Five of the top 10 safest cities are in New England, according to a report.

The Safest Cities in America

Though crime across the nation has reportedly fallen in the past year , safety weighs heavily on the minds of Americans. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Americans believe crime is “extremely or very serious,” according to a Gallup poll from October 2023.

But being insulated from crime is just one aspect of safety. In an analysis of the safest cities in the U.S., personal financial site WalletHub reviewed 182 cities based on metrics from three categories: financial safety, natural disaster risk, and home and community safety. Indicators in the analysis included everything from a city’s traffic fatalities per capita to its earthquake risk.

The analysis covers the 150 most populated U.S. cities in 2023, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state. Cities in New England dominated the top 10, with Vermont alone snagging two spots.

No. 10: Scottsdale, Arizona

Scottsdale is one of two cities in the Grand Canyon State to break into the top 10 list of safest cities in the country.

No. 9: Burlington, Vermont

Vermont ’s most populous city, Burlington, joins its neighbor, South Burlington, among the nation’s top 10 safest cities. Burlington’s percentage of uninsured people is among the lowest of the cities analyzed, and ranks tenth in the financial safety category.

No. 8: Yonkers, New York

Located just north of New York City, Yonkers scored particularly well in the home and community category, ranking fourth.

The 20 safest cities in the US, ranked

• WalletHub released a 2023 report listing the safest cities in the US.
• Cities were ranked based on 41 indicators of safety, including rates of crime and natural disasters.
• Nashua, New Hampshire, scored the highest, followed by Columbia, Maryland.

You might be shocked to learn that, out of 163 countries, the US was ranked the 131st safest country in the world in 2023 by the Global Peace Index . 

So where is the safest place to live in the US?

The personal-finance website WalletHub released a 2023 report listing the safest cities in the US. The study looked at 182 cities across the US — the 150 most populated and at least two of the most populated cities in each state — and ranked them based on 41 factors across three key areas: home and community safety, natural-disaster risk, and financial safety.

Among the factors considered were the number of mass shootings, murders and assaults per capita, hate crimes per capita, earthquake risk, unemployment rate, and fraud complaints per capita.

Ultimately, danger is unavoidable, but some cities are safer than others for its residents.

These cities are the safest in the US, according to WalletHub.

20. Boise, Idaho

Boise, Idaho , had an estimated population of 236,634 people in July 2022, according to the US Census Bureau. According to US News & World Report, its violent and property crime rates were lower than the national average rate in 2020.

19. Chesapeake, Virginia

Chesapeake, Virginia, has an estimated population of over 252,000 people, according to the US Census Bureau. NeighborhoodScout reported that your chances of becoming the victim of a violent crime were one in 216.

18. Raleigh, North Carolina

Insider reported that some found the cost of living and lack of diversity too difficult to stay in North Carolina. However, Raleigh ranks in the top 10 of the 25 most neighborly cities in the US, according to Neighbor.com . It is also the 18th-safest city in the US by WalletHub's rankings.

17. Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville, Texas , has the second-lowest natural-disaster risk level in WalletHub's study. That said, it also has the highest percentage of uninsured people. In fact, the top five cities with the highest percentage of uninsured people are all in Texas.

16. Cape Coral, Florida

Cape Coral, Florida, is known for its 400 miles of canals, according to the City of Cape Coral website . It is the 16th-safest city in the US, according to WalletHub.

15. Bismarck, North Dakota

Bismarck, North Dakota , ties for the lowest unemployment rate with Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Manchester, New Hampshire; Rapid City, South Dakota; South Burlington, Vermont; and Nashua, New Hampshire.

14. Chandler, Arizona

Chandler, Arizona, has more than 280,000 residents, according to the US Census Bureau. CrimeGrade.org gave the city an A- grade, meaning the crime rate is significantly lower than the average US city. The average grade for a US city is a C.

13. Lewiston, Maine

Lewiston, Maine, is the 13th-safest city in the US, by WalletHub's rankings. According to The Council for Community and Economic Research, the cost of living in Lewiston, Maine, is 3% lower than the national average.

12. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach, Virginia , has the fifth-lowest assaults per capita after Glendale, California; Warwick, Rhode Island; Nashua, New Hampshire; and Irvine, California. It is also ranked the 12th-safest city in the US by WalletHub.

11. Laredo, Texas

Laredo, Texas, has the second-highest percentage of uninsured people. Despite scoring lower in the "financial safety" section of WalletHub's study, the ranking for "home and community safety" and "natural-disaster risk" set Laredo apart as a safer city than most.

10. Scottsdale, Arizona

The 10th-safest city in the US is Scottsdale, Arizona, according to the WalletHub report. With a population of more than 240,000 people, it is one of two Arizona cities to make the top 10.

9. Burlington, Vermont

According to the US Census Bureau, the city of Burlington is made up of just over 44,000 residents. It has the fifth-lowest percentage of uninsured people. Like Arizona, Vermont also had two cities in the top 10 safest cities.

8. Yonkers, New York

Located on the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York , the city of Yonkers has a crime rate that falls well below the New York state average, as reported by The Yonkers Ledger . 

