Philmont TREKS 2023

Toolkit to assist crews in selecting Trek itineraries and creating crew Duty Rosters for their 2024 Philmont Trek.

NOTE: All Itinerary Selections Survey forms, Itinerary Selection Spreadsheets, and Duty Rosters for 2024 treks and Cavalcades have been updated.

This site is the home of tools developed to assist crews in selecting their itinerary choices for a Philmont Trek.  The tools included here are just that — tools!  Crews should use them as part of their selection process. This process works best if the entire crew is involved.

Two steps are recommended in preparing for your trek. These are the Itinerary Selection Process and the preparation of a crew Duty Roster .

Tools have been developed to assist your crew in these steps. Click the buttons below to access these tools.

These tools were initially developed in the 1990’s as a “quick and dirty” aid to helping a crew select it’s itinerary and having a workable duty roster. They have been updated every year since that time. If you have questions, problems with the tools, or suggestions, feel free to contact the author Sid Covington at [email protected] .

Trail Segments [clear]

Only trail segments between camps and / or trailheads are listed. If a path passes through another camp, you would have to search for each segment individually. For example, from Cyphers Mine to Clarks Fork, you would pass through Hunting Lodge. The path from Cyphers Mine to Clarks Fork would then be made up from the trail segments for both Cyphers Mine to Hunting Lodge and Hunting Lodge to Clarks Fork.

About 'Build-a-Path' (Premium feature)

Phil Trek is an invaluable resource for past and present Philmont 12-day, 9-day, or 7-day trek information. Developed to assist in the selection of an ideal itinerary by filtering the complete range of itineraries down to a manageable list based on the crew's preferred program activities or locations.

Each itinerary includes the standard descriptive information, with visualization of trails and camps on a live map including an interactive elevation profile. Multiple itineraries can be overlaid on a single map to compare. Contingents with multiple crews can determine rendezvous locations and overlay the itineraries that meet at that location to assist in selection.

Phil Trails provides detailed information about each trail segment including a live map of the trail, starting and ending elevations, the minimum and maximum elevations covered, the trail segment length, and an elevation profile.

Premium access to Phil Trek and Phil Trails adds the ability to download paths, camps, and trails in kml format for use in many GPS applications.

Philmont Legacy is a sister-site which documents the Philmont Staff legacy boards created by the seasonal staff of Philmont Scout Ranch.

Special Thanks

  • Bradley R. for helping with the new menu interface.
  • Phil W. for the Route Options idea.

Welcome to Build-a-Trail

This premium feature provides the ability to select multiple trail segments and create a single path from them.

Add

When you have added and organized the trail segments as desired, click the Build Path button to generate the path. The combined path can then be downloaded using the Download KML button.

This site uses wide tables and maps, making it non-functional on narrow mobile devices. Please switch to a wider screen.

Philmont Trek Itinerary Selection Q&A

Philmont Trek Itinerary Selection

Philmont Trek Itinerary Selection Q&A

In the video below Sal, Scott and Jeff discuss the process and considerations in picking from the long list of potential Trek options at Philmont. Some of the info in the video has been summarized below.

Purpose of the discussion

Help Crew advisors and Scouts better understand the various things to consider, share some best practices, and help Crews navigate the wide range of activities available in the backcountry so that they can pick the Philmont Trek Itinerary that will bring them the most joy.

Our panel shares some thoughts on the process for trek itinerary selection for 7, 9, and 12 day backpacking treks, things we’ve learned, etc.

What is Philmont?

A series of backcountry experiences and programs, separated by miles of hiking in the NM mountains.

Philmont Trek Itinerary Selection - blady ascent into clouds

A typical day on the trail at Philmont

In this section, Sal helps us understand exactly what a Trek Itinerary is and why it matters. He walks us through a typical day on the trail at Philmont Scout Ranch and shows how to read and understand the 2-page Itinerary descriptions listed in the Philmont Treks 2021 Intinerary Guidebook . There are lots of tips in this section to help you better understand the pros/cons of different trek features and how they may impact your daily routine in the backcountry.

Understanding mileage in the Itinerary Guidebook

The miles listed in the Guidebook are for the suggested route from drop off, to each camp, and to the pick up point. It does NOT include ANYTHING else, like side hikes to take in a view, get water, find a Red Roof, visit a program or activity area… or even wrong turns. Expect to hike 25-30% more distance than is listed.

Activities vs mileage?

When evaluating itinerary options we recommend that you pick a trek that is rating (below) that your crew can safely handle, but put more consideration and emphasis on the backcountry activities and programs offered on each trek.

