Cute Baby Rhino Alert!
Sound the (rhino) horns! Safari West is overjoyed to announce the birth of our first-ever Southern white rhino baby born to mother, Eesha, and father, Ongava.
The calf was born on Sunday, April 2nd at 5:30 pm PST. We feel fortunate and honored to contribute to the growth of global rhino populations and aid in conserving this magnificent protected species.
Our extraordinary animal care staff report the bouncing baby rhino calf is strong, nursing, and is bonding well with Mom. Safari West Veterinarian Dr. Emily Cehrs estimates the baby weighs around 100 pounds. We have not named the new baby yet!
This is a momentous event for us as the calf is the first of its species to be born at Safari West, Needless to say, it is a big deal to Eesha as well! She immediately showed good mothering instincts and has been attentive to her calf.

The story of this remarkable baby calf birth started in the summer of 2008 when Eesha arrived at Safari West. Over the last 15 years, Eesha has been a living reminder to tens of thousands of excited visitors of the plight rhinos face in the wild, and the amazing organizations working to sustain and grow rhino populations. For years we hoped Eesha might contribute to the growth of rhino populations herself, but she never showed much breeding interest in the male rhinos at Safari West.
All that changed in 2021 when Eesha was introduced to a new male named Ongava. Yes, she finally met her Mr. Rhino-right! They instantly were smitten with each other, displaying the assertive behaviors often seen in rhino courtship. Sure enough, throughout 2022, we started seeing increasing signs of pregnancy.
With a 16 – 18 months gestation, patience was critical while waiting for the baby rhino to arrive. In these last few days before birth, our rhino care team took turns staying overnight to ensure Eesha and the baby would have support, no matter when the calf was born.
Current Southern White Rhino Research by Erika Defer
- Rhino Research
Part of our responsibility of housing animals under human care is to expand our knowledge of these animals to continuously improve their well-being, especially for a keystone species such as the southern white rhinoceros. One of the major ways we accomplish this is through scientific research. Safari West has a research committee comprised of members with wide-ranging backgrounds, each with their own set of expertise. Through this committee we are able to participate in a variety of research projects that allow us to advance scientific knowledge in zoological facilities, improve the well-being of the animals in our collection, and provide a better understanding of native wildlife that lives on the Safari West property.
Safari West is participating in a collaborative research project conducted through the American Institute of Rhinoceros Science (AIRS), an organization led by expert rhino scientists. With this research project, AIRS aims to advance the science of rhino husbandry through nationwide participation. Safari West is proud to be able to contribute to this research that is investigating physical fitness, reproduction and well-being. Through positive reinforcement training, both of our rhinos, Eesha and Ongava, have voluntarily participated in blood draws, wearing anklet activity trackers and providing heart rate, bioimpedance and morphometric measurements. We started our involvement in this collaborative research before we had confirmation of Eesha’s pregnancy. Southern white rhinos can be challenging to successfully breed under human care, especially if the herd size is small, as is the situation we have at Safari West with just one male and one female. Due to the success of their breeding, the data provided will be much more informative to the well-being of southern white rhinos under human care.
In addition, Safari West is conducting our own, internally driven, research project related to behavior and reproduction utilizing thermographic imaging. We have anecdotally seen evidence that supports the ability to detect and monitor pregnancy in our female southern white rhinoceros by monitoring changes in heat signatures through the use of thermography. We are able to utilize the test results from voluntary blood draws and data from behavioral observations to support the changes we are seeing in the thermographic images. The use of this technology could translate to research done in situ, as it allows for non-invasive data collection. We plan to continue this research project after Eesha has her calf, to ascertain the use of thermographic imaging to monitor estrus cycles in southern white rhinos and, hopefully, repeat the research if Eesha successfully breeds again!
Rhinos are an integral part of Safari West’s mission of conservation education, and we hope that the news of this beautiful calf will help raise awareness of the fight to protect rhinos worldwide. White rhinos, the species at Safari West, are currently classified as “Near Threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN), meaning their survival is threatened due to habitat loss and illegal poaching of their horns.
Eesha’s pregnancy included ‘weekly ultrasounds and blood hormone monitoring,’ while Dr. Cehrs and our animal care team trained with her in preparation for the regular checkups, so she was able to participate in her own care by patiently standing for the ultrasounds. And those “birthing classes” paid off! Mom and baby are doing great.

