Get the full alternative rock experience when you secure your Rare Creatures tickets today with TicketSmarter. Alternative music or sometimes referred to as alt-rock or simply alternative emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s. Alternative music is in reference to the genre distinction from commercial rock music. In 1988, Billboard introduced alternative music into their charts. Early versions can be found dating back to the 1960s with the Velvet Underground.

Alternative music has helped define new styles of music including indie rock, grunge and noise pop. The music tends to vary from the mainstream as it relates to social context and its sound. The breakthrough of Nirvana in the 1990s brought alternative rock to the mainstream in music. Throughout history, alternative rock has been defined by its rejection of the commercialism of pop culture. However, ironically alt-rock has become so popular, that concert ticket sales have exploded and in many cases surpassed many pop-rock artists. Grab Rare Creatures tickets now so you can experience alternative music live and in person.

Octopuses seen hunting together with fish in rare video — and punching fish that don't cooperate

An octopus hunting with a grouper and a gold-saddle goatfish.

The Summary

  • A new study found that some members of an octopus species hunt cooperatively in groups with fish.
  • Video shows octopuses punching their companion fish to keep them on task and contributing to the hunt.
  • The findings indicate that some octopuses have richer social lives than scientists previously understood.

Octopuses don’t always hunt alone — but their partners aren’t who you’d expect.

A new study shows that some members of the species Octopus cyanea maraud around the seafloor in hunting groups with fish, which sometimes include several fish species at once.

The research, published in the journal Nature on Monday, even suggests that the famously intelligent animals organized the hunting groups’ decisions, including what they should prey upon.

What’s more, the researchers witnessed the cephalopod species — often called the big blue or day octopus — punching companion fish, apparently to keep them on task and contributing to the collective effort.

Octopuses have often been thought to avoid other members of their species and prowl solo using camouflage. But the study suggests that some octopuses have surprisingly rich social lives — a finding that opens a new window into the marvels of undersea life. It’s an indication that at least one octopus species has characteristics and markers of intelligence that scientists once considered common only in vertebrates.

“I think sociality, or at least attention to social information, is way more deep-rooted in the evolutionary tree than we might think,” said Eduardo Sampaio, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the lead author of the research.

“We are very similar to these animals,” he added. “In terms of sentience, they are at a very close level or closer than we think toward us.”

To understand the inner details of octopus lives, researchers dived for about a month at a reef off the coast of Eilat, Israel, and tracked 13 octopuses for a total of 120 hours using several cameras. The team followed the octopuses for 13 hunts, during which they observed groups of between two and 10 fish working with each octopus.

These hunting groups typically included several species of reef fish, such as grouper and goatfish. The octopuses did not appear to lead the groups, but they did punch at fish to enforce social order — most often at blacktip groupers.

“The ones that get more punched are the main exploiters of the group. These are the ambush predators, the ones that don’t move, don’t look for prey,” Sampaio said.

An octopus cyanea hunts with a blue goatfish, while a blacktip grouper lies in wait.

Octopuses would also punch fish to keep the group moving.

“If the group is very still and everyone is around the octopus, it starts punching, but if the group is moving along the habitat, this means that they’re looking for prey, so the octopus is happy. It doesn’t punch anyone,” Sampaio said.

The researchers think fish benefit from such hunting groups because an octopus can reach into crevices where prey hides and root out lunch. The octopus benefits, they believe, because it can simply follow the fish to food, rather than perform what the researchers call speculative hunting.

“For the octopus, it’s also an advantage because it doesn’t need to sample or go around the environment,” Sampaio said. “You can just look at the fish.”

After shooting their video, the researchers fed all of their hunting scenes into software that creates a three-dimensional representation, then used another program to track each animal and log its position in relation to others. The data allowed the researcher to measure how close the creatures remained to one another and which creatures anchored or pulled the group in one direction or another.

The data showed that a particular fish species, the blue goatfish, would roam off and lead the hunting groups in that direction, but the group of fish would linger if the octopus didn’t immediately follow.

The goatfish “are the ones exploring the environment and finding prey,” Sampaio explained. “The octopus is the decider of the group.”

