Sanya Travel Guide

The city of Sanya, Hainan Province, represents the southernmost point along the South China Sea coast of Hainan Island, itself located just off the coast of Guangdong Province. Hainan Island's western and northern coasts face the Gulf of Tonkin that lies between the island and Vietnam. Sanya's ancient name was Yazhou, meaning literally "cliff state", a reference to the fact that the city is ringed on three sides by mountains. The city of Sanya was also often referred to as Tianyahaijiao – meaning, literally, "the place where the sky and the ocean meet", or "the end of the earth", figuratively speaking. In somewhat less ancient, dynastic times, Sanya came to be known as China's "Southern Gate", thanks to its role as a seaport.

As indicated, Sanya is surrounded by mountains. There are mountains that lie farther recessed from the coast, though they do not exactly ring the city, while Yalong Bay itself, home to Sanya's perhaps best beach, is surrounded on three sides by mountains, some of which reach almost to the coastline. There are numerous streams that drain the mountain range that lies behind Sanya (looking landward, or northward), that is, for the most part, they drain the natural reservoirs that have formed high up in the mountains behind Sanya. Some of these streams empty into Sanya Bay itself, while others empty either into Dadong Bay or Yalong Bay. Water, both freshwater as well as saltwater, is therefore a central theme in the city of Sanya.

Sanya History

The island of Hainan has an interesting Chinese history, of which the city of Sanya naturally forms a part, albeit, only a relatively recent part of that history. The island was made an integral part of China early on, surely for defensive reasons, that is, as soon as the first Chinese emperor concerned himself about Guangdong Province, he would naturally be concerned about Hainan Island, since it represented Guangdong's seaward flank, therefore the Chinese emperors, beginning presumably with the Qin (BCE 221-207) Dynasty ("presumably" because the first mention of the island in Chinese historical annals stems from the Western Han (BCE 206 - CE 009) Dynasty , when the emperor established a military garrison on the island, but it is believed that the previous short dynasty, the Qin (BCE 221-207) Dynasty, had already made the island into a prefecture) took care to incorporate the island into the empire.

Hainan's main function, apart from that of a military garrison, was that it long served as a place of exile for disgraced public officials, in much the same way that Saint Helena (the God-forsaken, British-controlled, mid-Atlantic island situated roughly midway between South America and Africa and where a humiliated, post-Waterloo Napoleon was exiled) and Devil's Island (in French Guiana, where the French military officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Dreyfus, convicted of spying on his country on behalf of the Germans, was exiled in 1895, but soon exonerated and released in 1899) served as island exiles.

The most famous personage to be exiled to Hainan Island was the Song (CE 960-1279) Dynasty poet, Su Shi (CE 1037-1101), better known as Su Dongpo, though, on Hainan Island, the poet lived in the village of Zhonghe, roughly midway along the island's northern coastline, near Danzhou Bay. The poet was often at odds with the various factional political intrigues at court, and criticized these in his poems, but his political enemies always managed to construe Su's critical poems as being critical of the emperor – which is what landed him in a state of exile on more than one occasion – while in fact, Su never criticized the emperor, only some of the vicious political factions at court. Such dastardly political machinations would also plague the courts of Europe's monarchs centuries later.

At the time of Su's exile to Hainan, the Chinese presence on the island was restricted chiefly to the northeastern half of Hainan, which is predominantly flatland, whereas the southwestern half of the island is mountainous. Typical for mountainous islands elsewhere in China (such as Taiwan), when the mainstream Chinese would arrive, they would settle in the lowland regions, while the indigenous tribes would retreat to the mountainous areas, depending, of course, on the degree to which the indigenous tribes were willing to integrate with their new masters. Though Hainan's Li villages are scattered round about the island, the greatest concentration of these villages are to be found in the mountainous, southwestern half of the island. In all, there are some 20 ethnic minority groups represented on Hainan Island, a handful of which live in enclaves, or ethnic villages.

The most typical person to be exiled to Hainan was a government official who had abused his office, or who had fallen afoul of the ruling faction at court. Of course, as soon as the faction in question was swept from power (lost its influence with the emperor), the wronged public official would often be rehabilitated.

Hainan Island fell to the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-45), which of course spanned the Second World War (1939-45) in the Pacific Theatre; Hainan Island remained occupied by the Japanese from from 1941-45. During this period, the Imperial Japanese Navy was based in the city of Sanya, called Samah by the Japanese, as the city was strategically placed for monitoring and controlling the entrance to the Gulf of Tonkin as well as the South China Sea between the Indochinese Peninsula, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Present-Day Sanya

As late as 2006, Hainan Island was touted in some travel circles as a wonderfully preserved, blue-collar vacation destination. It was also a place where many Chinese retirees living on a modest, fixed income would retire, similar to the urge among middle class northerners in the U.S. to move to the state of Florida to enjoy their retirement years. All that is rapidly changing now on Hainan Island, since the government of the PRC, in cooperation with the provincial government of Hainan, has decided to cash in on the South Sea Island tourism potential of the island.

As most Westerners have probably observed by now, when the Chinese state makes a decision to develop a region, the distance between the decision and the fait accompli is amazingly – and perhaps enviably – short in comparison to regional development or urban renewal in the West, where environmental impact studies first have to be conducted. Not so in China; once a development decision is taken, construction generally follows immediately, though where local resistance is significant, the authorities naturally proceed as diplomatically as possible, while never losing sight of the ultimate goal.

Thus the Chinese state, in conjunction with the provincial government, took the decision to develop Hainan Island as a first-class South Sea Island tourist destination. The upscale makeover of Hainan, including the makeover of Sanya, has begun, though it is only in its initial phase. Part of the upscale makeover of the island will be to build a series of casinos, augmented with Las Vegas or Monaco style hotels, replete with vast auditoriums for international class entertainment; if the Hainan Island of 2008 was backpacker friendly, the Hainan Island of 2013 will be private yacht friendly.

Currently, the island is in the first stages of its upscale makeover (the best of Sanya's star-rated hotels already incorporte upscale features such as indoor jacuzzi and swimming pools – some of them fed by naturally occuring hot springs – and first-class restaurants serving a Chinese and international menu), meaning that Sanya still has plenty of inexpensive and laid-back venues that appeal to the backpacker and others on a budget, but if you belong to this category and are thinking of visiting Hainan Island – and perhaps Sanya in particular – then you would be advised to make that journey soon, otherwise the island's upscale makeover will have been completed by the time you get there, and your budgeted week-long stay, for economic reasons, might have to be reduced to a weekend stay at best.

This is not to say that Hainan Island and its beautiful seaside resort cities, such as the city of Sanya, will become wall-to-wall asphalt and concrete; quite the opposite – there will always be plenty of natural, or undeveloped, shoreline to supplement the already developed parts of Hainan's coves and bays, though the upscale makeover of the existing developed parts of Hainan's shoreline will be somewhat expanded, so as to achieve the optimal mix between the natural and the developed that the high-end consumer of tropical island vacations has come to expect.

Sanya's inarguably most attractive feature is its sandy beaches that are distributed among the city's three bays: Sanya, Yalong and Dadong, though for the best swimming and sunbathing, Sanya Bay and Yalong Bay excel, yet Dadong Bay is closest to the downtown area and thus most trafficked. Wuzhizhou Island in Sanya Bay is the ideal venue for all manner of water sports, from windsurfing to scuba diving to kayaking. Sanya was a favorite haunt of the former Chinese leader, Mao Zedung, himself an avid swimmer. It was also very popular with the Russian elite during the Soviet era, which earned the city the title of the "Vladivostok of the East". Sanya is now increasingly popular with tourists from Japan and Korea.

In fact, to this day, one meets a myriad of signs round about the city that are written in Russian, and some of the service personnel also still speak the lingo, and for these reasons perhaps, plus Hainan's proximity to Russia's Pacific coast, numerous Russians still frequent Sanya.

Thanks to the city's deepened harbor, Sanya Harbor is now a major port of call for deluxe cruise ships that ply the waters between China, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indochina – and in some cases cruise ships that commute between China, Malaysia and Australia – depositing hundreds of adventurous tourists from all over the world in Sanya on a regular basis, so one never knows who one might be sitting next to when sipping a martini in a bar in Sanya.

With its warm, tropical climate, its coconut tree lined avenues, its deep blue waters and its golden beaches, Sanya is often compared to tourist destinations such as Hawaii or Bali. For some reason (perhaps by design!), the state and local governments have decided to keep the international fast-food chains off of Hainan Island, where the island's own seafood rules (if one can speak of fast food in Sanya, then the seafood stalls along Sanya Harbor is the only category that qualifies), but where one can also enjoy all of the other highlights of Hainan Cuisine, which is inspired chiefly by the Min (Fujian) and Yue (Guangdong) Cuisine schools.

But being an all-encompassing tourist resort still, with over 80 star-rated hotels, Sanya also offers the dishes of Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou Cuisines, including traditional as well as modern dishes prepared on the basis of water fowl, beef, pork, and lamb. If you are Muslim you can find so-called halal food here as well (think: "kosher", but for Muslims instead of Jews), and most of the better restaurants also serve vegetarian dishes. Note that Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan and Sichuan Cuisines all belong to the Eight Great Cuisine Schools of China. Note also that the absence of international fast-food chains on Hainan has made it easier for the state and local governments to opt for the upscale tourism market here, but perhaps things were planned that way...

Just as with the U.S. resort state of Florida, the weather on Hainan Island is best when it is worst everywhere else. That is, the best time to visit Hainan Island is from autumn to spring (the heat and humidity of summer do not invite outdoor activity, but once the upscale makeover of Sanya is complete, the indoor pools of the larger hotels combined with the casinos will make Hainan Island – and Sanya in particular – an attractive, year round getaway). Another plus for Sanya is its fresh air; the city's air quality was rated as the world's second best by the World Health Organization in 1995, and with little or no industrial production on Hainan Island, little has changed since to reduce Sanya's excellent air quality.