It's worth noting that Yonkers scored low in financial safety but ranked the fourth-safest city in the "home and community" ranking.

7. Casper, Wyoming

Casper, Wyoming, is safer than most cities, with CrimeGrade.org giving the city a B-, meaning the crime rate is slightly lower than the average US city.

6. Portland, Maine

As Maine's largest metro area, Portland is considered the seventh-best place to live in the US out of the 150 most populous metro areas analyzed by US News & World Report .

It is also the sixth-safest city in the US by WalletHub's rankings. It has the second-highest percentage of households with emergency savings, which contributes to it being named the No. 1 city in terms of financial safety.

5. Warwick, Rhode Island

Warwick is the third-largest city in Rhode Island, with a population of more than 83,000. It is the fifth-safest city and has the third-fewest assaults per capita, WalletHub found.

4. Gilbert, Arizona

Located southeast of Phoenix, Arizona , Gilbert has a population of more than 275,000, according to the US Census Bureau. Despite a high financial-safety ranking, the city's ​​cost of living is 19% higher than the national average, according to PayScale .

3. South Burlington, Vermont

South Burlington, Vermont, ties with Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Manchester, New Hampshire; Bismarck, North Dakota; Rapid City, South Dakota; and Nashua, New Hampshire, for the lowest unemployment rate in the US. It also has the third-lowest percentage of uninsured people, thus ranking the city high in financial safety.

However, South Burlington, Vermont, also ties with Cincinnati, Ohio; Salem, Oregon; Washington, DC; Seattle, and Cleveland for the most hate crimes per capita, according to WalletHub.

2. Columbia, Maryland

Columbia, Maryland, is a planned community with a population of over 104,000 recorded at the 2020 census. After Baltimore, it has the second-highest population in Maryland and is the second-safest city in the US.

New Hampshire ranks as the second-safest state in the US, behind only Maine, according to US News & World Report . Its city of Nashua tops WalletHub's list as the safest city in the US. 

Nashua has the second-fewest assaults per capita and ties for the lowest unemployment rate alongside Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Manchester, New Hampshire; Bismarck, North Dakota; Rapid City, South Dakota, and South Burlington, Vermont.

100 Safest Cities in the US

Despite FBI reports that crime across the US is declining, many Americans still feel that crime is on the rise . In fact, more than 7 out of 10 (73%) respondents to our State of Safety survey said they believe crime is increasing—and only 45% said they feel safe in their home state.

But there are still plenty of cities that remain relatively immune to the crime trends and headlines plaguing America’s largest metro areas. The 100 cities and towns that made our list this year bucked nationwide trends, showing a collective drop in both violent and property crime rates. Comparatively, the US violent crime rate held steady at 4.0 incidents per 1,000 people year over year, while the property crime rate rose 7%, from 19.3 to 20.7 incidents per 1,000.

America’s safest cities versus nationwide crime rates

When the FBI released their final crime numbers for 2022 (the last year for which complete data is available), we saw a rise in property crime for the first time since we've been tracking crime rates across the US. Violent crime rates remained steady year over year.

Nationwide, property crime offenses jumped 7.1% in 2022 compared to the prior year. But it's not all doom and gloom—an extended view shows a significant 24.9% decrease over 10 years. The national property crime rate is 20.7 incidents per 1,000 people, but America's safest cities come in at less than half of that with 9.9 incidents per 1,000. 

Likewise, the safest cities in the US report far less violent crime than the nationwide average. Reporting a collective average of 1.1 violent incidents per 1,000 people, the cities that made our list are 73% below the nationwide violent crime rate of 4.0.

A closer look at the safest cities in the US

For the purposes of this report, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.

While there’s no one thing that indicates if a city will report higher or lower numbers of crimes, we’ve noticed some things that stand out about the 100 cities on our list. Here’s a rundown of some of the most interesting factors we’ve uncovered during our analysis.

Crime insights  

• The violent crime rate among the safest cities is 1.0 incidents per 1,000 people—that’s 73% lower than the national rate of 4.0.
• The property crime rate among the safest cities is 9.9 incidents per 1,000—that’s 52% lower than the national rate of 20.7.
• 70 cities reported fewer than 100 total violent crimes and 29 reported fewer than 50.
• Greenwich, CT reported the fewest violent crimes, with just 13, and none of those were homicide.
• 47% of the cities had no murders reported, including 4 with populations over 100,000: Lakewood Township, NJ ; Meridian, ID ; Cary, NC ; Frisco, TX .
• Jackson Township, NJ —our number one safest city in the US, reported the fewest total property crimes, with 265.
• 39 cities reported 50 or fewer burglaries, with Novi, MI coming in the lowest with 18.

Demographic insights  

• 26 states are represented on this year's list, with Illinois boasting the most safe cities at 10.
• The average population of our 100 safest cities is 80,501.
• California is home to both the smallest and largest cities in our list: Poway has the smallest population at 48,011 and Irvine has the largest with 311,696.
• 4 states have 9 cities that made the list: California, Michigan , New Jersey , and Texas .
• Arizona and Massachusetts have the third-most cities on the list, with 6 each.

NOTE: If you don’t see your city on the list, it means that it was below the population threshold or didn’t submit a complete crime report to the FBI in 2022, the last year for which complete data was available at time of publication.