An Octopus cyanea hunts with a blue goatfish while a blacktip grouper lies in wait. The snout of a cornetfish is also visible at the top of the frame.

The researchers did not see evidence that the creatures shared prey. All the species involved are generalists that eat crustaceans, fish and mollusks, but whoever was able to catch the prey got a meal.

Questions remain, however, including whether certain octopuses recognize or prefer to hunt with a favorite fish companion.

“Is there a recognition of the individual?” Sampaio said. “Do I want to follow the blue goatfish or do I want to follow Martha because I’ve hunted with Martha before?”

It’s also not clear if this social hunting behavior is something octopuses learn or if it’s innate.

“In my intuition, I think it’s something they learn, because the smaller octopuses seem to have a higher difficulty to collaborate with fish than the large ones,” Sampaio said.

Jonathan Birch, a professor of philosophy at the London School of Economics who studies animal sentience but was not involved in the new research, said he was impressed by the hours of video evidence the scientists collected and their careful coding of the video to quantify the relationships between the creatures.

“It’s an important step beyond what you get in nature documentaries, where individual behavior will get filmed,” Birch said.

He also appreciated that the study’s observations were made outside a laboratory setting, where a lot of animal cognition research takes place. Octopuses can be difficult to study outside their natural setting. “They just seem to be so much more expressive in the wild and be capable of so much more,” he said.

Some scientists subscribe to a theory of evolution called the social brain hypothesis, which says that primates and other animals evolved large brains to process social information and collaborate with others.

“Octopuses were seen as a problem case because they are intelligent and yet solitary, it was assumed, so researchers puzzled for a long time about what’s going on there,” Birch said.

That left two possibilities: Either octopuses indicated that there were paths to intelligence outside of social information, or scientists were missing a hidden piece of octopus lifestyles that fit the social intelligence theory.

“This study seems to shift the balance a bit towards that second theory,” Birch said. “For at least one species of octopus, there is quite a rich social life of a kind.”

Rare Animals

13 of the world’s rarest animals.

With an estimated 10-14 million species in the world it’s not surprising there are a large number of rare animals you probably haven’t heard of. It’s usually the rarest animals that are also the most endangered species , at most at risk of becoming extinct.

Across the world, ecosystems have been damaged, depleted, and destroyed by humans for several centuries, and the rate of habitat destruction continues to increase. This habitat destruction is one of several key factors in the ongoing extinction of species all around the globe, along with poaching and climate change.

In 1964 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) established their ‘ Red List of Threatened Species ’. The list has come to be regarded as the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of species, with species put into one of nine categories: Not Evaluated, Data Deficient, Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, and Extinct.

Whilst ‘rare animals’ is not an IUCN status, all the rare animals below are taken from species in IUCN’s ‘critically endangered’ category. Here are 13 of the most stunning rarest animals to be found anywhere, shown in descending order of the estimated numbers left in the wild.

Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis)

Estimated population: unknown.

Saola in jungle

Saola deep in the forest

The saola is a large forest-dwelling bovine found only in the Annamite Range of Laos and Vietnam. It’s so rare it’s known as the Asian unicorn – and was only discovered by science in 1992 when remains were found in Vietnam’s Vũ Quang Nature Reserve .

The first photo of a saola was taken in 1999, captured by an automated camera trap set up by a joint WWF and the Vietnam government’s Forest Protection Department. Since then saolas have been kept in captivity for short periods, which allowed the spectacular nature of their discovery accessible to the public at large.

Because of its elusiveness, it’s difficult to put a number on exactly how many saolas there are left, but it’s safe to say that this beautiful animal is critically endangered, and one of the rarest large land animals in the world.

Ili Pika (Ochotona iliensis)

Estimated wild population: 1,000.

Chinese pika on mountain

Chinese pika on mountain

Pika are small, mountain-dwelling mammal found in North America and Asia. There are 29 species in total, and while the North American and most of the Asia pika have healthy, stable populations, the Chinese Ili pika was thought extinct until photographed in 2014 by Weidong Li.

