Disney Magic Ship Overview

The Disney Magic is the cruise ship that started it all for Disney Cruise Line. With its maiden voyage in 1998, the world was introduced to an entirely different kind of cruising. In an industry that seems to be increasingly focused on mind-numbingly huge mega ships boasting roller coasters, bumper cars, and casinos , the Disney Magic holds its own and offers a unique experience that – while perhaps a bit more low-key – still has something to entertain the entire family.

After stepping onboard to the applause of the Crew and your fellow passengers, you’re immediately enveloped in the grand atrium of the ship, where a statue of Helmsman Mickey makes a popular photo spot. A glance around reveals art deco touches and hints of the sea itself, all invoking the early days of seafaring ocean liners.

How is Disney Magic Different From Other Disney Cruise Ships?

As the first-ever ship for Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Magic broke all kinds of long-standing norms for the cruise industry – introducing fireworks at sea, rotational dining, and many more innovations.

Now, with five ships in the fleet and more Disney Cruise ships under construction , you might think the Magic is a relic of the past. Not so.

The ship receives frequent updates, most recently in 2023 with the addition of a new lounge onboard. Its biggest upgrades came in 2013 when the ship underwent an overhaul so massive that they actually had to put in additional buoyancy capabilities to handle the added weight!

Thanks to this kind of attention, the Magic still has plenty of innovations and unique experiences that can only be found onboard this ship. For example, it’s the only Disney cruise ship on which you’ll find the AquaDunk drop-style water slide (added during the ship’s 2013 “re-imagination”).

The Disney Magic is a sister ship to the Disney Wonder , meaning the two are relatively equal in terms of construction (though similar areas on each ship are themed differently from one another). They’re the smallest ships in the fleet, easily outsized by other Disney ships.

Does the Smaller Size Make Disney Magic Better or Worse?

There are pros and cons to both types of ships, but it’s really going to come down to personal preference.

The smaller size of the Disney Magic means it’s much easier to navigate on foot – you’re just a short walk away from virtually any point on the ship. My wife and I prefer smaller ships such as the Magic for this very reason — it’s great to know that we can get pretty much anywhere onboard with a 5-10 minute walk and not be exhausted when we get there.

On the larger ships, I feel like I have to factor in “commute time” for dinner and shows. For the Disney Magic, it feels like I’m just walking around the corner. This makes the Disney Magic a great option for your first-ever Disney Cruise — it might not feel quite as overwhelming as a larger ship could.

This smaller ship is also able to visit ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, so you’re able to experience some fun itineraries and ports you might not be able to visit on a larger ship. In years past, the Disney Magic would actually sail straight right past the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy! (Cruise ships have since been prohibited from doing so, but it certainly was a sight back in the day.)

The Disney Magic has never really felt “small” to me — just “small in comparison.” If you’re more-accustomed to mega ships, you might prefer other Disney ships such as the Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , or Disney Wish ; on the other hand, you might appreciate the easier access to everything that comes with a smaller ship. It’s worth noting that while the larger Disney ships tend to upsize everything — meaning that theatres, dining rooms, and pools might be bigger — most of the ships still have relatively equal offerings. As an example, the Magic (smaller) and Dream (larger) both have three major restaurants, a night club district, kids clubs, pools, waterslides, a water ride, a spa, and live shows — just with differences in size, layout, and theming.

Disney Magic Staterooms

A bed and couch in a Disney Cruise stateroom, leading to an outdoor balcony verandah

Let’s first focus on your own private room onboard the ship. Your stateroom (passenger cabin) is essentially your hotel room at sea, so it’s an important choice to make!

The Disney Magic has 875 staterooms, most of which offer an outside view via either a porthole window or a verandah balcony. Staterooms on the ship are divided into four primary types of rooms; each of those four types is further divided into multiple categories and subcategories. The type of room you choose is one of the biggest factors in the price of your cruise , because the per-person cost changes as the stateroom category changes.

Here is a consolidated list of the room types offered onboard. They’re listed here generally from least expensive to most expensive, though there may be some price overlap. For a more in-depth look at each of these room types, see the descriptions and photos posted in our Disney Cruise Staterooms article.

Inside Staterooms on Disney Magic

Inside Staterooms have no porthole window and no balcony. They do have a round mirror that sort of looks like a porthole, but all you’ll see through it is your reflection. The standard version of this stateroom is the smallest, while the deluxe version is slightly larger.

The standard version is also the only regular stateroom category on the ship which does not feature a split bathroom configuration; a split bathroom has a toilet/sink in a separate room from the shower/sink, allowing two people to get ready at the same time.

Disney Magic Dining and Lounges

The dining room of Animator's Palate, with oversized art brushes and colorful light fixtures resembling an artist's paint palate.

It’s a well-known fact that cruises feature virtually endless food options , and the Disney Magic is no exception. With three sensational main dining restaurants, an elegant adult-only dining option, and plenty of places to grab a quick meal or a snack on the go, you certainly won’t go hungry onboard this ship.

Rotational Dining Restaurants on Disney Magic

Like all Disney Cruise Ships, the Disney Magic offers rotational dining during the nightly dinner service. This Disney Cruise Line innovation pre-schedules you to visit a different restaurant on each night of the cruise. You’ll have the same waitstaff each night, so they’ll get to know you and your food preferences.

Dinner at these three restaurants is included in the cost of your Disney Cruise .

  • Animator’s Palate

A large video screen on the wall in Animator's Palate

The flagship dining experience on the first four Disney ships (including Disney Magic), Animator’s Palate offers a fan-favorite menu along with a taste of the magic of animation.

Menu-wise, you’ll find Asian, Pacific, and California influences: wild mushroom risotto, black truffle pasta purseittes (a DCL favorite!), butternut squash soup, polenta cake with tomato and mushroom, lemon-thyme marinated chicken, beef tenderloin, and more.

Your dinner also includes a tribute to animation – Drawn to Magic tells the story of how an animated feature comes to life. Much like a cartoon goes from a pencil sketch to ink-and-paint, the entire dining room goes from black-and-white to color during your meal, thanks to a bit of help from Sorcerer Mickey.

On longer cruises, you might also experience Animation Magic , allowing you to draw your own character and see it animated as part of the dinner show! This is one of those amazingly cool experiences that really sets Disney Cruise Line apart from any other offering at sea.

The dining room at Lumiere's, with a scene from Beauty & The Beast on the wall.

Lumiere’s offers French cuisine in an elegant setting. Menu options may include a bacon and mushroom tart, French onion soup, escargot, roast duck, avocado citrus salad, sea bass, and lobster mac-and-cheese. Round out your meal with creme brulee or a delightful Grand Marnier souffle.

Outside of dinner service, Lumiere’s is also an option for breakfast and lunch on most days; you’ll find a more-Americanized menu during those meal periods.

  • Rapunzel’s Royal Table

Disney character Rapunzel reaches for a floating lantern in the dining room of Rapunzel's Royal Table

You’re invited to a special celebration for Rapunzel in the kingdom of Corona! Thanks to a little Disney magic, your night at the restaurant just happens to fall during the celebration of Rapunzel’s birthday and the anniversary of her return to the kingdom. A true royal feast unfolds… stuffed ravioli, ahi tuna tartare, smoked salmon, lemon & thyme roast chicken, prime rib, and the pun-definitely-intended angel hair pasta with sea scallops.

Dinner here includes a show: singing, dancing, the brusque yet lovable crew from the Snuggly Duckling, and a visit from Flynn and Rapunzel! All together, it makes for a fantastic meal with a hint of character dining .

Adult-Exclusive Dining on the Disney Magic

A Disney Cruise is certainly a family affair, but it’s not by any means just for kids. There are plenty of ways for adults to have fun on a Disney Cruise . One of those is to enjoy an adult-exclusive dinner while the kids enjoy the youth clubs.

Reserve a table at Palo for a delightful meal featuring memorable Italian cuisine. The stunning venue includes giant windows overlooking the ocean, providing a perfect backdrop for your meal.

Dinner menu items include butternut agnolotti, seared sea scallops, dover sole expertly fileted at your tableside, tiramisù, and their signature chocolate soufflé. On sea days, a tremendously-popular brunch service is typically offered.

Dining here requires an upcharge and space is usually in high demand; book as early as your onboard booking window allows.

Casual Dining on the Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Breakfast and lunch are casual affairs onboard – and one of the best places to enjoy these meals is at Cabanas.

The buffet-style Cabanas restaurant offers a mix of American, European, and Asian favorites in an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast and lunch served from nearly a dozen food stations.

In the morning, enjoy all the expected items – made-to-order omelets, bacon, sausage, Mickey Waffles, and such – along with international offerings that might include Huevos Rancheros, rice, and miso soup. I myself don’t usually include gravlax on my breakfast menu at home, but enjoy it as a nice change on my cruise breakfast plate. And every cruise I look forward to enjoying a giant bowl of fresh muesli with dried fruits and nuts to start my day (alongside a Mickey Waffle or two).

Lunch at Cabanas is an ever-changing mix of freshly-grilled meats, jumbo iced shrimp and crab claws, burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and more.

Cabanas also offers a dinner service alternative. It’s not buffet style at night – you’ll have a server at your table – but it’s a nice alternative if you’ve had your fill of the main dining rooms on a longer cruise.

Lounges, Bars, and Snacks on the Disney Magic

There’s always a place to grab a quick bite or a refreshing drink onboard. Whether you’re looking for a nibble, just want a soda, or are seeking something with a bit of alcohol , you’ll easily find it onboard. Here are just a few highlights:

An adults-only retreat that focuses on specialty coffees and teas during the day, with cocktails in the evening.

This family-friendly venue hosts interactive events for all ages. Karaoke, trivia, game shows, and even dance parties can be found here on a daily basis.

Daisy’s De-Lites, Duck-In Diner, and Pinocchio’s Pizzeria

For a quick grab-and-go snack poolside, check out these quick service windows. You’ll find pizza, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, chicken tenders, and even shawarma.