How we ranked the safest cities in America

To identify the 100 safest cities in the country, we analyzed FBI crime report statistics and population data. The FBI data is from 2022 (the most recent year for which complete data was available as of publication). Our rankings were based solely on per capita crime data; no other factors were included.

Population thresholds  

We established a minimum population threshold of 25,000. Cities that fell below the population threshold were excluded, along with cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

Crime rates 

Our rankings are based on both violent and property crime numbers. We looked at the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city and the number of reported property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft).

Arson is excluded from the FBI’s property crime rates, so we excluded it as well.

To level the playing field, we calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. This makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations. (By comparison, the FBI uses the number of crimes per 100,000 people to calculate its rates.)

Both violent and property crime numbers were weighted equally. That means that a city with no violent crimes reported could end up lower on the list due to a higher property crime rate, and vice versa. We also standardized violent and property crime for each state before weighting.

10. Colorado Springs, Colorado

Population:  478,961

Safety score:  43.4 (out of 100, with 1 being the safest score)

Bottom Line: Colorado Springs

Possibly one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cities in the state, Colorado Springs is also very safe. Surrounded by wonders of nature that include the iconic Garden of the Gods and Pike National Forest, you'll never be far from the mountains. If you want to challenge yourself, try to summit Pikes Peak, one of Colorado's Fourteeners (mountains with peaks higher than 14,000 feet).

9. Boston, Massachusetts

Bottom Line: Boston

You may be surprised to see Boston on here. The city is filled with contrasts. Some, like its juxtaposition of historic and modern landmarks, are good. But there's also notorious inequality, which gives the city a bad reputation. Still, compared to other cities of its size, Boston doesn't fare too badly in terms of safety. 

Spend your time on the Freedom Trail, strolling along the waterfront, doing a whale-watching tour or visiting an art museum. Oh, and don't forget to indulge in the city's fine dining restaurants.

8. Raleigh, North Carolina

Bottom Line: Raleigh

North Carolina's capital is known for its universities. As a student city, it's lively, fun and modern. Its numerous oak trees provide shade and enhance its good looks. For even more nature, head to Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, or go to Pullen Park, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. For some culture, visit the North Carolina Museum of Art. And you can do all of this without fear for your safety.

Bottom Line: Fort Worth

While Fort Worth is the lesser-known part of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, it's a city definitely worth visiting. For one, it's safer than its counterpart. It's also proudly western, playing up its cattle history with its nickname, Cowtown. You'll also find a rich legacy of funk, R&B, hip hop and blues. Visit the Fort Worth Stockyards to see several landmarks like the National Cowgirl Museum.

Though it doesn't get as much attention as neighboring Dallas-Fort Worth, Plano is coming into its own. This has meant an influx of new people, ideas and money, which often translate into a better quality of life. For a unique experience, visit the Heritage Farmstead Museum to see what 19th-century Texas looked like.

Violence may seem like an omnipresent concern for cities in America, but its prevalence varies dramatically depending on where you live. While some communities are besieged by worrying rates of violent crime, there are others — mostly smaller in size and population — that enjoy next to none. Perhaps surprisingly, even some of the bigger cities are still relatively safe. (And some are enjoying a construction boom .) Among America's larger population centers, these are the 20 safest big cities in the U.S. in the past year according to data from a SmartAsset study.

20. Pasadena, California

Population: 141,029

Located within commuting distance of Los Angeles, sunny Pasadena is known for being the center of California's scientific research and development, especially when it comes to aeronautics. We have the California Institute of Technology — one of America's most selective engineering colleges — to thank for that.

19. Palmdale, California

Population: 155,079 Much like Pasadena, Palmdale is a small Southern California city on the outskirts of Los Angeles that grew in part thanks to the aeronautics and technology industry. And though it is part of LA County, you're more likely to find Joshua trees here than celebrities.

18. Irvine, California

Population: 287,401 This planned city in central Orange County is notable for its highly rated public school system as well as its low rates of violent crime and property crime. You'll also find plenty of sunshine, outdoor activities, and a growing food scene. Founded by the Irvine Company, the sprawling town is also home to the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and numerous corporate headquarters.

Population: 159,428

History buffs are sure to be familiar with Alexandria thanks to its colonial past. That said, the city has come a long way since its days as a major tobacco hub. It's set to be the site of Amazon's $2.5 billion HQ2, a futuristic East Coast campus, and the city's old town is a cultural hot spot for tourists and Washington D.C. residents.

Population: 182,781 Brownsville is located at the very tip of Texas, making it the southernmost border town  with Mexico. That geography has shaped the city's binational community, which is practically bilingual  and more than 90% Hispanic . While the town has its problems  — many of its residents are low-income, and health care problems abound — it remains one of the safest cities in the country.

15. College Station, Texas

Population: 117,911 College station is — you guessed it — a university town. Home to the public land-grant university Texas A&M, the city's median age is just 23 , which makes sense given that students make up more than half the city's population. It's also one of the  fastest growing cities  in the country.

