The 2 types of Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Among cruise lines that focus on high-priced luxury trips, Regent Seven Seas Cruises has one of the easiest-to-understand fleets.

The Miami-based luxury brand has just five (soon to be six) ships, all of which fall into one of just two groups: the Explorer Class ships and the Small Cruise Ship Class ships.

Built over the past decade, the Explorer Class ships are the line's newest, biggest and most elegant vessels. The Small Cruise Ship Class ships are much older vessels and, as the class name suggests, the smallest ships in the Regent fleet.

For now, there are just two ships in the Explorer Class, and both have debuted since 2016. But that number is scheduled to rise to three in December with the arrival of Regent's new Seven Seas Grandeur.

The three ships in the Small Cruise Ship Class are all at least 20 years old.

Each of the vessels in the Explorer Class has been built to the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all. The three ships in the Small Cruise Ship Class have more differences, though they share many of the same venues.

Here, we explain the distinctive features of Regent's two ship classes so you can plan the luxury cruise that's right for you.

An introduction to Regent ships

Regent is one of the oldest of about half a dozen major cruise lines that compete in the market for "ultra-luxury" cruises — voyages that promise a high level of elegance and pampering and have a high price tag to match.

Founded in 1992 as the result of a merger between two one-ship lines (Radisson Cruises and Seven Seas Cruises), Regent has been in the luxury cruise game longer than its biggest rival, Silversea Cruises (which dates to 1994), as well as such newcomers in the space as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Scenic Luxury Cruises . It began operating just a few years after the founding of luxury cruise competitors Crystal Cruises (now reborn as Crystal ) and Seabourn .

Like all such brands, Regent operates ships that are far smaller and more intimate than the giant floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line . Instead of thousands of passengers, each Regent vessel is designed to hold just a few hundred people.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Still, while the ships are smaller than what you'll find at a mass-market line, they're not cramped. Indeed, they're among the most spacious ships at sea when measured by their space-per-passenger ratio, which is about 50% higher than what you'll find on many mass-market ships.

They also operate with roughly 1 crew member for every 1.4 passengers — one of the higher crew-to-passenger ratios in the cruise business (though not as high as on Crystal's recently revamped ships , which now operate at a stunning 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio).

Both space-per-passenger ratios and staff-to-passenger ratios are measurements used as shorthand for the luxury level of a vessel.

Among other luxury touches, every cabin on every Regent ship is a suite, and the number of restaurants, bars and lounges is impressive for vessels of this size.

In addition, Regent ships are known for being particularly opulent when compared to other ultra-luxury vessels. The line's new Explorer Class ships, in particular, are loaded with soaring spaces lined with pricey marble, crystal chandeliers and high-end art.

Explorer Class

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Ships in class: Seven Seas Grandeur (2023); Seven Seas Splendor (2020); Seven Seas Explorer (2016)

Regent's two (soon to be three) Explorer Class ships are the creme-de-la-creme of the Regent fleet — the vessels you'll want to pick if you gravitate to the most new and modern vessels.

All three of the 750-passenger ships are among the most opulent and upscale cruise vessels ever built, famous for their soaring ceilings, inlaid marble floors, crystal chandeliers (each of the vessels has more than 500) and Picassos on the walls, to name just a few high-end touches.

The vessels essentially offer two kinds of accommodations: fancy and really, really fancy.

As is often the case in the luxury cruise market, every cabin on these ships is a suite with a balcony (something that is also true for two of the line's three older ships). Even the smallest of the accommodations measures 307 square feet, which is not too shabby for a cruise ship.

Still, it's in the bigger cabin complexes at the front and back of the Explorer Class ships where things get really impressive.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Each of the vessels is home to a ridiculously large, forward-facing room complex called the Regent Suite that, at 4,443 square feet, is one of the most elaborate and expensive cruise ship suites ever built. (Each also has an equally stunning price tag of $11,000 per night.) Each of the ships also has a dozen more suites that measure in the 1,000-square-foot to 2,000-square-foot range, as well as additional accommodations in the 500-square-foot to 1,000-square-foot range.

Explorer Class vessels also offer a wide array of elegant and high-end restaurants, all included in the fare. They include Compass Rose, the international cuisine staple of all Regent ships; Regent's signature steakhouse Prime 7; casual restaurant La Veranda; Asian eatery Pacific Rim; and French restaurant Chartreuse.

Multiple bars and lounges on these vessels in recent years have embraced the trend of ever-quirkier craft drinks. A new drinks menu has brought designer gin drinks that incorporate new-for-Regent Fever-Tree premium tonics and all sorts of spices, herbs and fruits.

For the most part, the footprints of all three ships in this series are the same, but eagle-eyed cruisers will notice that Regent made a few tweaks to the design as the series developed.

In an effort to improve passenger flow, for instance, Regent turned around the grand staircase in the central atrium on Seven Seas Splendor as compared to how it was laid out on Seven Seas Explorer. A major focal point of the vessel's interior, the staircase now cascades down from the public areas on Deck 5 toward the magnificent, marble-floored promenade on Deck 4. This promenade leads directly into Seven Seas Splendor's main restaurant, Compass Rose.

Among standout features, all Explorer Class vessels have an elaborate cooking classroom, which doesn't exist on older Regent ships. Dubbed the Culinary Arts Kitchen, each of these venues has 18 individual cooking stations tricked out with top-of-the-line induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and all sorts of cool cooking equipment. They're backed by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the ocean.