Philmont’s Itinerary Ratings

The ratings consider a range of factors to provide a relative “degree of difficulty” for each trek.

Challenging

A “Challenging” itinerary will allow the crew more time for program. It also allows time to do some interesting side hikes, visit backcountry trading posts, take showers, and enjoy the solitude of the backcountry trail camps.

A “Rugged” itinerary, although offering more physical challenge, is very enjoyable for a crew that has trained. It also offers a variety of exciting programs.

A “Strenuous” itinerary is just as it sounds. A great experience for a crew of physically fit, Scouts, Venturers, and capable adults. More time is devoted to hiking; however, a well-prepared crew can still experience several programs. Many seasoned crews who have hiked together several years choose a strenuous itinerary.

Super Strenuous

A “Super Strenuous” is, by far, the most difficult and, for early rising Philmont crews, very rewarding! These few itineraries are highlighted by climbing some of Philmont’s highest peaks and hiking long days of many miles. These itineraries should be attempted by older, more experienced crews where every person is in excellent physical condition

Types of camps

We talked about the differences between staffed, trail, dry and layover camps.

How Philmont assigns treks to crews

We talk about the process that Lead Crew Advisors follow to submit their top Trek Itinerary choices, and how PSR processes that info to assign treks to Crews.

We also discuss “Sister crews”. What are they? What are the implications on trek selection?

How do Crews pick their top itineraries to request?

We recommend that Crews base selection on what activities the crew most wants to do while in the backcountry. It can be tempting to focus on which landmarks you want to visit. But most folks agree that you will remember the activities and program more than the myriad cool views on the trail.

Itinerary selection tools

Some tools we explored that may be useful for trek selection:

  • The brand new Philmont “Itinerary Explorer” tool is available within the Philmont Camping Gateway .
  • Sid’s spreadsheet?

How Crews request trek assignments

Sal showed in the Philmont Camping Gateway where the Lead Crew Advisor can find the link to submit the Crew’s top itineraries.

Trekking in neighboring properties

Scott talks about some of the considerations when evaluating Philmont Trek itineraries that go “off property” into lands not owned by Philmont.

Greater Tampa Bay Area Council

  • Philmont Council Contingent

philmont 2023 trek selection

This is the home page for the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council’s Contingent treks to Philmont Scout Ranch.

Our Council has sponsored successful Philmont contingents since 2000. Currently, the Council is organizing contingent treks for the summers of 2023 and 2024.

Our Objective

The Council desires to make the Philmont experience available to units and Scouts that would not normally have the opportunity.  With the difficulty in obtaining unit-based crew slots, we feel that the use of the Council Contingent is beneficial to all.  The Council provides this as a service to units to help them enjoy the Philmont experience.

What is a Contingent Trek?

Philmont permits Council’s to apply for a block of slots for a “contingent” trek to Philmont.  When the contingent is approved and the number of slots are known, the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council solicits crews from Council units (Troops, Teams, & Venturing Crews) to fill the contingent.

When the number of crew slots are known, they are allocated to Greater Tampa Bay Area Council units that sign up for the contingent two years in advance of the trek. The transportation, reservation, and check-in processes for the Contingent are arranged and handled by the volunteer Contingent Advisors working with the Council staff.

In general, for everything else, crews will function exactly as they would if they had reserved the trek directly.  Each crew is independent from the other contingent crews on the trail at Philmont.

Schedule a visit from a Philmont Ambassador

Contact a local Philmont Ambassador to schedule a presentation at your unit or event on all the options Philmont has to offer, including the council contingent each summer.

The Benefits of Studying in Russia For Foreigners

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Education

Should I Study Abroad in Russia?

Russia is usually not among those countries that come to mind when one is thinking about international studies. A country that is often underestimated owing that it has amazing offers for international students.

If you are still asking yourself, “Should I study abroad in Russia?”, then let’s find some reasons why you should include Russia on your list of prospective international study destinations.

Forget Japan, USA, Canada, or Israel, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Russia has the highest number of educated populations worldwide.

Moscow, Russia

Why Study in Russia?

There are reasons as to why more than 200,000 students from various countries study in Russian universities . Some of them have international students occupying 10%-20% of the classroom population. If you are still wondering why you should study in, then here are some of the advantages you should consider.

1. Comprehensive University Education

When it comes to Academics, Russia is known for its leadership in mathematics, physics, and natural sciences. However, you can still get deep and essential knowledge in all subjects including chemistry, biology, history, politics, and political science.