14. Round Rock, Texas

Location: 133,372 Round Rock traces its history back to 1848 , when a blacksmith set up shop near Brushy Creek, the town's first name. The community expanded in the next few decades, especially after the International-Great Northern Railroad set its tracks a short distance from Round Rock. But it wasn't until the 1970s and '80s that a manufacturing and tech boom transformed the town into the city it is today.

13. Laredo, Texas

Population: 251,671 The predominantly Latino city of Laredo ranks as both one of America's least diverse cities  and one of its safest. The city offers excellent dining options, a rich cultural history, and an eclectic arts scene. The only metrics in which it ranks significantly worse than its peer cities are in  vehicular and drug poisoning mortality.

12. San Jose, California

Population:  1,021,795 On the southern end of the San Francisco Bay area, San Jose is California's third-largest city and anchors the thriving tech hub that is Silicon Valley. No doubt thanks in part to its booming economy and prohibitive housing costs, the city boasts low crime rates across the board.

11. Fremont, California

Population: 241,110 Just north of San Jose, Fremont is another hotbed for the technology sector. It was in the 1980s and '90s that companies like Apple began to build manufacturing plants in the area, and by the early 2000s, more than 750 tech companies had opened facilities in this Bay Area city. That's apparent in the  median household income figures , which regularly top $100,000.

10. Torrance, California

Population: 143,592

As part of the greater Los Angeles area, Torrance is commuting distance from La La Land's most popular locales — just be prepared for traffic. It's also a city in its own right, known for being safer than neighboring cities and its Asian community. So if you're looking for killer yakitori  or ramen , Torrance is the place to be.

9. Plano, Texas

Population: 287,677 Plano, which means "flat" in Spanish, started as a small farming community in the 1870s. It more or less remained that way until after World War II, when commuter rail stopped serving the town. The city's very own website admits that that the post-war period was a dark time, as Plano became a run-down ghost town. But revitalization efforts since the '80s have breathed life back into the Dallas suburb, and today Plano ranks in the top 10 best places to live in the U.S.

7. Santa Clara, California (tie)

Population: 130,365 From the Intel Museum to the many tech companies that call this city home, Santa Clara is dominated by high-income programmers and engineers. The city is also well-known for being the location of one of Spain's infamous missions, which were religious outposts that colonizers used to evangelize Native Americans. Today, you can still visit Mission Santa Clara de Asís, one of 21 Franciscan churches in California.

7. Cary, North Carolina (tie)

Population: 170,282

Cary is part of North Carolina's Research Triangle Park, which is home to three major research universities: the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Duke; and North Carolina State. Those institutions have completely transformed the area, causing the population to double  just a few years after the triangle's founding in 1959. Today, Cary hosts dozens of festivals every year and boasts 30 parks and over 80 miles of trails.

Population:  143,268

Just 50 miles west of Brownsville, McAllen is a border town with a notable binational community  and Spanish-speaking population. Its proximity to Mexico also shapes its economy, which is dominated by foreign trade, especially when it comes to processing fruits, vegetables, and cotton.

Population:  199,303

While Glendale might be overshadowed by its larger, more glamorous neighbor, this Southern California suburb is an ethnically diverse cultural center just a few miles from Los Angeles' hottest neighborhoods. And for nature lovers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Glendale's megamall, the nearby Verdugo Mountains offer spectacular views of the city below.

Population: 152,703

If you know the Silicon Valley, then you've certainly noticed a trend. Many of the safest cities in the U.S. are located in this tech metropolis — and Sunnyvale is no exception. Yes, Sunnyvale may be a bit dull, but it's a great place to raise a family, and you're a reasonable drive from two of California's largest cities, San Jose and San Francisco.

McKinney is a large suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, just 30 miles north of the Big D. It consistently ranks among the most livable cities  in the U.S. thanks to the city's wealth of outdoor offerings, tasty wineries, and quaint downtown. For beer drinkers, the city also has a respectable number of local breweries, including one that's located in a historic cotton mill.

San Francisco, California

Kickstarting our list, we have the infinitely charming San Francisco located in sunny California. Overall, it’s a very safe travel destination, and crime that does occur usually only applies to the dangerous suburbs of the city, rarely frequented by tourists. There’s also the threat of the occasional earthquake, but they aren’t that common, and the last big tremor was in 1994.

As mentioned above, crime in San Francisco is restricted to certain neighborhoods, so it would be a good idea to research your accommodation before booking. The Tenderloin District, SoMa, Mission District, and Bayview are by no means off-limits, but crime rates are higher here and poverty persists.

In general, the city demonstrates much lower violent crime rates than other US cities . Although there’s a risk of pickpocketing and purse snatching along Fisherman’s Wharf and the F-Market Streetcar line. You should also keep your wits about you on public transport. Other places it would be wise to keep an eye on your belongings are crowded places, and downtown districts like Mid Market, 6th Street, and the Western Addition. Naturally, you should avoid dark alleyways and walk around at night.

San Francisco is also very safe for female travelers overall, and following basic precautions measures, as they would in any other city, should minimize the chances of anything going awry/ All in all, if safety is your top priority, San Francisco has got you covered, and it has more than enough gorgeous beaches, and vibrant attractions to satisfy every taste.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

With its gorgeous coastline, charming fishing spots, cultural attractions, and many breweries, it comes as no surprise that Virginia Beach is a tourist hotspot. It’s also earned the best crime score among large cities in the US based on recent FBI data for violent and property crimes, so you can rest assured that it’s very safe to visit. 