Only discovered in China’s Tianshan mountain range in 1983, Ila pika live on bare, sloping rocks at high elevations where they subsist on grass. Since discovery, their numbers have declined by over 70% , and stand at around 1,000 today. Their demise is due to increasing temperatures driven by climate change which forces them to retreat up to the mountain tops.

Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis)

Estimated population: 800.

orangutan face

Fossil evidence suggests that until 10,000 years ago orangutans lived across much of Southeast Asia – from southern China to Indonesia’s Java. Today there are three species of Orangutan living on the large Southeast Asia islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

Tapanuli orangutans live in central Sumatra, and are believed to be the rarest of all great apes. Satellite imagery combined with nest counting puts the total number of Tapanuli orangutan at around 800 , of which 80% live outside protected areas.

This extremely intelligent animal is critically endangered from the loss, degradation, and fragmentation of their forest habitat.

Cuban Greater Funnel-eared Bat (Natalus primus)

Estimated population: 750.

Cuban greater funnel-eared bat

Cuban greater funnel-eared bat

The entire population of 750 of these rare bats lives in just one cave in Cueva de la Barca on the western tip of Cuba.

The natural degradation of the cave has led researchers to believe that the Cuban greater funnel-eared bat will be an extinct species in the not too distant future. They will be survived by at least 10 other species of closely-related funnel-eared bats, including varieties from Mexico, Trinidad, and the Bahamas

Greater Bamboo Lemur (Prolemur simus)

Estimated wild population: 500.

Greater bamboo lemur

Greater bamboo lemur

As its name suggests, the great bamboo lemur is the largest of Madagascar’s bamboo lemurs, weighing around 2.5 kilograms. They were actually thought to be extinct until the late 1980s, when a population of around 500 were discovered living in the south east of the island close to Ranomafana National Park.

This rediscovered group is critically endangered, threatened by the destruction of its habitat – specifically by the cutting of bamboo which is used as a building material by local communities.

Sumatran Rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)

Estimated wild population: 250.

Sumatran rhino

Sumatran rhino

The Sumatran rhino is the smallest of all rhinoceros species, and along with the Javan rhino is one of the most at-risk rhino species. There are thought to be only around 100 of these creatures left in the wild in Sumatra, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula. Attempts to breed these rhinos in captivity have resulted in only two females reproducing in the last 15 years.

If you do get the chance to see one, they are easily distinguishable as they have a covering of long hair , which helps to keep mud on their body to both regulate their temperature and protect them from insects. This biological feature is one that makes researchers believe the Sumatran rhino is the most closely related rhino species to the extinct

Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli)

Cross river gorilla

Cross river gorilla

Although all gorilla species are vulnerable, the Cross River gorilla is the most at risk of them all – in fact, it’s the most endangered great ape in the world.

Living in the forested hills and mountains of the Cross River region, which forms a border between Cameroon and Nigeria, this gorilla now numbers less than 250 in the wild and just one in captivity.

The threats to this gorilla species are threefold: Habitat loss due to human activities, hunting by locals for bushmeat, and loss of genetic diversity due to living in small groups that rarely interact with each other.

Addax (Addax nasomaculatus)

Estimated wild population: 90.

Addax browsing in desert

Addax browsing in desert

The addax – or white antelope – was endemic to countries across the Sahara Desert in North Africa, but due to hunting over the years their numbers gave dwindled to under 100.

The last surviving addax are the result of breeding programs that have led to conservationists being able to reintroduce the rare animal to wildlife reserves in Tunisia and Morocco. The success of global breeding programs has resulted in thousands in captivity in zoos around the world, though they are still considered critically endangered.

Amur Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis)

Estimated population: 60.

Amur leopard

Amur leopard

Although there are an estimated 200 Amur leopards in zoos, there are thought to be only 60 living in the wild Originally covering much of eastern Asia, they are now found only in the Amur River basin in eastern Russia and north-east China. On the plus side, there has been a bounceback in their population in recent years, leading to hope the health of the species is improving.

As well as being one of the most endangered wild cats, these solitary animals are also one of the most beautiful. They have a thick orangy-yellow coat with long, dense hair patterned in distinctive black splodges and flecks.

