel perks that you can get when using a credit card travel portal.
  • Your booking options on the portal are priced lower compared with other options.
  • Booking on the portal earns elevated rewards, and the prices and benefits are comparable to those of other booking options.

"It makes sense if you want to take advantage of the credits but also to earn bonus points," says Genter. "And sometimes, they have promotions such as hyper-targeted offers."
