  • Imbali’s Head Guide, Warren Deyzel, is a Finalist for Safari Guide of The Year 2023

Imbali Safari Lodge’s Head Guide, Warren Deyzel, has been chosen as a Safari Guide of The Year 2023 (SGOTY) finalist. This is a tremendous honour and a testament to the value that Warren and all of Africa’s guides contribute to a guest’s safari experience.

What is Safari Guide of the Year?

Safari Guide of the Year is an annual competition and event to generate awareness regarding the incredible people who dedicate their lives to tourism and wildlife. The competition sees five expert guides go head-to-head in various tests of skill. Categories are as follows:

  • Game driving
  • Storytelling
  • Hosting and hospitality
  • Track and sign
  • Guided walks
  • Advanced rifle handling
  • Guided photographic experience
  • Bird slide and sound

This year, the finalists will compete in Hoedspruit at Kapama Private Game Reserve , the event’s host sponsor, from 2 – 7 June, with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) live-streaming from the fireside every evening, allowing keen viewers to get to know the finalists better.

Warren is competing against the cream of the crop, including Kimberlee Le Hanie of Lion Sands Game Reserve (part of the MORE Family Collection), Pioneer Moyo of Bushwise Field Guides, Jan Dykema of Shamwari Private Game Reserve , and Ruan Coetzee of Kapama Private Game Reserve.

These five finalists are the best of the best in the industry, all adhering to stringent qualifying criteria. Nominees must all:

  • Have a minimum of five years of guiding experience.
  • Have completed the Nature Site Guide (NQF4) qualification.
  • Be a member of FGASA.
  • Have the Trails Guide (NQF4) qualification.
  • Currently work as a field guide at a lodge, field guide training delivery partner, or as a freelance guide.

The Managing Director of FGASA, Michelle du Plessis, and the co-founder of SGOTY, Mike Karantonis, interview each nominee. From there, only five are selected to compete.

A massive ‘congratulations’ goes out to all the finalists for getting this far. We look forward to celebrating every single one of you and your successes.

safari guide of the year 2023

Anyone who has had the pleasure of exploring the beauty of the bushveld with Warren by their side will know how knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating he is. Originally from Johannesburg, Warren sought refuge from the bustle of the corporate world inside The Kruger National Park, where he completed his training as a Professional Trails Guide.

With mentoring and support, coupled with unrivalled dedication, commitment and sacrifice, Warren has since grown into a respected guide within the tourism industry. His passion for people and nature shines through in everything he does.

“This journey has brought me through the ranks of FGASA level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Back-up, Lead and Professional Trails, and finally through to the highest recognised qualification in guiding, Special Knowledge and Skills: Dangerous Game (SKS:DG). Along this journey of understanding the environment and being able to share this with guests from all over the world, I have been recognised as a Safari Guide of the Year finalist. It brings me great pleasure to represent Imbali Safari Lodge, my home of choice,” Warren says.

The entire Extraordinary team can’t wait to cheer Warren on and watch the winners’ announcement at the awards ceremony, where the usually khaki-clad guides will scrub up and don their fanciest formal wear in anticipation of the results.

We know our previous guests will support Warren wholeheartedly in his efforts. We’d love to hear from you regarding your experiences with Warren by your side on safari. Share your stories with us on social media using the hashtag #SGOTY.

What to Expect

Below is an article from James Tyrrell, winner of Safari Guide of the Year 2018 on his experience.

I had never agonized for so long over the call of an African Fish Eagle. “Surely that’s too easy?” “What if it’s a trick?” “Could be a drongo putting on a really good mimic…”

These were the ridiculous thoughts going through my head within minutes of the start of SGOTY 2018. Identifying bird calls is normally such a treat when out in the bush, but now, only a few calls into our first assessment, I could barely hold my pen my hands were sweating so much; I was second guessing myself on every question, and at one point I panicked and just wrote down White Browed Scrub-Robin as an answer three times in a row, in the hope that at least one of them would be right (none of them were!).

It’s pretty hilarious that when your guiding abilities are being scrutinized by some of the industry’s finest, the pressure can feel like it’s suddenly been cranked up to 11. Driving celebrity guests? No problem. 2 weeks with a high-profile international wildlife photographer on your vehicle? Piece of cake. Identify a francolin call you’ve heard 5 000 times before, during the SGOTY birding assessment? Uh-oh.