The Red Wolf (Canis rufus)

Estimated wild population: 40.

Red wolf in snow

Red wolf in snow

Red wolf are indigenous to the southeast USA, but now limited to a small region of eastern North Carolina where they were reintroduced to the wild in 1987 as part of an ambitious conservation project . They’re still considered a critically endangered species by the IUCN, and it’s estimated there are around 40 individuals left in the wild.

This rare animal is somewhere between a gray wolf and a coyote in size, and are known both for their shyness, and their mating for life behaviour.

Hainan Gibbon (Nomascus hainanus)

Estimated wild population: 25.

Hainan gibbon in a tree

Hainan gibbon in a tree

The stunning Hainan gibbon is the rarest ape in the world – and probably the rarest mammal – with a total population of around 25 individuals . The apes were previously found across eastern China, but they have suffered badly from both hunting and habitat loss over the past hundred years.

Hainan gibbon are now found only in a single patch of forest in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve on China’s Hainan Island. There are only three social groups actively breeding, and along with its small population size, lack of population growth, and tiny range, this species has a bleak long-term outlook.

Vaquita ( Phocoena sinus )

Estimated population: 12.

Vaquita dolphin

Vaquita – the world’s smallest dolphin

The vaquita is an extremely rare dolphin species on the brink of extinction, with an estimated 12 living in the Gulf of California. Females are the larger of the two sexes, and grow to around 1.4 meters – making our list of the world’s smallest animals .

The biggest threat to vaquitas is from the fishing of totoaba, which uses gillnets vaquitas can get tangled in an unable to reach the surface to breathe. In 2016 gillnets were banned in the vaquita’s habitat, but illegal gillnet fishing continues, as does the incidental killing of the handful of vaquitas left in the wild.

South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis)

Estimated wild population: 0 (with approx 100 in captivity).

South China tiger

South China tiger

The South China Tiger (sometimes called the Amoy tiger and Xiamen tiger) possibly extinct in the wild, with no confirmed sightings for 25 years. There are thought to be around 100 in captivity in China where captive breeding programs are keeping the species alive. There is also a successful breeding program in the Laohu Valley private reserve in South Africa.

They are one of the smallest tiger species, weighing between 100 and 200 kilograms, which allowed them to move easily through the dense temperate forests of southeast China. The South China tiger has stripes that are noticeably thicker and spaced further apart than other tiger species, giving them a striking look.

Conservation in action

It’s important to remember that both the number and makeup of species classified as endangered evolves over time, usually increasing. The predominant reason for species extinction over the past few hundred years is increasing human-wildlife conflict, but there are some pockets of good news stories where species are actually removed from the endangered list.

One great example is the western South Atlantic humpback, where an estimated 2 million population were hunted to the brink of extinction in the 19th and 20th centuries for their meat, blubber, and oil. In 1986 a pause in commercial whaling due to low numbers was combined with a global ban on the trade of whale products and limits put on subsistence whaling. The result today is that western South Atlantic humpbacks are on their way back to pre-hunting numbers.

A similar story can be told for dozens of other endangered species, but by far the majority of endangered species continue to move towards extinction.

Two young eagle-eyed brothers spot rare one-in-two-million blue lobster ‘bandit’ in grocery store fish tank.

A pair of eagle-eyed upstate New York brothers are credited for saving the life of an extremely rare lobster.

The Morales boys, Parker, 4, and Zachary, 3, were shopping with their mother at Market 32 in Clifton Park in Saratoga County when they spotted a blue lobster for sale in its lobster tank.

Blue lobster

“We were walking and we went up to the tank and Parker goes, ‘Hey! That one is blue!’ And I thought, ‘Wow. That’s weird.’ And I took a picture of it,” their mother, Danielle Morales, told CBS6Albany .

Morales sent the photo of the blue lobster — which is so rare that the chances of spotting one is said to be about one in two million — to the Via Aquarium in Schenectady via Facebook.

While she waited for the aquarium to reply, she told store employees they might want to hold off on peddling the rare crustacean, which gets its hue due to a genetic defect .