Eye Scream Treats and Frozone Treats

Cool down with all-you-can eat soft-serve ice cream cones (included in the cost of your cruise!), or spend a bit for a specialty smoothie.

An undersea-themed lounge that combines cocktails with live entertainment, such as comedy, music, karaoke, and interactive game shows.

An adults-only piano lounge featuring live music in a classy 1950s Hollywood atmosphere. Enjoy beer, wine, and of course martinis.

  • O’Gills Pub

The Disney Magic’s sports bar. Live matches (when available) are beamed in via satellite to this lively venue. Try the Blarney Stone Tasting Flight, with selections of whisky and Irish coffee.

Soda Station

One major difference between Disney Cruise dining and other cruise lines is that most non-alcoholic drinks are included at no additional cost — no need to purchase a separate drink package ! Located near the pool, this soda station offers unlimited refills all day long.

  • Soul Cat Lounge

Themed to the Disney•PIXAR film Soul . It’s located along the path leading to Rapunzel’s Royal Table, making it a great spot for a pre/post dinner drink and zeppole (fried dough pastry) — all accompanied by live music.

Room Service on Disney Magic

Room Service is included at no additional charge on the Disney Magic – all you’re expected to pay for is a tip for the crew member who delivers the food (and any specialty items you might opt for).

The standard menu typically includes salads, soups, chicken tenders, burgers and sandwiches, and even hot wings.  You’ll also typically find a couple of flatbread/pizza selections and perhaps a pasta dish. Cookies and cake/pie are the standard dessert.

A favorite among Disney Cruise Line’s repeat cruisers is the All Hands on Deck , a plate of assorted cheese, fruit, and crackers. And here’s a secret menu item that’s sure to delight kids of all ages: the famed Mickey’s Premium ice cream bar – yes, the same as those you find at Disney World and Disneyland!

If you don’t mind paying a bit extra, you can add on specialty items such as beer, wine, canned soft drinks, deluxe coffees, juices, and pre-packaged snacks such as candies.

Best Bets for Each Meal on Disney Magic

Below we list each of the main meal periods onboard the ship, and your best options for each.

  • Primary option: Cabanas is the prime breakfast spot onboard with long hours, a wide variety, and all you care to eat. The downside of this location is that its popularity can make it feel a bit hectic at times.
  • Secondary option: One of the three rotational restaurants (typically Lumiere’s) usually offers a table-service breakfast, complete with a server who will bring your food and keep your drinks refilled. The menu is a bit more limited than at Cabanas, but it’s usually a much more relaxed option to start your day.
  • Other options: You can order room service, but be forewarned that the breakfast menu is extremely limited. There’s no “hot breakfast” (eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal) on the menu, but you can get juices, coffees, pastries, and cold cereals. Elsewhere on the ship, you can likely find a light pastry at one of the cafes onboard, but don’t expect a filling meal.
  • Primary option: Like at breakfast, Cabanas is the best lunch option thanks to its tremendous selection. Iced jumbo shrimp and crab claws are a signature menu item most days; you’ll also find freshly grilled meats, a wide variety of side items, some interesting international selections, and lots of tempting desserts.
  • Secondary option: If you’re spending the afternoon lounging by the pool, there’s no need to dry off and head inside when a craving hits. Just drip your way on over to one of the many food service windows along the pool deck to enjoy a quick meal.  Options are more limited than Cabanas, but you’ll find enough to satisfy that rumbly in your tumbly with burgers, dogs, sandwiches, and unlimited ice cream cones. These windows often offer extended hours – a great option if you missed lunch hours at Cabanas or need a snack to hold you over until a later dinner service.
  • Other options : Lumiere’s typically serves a lunch option with open seating and waitstaff at your table. Room Service is another good option; your menu options won’t be terribly exciting, but you can still get a filling meal without leaving your couch (well, except to answer the door).
  • Primary option: Your assigned rotational dining restaurant is the heart of Disney Cruise dining. Your dedicated service team follows you all voyage long and will likely become your favorite Crew Members onboard the ship. Add in special themed menus and other thoughtful touches, and you’ll quickly see why this is a highlight of each day onboard.
  • Secondary option: As an alternative to your pre-scheduled rotational dining restaurant, you might opt to experience Cabanas in a totally new way. Dinner at Cabanas is an entirely different experience than the free-for-all buffet-style offerings that are the mainstay of breakfast and lunch. You’ll be seated at a table, and a server will present you a menu that features some of the most popular selections from other restaurants. It’s typically very laid back and it makes for a nice alternative, especially if a particular themed night at your assigned restaurant doesn’t sound like your speed..
  • Other options: Many cruisers enjoy dedicating at least one night of their cruise to an adult-exclusive meal at Palo. Otherwise, you can always grab something from the quick-service windows on the pool deck, or order room service.

Off-hours Eating and Snacking

  • Primary option: For cravings outside the main meal periods, your best bet is the quick-service options on the pool deck. Their generous hours and snacky offerings make them a great choice to tide you over between meals. Individual portions tend to be “snack sized” (such as 2 or 3 chicken tenders and a few fries), so you won’t spoil your dinner. But it’s still all-you-can-eat so you can certainly fill up if you desire.
  • Secondary option: Room Service is available 24/7 (up until about 1:30 AM on the last morning of your cruise), and is the only option for overnight snacking. Whether you’re craving buffalo wings at 4:00 AM (no judgment) or just want some warm cookies and milk at bedtime, room service won’t leave you hungry.

Disney Magic Pools and Water Slides

Image of the Aqua Dunk water slide, with a large clear tube coiled alongside the Disney Magic's distinctive red funnels (featuring a white Mickey Mouse silhouette and blue wave design)

The AquaDunk is a drop-style water slide that’s only found onboard the Disney Magic – not even its sister ship the Disney Wonder has one!

Your adventure begins when you climb the steps to the top of one of Disney Magic’s iconic red smokestack funnels; there, you’ll step into the launch chamber of a 215-foot-long water slide tube. Cross your arms and enjoy the exquisite suspense before the floor drops out from beneath you trapdoor-style, sending you plummeting about forty feet straight down and careening out over the edge of the ship (still safely encased in the clear tube). Seconds later, you’ll splash down in a shallow run-out area that makes it easy to stand up, perform the necessary wedgie extraction (since we’re being honest here), and head out for more fun.

The ride is almost comically short – less than 10 seconds from trapdoor to splashdown – but it’s quite exhilarating.

There’s no additional charge to ride the AquaDunk, but you will have to wait in line (sorry, no FastPass or Lightning Lane here). Lines tend to be longest on Sea Days and shorter when the ship is in port. Riding earlier or later can also help avoid crowds – just don’t forget to check the operating hours each day in the Navigator app.

Guests must be at least 48” tall to ride.

Twist ’n’ Spout

Part of the AquaLab (see below), Twist ‘n’ Spout is a bright yellow double-looping waterslide. You’ll twist and turn over almost 250 feet before a thrilling splashdown. Guests must be at least 38” tall to ride, and adult supervision is required for kids under age 16.

Pools and Splash Pads

The AquaLab on the Disney Magic, with the giant Twist 'n' Spout slide's yellow tubes behind a shallow pool and splash zone

This multi-level water playground is a great place for kids to cool off during their cruise. It includes a small pool, a “beach” with geysers and pop jets, pouring “paint” cans and showerheads, leaky pipes, and the amusing Donald’s Boiler – a familiar-shaped contraption that occasionally drenches everyone. Intended for ages 3+; adult supervision required for those under age 16.

Goofy’s Pool

The main pool onboard the ship, Goofy’s Pool on deck 9 serves as the family pool onboard. In addition to the large main pool, you’ll also find a couple of whirlpool tubs nearby. The giant FunnelVision video screen and a large stage are nearby, so there’s always something to keep you entertained while swimming. Intended for ages 3+ (must be toilet trained), with adult supervision required for those under age 16. This pool is occasionally closed so that it can be covered and used as additional deck space for major events, such as the sail-away party.

Nephews’ Splash Zone

Tiny travelers aged 3 years or younger can splash away the day among a veritable sea of spraying water and pop jets. Swim diapers are required, and children must be supervised by an adult.

Quiet Cove Pool

A serene oasis for the grown-ups. Those under the age of 18 are not permitted in this adults-only escape, not because anything elicit happens there but rather because every age group needs a bit of time to themselves. You’ll find a pool and whirlpool tubs here, along with plenty of lounge chairs and easy access to the adult beverage of your choice.

Disney Magic Kids Clubs and Teen Clubs

DCL Oceaneer Club

You might expect a Disney Cruise to be overrun with children. And while there are certainly plenty of kids onboard, they spend a lot of time in the fantastic kids clubs on the ship so you might be surprised at how few kids you see at times. A substantial portion of Deck 5 is dedicated to those under age 12.

  • Disney’s Oceaneer Club

The Oceaneer Club is the place where your kids will likely spend a large amount of their time onboard. It’s a secure facility accessible only to kids aged 3-10 and trained youth activities staff. Inside there are tons of kid-friendly spaces and activities, and it’s all included in the cost of your Disney cruise! This amazing kids club is one of the reasons we consider Disney to be the best cruise line for children .

Andy’s Room

Kids are immersed in the world of Disney·Pixar’s Toy Story movies in this unique multi-level play area.

Marvel Super Hero Academy

Themed as a top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, this area gives kids the chance to summon their inner Super Hero (and visit with a few real ones, too!). There’s plenty of time for freeform play, and occasional structured activities.

Disney Junior Area

A favorite of younger Oceaneers, the Disney Junior area features games, characters, and more.

Pixie Hollow

In this enchanted forest realm – home to Tinker Bell and her fairy friends – kids will find everything they need for a game of dress-up, a special craft project, or storytime.

  • Disney’s Oceaneer Lab

A partner facility to the Oceaneer Club, the Oceaneer Lab offers lots of hand-on activities and experiences for kids ages 3-10.

