2022 Tour Championship money: Purse, winner’s share, prize money payout

pga tour champions winners purse

The 2022 Tour Championship prize money payout is from the $57.925 million purse, with 29 professional players who complete four rounds at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., (and Will Zalatoris ) earning an official-money paycheck this week.

The winner's share of Tour Championship prize pool is at $18,000,000, with the second-place finisher taking home $6,500,000. The Tour Championship prize money payout breakdown shows a payout of 18 percent of the purse to the winner, and how much each PGA Tour player earns is guaranteed down to the last-place player, who gets $500,000.

The Tour Championship field is headed by Scottie Scheffler , Xander Schauffele , Patrick Cantlay , Rory McIlroy and more.

This tournament started with 29 players, and a cut was not made this week after two rounds. Every professional player in the field is paid for completing the event, but how much each player is paid at the 2022 Tour Championship from the correct 2022 Tour Championship full-field payout is based on their finish, including starting strokes.

pga tour champions winners purse

The 36-hole cut was not made to the top 65 players and ties, but there was one pre-tournament withdrawal (Will Zalatoris). The 29 remaining players have an opportunity to move up the leaderboard in the final round.

The 2022 Tour Championship prize money payout is only true after the PGA Tour cut is made, with the PGA Tour modifying the payout if more than 65 professionals start a no-cut event to ensure all players are paid.

With the PGA Tour cut rule down to the top 65 and ties, no players are subject to the PGA Tour's secondary cut any longer.

What else is on the line

Beyond money, there are important points, perks and benefits on the line for the field -- in particular, the tournament winner.

The winner of this event will win the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour's season-long points race.

Additionally, there are approximately 38 Official World Golf Ranking points on the line for the winner.

While this event offers a significant payday, a win comes with the benefits that come with winning on the PGA Tour. Winners of this event gets a five-plus season exemption on the PGA Tour, entries into the Masters, PGA Championship and The Players, and entry into the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

PGA Tour purses skyrocket; Korn Ferry Tour money is better; But what about PGA Tour Champions?

The highest purse is $4 million for the u.s. senior open. the winner of next year's players championship will win $500,000 more..

pga tour champions winners purse

In August, the PGA Tour announced its series of 13 events — including The Players Championship — that will offer purse increases of nearly $100 million for the 2023 season, plus a doubling of the Player Impact Program to $100 million.

The Korn Ferry Tour had previously announced in 2021 that its purses will increase to $1 million for each regular-season event (up from $600,000 for most tournaments) and $1.5 million for the four-event Korn Ferry Finals.

More Furyk & Friends coverage

  • Gene Frenette: Maybe playing his old home course will bring spark to David Duval's game
  • Miguel Angel Jimenez, 'golf's most interesting man,' returns to Timuquana still hungry to win
  • Constellation Furyk & Friends: How to get there, how to watch

In between is the PGA Tour Champions, whose average purse this season of $2.1 million is only $600,000 more than the Korn Ferry Finals. There will be modest gains next year to an average of $2.3 million but only nine of the 27 events will offer bumps and at this point, the Constellation Furyk & Friends, being played this week at the Timuquana Country Club, may not be one of them.

So while PGA Tour players will have a chance to compete for first-place checks of up to $4.5 million for winning The Players (which exceeds the total purse for every PGA Tour Champions event), and Korn Ferry Tour players can make $180,000 for winning a regular-season event (nearly double the amount from most regular-season events in 2019), why aren’t Champions Tour earnings increasing at a fast pace than the projected 10 percent for next season?

The answer reflects the reality of the economics: Champions Tour purses are more dependent on title sponsorship contracts than TV money and it’s a tour financially supported by the PGA Tour anyway.

And with the PGA Tour tapping into its reserves and asking for more help from its title sponsors in response to the LIV Golf tour luring players away with mind-boggling, there’s little left in the kitty to throw to the Champions Tour.

Purse bumps depend on sponsors

“We’re in a different situation with the Tour,” said Steve Flesch, one of the members of the Champions Tour Policy Board. “We rely on tournament sponsors to generate our purses so we don’t have as big a piece of pie.”

Champions Tour president Miller Brady said it comes down to the contracts with each title sponsor. For example, the Furyk & Friends purse is $2 million for the balance of the five-year deal, unless Constellation agrees to a bump based on the event’s performance.