This city offers an attraction to satisfy every occasion while ranking with a low violent crime rate of 11.8 per 1,000 residents, a property crime score of 17.6, and a low total crime score of 36.8. Be that as it may, you shouldn’t throw all caution to the wind, and Virginia is no stranger to hurricanes, with peak season falling from mid-August to mid-October. 

In addition to its safety, it’s also acquired a bit of a reputation for being an excellent romantic getaway spot due to its wealth of beautiful beautiful beaches and lush resorts. That being said, it suffers from occasional property crimes like burglaries or motor vehicle theft, so keep an eye on your surroundings to be extra safe. Alaska has also experienced natural disasters in the past, and it’s home to a vast array of wildlife. It’s a good idea to avoid approaching or feeding animals you see outdoors. 

Nevertheless, Wasilla is a very relaxed city, and visitors can expect to find a variety of family-friendly attractions including museums and state recreational areas. For starters, you could visit the Alaska Museum of Transportation and Industry. Here you’ll explore historic train cars, commercial fishing boats, automobiles, and exhibits highlighting the state’s gold mining as well as aviation history. There are also vintage train and toy displays to keep the young ones entertained. Chinatown and its surrounding areas should also be avoided at night, since muggings are common, although it is very safe all over the city during the day. You should also bear in mind that Honolulu suffers from occasional property crime and we don’t encourage storing anything valuable in your car. Vancouver, Canada

From its magnificent mountains to its picturesque oceans, art galleries, and lively nightlife, Vancouver truly is unlike any other city in Canada . In fact, it is one of the top five cities in the world for quality of life, but as with any metropolis, there are problems with crime. 

Isolated areas like Stanley Park, can become dangerous due to the presence of drugs and prostitution at night, and while violent crime is rare, it’s still best to take general precautions. Still, if you don’t actively seek it, this city is considered virtually crime-free to tourists, especially since crimes tend to happen in areas away from tourist attractions, like in the Downtown, which is still safe throughout the day. 

It’s also a very safe place for solo female travelers, and the locals are known to be supremely helpful and welcoming. Don’t walk around alone in the dark but otherwise, your trip to Vancouver should be a problem-free one full of the culture and natural allure of Canada.

Toronto, Canada

​​Boasting an entrancingly diverse population, along with a thriving culinary scene, architectural wonders, and majestic indoor gardens, Toronto truly has something for everyone. It’s also considered the least dangerous city in North America and ranks among the safest cities in the world, despite being such a populous destination.

One of the best things about Toronto is that it’s a safe place to walk both during the day and at night. However, one of the longest streets in the city, Yonge Street, can be potentially dangerous at night, along with The Entertainment District, which is lined with nightclubs and restaurants overflowing with intoxicated revelers. 

There are also occasional reports of pickpocketing in restaurants and cafés, so tourists should keep an eye on their surroundings and belongings. Canada has a great tourism infrastructure and reliable police force though, so tourists shouldn’t stress too much.

Considering it’s one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world, Canada is privy to natural disasters as well. Potential threats include tornadoes, snowstorms, and floods, although the risk level is dependent on the region, and in Toronto’s case it’s decidedly low.

Montreal, Canada

It might be one of Canada’s biggest, and most loved cities, but, surprisingly, Montreal also has one of the country’s lowest crime rates. It’s a bit of a cultural melting pot too, and there’s no shortage of museums, galleries, microbreweries, and dynamic festivals to explore. 

As a rule of thumb, to ensure your safety in Montreal, you should take general travel safety precautions. This means keeping an eye on your surroundings, staying on top of local as well as national news, and knowing who to contact in emergency situations. 

Pickpocketing is the most common tourist crime here, but it rarely happens, and you can avoid it by wearing cross-body bags, and keeping your cash concealed. Montreal’s police are also very responsive and speak both English and French, so assistance is guaranteed, although you probably won’t need it. It would be a good idea to stay away from streets like Notre Dame Quest, Wellington-St, Montreal Nord, and areas like The Red Light district at night as well. 

Montreal is also a great destination for solo as well as female travelers, and as long as you take basic precautions, like not accepting drinks from strangers, and avoiding bad areas at nighttime, you should be perfectly fine. Is New York safe?

It might have a reputation for gun crime and robberies, but the central metropolitan area of New York is one of the safest in the world. Visitors and residents remain under the protection of the friendly and vigilant police force and although tourists should be wary of petty crime and pickpockets, there is no reason to feel unsafe in New York City. Most of New York’s crime is isolated to the suburbs of Hunts Point, Brownsville, East Harlem, and Mott Haven where gang and property crime is high. Still, this shouldn’t affect tourists as long as you research your accommodation well before visiting. 

What is the safest state in North America?

It might be peppered with safe cities, but this doesn’t mean North America’s safest capitals are reflective of their states at large. The safest states in the US are actually Rhode Island and Vermont with their small and friendly populations. Safest Countries in the World 2024

Iceland has been the safest country in the world for the 14th year in a row, according to the Global Peace Index.