Tweens and young teens – ages 11 to 14 – have a space all to themselves onboard the Disney Magic. Edge is the perfect place to relax thanks to its moody boiler room feel. There’s a huge video screen, a dance floor, plus plenty of video games and crafts. A mix of planned activities and unstructured free time keeps things interesting.

This teens-only retreat is in one of the coolest places on the ship – right inside one of the iconic red smokestack funnels! Those aged 14 to 17 can enjoy a specialty coffee or smoothie while relaxing with newfound friends. For techy types, there are plenty of TVs, video games, and tablets. Meanwhile, active teens will enjoy dance parties, karaoke sessions, and group activities.

it’s a small world nursery!

The tiniest cruisers are well taken care of in it’s a small world nursery! , an onboard babysitting service for infants and toddlers aged three and younger.

Disney youth counselors watch over the tykes and will also feed them and handle any necessary diaper changes.

This nursery service does require an additional (nominal) fee for each half-hour, with a one-hour minimum. Discounts are available for multiple children in the same family. Advanced reservations are strongly recommended. Note that there are no in-room babysitting services onboard.

Need Answers But Don’t Want To Wait On Hold?

Disney Magic Entertainment and Activities

Stage and seating of the Walt Disney Theatre

Disney is first and foremost an entertainment company – and that concept continues onboard its ships.

Broadway-Style Shows in the Walt Disney Theatre

Each night of your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a live show in the beautiful Walt Disney Theatre. This includes at least three Broadway-style shows during your cruise, along with other additions (such as family-friendly comedians, magicians, and hypnotists) on longer voyages.

Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic

A touching tale of a young girl at the age of not believing – follow along as she learns how to believe in herself thanks to the power of positive thinking along with some help from favorite Disney characters and memorable music.

Tangled: The Musical

A lively musical retelling of Rapunzel’s adventures. Sing along with film favorites and learn a few new songs, too! This live stage adaptation of the popular film is sure to wow you – especially when the mesmerizing puppet of Maximus takes the stage.

Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story

And they all lived happily ever after! But what happened after the end of the Disney classic Cinderella ? This comedy explores the idea of time-traveling (!) wicked stepmothers and stepdaughters (thanks to help from, who else, a wicked Fairy Godfather) trying to destroy the glass slipper and wreck Cinderella’s marriage.

Pirate Night / Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party with Fireworks

Pirate night starts with the delivery of pirate bandanas to your stateroom – then the party moves to your scheduled dining location for the evening, where a special themed menu awaits. Then, head up to the pool deck for a raucous show with high-flying pirates including favorite Disney characters. Finally, the grand finale (and another Disney innovation) – fireworks at sea!

Note: not every itinerary offers a pirate night, and fireworks may be canceled due to weather.

Disney Movies in the Buena Vista Theatre

First-run and classic favorite Disney, PIXAR, and LucasFilm movies are shown all day long in the Buena Vista Theatre. Best of all? It’s completely free! You don’t even need a ticket – just drop in at showtime and grab a seat.

Sailing during the premiere of a highly-anticipated Disney film? It’ll be shown repeatedly in the Buena Vista Theatre, likely after a huge “PremEAR at Sea” showing in the Walt Disney Theatre.

Disney Magic Spas and Salons

Pedicure chairs face large oceanview windows at Senses Spa on Disney Magic. Senses is offered on all Disney cruises.

If you think a massage is relaxing, imagine a massage while looking out over the ocean! Disney Magic offers a full-service spa onboard the ship, plus many other health and wellness services.

Senses Spa and Salon

Pamper yourself with spa treatments, salon services, and rejuvenation procedures at this restful retreat. Experience Swedish massage, aroma stone therapy, deep tissue massage, facials, acupuncture, teeth whitening, shampoo/cut/style, manicures, pedicures, CoolSculpting, and more. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, showers, lockers, sandals, and robes round out the offerings.

Exclusively for guests aged 13-17, this special area of Senses offers treatments to teens. A parent or guardian must accompany the teen for the duration of the treatment ( solo and combined treatments are offered as an option).

Fitness Center

Keep up your workout routine (and burn off the four desserts you ordered at dinner last night) in the Fitness Center. Stay in shape with weight machines, cardio equipment, ellipticals, treadmills, and other equipment; participate in a yoga, Pilates, or aerobics class; or opt for personalized one-on-one training and analysis with a professional trainer.

  • Walking/Jogging Track

I don’t spend much time in the gym, but I do enjoy a nice walk for exercise. The Disney Magic offers a walking/jogging track on Deck 4 that offers close-up ocean views as well as a neat glimpse of some of the heavy machinery that keeps the ship going (should you be into that sort of thing like I am). It’s a great place to take a leisurely stroll after dinner, or take a jog if you’re so inclined. You might even recognize your stateroom host or dinner server – off-duty, of course – out for a run.

The Ultimate Guide to Shows on Disney Cruise Line

By Kayleigh Henniger Leave a Comment

If setting sail with Disney Cruise Line (DCL) is one of your favorite things to do, or if you’re hoping to experience it for the first time, this post is for you!

shows on disney magic cruise

Disney Wish

For a first-timer, it might seem that the Disney Cruises would have less to do and experience compared to the parks. While, no, you won’t be soaring at nearly 60 miles per hour on a roller coaster, or taking photos in front of a castle, there are plenty of shows, snacks, character meet and greets, and activities — so many, in fact, that you’ll find that there simply isn’t enough time to complete everything! A fan-favorite experience on these ships is watching the shows that take place aboard. If your idea of fun includes sitting in a crowd and watching a themed show or spectacular be performed in front of you, then keep reading.

This post is going to serve as your ultimate guide to shows on DCL. Typically, there are two different showings of each show or musical per day — one that accommodates guests from each of the two dining times. However, for a brand-new, popular musical, there might also be an additional showing earlier in the day. (Back in the pandemic days, DCL actually limited the number of specific shows playing, with more times added to allow for distancing!)

Schedules are always subject to change, so it’s important to check the Daily Navigator or the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for specifics on available shows, dates, and times. Shows are typically around an hour long, so you’ll still have plenty of time to fit in other activities and experiences throughout the evening. Now, without further ado, let’s first talk about the different theaters available aboard DCL.

Walt Disney Theatre

The Walt Disney Theatre is aboard the Magic, Wonder, Dream, Fantasy, and Wish ships. The theatre decor resembles that of vintage movie houses, yet the shows on stage include modern technology.

Walt Disney Theater

The theatre is adorned with Art Deco and Art Nouveau flourishes from the 1930s and 1940s. This luxurious theatre was designed to handle complex, modern productions.

Buena Vista Theatre

The Buena Vista Theatre is inspired by the golden age of cinema — boasting Art Deco-inspired decor throughout. You’ll find it aboard the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy.

The theatre showcases first-run films as well as popular motion-picture releases and classic Disney films!

Wonderland and Neverland Cinema

Specific to the Disney Wish, these cinemas are themed to popular classic Disney films. Wonderland is a woodland-themed theater themed to  Alice in Wonderland, while Neverland is inspired by Peter Pan’s flight from London to Neverland.

Combined, these cinemas seat 170 guests and are more intimate theatres. Here, visitors can catch glimpses of modern films.

There are awards given for various categories and the show includes performances from popular Disney movies including  The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, and Mulan.

Frequently Asked Questions: Stage Shows on Disney Cruise Line Ships

Every Disney Cruise Line ship includes stage shows as part of their evening entertainment. Here’s everything you need to know about the DCL stage show experience.

Where are DCL stage shows performed?

The major productions are performed at each ship’s Walt Disney Theater. This is located on Deck 4 Forward on the Magic and Wonder. On the Dream, Fantasy, Wish, and Treasure, the main Walt Disney Theater entrance is on Deck 3 Forward, with additional balcony seating on Deck 4 Forward.

shows on disney magic cruise

What kinds of shows are there on the Disney Cruise ships?

There are three main types of stage performances that take place in the Walt Disney Theater.

  • Jukebox-style original shows . These are shows that use characters and songs from a variety of different Disney/Pixar franchises and combine them into a wholly new story.
  • Retellings of familiar Disney stories . These shows are modified and abridged versions of a familiar Disney tale.
  • Guest performers .  On sailings of longer than three or four nights, you’ll often see comedians, magicians, ventriloquists, musicians, and the like performing on the main stage.

On longer sailings you might also have a new Disney, Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars film shown in the Walt Disney Theater.

How long are the shows?

Live evening performances typically last about an hour. This may be prefaced by a 5-10 minute introduction and announcements by the cruise director.

What time are the stage shows?

Times vary slightly depending on your specific itinerary, check your Personal Navigator app while you’re onboard for the exact details. But in general there will be two performances of the same show each evening, one at about 5:45 or 6:00 p.m. and one at about 8:15 or 8:30.

These times are the inverse of the main dining room seating times. So if you have a 6:00 dinner time, then you’ll be able to see the 8:30 stage show, and vice versa.

In addition to the evening shows, some sailings may offer a mid-afternoon extra performance of a mainstage show, but this does not happen on many itineraries.

What happens if I want to see one of the stage shows, but I can’t?

There are times when a guest can’t get to a stage show. Some reasons might be:

  • You have an adult dining experience booked during the showtimes.
  • You get back late from a port excursion.
  • Someone in your party is ill.
  • Your child is falls asleep in the stateroom during showtime and you don’t want to wake them.

If you find that you can’t make it to the show, then you can look for the Walt Disney Theater channel on your stateroom TV. This channel will show a pre-recorded version of the show playing in the main theater. It’s a poor substitute for the real thing, but sometimes you have to make do.

Can I have someone else in my party record the stage show for me?

Noooooo. Taking photos and video during the live performances is strictly prohibited. It distracts the audience and the performers (which is particularly dangerous on a moving vessel) and it’s poor form in general. Don’t do it.

