Planet Fitness is a health club chain that everyone in fitness has an opinion about—they either love it or hate it. People rarely fall in the middle.  If you've been working out at home for a while and would like to explore joining a gym, getting a Planet Fitness membership can be a worthwhile investment, especially if your goal is to improve your personal fitness, work out with like-minded people, and possibly work with the Planet Fitness in-house trainers. Others, such as powerlifters and Olympic weightlifters, or those who prefer the instructor-led HIIT-style workouts of Orangetheory Fitness , may reap no benefits because of what this gym doesn't have. 

In this review, we break down the cost of a Planet Fitness membership, what to do if you need to cancel a Planet Fitness membership, and a personal experience of trying a facility as a guest. You may not decide to join one in your area based on our review, but at least you'll have some knowledge about how the Planet Fitness processes work, what their facilities are like, and the atmosphere itself before you go for a personal experience.

Planet Fitness Membership

Planet Fitness promotes itself as a “judgment free zone,” and their target markets are beginners as well as people who want to lose weight. The information that follows about PF memberships and facilities is based on a combination of research as well as my personal visit to a Planet Fitness location in Beckley, West Virginia, where I trained and spoke with staff about a potential membership for myself.

Membership Overview

There are three categories of Planet Fitness memberships: Prepaid, Classic, and the PF Black Card. The Prepaid and Classic Memberships come with unlimited access to the member’s home club, where they sign up (hours vary by location), access to the PF Mobile App , and free fitness training in the club.

The Black Card membership is what PF heavily promotes. It comes with all the above benefits as well as virtual fitness training, permission to bring a guest for free, access to any PF location worldwide, and services located in the Black Club area, such as water massage , massage chairs, red light therapy, tanning beds, and 50 percent discounts on select beverages they sell.

Planet Fitness Membership Cost

If you wish to prepay for a year’s membership, the cost is $199. There is no enrollment fee and no cancellation; however, the prepaid membership is final, and you can't get a refund.

The Classic membership is $10 a month and the PF Black Card membership costs $24.99 a month. There is also a one-time enrollment fee, but the staff person I spoke with informed me that the fee changes daily. On the day I visited, I could've signed up for the Classic membership for an enrollment fee of $62.98, or I could've become a PF Black Card member by paying $37.15. Some days it could be less, others may be more, and if there is a promotion going on, there may be no cost at all.

Outside of the one-time enrollment fee, there is also an annual payment of $39 that must be paid on October 1st of every year that you're a member. All payments for Classic and PF Black Card memberships must be paid by automatic draft out of your bank account or credit card. You can't pay monthly fees in advance.

As of this writing, there are no family membership packages, but in the summer of 2022, students of middle school age or older were allowed to train for free.

How to Cancel a Planet Fitness Membership

If you have to move away, or if you simply wish to cancel your membership, you must sign a form at the location that you signed up at to confirm. There is no charge for canceling your membership, and you can even finish out the last month that was already drafted out of your account.

The other way your membership can be ended is if the management terminates it. One of the controversies surrounding Planet Fitness is the infamous “lunk alarm” that allegedly goes off if you make too much noise while training.

The lunk alarm is actually controlled by the staff, and they can sound the alarm from their desk if they feel you're making too much noise. Once the alarm is sounded, the management could potentially cancel your membership.

What We Like About Planet Fitness

• Numerous ways to train, including the leg and abs room, 30-minute room, and the 360-degree station
• Multiple rows of ellipticals, treadmills , stair steppers, and stationary bikes
• Several machines allow you to train your entire body adequately
• Cleaning stations are clearly located throughout the facility
• The PF Black Card membership offers several extra benefits

What We Don't Like About Planet Fitness

• There are no barbells, flat-bench press stations, or squat racks. The top weight for dumbbells is 75 lbs.
• Extra costs, including the different enrollment fees based on the day and the annual October 1 payment
• Ellipticals and recumbent bikes don't offer varying levels of resistance
• No family membership options

FAQs About Planet Fitness

Is black card worth it at planet fitness.

If you wish to use tanning beds, massage services, and the other benefits that come with it, then yes, it will be worth upgrading to the Black Card. It could also be useful if you're a frequent traveler and need to train at other PF locations.

If those benefits aren't as valuable to you, you would be fine with a Classic or Prepaid membership package.

Can you bring a guest to Planet Fitness?