All three of the ships also have an elaborate Serene Spa & Wellness Center with treatment rooms and a relaxation room. A hydrothermal suite includes a multisensory aromatherapy steam room, chill room, infrared sauna and experiential showers, plus an outdoor lounge area with three whirlpools. The spa areas also offer hair and nail care in a beauty salon.

Small Cruise Ship Class

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Ships in class: Seven Seas Voyager (2003); Seven Seas Mariner (2001); Seven Seas Navigator (1991)

The three ships in the simply named Small Cruise Ship Class are considerably older than the line's Explorer Class ships and aren't quite as big — or opulent — as their sisters.

They also have more variation among them than the Explorer Class ships. The newest of the ships, the 2003-built Seven Seas Voyager, measures 42,363 tons, which is about 12% smaller than the slightly older, 48,075-ton Seven Seas Mariner.

Seven Seas Navigator, which dates to 1991, is an even bigger outlier as it measures just 28,803 tons, which makes it about 40% smaller than Seven Seas Mariner.

Regent lumps all of these ships together in one class, and we do, too, because they share many of the same features despite their size variation.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner, in particular, are very similar. Both are designed for about 700 passengers and have the same basic array of venues, including the same lineup of four restaurants: the international cuisine-serving Compass Rose, steakhouse Prime 7, casual eatery La Veranda and French restaurant Chartreuse.

Unlike on the bigger Explorer Class ships, there is no Asian eatery on either of the vessels.

The smaller Seven Seas Navigator, which holds just 490 passengers, has all of the same eateries above, too, with the exception of Chartreuse. It's the only Regent ship without this popular French restaurant.

As is the case with Regent's Explorer Class ships, all the cabins on the Small Cruise Ship Class vessels are suites. Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner are all-balcony ships, too. One big difference, though, is that these three older ships don't have the truly giant suites found on the Explorer Class ships. The biggest suites on all three of the vessels are in the 1,000-square-foot to 1,200-square-foot range.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Overview

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas is regularly ranked among the top luxury cruise experiences, and was recently voted "World"s Best Small Cruise Line" by Travel + Leisure magazine readers. The line, previously known as Radisson Seven Seas, has built its reputation on a luxurious, all-inclusive cruising experience that is sophisticated without being stuffy - think country club casual, with all the fine amenities you could want. The line travels to hundreds of destinations on six continents, including Antarctica, on beautiful small- to mid-size ships.

Regent Cruises All-Inclusive Value

Regent Seven Seas prides itself on offering an all-inclusive luxury experience; even before you step onboard, all your worries are taken care of, from airfare to dining to on-shore activities. Amenities like unlimited shore excursions, pre-paid gratuities, and free unlimited Wi-Fi are just some of the distinguishing features of a Regent cruise. All meals and beverages are included in your cruise fare, as well as a stocked in-suite bar filled with your favorite liquor, wine, or champagne.

In addition to these all-inclusive features, the ships themselves offer a luxurious environment in which to unwind and enjoy some R&R. Regent's ships have a superb staff-to-guest ratio of nearly 1 to 1.5, and each ship has no more than 375 suites. With guests numbering in the hundreds instead of the thousands, you won't have to wait in any long lines or get lost in the crowd aboard a Regent cruise.

Regent Cruises Ships

Regent's award-winning fleet of ships includes four elegant vessels: the Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Mariner, Seven Seas Voyager, and Seven Seas Navigator. The ships carry between 490 and 750 guests, and you'll be in fine company with like-minded cruise travelers. Regent's highly attentive staff is always on hand should you need something, though they know when to give you peace and quiet, too. The entire Regent fleet boasts all-suite ships, and a large majority have private balconies to enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean. Once onboard, you can enjoy impeccable dining, exciting enrichment opportunities, and plenty of live entertainment as you sail from one destination to the next.

Regent Cruises Destinations

With more than 450 destinations around the world, Regent offers a plethora of different itineraries reaching almost every corner of the globe. Sail to Africa, Asia, Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, or South America - the opportunities are endless, and there's something for everyone, whether you're looking for a tropical getaway, a trek into the great outdoors, or a city-hopping vacation.

Regent Cruises Accommodations

Perhaps the most important part of a luxury cruise is your personal space, and Regent's all-suite accommodations guarantee comfort. Suites range from a modest 300 square feet to an over-the-top 4,400 square feet, with elegant decor, marble-accented bathrooms, spacious closets and a separate sitting area in each suite. You can choose from a European king-sized bed or twin bed accommodations, and in every bathroom you'll find L'Occitane soaps and lotions, plush bathrobes and slippers, and a hair dryer. Every guest can enjoy complimentary 24-hour room service, including dinner served course-by-course if you'd like a romantic night in. Upon embarkation, you'll be greeted by a welcome bottle of champagne, as well as an in-suite mini bar filled with your favorite soft drinks, beer, and bottled water. Other amenities include a private safe, television and video player, and private butler service offered to guests in room categories B and above.

Regent Cruises Dining

Regent takes dining seriously onboard, and knows you want to be flexible with your schedule. As such, you can eat whenever you want, with whomever you want at various open-seating restaurants, including the flagship Compass Rose. This restaurant features European-inspired dishes, as well as vegetarian, kosher, and health-conscious options. La Veranda is a buffet-style open-seating option, serving a mix of regional specialties and classic dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Specialty dining is available by reservation at Prime 7 steakhouse, Pacific Rim (Pan-Asian cuisine), and the chic Parisian restaurant Chartreuse.

