Since emerging in 2009, YG has projected the voice of the streets into the mainstream and ultimately left his mark as a rapper, actor, entrepreneur, designer, and philanthropist. The Compton native has surpassed 10 billion global streams, over a dozen multi-platinum, platinum and gold certifications, and countless honors. He’s the rare maverick who can stand arm-in-arm with protestors one day, appear on-screen next to an Academy® Award winner the next day, and preside over a fashion runway on another day. He has landed four consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200. Among numerous anthems with social implications, Billboard christened 2016’s politically charged “FDT (F*** Donald Trump)” featuring Nipsey Hussle, one of the “Songs That Defined the Decade.”  In 2020, YG fought back again with the anti-racist “FTP,” of which Variety claimed, “If there’s a music video that captures the Black Lives Matter demonstrations of June 2020, it’s YG’s ‘FTP’.”  He joined the reunited Public Enemy and an all-star cast of collaborators for a show-stopping performance of “Fight The Power” at the BET Awards in 2020. “FTP” was one of five breakout single + video releases in 2020-2021 from YG’s critically acclaimed fifth studio album, My Life 4Hunnid (October 2020) which also included “Laugh Now, Kry Later!”; “SWAG,” “Equinox” featuring Day Sulan, and “Out On Bail.”

In October 2022, YG released his sixth studio album, I GOT ISSUES via Def Jam Recordings. The highly anticipated new album includes features from hip-hop heavyweights such as J. Cole, Post Malone, Nas, Roddy Rich and more. I GOT ISSUES is YG’s first studio album since My Life 4Hunnid (October 2020).  The album debuted at the top of the Rap Albums charts and top 5 on the Billboard 200 albums.

Simultaneously, YG remains a pillar of the community. He donated $100,000 worth of food from his restaurant Fishbone Seafood in honor of Juneteenth. Additionally, he founded the nonprofit 4Hundred Waze. Among various initiatives, the nonprofit provided $10,000 in PPE to Los Angeles families hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic residing in Emergency Crisis Housing. Plus, he built a platform for buzzing artists such as Day Sulan with his 4HUNNID label in partnership with Epic Records. The 4HUNNID brand also comprises a clothing line of the same name owned by YG. Infiltrating high fashion and occupying space in retailers such as Zumiez, and more, the line amplifies his impact. Not to mention, the accomplished actor graced the big screen in White Boy Rick with Academy® Award winner Matthew McConaughey.

YG dropped his sixth studio album I Got Issues last month. He released the first single "Scared Money" featuring J. Cole and Moneybagg Yo in February and followed up with other addictive singles like "Toxic," which samples Mary J. Blige's "Be Happy." YG had the streets talking with his controversial banger "How To Rob a Rapper" featuring D3szn and Mozzy . In the midst of the backlash that occurred following the death of PnB Rock , 50 Cent actually praised YG for dropping a refreshing version of his 1999 song "How To Rob." YG also turned heads with the outrageous video for his single "Run" featuring Tyga , 21 Savage and BIA . In the video, YG and Tyga channeled their inner Kardashian as they dressed up like Kim and Khloe to rob a bank. The song didn't end up on the album. Check out the full list of tour date below. The highly anticipated new album, which was released September 30, includes features from hip-hop heavyweights such as J. Cole , Post Malone , Nas , Roddy Rich, and more. The album is available on all digital platforms as well as a special signed CD offering.

YG shared a number of pre-release singles before the album’s arrival, the most recent of which was “Maniac,” which features Hit-Boy. On the single, YG showcases his signature wit while shrugging off the competition, rapping, “Whole lotta millions, so what? I got my plaques right/ I can tell you n____s ain’t eatin’, get your shmack right.”

He also shared singles “Alone,” the J Cole and Moneybagg Yo-featuring “Scared Money,” and “Run” featuring Tyga, 21 Savage, and BIA. The album will also feature “Toxic,” which the star performed for A COLORS Studios . In the COLORS video, YG wears a signature red bandana-laced outfit as he spits against a magenta backdrop. Rocking futuristic shades, the LA-based rapper brings his signature cool to the stripped-down performance.