I have seen guests removed from the theaters for using recording devices during a performance.

Can I have a snack during the show?

Just prior to and during showtimes, the Preludes snack bar will open near the Walt Disney Theater entrance. Preludes sells popcorn, some packaged snacks, beer, wine, and canned soft drinks, which you’re welcome to bring into the theater and consume during the show. There is a fee to get these items. For example, a canned soda will cost about $1.50.

If you’re not in the mood to pay for something like soda that you can easily get for free from the dispensers on the pool deck, then you can try to bring a cup of free soda into the theater with you. I’ve also put some free pool deck French fries into a paper cup and taken those into the theater.

I used the word “try” in the previous paragraph, because sometimes you’ll have a cast member tell you not to bring non-Preludes food into the theater. In my personal experience this happens about 25% percent of the time and is more common on the Wish than on the older ships. Be discrete about what you’re doing and just abandon your snack if you’re asked to do so.

Do I have to get to the theater early?

This is a controversial topic. If you don’t care about where you sit, then you’re probably fine to show up at the theater 5-10 minutes prior to showtime and you’ll find a seat. DCL has tons of experience with understanding guest interests and capacity for entertainment. That said, some guests will say that you absolutely must show up at the theater at least half an hour in advance. These people might be extremely passionate about their seat location or they might have a large party that they feel must sit together.

If you have a large group and truly feel that you must sit front and center, then you should probably arrive at the theater no later than 20 minutes in advance. If you just want to see the show, you can roll up just before it starts.

Can I save seats for my family?

Generally this is a big no-no.

Are you holding one seat for five minutes while your companion runs to the restroom quickly? Then you’re probably not going to have any issues. Are you holding an entire row for a dozen people who are going to arrive at the theater after the show starts, well, that’s just not polite.

Is there a dress code for the theater on the ship?

They don’t specify one. You should stay away from swimwear, but otherwise you can wear what you like. However, since most folks with either be coming from or going to dinner right before or after the show, the majority of guests in the theater will be wearing attire appropriate for dining.

Are there other etiquette rules I should know about?

You should be as respectful of the players and other audience members on the ship as you would be at a fancy theater on land. This means no talking during the performance and you should show your appreciation to the performers by applauding at the appropriate junctures. And while young children are welcome at the main theater stage shows, if your baby or toddler starts to cry or otherwise become unruly, PLEASE take them out of the theater.

Is there a charge to see the shows on Disney Cruise Line?

Nope. Stage shows are included with the price of your cruise.

Do I need reservations to see a stage show on Disney Cruise Line?

No. You’re welcome to see the stage shows on Disney Cruise Line with no reservations and no tickets. In fact, if you’d like to skip your main dining room dinner and see a show twice in one evening, you’re perfectly welcome to do that.

What is the quality of the shows like? Are they only for kids?

Let’s take the second part of this question first. While the stage shows on Disney Cruise Line use familiar songs and stories from Disney films and they’re all appropriate for children, with no off-color language or situations, MANY adults love the DCL shows. If you’re traveling on DCL without kids and you love Beauty & the Beast (for example), then by all means go ahead and see the show.

As for quality, that’s in the eye of the beholder. Like most things Disney, some guests think they’re astounding and others find them underwhelming.

Disney advertises the shows as “Broadway-style.” They are Broadway-style in that there are live performers who dance and sing. The performers are completely competent. There are several stories of cruise ship performers who have gone on to have notable careers on Broadway or screen (Jennifer Hudson is the classic example), but those stories are relatively rare.

Another big difference is that Broadway musicals are required to use live musicians. On DCL, the performers sing with recorded orchestrations, which somewhat diminishes the productions’ depth and spontaneity. Similarly, the limited space on a moving vessel means that sets cannot be as cumbersome or elaborate as they might be on land.

Additionally, the shows on DCL run about an hour. Musicals on Broadway typically last at least two hours, which means that in the story’s abridgments, you lose much of the nuance in the storytelling. The Aladdin show on DCL is not the same as the Aladdin show on Broadway. On the plus side for DCL, some technical aspects of staging a live production at sea are nothing short of remarkable.

If you’re looking for something nearer to a Broadway experience at sea, Royal Caribbean offers some sailings with full-length renditions of past Broadway hits such as Mama Mia, Cats, and Grease.

shows on disney magic cruise

What shows will I see during my DCL vacation?

There are three shows resident on each Disney Cruise Line ship. They are:

  • Beauty and the Beast. This show is based on the live-action movie, not the animated version.
  • The Golden Mickeys. A jukebox-style show that takes the form of a faux awards ceremony.
  • Disney’s Believe. A jukebox-style show that tells about a daughter’s relationship with her botanist father.
  • Frozen: A Musical Spectacular. Lots of puppets and projections, as well as some obligatory fake snow.
  • Disney’s Aladdin. A shortened version of the film story.
  • Disney’s Believe. (As above.)
  • Tangled: The Musical. Includes several songs that are not in the movie.
  • Disney Dreams. A girl talks with Peter Pan and sees scenes from a variety of Disney movies.
  • Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story. What if the glass slipper broke before Cindy could slip it on?
  • Disney’s Aladdin. (As above.)
  • Disney Seas the Adventure (As below.)
  • One new show, to be announced at a later date.
  • Disney Seas the Adventure. Goofy takes the helm of the ship and gentle mayhem ensues.
  • The Little Mermaid. As if a community theater troupe put on a version of the live-action film.
  • Frozen: A Musical Spectacular. (As above.)
  • The Golden Mickeys. (As above.)
  • Disney Dreams. (As above.)

I’m doing a repeat sailing on one of the Disney ships. Will I see the same shows I saw last time? Does Disney ever change the shows on a ship?

Crafting a show for sea viewing is a long, complicated, and expensive process. Disney does change the onboard shows, but you can expect this to happen at something like 10-year intervals. Unless it’s been a VERY long time since you last sailed on your vessel, you can expect the shows to be the same.

If you don’t want to repeat seeing a show, you can use that time to explore other parts of the ship when they’re relatively empty. A classic trick is to ride on your ship’s feature pool slide during showtime and you’ll almost certainly have little to no wait time.

The shows on the Dream a few years ago were amazing. It was such a memorable experience.

For snacks we ordered a plate of chocolate chip cookies from room service and brought with us to the show.

Having just returned from the Fantasy, I thought Aladdin was terrific, while Frozen and Believe were forgettable.

Everything You Need to Know About the Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Posted on Published: 03/30/2024

After sailing on the Disney Cruise Line ten times, I still hadn’t had the opportunity to set sail on the Disney Magic. I finally booked a four-day sailing on the ship and enjoyed exploring all of the restaurants, activities, and amenities of the Disney Magic. If you are considering the Disney Magic for your next vacation, our guide can help you learn about the ship.

Disclosure:  In the past, I’ve traveled on other Disney Cruise Line ships as part of Disney Social Media Moms and a media trip at no/low cost, but paid full price for this and other sailings. This post contains affiliate links. A purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you.

The Disney Magic was Disney’s very first cruise ship and was put into service in 1998. Its godmother is Patricia Disney, Roy E. Disney’s wife . Even though it’s well over 20 years old, it still looks incredibly modern.

The Disney Magic has 11 public decks with about 875 staterooms. Approximately 2,400 passengers can be accommodated on the ship. During our sailing, the ship wasn’t full, and most of the public areas were pretty quiet. Of course, your experience may vary depending on the capacity.

Like the Disney Wonder , the Disney Magic is smaller and more intimate than the Disney Dream, the DIsney Wish, and the Disney Fantasy. It’s decorated in an Art Deco style, with a figure of Captain Mickey Mouse in the main atrium.

The Disney Magic Cruise ship docked at Key West

Staterooms on the Ship

Like the other Disney ships, there are different room types on the Disney Magic cruise ship. These include concierge rooms, verandah rooms, oceanview staterooms (with a porthole window but no verandah), and inside rooms.

Connecting rooms are offered. We had two staterooms among our group, so we decided to leave the doors open in the center of the rooms so we had a larger “suite”. This is a great option for families with more than 4 children because you’ll have two bathrooms to use as well as more space.

If you have a connecting room with a verandah, you’ll also be able to open up the center of the verandahs to make those connect as well.

When we sail on the Disney Cruise Line, we always book an oceanview stateroom with a verandah. These rooms have one large bed and a set of bunk beds that can be opened.

Disney Magic staterooms, like all cruise ship cabins, are small. However, you likely won’t spend too much time in the room since there are so many activities and amenities on the ship.

Most staterooms offer a split bathroom (one room with sink and toilet and one room with shower/tub), a mini-refrigerator, a nice-sized closet, a desk, a safe, a hairdryer, and a television. There’s also plenty of space for clothes and other belongings in several drawers.

Irons are not available in the room, but there are laundry rooms on the ship with iron facilities and washers and dryers. You can also purchase laundry detergent in these laundry rooms.

One of the first things I always do on my first day on the Disney Cruise Line is iron anything that is wrinkled. The ironing facilities can get a little busy throughout the trip.

Like on the other ships, passengers on the Disney Magic often like to decorate their doors with stateroom door magnets and participate in fish extenders .

I was surprised on this sailing that the number of fish extenders I saw seemed to be less than the other sailings I’d done. That may be because the ship wasn’t completely sold out.

Rapunzel's Royal Table on the Disney Magic Cruise Ship

What Restaurants Are on the Disney Magic?

The Disney Magic cruise ship, like the other ships, offers a rotational dining experience. This means that the serving team that you are assigned follows you throughout the sailing.

This is especially great for families with food allergies because you won’t have to explain everything each night at dinner. You’ll also have the same table number, which makes it easy to find where you need to be.

There are three main dining rooms on the ship – Rapunzel’s Royal Table, Lumiere’s, and Animator’s Palate. On three-day itineraries, you’ll visit each ship once.