Sanya's main tourist attractions, apart from its beaches – such as the premier beach at Yalong Bay – and its soon to come casinos are: Luhuitou Park; Wuzhizhou Island; Monkey Island (home to a colony of some 1800 free-roaming Macaque monkeys); Western Island; Mount Nanshan Resort Area (Nanshan Temple/ Longevity Park/ and Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy statue – Guanyin is also the patron saint, as it were, of all seafarers); Nantian Hot Springs; and the Tianya Haijiao ("End of the Earth") Resort Area. Sanya's less touristy, or perhaps more family oriented, attractions include: the Tiger and Crocodile Center; the Butterfly Museum; the Shell Aquarium; Daxiao Dongtian (Fairy Caves); and the Li, Hui and Miao ethnic minority villages in the mountains north of Sanya.

Sanya's main festivals are: the traditional Chinese New Year Festival , or Spring Festival, as the Chinese refer to it, which takes place at the end of January and stretches into February, depending on the Lunar Calendar; the Sanyuesan Festival ( Funianfu , in the language of the ethnic Li, this being the main annual festival of the Li people of Hainan), held in early March (depending on the exact Lunar Calendar date), which is a lovers festival, or Chinese Valentine's Day, as it were; the Longevity Festival, held at Mount Nanshan in September; and the International Wedding Festival, which takes place at the famous seashore boulders at Tianya Haijiao in November.

If you would like to shop for some interesting bargains in Sanya with a local, ethnic flavor (don't forget that there are about 20 ethnic groups living here), then you shouldn't miss the night market at Sanya Harbor – the atmospherics alone are worth a visit, even if you aren't looking to purchase a souvenir, though it could be difficult to resist buying at the very least a tasteful piece of jewelry made either of pearls or of Hainan Island coral – or both.

As indicated above, Sanya has numerous star-rated hotels, among the high end of which can be found Hiltons, Marriotts, Ritz-Carltons and Sheratons. As something unique, the city also has a limited number of Tree Houses that can be rented for an unforgettable, Tarzan & Jane experience, though don't expect the chimps to bring fresh coconuts and pineapples to your breakfast table, though both abound (and Macaques abound as well, albeit, on Monkey Island). The Dadong Bay harbor area comes alive at night with discotheques, while its sidewalk cafés are busy all day long and into late evening. If you are into quiet strolls along the shore, then there are lesser trafficked bays where the bathing and swimming pressure is not so pronounced.

State and local government, as indicated, are in the process of transforming Hainan Island into an upscale tourist market. Part of that plan is the expansion of harbor facilities at Sanya to accomodate greater numbers of private yachts. If golf is one of your pasttimes, then Sanya has a string of nearby golf clubs for your pleasure, all with 18-hole courses: Yalong Bay Golf Club, Sun Valley Golf Club, Sanya International Golf Club and the Luhuitou Golf Club – you can of course opt for a 9-hole game if you prefer it.

The development plans that are under way on Hainan Island does not mean that the island will be transformed into a getaway for the jet-set crowd only; the idea is to keep Hainan, including favorite cities like Sanya, family friendly as well. For now, there is even room for backpackers, but if you belong to this crowd, you had better get cracking – or shall we say, packing, for the window of opportunity is rapidly closing!

Begin your visit to Sanya by taking in some culture by dropping by Nanshan Temple . Situated 40 kilometres out of the city centre, it is a day trip but it is a worthwhile one even for those who aren’t fervently passionate about religious points of interest.

Occupying 66 acres of land between the base of Nanshan Mountain and the turquoise waters of the South China Sea, it is the biggest temple built since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China .

Fascinating Attractions

Opened in 1998, it was built to honour the 2,000 year anniversary of the arrival of Buddhism in China. Check out the Golden Jade Guanyin Statue first; regarded by the government as a national treasure of China, this 13 foot high Buddha statue is coated in gold, silver, and is studded with countless gemstones, including 120 carats worth of diamonds imported from South Africa .

However, we think you’ll find the 354-foot high statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva to be the most stunning sight on the premises. Situated on a terrace jutting out into the South China Sea, its grandeur amidst stunning tropical scenery makes this place one of the more Instagrammable spots in the Sanya area.

Let’s be real, though – you probably came here to hit the beach. While there are many stunning specimens in Sanya city and the surrounding region, Yalong Bay is one of best jewels in its crown. With crystal clear water, droopy palms, over 7.5 kilometres of sand, and a year-round average air temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, it is easily one of the most relaxing places to be on a visit to China.

Whether you decide to rest under a palapa, rent a jet ski to go for a rip amidst the warm surf, or sample fresh, grilled seafood that is brought to you by beachfront vendors, you are sure to have a leisurely day when you spend it at Yalong Bay.

More Attractions

When you are ready to do some exploring away from the beach, make time in your schedule for a visit to Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park . Set in the rainforest in the hills behind Sanya, it mixes a hillside eco-resort with mountain trails which give day visitors the chance to experience 133 different plant species, 30 species of mammal, 100 kinds of birds, and 60 different varieties of amphibians.

When you aren’t spotting these creatures, there are a number of adrenaline activities you can take part in. From crossing rope bridges to riding a zip line high above the jungle, these diversions will help make your day up here a fun one.

As wonderful as the beaches are in the Sanya area, they don’t hold a candle to the ones that can be found in the outlying islands. Of these, Wuzhizhou Island is by far the most popular, as its bleach-white sands and coral reefs make it a hit among foreigners and domestic tourists alike.

Avoid it during peak tourist times (weekends, winter, and holidays), as this place has a tendency to get packed during these times. Moreover, there is a designated swimming area for safety reasons, so keep this in mind before travelling here to avoid disappointment.

While the full 40km or so of coastline dedicated to tourism is usually referred to as Sanya, the region is actually made up of three distinct zones. Sanya Bay is home to the bustling city center and a long stretch of beach and hotels aimed at locals and mainland holidaymakers. Busy, cheerful Dadonghai Bay, about 3km southeast, beyond the Luhuitou Peninsula (鹿回头岭, Lùhuítóu Lǐng), is where most foreign travelers stay. A further 15km east, at exclusive Yalong Bay, the beach is first-rate, as is the line of plush international resorts.

We started with a standard tour offered and then tailor made it to our needs. As we added and subtracted cities nothing was ever a problem and communication from Kelly was fast and efficient and informative. Internal flights, trains, connections, pick ups, private car, driver and guides for just two of us. We looked around and settled in Joy travel due to their incredible efficiency and sense of them wanting to give us the best experience for the best price. From Beijing to Zhangjiajie to Guilin and Yangzhou followed by a quick one day flip in Xian and then home. Even leaving my cell phone at Beijing airport was easily resolved after contacting Kelly who had the company take collection and had it courierd to Xian. A crisis was seamlessly averted. Pickups and guides and drivers eased our trip into a busy yet relaxed and informative holiday and tour. Spring time in China was spectacular. The guides were experienced and unbelievably helpful and informative. My understanding of China in so many aspects was broadened. A self tour or big bus tour would not have given us this experience. I could happily recommend them to anyone wanting to have a personalised experience. Read more Written April 8, 2024

  • Harry H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A truly wonderful day out! Sasha was a brilliant guide! We chose a day tour that included the terracotta warriors, the Xi’an city wall, and the muslim quarter. It ended up being just us two on the tour which meant Sasha was perfectly adaptable and accomodating to us. First we visited the warriors, about one hour away from the city. Sasha knows her history extremely well and was able to answer any and all of my questions about China’s long impressive culture and history on the way. When we arrived she gave us a very comprehensive tour of the warriors museum with a complete history from their creation to their excavation. Afterwards, she recommended a show for us to see at a theatre on the way back where the audience rotates between six different stages. If she recommends this to you, make sure you do it! It was the most impressive theatre show I have ever seen in my life. Real wolves, camels, insanely high production value. It was incredible. Afterwards we went to the City Wall, where Sasha was able to give us a lesson on its remarkable history and aid us in renting a bicycle. Definitely recommend this too! A very enjoyable experience. We then went to the muslim quarter to explore it’s bustling street food scene, though we were not hungry and wanted to go to the Great Mosque instead. Sasha even knew the incredible history and customs of Xi’an’s local muslim population too and guided us around the Mosque despite it not being apart of the itinerary. I would definitely recommend a tour with Sasha. It is obvious she is a deeply passionate and knowledgeable Xi’an local who genuinely cares about sharing her city’s culture and history with foreigners. Plus, she speaks perfect english and gave us many recommendations for the rest of our time in this city. Thank you Sasha for a wonderful day out in Xi’an. Read more Written March 28, 2024

13 Wonderful Things to Do in Sanya | Ultimate Travel Guide

  • July 25, 2023

Sanya! Known as the “Hawaii of the East,” this tropical city, perched on the southernmost tip of China’s Hainan island, is a hidden-gem unbeknownst to a lot of travelers outside of  China . It’s a place where crystalline turquoise waters meet pristine beaches, where ancient cultural traditions coexist with modern sophistication.

Sanya was my first stop before beginning my trip around Southeast Asia where I went from  Indonesia ,  Malaysia ,  Myanmar  and  Laos .

In this guide, walk with me as we learn about the history, the must-visit spots, the best beaches, exciting things to do, and some handy travel tips that will help you make the most out of your trip to Sanya.