He showed off his clever bars on the song, spitting: “ I know what she want, she want what’s inside my jeans/ She want my heart with the lock, she wanna throw away the key .”

I Got Issues follows YG’s critically acclaimed 2020 album,  My Life 4Hunnid , which was accompanied by an instantly iconic video for the bouncy opening track “Jealous.” The visuals were released weeks before the 2020 US election and offered a scathing parody of the then-President Donald Trump.

YG, short for Young Gangsta, made a name for himself after releasing his debut single, “Toot It and Boot It,” with Ty Dollar Sign. The single soared through the Billboard Hot 100 and landed at number 67. The successful release helped YG score a record deal with Def Jam Recordings in 2010. Three years later, YG joined Young Jeezy’s imprint, CTE World, and released the single “My Nigga” featuring performances from Jeezy and Rich Homie Quan. The single reached number 19 and earned a five-time platinum certification in the U.S. The single preceded the release of YG’s platinum-selling debut album, My Krazy Life, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B and Hip-Hop charts. Besides the U.S., My Krazy Life charted several other countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, and the U.K.

In 2015, YG dropped the single “Ride Out” with Kid Ink, Tyga, Wale, and Rich Homie Quan. The single, charted in 11 countries, was featured in the Furious 7 soundtrack and earned gold status in the U.S. In the same year, YG released the first single, “Twist My Fingaz,” from his sophomore effort, Still Brazy. The lead single was followed by “FDT” featuring Nipsey Hussle and the double platinum track “Why You Always Hatin?” featuring Drake and Kamaiyah.

This 2023, YG’s the Red Cup Tour will feature tracks from his latest effort, I Got Issues, which spawned two hit singles, “Scared Money,” featuring J.Cole and Moneybagg Yo, and “Toxic.” The album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200 and entered the top 20 of the R&B and Hip-Hop charts.

Politics latest: MSP who could decide Humza Yousaf's fate appears to reveal price for her support

Scotland's first minister says he will fight a vote in his leadership and is "very confident" of winning. Listen to this week's episode of the Electoral Dysfunction podcast while you scroll through the latest updates.

Friday 26 April 2024 18:00, UK

  • Yousaf tells Sky News he'll 'fight' vote of no-confidence and is optimistic of winning

  • Sam Coates explains why the local elections matter
  • Live reporting by Charlotte Chelsom-Pill

Rishi Sunak  sits down this Sunday with Trevor Phillips for a wide-ranging interview ahead of the local elections.

With the Rwanda bill becoming law this week and the PM announcing a commitment to increase defence spending, there's been plenty to talk about.

You can watch it in full from 8.30am on Sunday .

Trevor will also be joined by Labour's shadow health secretary Wes Streeting .

Embattled Humza Yousaf has told Sky News he will not resign as Scotland's first minister.

Pressure has been building on  the SNP leader  after he tore up the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens - prompting a no-confidence motion in his leadership and a threatened knife-edge vote.

However, Mr Yousaf, on a visit to Dundee that was arranged at short notice after he pulled out of a speech in Glasgow, insisted he was getting on with the job and accused the opposition of "playing games".

He said he would be writing to the leaders of all Scottish political parties to seek talks on making a minority government work.

He told Sky's Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies : "I intend absolutely to fight that vote of no confidence, I've got every intention of winning that vote of no confidence.

"And let me say to the opposition for minority government to work in the interest of the people of Scotland also requires the opposition to act in good faith."

Humza Yousaf's future as first minister is hanging in the balance ahead of a motion of no confidence next week.

Now, as leader of a minority government, his fate may be hanging on just one vote - that of a former SNP leadership rival.

We take a look at how:

The numbers

In the Scottish parliament, the SNP has 63 seats out of 129 , two short of an outright majority;

The Conservatives have  31;

Labour has 22;

The Greens have  seven;

The Liberal Democrats have four;

The Alba Party has one ;

There is also one presiding officer Alison Johnstone, who is both an MSP and Scotland's equivalent of the Commons speaker.

How the numbers are expected to fall

The motion of no confidence was brought by the Scottish Conservatives.

The Greens, Labour and the Lib Dems have all said they are backing the motion.

That would translate into 64 votes against the first minister versus 63 SNP votes.

