Go on a private safari in Kruger National Park

Experience the wonders of Kruger on a private safari with Trafalgar. We’ll take you through one of the largest national parks in Africa, home to 135 mammal species including the iconic Big Five. See elephants chewing on mopane trees, wildebeest running through open savanna, and big cats lurking in the grass.

Take in the cosmopolitan spirit of Cape Town

From the slopes of Table Mountain to the rocky Atlantic shoreline, a tour of Cape Town is one of the best things to do in South Africa. Our Local Specialists will show you the sprawling City Bowl, the golden vineyards of the Cape Winelands, and the spectacular Cape Peninsula.

Enjoy the views of the Drakensberg Mountains

The Drakensberg Mountains are the highest peaks in South Africa, towering up to 1,422 feet. We’ll explore this UNESCO-listed Site, with magnificent views and rock art dating back several thousand years. You’ll also have the chance to join a 4x4 Sani Pass drive, for lunch at Africa's highest pub in Lesotho.

Connect with Swazi culture in a local Chief's village

We’ll travel to beautiful eSwatini, where your South Africa guide will show you around a Swazi Chief's village. You’ll see their traditional crimson dress, sample some local cuisine such as pap (cornmeal porridge) and meat and vegetable stew, and gain a deeper understanding of the community's way of life.

Go up the Table Mountain by Cable Car

Soaring 3,558 feet to form a flat-topped peak, Table Mountain is one of the most iconic South Africa attractions. We’ll take you to the top in a cableway, where you’ll discover bright Cape fynbos, the curious rock hyrax, and panoramic views of the City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard.

Our top 5 things to do in South Africa

We’ll show you what to do in South Africa, from searching for the Big Five in Kruger National Park, to ascending Table Mountain for breathtaking views over Cape Town.

Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town

Founded in 1825 in the historic Company’s Gardens, the South African Museum houses extensive collections of natural history, zoology and archaeology. There are more than 1.5 million specimens in the museum, ranging from 700-million year old fossils, to stone tools made 120,000 years ago.

Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg

The Apartheid Museum commemorates the era of racial segregation in South America, providing a chilling insight into the apartheid system and sharing moving stories of the fight for democracy. You can easily spend a few hours here, taking in the wealth of information on this dark period.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Port Elizabeth

Originally opened in 1956, this museum was renamed in 2002 in honor of Nelson Mandela. It houses a fantastic collection of South African art, along with international pieces. You can see artworks from the Eastern Cape, British art, Chinese textiles, Indian miniatures and international printmaking.

Best museums in South Africa

Our South Africa travel experiences take you to the country’s superb museums, from the moving Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, to the vast historic collections of the Iziko South African Museum.

As South Africa’s favorite snack, you’ll find biltong throughout the country, from markets to restaurants. Biltong is made from cured meat, usually beef and game, and is served in dried slices, spiced with herbs. In South Africa, game refers to the animals of the bush like ostrich, kudu, impala and wildebeest.

South African biryani is a traditional dish originating from the Cape Malay culture. It’s made with lentils, meat like goat or chicken, vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, and seasonings like garam masala, turmeric and chilli powder. It’s served with parboiled rice for a hearty meal.

Amasi is a popular dairy snack in South Africa, made from unpasteurised cow's milk stored in a calabash container to allow it to ferment. The thick liquid that remains tastes like plain yoghurt and is traditionally served in a clay pot, or poured over pap porridge.

Best Food in South Africa

South Africa food is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you all the best places to taste the classics, from dried biltong to warm biryani.

What to pack for South Africa

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In South Africa, the standard voltage is 230 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type D, M and N. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Bring your binoculars for wildlife spotting when we take you on a private safari through Kruger National Park, one of the best destinations for wildlife viewing in all of Africa.

Sunscreen & sunglasses

You’ll be much closer to the equator when you travel to South Africa, so you’ll need to protect your skin and eyes with strong sunscreen and UV protected sunglasses.

South Africa is known for its spectacular beaches, so pack a swimsuit if you’d like to take a dip in the Indian or Atlantic Oceans that border the country.

Versatile clothing

From the dusty savannah and sunny vineyards, to the chilly mountains and windy coastline, you’ll need a range of versatile clothing when you visit South Africa.

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town

s africa tours

Welcome to Cape Town, a vibrant city nestled between Table Mountain and the beautiful coastline. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive package will be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel.

