Flying Pets to the UK

flying pets to the uk

Due to fears of rabies and other animal diseases, the UK has some of the strictest pet quarantine laws in the world. If you are moving a pet to the UK, you will need to get the necessary tests and treatments for your pet, obtain the necessary documentation, and find a reputable transport company. Thanks to the UK Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), your pet will not need to fulfill a six month quarantine period as long as you have fulfilled these requirements. Flight are available from both Larnaca and Paphos to London Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol, Doncaster Glasgow and Edinburgh. A cheaper way of getting your Pet to the UK (from Cyprus for example) is to have it flown to either Brussels, Paris or Amsterdam and have it collected there by a specialized UK Pet Courier such as 101 Pet Express . See Pricing Table.

  • This Table is for general Guidelines Only. All data without guarantee. Please check with the relevant Airline for updated Information

Please note that your pet will need a valid passport, micro-chip and current rabies vaccination. One to three days before the flight the pet will have to visit a vet for a pre-flight check where the vet will check the micro-chip implanted in the pet against that noted in the passport, give a worming tablet and declare that the pet is “able to withstand carriage to its destination”. Your pet will also require an IATA approved travel box , the cost of which is not included in the quoted price.

A Pet Travel Booking Form can be downloaded here. It needs to be completed and returned (emailed to) [email protected] (c/o Christos Agapiou) as soon as possible, to enable the booking and confirm availability.

New rules for pet travel from 1 January 2021

Pet owners will need to follow new requirements before taking their pet to the European Union or Northern Ireland at the end of the transition period.

Ginger cat in a travel crate.

Pet owners are being encouraged to check the latest government advice about travelling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland or the European Union with their pets at the end of the transition period.

The government has worked alongside the European Commission to ensure pet travel can continue between Great Britain and the EU and Northern Ireland at the end of the transition period.

From 1 January 2021 onwards, the UK will have Part 2 listed status under the EU Pet Travel Scheme, meaning that people travelling from GB with their pets and assistance dogs will need to follow new requirements in order to travel to the EU and Northern Ireland.

Before taking their dog, cat or ferret to the EU for the first time after 1 January 2021, pet owners must complete the following steps. The only new requirement for travel to the EU is the use of a certificate, rather than a pet passport:

  • Ensure their dog, cat or ferret is microchipped.
  • Ensure that their dog, cat or ferret is vaccinated against rabies – pets must be at least 12 weeks old before they can be vaccinated.
  • Wait 21 days after the primary vaccination before travel
  • Dogs must be treated against tapeworm 24-120 hours before landing, if they are travelling to a tapeworm free country.
  • Visit their vet to get an animal health certificate (AHC) for their pet, no more than 10 days before travel to the EU.

Pets and assistance dogs will also need to enter the EU through a travellers’ point of entry (TPE) , which includes all the major French ports such as Calais, Caen and Dunkirk.

All of these requirements will also apply for movements of pets and assistance dogs from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. However recognising that these changes will take time to adjust to, the UK Government is working with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) in Northern Ireland on an enforcement approach that takes this challenge into account. This approach will be implemented in a way which supports pet owners and assistance dog users while the Government pursues a permanent solution.

There will be no change to the current health preparations or documents for pets entering Great Britain from the EU or Northern Ireland from 1 January 2021.

Christine Middlemiss, UK Chief Veterinary Officer, said:

We have been granted ‘Part 2’ listed third country status by the EU which will ensure that travelling with your pet continues from 1 January onwards. Your vet will be able to advise what you need to do in order to obtain the correct documentation to travel and you can find the latest pet travel advice on gov.uk or by searching ‘pet travel’.

Updated guidance on pet travel has been available since November 2018, ensuring that owners will be ready for any future scenario, so many pet owners will already be familiar with that they need to do.

The UK government is continuing to press the European Commission to secure Part 1 listed status. The UK has one of the most rigorous pet checking regimes in Europe and currently meets all the requirements for Part 1 listed status under the EU Pet Travel Scheme.

The latest advice for pet owners seeking to travel to the EU after 1 January 2021 can be found here .

Further information

  • Passengers should always check the rules of the country they are travelling to for any additional restrictions or requirements before they travel.
  • For information on commercial imports and exports of dogs, cats and ferrets to the EU – please refer to the Border Operating Model
  • There will be no changes or new requirements on movements from Northern Ireland to Great Britain.
  • There will be no changes to the current health preparations or documents for pets entering Great Britain from the EU in the immediate term, as the disease risks remains unchanged.
  • There are no restrictions on bringing pet rodents, rabbits, birds, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles to the UK from EU countries.
  • Contact the Centre for International Trade (Carlisle) for more information on the rules for travelling with other species of pet.

International Pet Relocation

Cyprus UK pet relocation

About Petravel:

A small company with a big heart.