For a casual snack or lunch, you can stop by the pool grill or order room service, available 24 hours a day. During dinner hour, you can request to dine course-by-course in suite, where a server will bring your order from Compass Rose.

Regent Cruises Kids & Teens

Kids are warmly welcomed onboard Regent Seven Seas Cruises. During the summer months and holiday seasons, Club Mariner is offered to keep young cruisers engaged and entertained. Children are split into two age groups - 6 to 11 and 12 to 17 - and are supervised by counselors leading age-appropriate activities like board games, arts and crafts projects, movies, pizza parties, and galley tours. Teens get to help counselors choose their preferred activities.

Infants must be one year of age at the time of sailing to cruise with Regent. Guests under age 18 must stay in a suite with an adult age 18 or older.

Regent Cruises Onboard Activities & Entertainment

You'll never be bored on a Regent Seven Seas cruise... if anything, you may have trouble deciding what to do first. Of course, there's always the pool deck, where you can take a dip, soak up the sun on a lounge chair, or jog around the track for a bit of exercise. The deck is also home to a golf driving net, table tennis, and shuffleboard, plus a warm whirlpool to relax in any time of day. Inside, you can play games or pick up a book in the library, check your email in the internet cafe, or learn something new at an enrichment program. Regent brings on experts in a range of fields to educate guests on everything from wine pairings to ancient history to current events, and even offers hands-on cooking classes with Le Cordon Bleu-trained chefs.

The onboard spa is the place to go when you need some pampering; treatments include manicure and pedicures, acupuncture, facials, skin care services, and massages. You can also work out in the gym solo or take a group fitness class like Pilates.

In the evenings, the casino is a popular spot to hang out, as is the show lounge, where you can watch music, dance, and theater performances from Regent's team of professionals. Each ship has several lounges and bars to grab a drink from, as well as the Connoisseur Club for those who enjoy a fine cigar.

As a member of Regent's family of past guests, you can earn exclusive rewards and benefits designed to add to your experience on future Regent sailings. Oceania vs. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Spend any time on Cruise Critic's message boards and you'll see one question raised over and over again: "Which cruise line is better for me -- Regent Seven Seas Cruises or Oceania Cruises?" It's natural for travelers to be curious about the merits of one cruise line over another -- especially when those two lines in question are owned and managed by the same parent company (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.).

It's true that  Regent  and  Oceania  share many of the same values. They both strive to provide excellent service, focus on exceeding your culinary expectations and devise cruise itineraries that explore all corners of the globe. But there are also some key differences. Let's delve into what makes each cruise line special.

On This Page

Itineraries, shore excursions, entertainment, bottom line.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas has four cruise ships: two 700-passenger vessels, Seven Seas Mariner (launched 2001, refurbished in 2018) and Seven Seas Voyager (2003, refurbished in 2016); plus the 490-passenger Seven Seas Navigator (1999, refurbished in 2016); and the 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer , which joined the fleet in 2016. Another 750-passenger ship, Seven Seas Splendor, is scheduled to launch in 2020.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has six ships. Three 684-passenger R-class ships -- Insignia (joined the fleet in 2004), Nautica (2005), Regatta (2003) -- are all former Renaissance Cruises vessels and were refurbished in 2014. A fourth, Sirena , originally launched in 1999 but joined the Oceania fleet in March 2016 after a $40 million dry dock. Two 1,250-passenger O-class ships were built specifically for the cruise line: Marina , launched in 2011 and refurbished in 2016, and Riviera , launched in 2012 and refurbished 2015.

Oceania's R-class vessels are scheduled for updates, with the cruise line's OceaniaNEXT refurbishment program currently underway. With a $100 million budget, Oceania is slated to redesign staterooms and suites, incorporate new decor in shipboard restaurants, and update bars and lounges. Insignia will be refreshed first, in December 2018, followed by Sirena in May 2019, Regatta in September 2019 and Nautica in June 2020.

Regent and Oceania package different amenities into their cruise fares. Read on to learn what those inclusions are so you can make the best price comparison -- understanding you'll be comparing apples to oranges.

Choose Regent if you want more perks packaged in the all-inclusive cruise fare.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Sometimes you just want to splurge and arrange for the most all-inclusive vacation possible. You don't want to think about what's included and what's not. If that describes what you're looking for, Regent Seven Seas is an excellent choice. It is arguably the most "all inclusive" of the luxury cruise lines.

Everyone -- no matter which cabin they're in -- receives included benefits such as round trip airfare, a welcome bottle of Champagne, unlimited shore excursions, specialty restaurant dining, prepaid gratuities and Wi-Fi. Regent also packages unlimited complimentary beverages -- coffee/tea, water, soda, juice, wines, spirits and beer -- in its cruise fare. Bars are open throughout the day, and your suite is also outfitted with a complete liquor bar setup and mini-bar, which are replenished daily. While Regent also sells premium wines, most cruisers say the complimentary pours are good enough.

Suite passengers get even more inclusions and perks , depending on suite category, such as a one-night pre-cruise stay in a luxury hotel, butler service and -- for Regent Suite passengers -- personal car and guide during shore excursions in all ports.