“Once we contacted the aquarium and had the momentum, I went up to the counter and was like, ‘Hey, The aquarium is going to call you. You might not want to sell that one!'” Morales told the outlet.

The siblings named the lobster, a male, Bandit, after the character on the animated kids’ series “Bluey.”

blue lobster

Bandit was taken to the aquarium, which is planning to debut him to the public next week.

Aquarium employees have yet to determine whether or not Bandit is a true blue lobster, since its shade is not as vibrant as it might be.

“We’re thinking it’s possibly because of diet in this case,” Cassidy Livingston of Via Aquarium told the outlet.

“There’s also a chance that he got more blue in color because of what he’s eating. Like, if they’re eating a lot of shrimp, that can cause color changes.”

Reputation Tips

  • Firewalker Ruins :This area is the easiest to solo and has fast respawns in a small area, but the reputation granted per mob is low. It's pretty efficient to group up, pull everything to the center, and AoE.
  • Blazing Way : This area is convenient if you are trying to also kill Leafmender , Huolon , and Cinderfall . Burning Berserker is the easiest mob to kill when soloing. The mobs in general are pretty spread out, except by Shrine of the Black Flame, which will require a party for the Eternal Kilnmaster . A neat detail is that these mobs are really into herbing--they drop herb-themed items, cast Forage , and have lots of alchemy elixirs lying around in Ordon Supplies .
  • Ordon Sanctuary : The mobs here grant the most reputation but are the hardest to kill between Eternal Kilnmaster 's Blazing Blow and High Priest of Ordos using the most annoying abilities from each other Yaungol. You will need a group for this as well as a legendary cape on one character to jump across the bridge gap. There are creative ways to make it across the gap without a cape, but since the mobs are difficult to kill, it is hard to find a group while undergeared.
  • Battle Standard of Coordination / Battle Standard of Coordination : Grants 15% bonus reputation for all guild members within 100 yards. Banner will despawn if you get too far away or die, so consider picking up Banner of Cooperation / Banner of Cooperation and Standard of Unity / Standard of Unity as well as backups.
  • WHEE! : Grants 10% reputation gains for up to an hour if you ride the Darkmoon Carousel. Downside is that this buff can only be acquired during the Faire, and if you die, you have to return to the Faire to get it.
  • Mr. Popularity : Guild perk that increases reputation from killing monsters and completing quests by 10%.
  • Holiday buffs that stack with other reputation buffs, like Unburdened for Hallow's End.
  • The Last Emperor : Speak with Emperor Shaohao. +250 reputation
  • Timeless Nutriment : Consume a ripe crispfruit, sand-covered egg, charged crystal, huge yak roast, roasted seed, or fire poppy on the Timeless Isle. +250 reputation
  • Wayshrines Of The Celestials : Find an active Time-Lost Shrine and request a blessing from the Celestials. +250 reputation
  • Drive Back The Flame : Earn an Honored Reputation with Shaohao by defeating yaungol forces on the Timeless Isle. +250 reputation
  • The Archiereus Of Flame : Summon and defeat the Archiereus of Flame. +250 reputation

Facts About Animals

10 of the Rarest Animals in the World

Animals can be rare for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they’re hard to reach because they live at the top of a very rocky mountain, or the bottom of a very deep sea.

Other times there just aren’t many left. Sometimes, it’s the preferred method of cooking.

Endemism is the state of being a species found in a single defined geographic location , such as an island, state, nation, country or other defined zone; and many of the rarest animals are endemic species, threatened or otherwise.

Others are simply rare because they’re about to become extinct, many are both.

Rarest Animals in the World

We’ve put together a list of some of the animals you’re least likely to encounter in the wild, for various reasons, and if it isn’t obvious, there’s no easy way to rank them, so consider these extremely rare animals listed in no particular order.

10. Fiery Dink Frog

Our first entry is named after the phenomenon of going for a pee right after chopping chillis. It’s a frog, and as the name suggests it looks a bit like a burn victim.

This frog exists only inside a tiny blob of Panama, above 1500m. They’re endemic to a volcanic cone called Cerro Santiago, and since it’s too hot and dry to climb down, they’re stuck up there, looking all sore.