Lion Sands Field Guide Kimberlee (Kim) le Hanie won FGASA’s Safari Guide of the Year 2023 . As the first woman to win this title, and in celebration of Women’s Day, we asked Kim to share her experience.

“In 2017, I embarked on my journey in the guiding industry, eager to explore this incredible world of guiding. Witnessing my Head Guide's participation in SGOTY (Safari Guide of the Year) ignited a dream within me – to one day stand among the best guides in the industry. Aware of the long road ahead, I committed myself to continuous learning and improvement, striving to be the best guide I could be.

Fast forward 5.5 years, my time had come. Nominated by my peers at Lion Sands Sabi Sand , I eagerly awaited the email that would decide my fate. During those months of anticipation, my team and I immersed ourselves in intensive training , honing our tracking skills, studying bird calls, and spending time on the shooting range.

When the moment arrived to meet my fellow contestants, the energy in the room was electrifying. We were all nervous yet excited to spend a week together, learning from each other and sharing our passion for guiding. We were challenged with a series of activities, each designed to showcase our skills.

The competition included Track and Sign, photography drives, bird slide and sound tests, game drives, and bush walks. It was exhilarating to push my abilities and compete against industry legends. I placed second in Track and Sign , with Pioneer, an incredibly skilled human being, especially in tracking, taking the win.

During the bird slide and sound test, my dedication to practice paid off, securing first place in that category. Game drives are my passion, and the satisfaction of winning first prize in that category was immeasurable.

The Advanced Rifle Handling challenge put us to the test , and while I placed second, I was proud of my performance. No matter how comfortable you are on the range or with a rifle, when you are standing on that shooting line knowing that all eyes are on you, its daunting. The task was to shoot 5 rounds into a target placed at 12m. I took a deep breath, and I kept a steady hand and said to myself, “slow is smooth and smooth is fast”, I placed 5 rounds beautifully in the centre of the target. Next challenge was to place a round in the 12m then the 8m then the 4m and this exercise was timed. Finally, it was the well anticipated Hailey’s hop. In this exercise 3 targets are placed at 30m, 20m and 10m, the aim is to run to the 30m target, touch it, run back, shoot rounds into the 10,20 then 30. Run it again and repeat, it most definitely gets your heart rate going and almost simulates what a real-life scenario would feel like if you needed to place an anchor shot.

safari guide of the year 2023

However, it was the storytelling category made me the most nervous . It’s daunting to speak in front of industry experts, but I just spoke from the heart sharing the story of myself and my Tracker Jabu as we searched high and low to make our guests dream of seeing a leopard come true. I touched on how lucky we are to be able to do what we do. It must have gone well, regardless of my hands shaking like a leaf the entire time, I managed to take home the win for that category too.

As the week drew to a close, camaraderie grew between the contestants . We knew that regardless of the outcome, we had experienced a transformative week together.

The awards evening arrived, and the tension in the room was palpable. Each category winner was announced, and I was fortunate to take home several awards. Jan Dykema was named the runner-up, a deserving recognition of his exceptional skills.

The moment I had dreamed of…I was announced as the winner of Safari Guide of the Year 2023. The flood of emotions was overwhelming, not only because I had achieved my personal goal, but also because I had become the first-ever female to win this prestigious accolade in its 12-year history. It was a significant milestone for the industry and for women in guiding.

Now, with the dust settled and a sense of pride in my heart, I am more motivated than ever to continue my journey, constantly improving myself, and embracing the opportunity to do what I love. The experience at SGOTY has reinforced my passion for guiding , and I am eager to contribute to the industry's growth and inspire others to follow their dreams. ”

Kimberlee’s journey to becoming the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) Safari Guide of the Year began at the MORE Field Guide College and has been marked by her exceptional career at Marataba Safari Lodge and Lion Sands Game Reserve . Over the years, Kimberlee’s commitment to her craft has been unwavering. Her genuine passion for the environment has propelled her to go above and beyond, continuously seeking to develop her career through FGASA and enhance her guiding skills. Her dedication to her profession has made her a role model for aspiring guides.

“We are incredibly proud of Kim and all that she has achieved on her journey since she was a student in 2017 at MORE Field Guide College. Field guides play such an important educational aspect on a safari and Kim is an excellent ambassador for the natural world leading with passion and always growing in knowledge. She is well liked by all our guests, a true asset at Lion Sands.” – Robert More, Custodian and CEO, MORE Family Collection.