Choose Oceania Cruises if you have a smaller budget.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

When you compare fares to Regent, Oceania is the cheaper option by far -- but, of course, there are fewer inclusions in the fare, and entry-level cabins are much smaller.

A seven-night Alaska voyage aboard Seven Seas Mariner (Anchorage to Vancouver) will run you $6,099 in a Deluxe Veranda Suite while a similar itinerary (Seattle round trip) aboard Oceania Regatta is just $3,399 (OLife fare with additional perks) or $2,849 (regular fare) for a comparable Veranda Stateroom. A 10-night, Caribbean round trip voyage out of Miami aboard Seven Seas Explorer costs $5,699 for a Veranda Suite while a comparable Miami round trip on Oceania Riviera is $4,499 (OLife fare) and $3,799 (regular fare) for a Veranda Stateroom.

Or if you prefer spending your money on what's most important to you in an a la carte setting.

With Regent's all-inclusive fares (see above), you might be paying for things you won't actually use. In this case, Oceania might make more sense for you and give you the best value for your money. Oceania's cruise fare includes quite a lot, like free unlimited internet, 24/7 room service and dining at all restaurants onboard -- even the specialty restaurants. Unlimited soft drinks, bottled water, cappuccino, espresso, teas and juices are also complimentary, as is shuttle service from the ship to the city center in many ports of call.

However, passengers can pick and choose where else they want to spend their money. Wine-pairing dinners at La Reserve, tours, gratuities, alcoholic beverages and spa treatments are not included in the fare.

Passengers can opt for a basic lower cruise fare and pay extra for all of the above, or they can choose the line's OLife Choice promotional fares and pay extra to customize the cruise experience by selecting from a range of additional freebies, such as a choice of complimentary shore excursions, a free House Beverage package or shipboard credit. Round trip airfare from certain gateways comes free with OLife fares -- or you can opt out of the airfare and receive a credit instead.

Both cruise lines offer port-intensive itineraries that allow travelers to immerse themselves in the destination. Regent and Oceania's offerings are both strong in Alaska , the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Both lines offer a mix of shorter one- to two-week voyages -- especially in popular regions like the Caribbean and Mediterranean -- and longer "grand voyages" that can last 30 or more nights. Both lines offer full world cruises.

If you wish to sail to Australia and New Zealand, Oceania is an excellent choice because it's sailing one of its most intimate ships -- Regatta -- in the region. Pick a 14- or 16-night voyage that focuses solely on Australian and New Zealand ports. (Regent's Australian voyages in 2019 are 18- to 52-nights and call on a mix of Australian and Asian ports.)

Oceania also offers more Africa-centric voyages than Regent does at this time. However, if you want to visit Asia, Regent offers more choice with itineraries from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo and Bangkok. Both offer world cruises and ocean crossings.

Choose Regent if you love ocean crossings.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Regent gets rave reviews from travelers who book "grand crossings," otherwise known as transocean voyages . Most cruise lines, including Oceania, offer transocean itineraries, but Regent excels in programming additional onboard lecturers and activities -- like bridge -- to make these cruises special.

These trips occur when the line's ships need to reposition from one part of the world to another. The itineraries are full of back-to-back days at sea -- with a few ports of call for good measure -- and those sea days are absolute gold for anyone who wants to spend his or her time enjoying the ship.

Play some competitive trivia, practice your ballroom dance steps, learn to cook something new, attend a lecture or pamper yourself with a spa treatment or two -- there is always something to keep you busy. Crossings are usually priced well and this may be an opportunity to try Regent's flagship, Seven Seas Explorer, at a lower than normal per diem.

Choose Oceania if you have your heart set on an in-depth world cruise.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

If you want to invest your time and money in a world voyage on a luxury vessel, Oceania's Insignia will be hard to beat. Oceania's world cruise -- at 180 days -- is the longest of any cruise line. In 2020, it departs Miami and returns to San Francisco, but you can tag on 20 more days for a round number of 200 nights at sea if you opt to return to New York City instead.

The route changes each year but is always intriguing -- 2019 features the South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia, the Caribbean, Canada and New England, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East while the 2020 voyage forfeits those destinations in favor of a bit of South America, Asia, Alaska and a focus on the ports of Southern Africa.

The quality of land tours offered by both Regent Seven Seas and Oceania is very high. Each line uses knowledgeable tour guides and transportation providers that maintain luxury coaches, watercraft, vans and cars. Neither line packs its tours, so you won't feel overcrowded on the bus getting to and from each site.

Choose Regent if you know you want to take a ship-sponsored shore excursion in every port of call.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Regent is famous for offering unlimited shore excursions in its cruise fare. In practice, this means that you can be assured of an interesting tour ashore in every port -- all for no additional out-of-pocket expenses (other than a discretionary tip for your local guide).

Free excursions generally include guided walks of the city center or hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus tours; visits to museums, castles, historic sites or vineyards; or the opportunity to meet locals at places like fish markets or farmers markets. In every port, you will find a good number and variety of complimentary tours.

Regent also offers additional paid tours -- upgraded options that are more niche or in-depth, or offer pricier components than the free tours. Some examples of the for-fee excursions include Regent's Gourmet Explorer Tours that combine things like a market visit and lunch out or a hands-on cooking class with a local chef. Or pick from a variety of wellness tours that may offer a day of yoga and wine tasting, for example.