So the one Alba vote is expected to be key.

How it may all come down to one ... Ash Regan

Once an SNP leadership rival to Mr Yousaf, Ash Regan defected to Alex Salmond's Alba Party last October.

If she backs Mr Yousaf then that would mean both sides have 64 votes.

Ms Johnstone would then be expected to vote in favour of the status quo, so the first minister would survive.

But if Ms Regan votes against Mr Yousaf, then the opposition parties will have 65 votes against the SNP's 63, and the first minister would lose.

He wouldn't be compelled to resign in this situation, but he'd be under huge pressure to step aside.

More to come

And remember, Scottish Labour have lodged a separate motion of no confidence in the Scottish government.

Alba have said it won't back that motion.

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf is battling to save his job as he faces a knife-edge no-confidence vote.

The SNP leader triggered a crisis at Holyrood after he dramatically brought the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens to an end.

The backlash has plunged Mr Yousaf's future into doubt, although party colleagues insist he will not resign.

How did we get here?

The Bute House Agreement - signed back in 2021 and named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh - brought the Green Party into government for the first time anywhere in the UK.

It gave the SNP a majority at Holyrood when the votes of its MSPs were combined with those of the seven Green members, and also made Green co-leaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater junior ministers.

Without it, the SNP would need to have operated as a minority administration at Holyrood.

What caused the relationship to sour?

There had been mounting tensions between the largest party at Holyrood and their junior partners in government.

The Greens were angered at the SNP-led administration's recent decision to ditch a key climate change target.

That, combined with the decision to pause the prescription of new puberty blockers to under-18s at at Scotland's only gender clinic, resulted in the Greens announcing they would have a vote on the future of the power-sharing deal.

The 2 May local elections will see more than 2,600 seats at stake across 107 English councils.

Labour's Sadiq Khan and Andy Burnham are among the 10 mayors up for re-election.

Those in Blackpool South will also be voting for their next MP after ex-Tory Scott Benton broke Commons lobbying rules, triggering a by-election.

With the Conservatives lagging behind Labour in the polls, the outcome will offer some insight on how voters in England and Wales feel ahead of the general election.

On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson is joined by deputy political editor Sam Coates to discuss why the elections are so important for the prime minister's future and where the key political backgrounds are.

By Daniel Dunford , senior data journalist

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.

See what's happening where you are here:

With the local elections less than a week away, deputy political editor Sam Coates explains why they matter and what they might tell us about the upcoming general election.

Ash Regan - the MSP who could decide the future of Humza Yousaf - has appeared to name her price for her support in next week's no-confidence vote.

She has said, in a letter to Alba Party members, that investment in the Grangemouth refinery will be a key condition of her backing the first minister.

The refinery is currently due to shut as early as next year and move to being an import and export terminal.

Alba has launched a a campaign to sustain jobs at the refinery.

"A sign of good faith would be a significant government investment, reinforcing the campaign to save the Grangemouth refinery from closure," she says in her letter.

"I am requesting the undertaking to produce such an initiative in the early course.

"I am hopeful that the first minister will commit to such an initiative in the near future as a sign of our shared dedication to Scotland's welfare."

Ms Regan was once part of the SNP and ran in the contest to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as leader last year, the contest Mr Yousaf won.

She defected to Alex Salmond's Alba Party in October.

The battle for a town that no one there wants.

Sky News is reporting from Grimsby in the run-up to the general election as one of its Target Towns - a key constituency prized by both Conservatives and Labour - Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

But it turns out that Grimsby doesn't really want them.

It hasn't always been a town doused in apathy.

In 2016, 70% of people here voted to leave the EU - one of the highest results in the country - and in the 2019 election, the constituency turned Tory for the first time since the Second World War.

But five years on, polling by Sky News found that since then, the number of people saying they "almost never" trust the British government to place the needs of the nation above the interests of their own party has nearly doubled - from 26% to 49%.

It's a stark but bleak view. Voters described both leaders as uninspiring and uninteresting.

When asked what they make of the current prime minister, words like "weak" and "performative" were used.

Voters couldn't make their minds up about the Labour leader, saying they were unsure about him or his policies.

