Rail Staff Travel (RST) provides rail staff travel facilities for eligible Active and Retired Employees of the rail industry and eligible family members. RST is part of the Rail Delivery Group.

With a registered account you can buy staff discounted tickets through RST Online at www.railstafftravel.com

To receive registration details, send us your name and home address by e-mail with "RST Online Registration" as the subject. Requests can only be sent by the employee (as primary cardholder) or widow(er)s.

Unfortunately RST Online is not yet available to those holding PTAC cards, NIR cards or CIE cards.

RRB Group D Travel Pass Download now available, RRB Group D Mock Test link to be activated at 3 pm

Mumbai: Railway Recruitment Board, RRB has released the RRB Group D Travel Pass on the official RRB Regional websites. For those for whom the RRB Group D Exam Dates have been scheduled between September 17 and October 6 can now download the travel pass on the regional websites. The RRB Group D Mock Test would be released shortly on the regional websites. Candidates can download the travel pass by logging on the link for Exam Date and City for RRB Thiruvavananthapuram. For remaining regional websites, candidates are advised to wait for updates.

Amtrak customers can tour the country for one low fare with usa rail pass.

For a limited time, customers can purchase the new rail pass for $299 per traveler

WASHINGTON – With the relaunch of its USA Rail Pass , Amtrak is introducing a new and affordable way to take a multi-segment train journey across America. This new offering allows customers to take up to ten rides to see the country and explore sights at many of Amtrak’s 500 destinations. Now through June 22, the USA Rail Pass is available for $299, a savings of $200 off the regular $499 price. Customers taking advantage of this special introductory offer will pay less than $30 per ride for ten travel segments over 30 days.

To make the experience as seamless and touch-free as possible, customers can purchase the USA Rail Pass on Amtrak.com and start building their itinerary on the website or on the Amtrak app . By leveraging the app, customers can also access their ticket, check train status and get boarding information prior to departure.

“We want to offer customers a truly unique way to travel this summer,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Revenue Officer Roger Harris. “With the new electronic USA Rail Pass, customers can take advantage of a great value and newly streamlined web and mobile app interfaces to make managing personalized travel plans convenient and easy.”

USA Rail Pass allows up to 10 segments in a 30-day period beginning with the customer’s first trip and is valid for use within 120 days of pass purchase. After purchasing the pass, customers can book and modify their trip itinerary and will receive an electronic ticket for each segment to present to the conductor when boarding.

USA Rail Pass is available for travel in Coach class—featuring wide, reclining seats with a big picture window, ample legroom, and no middle seat. A travel segment occurs when a customer boards and disembarks one of Amtrak’s scheduled services. If the trip involves making a connection, customers will use two segments of the USA Rail Pass. Upgrades to Business Class and private room accommodations are not available at this time. Amtrak Guest Rewards members will earn two points per dollar spent on each USA Rail Pass following travel on the first segment. Additional restrictions, terms and conditions apply. The Railway Recruitment Board of India Conducts the RRB Group D Recruitment (Also known as RRC Group D). This recruitment is conducted to fill the various Group D level posts in the India Railway. The Scale of this recruitment is bigger than any other recruitment exams conducted in India. This is because Indian Railways is the Biggest Public Sector Entity of India and it is also the biggest Employer. Getting a Job in India Railways means Job security for life. This aspect makes the RRB Group D Posts very lucrative.

Earlier Updates regarding the exam

• RRB Group D tier-1 exam has been postponed.
• With reference to the Detailed Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) No. RRC-01/2019 published on 23.02.2019 and opening of online registration of applicants through the websites of RRBs on 12.03.2019 and "Notice on Exam Schedule for CBT" published on 15.03.2019, 27.03.2019 and on 08.12.2021 respectively, through the websites of RRBs, following changes, are made through this Corrigendum and Amendment.
• The CBT as per details provided in CEN No. RRC-01/2019 will commence tentatively from 23rd February 2022 in multiple phases, subject to the prevailing conditions and Government guidelines issued from time to time in view of handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
• The link of viewing Exam City and Date and downloading of Travelling Authority of SC/ST candidates will be made available on all RRB websites in due course i.e. 10 days prior to the start of the exam.
• Downloading of E-call letters will start 4 days prior to the CBT date mentioned in exam city and date intimation link. In view of the large number of applications received, Railways have decided to conduct Two-Stage Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) in terms of Para 3 of the "Important Instructions- Examination Process (page 3)", Para 1.9 of " General

Stages of Exam: As per the notification released on 24 January 2022 the exam pattern for the RRB Group D exam will be conducted in two stages of CBT. Please find the updated exam pattern for the RRB Group D Exam below.