The Nordic countries of Europe (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland) rank among the 25 safest globally, most of them also being among the top 10 happiest nations worldwide.

Common attributes of the world's safest countries include high levels of wealth, social welfare, education, effective criminal justice systems, and positive government-citizen relationships.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) ranks the safest and most peaceful countries in the world. This report is published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which defines itself as "an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to shifting the world's focus to peace as a positive, achievable and tangible measure of human wellbeing and progress." The report researches countries to determine which are the safest and which are the most dangerous .

A total of 163 countries are featured in the GPI report, which ranks each country's level of safety or danger based upon 23 different indicators. The indicators used to compile the GPI include the number of internal and external violent conflicts, level of distrust, political instability, potential for terrorist acts, number of homicides, and military expenditures as a percentage of GDP. These indicators are grouped into three broad categories—Ongoing International Conflict, Societal Safety and Security, and Militarization—and a score is calculated for each of the 163 nations featured in the report. The lower the score, the higher the nation is ranked in terms of safety.

Top 15 Safest Countries in the World (Global Peace Index — lower is better):

The United States ranked 129th in the Global Peace Ranking for 2022. The United States' ranking has fallen every year since 2016, a drop usually attributed to a decrease in life satisfaction, rising political division, and an increasing wealth gap.

Is the World Becoming More or Less Safe?

According to the 2022 GPI report, the world has become less safe over the past 14 years, with per-country scores deteriorating by 3.2% on average. The report further notes that safety and peacefulness have decreased for eleven of the past fourteen years. For example, global peace declined by 0.3% overall between the 2021 and 2022 GPI reports. While safety improved in 90 countries, it dropped in 71 countries (and remained stable in two), for a net loss.

The 2022 report also states that declines tend to happen more swiftly and precipitously than do improvements, and pointed out that the most significant deterioration occurred in countries in conflict, such as Russia , Ukraine , Guinea , Burkina Faso , and Haiti . Europe remained the most peaceful region in the world, a position it has held for all the 16 years in which the Global Peace Index has existed.

World peace also decreased between the 2020 and 2021 reports, though by a much smaller margin of 0.07%, with 87 countries improving and 73 deteriorating. The COVID-19 crisis and increasing tensions among major world powers were cited as two main causes for the decrease. A comparison of the 2020 and 2019 reports, to step back a year, reveals a total of 81 countries growing more peaceful and 80 deteriorating. The average country score deteriorated by 0.34%.

The Safest Continent in the World

A majority of the top 25 safest countries are European countries. Most notable are the Nordic countries of Europe. Norway , Sweden , Denmark , Iceland , and Finland are not only among Europe's safest countries , they are among the top 25 safest countries anywhere on Earth. This region is thus considered the safest in the world, with a homicide rate of 0.8 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants. These five Nordic countries are all in the top 10 happiest countries in the world as well. The second-safest region among the top 25 safest countries is Asia . Both Europe and Asia have the world’s lowest homicide rates of 3 or fewer per 100,000 inhabitants.

Qualities the World's Safest Countries Have in Common

There are some commonalities among the safest countries in the world. For instance, safe countries tend to display high levels of wealth, social welfare, and education. Additionally, safe countries typically have effective criminal justice systems and governments that maintain very healthy relationships with their citizens.

Profiles of the World's 10 Safest Countries

According to the Global Peace Index, Iceland is the safest country in the world for the 14th year in a row. Iceland is a Nordic nation with a relatively small population of 340,000. Iceland has a very low level of crime, which is typically attributed to its high standard of living, small population, strong social attitudes against crime, a high level of trust in its well-trained police force, and a lack of tension among social and economic classes. Iceland has no military, and the police do not carry firearms (only extendable batons and pepper spray). Iceland also has laws in place to guarantee equality, such as legal same-sex marriage and same-sex adoptions, religious freedom, and equal pay for men and women.

2. New Zealand

New Zealand is the second-safest country in the world. Like Iceland, New Zealand has a very low crime rate, and violent crime is especially rare. Theft is still worth guarding against, especially in tourist areas (which holds true in every country in the world), but overall risk is minimal. Unlike its neighbor Australia , which is known for its dangerous wildlife (box jellyfish, taipan snakes, stonefish, funnel web spiders, and more), New Zealand has no deadly animals. New Zealanders are generally open-minded and have laws in place to prevent the violation of anyone's freedom of speech or expression. As in Iceland, police in New Zealand do not carry personal firearms.

Ireland became notably more peaceful in 2021 and vaulted from 11th place to 3rd in the 2022 rankings as a result. Crime is quite low outside of a few city neighborhoods ( as in any country, one should be wary of pickpockets and scammers in tourist-dense areas), and there is little threat of cultural violence or terrorism. In fact, the Irish landscape may pose a greater safety risk than its people—the country's breathtaking cliffs and winding country roads must be treated with respect, especially during a sudden rainstorm or in areas with no cell reception.

Ranked fourth on the 2022 Global Peace Index, Denmark is another one of the safest and happiest countries in the world. Denmark is one of the few countries where people report feeling safe at any time of day or night, even children. Denmark has a high level of equality and a strong sense of common responsibility for social welfare — two qualities that contribute to its citizens' feelings of safety and happiness.