Choose Oceania if you're more the DIY type.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

While Oceania Cruises offers a variety of interesting shore tours, a good number of travelers prefer to do their own thing. That might be because the line tends to draw a slightly younger and more active crowd than Regent, and those passengers are more willing to strike out on their own -- either touring independently or booking a private guide.

But fear not: If you enjoy cruise-sponsored ship tours, Oceania's offerings are solid and they offer a variety of tour packages if you're looking to save a few dollars by booking several excursions through the cruise line.

Some travelers want their cruise ship cabin to be their home away from home, while others look at it as merely a place to sleep at night. Regent -- with its spacious suites , almost all with balconies -- is a better bet if you like to spend time in your room. Oceania, on the other hand, offers a wider range of cabin categories -- including some inside cabins -- so you've got a bit more choice there. Both offer butler service in Penthouse Suites and above.

Choose Regent if you want a spacious suite with a balcony.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Regent's fleet comprises "all suite" ships, and 97 percent of the suites are outfitted with a balcony. (Seven Seas Navigator is the only ship in the fleet that has suites without a balcony.) When it comes to space on all Regent ships, even the entry-level Veranda category spans 307 square feet (including the balcony) on Regent Explorer. Compare that to Oceania's 165-square-foot Ocean View category aboard Regatta, Insignia, Nautica and Sirena.

Choose Oceania if you want real choice when it comes to your cabin category.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Sure, Regent boasts that nearly every cabin in its fleet has a balcony, but what good does that do you if you're never in your stateroom? Oceania Cruises offers a broader range of cabin categories to suit every cruiser's style.

All Oceania ships have inside staterooms, ocean-view cabins, veranda and Concierge-level veranda staterooms, Penthouse Suites, Vista Suites and Owner's Suites. These options afford you the ability to select the ideal cabin.

If you're on a budget, a more inexpensive inside stateroom or ocean-view cabin may suffice. For those looking for some additional services, go for the Concierge-level veranda category that provides priority embarkation and luggage delivery, priority specialty restaurant reservations, unlimited access to Canyon Ranch SpaClub's private Spa Terrace and more.

If you've got cash to spend, Penthouse Suite and higher passengers can board the ship even earlier than Concierge-level guests, and a butler -- on call 24 hours a day -- caters to their needs. Vista and Owner's Suite passengers also receive a complimentary in-suite bar setup with six full-size bottles of premium spirits and wines.

Both cruise lines offer some compelling dining options. Both have gorgeous main dining rooms and each has a steakhouse, French restaurant and Asian specialty restaurant on ships throughout its fleet. Neither line charges extra fees for its specialty dining rooms (with the exception of Oceania's for-fee La Reserve wine dinner), so you can expand your palate and try everything without shelling out extra cash.

Choose Regent if you're a red meat kind of guy or gal.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

If you love a good steak on a cruise , you have to try Regent's Prime 7. It serves USDA prime-grade beef, as well as cuts that have been dry aged for 28 days, and you'll be hard-pressed to find cuts as delicious as these at a land-based restaurant. The most popular entree is the porterhouse for two with all the fixings (potato, choice of vegetable and salad). If you're in the mood, turn your meal into surf and turf with an order of Alaskan king crab legs or a whole Maine lobster. Desserts here are quite good and include homey standbys like Chicago-style cheesecake, banana cream pie and Key lime pie.

Or if you'd like to make a special request.

Regent's culinary department excels when you make a special request -- just be sure to do it in advance. For example, do you want an Alaskan king crab leg feast for dinner one night? Just ask the maitre d' at the beginning of your cruise and it will be arranged. Do you prefer Indian food? A special meal can be crafted just for you and your dinner guests. Be sure to make your preferences known at the beginning of the voyage and just about any request can be accommodated.

Choose Oceania Cruises if you love varied dining options.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Oceania Cruises offers plenty of choices when it comes to mealtime. All ships across the fleet offer the Grand Dining Room and Polo Grill steakhouse, which like Regent's Prime 7 also serves prime and dry-aged beef. In the afternoon, you’ll find The Bistro in the MDR. With lunch menus designed by French chef Jacques Pepin, you'll enjoy bistro-style dishes like croque-monsieur sandwiches, salad Nicoise and veal scallopini piccata.

All ships also have two outdoor dining options, Terrace Cafe and Waves Grill. The Italian restaurant Toscana makes an appearance on all ships except for Sirena, which offers Tuscan Steak in its place. Oceania's newer ships, Marina and Riviera, offer Jacques (with menus by Pepin), La Reserve for wine dinners and Red Ginger Asian restaurant (also available onboard Sirena). Privee is available for private dinners for Marina and Riviera passengers.

Or if you'd like to throw a private dinner party.

One standout dining venue aboard Marina and Riviera is Privee, where you can host an intimate dinner party for 10. The setting is magical with a custom-built table designed by Dakota Jackson, a Venini chandelier, Ferrari-red carpeting and Baroque millwork. If you're celebrating a special occasion, this is the place to do it. You may order from either Polo Grill or Toscana, or both -- the choice is yours.

The fact that they are sister lines (both are operated by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.) might explain why Oceania and Regent have similar entertainment and enrichment programing. For instance, both offer hands-on cooking lessons (Oceania’s Culinary Center onboard Marina and Riviera, and Regent's Culinary Arts Kitchen aboard Explorer), spa and wellness programs run by Canyon Ranch, bridge programs on certain itineraries, and lectures by esteemed personalities onboard. Despite their similarities, however, Oceania and Regent still provide some distinct entertainment options in different areas for their passengers.