For longer sailings, you’ll duplicate at least one location. On our four-day trip, we went to Rapunzel’s twice. The first night, we had the standard menu of the restaurant, and on the other night, we had the pirate night offering.

Rapunzel’s Royal Table is the newest restaurant on the Disney Magic, and is so fun. The restaurant features a live show with Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, and the characters even visit the tables (photos are allowed, but autographs aren’t given). I know some of our fellow passengers felt the restaurant was loud, but we enjoyed the show.

Lumiere’s offers a similar menu to Royal Palace and Royal Court on the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy , and Triton’s on the Disney Wonder. This Beauty and the Beast-themed restaurant feels a little more upscale than the other restaurants and has my favorite menu.

Animator’s Palate, also found on the other Disney Cruise Line ships, offers Pacific/Asian cuisine and feels the most casual. This version of the restaurant is a bit different than those on the other ships. It starts out black and white and slowly becomes colorized.

For other dining opportunities, you’ll find Cabanas, which offers a breakfast and lunch buffet. You won’t need reservations for meals in Cabanas.

Other quick-service dining locations include a pizza place, Gyro stand, and the Cove Cafe. The Cove Cafe is an adult-only, premium coffee shop. I always love getting coffee there – just be prepared that there is a charge for the drinks there.

Room service is offered 24 hours a day, except for disembarkation day when it isn’t offered. At Castaway Cay (for those itineraries that include a stop there), you’ll find two delicious BBQ restaurants on the family beach and an adult-only BBQ restaurant at Serenity Bay.

When I don’t have the kids with me, I love visiting the BBQ location at Serenity Bay. Wait staff from the ship travel to the island from the ship to serve at these three locations so you may see a familiar face.

For an additional fee, adults can choose to dine at Palo , the upscale Italian restaurant on board.  Palo’s often offers a brunch buffet on one day of the cruise.

If you want to eat at Palo, book it in advance so you’ll have your choice of times. You can book it whenever your booking window opens – depending on your Castaway Club status. If you can’t get a reservation, you can try to get one on boarding day. Just check the navigator app for the location to go to.

Palo on the Disney Cruise Line

Adult Areas on the Disney Magic

My kids always enjoy visiting the kids’ clubs on the Disney Cruise Line, leaving us with lots of time to explore the ship without them. There are several adult-only areas and activities on the Disney Magic.

The three bars/clubs in the After Hours section are adult-only in the evenings and offer entertainment and game shows. These include Fathoms, Keys Piano Bar, and O’Gills Pub (transformed into the Tangled’s Snuggly Duckling on one night of the cruise). There’s also the Promenade Lounge which offers entertainment throughout the cruise.

The Disney Magic also offers the Cove area of the ship, where you will find the Cove Cafe, as well as an adult-only pool (the quiet Cove pool). When my kids are in the kids’ clubs, I always enjoy grabbing a book and reading in the quiet area.

The Disney Magic also has a Senses Spa, which is a full-service spa offering lots of different services. There’s usually an open house on embarkation day so that you can learn more about the services offered. For a special experience, get a Rainforest pass so you can enjoy the relaxing Rainforest room.

Aquadunk on the Disney magic

Activities on the Ship

There are so many things to do onboard the Disney Magic that you’ll probably want to have at least one day at sea during your itinerary. The kids’ clubs are a real highlight.

There’s a nursery for babies, in addition to the Oceaneer Club, Oceaneer Lab, Edge, and Vibe (depending on your kids’ ages).

There are also pools, the Aqualab splash area, and the Disney Magic’s 3-story Aquadunk body water slide. At the main pool area, you’ll find FunnelVision TV, which offers movies and shows throughout the day.

Check the Navigator App to see the movie schedule. You’ll also find first-run Disney movies in the Buena Vista theater.

During your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to see many popular Disney characters, including Mickey and Minnie. Check the app to see the schedule. My kids always enjoyed seeing their favorite characters. Lines tend to be much shorter on cruise ships than in the parks.

Families will enjoy the various game shows and activities offered in D Lounge throughout the days. If you have younger kids, you may want to book an appointment at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. On the pirate night, kids can be transformed into pirates.

For adults, there are some alcohol-tasting classes that you can sign up for (additional fees apply). I’ve done a few of these and have always enjoyed them.

You’ll find a schedule on the Disney Cruise Line app or the website. If you do want to sign up for a beverage seminar, I’d recommend signing up when your booking window opens. They can fill up.

The Disney Magic at Sunset

Shows on the Ship

There are three Broadway-style shows that you can see on the Disney Magic – Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story, Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic, and Tangled: The Musical. Tangled is the newest, and is worth seeing!

On longer sailings, other entertainment is offered in the evenings when a show isn’t scheduled. On our four-day sailing, they offered a magic show. These shows vary, however, with different, traveling performers.

Itineraries on the Disney Magic

We experienced the Disney Magic on a four-day cruise from the Miami cruise port, stopping at Castaway Cay and Key West . The ship travels to other destinations throughout the year. While these may vary, you’ll often find sailings from Europe, New York City, and San Juan Puerto Rico.

The Disney Magic also hosts special cruises, including the Marvel Day at Sea, the Very Merrytime Cruise , and Halloween on the High Seas.

If you want to take a cruise on the Disney Magic ship, be sure to book with Get Away Today. When you mention Family Travel Magazine, you get an extra $25 on-board credit! Give their agents a call at 877-510-2929.

There’s certainly something MAGICAL about sailing with Disney Cruise Line …

shows on disney magic cruise

That is true no matter which of the fleet’s five ships you board for your voyage. (BTW, and that fleet will grow to EIGHT with the upcoming additions of the Disney Treasure , the Disney Destiny , and the Disney Adventure !) Here, though, we’re exploring the one that started it all — the OG Disney Cruise Line ship. This is the Ultimate Guide to Cruising on the Disney Magic !

From bow to stern, let’s explore everything you and your traveling crew can experience and enjoy on Disney Cruise Line’s FIRST ship!

Disney Magic Overview

The Disney Magic took her Maiden Voyage with passengers on July 30, 1998, bringing Disney characters, Disney stories, and — of course! — Disney MAGIC to the seas!

shows on disney magic cruise

The Magic was joined by her sister ship, the Disney Wonder , in August of 1999. Together, these two vessels are Disney Cruise Line’s Classic ships.

In size and structure (with 11 Decks and 875 Staterooms) as well as passenger capacity (2,713 passengers), the Magic is similar to the Disney Wonder. These two Classic ships are the smallest of the fleet. But that certainly doesn’t mean they’re lacking one ounce of fun and adventure!

A hallmark of a Disney Cruise Line ship is a statue of a beloved Disney character taking pride of place in the ship’s Atrium, welcoming guests aboard.

shows on disney magic cruise

On the Magic, that character is none other than Helmsman Mickey!

Beyond the similarities mentioned above, the Wonder and the Magic each have distinguishing features all their own… and one of those is WHERE the ships sail.

Disney Magic Destinations

The Disney Magic currently offers itineraries with cruise lengths ranging from 3 to 10 nights.

From Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Magic offers Bahamian and Western Caribbean voyages. Select Bahamian sailings depart from Port Canaveral, as well.  It’s worth noting that, starting this summer, some of the Magic’s Bahamian cruises will visit Disney’s upcoming island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point !

shows on disney magic cruise

Many of those same sailings will stop at Disney’s beloved Castaway Cay , too!

shows on disney magic cruise

The Magic also sails out of Galveston, Texas to the Western Caribbean. And two sailings from San Juan will visit the Southern Caribbean. An Eastern Caribbean voyage will sail from San Juan, as well. A wonderfully lengthy 10-night sailing will depart from Port Canaveral to the Eastern Caribbean in the summer of 2025. (And, yes, I am JEALOUS of those sailing on it!)

In fact, Disney Cruise Line recently released its Summer 2025 itineraries, and you can check them out here !

Click HERE to see the Summer 2025 Disney Cruise Line itineraries!

Disney magic entertainment.

The entertainment that’s unique to Disney Cruise Line kicks off RIGHT AWAY as your cruise begins with Mickey’s Sail-A-Wave Party.

shows on disney magic cruise

When I say “unique to Disney Cruise Line,” that’s because the pals joining you in the entertainment throughout the voyage are none other than Disney characters !

Select sailings also present Disney Cruise Line’s famous Pirate Night Deck Party complete with Fireworks at Sea!

shows on disney magic cruise

You may also experience the Frozen Deck Party on select itineraries.

shows on disney magic cruise

And although we don’t really want to talk about the end of your cruise just yet, it’s worth noting that the last night of your voyage features the ‘Til We Meet Again Party in the ship’s Atrium.

But when it comes to entertainment options, Disney Cruise Line may be best known for its Broadway-style productions — presented in the Walt Disney Theatre — that tie in characters, beloved stories, and treasured music from the Disney films.

shows on disney magic cruise

Guests on the Disney Magic can enjoy three shows, including Tangled: The Musical.

shows on disney magic cruise

This live retelling of Tangled presents characters from the film you know and love (including stunning puppetry that brings Maximus to life before your eyes), and sets that deliver the Snuggly Duckling Tavern right to you! You’ll also hear familiar tunes including “I See the Light.”

shows on disney magic cruise

But there are also THREE new songs that were written for this stage production: “Flower of Gold,” “Wanted Man” and “When the Princess Returns.”

Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story is exactly that: a TWIST on the beloved tale of Cinderella which picks up the story beyond the “Happily Ever After” at the end of the classic animated film.

shows on disney magic cruise

As the Disney Cruise Line website shares: “In this musical, the story revolves around the premise: What if Cinderella never got a chance to slip on the glass slipper, leaving those nasty stepsisters with another chance to get their claws into Prince Charming?”

While Tangled: The Musical and Twice Charmed each put the focus on a specific Disney Story, Disney Dreams — An Enchanted Classic brings together oodles and oodles of Disney stories, characters, and signature songs!

shows on disney magic cruise

In Disney Dreams, which Disney shares is a “musical about the power of dreams and family,” you’ll see familiar friends from Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella , and Pinocchio . (Oh, and a certain fairy makes an appearance, too!)