CBT Stage 1

RRB Group D CBT exam will be held in a single stage, there will be no second stage of CBT.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

Based on the merit of the candidates in the CBT, candidates shall be called for PET. Three times the community wise total vacancy of the Posts notified against RRBs/RRCs. Passing Physical Efficiency Test (PET) is mandatory, and the same will be qualifying in nature. The criterion for PET is as under:

Total Vacancies

The CBT as per details provided in CEN No. RRC-01/2019 is scheduled to commence tentatively from 17th August 2022 to 25th August 2022.

Around 1,03,769 vacancies have been declared by the RRB in the official notification of RRB Group D 2020-21 Exam.

The candidate must be between 18 yrs to 33 yrs of age as on 01.07.2019. Age relaxation has also been given in the upper age limit for different reserved categories

The application fees for Gen and OBC is Rs.500 and for all other categories, it is Rs.250.

Downloading of E-call letters has commenced from 13th August 2022.

If any information like candidate name, surname, address, date of birth, etc. is mentioned incorrectly on the Railway Group D Admit Card 2021, then the respective candidate should immediately get in touch with the RRB authorities and inform them about the same, to get the incorrect information changed.

No. A candidate can download her/his respective Railway Group D Admit Card 2021 from the download link of the Regional website from which she/he has applied for the Railway RRB Group D Recruitment 2021.

The RRB Group D Admit Card contains a Self Declaration column. In this column, the candidate has to write a self-declaration saying the information provided is correct in her/his own handwriting along with her/his signature and left thumb impression. The Self declaration column is to be filled in the exam hall in front of the investigator and not before that.

The RRB Group D Exam Center given on the Admit Card cannot be changed. No such change requests are entertained by the Railway Recruitment Board. The candidate has to appear for the RRC Group D Exam at the exam center mentioned on the admit card.

The Free Railway Travel Facility to attend the RRC Group D CBT is available for SC/ST category candidates only. To avail of this facility, the candidate would have to submit a copy of the Railway Group D Admit Card along with the SC/ST certificate during the time of ticket booking.

A candidate has to carry the original and a photocopy of a valid ID proof along with the Railway RRB Group D Call Letter 2021 to be allowed to appear for the CBT. Valid ID proof can be any one of the following documents -: Driving License Aadhar Card Voter ID Card PAN Card Passport Employee ID Card (for Govt Employees) College ID Card (For Students)

RRB Group D 2023 Recruitment - RRC Group D Level 1 Exam Dates, Vacancy, Eligibility and Admit Card

RRB Group D exam is conducted by RRB to recruit eligible candidates for various posts of Grade-IV, in Level 1 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix in various departments of Indian Railways. Candidates who want to realise their dream of working for the prominent Indian Government Sector (Indian Railways) can take the RRB Group D Level 1, RRB NTPC and other railway examinations conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board. 

The notification for the RRB Group D 2023 exam is not yet released. The exam date for RRB Group S 2022 was published on June 30, 2022, in relation to the Railway RRB Group D Level 1 Recruitment. According to the RRB Group D Exam Date 2022 Notice, the RRB Group D CBT 1 is scheduled to begin on August 17, 2022, and will fill 1,03,769 openings for the positions of Assistant Pointsman, Level-I posts in other Indian Railways departments, Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Helper/Assistant in various technical departments (Electrical, Mechanical, and S&T departments), and Track Maintainer Grade-IV.

RRB Group D Recruitment

The RRB Group D recruitment is done by the RRC – Railway Recruitment Cells. The RRB on behalf of the RRC holds RRB Group D recruitment. The RRB Group D recruitment is announced by the Railway Board through Railway Group D official notification.

The recruitment notification for the RRC Group D exam 2022 was released on 23rd February 2019. Due to the Covid-19 and related restrictions, the exam was postponed and now it is scheduled to be conducted on 17th August 2022 onwards in multiple shifts. This time Computer Based Test will be held only in one phase followed by the PET/PST, document verification and medical examination.

Candidates who have applied for the RRC Group D 2019 exam can expect the admit card 10 days before the announced exam date. The details of recruitment for the RRB Group D exam and RRB Group D exam dates are discussed below.

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRBs) has announced the date of the RRB Group D exam for 2022, which will take place on June 30. The RRB Group D Exam 2022 will now be held from August 17th, 2022, in multiple shifts, according to the officials. There won’t be a second stage of the CBT for the CEN RRC, according to RRB’s notification (Level-1).

RRB Group D Vacancy

The Railway Board conducts RRB Group D recruitment region-wise, therefore the RRB Group D vacancies are released along with the notification are also given region-wise. The RRC Group D vacancy for 2023 is based on the notification of 2019.