Sanya Travel Guide & Things to Do

History of Sanya

The story of Sanya stretches back more than two thousand years, to the Qin Dynasty (221 – 206 BC). In those ancient times, the area was known as Yazhou, which means “cliff state” in Chinese, probably due to the dramatic mountainous landscapes found there.

It was a far-flung part of the empire, serving as a place of exile for disgraced officials. It might be hard to imagine now, but the beautiful Sanya of today was once seen as a remote, undesirable location!

During the Sui Dynasty (581 – 618 AD), the region underwent development with the establishment of Yazhou County. As centuries rolled by, it continued to evolve, gradually becoming an important trading port on the South China Sea route. It interacted with countries in Southeast Asia, becoming a melting pot of different cultures.

The city’s modern history began in the 20th century. The name “Sanya” was officially adopted in 1912, during the early years of the Republic of China. In 1954, the central government upgraded Sanya from a county to a city, recognizing its growing significance.

Sanya’s transformation into a popular resort city began in the 1980s, following China’s economic reform. The government decided to tap into Sanya’s tropical appeal and turn it into a leading tourist destination. Infrastructure improvements were made, luxurious hotels sprang up, and a vibrant beach culture developed.

Today, Sanya blends its historical charm with modern appeal, with its ancient temples and traditional villages juxtaposed against sleek skyscrapers and world-class resorts.

What to Know Before Going to China

China can be quite different from what we’re used to, especially when it comes to internet access and cultural norms. Here’s what you should know before you go:

Internet Restrictions: China has a pretty tight grip on the internet. Popular sites and apps like Google, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Wikipedia are blocked in mainland China. This restriction, often referred to as the “Great Firewall,” also extends to most western media outlets and some email services. To access these, you’ll need a Virtual Private Network (VPN) set up on your devices before you arrive.

WeChat is King: In China, almost everything is done through an app called WeChat. It’s a bit like Facebook, WhatsApp, Uber, and Venmo all rolled into one. People use it to chat, call taxis, order food, pay for items in shops, and more. It’s worth downloading and getting familiar with before your trip.

Cashless Society: While cash is accepted, digital payment platforms like WeChat Pay and Alipay are extremely popular in China. From fancy restaurants to street food vendors, everyone prefers digital payments. However, setting these up without a Chinese bank account can be tricky.

Language Barrier: English is not widely spoken in China, even in some hotels and restaurants. It’s a good idea to learn a few basic phrases in Mandarin and to have a translation app handy. Also, remember to have important addresses written in Chinese characters to show taxi drivers.

Tipping is not customary: Unlike many western countries, tipping is not common practice in China and can sometimes be seen as insulting.

Travel Insurance: It’s always important to have good  travel insurance  that covers health issues while abroad. China has excellent medical facilities, but treatment can be expensive, and communication in English can be challenging.

Best Places to Visit in Sanya

Sanya Phoenix Island at Night

1. Phoenix Island

Phoenix Island dubbed as the “The Oriental  Dubai ,” is a man-made marvel that can’t be missed. This artificial archipelago, located in Sanya Bay, has swiftly become a symbol of Sanya’s innovation and prosperity.

There’s an array of things you can do here. Admire the futuristic architecture of the island’s luxury resorts and residential buildings, the tallest of which light up spectacularly at night, creating a dazzling cityscape against the backdrop of the sea. It’s a sight to behold, and it’s no surprise that it has become a favorite spot for photographers and Instagrammers.

Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, soak up the sun on the island’s private beach, or have a relaxing swim in the clear waters. For foodies, the island’s restaurants offer a plethora of delectable cuisines, from local Chinese dishes to international fare.

If you’re after an upscale shopping experience, Phoenix Island’s boutiques and designer stores have you covered. There’s something for every shopper for sure!

One of the highlights of the island is the undersea observatory, where you can explore the marine life of Sanya Bay without getting wet. It’s a magical experience that will delight both kids and adults.

Guan Yin of Nanshan

2. Nanshan Buddhism Culture Park

The Nanshan Buddhism Culture Park is definitely the highlight of visiting Sanya for me.

The park is absolutely sprawling and covers an impressive 50 sq km (20 sq mi), housing several attractions that celebrate  Mahayana Buddhism  and  Chinese culture . It’s big enough that there are trams inside that go to various locations around the area.

Let’s start with the revered temples. Visit the Nanshan Temple, a grand spectacle with its ornate carvings, vibrant colors, and serene courtyards. A great spot to witness Chinese religious customs, the temple often has monks chanting and performing rites, creating an authentic atmosphere.

There are valleys, waterfalls, ponds, and hiking trails around and it’ll certainly take you the whole day to explore every corner of the park, that is if you even can!

The park’s standout feature is undoubtedly the awe-inspiring, 108 m (354 ft) statue of a three-faced  Guan Yin , the Goddess of Mercy. Standing on a man-made island, this three-faced statue is one of the tallest in the world and can be seen from miles away. I recommend going down to the coast and sitting by the rocks, during sunset the place is just fabulous.

For a cultural learning experience, you can also go to the Buddhism Cultural Exhibition Center. It features a vast collection of Buddhist scriptures, artifacts, and art that highlight  Buddhism’s  profound impact on Chinese society.

Looking for a bit of tranquility? Find it in the Peaceful Life Garden, home to charming Chinese-style buildings, water features, and an abundance of flora. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful walk or meditation.

Feeling peckish? Head to one of the park’s many vegetarian restaurants. From hot pots to noodle dishes, you’ll get to taste some of the most flavorful and nutritious meals.

To make the most of your visit, consider hiring a guide. The park is enormous, and a guide can provide valuable insights into the symbolism and cultural significance of the various sites. You can get one through  here !

3. Sanya Romance Park

Known locally as the “Romance of the Li and Miao,” this park is a celebration of the ethnic diversity, vibrant folklore, and natural beauty of Hainan Island.

As you enter the park, you’ll be welcomed by an impressive archway that sets the tone for what’s to come: an exploration of the island’s rich culture and history, with a bit of theatrical flair.

Don’t miss the live-action show “Romance of the Li and Miao,” which is nothing short of epic. Performed on the world’s largest water stage, this spectacle combines music, dance, and drama to depict the love story between the heroes of the Li and Miao ethnic groups. It’s a visual feast you won’t want to miss.

The park also offers a 4D theatre and a variety of exhilarating rides. From roller coasters to water rides, there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Make sure to explore the recreated ethnic villages too. Here, you can learn about the traditional ways of life of the Li and Miao people, watch artisans at work, and even try your hand at some local crafts. Or better yet, you can visit Binglang Ethnic Village for an even more authentic experience.

Bing Lang Gu Village

4. Binglang Ethnic Village

Want to get a first-hand experience of Hainan’s rich ethnic culture? Well, a visit to Bing Lang Gu Ethnic Village is just the ticket. Tucked away between the lush Yanoda Rainforest and the tranquil South China Sea, Bing Lang Gu offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditions and lifestyles of Hainan’s indigenous Li and Miao tribes.

The village is more of an open-air museum, showcasing the authentic culture of these ethnic groups. As you wander through the bamboo-lined paths of the village, you’ll come across traditional stilt houses made of bamboo and wood. These homes, beautifully decorated with folk art, give you a sense of how the Li and Miao people have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

It’s quite similar to  Hong Kong ‘s traditional  Tai O Fishing village .

Bing Lang Gu is alive with cultural activities. Engage in traditional Li and Miao handcraft sessions like pottery making or brocade weaving.

If you’re lucky, you might even get to witness the traditional Li techniques of making fire using wood drills or extracting fibers from tree barks to make clothing.

The cultural experience doesn’t stop there. Every day, the village hosts vibrant folk dance and music performances. The Li and Miao people, dressed in their traditional attire, showcase their distinctive dance and music forms. These performances, filled with color and energy, are a treat to watch.

5. Aquaventure Water Park

When it’s time to swap historical sights for a dose of adrenaline-pumping fun, Aquaventure Water Park is the place to go. Nestled in the heart of Sanya’s resort district, this world-class water park is all about creating unforgettable memories.

From high-speed water slides that’ll have you screaming with joy to lazy rivers for a more relaxed float, this park ensures you’re spoilt for choice.

One of the must-try attractions is the Leap of Faith, a nearly-vertical slide that plunges riders down an impressive height and through a tunnel surrounded by a shark-filled lagoon. Talk about an adrenaline rush! And in case your wondering, yes,  Dubai  also has an Aquaventure Water Park with the same Leap of Faith attraction.

For the little ones, there’s Splashers, a water playground filled with kid-friendly slides, climbing frames, and tipping buckets. It’s a safe, fun-filled zone where they can make a splash and have a blast.

And let’s not forget about the park’s beautiful private beach. When you’re ready for a break from the water action, you can lounge on the sandy beach, soak up the sun, and enjoy the stunning views of the South China Sea.

Best Beaches in Sanya

6. yalong bay.

Known as the “Oriental Hawaii,” Yalong Bay is often hailed as the most beautiful beach in Sanya. Located about 25 km (15 mi) southeast of the city center, this 7.5 km (4.6 mi) stretch of beach is acclaimed for its pristine white sands and turquoise waters.

This was the beach where  I spent a whole day in  and met fabulous friends who I’m still in touch with to this day!

The bay’s clear, calm waters make it a haven for people called to the sea. I really enjoyed just floating on the water and just being  present in the moment .

There are also plenty of restaurants and beach bars where you can enjoy a refreshing cocktail and some fresh, local seafood while overlooking the scenic bay. There were also some fruit vendors around the beach area which was really perfect!

Despite it’s popularity, Yalong Bay had a very laid-back vibe as well and the crowds were not that much at all.

