GET THE SAFARI SCOOP!
GET TO KNOW US
Safari Niagara’s vision is to provide people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to meet animals and birds up close. It is hoped that such interaction with nature will inspire future conservationists and naturalists. In a world where children experience fewer exchanges with nature, Safari Niagara provides an unprecedented opportunity for kids to view, experience and learn about many animal and bird species that share our planet while engaging in a fun and rewarding adventure.
Safari Niagara, a 150-acre, privately-owned and operated nature park, is home to more than 1000 animals of native and exotic mammals, reptiles and birds.
Building Safari Niagara
The seed for Safari Niagara was planted by the late Stephen J. Tykolis, who moved his family of seven children to Stevensville from Welland in the 1950s.
Upon retirement in 1990 from his family businesses, Stevensville Lawn Service and Stevensville Garden Gallery, “Papa Steve” began a small hobby farm of domestic animals, which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
After his death in 1992, three of Papa Steve’s children, Terry, Marianne and Tim, were left in charge of business operations and, as a tribute to their dad, constructed a small-scale public zoo of the cherished feathered and furry friends inside the garden centre. Visitors loved seeing the animals and birds up close, which inspired the acquisition of more species, including more exotic species such as primates and reptiles. The little zoo also became somewhat of a sanctuary for exotic species whose owners could no longer care for them. In seeing the interest and excitement the little zoo was creating, it wasn’t long before a hobby farm of larger animals began inhabiting the parcel of land behind the garden centre.
The population and variety of animals “out back” slowly grew into a full-fledged zoological facility, which remained private while the Tykolis family worked with a professional development team to create a master plan for the facility to be constructed in phases. The first phase was completed and culminated in the grand opening of “ZOOZ” on May 18, 2002.
The year 2009 marked the beginning of a new era for the facility as it evolved into “Safari Niagara”. It was a new dawn of opportunities for future expansion, which has included more educational exhibits, updated and new animal environments, new exciting activities, and amenities, including food and concessions.Safari Niagara has been and will continue to be a wonderful destination for children of all ages and abilities to get “up close” to more than 1000 animal species while enjoying time outdoors with family and friends. The park is completely interactive with free educational animal shows & tours , animal feedings, Papa Steve’s Family Farm and numerous activities .
Visitors of all ages and abilities can experience the park’s inhabitants on their own or through:
- Free, educational shows and presentations
- Educational, narrated tram rides/tours
- Interactive, educational demonstrations including: Wonders of Flight, Interactive Reptile Show, Hippo and Giraffe Encounter, Rhino Talk and Zooniversity
- Papa Steve’s Family Farm
- Behind the Scenes Tours

- Outdoor amphitheatre that is host to live concerts and events.

- Retail Gift Shop
GOOD OLD DAYS
Born in Pine River, Manitoba in 1920, Stephen J. Tykolis came to Niagara when he was 17 years old. He married Yolande and moved with his seven children to Stevensville in 1955. Mr. Tykolis was an entrepreneur and worked hard to achieve his dreams. With the help of his family he built a successful landscaping business, Stevensville Lawn Service, and greenhouse and retail operation, Stevensville Garden Gallery. He loved his community and the people in it. His philosophy in life, according to his children was “everything is achievable if you worked hard enough”. In retirement Mr. Tykolis didn’t go fishing, he honed his love for animals. He started a private hobby farm for his personal enjoyment. Soon he discovered that family and friends shared his love and curiosity of animals.
NEXT GENERATION
Mr. Tykolis passed away in December of 1992 at the age of 72, however his legacy lives on through his children in the form of Safari Niagara. In memory of their father, his children, Terry, Tim and Marianne, developed his hobby farm into a small petting zoo and eventually the full-scale animal adventure known today as Safari Niagara. The park is dedicated to his passion for sharing the wonders of wildlife while providing a learning and fun experience for all ages and abilities.

At Safari Niagara we strive to educate people of all ages and abilities about wildlife conservation.
Our Mission Statement
By uniting people with animal and plant life and sharing our commitments to conservation, education and sustainability we empower advocates of change to transform behaviors and strengthen our earth’s biodiversity.
A little More Information
A visit to Safari Niagara may spark a flame for future conservationists and naturalists. Providing the platform for a one-to-one connection with nature can inspire any individual, especially a child. In a world where children experience fewer exchanges with nature, Safari Niagara provides an unprecedented opportunity for kids of all ages and abilities to view, interact with and learn about the different species that share our planet, all while engaging in a fun and rewarding outdoor adventure!
The Tykolis family began operating its first business in 1967. Over the years, innovative thinking and careful investment developed into an entirely new and industry distinct business, Safari Niagara. In memory of their late father’s love for animals and after more than 10 years of planning and development, a once flat, clay tract of land in rural Stevensville has been carefully converted to green space complete with hills, trees and lakes. Since opening, Safari Niagara has become known in Niagara as one of the area’s best and safest places for families, students and corporate groups to experience nature together.
Business Excellence Award
Whatever awards won, the ultimate success of Safari Niagara comes with the impact it has on its visitors. It is assumed that over the past seasons of operation at least one person has entered the park unaware of the importance of nature and preserving the environment. It is safe to say that after spending the day at Safari Niagara, that person left the park with a new perspective on the unique relationship he or she has with our planet and how vital it is to respect it completely.

