Last weekend, Guyer High School (Texas) five-star safety and Notre Dame pledge Peyton Bowen took a visit to the University of Oregon.

At the very least, it turns out, Oregon made an impression.

During Guyer's 42-21 win over McKinney on Thursday night, Bowen wore an Oregon headband:

On the field, he also made a splash, returning the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown:

The 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back is ranked a five-star prospect , the nation's No. 24 overall prospect and No. 2 safety.

While Bowen is verbally committed to Notre Dame, both Oklahoma and Oregon have made a major push and his commitment is anything but solid.

Here's what 247Sports had to say about Bowen as a prospect (in part):

"Owns the requisite height and frame with an athletic build. Versatile playmaker for high-caliber Texas Class 6A power. Ample snaps in all three phases at receiver, multiple spots in the secondary, and kick/punt returner. Excellent ball skills. That combines with awareness and instincts to create a ball-productive playmaker. Shows route-running acumen and hands-catching technique at receiver. Also displays terrific body control and adjustment abilities in contested situations. Sudden athlete with lateral mobility and great initial burst and acceleration. Dangerous as a center fielder thanks to ability to cover territory and make plays on the ball. Shows functional athleticism to man up when needed. Turns and locates very well. Outstanding tester."

Five-star safety Peyton Bowen flips, signs with Oklahoma 1 day after committing to Oregon

Five-star safety Peyton Bowen flipped his commitment again, stating his intention to sign with Oklahoma one day after he chose Oregon . Here’s what you need to know:

  • Bowen initially committed to Notre Dame on Jan. 1, but he changed his mind and went with the Ducks on Wednesday. Oklahoma was among the other schools he considered ahead of the early signing period.
  • Bowen, who played at Denton (Texas) Guyer, is ranked No. 14 overall and the No. 2 safety in the 247Sports Composite.

When he committed to Notre Dame on New Year’s Day, Bowen did it over an offer list that included Alabama , LSU , USC , Ohio State and Michigan . Because Oklahoma coach Brent Venables didn’t offer while he was the defensive coordinator at Clemson , Bowen interpreted that as meaning the OU offer he had gotten from Lincoln Riley’s staff was invalid.

Then, a week after committing to Notre Dame, Bowen got a call from the new Oklahoma safeties coach Brandon Hall that, actually, the Sooners’ offer still stood. And the Sooners remained a threat throughout this recruitment even while Bowen remained committed to Notre Dame. — Sampson

Bowen’s high school coach, Reed Heim, previously told The Athletic what the safety brings to his team.

“He is the only guy on our defense that can play every single secondary position on the field,” Heim said. “You can line him up at corner. He will be 100 percent fine. You can line him up at nickel, he can get off a receiver’s block.

“When you game plan for a player or a scheme where you need a guy with exceptional skills, I’m always designing it around how do we use Peyton Bowen to take somebody away or to fit how we are going to stop this upcoming team. He’s always the guy I work with first.”

What Bowen said

Bowen explained in a statement on Twitter what led to his decision to commit to Oklahoma.

“As I reflect on yesterday’s whirlwind, I recognize that I made some mistakes that I regret and will learn from,” Bowen said. “Navigating this process has been a rollercoaster. … Soon after choosing Oregon yesterday morning, I came to the realization that the decision was not the best path for me. I immediately started to rethink my future.”

Bowen added: “Oklahoma has always felt like home to me. … My relationships with Coach Venables, Coach Bates, Coach Valai, Coach Hall and Coach Chavis, along with my ties to family and friends locally ultimately led me back to where I always belonged. Oregon and Notre Dame faithful, I am sorry for how I handled this process.”

In a shocking but not shocking move, 5-Star safety Peyton Bowen has flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to the Oregon Ducks , and signed his NLI to play in Eugene.

Bowen has been a player out looking/shopping around for many many months. Most insiders over the past 6 months felt that ultimately Bowen would join his best friend Jackson Arnold in Norman to play for the Oklahoma Sooners .