Sanya Bay

7. Sanya Bay

When it comes to beaches in Sanya, Sanya Bay takes the cake for being one of the most serene and picturesque. Stretching over 20 km (12 mi), this expansive beach is renowned for its soft golden sands, calm azure waters, and breathtaking views of the sunset.

One of the greatest things about Sanya Bay is its relative tranquility compared to some of the other more crowded beaches. It’s the perfect place to lie back on a sun lounger with a good book and build sandcastles with the kids.

The water here is relatively shallow and calm, making it ideal for swimming. If you’re craving a bit of adventure, water sports like jet-skiing and parasailing are also available.

After the sun sets, Sanya Bay transforms into a vibrant hotspot. The coconut tree-lined promenade becomes a hub of activity with street food vendors offering a variety of local delicacies and performers adding to the lively atmosphere.

8. Dadonghai Beach

Just a stone’s throw away from Sanya’s downtown, Dadonghai Beach offers a delightful slice of coastal bliss. This 2.3 km (1.4 mi) crescent-shaped beach is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life.

Don your snorkeling gear and dive into the bay’s underwater world to meet colorful tropical fish, starfish, and maybe even a playful sea turtle. For those who prefer staying above water, paddleboarding and sailing are popular activities too.

The beach is framed by lush, green hills, offering scenic hiking trails that reward you with panoramic views of the bay. And for the ultimate tropical vibe, the beach is lined with towering palm trees, under which you’ll find numerous loungers for a relaxing respite from the sun.

Just behind the beach, you’ll find a lively area teeming with restaurants, bars, and shops.

9. Haitang Bay

Away from the hustle and bustle of Sanya’s more tourist-laden spots lies Haitang Bay, an idyllic stretch of coastline that offers a tranquil retreat. Stretching for an impressive 22 km (13 mi), Haitang Bay is the longest beach in Sanya, and its natural beauty is nothing short of stunning.

Haitang Bay’s soft, ivory sand and shimmering, emerald waters invite relaxation. Its less crowded nature compared to other Sanya beaches adds to its charm, giving you plenty of space to relax and just be.

But don’t be fooled by its serene facade; Haitang Bay has a lot to offer beyond its natural allure. For one, it’s a well-known spot for windsurfing, with the calm waters and steady breezes making for ideal conditions.

Haitang Bay also holds the title for being home to the world’s largest duty-free shopping complex, Sanya Duty-Free Shopping Complex. This shopping paradise is a must-visit for shopaholics!

Top Things to Do in Sanya

Luhuitou Park, Sanya, Hainan

10. Hike up Luhuitou Park

Perched on a hill on the outskirts of Sanya, Luhuitou Park is a tranquil oasis that combines natural beauty with rich folklore. The name “Luhuitou” translates to “a deer turning its head back,” stemming from a romantic legend of a hunter and a fairy turned deer.

A visit to Luhuitou Park is not complete without a walk up to its highest point. Although the climb might be a bit challenging, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Sanya city, Phoenix Island, and the sea. It’s a perfect spot for sunset viewing, with the sky morphing into a riot of colors that leave a lasting impression.

Don’t worry as the hike is not that difficult and you’ll see plenty of interesting sights along the way, with the views getting better every step of the way. There’s also a tram service going to the top if you’re really not up for it.

As you wander along its leafy paths, you’ll come across  monkeys  playfully swinging from the trees, deer grazing on the grass, and colorful butterflies fluttering by.

Strangely enough, there was also a random dance show by some  Russian  performers at the peak while I was there.

11. Chase Waterfalls at Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone

The Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone offers an enthralling, nature-packed adventure that takes you into the heart of Sanya’s tropical landscape.

Start your journey by embarking on a trek through the verdant rainforest. The park has well-established trails that meander through unique tropical plants, under towering trees, and past gentle streams. Listen for the call of exotic birds, rustling leaves, and the subtle sounds of nature as you wander through this peaceful haven.

Waterfalls are a highlight of the Yanoda Rainforest, with several beautiful cascades dotted throughout the park. The soothing sound of water tumbling over rocks, combined with the serene surroundings, creates an almost magical atmosphere.

While you’re here, don’t miss the opportunity to learn about the rich biodiversity of Hainan Island. The Tropical Plant Garden is home to over 1,700 types of plants!

Suspended Bridge in Yalong Park

12. Walk on a Glass Bridge at Yalong Bay Tropic Paradise Forest Park

Yalong Bay Tropic Paradise Forest Park is like stepping into a painting. With its lush greenery, colorful flowers, and chirping birds, it’s a lively display of Sanya’s rich natural beauty. If you’re a nature lover, this park will quickly find a special place in your heart.

The best way to explore the park is by taking a leisurely stroll on the winding trails. Each trail takes you through a different part of the park, showing off its diversity.

We were also able to sample some of the local tea here with explanations from the artisans.

If you want to go full Indiana Jones, you can also go on a zip-line that will take you all the way across the entire park, it’s a long and amazing ride.

One of the highlights for us was definitely crossing the Suspended Glass Bridge. This thrilling walkway hangs high above the rainforest floor, offering unparalleled views of the greenery below and the clear sky above!

13. Go Scuba-diving at Wuzhizhou Island

Wuzhizhou Island, now that’s a spot you can’t miss when you’re in Sanya. It’s like a slice of paradise.

The island is known for its excellent diving spots. The coral reefs here are home to a variety of marine life, and the water is so clear that you’ll have a great view of the underwater world!

Now, if you want a break from all the water activities, you can take a walk around the island. It’s not too big, and the paths are easy to follow. There are some pretty cool spots to check out, like Lover’s Bridge, and you’ll find plenty of picture-perfect views along the way.

You can join an amazing tour to Wuzhizhou Island right  over here !

Where to Stay in Sanya

Sanya is home to one of the finest establishments in the country but that’s not to say that everything has to be expensive. I was staying at a hostel first before moving to a hotel. Here are just some of my recommendations:

Best Hotels in Sanya

  • Grand Hyatt Sanya Haitang Bay Resort and Spa – a beachfront hotel offering three themed swimming pools, the Huan Spa, and a fully equipped fitness center for renewal and well-being. The modern-style guestrooms and suites include amenities like air conditioning, bathtubs, and free toiletries. This is where we stayed on the other half of our trip and it was divine!
  • JW Mariott Hotel Sanya  – beautifully situated at the base of Luhuitou, surrounded by lush tropical gardens and overlooking an ocean-facing grass lawn and a protected coral reef. The hotel offers stunning views of the ocean and mountains.
  • Wingate by Wyndham Sanya  – offers an outdoor pool, 2 children’s pools, and water sports facilities, with a scenic setting facing Sanya Harbor. The hotel provides a restaurant, bar, and free WiFi. The rooms and suites are air-conditioned and soundproofed, featuring amenities such as satellite TV and private bathrooms with walk-in rain showers.

Best Hostels in Sanya

  • Sanya Backpacker International Youth Hostel  – this is where I stayed during the first half of the trip. The dorms were quiet at night, with people coming and going sometimes but it was all in all a pleasant experience. I was able to meet some friends and relax in the morning with some tea. It’s near the city center and I was able to walk all the way to Luhuitou, to the beach and back. It has shared showers and air-conditioned rooms.
  • Summer Tree Inn (The Captain’s Hostel)  – offers a garden, private parking, a shared lounge, and a terrace. The on-site restaurant serves American and Chinese dishes, and there’s also a bar for you to enjoy. All guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a dishwasher, minibar, coffee machine, shower, hairdryer, and a desk.

The hostel provides clean, quiet, and safe accommodation suitable for backpackers and families, with Western-style soft mattresses and free fresh beach towels on request.

How to Get Around Sanya

Getting around Sanya is pretty straightforward and you’ve got plenty of options depending on your comfort and budget.

  • Taxi : Taxis are easily available and can take you directly to your destination. During peak times, you might have to wait a bit. It’s always a good idea to have your destination written in Chinese as not all drivers speak English.
  • Bus : They’re the most economical option and they cover all the major tourist spots. They might be slower than taxis, but it’s a cool way to soak in the local vibe, I know I did! Chinese buses are really something else. It’s how I met new friends on the way to Yalong Bay!
  • Ferry : For places like Wuzhizhou Island, you’ll need to take a ferry. They’re quite frequent, just the schedule and you’ll be good to go.
  • Tours : Some of the places are quite far from the city center, especially the Rainforest Parks or the Nanshan Buddhist Complex, you can also book a tour to avoid all the hassle, you can find tours in Sanya  here .

How to Stay Safe in Sanya

Sanya is a very safe city, it’s a resort meant for tourist first and foremost so safety is pretty tight. That being said, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places like markets. Don’t leave your bags unattended at the beaches too.

The beaches in Sanya are generally safe as well, there are designated areas for swimming so avoid going too far out into the sea.

And speaking of safety, a key aspect of any trip is having the right travel insurance. It’s the kind of thing you hope you never have to use, but when you do need it, you’ll be glad you have it. That’s why I recommend  Safety Wing , a reliable and comprehensive travel insurance provider that I’ve personally used on my travels.

Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or a long-term trip, Safety Wing has got you covered.

Best Time to Visit Sanya

If you’re a sun-seeker, then you’ll love Sanya’s tropical climate. It’s sunny and warm throughout the year!

The peak tourist season is during the winter months, from December to February . The weather is fantastic at this time, with plenty of sunshine and little rainfall. Temperatures typically hover around a pleasant 25°C (77°F) , which is perfect for lounging on the beach or exploring the city. But do keep in mind that this is also when Sanya is at its busiest and prices for hotels and flights tend to be higher.

For a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder season, which is from March to May and October to November . The temperatures during these months are generally warm, ranging from 26°C – 28°C (79°F – 82°F) , and there’s less rainfall compared to the summer months.