Winners of Safari Guide of the Year 2022

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

The Safari Guide of the Year 2022 competition was nothing short of spectacular. The five finalists spent the week showing off their skills in multiple events, from advanced rifle handling to bush walks, game drives, and track and sign. It was the ultimate show of skills and knowledge in the guiding industry, and Bushwise was thrilled to be the host sponsor. The finalists were:

Liam Henderson, the Homestead in Nambiti Game Reserve Reserve

Cameron Pearce, Ongava Game Reserve in Namibia

Nico Brits, Bushwise Trainer at our Mahlahla campus

Solomon Ndlovu, Singita in the Kruger National Park

Ruvan Grobler, Lion Sands in the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve

Bushwise staff with the five finalists for Safari Guide of the Year 2022

The week started with contestants, sponsors, judges and media arriving at our Kempiana campus at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC). Bushwise was proud to host this prestigious event back in the home of field guiding, the Greater Kruger National Park. This was also an excellent opportunity for us to show off our newest campus, where we train field guides in collaboration with SAWC .

This was the 11th annual SGOTY, an event that was started in 2011 by Mike Karontonis in collaboration with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA). Guests, judges, sponsors and other leaders in the safari industry were present to cheer the competitors on, while waiting with bated breath to see who would come out the winner overall, and in the individual categories.

Shown here, all five finalists for Safari Guide of the Year 2022. Throughout the week, one thing was very clear: this wasn’t just a competition, it was also a show of camaraderie between the finalists.

One thing that stood out for all attendees of this event: it wasn’t just about the competition, it was equally about the camaraderie and friendship shown between the finalists.

Whenever there was a moment to relax between activities, you could find the five contenders huddled in a circle, laughing and swapping stories. Their shared passion for the bush, love of wildlife, and years of experience brought them close together throughout the week.

A game drive vehicle full of guests at the Safari Guide of the Year competition, guided by Solomon Ndlovu.

But still – someone had to win! Without further ado, we present the overall winner of Safari Guide of the Year 2022: Cameron Pearce. Cameron was the overall winner of Safari Guide of the Year 2022. He also won in the categories of Guided Walk, Track and Sign, Birding and Storytelling.

Cameron Pearce, winner of the overall Safari Guide of the Year 2022 award. He also won best Guided Walk, Track & Sign, Birding, and Storytelling categories.

Nico Brits won the categories of Hospitality and Best on Camera. Throughout the week, Nico paid close attention to every guests’ needs, taking utmost care to ensure that each person felt welcome and cared for. When he was interviewed live on WildEarth, he did an excellent job of engaging with and entertaining the audience!

Nico Brits, Bushwise Trainer and winner of Best on Camera Presence and Best in Hospitality for Safari Guide of the Year 2022

Ruvan Grobler won the Photography category. During his evaluation drive, he did an incredible job of angling the vehicle for photos, stopping smoothly and exceeding many other requirements for a photographic safari.

Ruvan Grobler took home the award for Best Photographic Safari guide.

Solomon Ndlovu took the award for Advanced Rifle Handling. His shooting was quite impressive – hitting an exact spot multiple times on one target. When he would finish an exercise, the excitement in the crowd was palpable.

Solomon Ndlovu won Best in Advanced Rifle Handling.

Liam Henderson took home the best in Game Drive category. Liam navigated the reserve professionally, incorporating many elements of the ecosystem into his discussions,  interpreting animal behaviour and sharing excellent sightings with his guests.

Liam Henderson scored the best in the Game Drive category.

The wildlife played ball with us this week with some truly incredible sightings. When it came to interpreting animal behaviour, the finalists had more than enough opportunity to show off their knowledge!

A male lion pauses to scent-mark a tree. This lion was displaying territorial behaviour during one of the game drives.

On one game drive, we were even treated to double male lion sightings. But it wasn’t just about the big game – birdlife was also plentiful. On the guided walks, the finalists were also able to discuss some really interesting animal activity, such as an aardvark excavation.

Bushwise’s Darryn Murray, Sharin Myburgh, and Francois Theron with Solomon Ndlovu at the Safari Guide of the Year competition.

The final evening of the event was a bittersweet moment, as guests, judges, sponsors and finalists alike had made lifelong friendships throughout the week. As the countdown to next year’s event begins, we at Bushwise would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in Safari Guide of the Year 2022.