P.S. You can pay a visit to Preludes before the show to pick up some popcorn (or perhaps a cocktail) to enjoy in the theatre!

Disney Magic Water Features

Looking for more family fun? There are LOTS of ways that passengers of all ages can MAKE A SPLASH on Deck 9 (and upwards!) of the Disney Magic.

shows on disney magic cruise

Water areas for all ages include Goofy’s Pool and my personal favorite thing EVER, the Twist ‘n’ Spout water slide. (Why should kids get all the slides, huh? 😉 )

shows on disney magic cruise

Speaking of slides, I have a confession to make: I have yet to brave the AquaDunk , which is exclusive to the Disney Magic! This enclosed body slide (which requires that passengers be at least 48 inches tall to ride) presents a true 3-story PLUNGE that even goes over the side of the ship!

shows on disney magic cruise

I did, however, climb the stairs to the “launch” area on Deck 13 before I changed my mind, sooo …  PROGRESS! In all seriousness, this one is definitely for the thrill seekers out there, who are sure to have a blast!

Little ones have a splash space of their own with the Huey, Dewey, and Louie-themed AquaLab. This interactive play area is custom-made for sailors ages 3 and older , while the Nephew’s Splash Zone is dedicated to ages 3 and under .

For a more peaceful respite, the Quiet Cove Pool is reserved for guests over 18 years of age only. In addition to the pool (and its accompanying whirlpool spas), passengers in this exclusive area can visit Signals pool bar or sip on a specialty coffee or tea at the Cove Cafe .

Disney Magic Dining

Okay, now we’re REALLY talking… it’s time to chat about FOOD! The Disney Magic presents a wide array of options, starting with a Disney Cruise Line signature: Rotational Dining!

shows on disney magic cruise

Rotational Dining means that guests have the chance to enjoy dinner at ALL THREE of the ships main dining rooms, each with their own theme and specialty menus on select nights. The best part is that, as you move to a different restaurant each evening, so do your servers! They “rotate” right along with you so they can get to know your group’s dining preferences.

shows on disney magic cruise

The three Rotational Dining restaurants on the Disney Magic are Animator’s Palate, Lumiere’s and Rapunzel’s Royal Table.

Lumiere’s presents French cuisine for its specialty menu, served in a “Beauty and the Beast” -inspired setting… complete with roses that have dropped their petals intermingling with lighting on the ceiling.

shows on disney magic cruise

Animator’s Palate is an innovative restaurant where the show is drawings coming to life on screens all around you. You may experience two different shows, depending on the length of your cruise.

shows on disney magic cruise

Drawn to Magic is led by Sorcerer Mickey and displays the evolution of animation while guests dine on Pacific Island fusion cuisine. On 7-night and longer sailings, Animation Magic invites guests to draw their own characters and see them come alive in the restaurant.

shows on disney magic cruise

Rapunzel’s Royal Table is exclusive to the Disney Magic, and not only is it a restaurant…

shows on disney magic cruise

It’s also a Dinner Show on one evening of your voyage! When you dine at Rapunzel’s Royal Table, YOU are a guest at a banquet to celebrate Rapunzel’s birthday AND the anniversary of her return to the kingdom of Corona.

shows on disney magic cruise

“Blondie” herself, along with Flynn Rider, and a few of the Snuggly Duckling Thugs make appearances and entertain you throughout your meal.

Be aware that, in addition to evening dinner, one or more of the Rotational Dining restaurants may be open to serve a table service breakfast or lunch.

A number of other options are available throughout the day, as well. Cabanas hosts a massive buffet for both breakfast and lunch. Help yourself!

shows on disney magic cruise

Also on Deck 9, several Quick Service options serve classics like burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips and fries ( Duck-In Diner ), pizza ( Pinocchio’s Pizzeria ) and healthier fare like salads and sandwiches ( Daisy De-Lites ).

shows on disney magic cruise

P.S. Don’t forget to follow up any and all of that with some soft-serve ice cream at Eye Scream Treats ! You can also stop by Frozone Treats to enjoy a cooling fruit smoothie for an extra charge.

Still hungry 😉 ? Well, we’ve got some great news: the majority of items available on the Room Service menu are INCLUDED with your Disney Cruise!

shows on disney magic cruise

Even with all that, we’re not quite done with dining options just yet…

Disney Magic Adult Spaces

In addition to the Quiet Cove mentioned above, the Disney Magic also offers more areas reserved just for grown-ups. These include the fine dining restaurant, Palo , which may be booked for dinner for an additional charge per adult.

shows on disney magic cruise

Additionally, the famous Palo Brunch is available for booking during sea days! This option is incredibly popular, so advance booking through your Disney Cruise Line account is recommended.

shows on disney magic cruise

Be aware, as well, that Palo does have a dress code. The Disney Cruise Line website states: “ Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Also permitted is dress-casual attire with a polished look, such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts, dressy tops and lifestyle shoes. For brunch at Palo and Palo Steakhouse, dress shorts are acceptable. Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted.”

There is also the After Hours district, featuring three lounges for adults.

shows on disney magic cruise

These are O’Gills Pub (an Irish pub-meets-sports-bar), Keys (piano bar), and Fathoms which, in addition to bar service also presents adult entertainment such as comedians, karaoke, and dancing for late-night options.

And the new Soul Cat Lounge brings a New York City jazz lounge to the high seas!

shows on disney magic cruise

This Soul -inspired spot presents live music and offers a full bar that “serves up Manhattans, martinis and other Empire City-inspired craft cocktails.”

Adults might also opt to participate in a Mixology Class or  Beverage Tasting Seminar ! Featured liqueur and cocktail options include — but aren’t limited to — rum, tequila and margaritas, whiskey, champagne tastings, and more.

shows on disney magic cruise

These fun opportunities are offered for an additional fee, and advance booking is highly recommended.  (Seriously… these seminars are POPULAR!)

The Senses Spa & Salon offers a wide array of services and treatments. (And the Rainforest Room provides an especially relaxing oasis!) Select experiences are available for pre-booking, and you can stop by Senses to inquire about prices for the Rainforest Room and other treatments during your cruise. And the adjacent Fitness Center offers workout machines and classes.

And though this is not limited to adults, keep in mind that if you’d like to get a jog or two in, Deck 4 hosts a walking track!

Disney Magic Kids Clubs and Experiences

Now let’s turn our attention to areas on the ship dedicated to children, offering experiences tailored for ages from infants to teens!

Deck 5 is home to the It’s a Small World Nursery for ages 6 months to 3 years old .

The same deck also hosts Disney’s Oceaneer Club AND Disney’s Oceaneer Lab for ages 3 to 10 . What’s the difference between the two?

shows on disney magic cruise

Well, the Oceaneer Lab presents opportunities for learning fun, the Oceaneer Club features activities such as character experiences, story time, and play areas. (There are also specific guided activities for the littlest ones, ages 3 and 4.)

On the Magic, the Oceaneer Club features the following playful spaces: Andy’s Room (that’s Andy from Toy Story ), Marvel Super Hero Academy, Disney Junior, and Pixie Hollow.

shows on disney magic cruise

The Oceaneer Lab , meanwhile, presents the following play spaces: Animator’s Studio, Captain’s Workshop, Craft Studio, and The Wheelhouse (for “captains in training”)!

The spaces are connected so kids can enjoy all of the areas, and Youth Activities counselors are present at all times. Parents will want to know that spaces for your child can be pre-registered via your Disney Cruise Line account, and registration may also take place onboard the ship.

Tweens (ages 11 to 14) can gather at the Edge on Deck 9 to hang out, watch movies, play games and make friends during group activities with fun Disney counselors and more!

shows on disney magic cruise

Vibe  offers cruisers ages 14 to 17 similar activities geared to their age group, or simply a place to chill. And you want to know something really cool?

shows on disney magic cruise

Vibe is located in the ship’s Forward Funnel!

We’ve got one more thing to mention, though it’s not a club, per se. For an extra fee, your little Prince or Princess age 3 to 12 can get a makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique ! Disney Princess, knight, and sea captain-themed packages are available… and there’s an exclusive makeover for Pirate Party Nights!

Disney Magic Activities

Okay, now we’ve all spent some time with our own age groups. How about getting the whole gang back together for some fun? The Magic has got the family covered. D Lounge is the place to be for fun events like family game shows and trivia, dance parties and more!

shows on disney magic cruise

Catch a movie on the big screen at the Buena Vista Theatre ! You might choose to watch a Disney animated classic, or maybe a Star Wars or Marvel flick. You never know… your sailing just might feature a first-run Disney feature film at sea! ( “Funnel Vision” on the pool deck shows movies on the big screen, too!)

You can find basketball courts and ping-pong tables on the Wide World of Sports Deck . But don’t look for shuffleboard here… that’s on Deck 4. 😉

Let’s see… it feels like I’m forgetting something… OH, YEAH! You can meet, hug, get autographs from and pose for pictures with your favorite DISNEY PALS !

shows on disney magic cruise

Sailing with you are the Fab Five (that’s Mickey and the gang), Disney Princesses, friends from Frozen , and more! Be aware that, while all Character Greetings are included with your cruise, select Greeting times (such as Princess Gatherings) may require advance booking.

Disney Magic Staterooms

The Disney Magic offers four categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Verandah, and Concierge . Many of the rooms feature Disney’s innovative split bathroom which allows more guests in a cabin the chance to get ready at one time.

shows on disney magic cruise

While each category boasts amenities such as premium mattresses and linens, a 22″ LCD flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, and a surprising amount of storage space, there are many more details to explore among the varying categories, so we’ve dedicated a page to those options here .

Discover the staterooms, dining options, entertainment, and more that await cruisegoers sailing on the Disney Magic.