Given below are the details of the RRB Group D Vacancy for the ongoing recruitment for the 2023 exams.

As per the official Notification, the railway board released 103769 RRB Group D vacancies to recruit personnel for various posts such as Helper/Assistant, Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Assistant Pointsman, Level I posts through the RRB Group D exam.

Besides these, the total number of RRB Group D vacancies for reserved category candidates such as PwBD is 4,326, Backward PwBD is 112 and ExSM/CCAA is 20,734.

RRB Group D Eligibility

Candidates willing to apply for the RRB Group D exam are required to fulfil certain conditions to be eligible to appear for the Railway Group D exam.

The conditions for RRB Group D eligibility are decided by the conduction body itself. The eligibility criteria important for candidates to fulfil are prescribed in detail in the RRB Group D official notification.

The candidate’s eligibility for the RRB Group D exam is based on the fulfilment of the following conditions:

• Nationality

RRB Group D Age Limit

• RRB Group D Qualification

The highlights of RRB Group D eligibility criteria are given below:

RRB Group D Nationality

A candidate is eligible to appear for the RRB Group D exam only if he/she is:

• A citizen of India, or
• A subject of Nepal, or
• A subject of Bhutan, or
• A Tibetan refugee permanently settled in India from and before January 1, 1962.
• A person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Zambia, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (2), (3), (4) and (5) present a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India to the recruiting body.

The Railway Recruitment Board has set the RRB Group D Lower Age limit to 18 years and that of RRB Group D maximum age limit is 33 years. Any candidates beyond the age limit extremes as prescribed by the Railway Board will not be allowed to appear for the examination.

As prescribed in the notification, RRB Group D Age Limit for candidates in the RRB Group D 2023 examination is to be reckoned from 1st July 2021.

Candidates appearing for RRB Group D 2023 examination must have their date of birth between 1st July 2019 and the dates given in the table below.

Note* – Candidates should fill the same date of birth in the application form as recorded in the Matriculation/ Class 10th certificate or an equivalent certificate because no subsequent request for changing the date of birth will be considered.

The candidates belonging to reserved categories are entitled to certain relaxation on the RRB Group D Age Limit criteria.

The RRB Group D Age relaxation allowed to reserved category candidates are as mentioned below:

The detailed age relaxation to reserved category candidates as mentioned in the notification is provided below:

• If a candidate is eligible for age relaxation on more than one ground, he would be accorded the highest of the limits (not cumulative) for which he is eligible.
• Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) and applying against unreserved vacancies will not be allowed any relaxation on age.
• PwBD candidates applying against UR vacancies will be allowed age relaxation applicable for UR PwBD only

RRB Group D Education Qualification

The minimum qualification mandatory for candidates to possess for the RRB Group D exam is set by the Railway Recruitment Board.

The minimum education qualification that the board expects from candidates in order to be eligible for the RRB Group D examination is 10th pass (OR) ITI from institutions recognised by NCVT/SCVT (or) equivalent (OR) National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT.

RRB Group D Salary

The basic RRB Group D Salary is decided by the recruitment board. Railway Group D salary for any candidate selected i.e. the initial pay scale of RRB Group D Level 1 employees is ₹18000/ per month based on the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.

RRB Group D Notification

The Railway Recruitment Board Releases the RRB Group D notification to recruit eligible candidates to fill the vacancies in the different departments of Indian Railways for level 1 posts of the 7th CPC pay matrix.

The last Railway Group D notification was RRB Group D 2019-20 notification released on 23rd February 2019. The examination for the same is scheduled to happen on 17th August 2022.

RRB Group D Apply Online

Since the notification is not released, RRB Group D 2023 online application window is not open yet.

As prescribed in the official notification of the RRB Group D exam, the online application for RRB Group D 2019 started on 12th March 2019. The last date for the final submission of the RRB Group D application forms was 26th April 2019.

Aspirants of the RRB Group D exam filled out the RRB Group D registration form within the dates mentioned by the board.

RRB Group D Application Fees

The recruitment board accepts Fee payment of RRB Group D application form in both online and offline mode:

• Online Fee Payment through Debit Card, Credit Card and Internet Banking is accepted
• Offline Fee payment can be done through SBI Bank Challan Payment mode and Post Office Challan Payment mode.