Fiery Dink Frog

This exceptionally tiny range is the only place you’re able to see them in the wild, which makes them incredibly rare already, but to make things worse, they refuse to come lower than four meters above the ground, so even if you go there, they’re hard to find.

Despite occupying the same land as indigenous tribes for millennia, this frog is now threatened by the destruction of its habitat as a conversion to agricultural land. It is unprotected and critically endangered. 1

9. Robert Paulson Spider

This ambush spider sits in hidden webs, similar to the funnel web, but built into the crevices in trunks of trees.

These are such rare spiders that there isn’t a description of the male on record, and only the female is described. She’s about 9cm long, mostly shiny, and she lives only on the largest island in the Seychelles, Mahé.

Robert Paulson Spider

It was first discovered in 1911, and since then nobody has spent much time learning anything about it. What we know so far is that there are only about three subpopulations on the island, and the largest of them contains 12 spiders, making this one of the rarest animals on Earth.

Since there is no official common name listed for this species, we have given it one. Its name is Robert Paulson. And it should be remembered before it’s too late, as they are considered critically endangered. 2

8. Seventy-four Seabream

This species was doomed to obscurity the moment it was named, and despite its memorable moniker, it hardly shows up on a Google search at all.

Seventy-four Seabream

This is a fairly small predator of fish and squid, found in reefs down the East coast of Southern Africa, along which it takes on spawning migrations, heading to deeper water reefs as far down as 100 meters to lay its millions of eggs.

Despite this fecundity, this fish has been ‘harvested’ almost to extinction, as the spawning aggregations were predictable to human hunters, who overfished them.

A slow rate of reproduction and growth hinders their recovery, and they’re also listed as critically endangered.

This cute little bird is a member of a curious group of endemic finches known as the Hawaiian honeycreepers. Perhaps jealous of the attention Darwin was giving to the Galapagos gang, these ones evolved even more diverse and unusual characteristics as a result of their isolation on the island.

Instead of a seed crusher or insect grabber, their frontal appendage has evolved to feed on nectar, and so is more similar to that of a hummingbird. This is a recognisable bird that occupies a space in local legend and culture, and while it’s not as rare as some of the other members of its family, it’s a good figurehead for the troubles they all face.

ʻIʻiwi

Its call is said to sound like balls dropping in water, the rubbing of balloons together, and the squeaking of a rusty hinge.

Once widespread across the islands, its range has been restricted to Hawaii island, with a handful left on Maui and Kauai, where they follow the seasonal flowers up and down the mountains. 3

6. Philippine Crocodile

The largest of these crocodiles ever recorded was around three meters long, but most are significantly smaller. This is a relatively petite crocodile and one that isn’t well known.

Male and female Philippine crocodiles guard their young after hatching, and the adults hunt in rivers and creeks, as well as ponds and marshes from the sea, all the way up to 850 meters.

Philippine Crocodile

These crocs have a larger range than many on this list, but they tend to occupy it at very low densities, so they’re rare to come across.

They’re also critically endangered, as their chosen hunting grounds are being converted by human development, and they get entangled in fishing gear. The species is critically depleted, suggesting a low chance of recovery: there may only be 100 left in the wild.

5. La Hotte Bush Frog

As if the Dink frog wasn’t hot enough, we have another entry for the amphibians, this time coming from the canopy of the Southwestern Haiti forests.

This is a treefrog, dependent on transitional pine-cloud forest, and with a deep reliance on bromeliad flowers, to which it descends for safety during the day, and into which it lays its eggs during spawning season.

La Hotte Bush Frog

This is a very sensitive animal, even by amphibian standards, and can be used as an early warning sign of things to come.

Logging and habitat conversion are destroying its habitat, and being reliant on primary forest, even recovery of the young canopy is not enough to protect the species.

The populations are severely fragmented, and this is now a rare species to see in the wild.

4. Madagascar Serpent Eagle

This is a bird that’s so hard to see, that people thought it was already extinct. Between 1930 and 1977, nobody had spotted one at all, and it wasn’t until 1993, and two more sightings, that it was reconfirmed as alive and well.