Choose Oceania if you're into more creative pursuits.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

Oceania's larger O-class ships, Marina and Riviera, provide passengers an opportunity to get creative through the Artist Loft. Beginners can learn to paint, sketch or create collages with step-by-step instructions from a resident artist, while seasoned pros can improve their skills. The Artist Loft is also available onboard Insignia's world cruises.

Choose Regent for Broadway-style shows.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

While Oceania attempts to cater to everyone with entertainment options that range from karaoke, dance, live music and production shows, Regent gets higher marks when it comes to its stage shows. A team of musicians and actors perform lavish musical and theatrical productions at the theater. Recent top-notch performances include the cabaret-style "Paradis" and Beatlemania-infused "My Revolution."

You'll almost never be inundated with families on either line, but both do offer some select services during certain times of year.

Choose Regent if you want both a kids club program and a luxurious cruise experience.

regent seven seas cruises fleet

During June, July and August and on certain holiday sailings, Regent offers its Club Mariner Youth Program in Alaska, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Baltics. There is no permanent kids club so most activities take place in the Stars lounge or on deck.

Programming throughout the day focuses on age-appropriate activities for kids ages 5 to 8, 9 to 12, and 13 to 17, with options such as storytelling, board games, arts and craft projects or interactive pursuits such as baking cookies with the chef. Tweens and teens generally spend more time competing in video game tournaments or watching movies.

Choose Oceania Cruises if you're traveling with a multigenerational group (with older teens).

regent seven seas cruises fleet

There is a lot to do on Oceania ships, especially the fleet's newcomers Marina and Riviera. No matter the ages of your family members, each will find a pastime that suits; however, there are no dedicated kids' areas or activities. The line is best suited for older teens or young adults who can entertain themselves.

The Pool Desk is home to a spacious heated pool and three whirlpool spas as well as the ubiquitous pool bar. The Artist Loft is an enrichment center of sorts where you can find artists-in-residence offering step-by-step instructions in a variety of arts such as painting with watercolors or digital photography. The Culinary Center astounds amateur cooks with fully equipped workstations; you can learn techniques and recipes from a master chef. If your family has gone their separate ways during the day, we recommend you meet up at 4 p.m. daily for a spot of traditional English tea and all-you-can-eat pastries.

Choose Oceania if your budget is an issue; even buying a drinks package and shore excursions a la carte could net out to a cheaper bill than a Regent cruise, especially on its flagship Seven Seas Explorer.

Choose Regent Seven Seas Cruises if you want a pull-out-the-stops, all-inclusive cruise with gratuities, alcoholic beverages and shore excursions covered in the fare.

A TASTE OF TRAVEL EXQUISITE CUISINE

Few things connect us to a particular time and place like cuisine. New flavors and intoxicating aromas from far off lands can instantly transport us to a wonderful memory. They can enliven our spirits with passion as we experience new things and expand our palates. It’s why we take pride in creating dining experiences that are so exquisite: nothing can elevate travel like cuisine. Take in the bouquet and savor the notes of an expertly paired glass of wine provided by the head sommelier and bite into a perfectly aged and prepared filet mignon at Prime 7. Every appetizer at Compass Rose — like the delicate and rich lobster bisque — offers a delightful array of tastes and textures, while the scent of freshly baked bread and pastries makes for a refreshing greeting at breakfast each morning. Allow the sublime and traditional flavorings of the Sole Grenobloise to transport you to France from Chartreuse. Italy is always at hand via the authentic dishes of Sette Mari at La Veranda, like the subtly enhanced flavors of the Pollo alla Cacciatora . Deliver an exotic touch to your evening with an array of dim sum at Pacific Rim on Seven Seas Grandeur™ , Seven Seas Splendor® and Seven Seas Explorer® . The Pool Grill is the perfect spot to relax with friends after a full day of onshore adventures. Or, for a more private evening, enjoy the quiet and comfort of your own suite with a meal prepared to your liking through our 24-hour, in-suite dining service. Whatever your diet and whatever your mood, our masterful culinary teams deliver unforgettable dining experiences with a wide array of delicious choices, including plant-based and gluten-free offerings. Dining is always whenever, wherever and with whomever you choose. And there is never a charge for the exceptional wines, impeccable service and Unrivaled Cuisine™.

ALASKA EXPECT THE MAJESTIC IN THE WILDLANDS

A handful of words leap out when we describe Alaska — a state that covers more territory than Texas, California and Montana combined — to those who haven’t been: Immense. Untamed. Majestic. Epic. All describe Alaska the place perfectly. When its legendary coastline appears on the horizon, however, and we’re standing with others to take in the spectacle, a single word captures what we collectively feel: Humbled. Here at the “Last Frontier,” wilderness knows no bounds and your sense of adventure runs free. From mid-May through mid-September 2024, sail aboard Seven Seas Explorer ® to experience Alaska’s green season, when temperatures turn mild, rivers fill with spawning salmon and wildlife are on the move. Take in the splendor of Seward’s Resurrection Bay fjord, your eyes on the water for sea otters, orcas and whales and in the air for puffins, loons and eagles. Cruising peaceful Disenchantment Bay, prepare for the thrilling crack of Hubbard Glacier calving into a suddenly roiled sea. Discover why Sitka was known as the “Paris of the Pacific” while a guide helps you scan the forest’s edge for brown bears and black-tailed deer. After watching for humpback whales aboard a jet-powered catamaran in Juneau’s Auke Bay, discuss the day’s breathtaking sights over local craft brews and a classic Alaskan meal of salmon grilled over a fragrant fire. Breathe in the air of pure wilderness from your private balcony aboard the most luxurious ship in Alaskan waters and know you’re indelibly connected to this humbling corner of the world. And perhaps dream of your return.