How does nobody in the Buffalo area know about this place? with no backups on the bridge, I can get here within 30 minutes. With crappy traffic, it takes me that long to get to the (horrendous) Buffalo Zoo. Yes, this is a ZOO, not a "safari" if you're used to African Lion Safari. Is it as great as other zoos we've been to throughout the US? No. **but** this place blows the Buffalo Zoo RIGHT out of the water. We visited for the 1st time last year and loved it so much we got season passes for this year. It's humongous, has a ton of different animals, and has a ton of awesome activities for kids. Between the splash pad, playground, giant sandbox with toys, jumping pillows, and ropes course, my kid could spend an entire day here and not even GLANCE at the animals all around! and, hello, you get to FEED GIRAFFES here. So awesome. And feeding the budgies is so fun too (tip: visit the budgie house FIRST on your visit - the later in the day you go, the more their bellies are full and they're less inclined to nibble). ~ You can bring in your own food and beverage, which is a huge bonus for families. But the food they had for sale there wasn't ridiculously overpriced. ~ Even their gift shop wasn't horribly priced, especially when you consider it's in Canadian prices. (we got a stuffed medium size lion for $7.99. super reasonable) ~ Free parking unllke the Buffalo Zoo. ~ Guests of Safari Niagara tend to be pleasant, friendly, and better behaved than many of the folks frequenting the Buffalo Zoo. My only complaint is about the "life guards" at the splash pad. I don't know if the standards are different for American vs. Canadian life guards, but the two teens/early 20 folks that were supposed to be watching children play in the crowded splash pad were more interested in giggling, chatting, looking at each other, and socializing than actually watching the children in the water. And, yes, the water IS deep enough for a child to drown in if they were face down. American lifeguards are STRONGLY taught not to engage in conversations while watching the pool, they march back and forth around the perimeter, do regular visual sweeps, etc.... I saw NONE of this and I observed them for a steady 15 minutes (while my mother kept an eye on my kiddo in the water). Shame. Yes, parents should watch their children for safety- but what's the point of paying two employees to "guard" the pool if they're just going to have social happy hour instead???? Oh, and signage can be a LOT better here. You can get turned around easily sometimes. TIP: There are often Groupons and Travelzoo offers for this place! As of writing this review, both have a deal for admission!

Took the trek up to Canada to this fun Safari themed Zoo and I can honestly say even though I didn't have kids in tow, I had a fun time. Enclosures are clean and spacious, animals were active and healthy! My favorite was the hippo exhibit. We watched the two hippos during their feeding time and the zoologist was very knowledgeable about their mannerisms and stats. The male hippo weighed 4000 lbs. There is a tram you can take to various exhibits throughout the park. It was also probably the cleanest zoo I have ever been to! There are also other kids activities (most included in the cost) as well as free parking and picnic tables so you can save money and pack a lunch! I'll be back for maybe one of their special event nights like Boo in the Zoo!