Madagascar Serpent Eagle

Since then, conservationists have scrambled to figure out how to secure its spot in the ecosystem. This bird has a reputation for avoiding photographs, despite being spotted several times.

It’s so elusive that we don’t know much about its range or how many of them there are. 4

3. Lord Howe Island Stick Insect

These arboreal arthropods are also known as ‘tree lobsters’, but are not actually lobsters, or indeed crustaceans at all. They’re stick insects, and some say they’re the rarest insects on Earth.

Of course, the rarest insects on Earth likely won’t be ones that we know about, but we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Lord Howe Island Stick Insect

This is another animal whose existence was questioned until they were rediscovered in 2001, on a 6-million-year-old chunk of rock sticking out of the ocean.

Specimens were hurriedly gathered in zoos to begin a breeding program and have become a mascots for the importance of insect conservation everywhere. 5

2. Speartooth Shark

Sharks are elusive animals at the best of times, but in environments where there’s no way to see them, they can be even harder to get to know.

The rarest shark species are likely obscure deep-ocean monsters that we’ll never discover, but the rarest that we know about is likely the Speartooth.

Speartooth Shark

This shark doesn’t share the ocean with its marine cousins but occupies murky tropical rivers in Australia and New Guinea. Until recently, no mature individuals had ever been seen, and this species remains exceptionally rare and hard to find.

The IUCN believes there are no more than 2,500 adults, somewhere, but hasn’t got as much confidence around their specific location.

Recent tagging should bring in new info about this species, but the chances of you ever crossing paths with these 2.6m fish and noticing are very slim! 6

1. Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle

The Yangtze river is the tragic venue for some of the rarest and most critically endangered animals on Earth, so it’s not surprising to find our final entry here.

This is a highly camouflaged, sedentary animal that hides in the mud, so is difficult to find even if you know where it is, but the long generational time of this animal (up to 100 years) and its slow rate of reproduction have made it very vulnerable to reduction.

Almost nothing is known about the juveniles, but the adults and eggs are hunted for food, and widespread drainage has removed much of its habitat.

The IUCN suggests there may only be three mature individuals left in the wild. 7

Final Thoughts

There are many reasons for a species to be rare . Of course, we humans are responsible for a lot of them, but the isolating of a species by environmental factors is the main reason there are so many endemic species and one of the key contributors to our favourite rare and unique animals.

Being stuck on an island for tens of millions of years, or trapped at the top of a mountain where it’s too hot to come down, forces communities to adapt and to change over time until they’re the only ones of their kind anywhere in the world.

That’s why islands are sanctuaries for the rarest and most unique species on Earth, and it’s also why it’s so important to prevent invasive species from, well, invading them.

But more and more, we’re finding that rare species are becoming critically endangered through the loss of their habitats or the rampant destruction of their communities through fishing.

Rare animals are valuable, not only as a novelty item to tick off in a collection, but as a member of an intricate web of ecology that spans the globe, and without the integrity of this web, the entire system can, and will, come down.

These Are 10 Amazing Animals To See While Visiting The Galapagos

Tour the otago peninsula to see new zealand's only albatross colony, see european bison & more at scotland's highland wildlife park.

  • Tuatara: Last surviving reptile order in New Zealand's sanctuaries, now one of the rarest wildlife in the world.
  • Galápagos Penguins: Only penguin in the Northern Hemisphere, found in Galápagos Islands, and one of the world's rarest animals.
  • Blue Whale: One of the largest animals in the world known to have lived, becoming increasingly rare in California, Mexico, and Sri Lanka.

There are plenty of unique and fascinating animals to see around the world. Many of these animals are intensively protected and can be seen by visitors in the wild or in sanctuaries (such as the Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary in New Zealand ).

Some of these animals have come back from the brink of extinction (like the American Plains bison) thanks to excellent conservation efforts. Nowadays, there are even plenty of places to see bison in the wild . For wildlife lovers, here are ten of the most unique but rare animals to see around the world.