If you want to avoid the crowds and don’t mind a bit of rain, then the off-peak season, which is from June to September , could be a good option. This is Sanya’s rainy season, and although there might be occasional showers, they usually don’t last long. The temperatures during this time are a bit higher, ranging from 28°C – 29°C (82°F – 84°F) .

What to Pack For Sanya

Sun Protection: Sanya can get quite sunny, so make sure to pack a good sunblock with high SPF. A sun hat and UV protection sunglasses can also help shield you from the rays.

Travel Adapter: China uses type A, C, and I outlets, so you may need a universal adapter depending on where you’re coming from.

Waterproof Bag: A waterproof bag can come in handy to protect your belongings during water activities or unexpected rain showers.

Medicine: I don’t know why it was just me but I got terrible  food poisoning in Sanya , my stomach was torn asunder and I was almost down for more than a day. Just in case, I do recommend bringing some stomach medicine at the last, maybe I’m just not used to Chinese food.

There are more things to do in Sanya than most people realilise!

Sanya is a popular tourist area for Chinese domestic tourists as well as international travellers . Famous for its exotic beaches and serene coastlines, there are also lots of things to do in Sanya other than lazying around on the beach!

For those of you who follow my travel  stories on Instagram , you will know that I like to mix things up on my travels. Lazy beach days are great, but so are zip lines through the forest, playing with monkeys and experiencing the serenity of Buddhist temples! And these are just a few of the cool things to do in Sanya…. read on to find out more about the best things to do in Sanya…

Where is Sanya?

Tourism in sanya, why you should visit sanya, the downsides of sanya, is sanya really like hawaii, the best time of year to visit sanya, downtown sanya, dadonghai beach, haitang bay, clear water bay, walk on a bridge made of glass yanoda rainforest cultural tourism zone, play with monkeys on nanwan monkey island, zip line through the forest at yalong bay tropic paradise forest park, take a boat to wuzhizhou island, swim with sharks at the lost chambers aquarium, eat at an underwater restaurant, splash out at the aquaventure waterpark, have a beach day, visit the southernmost tip of china, live the luxury life on a yacht, watch a show at romance park, take a walk at luhuitou peak park, explore nanshan cultural tourism zone, enjoy the scenery at sanya orchid world, take a trip to phoenix island, have some playtime at haichang fantasy town, relax at the hot springs, learn about the local hainan culture on a walking tour, quad bike along the beach, take part in your favourite water sports, grab some duty-free bargains, beach barbacoa @ edition, casa mia italian restaurant, baan rim nam, sanya dolphin sports bar & grill, goji kitchen, bread street kitchen and bar, things to do in sanya: to conclude.

Before we get into the details about the best things to do in Sanya, lets first take a look at the geography of the place.

If you have never travelled to China , then you probably haven’t heard of Sanya. However, within China, it is pretty well known- it’s up there with  Hangzhou – another place that is very popular with domestic tourists, but that most people outside of China have not heard of.

Sanya is located in the far south of China on Hainan Island. Hainan Island is the southernmost part of China.

The latitude of 18° 15′ N, places Sanya at roughly the same distance from the equator as Hawaii (the real Hawaii).

Hainan Island is only a short distance (just over 600km) from Vietnam. It sits just below Hanoi.

It takes around three hours to fly to Sanya from Shanghai and about four hours to fly to Sanya from Beijing.

The island of Hainan is bigger than you might think. The island is 13,650 mi² in size. The capital city, Haikou is more than a two hour drive from Sanya.

Sanya is found in the very south of Hainan Island.

Sanya has its own airport, which is pretty convenient, although flights in and out of the airport are almost running at full capacity, meaning that  tourism development and planning  is somewhat restricted until an expansion has been completed. Not to worry though, there are still plenty of flights to get you there!

The easiest way to get from the airport to your hotel is by private car. If you have the DiDi app you can use that. Or you can  book a car in advance here .

Sanya is well connected to the rest of the island by ground transport. The most convenient way to travel is to hire a car or to hire a driver. Note- if you want to drive in China you must have a Chinese drivers license.

There are also buses and trains available, but these are less convenient.

Sanya is not the place that it was just a few short years ago. In fact, I was flabbergasted when a friend had watched my Instagram stories and replied asking about the prostitutes! What prostitutes, I responded?! It seems the Sanya that I experienced was very different from the Sanya that she had experienced a decade or more ago…

So what has changed?

Well, pretty much everything.

As with most of China, Sanya has been developed at a rapid rate. It is not uncommon for a floor a week to be built on high-rise building in China, and Sanya has proven to be no exception of this impressive infrastructural development. And there are many more things to do in Sanya now then there used to be.

Chinese tourists have become the world’s biggest market for  outbound tourism  in recent years. Increases is disposable income, personal freedoms and new found desires to travel the world have resulted in many nearby destinations reaping the rewards- Thailand and Bali being particular favourites.

It makes perfect sense that China would actually want to entice some of their tourists to stay  in  the country; allowing for the country to retain some of the  economic benefits of tourism . Knowing that many tourists are in search of sun, sand and sea, China could see the potential in Sanya- their own tropical paradise island.

Over the past decade or so, significant tourism development has occurred on the island of Hainan. Quad bikes now frequent the beaches, forests have been turned into tourist attractions and a whole bunch of monkeys have been relocated to a nearby island! There are a range of things to do in Sanya that were not there just a few short years ago.

Sanya has been transformed as a tourist destination. A place that was once viewed as being somewhat ‘seedy’ and having an underestimated  sex tourism  scene, is now a well-renowned beach destination, featuring a large number of high-end resorts and hotels and there are many things to do in Sanya now

Most recently, the island has been declared as a duty-free zone and limits on spending have been increased to a whopping US$10,000! I expect this will further boost the tourism industry in Sanya and encourage further visitors and visitor spending.

When I refer to Sanya, in actual fact, I am referring to Sanya and the surrounding areas. Sanya itself is the city at the tip of the island, but the nearby coastal areas and resorts are also worth a visit. There are many things to do in Sanya in these areas.

The main tourist areas of Sanya are:

Sanya is extremely popular with Chinese  domestic tourists . It is also popular with expats living in China and people who are travelling within China.

To me, Sanya lies somewhere between Tel Aviv and Koh Samui.

Sanya doesn’t quite have the retro vibes of Thailand or the cheap prices of Vietnam. But it does have a certain level of class about it. Here you will find all the best names in luxury- from the Atlantis Hotel to the Gucci store in the duty-free mall.

Large resort hotels line the coastline , all with their own private beaches. These resorts have everything you could want- restaurants, entertainment, pools, bars, shops, arcades, kid’s clubs and more. If it’s a relaxing beach break that you’re looking for, Sanya has it covered! And if you don’t want to hang out at the beach all day there are plenty of things to do in Sanya too.

The academic in me can’t tell you all of the great things about Sanya without also informing you of some of the downsides. Now, I am not suggesting that these things prevent you from visiting Sanya (because you absolutely should go, but it is good to be prepared!

Sanya isn’t self-catering friendly. Whilst I cannot speak for every hotel, our apartment, came with an empty kitchen- not even a working cooker. We got it working in the end, but my toddler was less than impressed with her egg in a cup that we served her in the first day before we were delivered some crockery!

If you are reading this article, then the chances are that you are either an expat living in China or you are travelling through China researching the best things to do in Sanya. So, you are probably already aware that cleanliness standards in China are typically not as high as they would be in other parts of the world. While you will probably have your hotel room cleaned each day, you only need to read the reviews on  Trip Advisor  to see that many hotels suffer from a lack of cleaning.

I spent MANY hours reading reviews and ruling out places that I thought looked good because of complaints about cleaning. Check out my list of recommended accommodations options further down this post for my recommendations. Some of these are places I have personally stayed or they are places that my fellow expats have recommended to me…. and if there is anything that I have learnt living in China, it is that recommendations are invaluable!

My last complaint is the lack of Western catering options. OK, OK, I know- I am in China. And I know that I should probably just embrace the Chinese food. But there are only so many meals in the week that the kids are prepared to eat rice…. I personally found that finding Western restaurants wasn’t so easy… so I have listed a few for you at the end of this post (and eating here was one of my favourite things to do in Sanya)- every little helps, right?

The short answer?

The long answer?

Well, kind of….

things to do in Sanya

Hawaii (the real Hawaii) is known for its lush beaches and clear white waters. The beaches in Sanya are nice, but these do differ depending on which area you are staying in- so don’t take having super soft sand and pristine waters on your doorstep as a given!

Hawaii is also known for its volcanic landscape. At first I thought that there were no volcanoes on Hainan Island, but it turns out I was wrong. Apparently the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark is home to a number of extinct volcanoes and a crater. It is 118 square kilometres in size and is located a couple of hours north of Sanya.

So really, I didn’t feel like I was in Hawaii. BUT I do see the similarities, kind of…

One of the reasons that Sanya is an appealing tourist destination is because it has year-round sunshine, meaning that the various things to do in Sanya are accessible year-round.

The daily average temperature is 25 °C (77 °F) in Sanya and the annual rainfall is 1,279mm (50 inches). Most of this rain falls between June-October, when it is rainy season. However, don’t be put off- rain is generally limited to short but heavy evening/nigh time downpours- you can still enjoy the sunshine around the poolside most days.

Generally, us non-Chinese folk will want to spend time basking up the sunshine on the beach or around the pool whilst in Sanya. Whilst the weather is pleasant all year round, I personally wouldn’t take my jeans off for anything below about 25 degrees C. For this reason, I recommend visiting Sanya during the summer months, when the average temperate is a lovely 26degrees C.