Day 2: Cape Town

s africa tours

Today is all about exploring (and savoring!) this unique city. Join a local expert to see the highlights and charms of Cape Town. We’ll ascend via cable car to the top of Cape Town’s iconic landmark, Table Mountain, for incredible city and bay views. Then we'll have a chance to view and photograph Table Mountain from a distance from the historic, colorful neighborhood known as Bo-Kaap (the Malay Quarter). The final stop is a guided Diamond Experience where you learn about the journey of a diamond direct from South African mines to a finger. Our tour ends at the vibrant V&A Waterfront, where you can enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Relax at a café, sip a glass of South Africa’s renowned wine or browse local art and craft shops.

Note: Table Mountain Cable Car will be completing annual maintenance from July 15th–September 1st, 2024. During this period, we have replaced this experience with a visit to Signal Hill for views of the city and the Atlantic coast line as well as provided a voucher to the V&A Waterfront.

Day 3: Cape Town

s africa tours

This morning, we'll drive past sweeping landscapes to stop at Hout Bay fishing village before we continue on to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, home to baboons, rheboks, and more. At Cape Point, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, we'll soak up majestic views. After lunch, we'll visit Boulders Beach, home to one of the most remarkable mainland African Penguin colonies. Next, we'll visit UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, one of the world's great botanic gardens with 7,000+ indigenous plants.

Day 4: Cape Town

s africa tours

So many options! Today is at leisure for independent exploration, shopping, or relaxing. Go to the beach, take an optional excursion to the scenic Winelands or take the plunge with a thrilling great white shark cage diving excursion. You may also use your free time to visit Robben Island and see where Nelson Mandela spent nearly two decades in captivity. Tonight, we'll enjoy a home-cooked meal with a local family in their home. We'll have the opportunity to talk about the way of life in South Africa, and exchange views and experiences with our host family.

Day 5: Cape Town – Durban – Zululand – Hluhluwe

s africa tours

We'll say farewell to Cape Town and board a morning flight to King Shaka International Airport on the Kwazulu-Natal North Coast, just outside the bustling port city of Durban. Our first stop is Westbrooke, a pretty beachside village where you can stroll golden sands along the Indian Ocean. We’ll continue north through cane fields and timber plantations to Zululand, home to one of the most famous of African tribal peoples. Our hotel tonight is set near the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa and best known for saving the white rhinoceros from extinction.

Day 6: Zululand & Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park Excursion

s africa tours

We’ll fall under the spell of the Zulu people as we visit the Dumazulu Cultural Village. Here, the ancient arts are kept alive, and we’ll learn about traditional dress and the construction of “beehive” huts, as well as meet a Zulu healer and watch tribal dancing. Our visit includes a special lunch with both Zulu and Western dishes. The enchantment continues as we climb aboard open safari vehicles to explore Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, a haven for the second largest land mammal—the white rhino.

Day 7: Hluhluwe – Eswatini

s africa tours

This morning, we cross the border into the independent Kingdom of Eswatini. Here, we'll have the chance to shop for unique African souvenirs. Today we'll also see glass blowing and have the chance to see basket weavers in action at the colorful local markets.

Day 8: Eswatini – Kruger National Park

s africa tours

Our journey takes us through Eswatini’s beautiful countryside to the world-famous Kruger National Park, South Africa’s premier wildlife sanctuary. Enjoy views of the wild from the comfort of our own motor coach as we wind our way to our safari home base, an upscale lodge located near the park.

Day 9: Kruger National Park

s africa tours

Our chances of seeing lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo (the “Big 5”) are very good on today’s safari, as Kruger National Park boasts an estimated 1,500 lions, 17,000 elephants, 48,000 buffalo and even 1,000 of the elusive leopard. We may also spot hippos, crocodiles, zebras and giraffes as we navigate the park in open vehicles. Time to have our cameras ready!

Day 10: Kruger Park – Mpumalanga – Sandton

s africa tours

Scenic vistas abound as we traverse the wild countryside of Mpumalanga along parts of the Panorama Route. We’ll be wowed by mountains, rivers, waterfalls and more in what is called “Paradise Country.” Highlights include the magnificent Blyde River Canyon, divine views from God’s Window and the bizarre and legend-inspiring Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Our final destination is Sandton, a flourishing suburb of Johannesburg, the commerce and diamond mining center.