Black Card members can bring guests with them at any time, so long as they don't bring the same guest every day. If you're a Classic member and you're bringing a guest who may sign up as a new member, the staff may allow them to train for free that day.

When I went to PF to explore getting a membership, they let me work out as a guest at no charge, but I had to provide contact information and take a photo at the counter for their records. I didn't have to submit any financial information.

Is there a dress code at Planet Fitness?

The PF website says they're all for members expressing themselves, but they do have a standard code that should be followed, such as no open-toe shoes, jeans, or pants with grommets, and the shoes you wear must be clean. You also can't wear see-through clothing or items that they would consider “intimidating,” such as shirts with foul language or descriptions of violence.

How much does a personal trainer cost at Planet Fitness?

There is no cost to work with a PF trainer at the gym where you sign up. This service is included with all three types of membership. However, they don't allow outside trainers to train clients in their facilities—even if the trainer is also a member.

With more locations than any other gym chain, Planet Fitness gyms dot the landscape across America—chances are there’s even one in your neighborhood.

But even a cursory internet search will reveal that Planet Fitness is different from many other gyms. The brand has a laid-back approach to fitness, and catches flak for it from some people. While its tagline is a “judgment-free zone,” you may have heard it referred to as a “progress-free zone.” 

All joking aside, Planet Fitness can be an excellent option for many people—it just depends on your fitness level and what you’re looking for. We did a little digging into Planet Fitness to see what the fitness club offers and who might best benefit from membership in 2024.

What Is Planet Fitness?

Planet Fitness is a fast-growing franchise of fitness centers across America. With its home base in Hampton, New Hampshire, Planet Fitness has an estimated 2,039 fitness centers worldwide, with locations in the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Panama, Mexico and Australia.

A typical location is about 20,000 square feet and is easily identifiable by the purple and yellow shingle on the outside of its locations. Inside, users will find the same purple and yellow branding on its cardio, weight training and circuit training equipment.

Founded in 1992, Planet Fitness was initially envisioned as a “judgment-free zone.” It was created and designed for casual users and those just starting out on their fitness journey.

How Much Does Planet Fitness Cost?

Planet Fitness offers two membership levels, day passes for prospective members, guest passes and even summer passes for teens.

Classic Membership

Planet Fitness is relatively affordable—$10 per month (plus taxes and fees) gets you unlimited access to your home club, Planet Fitness app workouts, free fitness training and free Wi-Fi. (The average cost of a monthly gym membership nationwide is just over $40.)

While monthly dues are only $10, it’s important to note that Planet Fitness charges an annual fee of $39 and a one-time start-up fee of $1. That said, there’s no commitment.

Planet Fitness Black Card membership

For those who have a little more flexibility in their bank account (and maybe their calendars), Planet Fitness offers a black card membership that earns you a few more perks.

For $24.99 plus taxes and fees, black card members get all of the standard membership perks (unlimited access to your home club, Planet Fitness app workouts, free Fitness training, and free Wi-Fi) with a few extra goodies, including:

• Access to any Planet Fitness location worldwide
• The freedom to bring a guest anytime
• Use of HydroMassage
• Use of tanning beds
• 50% off select drinks
• 20% off at Reebok.com

Like the standard Planet Fitness membership, the PF black card membership requires a $39 annual fee and a $1 start-up fee, and there’s no commitment.

For those who want to give it a try, Planet Fitness offers free day passes for the club of your choice. Anyone who’s interested can fill out a form online, and a day pass will be e-mailed to them. If you’re using a day pass to check out your local club, keep in mind that you may be required to show some ID upon check-in, and all day pass users are required to take a free tour.

Summer Pass

Citing research that showed teens weren’t meeting their daily physical activity recommendation during the pandemic and CDC statistics that point to a mental health crisis among teens , Planet Fitness officially kicked off its High School Summer Pass program in May 2022. Through this program, the company offered free summer memberships for high school students through August 31, 2022.

Planet Fitness Hours and Locations

Currently, Planet Fitness has over 2,000 locations worldwide. Some Planet Fitness locations are open 24 hours a day, and some are only open for 24 hours on select weekdays with more limited schedules on the weekends. And as you might have guessed, holiday hours vary.

If you’re trying to get a feel for how much foot traffic you can expect at your local club, the website for your local Planet Fitness club will most likely have a crowd meter, so you know when to go and when to steer clear. 