Judging from the success of the first two years, it might happen.

“When we sign a contract with a title sponsor, we have to see if the event will sustain itself,” Brady said. “There’s no question this tournament has done well.”

Tournament host Jim Furyk is optimistic.

“I think you'll start to see purses go up,” he said. “Is it always going to be as fast as the players want it? Probably not. I really do believe we're in a strong place right now and I think you will see increases.”

The top purses on the Champions Tour are $4 million for the U.S. Senior Open and $3.5 million for the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which are not run by the Tour. The highest purse for a Champions Tour event is $3 million for the Senior Players.

The Players Championship purse reached $3 million in 1995.

Players seem content

Despite the numbers, guess who’s not complaining?

The players, who seem to be doing their best to not be greedy when they have a situation unique in sports: a second chance after their PGA Tour careers to make what they consider pretty decent money, in mostly no-cut events, with the option of riding in carts.

“I’m still playing for more money than my rookie year on Tour,” said Jerry Kelly, one of five players who have won three times this season on the Champions Tour and fourth on the money list with more than $1.9 million – on the verge of his third consecutive season with $2 million or more in annual earnings, a barrier he reached four times on the PGA Tour.

“I’m pretty happy with what I’ve gotten," he continued. "Other guys coming out are maybe going to look at it and go ‘okay, this is low for what I’m used to,’ but as long as we don’t stay static, as long as it keeps trending up, that’s fine.”

Miguel Angel Jimenez, who is fifth on the money list with more than $1.8 million and on target to pass $2 million for the second season in a row said it would be nice if more money was available to players who were the backbone of the PGA Tour, but like Kelly, went out of his way not to appear disgruntled.

“I think they need to resource a little bit more [money],” said the 13-time Champions Tour winner. “Since I’ve been part of the Champions Tour the purses [are] not changing much and I think we make a little contribution to the golf in all those years. I think it would be good.”

Flesch said purses have been a topic in policy board meetings but not to a great extent because most have done so well on the PGA Tour.

“The PGA Tour has been great to us our whole career,” he said. “Yes, everybody would like the purses to go up but I don’t think guys are out here demanding.”

Career earnings sustain players

Nineteen players in this week’s Furyk & Friends field have made $20 million or more in career PGA Tour earnings, topped by the tournament host with $71.5 million (fourth on the all-time list), trailed closely by Vijay Sing ($71.2 million).

Ten in this week’s field have earned at least $10 million on the Champions Tour, led by Bernhard Langer with more than $33 million.

The Tour pension, based on cuts made also is lucrative. According to the last PGA Tour annual report that was made available in 2019, more than 600 professional golfers have $1 million or more in their pension plans and 114 had $3 million or more.

Brady said he understands if some Champions Tour players see the purses skyrocketing on the PGA Tour and wonder if there’s any loose change left for them.

“Of course, all of us want to grow our purses, players, the Tour, everyone,” Brady said. “But they have to grow organically through the title sponsors and local sponsorships. I don’t think money is an issue with the players but I get it if they see what’s happening on the regular Tour and they might as, ‘where’s our money?’ They would like a piece of it.”

But Furyk pointed out that the Champions Tour is unique among professional sports: its members can win tournaments and money long after the youngest social security age of 62.

Just look at Langer, who is 65, has won five times since turning 62 and is eighth on the current money list.

“We would like to see [purses] increase quicker, but as a player, I also have to realize I'm 52 years old,” he said. “I'm playing a sport for a living, I get to do what I love.”

2023 PGA Championship prize money, purse: Payouts for Brooks Koepka, golfers from record $17.5 million pool

The stakes beyond the trophies thesmelves have never been higher in major championship golf.

pga tour champions winners purse

Plenty was up for grabs at the 2023 PGA Championship beyond the Wanamaker Trophy awarded to Brooks Koepka , winner of this year's tournament. The PGA of America announced Saturday that the purse for its signature event totaled $17.5 million, marking a new tournament high and the second-largest prize fund ever awarded to players at a major championship.

This year's PGA Championship purse was a $2.5 million increase from the $15 million handed out in 2022. Koepka will take home $3.15 million, signifying the largest year-over-year increase in tournament history. A solo runner-up would have claimed $1.89 million, though a birdie at the 18th for Viktor Hovland tied him with Scottie Scheffler with the golfers instead receiving $1.54 million each.