Sophie Niemman and Eugene Relling of Bushwise with the five finalists, as well as WildEarth host Steve Faulconbridge and Scott Yammin of the Southern African Wildlife College.

To Michelle du Plessis and everyone at FGASA, Mike Karontonis, the SAWC, WildEarth, RuggedWear, Sapmok, CanonRSA, AccidentAngels, Kruger2Canyon, and all individual sponsors who joined us: thank you for making SGOTY 2022 so memorable.

A special thank you as well to the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr Fish Mahlalela, who honoured us with his presence at this significant event. You can watch the SGOTY 2022 awards ceremony on the WildEarth YouTube channel .

Where are the cicadas? Use this interactive map to find Brood XIX, Brood XIII in 2024

In a few weeks, over a dozen states will be abuzz as trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from their yearslong underground stay.

Broods XIX and XIII will emerge in a combined 17 states, mostly in the Midwest and Southeast, in a rare, double brood event . These two broods last emerged together 221 years ago, and after this year are not predicted to do so again until 2245.

Once conditions are right, the two broods will emerge in massive numbers to feed, make noise, mate and die. Here's what to know about where to find the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII.

2024 double cicada broods: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX will emerge

The two cicada broods will emerge in a combined 17 states across the Southeast and Midwest, with an overlap in parts of Illinois and Iowa. They will emerge once soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in mid-May and lasting through late June.

The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a periodical cicada?

Both the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII are periodical cicadas, which emerge every 13 or 17 years across North America. They differ from annual cicadas, which emerge every year.

You may remember the last periodical brood to emerge in huge numbers: the 17-year Brood X that was found in 2021 throughout the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard.

Annual cicadas, which are dark green to black with green wing veins, are  typically larger than periodical cicadas , which are recognizable for their red eyes, red legs and red wing veins, according to North Carolina State University Extension.

Periodical cicadas emerge earlier, usually in mid-to-late May as opposed to annual cicadas in July and August. According to North Carolina State University Extension, annual cicadas begin mating, " singing conspicuously " and lying eggs about two weeks after they emerge. Their first nymphs will fall to the ground and begin feeding on roots under the soil, and fully-developed nymphs will emerge two years later and molt into adults.

Above ground, periodical cicadas have a similar life cycle, appear in much larger numbers and are much louder. At the end of their season, the next generation of nymphs move underground and remain for either 13 or 17 years.

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.

The ‘next-generation’ of CarPlay is launching this year; here’s everything we know

Avatar for Chance Miller

Since its initial introduction, Apple’s CarPlay platform has become ubiquitous. It’s available in the vast majority of new cars on the market today, and for good reason: it’s one of the top things people look for when buying a new car.

At WWDC in June 2022, Apple announced what it calls the “next generation of CarPlay.” This new CarPlay interface is set to debut in new cars this year, and it’s going to be a big change.

The first automakers signed on to support next-gen CarPlay? Porsche and Aston Martin. Here’s everything we know.

An all-new design for CarPlay

CarPlay was originally launched as “iOS in the Car” as part of iOS 7 and was rebranded as CarPlay shortly thereafter. Since that rebrand, CarPlay’s interface hasn’t changed much. The biggest design change came with iOS 13, when Apple introduced a new Dashboard interface with different “cards” for apps like Maps, Music, and more.

The “next generation” of CarPlay, however, will pretty much give the CarPlay interface a complete overhaul. While we haven’t gotten a chance to try the new CarPlay design, Apple’s imagery from WWDC offered a sneak peek.

safari guide of the year 2023

The new design still relies on a grid of app icons as its primary user interface element, but there are plenty of other changes surrounding that app grid. There will be a split-view style interface for showing multiple apps at the same time, as well as a Dock at the bottom with quick access to recently used apps.

Where the new CarPlay interface really shines, however, is with how it can take over your car’s entire infotainment system. This includes the center console display in its entirety, as well as any other displays like one behind the steering wheel.

Apple explains:

CarPlay has fundamentally changed the way people interact with their vehicles, and the next generation of CarPlay goes even further by deeply integrating with a car’s hardware. CarPlay will be able to provide content for multiple screens within the vehicle, creating an experience that is unified and consistent.

safari guide of the year 2023

One of Apple’s mock-ups of the new design uses a car that’s similar in style to the Mercedes-Benz EQS, where there’s basically one large display that stretches from behind the steering wheel to the passenger side. The interface looks to be completely modular, with different tiles and widgets for apps like Weather, HomeKit, and more.

Another mockup (at the top of this story) shows a car that’s very similar to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which features a portrait-oriented center display and a smaller instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.

In these images, you can see how the CarPlay interface can adjust based on different screen sizes. It’s where the “modularity” of the widgets and cards comes into play. But the key to this new design is that it completely replaces the car manufacturer’s software interface.

Deeper integration with cars

safari guide of the year 2023

If CarPlay is going to take over your entire in-car experience, then it needs to be able to access all of the features and functionality of your car. With this in mind, the “next generation” of CarPlay will have access to a much broader range of car features than before. Apple says that this is accomplished by your iPhone communicating with your car’s real-time system.

This includes things like climate control, fuel and battery charge levels, radio controls, instrument cluster data, and more. “CarPlay will seamlessly render the speed, fuel level, temperature, and more on the instrument cluster,” Apple says. “Deeper integration with the vehicle will allow users to do things like control the radio or change the climate directly through CarPlay.”

safari guide of the year 2023

Think of it this way: everything you previously had to use your car’s native interface for will now be fully integrated with CarPlay itself. In an ideal implementation, this means you’ll only ever interact with CarPlay.

Design customization

safari guide of the year 2023

With all of this data, the aforementioned design changes make a lot more sense. You’ll be able to personalize your driving experience by choosing different gauge cluster designs and managing the layout of the instrument cluster itself. Apple says it carefully crafted different instrument cluster designs, “ranging from the modern to the traditional.”

Apple also says there will be different layout options for yet another level of customization. You’ll also be able to pick custom fonts, font sizes, and font colors for the various aspects of your car’s interface.

Meanwhile, CarPlay widgets will give you at-a-glance information from apps like Music and Weather.

The first cars with next-generation CarPlay

safari guide of the year 2023

Apple first announced this next-generation CarPlay platform at WWDC 2022, promising the first vehicle announcements would happen before the end of 2023.

Sure enough, in December 2023 Apple announced its first two partners for next-generation CarPlay: Porsche and Aston Martin. Both automakers are committed to launching next-gen CarPlay at some point in 2024, but no further details are available just yet. Aston Martin has clarified that its DB12 sports car will be at least one of the cars to ship with next-generation CarPlay this year.

safari guide of the year 2023

Who else will support next-generation CarPlay?

Other than Porsche and Aston Martin, here are the automakers that have signed on to support this new CarPlay interface.

  • Mercedes-Benz

One thing to remember, however, is that the adoption and implementation details of this new CarPlay are outside of Apple’s control. Ultimately, it’ll be up to each of these automakers and their respective timelines to roll out the new CarPlay design. And most of those automakers have been quiet on their plans so far.

Apple says that it will share “more information about the next generation of CarPlay” ahead of the official launch later this year. Keep in mind that the design Apple showed off at WWDC was a “sneak peek,” so there will be changes between it and what’s ultimately released.

Hey, Racers: Here's How to Watch the Indy 500 This Year

The Indianapolis 500 is back. Here's everything you need to know.

May is all about racing. IndyCar takes over this month and makes a beautiful spectacle of an American tradition. The 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, and it is embedded in the DNA of motorsports. One of the three crown jewel races to participate in (the Monaco Grand Prix and 24 Hours of Le Mans are the other two), to win this makes an instant legend.

If you can't make it to Indianapolis, fear not. There are plenty of ways to catch all the high-octane action and learn how to watch the Indy 500 from the comfort of your own home. Over 300,000 spectators attend each year, so cozy viewing isn't a bad idea. While the options are always there to stream from IndyCar Live , there are more convenient options.

Josef Newgarden drinking the milk after winning the Indy 500 in 2023

Josef Newgarden drinking the milk after winning the Indy 500 in 2023

It's not just the race that captures the attention of gearheads worldwide. Eight practice sessions, from May 14th to May 20th (times will vary), leading up to the big day, all of which can be viewed on Peacock . These are really fun to watch to not only learn more about the teams and drivers but also to get a sense of how the track is laid out and how the cars move seamlessly (and quickly) around the banked ovals.

You'll want to keep an eye out for two very special days between that time. May 18th and 19th are the days for qualifying. These are the days when the drivers set their times to determine the order in which they will start the race.

Qualifying on the 18th also determines the final lineup for the participants; this is an all-day event starting at 11 AM EST and wrapping around 6 PM. On the 19th, the actual pole sitters and the rest of the grid are mapped out. This is a shorter time frame as the list of drivers is shortened, running from 3 PM EST to 6 PM. This provides further insight into who looks like a frontrunner (so to speak).

You can start picking out who to root for here, too. The fantastic commentators and Peacock crew really bring the magic of this race to life with a behind-the-scenes look at what makes Indy tick.

Only 33 cars get the chance to try and make all 200 laps of the famous race. This race draws drivers from outside of IndyCar, all vying for the opportunity to chug that bottle of milk.

There are a few notable drivers to peep this year. Kyle Larson will attempt to do the unthinkable. NASCAR has a rule that if you miss any race on the schedule, you are no longer eligible for the Championship. That said, he will pull double duty. Larson will compete in the Indy 500 in the morning, then head to North Carolina to drive in the Coca-Cola 600 (Which you can watch on FOX .). If that's not insanity, I don't know what it is.

IndyCar veteran HĂŠlio Castroneves has been crowned a winner four times and will attempt to make it five. This will also be his 24th consecutive Indy 500. This charming Brazilian is undoubtedly one to put your money on.

Katherine Legge will be the sole woman on the grid but is no stranger to the 500. This will be her fourth outing around the iconic oval.

I wouldn't count out last year's winner, Josef Newgarden. Although the start to his season has been rocky, knowing what it takes to fly into victory lane at Indianapolis should never be discredited.

You don't need to know motorsports to enjoy this renowned race, and the good news is that it will be easy to find on TV.

If you want to be engrossed in the action even further, I highly recommend the docuseries 100 Days to Indy. It follows a select group of drivers as they prepare for the momentous day. This is the second year The CW has produced the series, debuting this year on April 26th. All episodes can be streamed through the CW app or site or with a Hulu subscription .

Catch every lap and the illustrious milk presentation, complete with the kissing of the bricks, on Peacock and NBC at 11 AM EST.

How to Watch the Indy 500 on Peacock

Peacock is streaming the Indy 500 from when everything starts to when everything stops, meaning viewers won't miss a minute of the action with Peacock. Out of all modern streaming services, Peacock is one of the most affordable options in existence, which is great news for you. While there is no free trial, subscription options begin at just $5.99/month.

How to Watch the Indy 500 on Fubo

Fubo is the perfect choice for Indy 500 enthusiasts in 2024. With a seven-day free trial, you can catch all the thrilling moments of the race. After the trial, continue with Fubo for as low as $79.99 per month, giving you access to nearly 200 channels including NBC, so you won't miss a moment of the action. Plus, you can stream on up to 10 devices simultaneously, making it ideal for sharing the excitement with friends and family.

How to Watch the Indy 500 on DIRECTV STREAM

Gear up for the Indy 500 with DIRECTV STREAM 's exceptional live sports coverage. Catch all the race action on NBC and enjoy discounted sports packages. Choose the Entertainment + Sports Pack for $84.98 per month for the first three months, or the Choice + Sports Pack for $98.99 per month for the first month, saving $44.99. For even more content, consider the Ultimate + Sports Pack at $109.99 per month for the first month, with 160+ channels and a $44.99 savings.

How to Watch the Indy 500 on Sling TV

Just like the others, Sling TV provides an excellent option for catching the Indy 500. Currently, subscribers can snag the Orange + Blue Plan at half off, priced at only $30/month for the first month. This plan is ideal for those who want access to NBC, where the Indy 500 will be streaming. You can also opt for the Blue Plan by itself which is also half off for your first month at $22.50.

How to Watch the Indy 500 on Hulu + Live TV

Hulu + Live TV is your go-to choice for the Indy 500 and more. For $77 per month, enjoy live coverage of the race on NBC, along with a variety of TV shows, movies, and entertainment options. With features like unlimited DVR and the ability to stream on two screens at once, it's perfect for households with diverse interests. Plus, you also get Disney+ for those post-race family movie nights. If you want more than just sports, this package is worth considering.

How to Watch the Indy 500 from anywhere with a VPN

If you're outside the United States but don't want to miss the Indy 500, VPN services like ExpressVPN or Private Internet Access can help. They mask your location, allowing you to access streaming services as if you're in the US, no matter where you are. Private Internet Access starts at just $2 per month, while ExpressVPN is currently offering a 49% discount on its annual subscription.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ( AHRQ )

Health Resources and Services Administration ( HRSA )

This Notice supersedes  NOT-OD-23-076  and establishes stipend levels for fiscal year (FY) 2024 Kirschstein-NRSA awards for undergraduate, predoctoral, and postdoctoral trainees and fellows, as shown in the tables below which reflects the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 ( Public Law 118-047 ), signed into law on March 23, 2024. NIH is being responsive, as much as possible given the constrained budget environment, to the Advisory Committee to the Director Working Group on Re-Envisioning NIH-Supported Postdoctoral Training report recommendations. In fact, FY 2024 stipend levels for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees and fellows represents the largest year-over-year increase in recent history. We are committed to reaching the $70,000 recommendation over the next 3-4 years, as appropriations allow.  The Training Related Expenses and Institutional Allowances for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees and fellows reflect a moderate increase. The Tuition and Fees for all educational levels remain unchanged from the prior budget year. See  NIH Funding Strategies for guidance on current NIH Fiscal Operations.

The budgetary categories described in this Notice apply only to Kirschstein-NRSA awards made with FY 2024 funds. All FY 2024 awards previously issued using  NOT-OD-23-076 will be revised to adjust funding to the FY 2024 levels. Appointments to institutional training grants that have already been awarded in FY 2024 must be amended to reflect the FY 2024 stipend levels once the training grant award has been adjusted by NIH. Amended appointments must be submitted through xTrain in the eRA Commons. Retroactive adjustments or supplementation of stipends or other budgetary categories with Kirschstein-NRSA funds for an award made prior to October 1, 2023, are not permitted.

Stipends Effective with all Kirschstein-NRSA awards made on or after October 1, 2023, the following annual stipend levels apply to all individuals receiving support through institutional research training grants or individual fellowships.

Undergraduates: For institutional training grants supporting undergraduate trainees (T34, TL4), appointments for undergraduate candidates will continue to be made by distinct categories (i.e., Freshmen/Sophomores and Juniors/Seniors), but the stipend levels for the categories will be the same:

Predoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T35, T90, TL1) and individual fellowships (F30, F31), one stipend level is used for all predoctoral candidates, regardless of the level of experience.

Postdoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T90, TL1) and individual fellowships (F32), the stipend level for the entire first year of support is determined by the number of full years of relevant postdoctoral experience when the award is issued. Relevant experience may include research experience (including industrial), teaching assistantship, internship, residency, clinical duties, or other time spent in a health-related field beyond that of the qualifying doctoral degree. Once the appropriate stipend level has been determined, the trainee or fellow must be paid at that level for the entire grant year. The stipend for each additional year of Kirschstein-NRSA support is the next level in the stipend structure and does not change mid-year.

Senior Fellows (F33 only): The stipend level must be commensurate with the base salary or remuneration that would have been paid by the institution with which the individual is permanently affiliated when the award is issued but cannot exceed the current Kirschstein-NRSA stipend limit set by the NIH for those with 7 or more years of experience. The level of Kirschstein-NRSA support will take into account concurrent salary support provided by the institution and the policy of the sponsoring institution. NIH support does not provide fringe benefits for senior fellows.

Relevant Policies Current stipend levels are to be used in the preparation of future competing and non-competing NRSA institutional training grant and individual fellowship applications. They will be administratively applied to all applications currently in the review process.

NRSA support is limited to 5 years for predoctoral trainees (6 years for dual-degree training), and 3 years for postdoctoral fellows. The NIH provides eight levels of postdoctoral stipends to accommodate individuals who complete other forms of health-related training prior to accepting a Kirschstein-NRSA supported position. (The presence of eight discrete levels of experience, however, does not constitute an endorsement of extended periods of postdoctoral research training).

It should be noted that the maximum amount that NIH will award to support the compensation package for a graduate student research assistant remains at the zero level postdoctoral stipend, as described in  the NIH Grants Policy Statement 2.3.7.9 .

Tuition and Fees, Training Related Expenses, and Institutional Allowance for Kirschstein-NRSA Recipients

The NIH will provide funds for Tuition and Fees, Training Related Expenses, and Institutional Allowance as detailed below.

A. Tuition and Fees

Undergraduate and Predoctoral Trainees and Fellows: For institutional training grants (T32, T34, T35, T90, TL1, TL4) and individual fellowships (F30, F31), an amount per predoctoral trainee or fellow equal to 60% of the actual tuition level at the applicant institution, up to $16,000 per year, will be provided.