What Workout Equipment Does Planet Fitness Have?

Planet Fitness is a gym, so you’ll find a good selection of the usual suspects, including cardio machines , ellipticals , exercise bikes and treadmills.

Gym equipment at every location also includes an assortment of:

• Ab machines
• Chest press machines
• Bicep curl machines
• Leg presses
• Smith machines

What you won’t find at Planet Fitness are squat racks. Remember, Planet Fitness tries to maintain a welcoming atmosphere, so things that may seem intimidating to its members, like heavy weights and weight lifters grunting and dropping weights, etc., are really not welcome.

Planet Fitness doesn’t offer workout classes per se, but it does offer PE@PF . Essentially, this is a series of fitness training sessions led by certified fitness instructors. The classes are designed to help first-time members get familiar with the equipment and maybe even build an individual work plan workout plan to follow. The sessions are typically conducted in small groups, and they’re free to fitness members and often available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Free Weights

While there are no free weights at Planet Fitness, members have access to dumbbells and Smith machines (a machine that combines a squat rack with a barbell ), but that’s really as far as weight lifting goes at Planet Fitness.

Personal Trainers

Like most gyms, Planet Fitness also has personal trainers available on-site. And again, like most gyms, personal trainers are accredited through organizations like the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or the American Council on Exercise (ACE). Personal training sessions are free with your Planet Fitness membership.

Keep in mind that while personal trainers at Planet Fitness are there to answer your questions, offer some assistance when you’re using a new machine and possibly provide some guidance when you’ve hit a plateau in your weight loss. The trainers are not there to consistently coach you through workouts or check on your progress in any way.

Bench Press

Planet Fitness locations do not have bench presses; if you want to do some weight lifting, however, your best would be a Smith machine.

What Amenities Does Planet Fitness Have?

Planet Fitness offers a few nice amenities to its members. Some amenities are available to all membership levels, while some are only available to black card members and some may only be available at select locations. If you’re eyeing any of the following as a possible perk, you may want to call your local club to make sure they offer it.

For example, while researching this article, I needed to know if Planet Fitness still offered Total Body Enhancement, so I called my local club. Turns out my local club doesn’t, but one of the friendly staff members told me that the PF club about 40 minutes away does.

Hydromassage

Most Planet Fitness locations will have Hydromassage beds and lounge chairs. As their name implies, Hydromassagers use water to massage the body. These machines are a great way to soothe tired muscles, and they’re great for post-workout massages. The Hydromassage machines are only available to Black Card members.

Planet Fitness offers its Black Card members access to its tanning booths and tanning beds. Tanning sessions are limited to 15 minutes, and the equipment is first-come, first-serve. If someone is using the tanning equipment, not only will you have to wait until they’re done, but you’ll also have to wait for staff members to clean the equipment before you can hop in.

With your Black Card membership, you can use the tanning bed whenever you like during your club’s opening hours, whereas spray tan booths usually have posted hours of operation. 

Total Body Enhancement

Some Planet Fitness locations have a total body enhancement machine as well. Also known as the Beauty Angel Booth, this machine leans into the science of red light therapy. Disappointingly it’s not a time machine, but according to research, red light therapy may help:

• Stimulate the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) , which can give you the kick in the pants you need for your workout (aka boosts your energy levels)
• Stimulate collagen production , which can increase elasticity and improve the overall appearance of your skin
• Stimulate blood flow
• Reduce inflammation in muscles and joints

Massage chairs

Planet Fitness Black Card members have unlimited use of the massage chairs available at every gym.

Planet Fitness locations typically have showers available for members to use post-workout.

It’s worth noting that they don’t have a towel service, so you’ll have to bring your own.

Locker Rooms

PF clubs also have lockers for their members, but keep in mind that you can only store your belongings for the duration of your workout, not overnight.

While Planet Fitness has plenty of gym equipment, massage chairs, tanning beds and Hydromassagers, they don’t have saunas. 

The Pros of Planet Fitness

• It’s beginner-friendly.
• Even if you opt for a Black Card membership, your monthly membership costs are still under $30, which is less than most. Plus, there are no hidden fees.
• There are plenty of amenities and perks with a black card membership.

The Cons of Planet Fitness

• Its applicability is limited to beginners and more casual users.
• There are no barbells.
• The dumbbells in Planet Fitness only go up to 75 pounds.