Corruption is rare in Danish business or politics, as honesty and trust are top priorities. While Denmark has a high personal income tax , it funds social programs that ensure all people receive services and perks that help them live comfortable lives. For example, everyone in Denmark has access to tuition-free higher education and healthcare with no additional fees to them, and the elderly are provided at-home care helpers.

Austria ranked as the fifth-safest country in the world for 2022. While violent demonstrations in the wake of ongoing social unrest remain a concern, these are relatively easy to avoid, and otherwise, Austria is a very safe country to visit. Serious crimes are uncommon (with the usual caveat to watch for pickpockets and purse-snatchers). Additionally, Austria has been spared any major acts of terrorism in recent years.

6. Portugal

Portugal comes in sixth in the most peaceful countries rankings for 2022. In 2014, Portugal was ranked 18th globally and has since made significant strides. Unlike Iceland and New Zealand, Portugal has armed police; however, an increased police presence has resulted in a decreased crime rate in the country. In recent years, Portugal has experienced an economic resurgence, decreasing its unemployment rate from over 17% to under 7%. Portugal consistently ranks among the best countries for retirement , due in no small part to its high level of safety.

7. Slovenia

One of the former constituents of Yugoslavia , Slovenia has a high safety ranking that can be attributed to its excellent scores in three categories: travel security, medical risks, and road safety. Like many Slavic states , Slovenia installed a democratic government in the mid-1990s and is now focused on improving quality of life in many areas, including safety and sustainability.

8. Czech Republic

Crime rates in the Czech Republic have steadily decreased over the years, with rates of violent crime in particular dropping significantly. The Czech Republic also has a low incidence of terrorism and natural disasters. Finally, the country boasts many clean and efficient hospitals and a state-run health insurance system that offers affordable rates and enables near-universal coverage.

9. Singapore

Singapore ranks ninth on the GPI for 2022. In a Gallup report from 2018, Singapore residents felt the highest sense of personal security and had more positive experiences with law enforcement than did residents of any other country. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, possibly due to the severe penalties that are issued for even small crimes. The government and police strictly control guns and other firearms, and violent and confrontational crimes are rare in Singapore.

As a city-state, Singapore also ranks as the second- safest city in the world according to the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). In 2019, Singapore ranked first for infrastructure security and personal security, second for digital security, and eighth for health security.

The tenth-safest country in the world for 2022 is Japan. Japan has been in the top ten countries in the Global Peace Index for 14 years, consistently receiving high marks for low crime rates , minimal internal conflict, and virtually nonexistent political unrest. Japan's proximity to potentially hostile neighbors China and North Korea could become a threat to its safety at some point, but has not thus far.

Japan is known for citizens having limited access to firearms, as the Japanese do not view carrying a firearm as an individual's right. According to the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Tokyo was the safest city in the world in 2019, ranking first in cybersecurity, second for health security, and fourth for infrastructure security and personal security.

IEP applies a rigorous research process to arrive at its GPI rankings. According to IEP , “The GPI covers 163 countries comprising 99.7 percent of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources.”

This City Was Just Named No. 1 in the U.S. to Live, Work, and Visit

The same city has topped the list since its inaugural edition nine years ago.

What is the best city in America ? It’s not an easy question to answer, but each year, Resonance, a global consulting company, releases one of the most respected and comprehensive lists of the most desirable urban areas to live, work, and visit based on a methodology that includes a large variety of crucial statistics on livability, desirability, and prosperity. Rankings are based on cities with over half a million residents.

And New York City takes the top spot for the ninth consecutive year. The Big Apple ranked first in the shopping, landmarks, and sights categories.

“In 2024, it is U.S. urban recovery writ large, with a dizzying roster of new shows, hotels, and parks — and record real estate prices. But the Big Apple is always worth the price of admission, especially in these glory days,” the report states, adding that estimates show that the city would recover 97 percent of its pre-pandemic visitation levels by the end of this year.

And while tourism is booming, it is not all good news for New York City. The report also notes that office occupancy is at 50 percent from pre-pandemic levels, and subway ridership is down as well.

Second on Resonance’s list of the best cities in America is Chicago, with the company highlighting its “infrastructure and affordability that eludes many other iconic global cities.” Chicago was second in the nightlife subcategory and first in the convention center subcategory, which measures the size of the largest convention center in the city. Chicago is also home to the second-most Fortune 500 headquarters in the country, behind New York, and ranks in the top five in several prosperity categories like job postings and professional services.

Los Angeles takes the bronze. According to the report, the City of Angels has some of the best restaurants in the country and ranks second for museums. The report also highlights the city’s LAX investment project, the largest in the city’s history, which is now in its final phase, and America’s first high-speed, all-electric rail, which, by 2028, will connect Los Angeles with Las Vegas and significantly boost tourism, create jobs, and reduce the city’s carbon footprint.

Miami and Las Vegas round out the top five best cities in America, with Sin City also ranking first in the attractions subcategory and Miami in the foreign-born residents' subcategory. San Francisco, Boston, and Washington, D.C., are sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. The last two spots are for Seattle (ninth) and Houston (10th).