Day 11: Johannesburg

s africa tours

Today, we’ll delve into South Africa’s turbulent past on a fascinating tour of Soweto, an urban settlement or “township” outside Johannesburg. Our tour takes us to Freedom Square, the home of Nelson Mandela, and the Apartheid Museum, which documents the rise and fall of apartheid and offers a beacon of hope for a future all South Africans can call their own. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 12: Depart Johannesburg

s africa tours

Our tour comes to an end after breakfast today. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive package can take care of last-minute shopping or explore independently before transferring to the airport for our return flight.

Expect most included touring to require walking and standing periods up to 3 hours at a time (up to 2 times per day) on easy terrain with some light stairs. Learn More

Pacing Level: Balanced

Expect either half-day or full-day tours most days with a free day or free half-day to explore independently in most cities. There may be a few early mornings or long travel days by bus (don’t worry—there are always comfort stops!), and you may expect to stay in most accommodations for 3+ nights. Learn More

No Additional Entry Requirements for U.S. Passport Holders

A valid passport is required for international tours. Currently, there are no additional entry requirements for U.S. passport holders, but this can change at any time. Before travel, both U.S. and non-U.S. passport holders should visit our Passports & Visas page to reconfirm entry requirements.

Safari vehicles have high ground clearance and require agility to embark and disembark. There are two days with scenic, but long drives. A few early wake-ups are required for travel days and game drives. South Africa has a system of "loadshedding" which means power turns off to particular areas on a rotation due to the shortage in electricity supply. Most hotels, restaurants, shops and safari lodges have sufficient backup power in place to avoid major disruptions during loadshedding. The impact on tourists is minimal.

The guide "Hardy", and driver "Bennet" deserve special acknowledgement for an outstanding job with timely information, excellent communication skills, and knowledge that well exceeded any reasonable expectations. The tour involves a lot of travel due to the sheer size of the area being covered and is probably noy the best choice for a "downtime" or just relaxing trip. The ages in our party were 26, 58, and 63 and the tour was an excellent choice for us. Plan on meeting for breakfast around 5:30 am and dinner around 6:30 pm we a whole lot of experiences between the two. We combined this tour on our first week in South Africa with two down days in Jo-burg, and then a week of plains game hunting the following week. We are all a bit worn down but with memories, photos, and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Kruger Lodge Experience (3 days) Tour

Kruger Lodge Experience (3 days)

The tour guides and the tour itself were spectacular. The guides did their best to keep us entertained and knew exactly what they were doing. They went the extra mile to show us the big 5 which we really appreciated. The organization of intrepid and their customer service, on the other hand, was very poor. They were not responsive in a timely manner. They weren't willing to accommodate for minor inconveniences from the customer. For example, my crew asked to be picked up from a destination that was 5 min away from the original pick up location. Keeping in mind that we were supposed to be at that location at 5:30am, intrepid should have accommodated for us but it took 5 different people contacting them separately and several back and forth to come pick us up. Tourradar was also responsible for this mess because they acted as a middle man instead of directly allowing us to deal with the issue. These and other types of details that seem simple caused a lot of negative experiences in the tour. Aside from that, seeing the animals and the actual tour were priceless.

9 Day Incredible South African Safari and Drakensberg Adventure Tour

9 Day Incredible South African Safari and Drakensberg Adventure

We had a wonderful tour, made possible by a great guide. We wanted to get a taste of a variety of parks and found the destinations very thoughtfully put together. It is a lot of driving to see the various areas but there were strategic breaks. Loved staying inside the parks and having critters outside the veranda . We saw 13 rhinos in one day! Wade was great at seeing things we would have missed and always able to manoeuvre the car for best views and photos. They are quite happy to tailor your experience so don’t be afraid to ask.

Kruger Lodge Experience Tour

Kruger Lodge Experience

The trip was very good, and an experience to remember! If anything, it has only made us want to visit Kruger once again :) The lodging was very comfortable, and the staff were extremely polite, kind and engaging. The guides who accompanied us on our safaris were also very friendly and knowledgeable while indulging us in our innumerable 'golden' photo opportunities :D All in all, it was a wonderful experience. P.S.: One incident that didn't sit well with us was how one of the lodge owners spoke to a staff member. It was uncomfortably reminiscent of South Africa's recent racial past.

