Rory McIlroy “carries” Shane Lowry to 25th PGA Tour win at Zurich Classic

The PGA Tour is in New Orleans this week for the only team event on tour, the Zurich Classic.

Despite a tumultuous round by Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry , the Irish duo came out on top in a playoff over Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey.

It is McIlroy’s 25th career victory on the PGA Tour . Lowry notched his third and his first since winning The Open in 2019. But it was the former that did most of the heavy lifting.

“Let’s go and get 400 [FedEx Cup] points each. That’s what we’ve done, and I nearly feel a little bit bad taking them because Rory carried me a lot of the way,” Lowry said with a smile after the win.

Nearly three hours before the 72nd hole had been played by all teams, Trainer and Ramey entered the clubhouse at 25-under par. A number of pairs were already at or just below that number with practically an entire round to play.

Yet, windy conditions made scoring very difficult as no one would finish any lower.

A bogey on 17 for McIlroy and Lowry dropped them one shot off the pace. But the Northern Irishman made up for it on 18 with a fantastic chip . That set up a short birdie putt, which Lowry drained to get into the playoff.

In the playoff, Ramey and Trainer’s rust showed. Two hours and 54 minutes after they finished their round, Trainer’s tee shot missed the fairway left. Despite getting a clean lie just short of the fairway bunker, Ramey yanked his 3-wood well left of the green.

Meanwhile, McIlroy’s tee shot found the fairway. Lowry’s approach came up just short, nestling into the greenside bunker. But they were still in decent shape.

Trainer chunked his third and Ramey chipped up near the hole, leaving a makable 5-footer for par.

McIlroy hit a decent bunker shot, which left his fellow Irishman with 10 feet for the win. But just like much of the week, Lowry’s putter failed him. He missed the putt just above the hole and it appeared as though a massive opportunity slipped away.

Moments later though, Trainer inexplicably missed his short par putt, sealing the victory for McIlroy and Lowry.

“Absolutely amazing. We’ve had an awesome week here in New Orleans. The crowds all week have been absolutely amazing. To get the support that we’ve had out there and to have so much fun while doing it, it’s been an awesome week, and obviously I feel like it’s just a bonus to win at the end,” McIlroy said.

“But couldn’t be better to have this man alongside me to get a PGA Tour win together.”

It likely was not the way they envisioned winning, but a victory is a victory, however it comes.

This was McIlroy’s first time playing in this event. He had such a great time and received such a warm welcome, that he already let everyone know his future plans.

“I’d say we’re going to come back and defend next year.”

In a much-needed boost, Lowry and McIlroy jumped to 12th and 15th respectively on the FedEx Cup points list with the win.

PGA: THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson - Final Round, Taylor Pendrith, Mitchell Theoret

Taylor Pendrith finally won his first PGA Tour event Sunday at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson after 74 professional starts.

As he came down the stretch, his former Kent State teammate and fellow Canadian, Mackenzie Hughes, carried around three beers , ensuring he did not miss the winning moment.

The PGA Tour social team followed him as he dipped under the ropes on the 18th green, waiting for his friend to finish.

Hughes asked CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis, “How close is Taylor?”

“It’s a tap-in,” she responded.

Pendrith’s wife approached Hughes, and he said, “I should have brought you one,” as they hugged in celebration.

The Canadian finally acknowledged the camera and said, “He’s going to get a little wet.”

Hughes snuck around trying to surprise Pendrith after he sank the winning putt. As Pendrith celebrated with his wife and son, Hughes snuck up behind him and gave him a Miller Lite shower down his back.

After he doused Pendrith, the camera cuts to his caddie, Hughes, and his wife raising their glasses to his win.

It was a big moment for Pendrith as he became the latest Canadian to win on the PGA Tour. The 32-year-old has not had the strongest year. Pendrith has also fought a shoulder injury , but the last two weeks saw his game trend in the right direction.

He and Hughes partnered at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week and tied for 11th. The week before that, he finished T11 at the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Now, Pendrith will play in his first Signature Event of the year, the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hallow.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: Our long-shot pick eyes his second PGA Tour win

C.T. Pan is our long-shot pick to win in Texas.

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

The PGA Tour returns to Texas and to a traditional tournament format with this week’s 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and we’re picking a long shot who nearly took home the title last year. Here’s our long-shot pick, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, betting favorites and everything else you need to know.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: Long-shot bet

For this week’s newly named CJ Cup Byron Nelson, we’re picking PGA Tour veteran C.T. Pan to beat the odds and come out on top. Pan’s odds to win to start the week sit at +10000.

Pan is a former top-50 golfer in the world, capable of winning any time he tees it up. He proved that at the 2019 RBC Heritage , which he won to earn his only Tour victory.