The only American cities to make the top 10 of the best world cities in 2024 are New York City and San Francisco.

Hurricane Beryl Batters Jamaica as 2 Other Islands Lie in Ruin

The powerful storm, which devastated communities in the eastern Caribbean earlier this week, was headed next to the Cayman Islands.

Jamaica was still being hammered by strong winds and heavy rain early Thursday as Hurricane Beryl passed its southern coast, having claimed at least one life on the island. The powerful storm, which devastated communities in the eastern Caribbean earlier in the week, was headed next to the Cayman Islands.

Beryl, which was downgraded after midnight to a Category 3 storm, has killed at least eight people in total. Virtually every building on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada, where the storm made landfall on Monday as a Category 4 hurricane, lay in ruins, with marinas and a hospital destroyed, rooftops torn away and tree trunks snapped like matchsticks across the drenched earth.

“We have to rebuild from the ground up,” said Dickon Mitchell, the prime minister of Grenada.

Beryl was expected to remain a dangerous hurricane as it passed just south of the Caymans, where forecasters said the storm surge could raise water levels by up to four feet.

In Mexico, officials warned that the country could be hit twice in the coming days. Most of the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, were under a hurricane warning as of early Thursday. By the weekend, Beryl is expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mexico, where it could restrengthen into a hurricane.

In Jamaica, hundreds of thousands of households lost power, and several communities were flooded. Officials warned that the full extent of the damage was not yet clear. Beryl was the strongest storm to approach the island in over a decade. The last time a major hurricane passed within 70 miles of Jamaica was in 2007, and it has been even longer since one made landfall.

The first confirmed death in Jamaica because of the storm came when a woman was killed as a tree fell on her house in the western parish of Hanover, the head of the country’s disaster agency, Richard Thompson, said.

A rescue team was also searching for a 20-year-old man who had been swept away in a gully in Kingston after trying to retrieve a ball that he and friends had been playing with, according to a senior police officer, Michael Phipps.

In Grenada, officials said about 98 percent of the buildings on Carriacou and Petite Martinique, where 9,000 to 10,000 people live in total, had been damaged or destroyed, including Carriacou’s main health facility, the Princess Royal Hospital. Crops were ravaged, and fallen trees and utility poles littered the streets.

The natural environment also took a beating.

“There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou,” Mr. Mitchell said after visiting the islands. “The mangroves are totally destroyed.”

The death toll may rise as recovery and aid efforts continue. Officials have reported three deaths from the storm in Grenada, two of them in Carriacou. Another was reported in the Caribbean country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, said on Tuesday that three deaths had been reported in that country’s north.

In Jamaica, emergency teams were beginning to clear the roads blocked by fallen trees, debris and utility poles in several flood-ravaged communities as Beryl moved away from the island. Some 80 roads were affected, officials said. Many houses and businesses had lost their roofs. Recovery efforts were being affected by still-torrential rainfall and gusty winds.

Electricity was restored to some areas, and Jamaicans were trying to calculate their losses. The storm pummeled the south central parish of St. Elizabeth, called the “breadbasket” of Jamaica for its role in supplying key crops.

“We have had some major damage,” said Lenworth Fulton, who heads the largest farming group in Jamaica. “Crops such as yam, coconut, coffee, carrots have been badly affected.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica said nearly 500 people had taken refuge in shelters across the island.

And the hurricane had ripped away a section of the roof of Jamaica’s main airport, the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, which closed on Tuesday night.

Jamaica’s transport minister, Daryl Vaz, said a plan was being prepared to figure out how the airport would operate while the jet bridge roof for boarding and arrivals was being repaired. The storm was expected to approach the Cayman Islands overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.

In the Caymans, most businesses had started closing their doors as residents lined up for last-minute purchases, enduring painfully slow commutes through dense traffic.

All hotels on the island had also activated their emergency plans, and flights had already evacuated more than 1,000 people.

Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly of the Caymans said the shelter-in-place order would begin on Wednesday evening.

“Let us remain calm, stay prepared, look after one another as we face this challenge together,” she said in a news briefing. “We can minimize the impact of Hurricane Beryl and protect our community if we do it together.”

But the government’s actions did not put Puspa Rumba-Marcum, 40, at ease.

“Despite what the leaders say, I’m really scared,” said Ms. Rumba-Marcum, a hairstylist originally from Nepal. “I’m not sure if Cayman is well prepared for this.”

Already, the storm has set records as the first Category 4 hurricane — and then the first Category 5 storm — to form in the Atlantic Ocean so early in the season. A recent study found that with ocean temperatures rising, hurricanes in the Atlantic have become likelier to grow into a major storm within just 24 hours.

Mr. Mitchell, Grenada’s prime minister, said that the powerful storm was a direct result of global warming, and that Grenada and countries like it were on the front line of the climate crisis.

“We are no longer prepared to accept that it’s OK for us to constantly suffer significant, clearly demonstrated loss and damage arising from climatic events and be expected to rebuild year after year while the countries that are responsible for creating this situation — and exacerbating this situation — sit idly by,” he said.