The lack of a clear dividing line between the two parties could be a problem in the general election, especially as both parties have been trying to show a bit more leg this week ahead of a fully-fledged election campaign.

Labour has shown a hint of more radical policies, with their announcement on aiming to nationalise railways within five years.

But have they waited a bit too long to impress the people of Grimsby?

The Conservatives ratified their Rwanda policy into law, but voters here weren't hugely enthused by that either, with one member of the audience tonight proclaiming they care much more about housing and the environment.

They asked - why is the centre of political debate about Rwanda and a policy we don't really care about?

Apathy might override this election.

By  Jennifer Scott , political reporter

Voters in Grimsby - one of Sky News's election Target Towns - have been offering their views on politics, politicians and "broken promises".

The electoral battle in Grimsby and Cleethorpes,  the Target Towns , will be fierce. Labour will need an 11.7 point swing to win this newly-merged constituency back from the Conservatives.

In 2019, residents in Grimsby voted Tory for the first time since the end of the Second World War. The old Cleethorpes constituency was always more of a bellwether, having voted Conservative since 2010.

However, it has shed some of its rural, Conservative-voting residents in the merger.

Speaking on the  Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge , small business owner Shannon said she might not vote in the next general election later this year as she "just can't trust anything anybody says".

She said she has felt this way since Brexit - something Grimsby was overwhelmingly in support of - because "we were promised 'x' and 'y' and it hasn't happened, so I'm just totally disengaged from it".

Asked whether local MPs on the panel - Conservative Lia Nici and Labour's Melanie Onn - could change her mind, Shannon said "possibly", but reiterated how let down local people feel.

"We're promised a lot, but it's never delivered," she said. "Talk of things happening... and then it doesn't happen and people are just fed up... have been told this is what we're going to get, but it doesn't actually happen. And that's why people have just lost faith."

A nature photography tour of Madagascar, part 2: The Red Tsingy

In the last article, I surveyed the diverse and beautiful wildlife of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park . Today, I'd like to continue the tales of my Madagascar trip with a visit to the very north of the island.

Getting to the Red Tsingy is a bit of a task. Its location at the northern tip of Madagascar, together with the lack of adequate roads from the center of the island, means that you have to fly to the coastal town of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez). From there, it's a 2.5–3 hour drive to the park entrance, where you get the permit and hire a person to accompany you on your visit. If you wish to avoid the long daily drives, there is a very nice camp with relatively luxurious tents, which allows much quicker access to the Tsingy.

Before continuing, I'd like to explain what the Red Tsingy even is. "Tsingy" in Malagasy means "the place where one cannot walk barefoot." This pertains mostly to the Grey Tsingy, which is found in the Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park, located hundred of miles away, in the west of the country. The dark, karstic Tsingy De Bemaraha is indeed extremely sharp and hard, and I wouldn't dream of climbing them barefoot, but the Red Tsingy (or Tsingy Rouge in French) is a totally different phenomenon.

Not karstic, not hard or sharp and extremely gentle to the point that it's forbidden to touch them for fear of harming the delicate structures, The Red Tsingy are basically dried-up pinnacles composed of laterite and iron oxide-rich soil, which are the result of erosion, caused by the massive deforestation practiced throughout Madagascar. As always, deforestation eliminates the plants' ability to hold the soil in place, which leaves it vulnerable to being swept by rain and wind. The remaining shapes are made smooth by years of being sanded down by winds, which leaves truly wonderful, almost organic-looking shapes. New structures keep being formed and unveiled every year.

There are several sections in the area with short driving distances between them. Some areas are smaller and can be covered in one session, and some require much more time to traverse and shoot. As a regular tourist, the area can be seen in its entirety in one day, but if you're coming to shoot, I recommend spending at least three days exploring the area well enough to get good compositions of the Tsingy. Another problem is the opening hours of the park; it opens after sunrise and closes before sunset, so you need a special permit to stay there for sunset and post-sunset glow.

Shooting the Red Tsingy is, surprisingly, quite challenging. In general, I find that the more compositional elements an area has, the harder it is to find the really good images. Since the Tsingy are usually very closely packed, some of them can get in the way and ruin an otherwise good composition. The fact that the Tsingy are all the same color makes it difficult to create separation between the photographic elements. The photographer thus needs to actively search for compositions with different colored elements, which happens, for example, when the ground is different in color from the structures.