According to the 2020 QS World University Rankings, Russia registered 25 universities in the top 1,000 universities with Lomonosov Moscow State University leading the pack at position 84 worldwide.

The country hosts 766 universities that offer about 205 fields of study and 657 subjects for Bachelor’s, Master’s, Specialist, and Postgraduate students. These universities offer preparatory programs, short courses, vocational training, and an opportunity to learn the Russian language as a course.

The Worldwide Educating for the Future Index (WEFFI), an only major ranking that assesses inputs to education systems, ranks Russia number 26 when it comes to preparing students for demands of work and life in a rapidly changing world. This report determines the effectiveness of education systems by considering societal freedom and openness, teaching conditions, and policy approaches.

2. Affordable University Tuition Fee

To study abroad in Russia is cheaper when compared to equivalent universities worldwide. Here, the most prestigious universities are quite affordable, a factor that has made it easy for foreign students to consider them as great destinations for international studies.

Your tuition fee will depend on subject selection and standards set by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. In any Russia university, you can pay at least 83,000 Ruble ($1,125.48) a year for a full-time Bachelor’s Degree Program. It gets much lower when you step out of Moscow because fees vary from one region to another.

Also, foreign citizens get a chance to study abroad in Russia through scholarships (quotas) that award free tuition. Besides scholarships, foreign students can also benefit from exchange student programs offered by various Russian universities.

3. The Use of English Language

Since most teachings are in the native language, foreign students are required to develop a good command of the Russian language. Foreigners might find it hard to study in Russia due to a language barrier to communication, but the results are usually different.

First and foremost, the universities offer Russian language programs and courses for foreign citizens, which are usually free for sponsored international students. On the other hand, there is an option of enrolling in universities that offer their programs in English.

Getting a Russia university that offers its courses in British language helps a lot when it comes to writing essays. From top reviews, you can chat with essay writers and let them write your essay. There are enough professional essay writers for hire.

4. Availability of Dual Diplomas

Russia shares a common educational space with countries under the Bologna Declaration. Therefore, a Russian diploma is recognized in counties that signed an agreement with them. Furthermore, there are joint programs between foreign and Russian universities to issue dual diplomas to their graduates.

5. Study Abroad in Russia Student Benefits

Students studying in Russia are eligible for a range of discounts, especially in public and entertainment facilities. There is plenty of social activities you can do as a foreign student such as sports, tourism, camping, and volunteering.

In any Russia university, you are likely to find on-campus hostel accommodations. According to foreign students, most universities in the country have infrastructure and dormitories that are of good standards. International students get to spend less on food because most items are affordable, especially when you study outside Moscow.

Philmont Camping Gateway

The Philmont Camping Gateway allows the Reservation Contact to establish Lead Advisors, who may in turn enter participant information, certifications, and important travel information. The Gateway is accessible by email invitation link only. If you are a Lead Advisor or Reservation Contact, look for an email from [email protected] and you’ll find a link to access the Roster Gateway.

In early December, the Itinerary Guidebook will be published for crews to download and review.  Then, starting in mid-January, Lead Advisors can begin to submit itinerary preferences within the Gateway. These preferences can be modified until early February, when the Gateway will process all selections and make assignments using a random and fair process.  (Actual deadlines are published yearly in the Itinerary Guidebook.)  You will be notified via email after your itinerary has been assigned. For more information on Itinerary Selection, please see the Itinerary Guidebook.

Crew Roster – Every crew hiking in the Philmont backcountry must submit important participant information online prior to arriving at the Ranch. Philmont logistics and medical staff utilize the information found in each roster to understand the location for safety of backcountry participants should an emergency arise.

Reservation Contact – This person created the initial Philmont reservation and has been the primary contact for payments and planning. Sometimes the reservation contact also plays the role of a Lead Advisor. Once inside the Philmont Camping Gateway, Reservation Contacts have the option to view and modify information for every crew roster in their reservation.

Lead Advisor – Each Philmont crew has one designated Lead Advisor. This adult organizes their crew and enters information for each crew member into the Philmont Camping Gateway prior to arriving at Philmont. IN addition to participant information, the Lead Advisor also submits their planned Philmont arrival and departure travel information online.

Sister Crew – Crews on a 12-Day trek will have the option to request to hike with another crew on a 12-Day trek with a matching arrival day. Lead Advisors for a 12-Day trek may select a Sister Crew as soon as they access their crew roster through the link received via email. Once a Sister Crew arrangement has been confirmed by both crews, either crew’s Lead Advisor may submit itinerary preferences for both crews when Itinerary Selection opens at 9am on January 14, 2020.