Luxury Garden Route Journey from Cape Town Tour

Luxury Garden Route Journey from Cape Town

Following a 5 day stay in Cape Town, my wife and I were (by pure fluke) lucky enough to be the only people on this particular tour; we therefore had our own private tour at our disposal. Jakes - our tour guide and the owner/operator of Amatungulu Tours - was absolutely first class. He was punctual, very polite & attentive and knowledgeable regarding all things relating to South African culture, history and wildlife. Jakes provided a real personal touch that we felt was second to none and was happy to accommodate any requests regarding the tour itinerary. All of the accommodation and experiences that he booked were excellent & thoroughly enjoyable - all of which made for a wonderful holiday, that we will never forget. Thank you Jakes. My wife and I cannot recommend this tour highly enough.

Best of Kruger National Park Tour

Best of Kruger National Park

PRO: 1. "All included" tour - professional guide, comfortable transportation, very good hotels, all meals and taste of great South Africa's wines. 2. Diversified itinerary - South African nature, culture, history - well presented by knowledgeable guides and thoughtfully designed by tour operator. 3. Hotels, B&B, Lodges, restaurants - exceptional. CON: None. My husband and I would like to thank Jakes for the great organization of this tour. Our guide was very professional, attentive, patient and of great personality. We recommend THIS TOUR to all who really wish get to know this beautiful country, travel in comfort and have a relaxed conference safari.

South Africa Safari Reviews

Our guide was superlative. Our itinerary was superb. Our accommodation and food really satisfying and well beyond expectations. It was a great trip and I'd do it again at my first opportunity. And I'll recommend to far and wide!
The tour was really awesome. Each day we got to see so much and we were so lucky to get to see the Big 5! The only thing that let the experience down was the accommodation which was pretty dated and felt damp. But it had been wet and we were reluctant to overuse the aircon. The food was generous and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. Next time we go safari, we will spend a little more now that we know what to experimenter. Thank you for a great tour.
Amazing trip! We saw a lot of animals despite bad weather. The food was nice and the lodge was cosy. I would recommend staying longer than we did (we only had three days).

SOUTH AFRICA FAQS

When is the best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is a year-round destination, with each season offering something unique to the curious traveller. High season falls between October and March, bringing warm temperatures and summer rains to most parts of South Africa, while the low season is from April to September and is considered the dry period (and one of the best times to go on safari!)

Which Airport do I fly to when visiting South Africa?

Both Cape Town and Johannesburg International Airport offer direct flights from numerous places around the globe. Choosing which airport to land in will depend largely on where you are going within South Africa. Many travellers will choose to fly into Johannesburg and catch connecting flights to other cities and places from there.

What are the top attractions in South Africa?

The Kruger National Park

The Garden Route

Whale Watching in Hermanus

Table Mountain

Robben Island

The Blyde River Canyon

The Cape Winelands

Soweto Township

The Cradle of Mankind

What are the top safaris in South Africa?

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Phinda Private Game Reserve

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

What is the best way to handle finances in South Africa?

We recommend traveling with credit cards/ debit cards that can be used at ATMS. This is a much better option than traveler’s cheques. Not all banks charge foreign transaction fees but please check with your credit card issuer. Please also advise your bank prior to departure that you will be using your credit cards in South Africa. There will be many opportunities to withdraw cash and this is a better way to manage your money safely rather than travelling with large amounts of cash on hand.

Is South Africa Safe?

As with most places around the world there are always going to be areas that should be avoided. Knowing these hotspots is vital for any travel destination and this is usually avoided by booking your holiday through a trusted tour operator or agent.

10-Day South Africa Safari Tours

South Africa is an ideal place for a 10-day safari. With its ever-changing landscapes, it’s an incredibly varied country. It features dramatic mountains, stark deserts, lush forests, endemic fynbos, savannah woodland, a ruggedly wild coastline on the west and idyllic tropical beaches on the east. The country is dotted with 19 national parks and hundreds of other provincial and private reserves. No wonder it is one of the most popular destinations in Africa. Although the wildlife viewing here is as good as anywhere, most visitors want to enjoy some of the other attractions the country has to offer too. Tours to South Africa are therefore usually a mix of wildlife locations and other highlights.

6 Questions About 10-Day South Africa Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

s africa tours

Is 10 days a good amount of time for a trip in South Africa?