Tiger Woods reacts to his shot at the Masters

Tour Confidential: U.S. Ryder Cup captain, PGA Tour payouts, Zurich format

So far this season, Pan has only managed one top 10, but it was a good one: a T3-finish at the Mexico Open. Most intriguingly for our purposes is the fact that Pan finished solo 4th at last year’s Byron Nelson, just two shots short of winner Jason Day’s 23-under total.

If you put $10 on Pan to win and he comes through, you’ll earn $1,000. For insurance, consider placing additional small bets on Pan to finish top 10 and top 20.

Looking for more long-shot bets for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson? This week’s honorable mentions are Adam Schenk (+5000) and Kevin Yu (+9000).

CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: The favorites

Leading the Byron Nelson field as the pre-tournament betting favorite is three-time major champion Jordan Spieth , who comes into the week with +1400 odds.

He’s followed by Alex Noren at +1800, and three players are tied at +2000, including Adam Scott , Si Woo Kim and defending champion Jason Day .

You can see the top 15 in CJ Cup Byron Nelson betting odds as of Monday morning below or head over to BetMGM to see the full list of odds and bets for this week.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the wells fargo championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

pga golf tour this week

If Wyndham Clark finishes on top of the leaderboard this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, he'll become the first golfer to win this event in back-to-back years. Clark will have to stave off several serious contenders if he wants to rewrite the history books. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Max Homa are among the experienced players looking to dethrone Clark and win the Wells Fargo Championship 2024.

Play gets underway from Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club on Thursday, May 9. McIlroy enters this week's event as the 13-2 favorite according to the latest 2024 Wells Fargo Championship odds. He's followed by Schauffele (9-1) and Clark (14-1) on the PGA odds board. Ludvig Aberg (knee) has withdrawn from this tournament. Before locking in your 2024 Wells Fargo Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Wells Fargo Championship 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Wells Fargo Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Wells Fargo Championship 2024: Wyndham Clark, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and barely cracks the top 10. Clark has been playing extremely well in 2024, securing one win and two runner-up finishes.

However, Clark has finished T-31 or worse in two of his last three starts on the PGA Tour, which includes a missed cut at the Masters. He's also struggled with accuracy off the tee this season. The 30-year-old enters this week's event ranked 111th in driving accuracy (60.10%). Quail Hollow puts a premium on positioning off the tee, which doesn't bode well for Clark's chances to repeat as champion.

Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

In order to score well at Quail Hollow, players will need to consistently drain putts and few do it better than Morikawa. In fact, the 27-year-old enters this week's event ranked 12th in one-putt percentage (44.27%), 12th in putts per round (28.00) and 18th in putting average (1.717). He also ranks fourth in driving accuracy (78.53%) and 15th in birdie average (4.42). Those impressive statistics make Morikawa a longshot worth backing this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Wells Fargo Championship picks

The model is also targeting five other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? PGA Championship: Will Masters winner Scottie Scheffler play in 2024's second major?

pga golf tour this week

Scottie Scheffler is the world's best golfer, and it's not particularly close. As Mugatu would say, "He's so hot right now."

He's less than one month removed from winning his second Masters Tournament and has been atop the World Golf Rankings for 51 consecutive weeks. All that said, Scheffler is not unbeatable right now. How do you beat him? Hope he doesn't show up.

That has been a legitimate strategy as of late as Scheffler is still waiting for his wife, Meredith, to deliver their first child. Already, we know that Scheffler will not participate in this weekend's Wells Fargo Championship .

With the PGA Championship just two weeks away, there is thought that Scheffler could miss 2024's second major. Here are the latest rumors surrounding Scheffler's status for May 16.

PGA Tour: Full event schedule for 2024

Scottie Scheffler: Timeline of wife's pregnancy

Golf fans may already be aware that the birth of Scheffler's son was already a topic for Scheffler's availability during the 2024 Masters. The couple's first child was reportedly expected in late April . If that were the case, we are likely well-beyond a week past the original due date. Of course, that is all under the assumption that the due date was in fact in late April.

Scheffler's 2024 tournament appearances

Scheffler has made ten appearances in 2024, and has really kicked his game to another gear in his last five appearances, racking up four wins and a second-place finish. Those four wins came at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, the RBC Heritage Classic, and of course, the 2024 Masters.

Scheffler may be a little out of practice going into the PGA Championship though if he chooses to play. He has not played in a sanctioned event in three weeks. The anticipation of the birth of his first child isn't keeping him off the links entirely though. Earlier this week, Scheffler was seen playing a round with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Scheffler allegedly shot a 67 in wet conditions. Clearly, his game has not taken any hits as of late.

What are Scheffler's odds to win the 2024 PGA Championship?

Despite Scheffler potentially missing the event, BetMGM lists Scheffler as the favorite to win the major. He currently sits at +350 odds. The next best odds belong to Rory McIlroy (+1200) and Brooks Koepka (+1400).

When is the 2024 PGA Championship?

Round 1 of the PGA Championship will be on May 16. The tournament will run through May 19.

