Tulamben: An unassuming dive town with mind-blowing marine life

A quaint fishing village located on the northeast coast of Bali, Tulamben lures travelers from around the world to explore the fascinating world that lies beneath the ocean’s surface. Tulamben offers a remarkable scuba opportunities for divers of all experience levels. Just 25 meters offshore lies the wreck of the WWII USAT Liberty cargo ship, an underwater wonderland and one of Bali’s best dive sites.  In addition to the Liberty Wreck, there are numerous other dive sites teeming with sealife in or near Tulamben Bay. Divers can expect to see a diverse range of marine life including corals, sponges, sea turtles, sharks, squids, octopus, rare macrolife, starfish, eels, manta rays and of course, hundreds of species of fish.

Liberty Wreck

A historic artifact revitalized into one of the richest marine environments in the world. Resting 3-30m deep, the Liberty is one of the most accessible wreck dives.

Batu Kelebit

A rock cluster accessible by a quick jakung ride, this site features a stunning coral reef that drops steeply to depths of 30-50m and is an excellent place to spot larger pelagics.

An impressive underwater cliffside created by the eruption of Mount Agung. Vibrant corals, gorgonians, and sponges cover this wall that drops down to 70m.

A paradise for macro lovers and underwater photographers, this “muck diving” site is teeming with fascinating and rare little critters.

A shallow reef abounding with colorful corals and rare marine life. This site is a popular destination for underwater photographers and macro-life enthusiasts.

A sloping reef canvassed with corals, gorgonians, and sponges. Located just past Batu Kelebit, this quieter dive site is a good place to spot sharks.

Marine Life

Menjangan Island is an ideal spot for scuba diving in Bali. Its pristine turquoise waters provide an incredible underwater experience, and the aquamarine surroundings are breathtaking. The abundance of shallow coral reefs and marine life makes it a paradise for any diver, no matter their experience level. You can thank the development of West Bali National Park in 1917 for preserving the area’s natural beauty.

There are a variety of dives to explore, such as shallow reefs, deep wall dives, and drift dives, ensuring that divers of all abilities can find something suitable. The healthy marine life preserves on Menjangan Island provide excellent opportunities to see dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and vibrant reef fish, while the occasional whale shark or hammerhead has been known to visit.

If you want access to the area, you’ll have to pay a small fee to enter the Nature Preserves Park, but once you’re in, there’s no limit to the incredible scuba diving Bali has to offer.

2. Seraya Secrets

Have you ever considered “muck diving” in Bali? Muck diving is a type of scuba diving that focuses on exploring the bottom of the ocean floor, where you might find unusual and unique marine creatures.

It may sound unappealing, but muck diving has quickly become one of the most popular activities for Bali scuba divers. The Seraya Secrets dive site, located on the east coast of Bali near Tulamben, is an ideal spot for muck diving and has become a hotspot for underwater photographers, thanks to its abundant coral gardens and fascinating marine life.

Seraya Secrets provides plenty of opportunities to spot unique creatures, such as cuttlefish, seahorses, ghost pipefish, and blue ribbon eels. It is also a great spot for night dives when some of the more elusive nocturnal creatures come out to play.

3. Tulamben’s USAT Liberty Shipwreck

The wreck of the USAT Liberty Ship is one of the most popular dive sites in Bali. This shallow dive site is located off the northeastern coast of Bali, on a black sand beach called Tulamben Bay.

This wreck is perfect for scuba divers of all levels, with depths ranging from 5 to 30 meters. The wreck is now home to an array of vibrant and colorful corals, sponges, and invertebrates. You can also spot some larger marine life inhabiting the sunken vessel, such as giant trevally, bumphead parrotfish, and sea turtles.

When you are there, make sure to visit with the locals of Tulamben village, who are more than happy to give you a history lesson about the USAT Liberty Shipwreck.

Another village located on the east coast of Bali is Amed. This small fishing village is home to an array of colorful coral gardens, and it’s a great spot for the best scuba diving in Bali if you want to avoid the tourist crowds.