Safari Niagara is a place that I wish I ventured too many years ago. This Zoo is located only a few minutes into Fort Erie and is a pretty wonderful place to go and spend a day. I got here a short time after they opened on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favourite animals being the first thing you see, the lovely little red pandas (seriously, if these guys don't make you smile you are probably evil). This zoo is pretty massive and has a ton of different areas to check out including a full obstacle course, water park, go-karts, tons of food stations (most seem to be closed this time of year), a trolly that rolls through the entire park, and of course, tons of animals! From Lions, Tigers, rhinos, hippos, bald eagles, and bison to grizzly bears, hyenas, giraffes, reindeer, and zebra....oh, and if you here a super loud screaming noise the entire time you are there and don't know what it is, then you haven't met the gibbons yet. The gibbons gave a special section of the park just for them and they are the cutest monkeys that pretty much scream the entire day, so be prepared for that! Is this the best zoo I've ever been too? No, but this is a pretty awesome zoo in the middle of nowhere Southern Ontario. If you like animals, walking, and screaming monkeys, then this might just be the place for you!
Best animal exhibit I've ever been to! So many exotic animals to see, and although it's a safari "zoo," they give lots of space for animals to run around and not in cramped cages. This place is primarily outdoors so be prepared. Parking is free! There's a tram system they have that runs every 10 minutes at each station so you can hop on and off when you're done in an area. Very convenient and you don't sit waiting forever for one to come unless it's a full tram. There is so much to see, you could spend an entire day there. BRING BUG SPRAY! I went after it rained a day before, and there were SO many mosquitoes especially in the woodsy part of the park where the monkeys, leopards (jaguars? One of the big cats), and wolves were located. Overall, the Niagara Safari brings you really close to animals. They have food trucks spread across the park and ice cream vending machines. There are also scheduled events on the brochure they give you and lots of activities to keep kids busy. This is a really good place to visit and honestly worth the money because how big it is and the large variety of animals that are there.
The family had fun, didn't have the chance to explore the whole grounds of the zoo because it was just that huge. Great pathway: huge to walk and social distance well.. the zoo looks well maintained. Just the park areas need some cleaning for extra fun. Other than that, we would definitely come back again
I had been wanting to visit this place for a while and was glad I went on customer appreciation day which was only a $10.00 fee per person. I would have been rather upset if I would have had to play full price! I thought it was very confusing walking around through the woods , nothing was clearly labeled , lots of animals were sleeping and the other half you couldn't even get to , something to do on a nice Saturday is the best I can say about this place.... the best part seemed to be the children's play areas but the lines were so long .
Overall, we had a good time here, and I think this is a good spot for little kids. Obviously not the size of Toronto Zoo, but there were a decent amount of animals. There is one big play area, but there are also playgrounds throughout the place, which I think is a great idea. One can just take the time to go through the zoo and stop at different spots for a break. The entrance/ticket area needs improvement. The way the line up and booth is set up, it becomes very inconsistent. So, you can line up before me, but I can end up getting tickets before you type of deal. We were there at open, so there was someone directing people where to go and fill lines, but I hope they do that all day. The big issue for me was the Tram ride, as there is no order of any kind. You can sit there and wait for the Tram, and when the Tram gets here, people will come from all over and jump over you to get on. Had we known how it was, we would have went for the Tram ride at the beginning, as there weren't many people there yet. Lots of people want to get on, but not many gets off. This is at every stop. You basically have to be prepared to fight for space. Going with little kids or anyone who might have problems walking, be aware! We went a couple weeks ago, so it wasn't even the hottest or busiest day, and there were plenty of people disappointed and frustrated at the situation. I don't think it would be very hard or cost much money if they put up some kind of line up system at each stop. I feel this is very necessary.
It's probably best with children. There is a huge variety of animals, some in unpleasantly small wire cages, some in larger enclosures where they can roam a bit, and a few (chickens, peacocks) roaming free. Children can feed many of the animals, like goats and giraffes. Come early when the animals are still interested in food. There are different presentations by staff members to make the experience somewhat educational for older kids and adults (but boring for the very young). There are also informative placards, if you're into that sort of thing. If you're younger, there's a big splash pad ( there's a changing room if you're over two) with fun fountains and activities, paddle boats, a fishing pond, a place to bounce, and several playgrounds--nice ways to break up the day for young kids. All included in the one price. There are places to purchase food and drinks, or bring your own lunch, snacks, and beverages. You can rent a wagon, if you want to haul your stuff or your kids. There is also a free train that makes the rounds when you or your kids get tired, but it may be full ( people bring strollers and wagons on it) and you may have to wait a while. If you want to really see the animals, you need to walk quite a bit and spend time with your favorites or the ones that are most active. All in all, it makes for a nice day or half day. Be aware that some animals are nocturnal; like people, most animals like to laze around in the shade or go indoors (where you can't see them) in hot weather; and the grazers spend most of the day grazing.
This place has the potential to receive five stars, however there are a few things I disliked. There are plenty of diverse animals in this safari, from tigers, lions, various birds, rhinos, giraffes, moose, bears, monkeys, and many more. You are able to feed the monkeys, giraffes and sheep. That I found was interesting and different then the traditional parks. Do not buy the tram ticket unless you are incapable of walking, it is a waste of money. They strictly stop to pick up people in designated areas and they do not come around much. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and studying the map and cutting through taking short cuts around. Screw that damn tram operating lady, she was annoying. If you are able to come come during the weekends. There are much more shows and live exhibits, unlike the weekdays. Overall, it is a fun and nice experience.

Was a nice place but definitely not much shade. My little sister enjoyed it a lot. It was a little hard finding the carousel as it was in a weird place off to the side of the park. Bring a bathing suit if you have young children because there's a splash park.