New Zealand's Tuatara may not look very remarkable, but it is one of the 'living fossils' of the world. They may look like lizards, but they are the last survivors of a completely different reptile lineage - the order Rhynchocephalia.

They were driven extinct on the main islands of New Zealand but clung on in the small offshore islands. Today, they can be seen in a number of wildlife sanctuaries.

  • Where To See: New Zealand's Sanctuaries
  • Remarks: Last Species of A Reptile Order

9 Galápagos Penguins

The Galápagos penguin is the only species of penguin to range north of the equator, mostly on the Galápagos Island of Fernandina Island and the west coast of Isabela Island.

They have developed ways to stay cool and have been able to range this far north thanks to the ocean currents.

  • Where To See: Galápagos Islands
  • Remarks: Only Penguin In The Northern Hemisphere

The Galapagos is one of the best places in the world to see wildlife that has evolved in isolation. These are among the top Galapagos species to see.

8 Blue Whale

While the most popular whales to see on whale-watching tours are humpback whales, it is possible to see the rare blue whales around the world , although they are gradually becoming one of the rarest animal species in the world.

There are thought to be only 10,000 to 25,000 blue whales left in the world, and are split into four subspecies. They have been known to reach lengths of 98 feet (or 30 meters) and weigh as much as 199 tonnes.

  • Where To See: California, Mexico, Sri Lanka
  • Remarks: Largest Animal Known To Have Lived

7 California Condor

The California condor was one of the rarest animals in the world, as it almost went extinct in 1987 (all the remaining wild birds were caught and bred in intensive conservation breeding programs).

They have now been successfully reintroduced to the wild, and the California Condor can be seen in the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park.

  • Where To See: Grand Canyon, Zion National Park
  • Remarks: Largest North American Bird

6 Royal Albatross

The royal albatross is one of the largest seabirds in the world, with an average wingspan of over 9.8 feet or 3 meters. They normally nest in far-flung subantarctic islands where they are rarely ever seen.

One of the very few accessible royal albatross colonies is on the Otago Peninsula of New Zealand, where there are wildlife tours and a visitor center.

  • Where To See: Otago Peninsula, New Zealand
  • Remarks: One Colony Is Visitable On The New Zealand Mainland

The Otago Peninsula is home to the world's only mainland Royal Albatross Colony as well as sea lions and penguins.

5 Leatherback Sea Turtle

The leatherback sea turtle is the largest of the turtles alive today and is the heaviest reptile that is not a crocodilian.

There are tours to see these massive 1,100 lb turtles as they haul themselves onto beaches to lay their eggs. One of the places to see them is in Costa Rica .

  • Where To See: Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica
  • Remarks: Largest Turtle

4 Sumatran Rhinoceros

The Sumatran rhinoceros (related to the Indian rhino above) is the smallest of the living rhinos (one of five living species of rhinos). They are now critically endangered, with only a few hundred of them left (perhaps less than 100), making them one of the rarest species in the world.

They once lived in the rainforests, swamps, and cloud forests of Southeast Asia.

  • Where To See: Indonesia
  • Remarks: Few Rhinos Left in Borneo and Sumatra

3 European Bison

The American Plains bison get most of the attention, but the lesser-known European bison are their even larger cousins.

They were driven to extinction in the wild during the 20th century, but they have now been released back into the wild in Poland, Belarus, and elsewhere (even in Scotland).

  • Where To See: Eastern Europe, Scotland
  • Remarks: Largest European Animal

See European Bison and the best of European wildlife at Scotland's superb Highland Wildlife Park.

2 Przewalski's Horse

Przewalski's horse is the only wild horse species to survive today (all other horses are domesticated). They ranged on the steppes of Central Asia and can now be seen at a distance in the Khustain Nuruu National Park in Mongolia.

They were once extinct in the wild, and now they have been reintroduced.

  • Where To See: Mongolia
  • Remarks: Only Surviving Wild Horse

1 Giant Panda

The giant panda is often seen as the cuddliest bear in the world and one of the symbols of China. They are found in the Sichuan province of China, living on an almost exclusively bamboo diet.

The wild population of the Giant Panda is in the low thousands, and pandas are a popular attraction in Sichuan.