Who Planet Fitness Is Best For

While many gyms target bodybuilders and folks who are further along in their fitness journey, Planet Fitness targets novices and casual users. For that reason, Planet Fitness is best for newbies and those who take a more laid-back approach to their fitness.

Who Planet Fitness Is Not Best For

Considering that Planet Fitness is designed for and marketed to casual users and those just starting out on their fitness journeys, it may not be suitable for more experienced users or fitness buffs. Moreover, the dumbbells in planet fitness only go up to 75-pounds, so anyone beyond that fitness level may not find much of a challenge there.

How Do You Cancel a Planet Fitness Membership?

Planet Fitness memberships can’t be canceled by email or phone, but the process is still relatively easy. When you’re ready to part ways, you can fill out a cancellation form at your local club or send a letter to your club requesting a cancellation. 

How Planet Fitness Stacks Up Against Other National Gym Chains

A gym is a gym, and you’ll likely find the same types of workout equipment. Treadmills , ellipticals, leg machines and the like are all standard fare. As for amenities, each gym will prioritize and offer its own. Whatever the brand thinks its customer would like is what you’ll likely find.

The real difference between Planet Fitness and other gyms lies in its atmosphere and the overall fitness level of the user. While gyms like LA Fitness and Crunch cater to all fitness levels, Planet Fitness makes it very clear that the occasional user and even beginners are its bread and butter. For that reason, Planet Fitness skips the heavy free weights and offers more robust amenities like tanning beds and Hydromassagers.

Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to decide what their goals are. Knowing that will quickly inform their decision on which gym to choose.

They also don’t allow clothing that may be considered a safety hazard or anything that could potentially damage the equipment.

Final Thoughts

While people certainly have a lot to say about Planet Fitness (not all of it good), the fitness club has earned its place among fitness centers and gyms. The fact is, it defined its target market from the jump and never strayed from its original intent. Ultimately, Planet Fitness was created with novices and casual users in mind, and for some, that’s their shortcoming. But for the busy mom who wants the freedom to get a workout in when time permits, or the newbie who’s just getting started on their fitness journey, Planet Fitness has a lot to offer.

Following a Planet Fitness online registration, what should you do?

First Visit Checklist Download the PF App to use your digital keytag for check-in and to access additional features like our crowd meter and on-demand workouts. In order to create your member profile, a team member will take your photo.

Bring a lock to use on our lockers each time you visit and change in our locker rooms. If you plan to use our shower facilities, be sure to bring your own towel, shampoo, and soap. A gym bag is useful for carrying everything you need. Also, come prepared to work out.

If you want to watch any of our TVs while doing cardio, you must wear headphones. Water to keep you hydrated and feeling great, as well as appropriate footwear for your protection and performance!

Need motivation for your workout? Our helpful team members and trainers are always available, and our app has a ton of options for all levels, whether in the club or at home, as well as the motivation you need to feel great about entering our doors.

Many people, if they change their locations for a few days, want to take a guest with them and wonder if they can go to the gym to continue their fitness routine.

But the question that always revolves around in their mind is if the local gym here has a guest pass to let me in.

Well, mostly the answers are Yes! But it also depends on you to get into the gym.

Does Planet Fitness Have Guest Passes?

Planet Fitness offers guest passes for their Black Card members throughout their 2000 locations. If you are a member and want to bring a family or friend, they must register as a guest on your membership card.

Planet Fitness offers a wide range of memberships to suit your needs. Planet Fitness makes it easy to join, with no contract and no initiation fee.

This gym has been making members happy for over 20 years by creating a judgment-free zone where everyone is welcome.

Their staff is passionate about fitness and helping everyone feel great at their healthiest. They offer group exercise classes (included in your membership), 24-hour tanning and massage chairs, and the best gym floor in the business.

Are Planet Fitness Guest Passes Free?

Planet Fitness guest passes are not free. You will need your current membership card, preferably a Black PF membership card, to receive your guest pass.

Trial periods are available for Planet Fitness’ monthly membership plans. These trial periods allow you to try the gym out before signing a long-term contract.

In addition, Planet Fitness offers a lifetime membership option for $10.99/month that allows you unlimited visits to any Planet Fitness location throughout your life.

Both full and partial refunds are offered with reasonable notice to Planet Fitness corporate offices.