There are many other elements and factors that must be considered when shooting in the park. One of these is the relatively short time we have with good light. The sun is very harsh in Madagascar, especially in the north (since it's closer to the equator), and drops very fast before sunset. This means the light changes quickly in quality and that the sun can be difficult to incorporate into your images.

Another factor is the critical need to be aware of yourself when standing close to the Tsingy. They are very fragile, and hurting them must be avoided to preserve the park's beauty. It's often compositionally desirable to shoot from very close distances, but extra care must be taken. Focus-stacking is sometimes needed when some of the elements are very close to the camera.

The last problem is the lack of background elements. As you may remember from my composition series , a combination of near and far elements is often helpful in order to create a sense of depth in our two-dimensional image. In Tsingy Rouge National Park, the background is usually red slopes which climb to meet flat plains - not exactly the equivalent of Patagonia's glorious mountain ranges. This leaves the photographer with the choice to either have no background elements (perhaps apart from sky and clouds), or to include the background and risk lack of depth perception in the image, due to the elements being similar in color and texture.

In the next article in this series, I'll talk about photography in the wonderful Kirindy Forest, a private reserve holding spectacular wildlife and a very nice landscape.

Thanks for sharing your struggles with composition in this type of landscape. Capturing the compelling real-world in front of the lens while struggling to wedge that square peg into the round hole of classical composition can be frustrating. My images like that get filed under a category called "canvas": beautiful though not an object of conscious contemplation.

Thanks for posting the article Erez ! It is a privilege to be able to experience some of what you see and at the same time get some good photography advice. Amazing landscape and the natural lighting brings out the structures. Look forward to your next articles already.

I miss a banana for scale. Serious: most of the pictures leave you clueless about the size, and that's not a good thing in landscape photography.

I agree. Scale is, to me, the single most important element in landscape work.

Eroded landscapes can make compelling images, but it's truly horrendous that this is all that remains of regions that were once blanketed in faunistically rich forests.

So much incredible biodiversity destroyed as a result of uneducated land management.

I was going to make a similar comment. What a depressing article!

Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris have officially made their red carpet debut as a couple.

The “One Tree Hill” alum, 41, was photographed exchanging a loving glance with the former soccer player as they walked the red carpet for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner together on Saturday.

The pair also wore big smiles as they hugged for photos.

At one point, Bush leaned in to give her girlfriend a peck on the cheek.

The “Chicago P.D.” star sported a Harbison strapless black gown with gold accents, while Harris, 38, wore a black shimmery tweed blazer and a pair of black trousers from the same brand.

They both paired their ensembles with some gold jewelry from Briony Raymond.

Harris completed her look with Saint Laurent shoes and Bush paired hers with Aquazzura heels.

On Thursday, the actress publicly came out as queer in an essay for Glamour Magazine, detailing her budding romance with the retired athlete following her divorce from Grant Hughes.

How Zendaya Became Hollywood’s Reigning Red Carpet Queen

Red-carpet fashion experts give us the dish on why we can’t stop talking about the “Challengers” star’s clever, campy press tour gowns.

For weeks, it seems, the name on everybody’s lips has been Zendaya . Coming into the Challengers press tour, we all knew that Queen Z would show up to every red carpet ready to serve. After all, the looks she used to promote past films like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dune: Part Two are still etched into our brains. Still, the eye-popping green and white ensembles she and stylist Law Roach have put together this year feel like their magnum opus; night after night, photo after photo, they’ve had us basically screaming “game, set, match!”

(Is that the correct usage of that term? I’ll be the first to admit that my interest in tennis began when Luca Guadagnino announced this movie, and it will end after it premieres this weekend.)

A close up photo of Zendaya's shoes

From her tennis ball stilettos , to her preppy white halter dress appropriately adorned with tiny tennis rackets, to her 2013 Louis Vuitton green and white checkered mini jacket dress , Zendaya has nailed the perfect balance of preppy and campy with each and every Challengers outing. But what is it that makes her red carpet fashions so captivating in the first place?