Historic Birth: Safari West Welcomes a Southern White Baby Rhino
The adorable newborn displayed some sweet spirit just a day after its much-anticipated arrival., by alysia gray painter • published april 3, 2023 • updated on april 6, 2023 at 5:00 pm, what to know.
- The Southern white rhino was born on April 2, 2023 at Safari West; the newborn weighs around 100 pounds, it is estimated
- The little one's parents are Eesha and Ongava; this is the first Southern white rhino born at the Santa Rosa sanctuary
- Update: An April 6 announcement revealed that the baby is a boy
SAFARI WEST... has become synonymous with spectacular animals, from the sanctuary's comical Ring-Tailed Lemurs to the ultra-cute Fennec Foxes to those marvelous Masai Giraffes. But the Santa Rosa animal park had never had a Southern white rhino born on the grounds, a dream for the many keepers, volunteers, and supporters who work tirelessly on behalf of the property's regal residents. That all changed on Sunday, April 2 when a white rhino baby, weighing about 100 pounds (per a doctor's estimate), was born to mother Eesha and father Ongava. And the good news kept coming: The little one quickly took to nursing and the bonding process is going "well," too.
A JOYFUL JOURNEY: Eesha has been a denizen of the park since 2008, but "she never showed much breeding interest in the male rhinos." Ongava arrived in 2021, and the two animals began engaging in courtship displays. Soon after, Eesha showed the hallmarks of pregnancy, and the wait began (the Southern white rhino's gestation period lasts around 16 to 18 months). But the team wasn't simply in a wait-and-watch mode; "the rhino care team took turns staying overnight to ensure Eesha and the baby would have support, no matter when the calf was born," shared Safari West. Now that this robust little rhino has arrived, a feeling of relief, and looking forward, has begun. "We feel fortunate and honored to contribute to the growth of global rhino populations and aid in the conservation of this magnificent protected species," shared the park. Rare Baby Rhino Born at Sonoma County's Safari West
A new baby southern white rhino was born Sunday evening up in Sonoma County, the first of that species ever born at Safari West, the 30-year-old private wildlife preserve.
Sunday was a big day at Safari West , the African wildlife preserve in Santa Rosa that's home to almost 1,000 animals spread across 80+ species. The park's female adult rhinoceros, Eesha gave birth to a 150-pound baby calf, who has yet to be named. And we don't know the gender either — Safari West is keeping that under wraps and planning to host a gender-reveal party.
"We feel fortunate and honored to contribute to the growth of global rhino populations and aid in the conservation of this magnificent protected species," Safari West said in a statement.
"This is the best day of my life," said one of Eesha’s handlers, Lori McNeal, speaking to the Press Democrat . McNeal reportedly "had come to work at Safari West from a zoo out of state because of her love of rhinoceroses."
The unnamed calf arrived Sunday at 5:30 p.m. looking "wrinkly, dark, and damp at first," per the Press Democrat, and within minutes was on its feet "if somewhat unsteadily and mystified looking."
Breeding rhinoceroses in captivity has been notably difficult around the world, as Mongabay explains . The southern white rhino is considered a "near threatened" species, with animals sometimes poached for their horns. And the subspecies known as the northern black rhino is already extinct.
As KPIX reports , Eesha came to Safari West 15 years ago, in 2008, and showed little interest in breeding with the only male rhino the park had during that time. A new male, Ongava, was introduced two years ago, and it looks like those two were more compatible. Rhinos take 16 months and more to gestate, and Eesha began showing signs of pregnancy last year.
Safari West was on "Baby Rhino Watch" in recent weeks, and posted the video below to Facebook showing the baby visibly kicking inside Eesha's belly.
The Monterey Zoo commented on Facebook, "Such a glorious and wonderful achievement, WELL DONE, Peter, Nancy and the Safari West Team!!! We couldn’t be more envious and happy for you."
The San Francisco Zoo had its own rhino births to celebrate over the years — prolific mother Elly, a black rhinoceros, had 14 calves over the years, before she passed away at age 46 in 2017. Her grand-calf Boone, who is now a teenager, still resides at the zoo.
Safari West is privately owned by Peter and Nancy Long, and has welcomed in the public for "safari" tours since 1993. They now offer day-trip experiences and overnight "glamping" in safari tents, as well as a full-service restaurant. Safari West is one of only six private wildlife preserves in the U.S. that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Safari West, a private wildlife reserve north of Santa Rosa, announced Saturday it had finally landed on a new name for a baby rhino born there earlier this month: Otto Lang.
The park said staff and visitors had provided several name suggestions, but it ultimately decided to name the rhino after the father of the park’s founder, Peter Lang.

Otto Lang - the father, not the rhino - was a noted skier-turned-Hollywood producer. In a press release, Peter Lang recalled how his father’s work on Hollywood backlots led to Peter meeting a variety of animals on-set. It was there that he developed the fascination which eventually led him to found Safari West.

Baby white rhino born at Safari West
Eesha — a female Southern white rhinoceros — arrived at Safari West in Santa Rosa in 2008. But despite the efforts of the park’s staff, Eesha didn’t show much interest in breeding until very recently.
Keo Hornbostel, the park’s Executive Director, told KALW Eesha seemed to view one potential mate as a brother, and another just didn’t work out. Then, in 2021, the park acquired a new male named Ongava.
“And it was like love at first sight. Although it’s not a fairy tale love story because rhino’s courtships are ferociously violent,” says Hornbostel.
Eesha and Ongava mated, and after 17 months of gestation, Eesha gave birth to a calf on Sunday.
Erika Defer, the Director of Research at Safari West, says that the whole process — from mating to birth — has provided a wealth of opportunities to conduct research . In particular, the staff monitored Eesha’s body temperature throughout her pregnancy.
“Which is really exciting because anecdotally we found some pretty significant changes in heat signatures through that research,” says Defer.
Information obtained from Eesha’s pregnancy could improve care for other rhinos in captivity — and potentially help conservationists identify pregnant rhinos in the wild and strategize accordingly.