You can also visit Sanya during the rest of the year. During spring and autumn temperatures are likely to be in the early twenties- so nice, but you might want to pack a cardigan for the evenings.

In winter, temperatures hover at around twenty degrees C. Winter is short here, lasting only around two months in December and January.

Another positive of visiting Sanya is the air quality. Because of its southern location and wind direction, Sanya has some of cleanest air in all of China!

Where to stay in Sanya

As I mentioned before, choosing where to stay in Sanya is a pretty big deal, bigger than in other places I have travelled to.

When I started my search for accommodation options in Sanya I was initially impressed by the prices. Wow- a 5 star resort for 500rmb a night- what a steal! But as I continued my search I was quickly made aware of why these prices were low.

Trip Advisor reviews showed me that the majority of these hotels were old, run down and dirty. Water didn’t run clean, lights didn’t work, doors didn’t close. There was mould up the walls and dirt in the pool…. need I go on?

BUT there WERE nice hotels with excellent reviews! However, our budget didn’t quite allow for us to stay there- maybe next time!

So what were we to do?

Well, after many hours of research, I found us a place that I thought was pretty good, with good reviews close to the things to do in Sanya that we were interested in. It wasn’t perfect, but I was prepared for that- so it was fine.

To save you going through the same endurance (OMG this was literally one of the toughest searches for accommodation I have ever done!), I have outlined some of the best hotels in Sanya for you below. I have also described what the areas are like, to help you to decide where is the best place for you to stay.

Each of the links you find below are to booking.com. I find this to be the best website to book my accommodation through when travelling in China. They have Western customer service options should you encounter any issues, an excellent cancellation policy, and you don’t have to pay until you arrive; giving you the options to pay with a foreign credit card or using Alipay or WeChat.

Before my trip to Sanya, everyone told me that Yalong Bay was the place to be. And there are plenty of things to do in Sanya that are found here.

Yalong Bay is home to the best beaches in Sanya- they really are gorgeous! The bay offers luxury hotels as well as some that are a bit more modest. It also offers seclusion, which is great if you just want to get away from it all.

However, having the best of anything, usually comes at a price…. This is the most expensive part of Sanya to stay in, and it is quite far from many attractions and transport links.

Accommodation in Yalong Bay: My picks

Luxury:  The  The St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort  offers ultimate luxury! With butler service, a 1200ft infinity pool and its own cinema, this resort has everything you could want and more!

Modest:  I’ve heard GREAT things about the  Sanya Marriott Yalong Bay Resort & Spa . With a beach, tropical gardens, multiple pools, kids clubs and some great restaurants, you really can’t go wrong!

Something different:  The villas at  Pullman Sanya Yalong Bay Villas & Resort  are pretty special- you can enjoy the incredible views from your very own private pool and hot tub! There is also direct access to the golf course, so if you’re into golf- this is the place for you!

Sanya Bay is nice. The beaches are nice and the sunsets are to die for! BUT I was categorically told not to stay here by several different people…. why you ask? Sandflies!

Apparently there can be a lot of sandflies in Sanya Bay, especially during the spring and summer months. Sandflies bite and can be very unpleasant. Everyone I know who stayed here advised me against for this reason. There might be some things to do in Sanya here, but the flies put me off.

Sanya map with scenic spots, hotels and main streets

Having said that, you can get some pretty good deals in Sanya Bay. This is where you will find many of the budget-friendly accommodation options including hostels. The location is also pretty convenient.

Accommodation in Sanya Bay: My picks

Luxury:   Wyndham Sanya Bay  this hotel is top notch, with lovely pools, a spa a gym and a hot spring bath!

Modest:  The  Holiday Inn Resort  offers some of your favourite home comforts and a standard of service that is welcoming and familiar. The pool is great too!

Something different : A number of  modern apartments  have begun to spring up in the Sanya Bay Area. These offer excellent value for money and come equipped with lounge area, kitchen and bedroom(s).

sanya tour guide

Downtown Sanya is the most built up area with lots of things to do in Sanya. Here you will find the traditional Chinese hustle and bustle of its life and many of your favourite amenities. There are even a couple of supermarkets selling Western foods nearby.

To me, Downtown Sanya was the least desirable area to stay. I personally don’t want to be staying in the city whilst on a beach holiday, but if that’s your thing then you will probably like it!

Downtown Sanya is home to a variety of  types of accommodation  and you can find some of the best bargains and low-cost options here.

Accommodation in Downtown Sanya: My picks

Luxury:  The  Sanya Rock Platinum Sea View Hotel  offers excellent value for money for a five star hotel! The prices are low and the service is high- what more could you want?

Modest:  The  Holiday Sanya City Center  has excellent customer reviews. They are particularly renowned for their tours, which is great if you want to get out and about.

Something different:  The  Sanya Bay Mountain and Sea Apartment  is situated in a nice resort that has a great location. It’s close to the beach, has great mountains views and is also near to many of the local tourist attractions.

Dadonghai Beach is one of the most popular areas to stay in Sanya.

The Sanya Dadonghai scenic area gives you the best of both worlds: nature and city. The 2.9km long beach here is gorgeous and you are surrounded by picturesque hills. All the while, Downtown Sanya is only 4km down the road.

Accommodation in Dadonghai Beach: My picks

Luxury:  The   InterContinental Sanya Resort   has 5 outdoor pools, an Intercontinental Spa, tennis courts, a gym, a ballroom and 6 restaurants and bars- ranging from Hunan cuisine, seafood to classic western food, from homemade beer to BBQ dinner buffet.

Modest:  The  Sanya Sun Seaview Apartment  offers great value for money as well as privacy. You can make your own breakfast and sit on the balcony enjoying the views- it is lush!

Something different:  The  Banyan Tree Sanya  features an elegant collection of villas with a private pool and a tropical garden. I can’t think of anything better than relaxing with a glass of fine wine on the cabana whilst watching the sun set.

things to do in Sanya

During our visit to Sanya we stayed in Haitang Bay.

Haitang Bay is one of the newer tourism areas (although everywhere is relatively new!). The bay is about 45 minutes up the coast from Downtown Sanya, and therefore it is a bit of a journey if you want to go anywhere.

But if you are looking for a luxury resort, this is your place! Haitang Bay stretches over a whopping 42.8km of coastline ! Along the coast are numerous high-end resorts, all offering resort-hotel facilities- once you’re in, there is no need to leave if you don’t want to!

However, be warned that the sea here is not safe for swimming. There are dangerous undercurrents. The beach is great, but you need to keep your feet on dry sand if you choose to stay in Haitang Bay!

There are a few cool things to do in Sanya based here too, such as the aquarium that I discuss shortly.

Accommodation in Haitang Bay: My picks

Luxury:  Famous for its sister in Dubai, the  Atlantis Sanya  offers the ultimate luxury in Sanya! With a world-famous aquarium and waterpark, along with many excellent restaurants, bars and shops, you should visit this hotel- even if it’s just for a visit!

Modest:  Friends of mine stayed at the  Grand Hyatt Sanya Haitang Bay Resort and Spa  and LOVED it. The three themes pools are great it is conveniently located next to some handy shops, restaurants and fast food outlets, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Something different:  We stayed in the  Elnob Seaview Aparthotel Hai Tang Bay Sanya  during our visit to Haitang Bay. The apartments were large and clean and the location was great- it was right next to the Atlantis so we could enjoy the amenities over there without having to pay the price tag for a room- winning!

sanya tour guide

If you’re looking for a relatively unspoilt beach, then head to Clear Water Bay. This area offers several new and exclusive luxury developments that would make for a brilliant beach escape- but they do come with a price tag!

Clear Water Bay is situated between Downtown Sanya and Haitang Bay. The waters here are known for being crystal clear, and it is said that they remain so for at a depth of at least 12m!

The downside to staying here is that it is a bit of a journey to get anyway. But I guess that’s the price that you pay for a quiet and unspoilt beach!

Accommodation in Clear Water Bay: My picks

Luxury:  The  Narada Resort & Spa Perfume Bay Sanya  offers world-class service. The private villas with their own pools are large and clean and the views are incredible!

Modest:  The Westin Blue Bay Resort & Spa  is a nice resort with good levels of service. And the pool is HUGE!

Something different:  Another friend of mine stayed at the  Sanya Xiangshui Bay Marriott Resort & Spa . This hotel is great for big kids who love rock climbing and waterslides! The sunsets here are to die for!

Things to do in Sanya

OK, lets get down to the crux of it- I know that I can laze around the pool and chill out on the beach, but what other things to do in Sanya are there?

Well actually, there are plenty of things to do in Sanya!

Travelling in China isn’t always easy. Most people do not speak English and the Chinese people are very much a ‘group tour’ population . So Sanya, like other places in China, isn’t really geared up for independent travel.

Having said that, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible to travel independently in China, because you absolutely can! The difficulty is finding out the information that you need to know…

Just like when we travelled to  Qiandao Lake , famous for its 1000 islets, we were completely in the dark when we visited Sanya. There are very few (if any) English websites that give you the information you need. In fact, travelling in China reminds me of when I went backpacking back in 2011. At that time the Internet wasn’t nearly as helpful as it is now and you very much relied on word of mouth and personal recommendations to get you to the best places.

The list that I have compiled for you below about the things to do in Sanya is a collation of my own personal experiences, recommendations from friends of mine and reviews that I have read on the Internet (which are few and far between).

So, without further ado, I present to you, the best things to do in Sanya-

things to do in Sanya

This was one of the most unique things to do in Sanya. Visiting Yanoda rainforest was one of the highlights of my trip, and I would definitely recommend it as one of the best things to do in Sanya.

You can easily spend a day or two here exploring the rainforest area and doing the activities. Or you can come for a few hours, like we did.