According to the experts I spoke with, much of the appeal comes from her ability to play with a theme in both elegant and cheeky ways. It also doesn’t hurt that Zendaya looks like a model.

Journalist and The Daily Beast’s Obsessed contributor Esther Zuckerman, who wrote the book on red-carpet couture with Beyond the Best Dressed: A Cultural History of the Most Glamorous, Radical, and Scandalous Oscar Fashion , kept returning to a specific word to describe Zendaya’s looks: purposeful.

Looking back on all of Zendaya’s most memorable get-ups—like the gorgeous Vivienne Westwood gown that she wore to the 2015 Oscars , the archival 1995 Thierry Mugler cyborg suit she wore for Dune: Part Two , and her many, many Challengers fits —Zuckerman observed that Zendaya and Law Roach are deliberate and creative in how they craft a whole, cohesive outfit from head to toe. It’s not just about the gown, or the shoes, or the accessories; all of it is part of one well-executed vision. And unlike some celebrities who tend to rely heavily on their stylists, Zuckerman believes Zendaya plays an active role in shaping her visual brand.

“It’s very thoughtful. It’s very creative,” Zuckerman said of the collaboration. “It’s like two artists coming together.”

Beyond how put-together the outfits are, their real innovation is how they transform whatever movie Zendaya might be promoting into an aesthetic playground. It’s not unheard of for a movie’s stars to dress up in specifically targeted ways; Margot Robbie spent the entire Barbie press tour recreating the doll’s most iconic looks, and Zuckerman wagers that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will be wearing green and pink for the foreseeable future, until Wicked premieres in November. Still, what we see from Zendaya and Law Roach feels different.

“As opposed to theme dressing, it’s sort of like variations on a theme,” Zuckerman said. “We’re taking the idea of ‘sci-fi fashion’ or ‘tennis fashion’ and spinning it out into something new.”

One could argue that theme dressing for promotional purposes has its roots in the early days of the Oscars, when studio designers dressed their stars for the big night. (Celebrity stylists weren’t a thing yet.) Elizabeth Castaldo Lundén—a fashion and cinema scholar who wrote the book Fashion on the Red-Carpet: A History of the Oscars, Fashion and Globalisation —noted that while fashion always had its place on the red carpet, interest surged in the 1950’s when the Oscars became televised. Back then, she said, it was not uncommon for stars to hit the red carpet wearing dresses that had been made for the film they were promoting.

“Today,” Castaldo Lundén said, “it’s much more complex because there is a synergy in these promotional events, in which you’re promoting several brands.”

When a star like Zendaya turns up on a red carpet to promote their film, they’re really working on three levels: Beyond promoting the movie, as stars have always done, they’re also promoting their own personal brands as well as the designer of whichever designer they might be wearing. If they’re really lucky, they might have a brand ambassadorship deal with a designer like Zendaya does with Louis Vuitton.

A photo of Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and Mike Faist

“So the business has diversified in which they’re thinking about the movie, but they’re also thinking about how they can profit from the fashion industry,” Castaldo Lundén explained. In some cases, a celebrity can only wear the brand they’ve got a deal with—which, to Castaldo Lundén, feels not unlike the old days, when the studios controlled their stars’ images like commodities. Swap out studios for fashion designers, and it’s basically the same thing.

The key to Zendaya’s success, then, might be how comfortably she’s able to strut between these two worlds—cinema and fashion. Her talent as an actress gets her the meaty on-screen roles, and afterward, her appearance and style make her one of the most consistently striking figures on the red carpet.

Unlike some stars, who will just throw on the gown their stylist or allied fashion brand gives them and be done with it, Zendaya and Roach seem to thoughtfully plan each press tour. The Spider-Man era saw Zendaya wearing a sparkly webbed dress one night, a Dr. Octopus-like Roberto Cavalli gown on another, and a green and purple Valentino ensemble on the Graham Norton Show. For Dune: Part Two , she went high-fashion with cut-out dresses and 3D gold pieces and forward-thinking shapes. And for Challengers , she embraced a little more levity with bright colors and playful cuts.