That Sooner bound narrative took a massive turn a few weeks ago with the Oregon Ducks and Phil Knight’s checkbook (or whatever) came swooping in to entice the phenomenal Bowen. Peyton cancelled a trip to Eugene last weekend, and it seemed as if he was really settled in on Notre Dame and Oklahoma. Even throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the momentum for Notre Dame was something that recruiting insiders kept putting out there.

In an announcement ceremony, Bowen did the hat trick on the table and put on the Oregon hat to the surprise of many. Welcome to the new age of college football recruiting. It was fun having him committed for 11 months though...

BREAKING: 5-star Peyton Bowen flips to Oklahoma, retracting Oregon commitment

For as high as the Oregon fanbase was when 5-star safety Peyton Bowen announced his commitment to Dan Lanning and the Ducks on Wednesday morning, flipping from Notre Dame, that’s probably as low as they feel right now.

Bowen announced on Thursday that he plans to sign with the Oklahoma Sooners , going back on his commitment to Oregon and choosing a team who didn’t seem to even be among his final two options at his commitment announcement. When Bowen made his decision on Wednesday, there were two hats on the table for him to choose from; Notre Dame and Oregon. While Oklahoma was pushing hard for him down the stretch, it had appeared that they fell out of the running.

In the end, the Sooners got the last laugh.

Concerns of this being the case started to come out on Wednesday afternoon when Bowen’s letter or intent had failed to make its way to Eugene a few hours after the commitment. As fans continued to wait for the official announcement that Bowen had signed with Oregon, concern grew at a rapid rate.

Multiple reports throughout the evening showed that Bowen was potentially still weighing his options, and in the end it appears that he had a change of heart and ended up going with Brent Venables and the Sooners, staying close to home.

This is a tough blow for Dan Lanning and his squad, who otherwise won the day in the recruiting world on Wednesday.

A Notre Dame hat sat on the left. An Oregon one to the right. In between was a silver Denton Guyer football helmet.

It was underneath that helmet at Peyton Bowen’s signing day ceremony on Wednesday that Oklahoma fans invested their hopes and dreams. Seriously, look at these social media comments directed toward a photo of Bowen’s signing day setup.

“There’s gotta be an Oklahoma hat,” one person tweeted.

“OU hat under the helmet,” another said.

“What hat is under the helmet?” a curious observer asked.

There was nothing underneath the helmet except for a black tablecloth, and of the two hats placed on Bowen’s head during his ceremony, neither was crimson. And yet, the starving Sooners fans still managed to get their wish.

Bowen, a five-star, blue-chip Denton Guyer safety, is officially headed to Oklahoma one day after he seemingly signed with Oregon. Bowen announced his OU signing on Instagram and Twitter on Thursday afternoon, and the Oklahoma football Twitter account followed with its own post.

“Oklahoma has always felt like home to me,” Bowen said in a social media post. “Reflecting, it seems as if I was always looking for a reason to branch out and break away from home. But my relationships with Coach Venables, Coach Bates, Coach Valai, Coach Hall and Coach Chavis, along with my ties to friends and family locally ultimately led me back to where I belonged.”

Bowen signed a letter of intent on Wednesday at an Italian restaurant in the Denton area, but apparently never sent it in. The News was the only media outlet in attendance and saw Bowen sign a letter. Guyer coach Reid Heim also told The News that he saw it, too. But a signed letter of intent doesn’t mean much if it isn’t sent to the school.

Hours after Bowen’s ceremony, reports circulated that Oregon hadn’t received his letter of intent. Nick Harris of Rivals.com first reported Thursday morning that Bowen looked like he was headed to Oklahoma, and a person close to the Guyer football team confirmed to The News on Thursday that Oklahoma appeared to be Bowen’s final destination.

While the news of Bowen’s signing did not officially break until later Thursday afternoon, members of Oklahoma’s coaching staff — including head coach Brent Venables and co-defensive coordinator Jay Valai — had spent the day posting cryptic memes and gifs, which added to the spectacle. Guyer quarterback Jackson Arnold, a five-star recruit and Oklahoma signee, tweeted a fist-pumping GIF at 1:23 p.m.

pic.twitter.com/6vkhuuZUnN — Jackson Arnold (@_JacksonArnold_) December 22, 2022

Arnold, who committed to Oklahoma in January , had long tried to recruit Bowen (as well as high school teammate Ryan Yaites, an LSU signee) to Norman, and had even started a hashtag “#DENTON2NORMAN” on Twitter. Jackson and Bowen are the No. 2 and No. 3 recruits respectively on The News’ top 100 area recruits list for the class of 2023. 247Sports.com ranks Arnold as the No. 7 recruit in the country and Bowen as No. 14.