The huge payouts trickle down through the field  as everyone who at least made the weekend will not be left empty handed. Beyond the top three each bringing home seven figures, golfers who finished inside the top 20 rake in $200,000 or more, and the top 32 golfers each earned at least six-figure paydays.

Is golf catching on in Russia? Jack Nicklaus’s designers have certainly been busy there

Josh Sens

Golf is played in more than 200 countries and territories around the world, but until fairly recently, Russia wasn’t one of them.

Its introduction to the game came just 30 years ago with the opening of the country’s first course, Moscow City Golf Club, a nine-hole layout on the fringes of the capital.

At the time, Russia was still part of the Soviet Union. But while the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, gave his blessing to the project, the real driving force was the Swedish golf star, Sven “Tumba” Johansson, who announced his plans to build the course while floating on a boat down the Moscow River, whacking golf balls into the water under the bemused watch of party apparatchiks.

As if that weren’t entertainment enough, there was the club’s groundbreaking ceremony, in late 1987, where the motley assortment of celebrities in attendance (Mike Tyson, Sean Connery and Pele, among them) solidified golf’s status in the country as a little more than a curiosity.

That was then, this is now.

In the world’s ninth most populous country there are more than a dozen 18-hole courses, a handful of nine-hole layouts and myriad projects in the works.

The most recent to be completed is Raevo Golf and Country Club, outside Moscow, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that opened earlier this month.

Nicklaus Signature courses are relative rarities that come at a cost and carry prestige, but Raevo is not the first in the Moscow area. It’s the third, giving the city and its surrounds a greater concentration of Nicklaus Signature courses than any major capital in the world.

pga tour champions winners purse

This depth charge of Russian golf course development has been propelled in large part by economic shifts that have generated great reservoirs of private wealth. But the boom has also happened in the face of an inconvenient fact: Russia is not an easy place to grow the game.

Aside from having next to nothing in the way of golf tradition, the country enjoys little in the way of a golf season. Winters are long. Summers are short. Turf can have a tough time taking root. If you’re itching to play on a Moscow getaway, you should aim between mid-May and mid-October.

Throw in rocky, clay-based soil — far from the friendliest for course construction — and you understand why Russian sporting culture features more slap-shots on ice than chip shots around the green.

Yet golf progresses.

Over the past decade-plus, Dirk Bouts, a design associate with Nicklaus Design, has made about 80 trips to Russia, spending long stretches on the ground consulting on course renovations and overseeing new construction. During Bouts’s early visits, the majority of golfers he crossed paths with were expats. In more recent years, that demographic breakdown has turned on its head.

“The first time I went, golf’s presence was pretty much non-existent,” Bouts says. “But you see it taking root. It’s becoming more democratic. You have people making a decent visit. Now, it seems like every time I go back, there are more Russians out on the course.”

Just as picking up the game involves a learning curve, so does building courses in a fledgling golf market. The first Nicklaus Signature course in Russia was Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club, which opened in 2008 outside Moscow after a drawn-out five years of construction — a process prolonged by inexperienced Russian contractors working challenging terrain with outmoded equipment.

pga tour champions winners purse

By 2014, though, when it came time to cut the ribbon on Skolkovo, the second Nicklaus Signature design outside the capital, the work crews were more seasoned, the equipment upgraded and the entire process streamlined. The job took four years. It’s since gotten more efficient. The start-to-finish work on Raevo was a comparatively scant three years.

The resulting course is a sylvan beauty that spills through a woodsy landscape, west of the capital, with natural creeks and lakes as ornamentation, and gentle hills and valleys that lend plenty of movement. Stretched to the tips, the course plays 7,245 yards, plenty of heft to handle tournaments. The turf is creeping bentgrass, and the sand-capping and extensive drainage beneath it is designed to stretch the golf season to its fullest.

“Instead of mid-May to mid-October,” Bouts says, “we’re hoping for something more like mid-April to end of October.”

This month marked a soft opening for Raevo, as the clubhouse is not yet completed. When the grand opening takes place, celebrities will no doubt be in attendance, Nicklaus among them.

Don’t expect Mike Tyson.

Golf in Russia has gotten serious.