To Zuckerman, the mixture of new, forward-thinking looks with archival pieces is what’s really fascinating. “They’re looking into fashion history in addition to pushing forward,” she said. It helps, she added, that Zendaya looks the way she looks, which means that “designers are lining up to dress her.” As Castaldo Lundén put it, “She checks a lot of boxes that fit both the old way of thinking about fashion and the fashion industry and the new way of thinking.

A photo of Zendaya

“That and being able to be playful and to like dressing up makes a very good cocktail for success,” Castaldo Lundén said. If a less traditionally modelesque actress were to show to an afterparty in a neon dress with a tennis ball sticking out of her stomach in the middle, would we all be talking about it the same way, she wondered? Perhaps not.

Sadly, Zendaya does not have any further film releases on the horizon besides Dune: Messiah, which will presumably take a couple years. Alas, we’ll have to settle for her immaculate awards show looks to tide us over until she finds a new movie to ignite her thematic creativity. Until then, we’ll always have those tennis ball heels.

A Queens councilwoman wants to supply all Big Apple firehouses and police precincts with thin “red-line” and “blue-line” American flags in response to leftists claiming they’re fascist symbols.

Republican Joann Ariola collected 53 of the tribute flags from generous New Yorkers since beginning an online campaign two weeks ago.

The councilwoman already delivered blue-line flags to  five Queens police precincts  and red-line flags to four Queens firehouses, she told The Post.

Joann Ariola

“Far left activists are trying to turn the public against our first responders and sow chaos in this city,” said Ariola. “This campaign is a show of support for our first responders, to let them know that no matter what, the people of this city stand behind them.”

Ariola began her effort two weeks ago, in response to a Post report about an FDNY deputy chief ordering an East Village ladder company to remove a “red line” American flag honoring the squad’s six members killed on 9/11.

The request came after a neighborhood resident called the flag “fascist,” and Councilwoman Carlina Rivera (D-Manhattan) questioned whether it was a “politically charged symbol.”

The department was following a 2020 FDNY rule prohibiting “altered” versions of the American flag on department property, which was implemented under then-Commissioner Daniel Nigro during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests.

News of the flag removal March 22 sparked immediate outrage on social media, and hours later the FDNY reversed the decision.

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh confirmed to The Post she “unequivocally support[s]” firefighters displaying the tribute flags.

Red-line flag

“The redline flag honors firefighters who lost their lives protecting our city,” she said. “We appreciate Councilwoman Ariola’s efforts in offering this flag to firehouses who will fly it proudly.”

The Police Department doesn’t have rules prohibiting blue-line flags on NYPD property.

Commanding officers at the 100 th , 102 nd , 104 th , 106 th and 112 th precincts in Queens have accepted blue-line flags honoring cops killed or injured in the line of duty, according to Ariola, who plans to expand the giveaway citywide.

Councilwoman Carlina Rivera

Rivera previously insisted to The Post she only reached to the FDNY about Ladder Co. 11’s tribute flag because a constituent complained about it and that she has a “strong” relationship with the firehouse.

However, Rivera has a history of being critical of cops, including voting to defund  the NYPD by $1 billion in 2020 and routinely ripping police officers that same year during the Black Lives Matters protests.

Rivera did not return messages.

Sadiq Khan atttends Eid celebrations in Trafalgar Square, 20 April 2024.

Elected mayors have made their mark, but still Westminster hogs power. That’s a national embarrassment

Tony Travers

Devolution has been too cautious, and England has less say about community affairs than almost any other democracy

Tony Travers is a visiting professor in the LSE department of government and a director of LSE London

A ll the bigger British political parties are in favour of devolution, yet it proves oddly difficult to deliver. England is a remarkably centralised country, with the UK government responsible for setting every tax, including the annual cap on council tax. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are also, despite their devolved status, heavily centralised within their own national systems of government.

It is exactly 50 years since the major reform of local government structure in England and Wales. Prior to the 1974 changes , there were 1,245 councils in England; after the reforms were implemented, the number of councils was slashed to just 412. Today there are 317 councils, and the number continues to fall as the result of a near-continual reorganisation, which has turned two-tier counties – where there were county councils plus districts within them – into one or more unitary councils, where a single council provides all municipal services. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, after more recent reforms, now have a single tier of large municipalities.