Planning to set sail on a cruise aboard the Disney Magic? The inaugural Disney Cruise Line ship will forever hold a special place in the history of the most magical cruise line for being the ship that started it all. On board, you’ll find stunning entertainment, fun characters, and fantastic dining to enjoy. We’re taking you through a full guide of everything you’ll find on the Disney Magic!

About the Disney Magic

  • Entertainment

DLR Magazine Annual Digital Subscription

Wdw magazine annual digital subscription, wdw magazine monthly digital subscription.

The Disney Magic was the inaugural Disney Cruise Line ship, making it a particularly special one in the fleet. The ship had its maiden voyage on July 30, 1998, sailing to Nassau, Bahamas with a stop at Castaway Cay. While the ship originally hosted weekly cruises through the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, it expanded over time to include sailings to the West Coast, and Europe as well.

The ship was designed with the inspiration of the historic RMS Queen Mary and can fit up to 2,713 passengers. The ship offers a variety of staterooms, including Inside Staterooms, and Outside Staterooms that offer guests a verandah to enjoy the view of the ocean.

The Disney Magic Stern features Goofy, shown painting the logo himself. Inside the ship you’ll find the exquisite entertainment and dining options the Disney Cruise Line has come to be known for. Along with fine dining like Palo and Lumiere’s, you can enjoy character dining with the Tangled-inspired Rapunzel’s Royal Table. In total, there are 11 decks  to explore on the Disney Magic, and we’re sharing a bit more of what you can find below!

Where Does the Disney Magic Sail?

For 2024 and 2025 sailings, the Disney Magic departs from ports at Port Canaveral in Florida, Galveston in Texas, New Orleans in Louisiana, San Diego in California, and San Juan in Puerto Rico. The ship sails to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Meixco, and the Panama Canal on various length trips, anywhere from three to seven nights.

Staterooms on the Disney Magic

In total, there are 875 staterooms on the Disney Magic, about two-thirds of what you’ll find on the newest ship, the Disney Wish. In total, there are 262 Inside Staterooms, and 613 Outside Staterooms (229 with an oceanview, and 384 with a verandah). There are also a variety of 22 suites onboard for a larger living space.

When it comes to choosing accommodations, you can choose from Concierge, which is the largest accommodation with a private verandah. Or, you can choose a non-concierge room with a private verandah, the second largest room available. There are also Oceanview rooms offering a porthole or two, as well as Inside Staterooms with no view outside.

Inside Staterooms

On the Disney Magic, you’ll have one inside stateroom option: a Standard Inside Stateroom . There is no exterior or ocean view to be found in these rooms, but they do sleep up to four adults in total. Your two options are:

  • Deluxe Inside Stateroom
  • Standard Inside Stateroom

The Deluxe Inside Stateroom has more square footage than the Standard Inside Stateroom , with 214 sq. ft. versus 184 sq. ft. Both types of rooms can sleep up to three or four, with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed available. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom also comes with a “split bath,” meaning there’s one bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower, and tub, then a half bathroom with a vanity, sink, and toilet. By comparison, the Standard Inside Stateroom offers one full bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower and tub.

Oceanview Staterooms

The Oceanview Staterooms offer a few of the sea from your room through one or two portholes. While these won’t have a deck for you to go outside, you will be able to enjoy some stunning views from a generously sized window overlooking the ocean. There’s just one option for this type of room:

  • Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom

The Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms come with either one large porthole window or two smaller porthole windows. Each room sleeps up to three or four, with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed available.

Verandah Staterooms

If you want to spend some time gazing at the beautiful ocean views, you’ll want to consider a room with a private verandah . There are two choices on board the Disney Magic:

  • Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah
  • Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah  has a queen bed, a single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed, meaning it sleeps three or four people. For a larger group, you’ll want the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah , which sleeps up to five with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, wall pull-down bed, and upper berth pull-down bed. Both options come with their own private verandah.

Being a Princess is Exhausting – Mermaid Solid Color Tote

Being a princess is exhausting – mermaid watercolor tote, dlr castle by sunset art quality poster with hanger, issue 95 – once upon a time, concierge staterooms.

The Concierge rooms are the Disney Magic’s most luxurious accommodations. T here are four  types of concierge staterooms :

  • Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah
  • Concierge 2-Bedroom Suite with Verandah
  • Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah
  • Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom

The Concierge Royal Suites have art deco décor, with two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, a dining salon, and more. They can sleep up to seven, making this ideal for larger families or groups. The 1-Bedroom Suite has a separate bedroom, 1.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, and a wet bar, and can sleep up to five. The 2-Bedroom Suite has two separate bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, and can sleep up to seven. Finally, the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom sleeps up to five and also comes with a private verandah.

Dining on the Disney Magic

Just like all of Disney Cruise Line’s ships, the Disney Magic comes with a variety of different dining options. Whether you are looking for a full meal, a character dining experience, or just a quick bite to eat, you’ll find it on board the ship.

Exclusive to the Disney Magic, Rapunzel’s Royal Table is a dining experience inspired by the beloved story of Disney’s “Tangled.” This dining experience features lively entertainment that transports Disney Magic guests to the kingdom of Corona for an evening of music, themed food offerings and interactive fun. (Matt Stroshane, photographer)

Like all other Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Magic offers rotational dining for dinners. This style of dining allows you to try each of the main restaurants onboard during your sailing, though you can choose to skip a night or two of rotational dining and secure a reservation at a different restaurant not included with your sailing instead (at an additional cost). Additionally, you can choose to order room service. Here’s a look at all of the dinner options on the Disney Magic :

  • Rapunzel’s Royal Table
  • Animator’s Palate
  • Palo Steakhouse (reservations required)
  • Royal Court Tea (reservations required)

Aside from rotational dining, you’ll also find casual dining onboard that does not require a reservation:

  • Duck-In Diner
  • Daisy’s De-Lites
  • Eye Scream Treats
  • Frozone Treats
  • Pinocchio’s Pizzeria

For adults, there are also four different bars and lounges available on the ship:

  • O’Gills Pub
  • Soul Cat Lounge

Entertainment on the Disney Magic

Disney Magic review: What it's like to sail the original Disney ship 25 years later

Summer Hull

If cars are often considered classics after 25 years, how does that translate to a popular cruise ship that is sailing toward its 25th birthday?

Having sailed on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, Disney Wish , which is still in its first year of operations, along with both Disney Dream and Disney Wonder , I was curious how my family would find things on the oldest ship in Disney's fleet: Disney Magic.

Believe it or not, it's been almost 25 years since Magic first set sail in 1998, so it truly is an older ship by U.S. cruise line standards.

However, age is just a number, as they say, so I was excited to experience the Disney ship that started it all. After more than two decades of service, would it be a timeless classic or a less-impressive version of the younger and bigger Disney ships?

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

On a chilly January morning, my family and I packed our Mickey ears and made the two-hour drive to the ship's winter home port of Galveston, Texas, ready to find out how Disney Magic stands up to the other ships in the fleet.

How old is Disney Magic?

Disney Magic set sail on its maiden voyage July 30, 1998, from Florida to the Bahamas. However, the ship has had work done over the years, and not every piece of it is rapidly approaching 25 years old.

For example, some elements of the ship are just 5 years old because they were added or revamped during Magic's last dry dock, when the cruise line took the opportunity to make some upgrades.

Updated attractions include the teen club Vibe, the adults-only coffee shop Cove Cave and the only "Tangled-" themed restaurant on the ocean: Rapunzel's Royal Table.

shows on disney magic cruise

Dry-dock refurbishments are a pretty routine occurrence, taking place every five years or so. That means the ship isn't stuck in a 1998 time warp.

Instead, it's quite similar in many ways to all its fleetmates except Disney Wish, which is really a part of the next generation of Disney ships rather than a continuation of the look and feel of the first four.

In other words, don't let the age of Disney Magic scare you.

The size of Disney Magic

Disney Magic may be the oldest (and tied with Disney Wonder for the fleet's smallest ship), but it's still a large ship at 11 decks high and 984 feet long. The 875-cabin vessel holds 3,658 passengers — 2,713 cruisers and about 945 crew members.

The ship features two theaters, five kids clubs, a spa, four restaurants (plus a buffet and quick-service food stalls) and three pools. In other words, you'll stay busy exploring and enjoying the ship for at least several days.

Restaurants and food on Disney Magic

Disney Magic debuted the cruise line's rotational dining system, which is unique in the cruise industry.

Throughout the cruise, passengers rotate through three complimentary dining venues, and your serving team joins you in the different restaurants each night. Other dining options include the extra-fee, adults-only restaurant, Disney Cruise Line's dedicated Italian restaurant. There are also casual grab-and-go venues on the pool deck.

Rapunzel's Royal Table

My favorite of the three included rotational restaurants is Rapunzel's Royal Table, found only on Disney Magic. Here, you get the unique experience of attending Rapunzel's birthday celebration.

Floating lanterns dot the ceiling, and some of the stars of "Tangled" perform a musical show on a central stage while you dine. Eventually, many of the characters work their way around the room, so you can say hi to the movie's villains and heroes. This dinner show was most similar to the Tiana-themed restaurant on Disney Wonder, which is also excellent.

Pro tip: Get the shrimp appetizer if you enjoy seafood — get two if you really enjoy seafood.

shows on disney magic cruise

Lumiere's

The most non-descript of the three main dining rooms on Disney Magic is Lumiere's, which is "Beauty and the Beast" inspired. However, you'll only know that from the roses on the ceiling and the painting on one wall.

Otherwise, it's just a large restaurant that gives off major art deco vibes. If you need to miss a restaurant in favor of a meal at Palo or relaxing in your room, I'd pick this one as it's the most generic of the three.

shows on disney magic cruise

Animator's Palate

All original four Disney ships have a version of Animator's Palate, though it varies a bit on each ship.