The 6-0, 185 pound safety had been committed to Notre Dame since January, but Heim told The News before signing day that Oklahoma and Oregon had entered the mix.

An Oklahoma hat literally wasn’t on the table when Bowen made his choice. He picked up the Notre Dame hat, put it on and then did a fake out and chose the Oregon cap instead. His mom, Amy, told The News on Wednesday that Bowen had narrowed his list down to Oregon and Notre Dame on Tuesday night, and that the decision had been weighing on him for weeks.

“Oregon and Notre Dame faithful, I am sorry for how I handled this process,” Bowen said in his social media post. “Changing my decision on signing day, the hat pump fake, all of it could have been handled better.”

The choice was the talk of recruiting Twitter for a couple of hours, with college football fans meticulously picking apart The News’ video, pointing to the reaction of family members when it was clear something might be afoot.

Bowen said he picked Oregon moments before he announced the Wednesday decision.

“Honestly, like right over there ,” Bowen said Wednesday, pointing to a beige wall inside Genti’s Ristorante Italiano, a popular Bowen family eatery.

Bowen was named the all-area utility player of the year as a junior byi The News after he scored seven touchdowns — one on defense, three on kickoff/punt returns and three as a receiver — and intercepted six passes for the 6A Division II state finalists. In his last two seasons at Guyer, Bowen totaled eight kick/punt return touchdowns, three defensive touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns. His team went 28-3 in his junior and senior seasons.

Bowen’s younger brother Eli, a four-star junior cornerback, holds a scholarship offer from Oklahoma. Peyton Bowen said at Wednesday’s signing day that he’d be recruiting his brother to Oregon. Given the flip to Oklahoma, expect the Bowen-on-Bowen recruitment to continue, but this time to Norman.

He joins an Oklahoma recruiting class that ranked seventh in the nation before his signing, and is the fourth Dallas-area prospect to pick the Sooners. Arnold, Crandall four-star linebacker Samuel Omosigho and Denton Ryan running back Kalib Hicks are the others.

If there’s one thing that the uber-athletic Bowen did best in his time on the field at Guyer, it was captivate the attention of others.

His signing day saga — which included three different commitments in a 24-hour span, two flips and a hat fake — proved to be no different.

Five-star safety Peyton Bowen flips again, now off to Oklahoma

peyton bowen oregon visit

A day after flipping his commitment from Notre Dame to Oregon , five-star safety Peyton Bowen shocked the recruiting world by signing with Oklahoma on Thursday.

Bowen, the No. 14 overall recruit and No. 2 safety in the 2023 ESPN 300 , is the highest-ranked defensive player to sign with Oklahoma since ESPN began ranking recruits in 2006.

"As I reflect on yesterday's whirlwind I recognize I made some mistakes that I regret and will learn from," he wrote on Twitter. "Navigating this process has been a rollercoaster."

Respect my Decision just want peace for me and my family Boomer Sooner ⭕️U!! pic.twitter.com/ERfET7lIyG — Peyton Bowen (@PeytonBowen10) December 22, 2022

Brent Venables' first full recruiting class as Oklahoma's head coach entered signing day ranked No. 5 and improved to No. 4 upon Bowen decommitting from Notre Dame. (The Irish fell to seventh.) The 6-0, 195-pound Bowen becomes the second five-star recruit for the Sooners, joining his John Guyer High School (Texas) teammate Jackson Arnold , the No. 8 overall recruit and No. 1 dual-threat quarterback. Bowen and Arnold helped lead the Wildcats to a 14-1 record, with their only loss coming to DeSoto (Texas) High School in a Class 6A Division II state semifinal Dec. 10. Bowen had originally committed to Notre Dame on Jan. 1 but flipped to Oregon on the first day of the early signing period.

