Sellaronda MTB Track Tour for experienced bikers

With the help of cable cars to transport you and your bike, you can cycle this tour in both directions, clockwise and anti-clockwise..

A dream day, that flashes by in an instant. A feast for mind, body and soul. And the intensity is no less powerful if you set off from the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm rather than Gardena/Gröden. The mountain plateau has its very own “access point” to the most famous mountain-circumnavigation route in the world. Whether you opt for the clockwise or anti-clockwise tour, whether you set off from Gardena or the Alpe di Siusi, it’s always best to go with a local bike guide; the guides know the area like the backs of their hands - and always have a secret trail or two in store.

Sellaronda e-bike tour

E-bikes make the Sellaronda mountain bike tour much easier and make it possible for some amateur mountain bikers to master a route of this length and altitude with or without the help of the lifts. However, it is still important that you possess technical skills if you venture onto the Sellaronda on an e-bike. After all, narrow single trails and gravel roads present some challenges. Along the route, you will find numerous e-bike charging stations . If you don't have your own e-bike, you can easily rent one of the latest models at one of the bike rentals near the Sellaronda.

Lift facilities: Lift tickets

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Common questions about the sellaronda mtb tour..

You can ride the Sellaronda clockwise or counter-clockwise starting from one of four valleys: Alta Badia, Arabba, Val di Fassa or Val Gardena.

To use all the lifts of the Sellaronda you need the Supersummer Card, which already includes the transport of your bike. The personalised card is available as a day pass, low-priced multi-day pass or season pass. The Supersummer Card is available at the ticket offices of the lifts and in the Dolomiti Supersummer online shop.

If you ride the Sellaronda clockwise, you will have relatively few metres of ascent. Since the loop has a few single trails, you need at least average riding skills. Furthermore, you should have the necessary stamina for this tour, which takes five to nine hours. The Sellaronda counter-clockwise route is ideal for experienced mountain bikers or hobby mountain bikers who are riding an e-bike. The total ascent here is just over 1,000 metres.

Depending on your bike and your skills, you should plan at least five hours and a maximum of nine hours for the Sellaronda in both directions with an hour's lunch break already factored in.

With the Supersummer Card, you can also ride the Sellaronda without a guide. Beginners and those who would like to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Dolomites will benefit enormously from the company of a professional guide.

You can book your guided tour at the mountain bike schools and selected rental shops in the four Dolomite valleys of Alta Badia, Arabba, Fassa Valley and Val Gardena.

The best way to ride the Sellaronda is with a Fully, a mountain bike with both front and rear suspension. The tour is somewhat more strenuous, but still doable with a Hardtail bike.

There are professional bike rental shops in all four valleys where you can start the Sellaronda MTB Tour, offering up-to-date mountain bikes and E-MTBs for rent.

You can ride the Sellaronda very comfortably with an e-bike. However, you must have at least a basic level of technical ability.

For the Sellaronda MTB Tour, classic mountain bike clothing including a jersey and cycling shorts is sufficient. A helmet is always required. It also makes sense to wear additional protectors. Even in good weather, it is worth carrying a cycling jacket or long-sleeved top in your rucksack, as rapid weather changes are not uncommon and colder temperatures should be expected at high altitudes anyway.

Logo Selva – DOLOMITES Val Gardena

Landschaftlich Top-Top. Wege eher einfach.

The clockwise Sellaronda MTB TOUR involves relatively few uphill metres to cycle (about 370 m), thanks to the use of lifts that allow the transport of mountain bikes and e-bikes. There are numerous trails that require good riding technique. The total time varies according to riding ability: from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 9 hours, including lunch break.

Track types

Turn-by-turn directions.

From Selva, take the Costabella chairlift and after a short descent on a gravel road, you reach the Dantercepies cable car. The first descent begins just below the mountain station: a single trail leads to the Gardena Pass and then on to Colfosco. From Corvara you take two more lifts before tackling the Panrama high trail to Pralongià and a flow trail to the Campolongo Pass. From here, take the Campolongo chairlift up and downhill on a trail that requires advanced riding technique to Arabba. The Pescoi and Forcella Europa lifts take you back to the top. From the top station you can admire the spectacular Marmolada glacier and the artificial lake of Fedaia.

The descent to the Fodom lift above Arabba is particularly challenging on a very steep gravel road and trail. From the Pordoi Pass, a long trail leads to Canazei. From Campitello you take the cable car to Col Rodella and continue on a flow trail to the Sella Pass. A short pedalling passage through the Stone City leads to the highest point of this special rock formation at the foot of the Sassolungo. From here, two flow trails lead to Plan de Gralba and further along a path to Selva Gardena.

Sellaronda MTB Track Tour

Four passes with cult status.

On the Sellaronda trail, skiers and cyclists circle around one of the most distinctive natural landscapes in the Dolomites: the Sella group . It lies at the heart of four valleys, which wind their way down in all directions from the Sella massif. The circuit leads over four passes and offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views throughout, making the Sellaronda a trail with true cult status. Our guides will gladly accompany you on this unusual Dolomites bike tour , which counts as one of the most famous in South Tyrol: it is 58 kilometres long, leads through forests, mountain pastures, and along trails, and lasts around six and a half hours.

sellaronda mtb track tour

Clockwise Tour

Panoramic tour for mtb enthusiasts, elevation gain, lift facilities.

Travelled in a clockwise direction, the Sellaronda is best suited for mountain bike enthusiasts whose legs have had little training. Numerous cable lift facilities reduce the elevation gain from almost 4,000 m to 330 m. Riders are therefore able to focus fully on downhill fun in this iconic tour. Exciting trails and varied meadow and alpine paths ensure that a plethora of techniques is required along the way. And the view of the majestic Dolomite peaks is the jewel in the Sellaronda’s crown. The starting point is Selva Gardena/Wolkenstein in Val Gardena, heading up to the Gardena Pass before descending to Colfosco/Kolfuschg and Corvara in Val Badia. From there, you regain altitude with a gondola before enjoying the descent to the Campolongo Pass and on to Arabba in Livinallongo del Col di Lana. The next stages are the Pordoi Pass, Canazei, and Campitello in Val di Fassa, which are also well connected with lifts. You then step on the pedals once more to climb up to the Sella Pass before finally returning to Selva Gardena/Wolkenstein. Welcoming mountain lodges and inns make this the perfect tour.

Anticlockwise Tour

A tour for experts.

Anyone taking on the Sellaronda in an anticlockwise direction should be aware that it differs radically from its younger sister circuit. It begins in Selva Gardena/Wolkenstein in Val Gardena and not only orbits the Sella group anticlockwise, but also on a different, far more demanding route: This time, there are only three gondolas instead of five to lessen the elevation gain by 2,400 metres. The remaining 1,020 vertical metres present a tempting challenge for seasoned riders. To compensate for the physical exertion, this variant likewise offers innumerable panoramic views of the most majestic of all Dolomite peaks, and also regularly passes by lodges and inns where you can rest and find refreshment. Those tackling the Sellaronda in an anticlockwise direction are recommended to do so in the company of an accredited bike guide, and our expert MTB leaders will ensure that everything runs smoothly.