Amed Diving site offers some of the most beautiful deep and shallow dives in the area, with depths ranging from 5 to 30 meters. There are also plenty of opportunities for wreck diving and night dives, giving divers a chance to explore the vibrant marine life that inhabits this area.

If you want to experience the diversity of Bali’s underwater world, then Amed is definitely worth a visit. A short ride on a traditional jukung will bring you to some of the most stunning dive sites in Bali. The locals of Amed often use these boats to access some of the more remote dive sites, so it’s definitely worth taking a ride.

5. Nusa Penida

At the top of many scuba divers’ lists of must-see sites in Bali is Nusa Penida . Located just off the southeastern coast of Bali, this small island is home to many stunning dive sites, including Crystal Bay and Manta Point.

The waters around Nusa Penida are some of the most pristine in Indonesia, and they offer a unique blend of shallow coral gardens and deep drop-offs, making it the perfect spot for divers of all levels.

Crystal Bay is the most popular dive site in the area and provides a chance to get up close and personal with magnificent manta rays. Manta Point is another popular dive site where you can explore a vibrant coral garden filled with colorful fish and unique creatures.

No matter which dive site you choose, Manta Point and Crystal Bay at Nusa Penida is definitely unforgettable destination for scuba divers visiting Bali!

6. Nusa Penida Bat Cave

For an entirely different experience, venture to the Nusa Penida Bat Cave. Located near the village of Toyopakeh, this isn’t a dive for the faint of heart. At 30 meters deep, this is an intermediate dive best suited to experienced divers.

This cave is home to a large colony of bats and numerous species of marine life and is one of the few sites where you can get a close-up view of hundreds of bats in their natural habitat.

This dive is an experience like no other and definitely not for everyone, but if you are up for a challenge, then it’s worth giving it a try! Some brave divers have even reported seeing whitetip and blacktip sharks in the dark depths of the Bat Cave.

7. Drop-off at Tulamben

If you are looking for a thrilling dive, then a drop-off at Tulamben is definitely one you should consider. This dive site offers a unique combination of deep and shallow dives, making it perfect for advanced divers looking to explore the area’s depths.

The drop-off is located just off the coast of Padang Bai, and it features sharp drop-offs, coral gardens, and other underwater features. The currents at the site create perfect conditions for drift dives, allowing divers to explore further into deeper waters.

With depths of 40 meters, advanced divers may see schools of colorful fish and large pelagic species, such as barracuda and tuna. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a shark or two!  Add this to your visit to the wreck dive at USAT Liberty Shipwreck, and you’ll have an unforgettable scuba diving experience in Bali.

8. Gilimanuk’s Secret Bay

Another popular muck diving location in Bali can be found at Gilimanuk’s Secret Bay. This bay is located on the western side of Bali, and it offers a variety of macro critters for divers to explore. Menjangan Island is also not too far away, and this provides a great opportunity to combine the two locations into one dive trip.

With depths around 9 meters, this is an ideal location for beginner divers and experienced muckdivers alike. The black sands and dark waters of Secret Bay make for perfect conditions for spotting critters such as nudibranchs, frogfish, flatworms, and many others. You never know what strange and wonderful creatures you may find in this bay, making it a dive site that’s never the same twice.

9. Mangrove, Nusa Lembongan

For a unique and captivating diving experience, scuba divers should head to the mangroves of Nusa Lembongan. Located just off Bali’s coast, this is one of Indonesia’s most beautiful and unusual dive sites.

Drift diving is the best way to truly take in the wonders of this dive site. This method of diving will allow you to slowly drift through the mangroves, taking in all their beauty. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful coral trees, swaying gently with the current and providing a home for an abundance of marine life.

You may see brilliant colorful fish grazing on the mangrove roots, moray eels lurking in crevices, and even the occasional seahorse. It can be a truly mesmerizing experience, so make sure to add this dive site to your list when you visit Bali!

10. Shark Point, Padang Bai

Another popular dive spot in Bali is Shark Point in Padang Bai. This dive site is the perfect location for spotting various marine life, including sharks! The area is known to be home to many species of shark, including the occasional whale shark, making it an excellent spot for any aspiring underwater photographer.