LIV’s Talor Gooch receives special invitation to PGA Championship

For the first time since the onset of the PGA Tour-LIV Golf divide, a LIV golfer has been awarded a position in a major championship due primarily to his performance on the 54-hole team-format tour.

Talor Gooch, who joined the Saudi-backed Tour in May 2022, announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the PGA of America has extended a special invitation to compete in next week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. The PGA of America also extended an invitation to LIV’s David Puig, the 22-year-old Arizona State product who recently won the Malaysian Open and qualified for the Open Championship.

“Looking forward to Valhalla next week!” Gooch wrote on X. “Thank you for the invitation PGA. See ya’ll there.”

The PGA of America (the governing body of the PGA Championship) traditionally invites the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 100 players to compete at the PGA. Gooch is currently ranked No. 644, while Puig is No. 106. LIV Golf tournaments are not recognized in the ranking system, and Gooch only teed it up in only six OWGR-official events since joining LIV. However, after leaving the PGA Tour , Gooch won three times on LIV and finished as the league’s 2023 individual champion. His sole PGA Tour victory came at the 2021 RSM Classic, six months before joining the upstart league.

LIV’s Joaquin Niemann notably received a special invitation to the Masters last month, but the Chilean intentionally traveled around the world to play in tournaments outside of LIV Golf and earn his place in the majors. Niemann won the Australian Open in December and placed in the top five in three DP World Tour events. Gooch, however, has not made the same effort. He played in the Hong Kong Open in November and the Saudi International last winter, but other than those two starts, the 32-year-old has not played outside of LIV. Gooch’s invitation to the PGA Championship indicates that the tournament’s organizers recognize his performance on the Saudi-backed tour.

Gooch has been especially outspoken about his exclusion from major championships. He was eligible for the Masters, the PGA Championship and the Open Championship last season due to his PGA Tour performance before joining LIV. But the USGA changed its eligibility rules and Gooch could not tee it up at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023 for the U.S. Open.

In a news conference last week in Singapore, Gooch announced that he would not attempt to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Open, despite 35 LIV players trying their hand at final qualifying in the coming weeks.

“I’m not,” Gooch said when asked if he would be qualifying. He did not offer further explanation.

Gooch also garnered attention when he said that if Rory McIlroy were to have completed the career grand slam at the Masters, the accolade would have needed an “asterisk” due to the absence of LIV players from the field. Yet 13 LIV golfers teed it up at Augusta this year.

The full PGA Championship field list has not been released. Brooks Koepka, the defending champion, is a LIV member and hoisted the individual trophy at LIV Singapore last week.

Kris Kim, 16, shoots 68 in PGA TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Change Text Size

McKINNEY, Texas – 16-year-old Kris Kim received sound advice before his PGA TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on Thursday morning.

“At the end of the day, it's just hitting a golf ball around, and then whatever you shoot, whatever you shoot,” Kim’s mom Ji-Hyun Suh, a former LPGA player in the 1990s, told her teenage son.

The accomplishment for the week would be the experience gained for Kim – process over results. But Kim can be proud of the results, too. The English amateur shot a first-round 68 with two chip-ins, beating the field average and setting himself up with a chance to make the cut.

Kim would be the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA TOUR event since Kyle Suppa, 16, made the cut at the 2015 Sony Open in Hawaii.

What’s in Kris Kim’s bag?

“I would say it was pretty good,” Kim said of his 68 at TPC Craig Ranch. “Conditions out there were pretty easy today, especially with the greens having a bit of rain. But, yeah, I would say 3-under I would definitely take.”

Kim opened with a par on the 10th, his first hole of the day, then birdied the 11th, holing a 15-footer. That calmed the nerves, which Kim admitted were “pretty high.” After bogeys on 12 and 15, Kim chipped in for birdie on 16 and birdied the par-5 18th to make the turn in 1-under 34. He offset two bogeys on the inward nine with a pair of birdies, then chipped in again on the par-5 ninth, hooping his pitch from 67 feet away for eagle.

16-year-old Kris Kim eagles final hole to shoot 68 at THE CJ CUP

“I would say short game is my strength, but just got lucky a bit today,” Kim said.

Kim bested Russell 5&4 in a singles match last fall in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup. While Russell has gained notoriety as the No. 1 junior in the world, Kim’s resume is littered with accomplishments, too.

In 2023, Kim won the Boys’ Amateur Championship, the European Boys’ Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy. He is the first amateur golfer to be sponsored by CJ Group, which sponsors numerous pro golfers, including Sungjae Im, Si Woo Kim, K.H. Lee and Byeong Hun An. Kim is the first European amateur to sign an NIL contract with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign an NIL deal with TaylorMade. He went undefeated in the Junior Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, claiming 3.5 points as Europe won the event for the first time since 2006.

Kim could do one better than Russell if he makes the cut this week in a PGA TOUR event. With an abundance of low scores, it will take another round like Thursday’s for Kim to make it a reality.