Located about 45 minuted from Yalong Bay, Yanoda is China’s only tropical rainforest. It is home to 25% of China’s mammal diversity and 33% of its bird diversity.

Development of this area is still underway. At the time of writing there was a forest zip line, hiking trails, the famous glass bridge and rock climbing. I know that other activities are also planned and a hotel is being built too.

We loved the glass bridge- walking across here is without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Sanya! The views were spectacular and the fake cracking noises at the end were hilarious!

If you want to visit Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone then you can either take a DiDi, hire a private car or book a tour. If you want to make the most out of your visit then  booking a tour, like this one , is probably worthwhile because the area is huge and the best bits are not necessarily easy to find!

Note- there is a height restriction of 1.2metres to ride the zip line, so this is not for young children. After loving the zip line at Sentosa in Singapore, Isla was very disappointed not to be allowed to ride.

things to do in Sanya

Nanwan Monkey Island is a state-protected nature reserve. The island features more than 2500 macaque monkeys, many of which have become domesticated.

You can reach the island easily by DiDi or private car. It is in the Lingshui area. It took us around 40 minutes to reach the island from Haitang Bay.

I keep referring to it as an island, but actually it’s not. The nature reserve is actually on the Nanwan peninsula, which can be reached by cable car.

Taking the cable car is part of the experience, and it was one of my daughter’s favourite things to do in Sanya! The cable car is the longest oversea ropeway, which is 2138 meters long and travels at the speed of 6 meters per second.

Once you arrive in the reserve you are free to wander around at your leisure.

There are some monkey shows that are put on throughout the day, but I fundamentally disagree with this- it is unethical and cruel, so we obviously did not attend any shows.

The reserve was a nice area with lots of biological diversity. The monkeys seemed happy, which is nice to see, and which is sadly not always the case at  tourist attractions  which involve animals. My girls loved watching how the monkeys played together.

Nanwan Monkey Island is open everyday 8am-5pm and the ticket price is 160rmb. Small kids go free and bigger kids are half price. For my kids, this was one of the best things to do in Sanya.

Note- When you come to Nanwan Monkey island be careful not to get too close to the monkeys and do not take any food with you. The monkeys are wild animals and they may bite. If they suspect that you have food in your bag they may climb on you. Monkeys often have rabies, so if you are bitten you will need to go straight to the hospital for a series of rabies shots- don’t take the risk and keep your distance.

If adventure tourism is your thing, then this is one of the best things to do in Sanya.

Located in Yalong Bay, the Tropic Paradise Park is known as one of the best things to do in the area.

At Yalong Bay Tropic Paradise Forest Park there are bridges and zip lines, and the views both within the forest and beyond are incredible.

A glass walkway (impressive, but not as good as the one at Yanoda Rainforest) gives you the chance to look down at the beautiful green forest, and there are places to get refreshments here too.

With orchid gardens, a swinging bridge and more, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what to do first here.

Be sure to wear good shoes, and be aware that it does get pretty humid here!

Wuzhizhou Island is a small iIslet off the coast of Sanya. It is famed for its crystal clear water, sandy beach and water sports including scuba diving, snorkelling, and the parachute sailing.

You can reach the island by boat in about 10 minutes from Haitang Bay and about 30 minutes from Yalong Bay.

Many tourists choose to visit this island, too many actually. In the peak season up to 20,000 people are permitted to visit the tiny 1.48 square kilometers sized island each day. Many people complain that the island is crowded and  overtourism  makes for an unpleasant experience.

However, if you choose to visit after 5pm or during the off-peak period, the island is a great place to visit! The best way to avoid the crowds is to  book a private tour, like this one , it costs a bit more if your group size is small, but is totally worth it, nobody wants to be fighting for a space on the beach!

There are over 2700 wild plants non the islet, including Spindle Tree Fern and Dragon Tree, the oldest plant on the earth. The lush rainforest combined with the calming ocean waves is a wonderful place to relax and be at one with nature, as long as you can escape the crowds!

things to do in Sanya

A visit to the Atlantis Hotel is a MUST for anyone coming to Sanya, if for no other reason than it is home to The Lost Chambers Aquarium. In fact, this is one of the most popular things to do in Sanya.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be staying in the hotel to visit the attractions at the Atlantis, just make sure that you use the visitor entrance.

A visit to The Lost Chambers Aquarium is one of the best things to do in Sanya. The aquarium is home to more than 86,000 sea creatures, spanning 280 different species.

You can simply take a visit here, or you can opt to take advantage of the special experiences on offer. You can pay to swim with beluga whales, dive with hammerhead sharks, play with star fish, go snorkelling or take a boat tour.

You can book your tickets on the  Atlantis website . I recommend avoiding late afternoon and wet and rainy days because the aquarium can get extremely busy.

sanya tour guide

Ossiano Underwater Restaurant, also found in the Atlantis Hotel, is one of the most unique things to do in Sanya.

The restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing diners to see into the famous Atlantis Aquarium. You can watch the enormous sting rays, turtles, sharks and other marine life swim past as you eat your meal, it is a very cool experience!

The menu is predominantly seafood, which is no surprise. The black cod fish and Ossiano Signature Seafood Pasta are said to be particularly good. And the Wandering Earth dessert is divine!

It is recommended that you book a table in advance, because the restaurant does get very busy as this is one of the most popular things to do in Sanya. Ossiano Underwater Restaurant is open for lunch between 11.30am-2.30pm and dinner between 5.30pm-9.30pm.

The restaurant is quite pricy, but I think that is no surprise, given that it is a super posh underwater restaurant! The set menu costs 1988rmb.

Visit the website  to book a table and to see the full men.

sanya tour guide

The Aquaventure Waterpark is Asia’s largest waterpark and one of the favourite things to do in Sanya.

The rides here are second-to-none and are rated as some of the best in the world. You can wizz past sharks whilst on the water slides, freefall from 24m on Speedloop and go surfing in the wave pool.

We decided not to visit the Aquaventure Waterpark on our visit to Sanya because the rides appear to be more geared towards big kids (our kids were 1 and 3). But I will admit, I do feel slightly disappointed that I didn’t get my adrenaline rush on the Tornedo Storm!

You can  book your tickets on the website  or turn up and pay at the door. Tickets are 358rmb each.

things to do in Sanya

There are a few different beaches in the Sanya area.

Sanya Bay is probably the biggest and most well known; it is directly south of Sanya City, and it has a 22 km beach with a peninsula at the east side. Xidao and Dongdao islands are here, and you might see dolphins!

Other beaches in the area are:

  • Houhai Bay, which is great for surfing and snorkelling
  • Baifu Bay, which is greta for sunbathing and SCUBA diving
  • Dadonghai Beach, which is one of China’s cleanest beaches
  • Haitang Bay, which has amazing views and a large beach

All of these beaches can get busy, so head out early and find the perfect spot.

There are eateries and shops in the vicinity of all the beaches in this area, too.

Tianya Haijiao is considered to be the southernmost point of China, meaning people love to visit!

Here you can see the famous Rocks of Sun and Moon. These are essentially two boulders- the sun is the ‘husband’ and the moon is the ‘wife’. The boulders appear to be intertwined, but they are in fact completely separate.

There is also the Southern Heaven Rock This is another boulder – this time with a poem inscribed on the top. If cultural tourism is your thing, this is one of the best things to do in Sanya.

If you  follow me on social media , you will know that I am a big advocate for shopping local. Using local transport providers is one of the ways that you can help to play your part and maximise the positive  economic impacts of tourism .

In Sanya, there is a locally-owned and managed company who offer you the opportunity to charter or rent a yacht or a sailing boat.

This makes for a great way to escape the crowds and do something a little bit different with your day. You can also rest-assured that you are doing your part for the local economy!

You can book your own  private yacht or sailing boat here .

If you’re looking for some evening entertainment, then Romance Park is the place to go. Despite the precarious-sounding name, the nightly show is very highly rated and the  Trip Advisor reviews  are excellent and it is one of the most popular things to do in Sanya.

The show is hosted in the Sanya Qianguqing Grand Theater, found inside the theme park. The theme park itself is a bit strange, but worth a quick look around. Both the theme park and the show are focussed on Sanya’s Local Han culture , Li and Miao minority culture, and folk cultures.

The shows book up fast, especially in the peak season, so I recommend  booking online .

Luhuitou Peak Park is one of downtown Sanya’s most well-known attractions and one of the most popular things to do in Sanya.

With lovely paths to walk and statues to discover, this is a great place to come to catch the sunset. From the top of the park you can see out across the city and the bays – making it one of the most enjoyable things to do in Sanya.

You might see monkeys towards the top, which is exciting for children, and the famous deer statue is a must-see too.

Be sure to pack your camera if you visit the park, as you’ll be spoilt when it comes to gorgeous photo opportunities to help you remember your trip.

Open from 7.30 am until 11.30 pm, there is plenty of time to explore the park. Entry is free for children in 1.2 metres and adults aged 70+ while children measuring 1.2 – 1.4 metres and adults aged 60-69 can expect to pay RMB 25. In off season, adult entry is RMB 35 while in peak season, adults will pay RMB 42 for entry. You can also plan ahead by  booking a tour online .

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone is an incredible unique tourist attraction and another one of the most popular things to do in Sanya. A large-scale eco-cultural tourism zone themed entirely around Buddhism and ecology, it makes for a great day out when looking for things to do in Sanya.

There is a temple, two gardens, a bay, a valley, a Buddha statue and a gold and jade Kwan-Yin statue, which has won a Guinness World Record. Come here if you want sunshine and nature – sandy beaches, colourful flowers and sparkling seas – as well as a chance at spiritual connection!