ST. MICHAEL’S CATHEDRAL

SITKA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

SITKA, ALASKA Snuggled between a mountain range known as the Three Sisters and Sitka Sound, this small town’s natural beauty is nothing short of epic. In the shadow of snowcapped Mount Edgecumbe, Sitka also boasts wonderfully preserved history and a thriving arts community. Founded by fur traders as New Archangel in 1799, Sitka was acquired by the United States of America as the Alaska territory in 1867. Explore the onion-shaped domes and gold-colored crosses of St. Michael’s Cathedral, a picturesque remnant of Sitka’s heritage. After absorbing centuries of history at the Sitka History Museum, stroll the downtown’s numerous art galleries, shops and restaurants, perhaps stopping for a locally made craft beer. Beneath a canopy of towering hemlock, spruce and cedar trees, behold the 18 totems carved by Tlingit and Haida artists along the remarkable Totem Trail in Sitka National Historical Park.

Regent’s Seven Seas Society cruise loyalty program: The ultimate guide

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Among luxury cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises has one of the most robust loyalty programs.

Despite being a relatively small brand with just five ships, it offers an impressive seven tiers of loyalty status as part of what it calls the Seven Seas Society. Each of the tiers brings a number of perks, some quite valuable.

As you start to rise through the Seven Seas Society tiers, you’ll find yourself rewarded with everything from onboard spending credits and free onboard Wi-Fi service to — at the highest levels — discounts of 5% to 10% on every cruise you book.

Those benefits work out to be real money in your pocket, as they will lower the cost of your cruise vacation.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

The robustness of Regent’s program is all the more impressive, given that the line is one of the most all-inclusive in the world. Regent includes a lot of benefits in its fares — such as drinks and shore excursions — that other lines give away only as loyalty perks to their best customers.

That leaves Regent with fewer perks to offer in its loyalty program. Still, it has come up with some creative ways to reward its most loyal fans, including several that will make a big impact on their wallets.

Ways to earn points

The points-earning system for the Seven Seas Society program is about as simple as can be: You will earn 1 point for every night you stay on a Regent ship.

That’s it. There are no bonus points for staying in a top suite, as there are at some lines. Nor will you get extra points for spending certain amounts of money with the line, as is sometimes the case.

The only exception to the above is for solo cruisers who pay a “single supplement” of 75% or more to stay in a cabin designed for two. They get 2 points for every night they stay on a ship.

For the most part, though, if you take a 10-night cruise with Regent, you will get 10 points (which the line calls “nights”). Take a 20-night cruise, and you will get 20 points.

Related: 5 secrets to getting a luxury cruise for less

Note that in most cases, your points will accrue upon completion of the cruise on which they are earned. In the case of Regent’s longer Grand Voyages and World Cruises, you’ll see your points pop into your account at the end of each official segment of the trip. (You can access your account and more information about Regent’s loyalty program at the Regent website ).

Either way, though, if the number of nights you are sailing during a cruise will elevate you to the next tier of rewards, you will enjoy instant recognition at the higher tier from the moment you board — a great feature of the program in our eyes.

One notable caveat to points earning in the program: You only will get credit for nights where you actually are present on a Regent ship. If you have to leave a cruise early, you won’t earn points for the nights you are not on board. You also won’t earn points for any nights spent in hotels as part of Regent’s pre- and post-cruise hotel and land programs.

Seven Seas Society tiers and benefits

There are seven tiers in the Seven Seas Society program:

  • Bronze (7-20 nights)
  • Silver (21-74 nights)
  • Gold (75-199 nights)
  • Platinum (200-399 nights)
  • Titanium (400-999 nights)
  • Diamond (1,000-1,999 nights)
  • Commodore (2,000-plus nights)

Regent only offers cruises of seven nights or longer, so you’ll be at the first tier of the program, Bronze, after a single sailing. If you book one of Regent’s longer sailings as your first cruise with the line, you might even catapult into the second or third tier of the program after just one sailing.

Related: A beginners guide to cruise line loyalty programs

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Bronze) doesn’t bring all that much in terms of truly valuable rewards. The most alluring benefit at this level is the exclusive Seven Seas Society savings that are available on some departures.

In addition, Bronze members get:

  • Access to an online personal profile
  • An invitation to an onboard Seven Seas Society cocktail reception
  • Double loyalty points when paying extra to sail solo

The double loyalty points for sailing solo only apply when paying a “single supplement” of at least 75% of the regular cruise fare for a cabin designed for two people.

Upon reaching the second tier of the program, Silver, things start getting more interesting. In addition to the Bronze-level rewards, you’ll get priority access when making dinner reservations for the three main specialty restaurants on Regent ships: Prime 7, Chartreuse and Pacific Rim. This is a great perk as it’ll give you a better shot at getting the dinner times you want at these eateries.