RRB Group D Exam Pattern

Any changes in the RRB Group D exam pattern is decided or done by the conducting body. The RRB Group D selection process comprises four stages:

• RRB Group D (CBT) Computer Based Test
• RRB Group D (PET) Physical Efficiency Test
• RRB Group D (DV) Document Verification
• RRB Group D (MT) Medical Test

RRB Group D Exam Pattern CBT

The computer-based test of the RRB Group D exam is conducted for 1 and half hours and asks 100 questions. There is a negative marking scheme in the RRB Group D exam. Candidates for each wrong attempt will be penalized with 1/3rd marks.

RRB Group D PET Exam Pattern

After successfully clearing the CBT exam i.e. attaining the minimum qualifying marks as set by the board, candidates are called for the PET test, the next round of the RRB Group D selection process.

The RRB Group D PET is just qualifying in nature i.e. it is mandatory for candidates to clear the exam but the marks obtained won’t be considered for the final selection of candidates.

NEW DELHI: The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has declared the RRB Group D result 2022 for RRB Guwahati, Bhopal, Kolkata, Ajmer, Bhubaneshwar, Allahabad, Secunderabad, Chennai, Ahamadabad, Patna, Bengaluru regions on the respective official websites. RRB Exam Calendar 2024 has been released announcing that RRB Group D 2024 Notification will be released in between October and December 2024 . The complete schedule will be released by the Railway Recruitment Board on its official website soon.The important dates for RRC Group D Level 1 Exam 2024 will be updated here after release.

RRB Group D Vacancy 2024 will be announced category-wise by Railway Recruitment Board along with its official notification. Last recruitment was conducted for 1,03,769 vacancies for the posts of Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Helper/Assistant, Assistant Pointsman, Level-I posts. Below is the tabulated data for the Zone wise & Category wise vacancy distribution for Railway RRB Group D 2022 Exam.

The selection process for various Group D posts will include three stages as below:

1. Computer-Based Test (CBT-1)

2. Physical Efficiency Test

3. Medical/Document Verification

Railway Administration reserves the right to conduct the CBT in either single or multi-stage mode. Candidates qualifying in the CBT shall have to undergo a Physical Efficiency Test (PET). It will be followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination. There shall be a negative marking for 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.

The basic salary of candidates selected under RRB Group D Recruitment will be Rs 18,000 . Besides the basic pay, the selected candidates will be provided with other allowances including Dearness Allowance (DA), Daily Allowance, Transport Allowance, House Rent Allowance (HRA), Allowance for Night Duty, Medical Facilities, Overtime Allowance etc. The in-hand salary of RRB Group Posts is Rs. 22,500-Rs.25,380 per month.

Steps to Apply for RRB Group D Vacancies

• Visit the official website http://www.rrbcdg.gov.in/
• Click on the ‘New Registration’ link
• Register for the exam and submit required details like name, date of birth and father’s name, mother’s name, Aadhaar Number, SSLC/Matric registration number, year of passing, mobile number, email ID and then submit the registration form
• Upon registration, candidates need to verify email ID and mobile number through OTP
• Login on the home page using the registration number and password
• In Part I of the application page, candidates had to provide the details of educational qualification, community, gender, religion, Ex-Servicemen, CCAA, Minority, Economically Backward Class and Age Relaxation and other details
• In Part II of the application page, candidates had to indicate his/her priority/preference of the posts
• On completion of application details, candidates were redirected to the payment page using Online Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card/UPI and Offline Challan
• Candidates were required to choose the exam language
• Candidates had to fill in the details of a valid photo ID card
• Enter bank details to get the refund of fees
• Candidates had to upload their scanned images of photograph and signature as per the format and SC/ST candidates were required to upload the category certificates
• Candidates had to agree to the terms and conditions and submit the application form

RRB Group D Level 1 Fee

The candidates who are interested in RRB Group D vacancies have to pay the requisite application fee as per the below-mentioned table-

The eligibility criteria for RRB Group D will be calculated on terms of nationality, educational qualification, and age limit. Only those candidates will be selected for RRB Group D recruitment process who fulfills the eligibility criteria as mentioned below.

Nationality

A candidate must be either:

• A citizen of India, or
• A subject of Nepal, or
• A subject of Bhutan, or
• Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
• A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

RRB Group D Education Qualification

The candidates who had completed their High School (Class 10) from an institution recognized by NCVT/SCVT or held National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) provided by NCVT are eligible to apply for RRB Group D Recruitment Exam.

RRB Group D Age Limit

The candidates who fall in the age group of 18 to 33 years are eligible to apply for RRB Group D exam. Age relaxation is provided as per the norms.