Entry is free for children under 1.2 metres, and adults aged over 70. For children measuring 1.2 – 1.4 metres, and adults aged between 60 and 69, entry is RMB 73. Adult entry is RMB 145 in peak season and RMB 121 in off season. Nanshan is open between 8.00 am and 5.30 pm year round.

Sanya Orchid World is the world’s largest orchid themed park, located in the Tianya District. This is one of the most unusual things to do in Sanya!

Another example of ecotourism , there are around 2 million orchids there with around 3,000 species. 300 of these are rare wild species! There are 8 scene zones within the park, which covers around 26 hectares.

Designed like a classic Chinese garden, this is one of the most beautiful things to do in Sanya – if you are interested in flowers and nature, you can’t miss visiting the park. Again, you absolutely can’t forget your camera…

Referred to as the ‘Oriental Dubai’, Phoenix Island is actually two islands. These islands are some of the most interesting things to do in Sanya.

The islands are artificial, and located off Sanya Bay. The western island is still being constructed, but the eastern island is already wildly popular.

There are eight sections, including a 7-star hotel, a conference centre, a cruise ship harbour, shopping streets, a theme park and more.

Visiting Phoenix Island is one of the best things to do in Sanya. Accessible by ferry, it makes for a great day out if you’ve had your fill of nature, fresh air and the outdoors. Go shopping, admire the hundreds of yachts at the marina, go out for dinner and so much more. This is a great sprinkling of luxury for your trip to Sanya!

Haichang Fantasy Town is a theme park designed around the ocean, with 8 ‘bays’ and a huge variety of things to do.

Open 24 hours a day, Haichang Fantasy Town has 13 main attractions and two theatres with so much to see and do. Jump on the Sanya Eye and enjoy incredible views of the city and coastline (you’ll be 88 metres in the air) then discover everything else the theme park has to offer.

From simulators to pirate ship rides to bars and restaurants, there is something for everyone and you won’t get bored. There are traditional African dancers, mermaid shows, rides, nightclubs, bars and so much more.

Visiting Haichang Fantasy Town makes for a fun day out and is one of the many cool things to do in Sanya. This is one of the best things to do in Sanya for kids.

This is one of the favourite things to do in Sanya amongst divers.

Whilst Sanya is no  Blue Hole , it does have its fair share of marine life for you to admire. The area is especially known for its angelfish and clownfish.

Dadonghai provides visitors with Barrier Reef Diving, Pirate Bar Diving Club, and Global Diving Base. It also offers  snorkelling trips with a guide and all equipment included .

About 330 yards (300 meters) east along the beach is the Seashore Park. Standing on the top of the small hill inside the park, you have a panoramic view of the beach and the vast water. On the east side of the beach there is an Amusement Park with thrilling activities such as a Pirate Boat, merry-go-round and bungee jumping

If relaxation and aromatherapy is high on your list, then there is no place better than the Nantian Hot Springs. This is for sure one of the best things to do in Sanya for relaxation.

These thermal pools, located within a spa resort, provide you with the opportunity to relax in the natural hot springs. There are several pools of different sizes and some have fish that will eat the dead skin on your feet. There is also a playground.

You can  book a private tour to the Nantian Hot Springs with Trip Advisor here.

If you enjoy  cultural tourism , and you are interested in learning a bit more about the Hainese culture, then you should definitely  sign up for the two hour walking tour .

The tour takes you through the streets of Sanya where you can see how the local people live. You will visit markets and some of the most historical buildings in the area. It’s fascinating!

sanya tour guide

Over the past few years more and more businesses have popped up in Sanya. From banana boat rides to quad biking along the sand, there are lots of ways to fill your day.

Many people will walk the beachfront looking for people to buy their quad bike tours. You can ride with a guide or on your own.

Whilst quad biking can be really fun, I personally found them a bit annoying- I prefer to listen to the sounds of the waves and my kids playing in the sand rather than a noisy engine driving up and down the beach! Nonetheless, this is one of the most popular things to do in Sanya.

sanya tour guide

Watersports is one of the most popular things to do in Sanya. There are several different water sports activities that you can take part in in Sanya.

The busiest area for water sports is Yalong Bay, so if this is something that interests you, you may prefer to stay in that area.

things to do in Sanya

Earlier this year the Chinese Government announced that the spending limit on duty-free items was increased to a whopping US$10,000! The intention is that this is another way to entice visitors to Sanya- to grab some duty-free bargains.

The Haitang Bay Duty Free Shopping Complex is the best place for shopping in Sanya. It is a large shopping mall, complete with all of the designer brands you could want, making this one of the favourite things to do in Sanya.

The building architecture is pretty impressive too!

The best Western restaurants in Sanya

As I mentioned earlier, if I had any complaints about our trip to Sanya, it was not being able to find many Western eateries. If you are anything like me one of your favourite things to do in Sanya will be eating your favourite foods.

Here are a few that I came across that I would recommend-

Located at the Sanya Edition hotel, this is a fine dining restaurant serving seafood and barbecue with an Asian twist as well as vegetarian and vegan options.

Their coconut rice and papaya salad both come highly recommended!

It is on the beach, meaning you can dine barefoot and feel at one with the sea and sand; eating at sunset is a real treat here, too.

Alcohol is served here, the restaurant has WiFi and it accepts international credit cards.

This restaurant is perfect for a fancy, romantic evening in Sanya!

Nothing like a good pizza when in China, right? If you ewantg something a little bit classier than Pizza Hut then Casa Mia is your place.

There is a wide selection of choices and the seafood linguine is said to be one of the best! The pizzas are great too.

The view of Sanya Bay is a great treat. You’ll get a nice breeze on the terrace, and it’s an all-round nice experience if eating out is one of the things to do in Sanya on your list.

This is actually a Thai restaurant, but again it is really highly recommended by locals and visitors.

It is located at the Anantara Resort, all dark wood and mirrors and pure elegance.

Curried crab is on offer here, and it has been praised a lot!

Sit on the patio if the weather allows for it, and enjoy friendly service and delicious food.

If you want to experience something a bit western, head here.

This is one of the few places in China where cider is actually on the menu, and it offers American and European dishes with vegetarian options.

There are TVs showing sports, indoor & outdoor seating, free WiFi and more. They also have live music here!

Something sophisticated? Goji Kitchen is a great option, with a warm ambience and plenty of authentic local food on the menu.

There are local-inspired cocktails, and tasting them is one of the most fun things to do in Sanya.

Breakfast here is highly recommended, and it is reasonably priced too.

Sit outside on the deck and enjoy your food and drink in the Sanya sunshine.

The Bread Street Kitchen and Bar is one of Gordan Ramsey’s restaurants, found in the Atlantis Hotel. Whilst most Chinese people probably don’t have a clue who he is, if you come from Europe then you probably do!

I personally love Gordan’s restaurants. I had a burger and it was delicious. The kids meals were great too and the service was second-to-none! This was one of my favourite things to do in Sanya.

Despite many people thinking that Sanya is just a ‘lie on the beach’ destination, there are actually lots of things to do in Sanya. I hope that this article on the things to do in Sanya has been helpful to you and that you have an enjoyable trip.

Generally, there are top 4 areas to stay in Sanya, namely Haitang Bay, Dadonghai Beach, Yalong Bay and Sanya Beach. You can plan based on your likeness and feature of each area.

Haitang Bay: This are is the best one if you are seeking for a quiet environment and higher standards of hotel facilities and services, since many high-end hotel brands has been established there not so long. So new modern and chic style can be contented. Beach there is beautiful and clean for your personal release. Besides, Wuzhizhou Island and the famous DFS Sanya are quite close from there for your easy access. Many bars are also easy to find. But, it is a little from the city center. Hotels like Edition, InterContinental, Shangri-La, Sofitel, Atlantis, Grand Hyatt, Rosewood, and so forth can be booked there at Haitang Bay.

Dadonghai Beach: This is the classical accommodating area for foreign visitors since many years ago because of its early development. It is also the garden and strolling place for local Sanya citizens as it is close to the city center. Besides, its close to the harbour and also convenient for shopping, eating and drinking. Many international famous hotel brands can be found there, such as Banyan Tree, Mandarin Oriental, Marriott, InterContinental, etc.

Yalong Bay: It is also popular with the beautiful Yalong Bay beach and forest park. Sightseeing there is a large advantage. Hotels suitable for family travelers are abundant there and mainly provide good and full amenities. You can lots of luxury hotels like Marriott, Hilton, MGM, Sheraton, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Park Hyatt, etc.

Sanya Bay: It is the accommodation area quite close to the city center and you can walk to the san beach within minutes from the hotel. Staying there is not only convenient but also enables you to enjoy the well-known charming sunset and the large spread of coconut trees with a romantic flavor. Besides, entertainment facilities and food places are well allocated. However, the sand is not so good as other top beaches. Hotels like Pullman, Crowne Plaza, Sheraton, etc. can be found there.

Hotel rate varies a lot in Sanya. For luxury hotels, the prices can be 800~2000 CNY/night and more. For comfort and 4 star hotels, the prices can be 500~700 CNY/night. For other budget hotels, hostels and inns, the prices can be 50-400 CNY/night. However, all prices change a lot during different months.

Booking your accommodation in advance is always recommended for Sanya. Usually 1 month in advance is recommended. But for travel peak season (usually from October to the next March, and the National Holiday, China Lunar Year Holiday, New Year Holiday, etc.), 2 to 3 months in advance is better as the prices rise sharply and can be 3 to 4 times higher than the shoulder season ones.

Wuzhizhou Island has only a few accommodation choices, particularly higher standard and boutique hotels. Since Haitang Bay is so close to Wuzhizhou Island, it is also recommended stay at the better hotels at Haitang Bay.