IMG_1290 (1)_edited.jpg

Welcome to my pet relocation journey! My name is Petra, and I am not only a dog owner but also a devoted animal lover. My own dog holds a special place in my heart, and I cherish her as if she was my own child. Life has taken me on various relocations, and I have faced numerous challenges along the way, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the difficulties, I successfully relocated with my beloved dog multiple times. These experiences not only tested my determination but also rewarded me with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

It was during these journeys that I realized the importance of a reliable and compassionate pet relocation service. I recognized the need to help others navigate the complexities of pet relocation while providing reassurance and support. Driven by my passion for animals and a desire to make a positive impact, I decided to establish a pet relocation service based in Cyprus.

goal is to share my personal story, raise interest, and build trust among fellow pet owners who are seeking a seamless and stress-free relocation experience for their beloved pet.

I understand the worries and anxieties that come with pet relocation, and I am dedicated to prove personalized care, attention to detail, and a high level of service. With my first-hand knowledge and experience, I am committed to ensure the safety, comfort, and well-being of each pet I relocate.

Through my journey, I aim to inspire and empower pet owners to embark on their own successful pet relocation adventures. By sharing my story, I hope to build trust and create a sense of connection with fellow animal lovers, knowing that their pets will be treated with the same love and care that I have for my own furry friend.

Join me on this incredible journey of pet relocation, where we can create memorable and rewarding experiences for both pets and their devoted owners. Together, we can make your pet's relocation a smooth and joyful experience filled with trust, compassion, and peace of mind.

Thank you for considering my services, and I look forward to accompanying you and your furry friend on this exciting new chapter.

pet travel cyprus to uk

IMPORT into the TRNC

  • Your pet will need a current ‘Pet Passport’ with the Rabies vaccination done no less than 30 days prior to entry and no more than 12 months prior to entry. In addition your pet should have a Rabies Serology Titre Test PASS Certificate. Animals must also be vaccinated or given booster vaccinations for other infectious diseases – Dogs: Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospira Cats: Feline enteritis, feline influenza. Since Brexit, Pet Passports are no longer issued in the UK. Alternative documents are accepted, such as a completed vet book. We recommend that your pet’s blood sample for the rabies serology titre test is taken no less than  30 days following the rabies vaccination. Whilst this timescale is not a TRNC entry requirement it will help if you need to return your pet to the EU/UK.
  • Pets should have a health examination 48 hours prior to export and will need a Health Certificate issued by APHA or by the authority in the Country of departure. Your own vet can help you with this.
  • A TRNC issued Import Licence is also needed.

Any pet arriving who does not comply with all of the entry requirements will be subject to TRNC quarantine(at the owners expense)  and the owner may be fined.

EXPORT from the TRNC to UK/Europe

1) Your pet will need the following preparations:-

  • A 15 digit microchip for permanent identification.
  • Rabies Vaccinations
  • At least 30 days from the Rabies Vaccination a blood sample should be taken for the Rabies Serology Titre Test. This needs to be tested by an Approved Laboratory.

2)  After a successful Rabies Serological Test result your pet is permitted to travel 3 months from the date that the blood sample was taken.

3) Health Certificate (including compliance with linked 5 day flight regulation) will need to completed by the TRNC Official Veterinarian.

4) For Dogs – completion of Internal Parasite treatment prior to travel (no less than 24 hours and  no more than 120 hours of arrival in the UK (and some other Countries))

Providing all the entry requirements are met as advised above, then your pet will be allowed to enter the UK/Europe without any quarantine restrictions.

Bringing Pets To Cyprus

img

Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, lies at the intersection between Asia, Europe and Africa. With a pleasant climate and many job opportunities, expats from all over the world consider Cyprus as a desirable destination to relocate to.

Moving abroad can be daunting, especially when do so with pets.

If you are planning to move to Cyprus with pets, we recommend you check out the guide below.

Pet Microchip

Dog and cat with a pet microchip each and a chip scanner scanning them

Every dog/cat that wishes to enter Cyprus, must be individually identified with an electronic microchip. The microchip must comply with the ISO standards 11784 & 11785.

If the microchip doesn’t comply with these standards, the owner or the person responsible, must provide the means necessary for reading the pet’s microchip.

Tattoos are acceptable if they are clearly readable and only if the tattoo was applied before July 3, 2011.

Vaccinations Needed To Bring A Pet To Cyprus

Pet dog getting vaccinated at the vet

All dogs and cats entering Cyprus must be vaccinated against rabies. Unvaccinated pet animals are prohibited from entering Cyprus.

The rabies vaccine should be given after the implantation of the microchip.

In order to get vaccinated, the dog/cat should be at least 12 weeks old.

The rabies vaccine is valid from the establishment of protective immunity, which is at least 21 days from the day the vaccine was given. The vaccine remains valid until the date indicated by the manufacturer of the vaccine.

Boosters must be given before the previous rabies vaccine expires.

Rabies Antibody Titer Test – 3 Months In Advance!

Blood serums for Rabies Titer Test

A rabies antibody titration test must be done in a laboratory approved by the EU, an OIE approved lab. Your pet won’t need to pass a rabies blood test if you are coming from an EU country or a listed country (such as: the UK, the United States, Australia, Canada, Russia and more).

The blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination was given and at least 3 months before entering Cyprus.

In other words, pets can’t enter Cyprus before the blood test is at least 3 months old.

The test result should state that the neutralizing antibody titer is equal to or greater than 0.5 IU/ml.

Health Certificate

Pet Health Certificate need for pet travel

Pets entering Cyprus must be accompanied by an official veterinary health certificate. The health certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue, the date it was signed by a private vet.

The health certificate enables the authorities to clearly identify the pet animal and its health status. This document enables the authorities to check that the regulations have been met.

If you are bringing pets to Cyprus by sea, the health certificate’s validity is extended by an additional period corresponding to the duration of the journey by sea.

Dangerous & Banned Breeds In Cyprus

Dangerous rottweiler showing his teeth

The following breeds and crosses can’t be imported into Cyprus:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Braziliero

If you have a “dangerous” dog, we recommend you read the following article: Flying A Dangerous Dog

Entering Cyprus With A Pet

Cartoon dog flying a plane

Bringing pets to Cyprus can be done in 3 ways: in cabin, as excess baggage and as manifested cargo.

The owner or the person responsible for the pet, must notify the veterinary office at the point of entry at least 48 hours prior to the pet’s arrival.

Upon arrival, pets will be inspected by a veterinary officer or by a customs officer on duty.

Quarantine In Cyprus

Dogs in quarantine

There is no mandatory quarantine in Cyprus.

If the import requirements can’t be met, pet owners may ask the authorities for a special permit to bring their pet into Cyprus before completing the process.

In some cases, such a request will be approved by the authorities.

What to consider when bringing your pet to Cyprus

When flying pets to Cyprus, you can rest assured that you’re in good hands. We’re IPATA certified, so we can provide expert and trustworthy advice when it comes to shipping your pet.

Before arranging your pet’s transportation, it’s important to ensure that your pet has been microchipped. For a microchip to be accepted within Cyprus, you must check whether it complies with ISO standards 11784 & 11785. Secondly, unvaccinated pets are prohibited from entering Cyprus, regardless of their country of origin. Therefore, this should be at the top of your list of things to check before arranging pet travel.

Dogs and cats travel between UK and Europe all the time and as Europe has fewer cases of rabies now than 30 years ago, it is a welcome treat that pets can travel so easily.

As of January 1st 2021 there have been some changes to the requirement for European pet travel, read more about these here .

Step 1:  Your dog or cat needs a microchip.

Step 2: They then need a rabies vaccination. They must be at least 3 months old before they have this. Some rabies vaccines in the UK last for 3 years and others will last for 3 years but need a top up after one year, so you need to know when the vaccine expires.

Step 3: Your vet issues you with a pet passport to confirm the date the rabies vaccine was administered. The pet passport is no longer a sufficient document for travel.

Step 4: If your pet is travelling by plane, then the airlines demand that they are checked within 10 days of the flight to ensure that they are fit and healthy

PetAir UK is run and owned by vets, so we are perfectly placed to help you with all aspects of any journey to Europe. European countries no longer accept the pet passport, and some European countries have extra rules for pet travel:

Cyprus and Greece ask that dogs and cats travelling there are treated against ticks and tapeworms 24-48 hours before they check in for their flight.

Switzerland is in Europe but not in the EU, so the Swiss have similar rules for the importation of pets to the rest of Europe, but they will not allow dogs with docked tails into the country.

Sweden class imports of dogs and cats into as commercial or non-commercial depending if the owner is on the same plane entering Sweden or not. The rules for entry are very different. Non-commercial imports of dogs and cats into Sweden are relatively simple, but require the owner to be on the same plane. Commercial imports are much more complicated and require TRACES and BALAI certification. So usually, it makes sense from a cost and simplicity point of view for the owner to fly back to UK and then fly back to Sweden on the same plane – PetAir UK can help arrange this. Often the owners don’t see the pets in UK, as they fly back and then immediately out to Sweden again. PetAir UK ensures that the pets are on the same plane as the owner leaving UK.

If you have not owned your pet for more than 6 months, your pet is under 6 months old, you are changing ownership (i.e. if you are rescuing an animal from abroad) or you cannot travel within 5 days either side of your pets movement, then please do contact us  for further information.

Flying pets to Europe is both simple and tricky. The veterinary requirements are simple, but the logistics and planning can be complicated, as many European airports only accept pets landing at certain times, so the number of flights PetAir UK can use to fly your dog or cat to Europe are limited. Also, the planes used for travel from the UK to Europe are often smaller, and so larger dogs can only travel on certain flights.

At PetAir UK, we’re very experienced at flying pets to Europe and we can plan around all the little rules and regulations to ensure your pets travel comfortably and safely.