Medical Standards

The CBT Admit card will be released tentatively 10 days before the exam date. The Admit Card for PET will be issued to those candidates who have successfully cleared CBT of RRC Group D Level-I 2024. To login on the official website of Railway Recruitment Board, a candidate is supposed to have:

• Registration Number/Roll Number (पंजीकरण संख्या/रोल नंबर)
• Date of Birth/Password (जन्म तिथि / पासवर्ड)

The admit card for RRB Group D 2024 exam will be issued to candidates in two phases:

• For CBT (CBT के लिए )
• For PET (PET के लिए )

All candidates must go through the guidelines provided on the official website of Railway before downloading his/her admit card.

The candidates must have a look at the previous year's RRB Group D Exam Analysis from the below section to have an idea would be the expected pattern for the upcoming RRB Group D Exam.

Once the exam is over, Railway Recruitment Board will release the provisional answer key with the correct responses to the questions asked in the examination. The candidates will also be given the opportunity to challenge the answer key with a fixed amount. The final answer key will be released after the objections are assessed by the exam authority.  

Railway Recruitment Board will be announcing the result for CBT after the examination for the same has been conducted. Results will be announced for CBT first. Candidates who clear CBT will be allowed to give PET of RRC Group D 2024 Exam. Results for PET will be released after the Physical Test for Men and Women has been successfully conducted by Railway Recruitment Board.

RRB will be releasing the cut-off marks for CBT Exam on its official website along with the result. The candidate has to score more than the cut-off marks to get qualified in the exam. The RRB Group D previous year cut off will be helpful in understanding the level of upcoming exams. Moscow and St. Petersburg present a new tourist pass

Russia has introduced a new tourist pass called PassCity , which will be of use not only to foreign travelers who have come to Russia for a few days, but also to students from overseas and expatriates whose stay extends to a few months and more. PassCity has apps available for Android and iOS with free audio guides in English and Chinese.

PassCity has become Russia's first pass which is valid in two cities at once and covers all the major museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The price for a tourist pass for 3/5/7/10 days varies from $80 (1 person, 3 days - 5190 rubles ) to $230 (2 people, 10 days - 14,390 rubles ). A 90/180/360-day pass costs from $ 64 (1 person, 90 days -  3990 rubles  ) to $160  (2 people, 360 days - 9990 rubles ).  The package for several days was designed for tourists and includes an unlimited number of museum visits per day, as well as public transit. The 3/6/12-month card is meant for temporary residents of the cities and covers one museum visit a day, without access to public transit.

Apart from admission to museums, the pass gets you free coffee in the DoubleB chain of coffee shops , several trips on the airport express in Moscow, and subway rides in St. Petersburg or by taxi ordered through the Yandex.Taxi service.

"You can order the pass online or through the app, and our courier will deliver it where and when you decide, for instance, your hotel, or the railway station where the airport express arrives. Our customers have confirmed that this is a lot more convenient than having to look for a sales office in an unknown city," explains Maksim Ivlev, Voxxter CEO.

Voxxter believes the pass could be useful for tourists who come to Russia to watch upcoming sporting events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Moscow Rail Station (Moskovsky Vokzal)

Like its sister, Leningrad Rail Station in Moscow, Moscow Rail Station was built at the same time as Russia's first intercity railway, the Nikolaevskaya (now Oktyabrskaya) Railroad linking St. Petersburg with Moscow. Both stations were designed by the architect Konstantin Ton and Rudolf Zhelyazevich. Their designs resembled European townhalls of the 12th and 13th centuries, with high clocktowers and false arcades on the ground floors.

The station was originally called the Nicholas Railway Station (Nikolaevskiy Vokzal), and Emperor Nicholas I was one of the first passengers to pass through it on his way to Moscow with his family. For the first few years, the journey was a difficult one to make. Not only were train tickets expensive, but to buy them each passenger had to present a special request to the police, along with their passport, which was only returned when the passenger returned to St. Petersburg.

Despite this, the number of passengers soon meant that the building needed to be extended. However, the first expansion in 1868 also proved inadequate, and in 1912 Vladimir Shchuko won the competition to design a completely new station. As Znamenskaya Ploshchad (now Ploshchad Vosstaniya) had by that time been fully built up, the only way to extend the building was down the tracks. Only the first wing of Shchuko's new building (now ticket offices) had been completed when the project was abandoned due to the outbreak of the First World War, saving Ton and Zhelyazevich's original structure.

During the 1960s, the modern main hall was added to the station, with a bust of Vladimir Lenin in the centre (this was replaced in the 1990s with a bust of Peter the Great). Today, Moscow Station remains one of the busiest in Russia, and the long-proposed high-speed rail line between Russia's two main cities means that it will almost certainly see further reconstruction and expansion soon.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

• Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
• You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
• There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
• Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
• If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
• You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
• You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