The pursuit of efficient and effective councils leaves the UK with fewer, more populous councils than virtually anywhere else in the democratic world. Civic identity has been the loser. France, with the same population as the UK, has 36,000 basic units of local government. Kent, one English county among many, has a larger population than several American states. Vermont has fewer residents than Birmingham or Leeds, yet US states have power over everything from taxation to the death penalty. English councils have their tax powers restricted while their most important remaining power is the delivery of social care.

If the pattern of reform since the 1970s continues, England will end up with region-sized councils that have the powers of rural districts. Epic self-belief within Westminster and Whitehall has convinced all the bigger parties that they cannot entrust councils with very much power. The exception to this was the idea of directly elected mayors, which both David Cameron and Tony Blair favoured. Having established the London mayor and assembly in 2000, Blair originally wanted to create regional government across England, but that idea was scuppered by the devolution referendum in 2004. Councils in Greater Manchester worked together on policy with such success that the then chancellor, George Osborne, became a cheerleader for combined authorities and devolved resources.

The governments of Cameron and Theresa May encouraged the creation of elected city-regional mayors alongside combined authorities in metropolitan areas such as Greater Manchester, Sheffield city region, the West Midlands and the Liverpool city region. Over time, it became clear this model could form the basis of a form of English devolution. The mayoral combined authority model has subsequently spread to more cities and increasingly to counties too.

There is now a remarkable patchwork of areas with different devolution deals. Some have mayors though some do not. In London, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, the mayor is also the police and crime commissioner . The degree to which services are devolved also varies. Transport, housing, business support, adult education and planning are key spheres of devolved power, but the degree of devolution is different from locality to locality. Aside from London, which has a separately elected assembly, mayors in other areas work alongside local councils and their leaders.

Polling suggests that directly elected mayors in Greater Manchester and Greater London have high levels of name recognition. Andy Burnham has been able to deliver a radical reform of bus services in Greater Manchester, while Ben Houchen has concentrated on controversial economic development in Teesside. Andy Street in the West Midlands has forged a managerial and depoliticised administration. Steve Rotheram (Liverpool) and Tracy Brabin (West Yorkshire) have worked alongside Burnham to create a powerful northern voice as a counterbalance to the south. The struggle over HS2 is one example of this joint working.

Sadiq Khan in London, like his Manchester, Liverpool and West Midlands counterparts, is standing for a third term as mayor. The citywide government of the capital is now 24 years old, and is fully embedded. The scale of London, coupled with the Greater London Authority’s control of transport, makes the mayor of London one of the UK’s most visible political roles. Khan exercises greater power than most MPs or even ministers.

The other city-regional mayors are increasingly influential and powerful too. “Trailblazer” deals have been given to Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, providing them with a single funding settlement from the Treasury. Although the powers of even the most developed mayoral combined authorities and London fall a long way short of those of the Scottish parliament or the Welsh Senedd, there has been a distinct shift of power away from Whitehall.

Labour is committed to taking devolution further, yet Keir Starmer would be stuck with the gradually evolving system he is likely to inherit from the Conservatives. Regional government is now effectively impossible, because the evolving mayoral city regional authorities are embedded subsets of, say, the north-west. Labour will inevitably have to build on the slightly ramshackle set of devolution settlements across England, while in opposition, the Conservatives will see big opportunities to pick up high-profile mayoralties in England.

A Labour government would have to decide whether to create a uniform system of combined authorities, possibly with mayors everywhere, across England. This would not be straightforward, given the geography of existing devolution deals. There would be pressure to move to a single tier of unitary councils across England to avoid multiple layers of local government.

There would be pressure to devolve tax-raising powers, which the Treasury would inevitably oppose. There is also the question of whether Labour, having just got its hands on power after years in opposition, would want to hand over some of this power to mayors of different parties. Moreover, there would be no money to pay for the kind of shiny new buses, trams and homes which would be seen as a potential benefit of more devolution.

The degree of centralisation in England is a national embarrassment that undermines trust in democracy. Polling is clear: most people would like more power to be devolved locally. The cautious devolution that has randomly evolved under different governments since the early 2000s should be a key element in any attempts to make the UK a more equal place to live. Radicalism is surely needed. Carrying on as we are should not be an option.