“Ten days is a great amount of time for a safari, but it would be quite short for a South African holiday. South Africa has a lot to offer and you can easily spend a two- or three-week holiday in this country of contrasts. Contrary to other safari countries in Africa, a typical South African holiday consists of several smaller safaris mixed in with other highlights. The most popular safari destination is Greater Kruger, which is made up of Kruger National Park and the private reserves bordering it. But there are other areas offering excellent wildlife viewing that are worth exploring too. And then there are the mountains, the cities, the scenic coastline of the Garden Route, and much more. You also have to consider that South Africa is a large country, and distances between destinations are usually long. Especially on a road trip, you might want to add a few extra days to your holiday to take in more of what South Africa has to offer.”

Can I combine my 10-day South Africa safari with a beach holiday?

“Yes, you definitely can combine a 10-day safari with a beach holiday in South Africa. After 10 days of wildlife viewing and sightseeing, you might like to end your holiday with a relaxing time on the beach. Well, South Africa, with its 2,850km coastline, has you covered. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape are perfect for a tropical beach holiday. There are many family-friendly resorts to choose from, as well as more-secluded romantic getaways. The southern beaches along the Garden Route are great in summer but cold in winter. Active visitors wanting to explore, walk or cycle as well as relax enjoy this area most. However, if you are looking for pure island bliss, you might want to hop on a plane to Mauritius or Seychelles.”

Where in South Africa should I go on safari?

“There are lots of options for a 10-day safari in South Africa. Most popular is Kruger National Park. This vast ecosystem is about the size of Israel and just a little smaller than Belgium. The south of the park is most accessible, but you could spend extra time and make your way north. As the landscapes and habitats change, so do the animals. Both guided and self-drive safaris are good options in Kruger, but you could consider a few days in one of the bordering private game reserves for a different experience. Here your expert guide will get you close to all of the Big Five in an open-top safari vehicle. Whereas you need to stick to the roads in Kruger, you’ll go off-road in the reserves, so expect some exciting close-up encounters here. This doesn’t come cheap but the whole package with luxury accommodation, gourmet food and outstanding service is worth every cent. The cluster of KwaZulu-Natal reserves is very different. This tropical area with rolling hills and lush vegetation is particularly scenic. Rhino are prolific here and the birding is outstanding. For an off-the-beaten-track safari, you should consider Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Wildlife densities are lower in this desert environment, but the wide-open spaces make for great viewing in a beautiful setting.”

What is the best time of the year for a trip in South Africa?

“The best time of the year for a 10-day safari in South Africa is from May to September. This is the South African winter, which corresponds to the Dry season in most of the country. The exception is the Cape Town area, which experiences winter rainfall. Water in the bush dries out as the Dry season progresses, and animals are easier to find as they gather around rivers and waterholes. The shriveling vegetation makes animal spotting easier too. Although this is the most productive time for wildlife viewing, you must keep in mind that early mornings and evenings can be bitterly cold in open vehicles. The shoulder month of September is perhaps best as it is the end of the Dry season, but temperatures start to increase a little. If you want to combine your safari with other highlights or time on the beach, you might prefer the warmer summer months from October to April. ”

Which animals am I likely to see?

“You are likely to see a big variety of animals on your 10-day safari in South Africa. Where the open plains of East Africa offer a chance to see huge numbers of grazers, South Africa offers more diversity. You’ve got a good chance of seeing the Big Five when spending three or four days in Kruger NP. Even more so in the adjacent private reserves where off-road driving makes sightings easier. Elephant, buffalo and giraffe are common throughout. Of the big cats, lion are easiest to see, but you need a fair amount of luck to see the secretive leopard in Kruger. However, this sought-after cat is the flagship species of the bordering Sabi Sands Game Reserve. There are lots of white rhino in southern Kruger, but the best place to see these endangered large mammals is in the KwaZulu-Natal reserves. What really sets South Africa apart is the variety in antelope species. Look out for the stately spiral-horned greater kudu or the majestic nyala, which is most common in KwaZulu-Natal. The red duiker can be seen scurrying away in coastal forests, while the diminutive steenbok, which freezes when spotted, is common throughout. The list can go on. You’ll probably get to see most animals on your bucket list and lots more.”

How much will a 10-day South Africa safari cost?