You can get your Black card with a total fee of $23.99 at first, then pay $22.99 per month for getting all those benefits that come with the membership. $1 is the enrollment fee for the Black card at Planet Fitness.

Who Can Get Planet Fitness Guest Passes?

Planet Fitness has several different membership options available. The most popular choice is their Black Card membership, which allows for many benefits.

You must become a member to get their guest pass. To get your guest in with you, he or she must register as a guest on your Black membership card.

Visit their site , fill in your guest’s email, and also fill up other information that the site asks for. After that, your guest has to download the Planet Fitness app to access his or her check-in code.

When you reach the fitness club, you will need the black membership card code and the check-in code as well to enter the club.

What is the Planet Fitness Guest Pass Policy?

One of the benefits of the Black Card membership is the ability to bring only one guest with you every time you visit Planet Fitness. You have to make sure that your guest remains with you always.

• He or she does not use any other privileges except using workout equipment at the club, such as haircuts or hydro massage chairs. They can work out with you.
• Your invitee must be 18 years or older to use Planet Fitness equipment and also have to get their ID card with him or her.
• Although there are some exceptions to this rule, such as bringing your child over the age of 13.
• They strictly follow the non-discrimination rule.
• In rare cases, you may have to show identity proof to how your gender identity and, in this case, requires more documents instead of just one paper (letter).
• Any type of harassment, either physical or verbal, will not bear at all.
• Private information will keep confidential.
• Service animals are not allowed. In some cases, they will ask the reason, and if necessary, they will take care of the service animal.
• Personal aids or medicines are allowed.
• Restrictions imposed on equipment are based on the laws.
• Day fee is only applicable if you are not a member. It is like a trial. You will be charged the whole payment if you get to the location within 30 days.
• You must have to show your documents and over 18 years to get day fee.
• Individuals below 18 years also don’t apply for a day fee even if they are with their parents or guardians.

Can Guest Pass Use Any Equipment or Facilities at Planet Fitness?

Yes, your guest having a Guest Pass can use any Equipment at Planet Fitness, providing they stay with you.

But they can’t take advantage of other privileges that come with your black membership card. Only you can avail those opportunities.

Can I bring a guest with me to Planet Fitness? How much is it to add a friend?

Yes, you can bring anyone friend with you anytime you visit Planet Fitness location. You just have to buy a black card membership for adding a friend.

And in case you have two friends or more, they can get the day fee option as well. A day fee costs you $20 for a day visit.

Conclusion:

Planet Fitness Black card does have a limit on how many free guest passes are allowed per person.

However, if you are not a Black Card member and would like another guest pass after that point, you can sign up for a free trial pass instead.

This allows you to bring one guest into your local Planet Fitness on a single day.

The majority are extremely well-equipped, most including a swimming pool, extensive class schedule, open courts for many sports, and also saunas, beauty salons, and tanning facilities. Expect to pay about 28,000 – 62,000 RUR for an annual subscription (in cash, upfront).

Many fitness centers in Moscow offer facilities for playing tennis, as do the golf courses. But you can also try a specialized tennis club, or the facilities are the stadiums:

Swimming Pools

The great majority of fitness centers in Moscow also have swimming pools. But you can also easily find great pools and even waterparks without a gym membership.

• Olympic Sports Complex This stadium has the best swimming pool in all of Moscow. Note that you must bring a medical certificate showing you are free of skin, and other, conditions that can be transmitted through the water (can be issued at any public clinic). There are numerous yoga centers in Moscow, and of course many fitness centers also offer yoga classes. The following yoga center has English-speaking instructors available:

Ice Skating Rinks

Ice skating is very popular in Moscow. In the winter, there are open-air rinks all around the city and at Gorky Park. There are also numerous indoor rinks:

Skiing and Snowboarding Slopes

• Krylatskoe Downhill skiing and snowboarding on a 400-meter slope. Krylastskaya Ul 2 Closest metro: Krylastskoye or Molodezhnaya (then take bus number 229 or 829)

Besides these two slopes, Moscow offers a wealth of possibilities for cross-country skiing, especially in parks in the outskirts of the city including Sokolniki, Bitsevskiy Park, Kuzminki, Vorobievy Gory, and Yakhroma.

Horse Riding Facilities

There are many locations for horse riding in and around Moscow. The following two have English-speaking instructors available:
