Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Orlando, Central Florida, Florida, United States

  • Full Review
  • One of Disney’s Deluxe Resort Hotels, with incredible African-inspired decor
  • Hotel is surrounded by four savannas, home to 30 species of African wildlife
  • Safari lodge-like rooms with carved furniture and mosquito net canopies
  • Most rooms have balconies that overlook one of the savannas
  • Large zero-entry pool with a waterslide and tiny kiddy pool
  • Two restaurants serving African and American cuisines
  • Club Level includes lounge access and concierge service at the Kiliminjaro Club
  • Arcade-style game room, kids' club, and an outdoor playground
  • Disney perks like Extra Magic Hours and express luggage transport
  • Large gift shop with Disney souvenirs and sundries
  • Small gym and massage center
  • 24-hour self-service laundry room
  • Free parking and Wi-Fi
  • Far from most Disney attractions
  • No monorail or water taxi service -- Disney shuttle busses only
  • Dining on-site without reservations is nearly impossible
  • Front desk lines can be long (common at Disney hotels)
  • Only one pool (most Deluxe Resort Hotels have multiple)

Bottom Line

Modeled after a traditional "kraal" (village), Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge brings a slice of Africa to Orlando. Surrounded by four massive savannas, this 972-room upscale hotel offers guests a hands-on safari experience. Balconies overlook zebra watering holes, safari guides are on-hand to explain the differences between gazelle species, and custom trucks give guests special access to giraffes, impalas, and wildebeest. Rooms are infused with authentic African decor and artwork, and the hotel’s top-notch amenities like a pool, multiple restaurants, and a fitness center, make it one of Disney’s best Deluxe properties. However, it’s at least a 10-minute drive from most Disney attractions, and there’s no monorail or water taxi service (only shuttle buses). The Grand Floridian offers more convenient transportation options, but it doesn’t have AKL’s intriguing African theme.

Oyster Hotel Review

What are the grounds and scene like at disney’s animal kingdom lodge, this african-themed disney property feels equally adult- and kid-friendly, with upscale safari decor, roaming animals, and multiple features. .

safari hotel disney

One of Disney’s most majestic hotel lobbies, the entryway at the Animal Kingdom Lodge is a sight to behold. Enormous lotus-shaped canvas chandeliers hang from a vaulted thatched ceiling, where skylights flood the room with natural light. Tribal relics hang from the walls, and a giant suspension bridge connects the upper floors. Cozy seating areas are arranged around kilim rugs, and carved armoires display glass-encased artwork. At the far end of the room, a floor-to-ceiling window offers sweeping views of the savannas.

Animal Kingdom Lodge’s thematic elements are immediately impressive (perhaps some of Disney’s best), but some travelers may find the theme over-the-top or gimmicky (those that do will probably feel out of step with any properties on Disney grounds). However, sticklers for authenticity will be happy to know that Disney infuses the property with plenty of African cultural elements. Guests will find illustrated Fante proverbs in their rooms, South African pap and bobotie at the breakfast buffet, and a stunning Igbo Ijele at the center of the lobby. The Igbo Ijele is a 16-foot tall Nigerian tribal mask, and only one of 380 museum quality art pieces found throughout the hotel. In fact, the Animal Kingdom Lodge houses the largest collection of African art outside of the continent.

Obviously, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is a family-friendly resort. Besides a large swimming pool and cool safari features, the hotel has a kids’ club, an arcade, and regularly scheduled kid-centric activities, like campfire s’mores making or African instrument lessons. But the hotel also appeals to adults -- especially animal lovers -- more than other Disney properties. Although there’s only one pool, while most Deluxe Resort Hotels have multiple, the one here is huge.

Where is Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Located in Orlando?

Across from animal kingdom, but at least a 10-minute drive from other disney attractions and 30-minute drive from orlando international airport.  .

Built in 2001, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is actually Disney’s newest property. Because of this, the hotel is located farther from Disney attractions than most of the other resorts on the Disney compound. However, it’s just across the street from the Animal Kingdom Theme Park. AKL doesn’t offer monorail or water taxi service, so guests relying on Disney transportation will have to use the shuttle buses (the slowest Disney transportation method). Though Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios are all within a 10- to 14-minute drive, it can take much longer to reach these parks via bus. Blizzard Beach is a quick four-minute drive from the property, while Typhoon Lagoon and Disney Springs are farther afield, at 12 and 14 minutes, respectively. Downtown Disney is a 15-minute drive or roughly 30 minutes via shuttle bus. Outside of Disney, Sea World is a 16-minute drive, Universal Studios is a 17-minute drive, and Orlando International Airport is a 30-minute drive.

What are the Rooms and Their Views Like at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Rooms have safari-themed decor, standard disney amenities, and furnished balconies – most with savanna views..

safari hotel disney

Like the lobby, guest rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge have an African safari theme. Intricate wooden headboards feature symbolic tribal carvings and mosquito nets mimic the bed coverings of Southern Africa’s tented camps. Ghanaian woven baskets hang on the walls, along with illustrated Fante proverbs and wrought-iron sconces. Flat-screen TVs are housed in clawfoot armoires, and additional amenities include mini-fridges and single-cup coffeemakers. Closets are stocked with ironing equipment and key-operated safes. Bathrooms feature the classic Disney layout -- sinks and vanities in one room, shower/tub combos and toilets in another -- and decor is impressive. Custom wallpaper here depicts some of Africa’s most important sights, like Mt. Kilimanjaro, Victoria Falls, and Ngorongoro Crater. Beige granite and double sinks are nice touches, and the provided toiletries are the standard Disney products. All of AKL’s rooms have furnished balconies, many of which overlook one of the property’s four savannas (though some have views of the parking lot).

The majority of rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge are Standard Rooms with one king or two queen-size beds, although families with young children can also request a room with one queen bed and one bunk bed. Standard Rooms are subdivided by their views. Standard View Rooms comprise the entry-level category, and overlook the parking lot. Pool View Rooms (you guessed it) overlook the pool, but do not have savanna views. Savanna View Rooms are the hotel’s most expensive and most popular option. From the Savanna View Rooms, guests can spot wildlife roaming the grounds at all hours. For some travelers, this is a priceless feature, for others it’s a pointless upgrade, considering the hotel has dozens of communal wildlife viewing decks across the property.

Like other hotels in Disney’s Deluxe category, Animal Kingdom Lodge has a private Club Level. The Club Level rooms offer access to a private lounge that serves continental breakfast, snacks, and drinks throughout the day. Club-level guests also receive personal check-in and concierge service, which can be a particularly nice perk, considering the hotel’s typically long front desk lines. Besides Standard Rooms, the Club Level also offers one- and two-bedroom suites.

What’s the Pool Like at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?

The huge freeform pool has a waterslide, but it’s the only one on-site.  .

safari hotel disney

Unlike other Deluxe Resort Hotels, Animal Kingdom Lodge only has one pool, Uzima Springs, but it’s huge. Guests can access the Samawati Springs pool at the neighboring Kidani Village (AKL’s separate villas property), but it’s a long walk from the hotel. Uzima Springs is an 11,000 square foot freeform pool with both zero-entry and traditional stepped entrances. The pool is surrounded by tons of lounge chairs, and always feels crowded. Kids typically dominate the pool scene, thanks to the 67-foot-long waterslide. There’s a tiny wading pool for toddlers, but AKL doesn’t have a kiddie splash zone like other Disney properties. Next to the pool there are several whirlpools, an outdoor playground, and an open-air bar that serves snacks and drinks throughout the day.

What Restaurants and Bars are Available at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?

An excellent array of african food, along with typical american dishes and a lounge..

safari hotel disney

Dining at Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a brief introduction to African culinary traditions. Jiko, the hotel’s signature a la carte restaurant, skillfully infuses African flavors into familiar dishes. Guests can expect exotic ingredients like fenugreek, piri piri, cassava, and chermoula to be paired with the likes of roasted chicken, halibut, and filet mignon. Guests can also choose wines from an extensive South African wine list. At dinnertime, the restaurant’s wood-fired ovens fill the dining room with aromas of freshly baked bread and roasted meats. Dark woods and vibrant colors give Jiko a quintessential African feel. Reservations are strongly recommended. It’s nearly impossible to be accommodated as a walk-in, no matter the time of year.

Boma, the hotel’s buffet restaurant, is open for breakfast and dinner. Reservations are strongly recommended for dinner time. Reservations aren’t accepted for breakfast, but breakfast-goers will undoubtedly have to wait to be seated. During our visit, when we arrived for breakfast at the restaurant’s early opening time, there was already a line at the host stand. Boma’s buffet is a force to be reckoned with -- it’s huge and offers tons of food. American breakfast favorites like eggs, omelets, pancakes, and waffles sit alongside African specialties like pap, bobotie, and chakalaka. For dinner, the buffet introduces more African flavors with Ghanian oxtail stew, Nigerian fufu, Tunisian couscous, and South African geelrys.

The Mara, named for the river that flows through Kenya and Tanzania, is Animal Kingdom Lodge’s quick-service restaurant. The quick-service concept is incredibly popular across the Disney brand and is known for its varied options, tasty food, and unbelievable cleanliness. In the mornings, guests can swing by for coffee, bacon and eggs, and Mickey waffles, while lunch and dinner hours feature American favorites like burgers, grilled cheese, and flatbreads. It also sells snacks and desserts like chips, doughnuts, and ice cream bars. Both indoor and outdoor seating are on hand.

Victoria Falls Lounge is a few steps down from the lobby and overlooks Boma’s dining room. This is the property's only bar apart from the poolside one. The full bar menu covers sandwiches and appetizers, and serves a variety of specialty cocktails, African beers, and South African wines.

What Other Features are at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Tons of great amenities include four savannas with 30 species of wildlife..

safari hotel disney

Many guests choose to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge because of its unique setting in the middle of four diverse savannas. More than 30 species of African wildlife live on the property, including zebras, giraffes, gazelles, and flamingos. The hotel has dozens of viewing areas across the grounds, many of which are staffed by in-house wildlife experts who can explain the animals’ behavioral patterns, eating habits, and idiosyncrasies. Guests can also book private safaris along the hotel’s grounds.

Animal Kingdom Lodge also has a handful of nice amenities, including a huge souvenir shop with Disney paraphernalia and sundries, a 24-hour self-service laundry room, and a signature Disney arcade-style game room. Wi-Fi and standard parking are free, and guests are entitled to Disney hotel benefits, like Extra Magic Hours and the Magical Express luggage transportation service. As mentioned, Animal Kingdom Lodge does not have monorail or water taxi service, only Disney shuttle busses.

Most Disney hotels do not have fitness centers. If they do, their gyms are typically small. Animal Kingdom Lodge falls into the latter category -- its gym is nicely equipped with modern cardio and weight-lifting machines, but the room is tiny for a resort of this size. AKL doesn’t have a full-service spa, but it has a massage center, where guests can book massages and facials.

What does Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Offer for Families?

An on-site kids' club and lots of family-centric activities keep families entertained..

Simba’s Clubhouse is the on-site kids' club where children ages 3 to 12 can participate in regularly scheduled activities throughout the course of the day. Kids can play with Disney toys, watch movies, create arts and crafts, and eat kid-friendly snacks. The kids’ club isn’t free, but parents dining at Boma or Jiko receive one free hour with a valid dinner receipt. Besides the kids' club, the hotel regularly hosts family-friendly activities across the property. Families can make s’mores on an outdoor fire pit, learn to play African instruments, or participate in group storytelling sessions.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Review

For many (us here at Park Savers included), where you choose to stay for your Walt Disney World vacation is half the magic. From themed rooms and dining to perks like not having to track down your car in the Epcot parking lot, staying at one of the Disney resorts doesn’t just make your trip easier; it can also be an attraction in and of itself. That is especially the case at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Right next door to Animal Kingdom Theme Park, the resort is basically a Disney safari hotel tucked away in the largest theme park in the world. And honestly, what’s not to like about that? So, we decided to stop by the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge and check out what the resort has to offer. Keep reading for everything you need to know in this Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge guide, and our take on what you can expect during a stay there. (Updated July 7, 2023)

Lodge hotel surrounded by blue sky

Staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, as we mentioned earlier, is located next door to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park and is split into two main parts: the main hotel, called Jambo House, and Kidani Village, the resort’s Disney Vacation Club villas. In fact, if we’re getting technical, these are actually considered two separate Disney hotels, namely Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village.

Both are what Disney calls “deluxe”, which is basically just code for expensive. Yes, deluxe resort hotels and villas are among the costliest stays on Disney property. And while laying your head at Animal Kingdom Lodge will certainly cost you a pretty penny (more on that in a bit), it’s also certain to be a trip that you won’t soon forget. Plus, as far as Disney’s deluxe resorts go, this magnificent resort hotel is actually one of the more affordable ones.

Although a night at this Animal Kingdom hotel is steep, we’d argue that it’s totally worth it, thanks to some amenities that are completely unmatched by other Disney resorts. We’re talkin’, sweeping views of lush savannas and over 30 species of African wildlife, specialist-led animal programs and exclusive safaris, and award-winning dining all squeezed into an environment that makes you feel as if you’ve been plucked from the tourist jungle of Central Florida and transported to lodge a bit closer to South Africa or Kenya. In other words, a stay here feels like you’re on your own African safari adventure, without the costly plane ticket or passport. If you think that sounds like a pretty amazing place to stay whether you’re at Disney World or not, we can’t agree with you more.

In fact, the only real downside of Animal Kingdom Lodge is that, with the exception of Animal Kingdom, it’s a bit farther away from the other Disney theme parks. Accordingly, if you’re planning to spend the day at Magic Kingdom, Epcot or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it’s going to take you a little bit longer for you to get there. So, be sure to plan accordingly.

Hotel room with TV and couch

Animal Kingdom Lodge Rooms

Everyone has different priorities when picking a hotel room. Some are ok with bare-bones accommodations, while others want it all – the more bells and whistles, the better. Even though nothing about Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge will ever be considered scaled-back, guests shouldn’t expect traditional luxury.

Given that you’re meant to feel like you’re at a grand lodge on a nature preserve somewhere in Africa, the vibe does feel a tad rustic, which is a welcome departure from many of the other resorts on property. You can also expect a variety of African or African-inspired touches throughout, from the fabrics and patterns that are chosen to the art of the walls. In fact, the resort actually boasts one of the largest collections of African art outside of Africa.

Even the design and layout of the resort is inspired by a traditional African kraal , a South African village made up of huts and surrounded by a fence. Not only is this a subtle nod to the resort’s inspiration, but it also ensures that a fair number of the guestrooms have a view of the lush savannas, some of the highlights of the resort.

Amenities offered in your room will vary depending on whether you’re staying at Jambo House or Kidani Village. Basic amenities are offered in the guestrooms and suites at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House, but you can always expect to find a hair dryer, coffee maker, ironing board and iron, mini-fridge, and an in-room safe. A villa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas, in contrast, will have many of the conveniences of home including a toaster, microwave, TV, DVD player, and whirlpool tub, as well as everything listed above.

Jambo House

Up at Jambo House, rooms are enveloped in warming tones like oranges and reds. It’s like the opening scene from the Lion King made real. You know the one – where a golden sun rises to meet a rust-red-turned-burnt-orange sky, and the animals scurry to greet the day. Intricately carved, dark wood furniture can also be found throughout.

Jambo House currently boasts a 4.5 on TripAdvisor , coming in in the top 15% of all Orlando hotels. Guests can decide from a variety of room types, but in general, the main thing you’ll want to keep in mind is the view.

If Jambo House looks like it’s been inspired by a South African sunrise, then over at Kidani Village and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas, with taupes and darker browns coming into play, it feels a bit closer to dusk.  Kidani Village also touts a 4.5 on TripAdvisor , landing it in the top 23% of all specialty lodging in Orlando. As at Jambo House, the view should be a deciding factor when considering with of the room types you want to book.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Prices

As we already mentioned, both Jambo House and Kidani Village are considered deluxe Disney hotels, making them among the most expensive Disney resorts. Aside from which room type you choose, your room rate will also depend on when you travel to Disney. Holidays and marathon weekends can be especially pricey.

For example, smaller rooms overlooking the parking lot will cost less than an Animal Kingdom villa around Christmas and New Year’s. Here’s what you can expect to pay for each room type at Animal Kingdom Lodge in 2023 (refer to the Walt Disney World website for the most up-to-date rates):

  • Standard View: $469 to $861
  • Pool View: $506 to $903
  • Savanna View: $672 to $1,132
  • Club-Level Savanna View: $804 to $1,485
  • Standard View 1-Bedroom Suite: $1,236 to $2,138
  • 1-Bedroom Suite: $1,315 to $2,404
  • 2-Bedroom Suite: $2,104 to $3,792

Animal Kingdom Lodge Amenities

Disney’s deluxe resorts boast some of the best resort amenities in all of Walt Disney World, and the Animal Kingdom Lodge is no exception. In fact, we’d argue that these offerings are what make the whole resort. Here’s a quick rundown of everything guests can look forward to:

Animal Kingdom Lodge Restaurants

Restaurant with tables

As a deluxe resort, Disney’s Animal Kingdom hotel is blessed with an abundance of dining options. Even better, most of them are really, really good. Whether gorging yourself on Disney-friendly takes on African favorites (and Zebra Domes!) at Boma, eating your weight in naan as you watch the zebras and giraffes at Sanaa, or sipping on a South African vintage or two at Jiko, there are enough memory-making meals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas to make you want to come back again and again.

In addition to the restaurants, Animal Kingdom also has a number of lounges and pool bars perfect for unwinding with a drink after a long day of park hopping. These include the Maji Pool Bar, Uzima Springs Pool Bar, Victoria Falls Lounge, Cape Town Lounge and Wine Bar, and Sanaa Lounge.

The Mara is Animal Kingdom Lodge’s quick-service restaurant and is located in Jambo House. Fun fact: if you develop an addiction to Zebra Domes while dining at Boma, you can also buy them here. If that isn’t reason enough to check out this quick-service eatery, we don’t know what is.

Boma – Flavors of Africa

Located in Jambo House, Boma serves breakfast and lunch and is the resort’s all-you-can-eat buffet . Although a boma refers to a fortified outpost in Swahili, this table-service restaurant feels more like a bustling marketplace. Despite the themed setting, breakfast is a decidedly more American-style affair, though you will find a few more adventurous options like bobotie.

Dinner features a rotating menu of African-inspired specialties, with buffet islands themed around a specific food item like bread, soups, salads, meats, and desserts. While this may sound intimidating to some people, we can assure you that this is African food presented in the most American-tastebud-friendly way possible. This is Disney, after all! With a buffet stand for kid-friendly options like chicken bites, mac and cheese, and pasta with meatballs, there’s also a considerable safety net.

Although you might be tempted to load up on all the meat at Boma, don’t! Trust us, you’ll want to save some precious stomach space for all that delicious soup just a few steps away. Yes, soup. From chicken-corn chowder and seafood gumbo to peanut stew and coconut-chicken-curry soup, you will not want to miss a bowl or three of these. Personally, the carrot-ginger soup is basically the nectar of the gods. Oh, and just try to not eat more than one Zebra Dome. We dare you.

Overall, as the top Disney restaurant for many Walt Disney World fans, this writer included, we highly recommend giving Boma a try if you’re at all curious. And if you do go for dinner, remember that the menu rotates daily, so if you’re hoping for something specific, be sure to see if you can find the relevant menu online to make sure you won’t be disappointed. Due to the restaurant’s popularity, the wait to be seated can be long even with a reservation. So, get a drink at the nearby Victoria Falls Lounge while you wait.

Jiko – The Cooking Place

Located next door to Boma, Jiko is the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s signature dining option. A jiko is a stove in Swahili, so, it’s only right that Jiko’s menu features dishes cooked in wood-burning ovens.

Although flavors from across the continent appear throughout – Ethiopian tibs, Moroccan lamb, Botswana-style short ribs, and Cape Malay seafood curry are all on the menu – South African flavors are evident throughout thanks to elements like peri peri, biltong, braii spice, and, of course, South African wine.

Tucked away in Kidani Village, Sanaa offers guests African-Indian fusion cuisine with a view of the Sunset Savanna. As you might imagine, the view is the star here. Fortunately, the windows are huge and plentiful, creating tons of room to see the menagerie of African wildlife even if you aren’t right next to the windows.

Currently, the restaurant serves table-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While breakfast at Boma is pretty standard, Sanaa’s breakfast is filled with more adventurous flavors like French toast with saffron-scented raisins and chai whipped cream or a breakfast sandwich with masala potatoes. So, if you’re trying to decide between the two, be sure to plan accordingly.

Lunch and dinner offer an array of Indian-inspired dishes like curries, biryani, and samosas. However, no meal at Sanaa is complete without the bread service. This sampler is a great way to try a ton of flavors, and still have some left over to wipe up all that tasty sauce with.

Outdoor pool at night

Animal Kingdom Lodge Pools

When you can’t make it to a beach, no trip to Florida is complete without a pool , and luckily, guests of the Animal Kingdom Lodge are lucky to have two dazzling pool areas to choose from. The Uzima Springs Pool can be found near Jambo House. This sprawling 11,000-square-foot oasis has a 67-foot waterslide and a zero-depth entry like that of a natural beach. Plus, the whole pool looks out on the Uzima Savanna. Talk about a view! In between trips down the slide, guests can relax with a drink or a snack at the nearby Uzima Springs Pool Bar.

The smaller, 4,700-square-foot Samawati Springs Pool can be found over in Kidani Village. Though smaller, what it lacks in size, it makes up for with a waterslide that is almost twice the length of the one at the Uzima Springs Pool. Kids can also play at Uwanja Camp, a water playground divided into three, age-specific zones. Guests can also unwind at the Maji Pool Bar nearby. Hot tubs are also available at both Jambo House and Kidani Village, perfect for unwinding after a long day in the theme parks.

Merchandise Locations

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has two merchandise outlets: the Johari Treasures gift shop at Kidani Village and the Zawadi Marketplace gift shop at Jambo House. Both stock an array of Disney merchandise, sundries, snacks, and even African art and crafts. These include milk, cereal, bread, butter, jam, eggs, condiments, donuts, ice cream, beer and wine, soda, medicine, personal items and more.

Other Recreation at Animal Kingdom Lodge

So, what can you do at this Disney deluxe resort when you aren’t hanging out at the theme parks? Of course, you can rely on any Disney World resort to have the basics: at least one pool, at least one dining outlet, and at least one shop to pick up Disney merch and whatever else you forgot. But depending on which Disney resort you stay at, you might also have access to a whole bunch more.

Adult guests looking to get in a workout or take their relaxation to the next level can actually do both at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas, with the Zahanati Massage & Fitness Center in Jambo House and the Survival of the Fittest Fitness Center (say that two times fast) at Kidani Village.

As for the kiddos and teens, they can get a break from mom and dad (or is it the other way around?) at one of the resort’s arcades or playgrounds. Kidani Village also houses a Community Hall filled with video games, ping-pong, and billiards, as well as basketball and tennis courts. Family-friendly favorite campfire activities around the fire pit and Movies Under the Stars also take place at both parts of the resort.

All of these are pretty standard amenities at Disney deluxe resorts. At Animal Kingdom Lodge, however, it’s the special animal programs that really sparkle. Thanks to the resort’s savannas, all Walt Disney World guests have the opportunity to go on not one, but two unique animal adventures: Sense of Africa at Jambo House, a behind-the-scenes tour with breakfast at Boma, a morning safari, and up-close animal encounters, and Starlight Safari at Kidani Village, an after-dark game drive. Guests specifically of Animal Kingdom Lodge also have exclusive access to the Wanyama Safari and Dinner, a multi-course meal followed by a tour of the savannas.

Finally, for those who would rather observe nature from afar (and with a drink in hand), Wild About Painting is basically Disney’s version of paint-and-sip, except your inspiration is the savanna you’ll be gazing out upon (and your complimentary, alcoholic beverage).

Animal Kingdom Lodge FAQs

Have a burning question about Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas that we haven’t answered yet? Keep reading below.

Can you see animals from Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Yes! In fact, exotic animals are basically the highlight of the entire resort. Much of the resort is surrounded by savanna, with viewing areas, restaurants, pools, and even guest rooms looking out over the animals. Nature lovers can also opt to enjoy a variety of animal experiences including special safaris and other programming.

Can you feed giraffes at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Before you get too excited, Giraffe Manor this is not (for those of you who don’t know what that is, look it up on Instagram – you’ll thank us later). The only time you might get a chance to feed giraffes is on the Sense of Africa backstage tour we mentioned above, and even then, don’t quote us on that. However, we think that all the opportunities to see these beautiful creatures both close-up and from afar more than make up for it.

Can you see fireworks from Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Nope! Animals are the focus at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and for anyone who has ever had a dog knows, fireworks may not be the best idea if you want to keep all those animals happy. Exotic animals like zebras, giraffes and other African wildlife are no exception. Fortunately, there are plenty of other spots around Walt Disney World where you can view one of the nighttime spectaculars without being in a park .

What is the best room at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Without a doubt, a savanna-view room isthe cream of the crop. After all, what’s better than looking out your window after waking up to see zebras walking by? Not much. Best of all, a variety of room types are available with a savanna view, so it’s easy to pick one to fit the size of your party.

Is breakfast included at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

No. While breakfast is available at multiple locations throughout Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas, it is not included with your stay there. An exception would be if you booked a Disney Dining Plan with the rest of your vacation.

Which popular attractions are close to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?

As you can guess from the name of the resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge is located right next door to Animal Kingdom Park . It is also near Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park and the Winter Summerland Mini-Golf Course . Of course, the rest of Walt Disney World is just a short drive or bus ride away.

How long does it take to get from Animal Kingdom Lodge to Animal Kingdom Park?

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park is just a short drive away, approximately eight minutes, from its sister resort. Guests of the resort can also take a shuttle bus to and from the park, however, the ride will likely be longer due to stops and needing to wait for it to arrive.

Can you walk from Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge to Animal Kingdom Park?

Although it’s possible, we wouldn’t recommend it. First, it would likely take you almost an hour to get there as there isn’t a direct walking path available between the two. Second, there aren’t really any sidewalks, so you’d have to scoot to stay out of the way of traffic. Best to be safe, save time, and stick to a car or bus.

Set of chairs in a courtyard

Is the Animal Kingdom Lodge worth it?

Definitely! If you can afford it, anyway. As we’ve already established, staying at Disney’s safari hotel has the potential to be very expensive. Even the most basic room will run you over $400 for a single night during the low season. That’s pretty steep considering a Disney vacation normally lasts at least a few days. But for those who can do it, we’re sure you won’t regret a stay there.

Fortunately, many of the perks Animal Kingdom Lodge provides can all be enjoyed if you’re staying at another Disney resort or are even off-property altogether. If you’d like to experience Animal Kingdom Lodge without those pricey room rates, you just need to get a little creative. Consider a dinner at Sanaa overlooking the savanna or the Starlight Safari. Even though both of these options are still at theme-park prices (i.e. expensive), they are much more accessible than a full stay.

Well, we hope you’ve enjoyed our overview of all there is to know about Animal Kingdom Lodge. This is an incredible resort with lots to do and see, and we highly recommend you stop out for a little resort hopping , even if it’s just for a meal and to see the animals.

Ready to go on your own African safari adventure? Why not make the most of your trip with our one-day plan for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park ? We’ll help you make the most of your time, and make sure you knock everything off your must-do list along the way. And for those of you looking to save cash on Walt Disney World tickets for the theme parks or water parks , we can help with that too!

Finally, if you’ve stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge before or are simply devotees of Boma’s soup rotation, we’d love to hear from you! What tips and tricks did we miss? How about any FAQs? We’d be happy to add it to the list.

The staff was awesome! The pools were so fun! We were looked after with affordable prices and surprised that even though we were close to Disney world and it was very busy, we were treated quite well! Yavonnie and others at the desk and pool were so helpful!!

by KathyC2083

I recently spent 3 nights here with several friends. We have nothing but positive things to say. The staff was polite and friendly. Our room was clean and always a pleasure to come back to at the end of the day. The pool was warm, clean and the entertainment was fun...including BINGO and a trivia game. The outdoor area was also a great place to spend time relaxing in the comfortable lounge chairs or just sitting by the fire pit. At night, the live music was great too. We would especially like to mention Adrianna (front desk), Mikey (27 Palms Grill) and Dornet (Zest Dining/Restaurant) who went above and beyond in making our stay one worth remembering!

The 17 best Disney World hotels for your 2024 stay

Summer Hull

Things have certainly changed since Walt Disney World opened more than 50 years ago . There used to be just a handful of hotels and one theme park. Now, you have the magic — and the challenge — of choice. There are more than 25 hotels to choose from and multiple parks to visit when you embark on a Disney vacation.

Related: The best travel credit cards

Choosing the best Disney hotel is a fun challenge, but a challenge all the same. The resorts at Walt Disney World range from those with views of live zebras and giraffes to treehouse villas and even log cabins in the woods.

When you choose a Disney World hotel, you not only stay in the "Disney bubble" but also gain access to the parks 30 minutes early each morning. Additionally, you can purchase individual Lightning Lanes for newer rides — like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Tron / Lightcycle Run — before non-resort guests, starting at 7 a.m. This means you'll have a better chance of snagging those coveted ride passes.

Still, not all Disney resorts are created equal. Fortunately, TPG is here to help sort through the best hotel options at Walt Disney World. We've tried dozens of Disney-area hotels and carefully considered the best (and less-than-stellar) features of nearly every on-property resort to bring you this list.

Whether you're looking to be treated like a fairy tale princess or a grown-up who happens to be staying near a theme park, Disney World has you covered.

Here are our top picks:

  • Best Deluxe Disney World resorts: Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge , Disney's Contemporary Resort , Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney's Wilderness Lodge
  • Best Moderate Disney World resorts: Disney's Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter , The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Gran Destino Tower at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort
  • Best Value Disney World resorts: Disney's Art of Animation Resort and Disney's Pop Century Resort
  • Best Disney World resort pools: Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort , Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort
  • Best Disney World resorts for large families: Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa , Disney's All-Star Music Resort

Best Deluxe Disney World resorts

safari hotel disney

The cream of the crop among Disney World hotels in terms of amenities, quality and price are the Deluxe resorts. These resorts have multiple on-site full-service restaurants and extensive pool areas with waterslides. Some are within walking or monorail distance of the theme parks.

All of this comes at a cost, though. Deluxe Disney resorts can range from $400 to $800 per night for a standard room. Renting Disney Vacation Club points can help bring this cost down at times, but a Deluxe resort stay will be an investment compared to the other tiers of Disney hotels.

As mentioned, Deluxe resorts are the most expensive of Disney's hotels.

While some offer luxury amenities like spas and fine dining venues, others emphasize great themes and proximity to the parks. You also get access to select parks two hours later than everyone else when staying in a Deluxe resort on eligible nights.

safari hotel disney

A true safari involves incredibly long flights and the possibility of malaria pills. For a safari-style vacation closer to home, there's Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge .

Offering an unforgettable wildlife experience within U.S. borders, Animal Kingdom Lodge is its own ecosystem away from the hustle and bustle of most of the Disney World complex.

The soaring ceilings at Jambo House are adorned with traditional decor. If you want to see giraffes, zebras, ostriches and a host of other animals, all you have to do is merely walk past the lobby's expansive windows.

Dining at this Deluxe resort is another highlight of a stay here. Boma and Jiko are excellent choices if you want to experience an authentic African meal at the resort.

Look into the nighttime Starlight Safari , which comes with loaner night vision devices, for a unique experience.

The property is an example of an excellent time to rent DVC points, especially if your family wants more space while saving money. During low seasons, rooms start at just 7 points per night, with DVC points typically available to rent from David's Vacation Club for $21 to $25 per point.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge average around $485 per night.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Contemporary Resort is another original Disney World resort from the 1971 opening. It's about as close as you can get to The Magic Kingdom without pitching a tent inside the gates (and subsequently getting kicked out by security).

It may have been built over five decades ago, but its amenities have recently been updated. The rooms now sport an incredible new look. While the theme and renovations are a big step up, the main draw of this property is undoubtedly its monorail design and Magic Kingdom-adjacent location.

We prefer tower rooms over garden-wing options as they are more centrally located to the amenities and monorail, and many offer superb views of The Magic Kingdom's nightly fireworks.

When you've worked up an appetite, you'll find a few of our favorite Disney World restaurants on-site, including Chef Mickey's. At this popular eatery, you can dine with characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. For something more upscale, there's California Grill. If you time it right, it has some of the best views of The Magic Kingdom fireworks around.

Related: The 3 best Disney World character meals you've never heard of — and how to book them

If you're ready for a splurge-level stay at the Contemporary, there is also a club level where bites and beverages from the aforementioned restaurants are included.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Contemporary Resort average around $575 per night.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is arguably the most traditional and iconic of Disney World's high-end hotels. You won't find many bright, in-your-face character themes here, but you will have access to some of Disney's most upscale amenities, including a spa and the fanciest (and priciest) restaurant at Disney.

It's one of Disney World's most expensive resorts thanks to its proximity to The Magic Kingdom, top-notch facilities, and over-the-top Christmas displays, including a gingerbread house in the lobby.

Fortunately, the Grand Floridian is undergoing a resort-wide renovation involving converting one of the hotel buildings into beautiful DVC studios. So, there's now one more reason to visit.

Dining is another highlight here. The acclaimed Victoria & Albert's experience is unparalleled, with a dress code and a no-little-kids policy to match. For an equally excellent but more affordable option, grab a cocktail or mocktail at the "Beauty and the Beast"-inspired Enchanted Rose bar on the second floor of the Grand Floridian's lobby.

Related: More rides and fewer crowds: What to expect at Disney After Hours

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa average around $750 per night.

safari hotel disney

A short drive or boat ride away from The Magic Kingdom, Disney's Wilderness Lodge is equal parts Great Wolf Lodge , Yellowstone National Park and Disney magic. There are great attractions and restaurants on-site, including a water feature that starts in the lobby and becomes a creek that feeds into one of two outdoor pools.

For a fun, reasonably priced family dining experience, try Whispering Canyon Cafe — and be aware that if you ask for ketchup, you may get a lot of ketchup. If rare Disney characters are more your jam, enjoy dinner with the Evil Queen at Story Book Dining at Artist Point .

Those who want more space and ambience than a standard hotel room should reserve one of the Copper Creek Cabins in the woods adjacent to the Wilderness Lodge or the truly spectacular two-bedroom Yosemite Suite . Both are pricey, but we promise you'll love staying in either option.

If you do opt for standard rooms (or even club-level rooms ), the good news is that Disney's Wilderness Lodge is generally one of the more affordable of the Deluxe Disney resorts. So, you can rest easy knowing you're paying a little less than average for Disney's high-end properties.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Wilderness Lodge average around $500 per night.

Best Moderate Disney World resorts

safari hotel disney

If you want a balance of price and amenities, the Moderate category of Disney resorts can be a sweet spot. At Moderate Disney resorts, there are some full-service restaurants, more on-site amenities, waterslides at the pools, and a great variety of themes and locations to choose from.

Expect rates at these hotels to range from $250 to $400 on most nights for a standard room.

safari hotel disney

One of the best Moderate resorts at Disney World is Port Orleans. We're especially partial to the French Quarter side, with its charming wrought-iron railings, bubbling fountains and an eatery serving tasty Mickey-shaped beignets.

This property is much more compact than other Moderate resorts like Disney's Coronado Springs Resort and Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. This makes everything from parking and catching a Disney bus to grabbing dinner that much easier.

It isn't the newest or fanciest option in Disney's resort portfolio, but it is a calm and lovely balance of theming and easily accessible amenities. Although you'll need a bus or car to get from this resort to any of the Disney World theme parks, you can catch the free boat to Disney Springs for shopping and dining.

In addition to the property's relaxing vibe and manageable size, the greatest asset of Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter is the price.

Rooms here are often more affordable than what you'll find at other Moderate properties, most likely because it's not connected to the theme parks by anything other than ground transportation (and Minnie Vans ).

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter average around $300 per night.

safari hotel disney

One of Disney World's lesser-known Moderate resorts is also one of its most entertaining.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort has plenty of campsites for tents and spots for recreational vehicles .

However, if you're not interested in either, The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort are an excellent choice. It gives you the best of many worlds regarding space, price and resort activities — especially if you're not planning to spend all your time at the theme parks. The cabins sleep up to six and offer a queen-size bed, a set of bunk beds and a relatively comfortable pullout sofa bed. And soon, Disney will replace the current cabins with 350 all-new cabins .

Related: How to enjoy Disney World without park tickets

Trust us, there is one essential Fort Wilderness expense you'll want to budget for — golf carts .

It costs $65 to $84 per day to rent one. However, it makes it much easier to travel to the Meadow Trading Post for snacks, the docks for transportation to The Magic Kingdom, and other parts of the 700-acre property. Lock in your golf cart reservation as far in advance as possible since they're known to sell out.

Fort Wilderness has a nonstop list of activities you probably didn't know you could do at Disney World, including pony rides, archery, fishing, and rides in wagons and horse-drawn carriages.

When the day winds down, you can also check out the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue , a lively performance full of dancing, singing and comedic moments.

Rates for standard cabins at The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Lodge average around $460 per night.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Coronado Springs Resort is the poster child of a Moderate Disney property. It's an older resort with two-story buildings spread across a large area.

Complimentary theme park transportation is limited to buses, and on-site dining venues are mostly quick-service options, given the resort's large convention clientele. Additionally, the rooms are on the smaller side, though they were recently renovated.

But one thing changed a couple of years ago that catapulted part of this property onto our favorites list: the new Gran Destino Tower .

This "hotel within a hotel" has a stunning lobby and an equally snazzy lobby bar. If you're looking for a completely different perspective, let an elevator whisk you up to the 16th floor, where the rooftop Dahlia Lounge awaits — along with an award-winning wine list. Gran Destino Tower is light on a Disney theme, but otherwise, its accommodations are on par with many Deluxe resorts.

Gran Destino is also the only Moderate option at Disney World that has a club lounge, should you prefer an exclusive space to visit and grab refreshments throughout your stay.

Rates for standard rooms at the Gran Destino Tower at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort average around $400 per night.

Best Value Disney World resorts

safari hotel disney

Value Disney resorts are the most affordable Disney World hotels.

Nightly rates start around $125 and increase to about $300 on peak dates. None of these hotels are walkable from the theme parks, but some are close to the Skyliner. Others require bus transportation.

Value Disney hotels don't have full-service restaurants or fun extras like waterslides, but they do offer grab-and-go food outlets, lively pools and colorful themes.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Art of Animation Resort is the king of Value resorts at Disney World.

The resort features bright colors and memorable Disney cartoon characters. It's also accessible from both Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios thanks to the Disney Skyliner gondola system .

Art of Animation really shines with its family suites, which provide a lot more room and have three beds in each suite (one traditional bed, one Murphy bed and a pullout sofa bed). The family suites have your choice of "The Lion King," "Cars" and "Finding Nemo" themes, while standard rooms feature decor inspired by "The Little Mermaid."

When it comes to pools, the Big Blue Pool at Art of Animation is actually the largest option available at any Disney World resort.

While the food here won't blow you away, Landscape of Flavors is a reliable cafeteria-style venue that can be a nice, easy option for families.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Art of Animation Resort average around $240 per night.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Pop Century Resort is across from Art of Animation. While it doesn't have our favorite theme (it's themed to bygone decades), it is usually the lowest-priced Disney resort that isn't one of the All-Star properties.

We generally prefer it to the All-Star resorts, as Pop Century is a stand-alone property that doesn't have to share a bus service. It's less likely to be packed with thousands of cheerleaders and children's sports groups. In addition to the included bus service to the parks, it also sits on the Skyliner route, so you can soar in a gondola to various parks and resorts.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Pop Century Resort average around $200 per night.

Best Disney World resort pools

safari hotel disney

Nothing beats an afternoon dip in your hotel's pool, so if you want to know which Disney resort hotels have the best pools, here are our top picks.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Beach Club Resort and its sister property, Disney's Yacht Club Resort , share access to Stormalong Bay, which offers top-notch poolside fun for the whole family.

Both resorts have the distinct feel of a beach in an otherwise landlocked resort thanks to sand-bottomed pools, a lazy river, a pirate ship and a wicked waterslide, among other amenities that will keep young swimmers entertained for hours.

Related: The best pools at Walt Disney World

The Yacht Club is marginally more convenient to the large pool complex, but the Beach Club is a little closer to Epcot. Choose accordingly. No matter which property you pick, don't miss the huge sundaes at Beaches & Cream Soda Shop, steps from the pool.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Yacht and Beach Clubs average around $540 per night.

safari hotel disney

Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort is one of Disney's Moderate resorts and one of the largest. Because the resort is so spread out, there are multiple pools across the property — six in total. The main Fuentes del Morro Pool is themed to resemble a Spanish fortress, with two waterslides, a zero-entry area, a 12-person hot tub and a pirate-themed splash area for kids.

The resort has a colorful island style, and some guest rooms recently received a Little Mermaid makeover. Despite the resort's size, it does offer convenient transportation options, including bus service and a Disney Skyliner station that can take you to Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

Rates at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort average around $300 per night.

One of the original Disney World resort hotels inspired by Walt Disney himself, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort sits on the monorail only a few minutes from The Magic Kingdom. Yet, it transports you to a lush Pacific island the moment you enter. It's such a great property we almost warn against staying at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort because it will set the bar pretty high for future Disney resort stays.

At "the Poly," you'll find a couple of our favorite Disney restaurants. Notably, there's Ohana — a Polynesian-inspired dining venue within the resort's main building that serves delectable noodles and a mouthwatering bread pudding — among other options on the family-style, all-you-care-to-enjoy menu.

There are plenty of activities and amenities on the grounds, such as free outdoor movies at night and a 142-foot waterslide that drops riders into the main Lava Pool (there is a secondary quiet pool, as well). There's also a large splash area with several smaller waterslides for younger guests, a zero-entry section, a separate quiet pool and a nearby stand to grab Dole Whip. The icing on the on-site Dole Whip is being able to watch The Magic Kingdom fireworks from the pool in the evenings as the perfectly timed music pipes in.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort average around $640 per night.

Best Disney World resorts for large families

safari hotel disney

Large families and groups can really rack up a bill when visiting Disney World since most on-property rooms are designed for no more than four or five people. As a result, your choices tend to be limited if you have at least five or six people in your group. Fortunately, a few resorts offer plenty of space for larger families.

Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is another DVC property, with room sizes ranging from studio suites to one-, two- and three-bedroom villas. Deluxe studio rooms have a kitchenette and a balcony or patio, and villas have separate bedrooms, a full kitchen, in-room laundry and a balcony or patio.

The resort also has multiple pools, bike rentals, tennis and basketball courts, and a Community Hall with movies, video games and daily activities like crafts and games.

In the woods behind Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa are several Treehouse Villas that sleep up to nine people. Offering three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen, these spacious accommodations can easily fit an extended family.

Rates for Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa average around $500 per night, while the Treehouse Villas average around $1,300 per night.

Best Disney World resorts for adults

safari hotel disney

We love Disney, but we're not afraid to admit that having a brief break from its intensity is sometimes nice. Luckily, a couple of options are ideal for those who want to stay near the magic without living with Mickey and his friends 24 hours a day.

safari hotel disney

Disney World's newest stand-alone hotel is easily one of the larger resort's best options for adults who want to balance a Disney trip with some less in-your-face Disney elements.

On the Disney Skyliner route, Disney's Riviera Resort offers easy access to Disney's Hollywood Studios and Epcot without placing you right in the heart of all the theme park action.

The real highlight of this easygoing property, though, is its Mediterranean vibe. The blue-and-white decor, music and cuisine will transport you to the Mediterranean coast.

You'll find all the usual Disney amenities at this Deluxe resort, but it's just a touch more refined and grown-up without being stuffy.

We're serious Riviera fans thanks in part to its design, which includes everything from "Tangled"- and "Peter Pan"-inspired mosaics to marble bathrooms that may be the nicest in all of Disney.

Don't worry if you want to bring the kids, though. There's plenty for them to enjoy, including poolside gelato, a waterslide and our favorite toddler splash area at Disney World.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's Riviera Resort average around $500 per night.

Disney's BoardWalk Inn is a DVC resort along Disney's BoardWalk in the Epcot resort area. That means you can easily walk to Epcot to eat and drink global cuisine around the World Showcase or to Disney's Hollywood Studios to fly the Millennium Falcon at Galaxy's Edge. The resort also offers water taxi and bus service around Disney World.

Related: Is a Disney annual pass worth it?

Guest rooms range from standard rooms to multi-bedroom villas, and the resort has three pools. You can splash and slide at the Luna Park Pool (or soak in the hot tub) or head for one of the quieter leisure pools.

This resort is all about location. In addition to being close to Epcot and Hollywood Studios, Disney's BoardWalk Inn is close to the dining, shopping and nightlife that line Disney's BoardWalk area. When you are done visiting the parks, you can visit Abracadabar, a magic-themed cocktail lounge, or Jellyrolls, a dueling piano bar.

Rates for standard rooms at Disney's BoardWalk Inn average around $600 per night.

Bottom line

Choosing the best resort hotel at Disney World gets easier once you identify your budget and priorities.

Do you want a great pool, more space, proximity to the parks or perhaps an immersive theme? No matter what is most important to you, you'll find a Disney property that will likely satisfy your needs.

Whether you're itching to splash around in the Stormalong Bay pool complex at Disney's Yacht Club and Beach Club resorts, stretch your budget at Disney's Pop Century Resort, retreat to a cabin at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort or get an iconic eyeful of the monorail coming through Disney's Contemporary Resort, there's a Disney resort that will have every member of your family excited to be on vacation at Walt Disney World.

Disney Has a Resort in Hawaii — and It's Just As Magical As You'd Expect

This Disney resort offers a world of magic without the theme parks.

David Roark/Disney Destinations

In August 2011, Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, opened in the resort community of Ko Olina on the southwestern shore of Oahu. As a longtime Disney fan and Travel & Leisure ’s resident theme park expert, I’ve been curious about this Hawaiian resort; after all, what would it be like to stay at a Disney resort without rushing off to theme parks each morning and seeing the fireworks every night? I found my answer during a family trip to Aulani this February.

Upon arrival, I spoke to Kama Hopkins, Aulani’s Hawaiian cultural advisor, about the relationship between Disney and Hawaiian culture, and he pointed out one fundamental commonality: “Both are storytellers. Disney is one of the most well-known storytellers there is. But for us, in Polynesia and through the Pacific, we like to say that we were people who didn’t have any written language, so we had to tell stories. We come from storytellers.”

At Aulani, storytelling is integrated into every design aspect, with thoughtfully created touchpoints for visitors to engage with Hawaiian history and culture. The resort has one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary Hawaiian art; a lounge celebrates ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi , or the Hawaiian language; and architectural details, big and small, highlight the history and modern culture.

Immediately upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted with a 360-degree mural that depicts Hawaiian history from ancient to modern times and soaring archways that mimic the design of traditional Hawaiian canoes. The layout of the entire resort is inspired by the ahupuaʻa division of land that typically stretches from the mountains to the ocean, illustrated in water features, landscaping, rock work, and design as you walk from the lobby to the beach. Programming for all ages provides more ways to engage with the local culture; I spoke to youth activities manager Kanoa Kawai, who described the host of Hawaiian language-focused crafts and activities they offered for Hawaiian Language Month (February). “At least if they learn anything, they learn about aloha. They know how to share aloha and love with their family and friends,” said Kawai.

Of course, you can find Mickey and pals (plus some rare characters typically only found at the Asian Disney parks) at character meals and meet-and-greets, Disney music, and Minnie Mouse ears throughout the property, too. Aulani is genuinely packed with fun things to do for all ages, though it’s particularly great for families with young children, and we felt that after three nights, we’d barely scratched the surface of all there is to do and see within the resort.

Here’s our review of Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii.

Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa

  • Spacious rooms and suites are perfect for families of all sizes, outfitted with all the comforts of home.
  • Character meals, meet-and-greets, pool parties, family activities, and a kids club offer Disney fun for all ages.
  • Laniwai, a Disney Spa, offers signature Hawaiian treatments and a supremely relaxing hydrotherapy garden.
  • Fan-favorite Aulani snacks, including Mickey-shaped spam musubi, shave ice, and Dole Whips, are available at dining locations throughout the resort.
  • The KA WA‘A lū‘au celebrates Hawaiian history and culture with singing, dancing, and storytelling in a lush setting.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

At Aulani, accommodations are split into two general categories: traditional hotel-style rooms and suites and Disney Vacation Club villas. Hotel-style accommodations include standard two-queen or king rooms and one- and two-bedroom suites. Most of the resort’s accommodations are Disney Vacation Club villas, but don’t worry — you don’t have to be a member to book these rooms (more on that membership program below). One-, two-, and three-bedroom villas include separate bedrooms, full kitchens and dining areas, and a washer and dryer for home-like conveniences, while deluxe studios offer a more traditional hotel feel. We stayed in a one-bedroom villa, and we loved having more than 750 square feet to spread out, a full-size fridge to keep leftovers and snacks in, and a washer and dryer to do some laundry.

No matter what type of room you stay in, you can expect thoughtful, island-inspired designs with natural materials and Hawaiian art and decor. Like the rest of the property, you can find adorable Disney touches throughout the rooms — like a wooden ukelele-playing Mickey lamp — but the design focuses primarily on Hawaiian influences and the natural beauty of the area rather than the cartoon characters you’d find at many Disney theme park hotels. I highly recommend booking an oceanview room with a balcony (request a high floor if you can!) to enjoy the gorgeous nightly sunsets from your room.

Aulani’s dining experiences range from multi-course dinners with sunset ocean views to quick-service Hawaiian poke. And Disney parks fans, take note: you can get the ever-popular Mickey waffles for breakfast at multiple locations, too. AMA‘AMA is an upscale open-air restaurant with a thatched roof and stunning sunset views, offering a four-course prix-fixe dinner featuring Hawaiian flavors and local ingredients. An optional wine pairing is also available. Makahiki is a lively restaurant themed to the Hawaiian celebration of the harvest, and it serves daily character breakfast with a prix-fixe menu featuring tasty dishes, including malasadas (Portuguese sugar donuts), kālua pig omelets, and pancakes with macadamia nut-vanilla sauce.

For dinner (sans characters), guests can pick from fresh salads, steaks, pasta, seafood, and more during a prix-fixe three-course meal. For a more casual dining experience, guests can stop by Off the Hook for breakfast, lunch, or dinner; I loved the ahi poke and crab cake BLT for a tasty poolside bite. The ‘Ōlelo Room serves up coffee and malasadas in the morning and transitions to a cocktail and sushi bar by night in a space that celebrates the Hawaiian language.

Ulu Cafe is a fast-casual spot for all-day dining and snacks; it’s the perfect spot to grab an acai bowl for breakfast, a poke bowl for lunch (I had both the classic and spicy tuna bowls multiple times, and they were delicious), and other grab-and-go items throughout the day. Ulu Cafe is also where you’ll find one of Aulani’s most sought-after snacks: the Mickey-shaped spam musubi. These sell out quickly, so grab one when you see it if you want to try one of the resort’s most popular snacks. (They even make Mickey musubi merch, available at the hotel’s gift shop.) Mama’s Snack Stop is another quick service stand serving classic poolside eats like chicken tenders and coconut shrimp.

And you can’t visit Aulani without getting the iconic Mickey-shaped shave ice from Pāpālua Shave Ice or a fresh fruit Dole Whip sundae with watermelon or pineapple from Little ‘Opihi's by the beach.

All these delicious things considered, the resort’s best dining experience isn’t found at a restaurant. The KA WA‘A lū‘au is a must-do when you visit Aulani. The three-hour experience includes pre-show demonstrations, where you can learn about taro pounding, ukulele playing, traditional tattoos, and more, followed by a buffet dinner featuring tasty seafood, prime rib, and plenty of macaroni salad. The lū‘au performance is truly incredible, with singing, dancing, and storytelling all about Hawaiian culture and history. While Mickey and Minnie make an appearance, the lū‘au is centered around the incredible beauty of the culture and the people.

As a Disney resort, Aulani offers a slate of character-centric activities for all ages. Character meet-and-greets allow guests to snap photos with favorites like Mickey, Minnie, Moana, Stitch, and the much rarer Duffy and friends, typically only found at the Disney theme parks in Asia.

Guests can make their own floral ears (for a fee), shop for Aulani-exclusive Disney merchandise, and splash around during pool parties with characters like Goofy and Max. The resort has several pools, ranging from infinity-edge grotto pools overlooking the ocean to zero-entry family-friendly pools and a water play structure that little ones will love. The massive pool complex also has two larger waterslides, a lazy river, and adults-only hot tubs. Of course, there’s also the beautiful, protected beach and lagoon with complimentary loungers; guests can also paddleboard out on the water for an additional fee.

The Rainbow Reef is another must-do when you visit; the human-made saltwater lagoon is home to around 1,000 vibrant fish, so it’s the perfect spot for even first-time snorkelers to check out the colorful marine life below the surface. You can purchase single-day or entire vacation passes or even book a scuba diving or fish-feeding experience in the reef.

You can also book excursions that depart from the resort; we booked the sailing canoe experience with Hawaiian Ocean Adventures. It leaves right from the Aulani beach, and it was a beautiful way to explore part of the coastline while learning more about Hawaiian culture and nature from the fantastic guides. End the day with storytelling around the fire pit or stargazing to learn how Hawaiians used the night sky for navigation.

Throughout your stay, check out the Aulani app to see what free activities are available each day; you’ll also see which require a fee and how much they cost.

I’ve visited some exceptional spas throughout my travels, but I didn’t expect to find one of the best at a Disney resort.

The Laniwai ritual begins the moment you enter the spa; before you’re shown to the relaxation areas, you select a stone at random from a bucket, and on it, you’ll find a word (mine was “balance”) in both English and Hawaiian that can inspire your time at the spa. After dropping your stone into an indoor reflection pond, you continue into the relaxation areas (dressing rooms and some amenities are separated by gender, but the hydrotherapy garden is co-ed).

Even though you’re just steps from the waterslides and lazy river, Laniwai feels worlds apart, offering a range of body and facial treatments — including signature Hawaiian massages — in a serene setting. Apart from my fantastic lomilomi massage, the outdoor hydrotherapy garden was my favorite part of the experience, and I could have spent hours hopping between the cold plunge and hot tub, walking along the reflexology path, relaxing in the soaking pools, and testing each of the six rain-style showers. And the relaxation doesn’t have to end when your treatment is over; at checkout, I received a sachet of balance-inspired bath salts so I could take my experience with me (back to my room, where I used them to soak in the giant bathtub later in the trip).

Aulani is packed with family-friendly activities and that inimitable Disney magic that all ages love, making it an excellent destination for small and large families. Several pools, an interactive water play area, two giant water slides, a lazy river, and a private saltwater snorkeling lagoon provide plenty of fun spots to splash around before even reaching the protected beach with crystal-clear water and minimal waves. Where else can kids (and kids-at-heart) grab a Stitch or Moana Dole Whip and dip their toes in the pristine ocean before hanging out with Goofy during a pool party? And, of course, character meals, meet-and-greets, storytelling, and other daily activities provide plenty of fun for the whole crew.

Little ones ages four to 12 can also hang out at Aunty’s Beach House, a supervised kids club with engaging activities. While many activities are free, premium experiences (including some that include beloved characters like Moana) require an extra charge. Pre-registration and reservations for Aunty’s Beach House can be found on the  Aulani website .

Disney’s theme parks and resorts are accessible to guests with various abilities, and Aulani is no exception. The property is ADA-compliant with accessible rooms and features, including complimentary beach wheelchairs (available on a first-come, first-served basis) and pool access via pool lifts and zero-entry pool areas. Rainbow Reef has a pool lift, so guests who need it can also enjoy this serene snorkeling experience and spot the colorful marine life up close. Sign language interpretation is available by request for the lū‘au.

Aulani is located in Ko Olina , a resort community on the southwestern shore of Oahu. The resort shares a lagoon and beach area with the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina, and it’s close to the Ko Olina Golf Club’s 18-hole course. Aulani is about 30 minutes away from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) by car; rideshare services like Lyft and shuttle and taxi services are available. If you plan to explore the surrounding area, you could rent a car or plan excursions including transportation to and from the hotel. Parking is available for $40 per day, though Disney Vacation Club members receive complimentary self-parking for up to two vehicles.

As mentioned above, Aulani is a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) property. Rather than a traditional timeshare model, DVC allows members to book vacations at any of the 16 DVC properties (including Disney World and Disneyland hotels ), sail with Disney Cruise Line, or travel with Adventures by Disney using a points-based system. Members can check the points calendars to determine the best time to visit and maximize their points. Of course, you don’t have to be a member to book a room (traditional guest room or villa) at any DVC resort, including Aulani. DVC members can enjoy exclusive perks during their Aulani stay, including free parking, discounts, and activities.

Be sure to check out the offers available on the Aulani website to find limited-time deals before you book. Recent offerings have included up 30 percent off extended stays in the spring and fall, up to 30 off select stays for eligible members of the U.S. military, and up to 35 off for Disney Visa cardholders.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream,” an immersive spectacle by former Walt Disney Imagineers and African artisans celebrating the groundbreaking English primatologist and environmental activist, is taking form in a cultural complex in Tanzania.

Its debut, in the safari gateway of Arusha, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park , is planned around World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2025 — 65 years since Goodall, then a 26-year-old novice researcher chaperoned by her mother, landed at the Gombe forest reserve to begin her field work for the anthropologist Louis Leakey .

Within months she upended scientific doctrine by observing an adult male chimp she called David Greybeard raid a termite mound, stripping leaves from a hollow branch to extract and eat the insects. The making and using of tools was long thought a hallmark of humans.

Since then, the nonstop Goodall, who turned 90 on April 3 during a typically exhausting American tour, has been lionized (or aped) in books and movies. She’s a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And champion of a global crusade of young people and celebrities from Prince Harry to Leonardo DiCaprio fighting deforestation, climate change, pollution and factory farming.

Her nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute in the U.S. is projected to raise $30 million this year, with additional millions raised by the other 25 chapters worldwide, a spokesman said. Her youth movement, Roots and Shoots, is operating in 70 countries.

But she has never been presented like this — in an immersive tribute by African artists and Disney veterans. Disney has called Imagineering the “blending of creative imagination with technical know-how.” But “Dr. Jane’s Dream” is not a Disney project; rather, it taps into storytelling techniques by some of its former innovators.

At “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” Goodall said in New York last week, “There’s a tent where my mom and I were and two little peepholes looking out into the world of the chimps.” Visitors will be challenged. “They go into this dream world and are going to have to investigate. It’s like an adventure.”