He's the second five-star prospect to decommit from Oregon this week, as No. 3 quarterback Dante Moore flipped to UCLA on Monday.

Still, coach Dan Lanning and Oregon still had quite a productive early signing period.

The Ducks signed defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei (No. 65 overall in 2023), brother of former Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei , and flipped three key players: cornerback Daylen Austin (No. 142 overall in 2023) from LSU , quarterback Austin Novosad (No. 270 overall in 2023) from Baylor and running back Jayden Limar from Notre Dame .

The Ducks entered the day ranked 14th and ended it in the top five. Without Bowen, though, they will move down.

Oklahoma, Notre Dame or Someone Else? Has 5-Star DB Peyton Bowen Made Up His Mind?

  • Author: John E. Hoover

In this story:

Oklahoma Sooners

NORMAN — Maybe Peyton Bowen really doesn’t know what he wants to do. Maybe he does and and he’s just being respectful to the recruiting process. Or maybe he’s already firmly made up his mind and he’s just letting it all play out.

Whatever the prized Texas high school recruit decides — or has decided — should be revealed soon. Wednesday is the first day of the early signing period — National Signing Day. Will Bowen remain committed to Notre Dame? Will he flip to Oklahoma ? Or will he flip to Texas A&M?

It’s been in the recruiting ether for months now, and as of Monday, there were few real indicators that he had decided one way or another.

Reed Heim is Bowen’s high school football coach at Guyer High School in Denton, TX, and Heim has a theory.

“In my opinion, the longer that he stays committed to Notre Dame — every second that he stays committed to Notre Dame — I think his chances of going to Notre Dame are going up,” Heim told AllSooners on Monday. “Because he already made that decision a long time ago. So it's the easiest thing for him to do, is just stick with it.”

Bowen had an official visit scheduled to Oregon this past weekend, but he canceled it. He had also been considering taking an official to Oklahoma. That didn’t happen.

Texas A&M, with its seemingly unlimited resources, has been recruiting him hard. He’s been verbally committed to the Fighting Irish since Jan. 1, but he’s been pulled by OU for about that long, as best friend and Guyer 5-star quarterback Jackson Arnold committed to the Sooners on Jan. 24.

Bottom line: Bowen is torn.

“Very difficult,” Heim said. “I think that it's one of those things where he really enjoyed the recruiting process — you know, as far as listening to everybody, seeing what everybody has to say and offer and all these things. And so the good thing about that is that it's really allowed a couple of the really big-time programs to kind of rise to the top.”

Bowen is the No. 3 overall player in Texas and the No. 2 safety in the nation, according to 247 Sports. The 6-foot, 190-pound senior also has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas and USC.

Bowen reportedly had several in-home visits last week, including head coaches from Oregon, Notre Dame and Oklahoma on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, respectively.

“I was trending, honestly, toward Oregon,” Heim said, “and then he didn't go. And so I'm turning back to Notre Dame. I'm not saying he ain’t gonna go to OU. But if you're gonna ask me right now, I'd say Notre Dame.

“But I may be flat-ass wrong.”

Although 247 Sports national director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong offered his official prediction — a “crystal ball” — that Bowen would flip to OU (247 Sports reports that Wiltfong’s predictions are correct more than 91 percent of the time), there’s still a long way to go.

Bowen has been radio silent.

Heim suggests those hanging on every morsel of information swirling around Bowen might have to wait a little longer than Wednesday.

“Now, the other thing,” Heim said, “is that on Wednesday morning, when he gets a paper from OU, Oregon, Notre Dame and Texas A&M — he just signs one of them and then he’s done. He doesn't have to tell anybody. He just has to sign a piece of paper.

“I will say that the longer you wait and the more you hear, I think sometimes it makes your decision-making process harder. And then you combine that with the ability for some teams to throw around — whether they're real, imaginary or whatever — but to throw around some dollar figure amounts and the NIL piece, I think that makes it — that adds mud to the water, and it makes it a very difficult decision to make for a kid that's just turned 18.

"I think it's hard.”