“South Africa is a relatively affordable safari destination. There are options for every budget. As a guideline, you can expect prices for a mid-range tour including a safari to start at about US$1800 per person, while luxury tours start at around US$4500 per person. As most roads and infrastructure in South Africa are quite good, the country lends itself to a self-drive safari. This is an affordable option if you like to travel independently. Then there is the choice of joining a group tour or booking a private safari. The former is usually more budget-friendly. There is a huge choice of accommodation options in South Africa. Lodges and rest camps in and outside the national parks are often moderately priced, but most private game reserves offer a luxury package and are priced much higher. Domestic flights between South African cities are well priced but high-end fly-in safaris where you fly directly to the reserve’s airstrips come with a hefty price tag. I recommend getting a few quotations before booking a 10-day South African safari. ”

Travel tips for South Africa trips

South Africa is home to unbelievable natural scenery, vibrant culture, colorful architecture, and deep history. As a result, there are so many things to do on South Africa tours. Here are some of our favorite things to do:

 • Take a cable car up Table Mountain, South Africa’s most iconic landmark
 • Hike along the Cape of Good Hope and see where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet
 • Spend a day in Cape Town , an oceanside city with malls, restaurants, gardens, history, and yes, even penguins
 • Explore Soweto township, once home to both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu
 • Take a ferry to Robben Island, the historic symbol of apartheid, where Nelson Mandela was jailed
 • Go on a safari in Kruger National Park and try to spot the Big Five: elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinoceroses

If you’re planning a trip to South Africa, consider traveling between May and September. During this time, the weather is a little cooler and you have a better chance of seeing more big game animals on your safari.

November through February is also a great time for South Africa trips—especially if you’re interested in birding. The temperatures remain pretty warm, and while it can be rainy, it’s an unforgettable experience as long as you’re prepared!

As you plan for one of our South Africa tours, here’s what you should remember to bring:

 • Sun protection, including sunscreen and a hat
 • A warm jacket for colder nights and early-morning safaris
 • Closed-toe shoes and long pants to protect yourself from bugs
 • Spare change to donate to community centers and buy souvenirs
 • Your camera! You don’t want to miss out on all the incredible memories you’ll make

Each of our group travel packages to South Africa have their own unique packing lists, so be sure to check those out, too.

Our South Africa tour packages range between 11 and 20 days. It’s such a large country with so many sights and activities, you’ll never feel like you’re there too long.

To learn more, check out our Cape Town Travel Guide .

One of the best parts of going on South Africa tours is trying the local cuisine. Here are some of the most popular foods:

 • Cape Malay curry, a blend of local produce and spices with meats and rice.
 • Chakalaka, a vegetable dish made of onions, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beans, and spices typically served on top of “pap”, a porridge made from white corn maize
 • Braai, a traditional South African barbecue and a mainstay of the culture
 • Biltong, a thinly sliced, air-dried cured meat—it’s a can’t-miss snack on all South Africa trips

For us, it comes down to ease. We’ve picked out all of the best spots for our guided tours of South Africa, so you never have to stress about what to do on your trip or how to get there. You can simply focus on the spectacular sightseeing.

10 Best African Countries for Safari

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

s africa tours

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

s africa tours

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

s africa tours

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Recommended Tours:

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliché

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside Europe and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much Africa into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your safari with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid, but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from Europe and Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavours and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travellers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavoursome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavoured with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaux of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travellers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalised and treated poorly by their European colonisers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalised. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

U.s. secretary of commerce gina raimondo to travel to kenya to highlight important bilateral commercial relationship, burgeoning digital opportunities to advance u.s. and kenyan societies and economies, office of public affairs.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo will travel to Nairobi, Kenya from April 23 to April 25. Secretary Raimondo will lead a delegation of private sector companies from the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA). She will highlight the U.S.-Kenya bilateral commercial and investment relationship and flourishing digital space in Kenya, and throughout Africa, that is helping to shape the world for the better and create exciting opportunities for partnerships with the United States. While in Nairobi, Secretary Raimondo will meet with Kenyan government officials, as well as trade and digital ministers from across Africa. She will also engage with U.S. and Kenyan private sector representatives and speak with women and youth leaders in science, technology and creative industries. The Secretary’s visit builds on the Department of Commerce-wide Africa strategy announced by Deputy Secretary Graves last fall at the AGOA forum in South Africa and underscores the enormous potential that comes with technological advances to support our societies and economies to address global challenges.