The Silver level also will get you the following:

  • Priority online shore excursion reservations
  • One hour of complimentary phone time every time you sail
  • A commemorative pin
  • A newsletter

At the next level up (Gold), the perks include all of the above plus a $100 shipboard credit per suite every time you sail. We love that perk, as it amounts to real money in your pocket. Plus, you’ll get:

  • Unlimited Wi-Fi for free with four logins for up to four devices
  • Two more hours of free phone time (for three hours in total)
  • Priority disembarkation at voyage completion in select ports
  • Choice of newspaper service from papers around the world
  • Exclusive activities on board or ashore on every voyage

The Platinum level brings six more hours of phone time and complimentary luggage tags, two perks that don’t get us all that excited. The latter perk, in particular, is something that seems better in an entry-level tier (though to be fair, these luggage tags are made from quality leather).

But the Platinum level also adds the use of free custom air service once per sailing, which can come in handy. It lets you call a Regent concierge who will help customize your included-in-the-fare flights, so they work best for your schedule. Otherwise, you’re stuck with the flights that Regent picks for you or have to pay an extra charge to change them.

Related: Look inside Regent’s swankiest ship ever

The Platinum level also brings a 10% discount on Regent Choice shore excursions (the line’s collection of niche or intimate extra-fee tours), hotel and land programs. This one perk alone could end up saving you hundreds of dollars.

As noted above, you’ll be at the Bronze tier after just one sailing with Regent. Reaching the Silver tier could take as many as three cruises if you stick to seven-night sailings. But you also could reach it in just one longer cruise.

The number of cruises it’ll take you to reach the Gold and Platinum tiers will depend on whether you do short or long sailings. If you stick to seven-night sailings, you’d have to take a whopping 29 cruises to reach the Platinum tier. But there are super long Regent cruises, such as a 168-night world cruise planned for 2025, that will get you almost all the way to Platinum level with a single voyage.

The elite level that makes a difference

We like quite a few of the perks available at the Bronze through Platinum levels of the Seven Seas Society program. But it is at the Titanium level that things really start to impress us.

Specifically, the Titanium level comes with four really nice perks:

  • Free private transfers between your home or the airport and the ship, within a 100-mile radius, on embarkation and disembarkation day
  • Free unlimited dry cleaning
  • An additional 15% discount on Regent Choice shore excursions, hotels and land programs (for 25% total savings)
  • Access to your suite at 1 p.m. on embarkation day

We absolutely love the private-transfer perk, which lets you start and end your trips in style. There’s nothing like having a private car pick you up at home at the start of the trip or a chauffeur waiting for you upon arrival at the airport. We also love the free unlimited dry cleaning perk. The discounts on shore excursions, hotels and land programs at this level can save you big money — more than $1,000 when booking some add-on land programs.

Related: The best credit cards for booking cruises

Getting to the Titanium level in the Seven Seas Society takes a whole lot of cruising. At a minimum, you’d need to spend the equivalent of more than a year at sea to hit the 400-night threshold for the tier. You could do that by sailing 58 seven-night cruises, 29 two-week cruises or three world cruises (the latter typically lasting around 150 to 170 days).

Best Seven Seas Society elite perk

Regent’s Seven Seas Society program doesn’t include a truly over-the-top perk, like the free cruises that rival Silversea Cruises gives out to members who hit certain milestones. But we do appreciate the 5% and 10% discounts on cruise fares that the line offers to members who reach the Diamond and Commodore tiers, respectively. That can be worth thousands of dollars when booking some sailings. Note that these discounts are available on any sailing you book, not just select Seven Seas Society sailings (for which, as mentioned above, you can get discounts upon reaching the Bronze tier of the program).

Diamond-level members also get one free Regent Choice shore excursion per voyage segment, up to $250 in value, as well as an invitation to new ship christenings (something that doesn’t happen all that often, alas).

The Commodore level adds two more perks that, while not worth a huge amount monetarily, are about as cool as it gets in the world of loyalty programs:

  • A commemorative Commodore officers jacket
  • A commemorative plaque in your name placed on all ships in the Regent fleet

The cutoffs for the Diamond and Commodore tiers are 1,000 nights and 2,000 nights at sea, respectively — levels that only the most dedicated cruisers can reach. But with years of heavy sailings, the feat is doable.

Related: Regent unveils epic, monthslong world cruise

Note that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Regent customers do not have to requalify for status each year. Seven Seas Society members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means that someone who hits Commodore status (and gets that cool jacket) will remain at that top-tier level forever (or until Regent makes a change to the program).

Such “forever status” is one of the great allures of cruise line loyalty programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require members to requalify for status each year.

Bottom line

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has a robust frequent cruiser program with some great perks at its higher tiers. While it doesn’t offer a single perk that is truly knock-your-socks-off, such as the free cruises that a few lines give to customers who reach high levels of status, it brings significant discounts and value-added perks that begin at mid-tier levels.

This is all the more impressive given that Regent is one of the most all-inclusive lines in cruising. Regent includes so many things in its fares — such as drinks, unlimited Wi-Fi and shore excursions — that it leaves very little available to offer to loyal customers as an upgrade other than straight-out discounts on trips. But the line has found other ways to add value  — from free concierge service when arranging flights to a commemorative Commodore jacket.