The waters around Shark Point offer excellent visibility and depths that range to 25 meters. Here, you can expect to find healthy coral gardens, a plethora of fish, and maybe even some manta rays or turtles.

If you’re lucky enough, you may get the chance to spot some of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. It’s an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after your dive is over!

11. Jetty, Padang Bai

Another hot spot for scuba divers in Bali is the jetty at Padang Bai. This area offers an exciting mix of muck and reef diving, making it perfect for both beginner and experienced divers.

The jetty provides a great opportunity to explore some of the island’s lesser-known sites. As coral has built up around the jetty itself, it is now home to a variety of vibrant marine life. You’ll have the chance to spot walls of colorful corals and fish, along with some occasional sightings of small sharks and rays!

You may find that specific parts of the jetty are closed off to divers due to ongoing construction, so always be sure to check with a local dive center before making any plans.

12.  Blue Corner, Nusa Lembongan

The last stop on our list of the best dive sites in Bali is Blue Corner, located off the coast of Nusa Lembongan. This site is considered to be one of the most thrilling dive sites in all of Indonesia, and for good reason!

Here you will find depths that reach up to 40 meters, making it a great spot to catch a glimpse of some of the larger creatures that live in the ocean. These include sharks, rays, and turtles, among others. Blue Corner’s dive is located within the current, making for excellent visibility up to 40 meters and allowing for truly spectacular views.

This dive site is ideal for experienced divers as the currents can be very strong, so make sure you know what you’re doing before taking the plunge. Blue Corner is a must-visit spot when diving in Bali with its many beautiful sights and creatures.

The situation in Bali is constantly changing, so it is important to check the latest local regulations and requirements before planning a dive trip. It is also important to follow safe diving practices and maintain social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols.

In order to safely explore the waters of Bali, there are a few tips and tricks that you should know.

1. Know Your Certification Requirements

To take advantage of the world of Bali scuba diving, you must be certified. Most dive shops will require proof of certification and training before they allow you to go out on the water. The most common certification course is the PADI Open Water Course, which is available at most dive shops in the area.

The PADI Open Water Course is a two to four-day program that covers the basics of a scuba dive, such as underwater skills, safety procedures, and basic navigational techniques. You’ll take practice dives to get used to the equipment and learn how to use it safely.

2. Know What Gear You Need

When packing for your Bali scuba diving adventure, ensure you have all the right gear. This includes a mask, fins, snorkel, wetsuit, or drysuit (depending on the water temperature), weights, buoyancy compensator (BCD), and regulator.

Having the right gear is essential for comfort and safety, so make sure that you are well-equipped before getting in the water. The last thing you want is to be unprepared when diving in unfamiliar waters!

3. Know How to Stay Safe

Safety is always the top priority regarding the best scuba dive experience. It’s important to follow all of the safety protocols and guidelines that you were taught in your certification course. This includes limiting your dive time, staying with a buddy, being aware of currents and visibility conditions, and monitoring your air consumption.

If you are going scuba diving in Bali, make sure that you are aware of any specific safety guidelines in the area. Do your research on the local marine life, be aware of any potential hazards, and always stay with a buddy if possible.

4. Know the Top Dive Sites

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an experienced diver – there are plenty of amazing dive sites to explore in Bali. Some of the top spots include Nusa Penida , Menjangan Island, Tulamben Wreck, and Padangbai. Each site offers something unique and spectacular for divers of all levels, so do your research and plan ahead.

Choosing your dive shop Bali is the first step towards experiencing Bali’s famous diving and snorkelling spots. You will discover that the available options are significant and each dive center with its own advantages and disadvantages. If you stay in Bali’s south or west coasts, best and perhaps the only choices should be made between one of the dive center sanur .

The reasons behind your decision which dive center sanur to use should be first safety and reviews. Price is of course important but it should not be the primary filter for your dive operator. All of the dive center sanur visit the same dive spots and dive sites but all of them provide different services.

For us, we focus on safety and quality above all with proper equipment checks, day and safety briefing before the trips, and highly experienced diving team. The diving equipment is regularly maintained and renewed every few years.