Goodall is now on one of her globe-circling jaunts that keep her on the road some 300 days a year. She flew in from the West Coast at the end of March and after Canada and a few days back home in her native Bournemouth on the English Channel, she is booked to Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia.

Since Jan. 12, she calculated, she has slept in her own bed five nights.

On April 2, Goodall was on East 54th Street at the Hotel Elysée with its Monkey Bar — a coincidence, she insisted — along with the fact that her top floor suite had been the last abode of the playwright Tennessee Williams, who died there in 1983 at 71, choking on the cap of a bottle of barbiturates.

Her latest project, “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” is unfolding at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, opened in 1994 by Saifudin Khanbhai, whose great-grandfather from India established a trading outpost in British colonial Tanganyika in the 1800s.

Khanbhai offered Goodall a location on the five-acre heritage site, amid a complex of half a dozen buildings and four huts displaying the work of some 3,000 artists and jewelers and showcasing the region’s unique blue gemstone, Tanzanite.

“We just connected so well,” Khanbhai said in an interview. “I’m a man of chemistry. If it works it works.”

Her building’s shell of round drumlike forms is already up, with the interior exhibits coming over the next year.

“Basically, she is getting the deep storytelling, design and immersiveness of Disney Imagineering because — well, we adore Jane,” said Tom Acomb, an architect with his own firm, AOA, and a former Imagineer who teamed up with colleagues including Joe Rohde , creator of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars of free design services for “Dr. Jane’s Dream.”

But Acomb said, “Disney has nothing to do with the project, nor is any technology of theirs deployed in any way. What is in the mix is a process — the process that was unique to Disney Imagineering’s ability to tell a story.” He said they still did support work for Disney when called upon.

The idea, Rohde explained, was to create “much more of an experience center than an expository center.”

“What we’re trying to do,” he added, “is sort of take all the feelings and emotions that made Jane Goodall Jane Goodall and transfer that into a series of objects and encounters.”

It was not so much “about” Goodall, he noted, as “feeling her.”

He said it would feature a kiosk with a recording of Goodall translating chimp cries into English; a ceiling of 800 leaflike tiles painted by various African artists, models of animals wrapped in information about them (requiring close study by visitors, just as Goodall had to closely study her subjects); and elaborately carved and painted tree trunks in a style of artmaking called Makonde .

And, of course, the famous termite mound.

“Rather than just telling people that this is the way chimps fish for food,” Rohde said, “we want to compel people to do something like what the chimps do — use these little probes to stimulate something within the termite mound. You’re not learning about what chimps do — you’re learning what they do.

“It’s a very Jane Goodall thing.”

To keep “Dr. Jane’s Dream" maintainable locally, it will limit fancy technology, and allow for improvisation, Rohde said.

“It’s going to be what it becomes as the artists make it.”

Born in London in 1934, Goodall grew up cherishing animals, even, as a not-yet-2-year-old, taking earthworms to bed with her. Her mother, Vanne, convinced her that the worms would do better in the ground. At 4½ she lost herself in the henhouse trying to figure out where eggs came from.

Her parents separated when she was little and, amid Nazi bombings, she relocated with her mother and younger sister to her grandmother’s home in Bournemouth. The first book she read was “The Story of Dr. Dolittle,” about a country physician who talks to the animals. Another early book, “Tarzan of the Apes” left her jealous, she remembers: “He marries the wrong Jane.”

Set on visiting Africa, Goodall saved her waitressing money and, at 23 in 1957, sailed to Kenya where, though lacking a college degree, she sought out Leakey who with his wife, Mary, was excavating early human fossils in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

One day at the site, out walking with another assistant, Gillian Trace, and the Leakeys’ two protective Dalmatians, Toots and Bottom-Biter, Goodall noticed they were being trailed by a young male lion. The dogs, off leash, were busy chasing a mouse.

“Gillian wanted to hide in the vegetation at the bottom of the gorge,” she recalled last week. “I said no, the lion would know where we are, we won’t know where the lion is. We have to climb up on the plains so the lion could see us. I had this firm belief that animals wouldn’t hurt us if we are not a threat to them.”

Goodall said she was less worried about the lion than coming back to Mary Leakey without the Dalmatians.

Afterward, Louis Leakey, impressed, offered her a job studying chimpanzees for clues to man’s earliest ancestors. She became one of his three ape mentees, “the trimates,” who also included Dian Fossey on gorillas and Birutė Galdikas on orangutans. Fossey would be murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Goodall returned to England but sailed back to Africa with her mother in 1960 to begin her research in Gombe, on Lake Tanganyika.

Alone in the jungle with only their cook, both were felled by malaria. Her mother nearly died. “We just lay in our beds and handed the thermometer back and forth,” Goodall recalled. Somehow, without quinine, they recovered.

She tried repeatedly to make contact with the chimps but they remained aloof, as recorded by an old movie camera she propped up in a tree fork.

Until, after nearly four months, David Greybeard let her get close enough as he made his tool of the tree branch.

“It was held in the left hand, poked into the ground, and then removed coated with termites,” she recorded in her field book. “The straw was then raised to the mouth and the insects picked off with the lips, along the length of the straw, starting in the middle.”

Goodall said she knew immediately that her breakthrough would thrill Leakey. He cabled back: “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as human.”

But Goodall also observed the primates in warfare and cannibalism — along with manifestations of empathy and communal rearing of offspring orphaned by poachers. At a waterfall, she observed chimps dancing as if in religious awe.

Sergio Almécija , senior research scientist in primates and human evolution at the American Museum of Natural History, said Goodall revolutionized the way we understand primates and other animals — “like the transition from radio to color TV.”

Starting in 1961, Goodall returned periodically to Cambridge for what became four years of doctoral studies in ethology. “I was told you must focus on feeding behavior or maternal behavior, but not everything,” she recalled.

She focused on everything. She also rejected complaints that she was giving names, not just numbers, to her chimp subjects and recognizing their humanlike traits.

When National Geographic sent a renowned Dutch wildlife photographer, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to Gombe in 1962 to document an irresistible story — a young Englishwoman among the apes — a romance blossomed. They married in London in 1964 and had a child, Hugo Eric Louis, nicknamed Grub. (Now a house builder in Africa and Latin America, he has two sons and a daughter, Goodall’s grandchildren, who work on some of her projects.)

A slowdown in assignments sent van Lawick in search of work in the Serengeti and he and Goodall divorced in 1974. A year later she married the Tanzanian national parks director, Derek Bryceson . He died of cancer in 1980, when Goodall was 46.

In 1986, she helped organize a conference in Chicago, and was shocked to learn how deforestation and pollution were decimating animal populations.

“I went to the conference as a scientist and I left as an activist,” she said.

After revelations of terrible conditions at the Brazzaville zoo in the Republic of Congo, she persuaded the American oil company Conoco to help build a chimp sanctuary in that country. She convinced leading research laboratories like Harvard’s that chimps, after all, made poor models for medical experimentation to benefit humans. Many long-captive animals were released to sanctuaries (though ape-trafficking remained rampant).

She widened her focus to human behavior as well, and became a vegan. “How can we even save the precious chimpanzees,” she asked, “when people all around are struggling to survive?”

Some of her favorite stuffed animals that she carries around in her hand luggage sat last week on a mantle in her New York hotel room: Mr. H, a monkey from a blinded United States Marine, Gary Haun, who became a proficient magician, skier and sky diver; Pigcasso, a South African pig taught to create artworks with a paintbrush in her mouth; an octopus from the movie “My Octopus Teacher”; and Rattie, an African pouched rat trained to detect land mines.

Two other items were away on display at a National Geographic Museum traveling exhibition called “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” — a piece of the Berlin Wall and a limestone rock from Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison.

All symbols, Goodall says, of her mantra — hope.

“I’m seeing humanity as at the mouth of a very long dark tunnel,” she said, “and right at the end is a little star — that’s hope. But in order to get there we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and climb under and crawl over all the obstacles that lie in the path, like climate change, and loss of biodiversity. And a very important one is poverty. We must alleviate poverty because really poor people destroy the environment to survive.”

In her hotel suite, the living room lights and brass chandelier were lit. A photo of Tennessee Williams glistened in a vitrine.

Goodall was in a bedroom, resting her eyes from her travels and lectures into the spotlights. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the chandelier began to sway.

Goodall didn’t seem surprised to hear of it. Once, she said, staying in another suite on the same floor, she had seen an apparition.

Did she believe in a hereafter?

There’s either nothing or there’s something, she said. Finding out the answer would be “the next great adventure.”