Our stunning dive training swimming pool stands ready for any courses or pool refresher sessions when necessary, an advantage that the majority of the other dive centers do not have which on other hand allows them to maintain a very cheap price.

Bali is an incredible destination for scuba diving, and it’s easy to see why. With so many amazing dive sites to explore, you will surely have a memorable experience no matter where you decide to take the plunge. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, Bali has something for everyone!

Each location on this list has a variety of marine life to explore and its own unique characteristics that make it special. The key to a perfect dive in Bali is to determine which site is best for you based on your experience and what you’re hoping to see.

No matter which dive site you choose, the beautiful waters of Bali are sure to treat you right! So make sure to add some or all of these sites to your list when planning your next scuba adventure in Bali. Happy diving!

If you are looking at moving beyond Bali, you should definitely consider the Komodo National Park, an easy 45 minutes flight from Bali, where liveaboard diving is at its best.

Bali Scuba Diving Spots

1. tulamben beach.

Scuba Diving in Bali, Tulamben Beach

A coastal village in East Bali, Tulamben Beach, is hugely popular amongst divers. It offers excellent visibility throughout the year with diving spots that cater to intermediate and advanced divers. With high chances of spotting dolphins, octopus, sunfish and even sea turtles, it's a wonderful spot for marine photographers too. The USAT Liberty shipwreck is the main attraction at Tulamben, a coveted spot for scuba diving in Bali. A cargo ship that had been hit by a Japanese submarine torpedo during World War II, it rests 30m (almost 100 feet) deep in the ocean after US and Dutch efforts to tow it to the seaport failed. During peak season, almost 100 divers visit this site in a single day. Tulamben can be reached via a three-hour transfer from Kuta or Sanur, so we'd recommend an overnight stay here.

2. Amed Beach

Scuba Diving in Bali, Amed Beach

About 25 kilometres from Tulamben, Amed Beach, is well-known amongst keen divers. It was once famous for its traditional salt farming, wherein seawater was poured into hollowed coconut tree trunks to dry in the sun, after which farmers harvested white salt crystals. Today, this beach sees a huge footfall of divers eager to explore the seaside village of Jemeluk Bay. Among avid snorkelers and divers, the view of Jemeluk Bay with Mount Agung in the background is iconic. Small fishing boats continue to operate in the shallow areas of this bay, resulting in low coral life and some pollution, but the best areas are further out into the ocean. At these spots, you can see schools of fish like white-spotted boxfish, emperor angelfish and lined surgeonfish. Amed Bed has plenty of hotels, like Santai Hotel Amed and Arya Amed Beach Resort, along with homestays for budget travellers.

3. Candidasa Beach

Scuba Diving in Bali

4. Menjangan Island

Scuba Diving in Bali, Menjangan Island

This island is a protected nature reserve part of West Bali National Park. It gains its name from the local name for the rare Javan rusa deer, 'Menjangan'. Spanning almost 4,000 hectares, it can be reached by boat, and you'll need a permit to dive on this island, which can be obtained for a small fee at the park office. Divers can spot beautiful shallow reefs along with the 'temple wall' of the colourful reef. In addition, there's an eel garden on the seabed and the popular 'Kapal Budak (anchor wreck), an abandoned boat almost 6-8m (20-25 feet) under the surface. At this site, with calm swimming conditions, you'll see frogfish, batfish and bannerfish in their natural elements.

 5. Puri Jati

Scuba Diving in Bali

This spot for scuba diving in Bali can be found on the northern side of the island on the outskirts of Seririt village. It boasts warm waters between 27-30 degrees all year round and flat, calm waves that make it ideal for beginner divers. Puri Jati has a gentle sand slope about 50m from the beach, where you get to see shrimp, lionfish, and algae-covered debris.

It's a popular site for muck divers and photographers worldwide seeking the famous mimic octopus, which imitates other creatures as a defence mechanism. Unfortunately, Puri Jati does not have a lush coral reef, but just 100m away is the Zen Reef. This reef has beautiful black sand and pretty, colourful coral at the deepest point of almost 20m (65 feet). Unfortunately, this spot continues to be popular amongst fishermen, so we'd advise you to stay aware of fishing nets during dives here.

6. Pemuteran Bay

Scuba Diving in Bali, Pemuteran Bay

Pemuteran Bay is home to the world's largest artificial reef project. This two-hectare site is a marine protected area. This scuba diving location in Bali has calm waves all year round, along with trickier, deeper spots, so it caters to different-level divers. The main attraction at Pemuteran Bay is the artificial reef garden that has shrines and statues of goddesses to explore. At the seabed nearly 36m (almost 120 feet) below the water surface, you discover lobsters and sea fans. You have the opportunity to adopt a coral here, meaning that a small wire structure in the shape of your name is planted next to your coral and the reef project sends regular emails on your coral's growth and development. Not only does Pemuteran Bay offer beautiful diving spots, but it gives you a chance to engage with marine conservation!

7. Nusa Penida

Scuba Diving in Bali, Nusa Penida

Located in south Bali, Nusa Penida is best reserved for advanced divers. Due to its location where waters meet the Indian Ocean at the Lombok Strait, it faces strong currents all year. Manta Point near Nusa Penida is a lovely place to spot manta rays, while Crystal Bay, although not too deep, is an exciting experience due to the strong currents. Another unique diving spot is the underwater cavern at 30m deep, which loses light as you travel through, but at the other end, you'll encounter hundreds of bats on resurfacing inside the bat cave.

At Nusa Penida, you get to encounter different types of sharks like the catshark, black-tip sharp or, on some occasions, hammerhead sharks too! Unfortunately, there aren't many dive resorts at Nusa Penida itself, but plenty of boats travel here daily.

8. Gilimanuk

scuba diving in Bali

If you're searching for an extraordinary scuba diving destination that's brimming with marine life and natural wonders, be sure to add Gilimanuk in Bali to your bucket list. This breathtaking location on the northwest coast of the island boasts a diverse and rich underwater world that's waiting to be explored. The waters surrounding Gilimanuk are crystal clear and host an incredible variety of sea creatures, such as vibrant coral reefs, schools of colourful fish, and majestic manta rays.  One of the standout features of this diving spot is the remarkable underwater temple, Pemuteran Temple. This ancient temple has been submerged for over 20 years and now serves as an artificial reef, attracting a wide variety of marine creatures, which makes it a favourite among divers.

9. Nusa Lembongan

nusa lembongan bali

Nusa Lembongan is a diver's paradise, and for good reason. With dive sites suitable for both beginner and experienced divers, Nusa Lembongan is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to discover the wonders of the underwater world. The three Nusa islands are home to some of the healthiest coral reefs in the world, with visibility of up to 40 meters that allows you to fully appreciate the incredible marine life. The nutrient-rich waters brought by strong currents make this area a hotspot for manta and mola mola sightings, making it a truly unique diving experience.

Swim giant manta rays at Manta Point and encounter the elusive Mola Mola at Toyapakeh, one of the few places in the world where you can see this fascinating creature up close. Crystal Bay offers a chance to explore underwater caves and admire the stunning coral formations.

10. Padang Bai

Scuba diving in Bali

Discover the hidden treasures of the ocean in the picturesque port town of Padang Bai! Home to an array of exotic marine life including turtles, sharks, and breathtaking corals, Padang Bai is the ultimate diving destination in Bali.  Whether you're an Open Water or Advanced Diver, you'll be amazed by the diversity of dive sites on offer, from the idyllic Blue Lagoon to The Jetty. For the more experienced divers, Shark Point and Gili Mimpang Tepekong offer an adrenaline-pumping adventure. All dive sites are accessed via a traditional outrigger boat called a jukung, adding a touch of authentic Balinese charm to your diving experience.

Best Time for Scuba Diving in Bali

Scuba Diving in Bali

The best time to visit Bali and enjoy the scuba diving experience is between June and November before the monsoon winds arrive. After this, Bali sees heavy rainfall from December to February (and sometimes March). As a result, streets become wet and muddy, markets often shut, and visibility is reduced drastically in the case of diving. Therefore, these months are considered off-season in Indonesia. However, some keen divers continue to visit during this time to avail the off-season prices at diving centres and hotels.

In terms of temperature, Bali boasts warm temperatures throughout the year. Even in the colder months of December and January, temperatures remain at around 25-29 degrees. So if you're keen on a warm, enjoyable dive in crystal-clear waters, then Bali is a great place to visit, especially in the summer months from July to November. Bali has high visibility in the water of 10m - 50m on average, especially during peak diving season.

Budget For Scuba Diving in Bali

As with any activity, scuba diving has multiple experience levels. Based on this, you can avail specific packages from different dive centres in Bali. For beginners looking to try diving for the first time, there are one-dive offers priced between USD 25 - USD 35 (INR 1,800 - INR 2,500).

If you'd like to take on a professional diving course with certification, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) has many courses with certifications based on different ages and specialities. PADI centres can be found in Bali, where you can take an open water course for USD 275 - USD 290 (INR 19,000 - INR 20,000) and advanced courses for USD 265 - USD 275 (INR 18,000 - INR 19,000). With enough experience, you can try PADI Divemaster courses for USD 800 (INR 55,000) onwards.

Price One-dive :IDR 375,000 - IDR 525,000 Advanced Courses - IDR 3,965,000 - IDR 4,114,000 Divemaster Courses - From IDR 11,969,880

Centres For Scuba Diving in Bali

scuba diving in bali, libery shipwreck

As a major hub of diving in Asia, there are plenty of diving centres in Bali. In the last few decades, these centres have become the hosts of many experienced divers, almost all of whom are PADI certified. Some of the best diving centres that you should consider are Tulamben Dive Centre, Joe's Gone Diving, CV Bottle's Up, Blue Dive Bali, AquaMarine Diving, Dive Paradise Tulamben, Dive The World Indonesia, Manta Manta Diving, Paradise Diving Indonesia, Mimpi Dive Centre, Legend Diving, Orca Dive Club Bali and PADI No Fear Diving. Their fees include the required diving equipment like regulators, air gauges, masks, fins, and sometimes even cameras for your adventures. You can rent equipment daily or weekly as per your requirements.

Don't go for the cheapest option when choosing a diving centre. Instead, it would help if you asked plenty of questions at the dive centre about the courses, diving sites, safety norms and experience of the divers. You'd be much happier with a well-trained diving team at a slightly higher price than an average team for the sake of a better deal. Moreover, even though diving centres go to great lengths to ensure your safety in the water, you can never be too careful. Do consider diving insurance before you embark on a scuba diving trip!

Tips For Scuba Diving in Bali

  • There are some common medical issues associated with scuba diving such as dehydration and sunburn. Make sure to take proper precautions against the same.
  • Don't forget to listen carefully to instructions before taking on a dive. Most injuries (and in some cases, death) are the result of diver error which can be easily avoided with patience and paying attention.
  • In terms of the common fear that you'll run out of air, it's best to remember that it can happen, but with time and experience, you'll learn to check your air gauge regularly. In terms of emergencies, other divers often carry extra mouth regulators to share air till you reach the surface.
  • The best sites for scuba diving in Bali for beginners are Amed Beach and Menjangan because of the little to no currents in the water.
  • For advanced divers, Candidasa and Nusa Penida offer an interesting challenge.
  • Even if you've had a good dive on a particular day, don't move to advanced diving spots without enough experience or your instructor's nod of approval. Better safe than sorry!

Had a great time diving with this outfit. I did two dives in Padangbai with a freshly minted open water certification, and got great guidance from the instructor, who helped  refine skills and made me feel more and more confident. We dived on a small wreck for dive number two, which was pretty cool. Comfy van ride to and from the hotel, great lunch, five stars easy

Bali Diving - Best Dive Sites

The Island of Gods offers more than 15 diverse diving destinations which can be accessed via land or boat. As a result, we organise day trips to the various scuba diving spots. Some of Bali’s best and most favourite dive sites include:

  • Wreck diving in Tulamben , Amed , and Kubu
  • Macro and muck diving in Padang Bai
  • Mola Mola and Manta Ray diving at Nusa Penida and the Gilis
  • Slow and strong currents drift diving at Nusa Penida and Gilis
  • Cavern and currents diving at Gili Biaha , Gili Mimpang , and Gili Tepekong
  • Artificial reef, muck and wall diving at Amed
  • Wall Diving with amazing visibility at Menjangan Island
  • Are you are beginner Diver? Here are our Top-5 dive sites in Bali for Beginners .

Bali Diving - Famous Marine Life

Bali Diving Manta Point

Manta Rays are harmless, beautiful, and absolutely graceful. One of the best ways to observe them is to scuba dive at Manta Point in Nusa Penida . The Manta Rays in Bali can reach a wing span of up to three meters. A manta fly-by is a life changing experience. They are curious and don’t mind divers and snorklers at all. Come see them fly and glide in their natural habitat.

Mola Mola Sunfish Bali Diving Nusa Penida

Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola)

Between June to October you have a chance to encounter the amazing giant Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola). Adults typically weigh between 250kg and 1,000kg. Because of its amazing weight it makes it one of the heaviest known bony fishes in the World. Typically they can been seen between 30-40m depth, so you need to be at least an advanced open water diver . The best dive sites to observe the Mola Mola is at Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida or Gili Mimpang .

Diving Gili Tepekong Amuk Bay

Scuba Diving in Bali you can encounter sharks at many of our bali diving sites. For example we can often find the rare Brown-banded Bamboo Shark at Manta Point in Nusa Penida . At other dives sites, such as Padang Bai or Gili Tepekong we can find the more common grey reef shark and often in groups. If small and cute sharks are your thing ask us and we will try our best to point them out to you.

Bali Diving Seasons, Weather, and Moon Cycles

The weather in Bali is always tropically warm and fairly constant. Daily high air temperatures vary between 30-32C, while during the night we experience 24-26C. Having said that the weather in Bali’s mountains is significantly cooler.

While temperatures change very little, the patterns of wind and rain in Bali create two distinct seasons. On the one hand we have the dry season from May to September. The wet or rainy season, on the other hand, is from November to March.

Diving in Bali is possible all year long. However, certain dive sites are favoured during certain months of the year. Dive sites like Nusa Penida and Amuk Bay ( Padang Bai and the Gilis ) are best experienced from June to October. During these months colder waters rise from the depths of the ocean. Hence, it is the best time to encounter the Mola Mola (Giant Ocean Sunfish). During the rest of the year sea temperature range between 26-28C but can occasionally drop below 20C.

The moon exerts a strong influence on tides. During full and new moon the moon and sun align. This produces so-called spring tides with extreme high and low tides. Drift Diving can be most challenging then. The first and three quarter moon produce more moderate tides and gentler currents. At many of Bali’s dive sites the tide has a stronger effect on dive conditions than the weather season.

Try Scuba Diving

Are you keen to experience breathing underwater and scuba dive into a whole new World for the first time? Bali is one the best places on Earth to do so. We offer you the Basic Diver program (from age 10) so you can take a safe and guided step into the beautiful underwater world.

You will be taken care of by one of our experienced and seasoned staff. When you compare schools, please note, that we have one of the lowest staff to student ratios on the island (usually 2:1 or 1:1). We understand your first dive is the most important one in your life and we want you to have a fantastic experience. This is why we prefer to keep our groups deliberately small.

Try scuba diving for the first time at the world famous USS Liberty Ship Wreck in Tulamben . If you prefer colorful coral reefs we can take you to Blue Lagoon in Padang Bai . We will not take you to Sanur like other dive schools do. You will love diving with us in the Balinese Sea.

  • Practice + 2 Dives

Are you ready to get a Scuba Diver or Open Water Scuba Diver certification? You can get certified from the age of 10. We offer the full range of courses to start, continue, or complete your certification with us. As an SSI dive center, we teach the full range of SSI courses. Our experienced instructors can teach courses from other famous agencies as well.

We recommend studying the e-learning before you travel to Bali. Hence, arriving here in Bali, we will have more time to focus on the practical skills of the scuba diving course. With digital learning, you can study at home at your rhythm and spend more time practicing real diving with us.