The one on Disney Magic starts in black and white, but the room and the wait staff gain colorful adornments throughout the course of the meal. A special guest makes an appearance during the grand finale, which is when things really transform into full color, accompanied with exciting music and special effects.

The special guest (spoiler alert: Mickey in his rarely worn Sorcerer's Apprentice outfit) dances his way all around the room, so have your camera ready.

Our turn in Animator's Palate happened on the final night of our cruise, so the entire wait staff came out for a round of well-deserved applause with Mickey, and it was honestly pretty emotional.

You do not want to leave early from this meal, so order extra dessert if you must and stay put until the end.

The most popular dish here may be the black truffle pasta purseittes appetizer, as it has quite the following, though it wasn't my personal favorite. The smoked salmon tartar and vegetarian black bean chipotle cakes were the hits at our table.

shows on disney magic cruise

The best $45 you can spend onboard a Disney cruise , to me, is unquestionably a meal at Palo.

This adults-only restaurant is open for brunch and dinner, and you can't go wrong with either. There are sometimes last-minute openings. However, this is one meal you'll want to book as far out as possible as it's popular and has limited seating.

This is the only restaurant on Disney Magic where food costs extra, but the cost is reasonable for what you get. The essentially all-you-want-to-enjoy brunch costs $45 with can't-miss items such as chicken Parmesan, wild mushroom ravioli, a seafood antipasti plate and chocolate souffle, along with flatbreads, omelets, waffles and more.

Favorite grab-and-go spots

Out on deck, you'll also find many grab-and-go outlets, which are also included in your cruise fare. These venues serve up such basics as soft serve ice cream, pizza, fries and chicken tenders, but two of these fast-food stations were surprise hits.

Daisy's De Lites mainly offers fruits, salads and cookies, but it also has a build-your-own chicken and rice bowl that was absolutely fantastic. Load your bowl up with everything on offer for the best results.

Another nice surprise was the Duck-In Diner counter that served pita, hummus and gyros — a welcome change from the admittedly also-delicious kid staples of tenders and fries.

Waterslide on Disney Magic

If you want a thrilling ride on a Disney ship, by far, the winner in that category is found on Disney Magic with its mildly terrifying AquaDunk.

Where the new AquaMouse on Disney Wish is cute and family-friendly, the AquaDunk is something else entirely, making it an alluring attraction for the tween and teen crew.

On this waterslide, you stand in a booth at the highest point on the ship. When it's your turn, the floor drops out beneath you, and you fall 40 feet only to be shot about 18 feet out over the side of the ship.

For this slide, not only do you have to be at least 4 feet tall, but you have to be OK with climbing into an enclosed capsule, having the door shut, hearing that countdown and then dropping and getting soaked.

shows on disney magic cruise

I tried it once, and that was enough for me to say I've done it. If that's too intense for you or your kids, don't worry. There's a more traditional waterslide on Disney Magic, too. The Twist 'n' Spout slide by the AquaLab was the favorite spot for my 7-year-old.

Pools on Disney Magic

Disney Magic has a lot of strengths, but the pools are pretty basic.

Options include the AquaLab pool, Goofy's main pool between the two funnels, a small splash area and the adult pool area. If you go during off hours, such as early or late in the day, it's a great experience. However, the pools aren't nearly large enough for the popularity of a midday swim.

shows on disney magic cruise

The adult pool area was my personal favorite of the three pools, though it's not nearly as cool looking as the infinity pool on Disney Wish.

shows on disney magic cruise

In the interest of setting realistic expectations, expect pools to look much more like this (or worse) during the heat of the day.

Kid clubs on Disney Magic

Small world nursery.

While most of the kid clubs on Disney cruises are included, the one exception across all the ships is for the Small World Nursery. It's available for little ones from 6 months to 3 years old at a rate of $4.50 per half hour. This was a relatively basic space compared to the other kid clubs, but this age range is the easiest to impress.

Pro tip: There is a one-way mirror so you can check on your little one without them seeing you.

shows on disney magic cruise

Oceaneer's Club and Lab

The heart of Disney Cruise Line's kid clubs are the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, which are connected and available to kids from ages 3 to 12 who are potty trained. Here, you'll find a "Toy Story-" themed slide, crafts, video games, organized activities, competitions, an Avenger's area and more.

Kids can enjoy free play or color, play video games or go on the slide at their own pace, but the youth staff also lead frequent group activities throughout the day. These may be a better fit for kids who need a little more support and structure to their fun.

My 7-year-old would consistently eat her dinner as fast as possible to head here and keep playing.

There's no fee and no reservations required to come and play in these clubs. However, you will need to get a Magic Band from the kids club that is used to track the kiddos while they are in the clubs. If you return it on the last night of the cruise, you won't be charged for its use.

shows on disney magic cruise

Once your kiddo turns 11 (or 10 with parent permission and enough space), they can start visiting Edge, which has a submarine-under-the-sea look on Disney Magic.

It's nearly identical to the Edge club on Disney Wonder. Youth staff lead organized activities and games in Edge at certain times during the day, but it also serves as a casual tween hangout spot the rest of the time.

shows on disney magic cruise

The teen club, Vibe, is open for to those ages 14 to 17, though you can get in a year early with parent permission, which is what my 13-year-old chose. Both Vibe and Edge are come-and-go clubs that don't scan your kids in and out or track them with any sort of band.

The youth staff offer some structured games and activities, but Vibe is largely a place to hang out, play video games and get to know other teens.

Pro tip: If your teen wants to make friends on the ship, have them be active and present in the teen club on the first day when there are ice-breaker activities. Lots of unofficial cruise packs of friends form on day one, and then the teens roam the ship together, not necessarily hanging out in the club.

Rooms on Disney Magic

I'm sure there are some differences among the cabins on Disney Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy, but they all look the same to me.

The decor is heavy on navy, white, stripes and wood. Below is our cabin on Magic, which slept the three of us comfortably with the couch converting to a single bed. Unlike in some cabins we've had, this one did not have a bed that came down from the ceiling.

It did feature the split bathroom design Disney Cruise Line is known for. One small bathroom contains the sink and toilet, and a separate little room has another sink and a tub/shower combo. The layout is ideal for getting multiple people ready for the day or for bed at the same time.

shows on disney magic cruise

Here's a look at our most recent cabin on Disney Dream, as a contrast to Disney Magic (or lack of contrast, as the case may be).

Adult areas on Disney Magic

In keeping with the approach on the other original Disney ships, the adult bars and lounges on Disney Magic are largely clustered in the same area dubbed After Hours.

Here you'll find Keys, a piano bar and lounge with some top-notch whiskey; O'Gills Pub, which is a great place for a pint or to watch sports; and Fathoms, which is a mixed-use lounge that often serves as a meeting point for excursions or family-friendly activities during the day and as a club at night.

shows on disney magic cruise

I enjoyed listening to a few songs in Keys after dinner a few nights. However, none of these spaces were fully my cup of tea, mainly because they were dark and not super inviting.

Also, the lounges' layouts were not conducive to social interaction among the guests due to an emphasis on clustered seating rather than communal bar space. Or, maybe it's just the luck of the draw, and the cruisers on Disney Magic were less interested in chatting with their shipmates than on my previous cruise on Disney Wish.

The unexpected upside of this was that I did not feel like I was missing out by ditching the bars for my room, where I could enjoy a glass of wine on my balcony.

Pro tip: This adult area of the ship is where you will find the most comfortable port holes for photos, reading a book or relaxing and enjoying the ride at sea.

Shows on Disney Magic

If you ever get the chance to sail on Disney Magic — or any of the Disney ships — don't miss the Sail Away party that takes place shortly after the muster drill as the ship pulls out to sea. It's the most fun way to kick your vacation into high gear. Arrive a few minutes early to get a spot by the stage, especially if you have little kids.

shows on disney magic cruise

Disney Magic, like the other Disney ships, has a movie theater where you can see first-run Disney movies. Since there is only one movie theater on Magic, it offers a smaller choice of movies than on the ships with two theaters, but it's still a nice selection.

shows on disney magic cruise

The evening Broadway-caliber shows currently on Disney Magic are:

  • "Tangled: The Musical."
  • "Disney Dreams — An Enchanted Classic."
  • "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story."

We skipped "Disney Dreams," as it was a repeat of what we'd seen on Disney Wonder. However, all of these shows are worth seeing, with "Tangled" the strongest of the three offerings. "Tangled" and "Twice Charmed" are unique to Disney Magic, in case you need to prioritize.

Fewer temptations to spend money on Disney Magic

On the new Disney Wish, I found an abundance of temptations to spend money around every turn.

These included alcoholic popsicle drinks, the ice cream shop the kids passed multiple times per day (with see-through glass walls, naturally), the Star Wars-themed bar that jumps through hyperspace , the Bayou with pay-to-eat beignets, Nightingale's next to the kid's club with the cocktails served in balls of ice, the coffee and cocktails in the ship's version of a buffet, Marceline Market and so many other fun and enticing ways to part with your dollars.

While Disney Magic does not lack places to buy a cocktail, it does not have a sweet shop, Untangled hair salon, Hook's Barbery with the "hidden" drink cabinet or specialty snacks like beignets that aren't included in your cruise fare.

I found it easier than on Wish to simply enjoy what comes with the experience instead of feeling like you need to spend $10, $20, $50 or more several times a day to get the full experience.

How I wish they'd make Magic more magical

I'd love for Disney Magic to add a slide into the kids club, a brighter and airier spa and some other elements of Disney Wish that we liked, but that's easier said than done. I do have a shorter list of more realistic upgrades I'd love to see on Disney Magic in the coming years.

This original Disney ship would benefit from at least one brighter bar or lounge, as the ship can feel cavernous at times. As I mentioned, for me, the bars weren't inviting spaces when compared to my own cabin's balcony. This is in stark contrast to all the beautiful bars and lounges on Wish I was excited to spend time in.

shows on disney magic cruise

It would also be a real plus if Disney Magic integrated a magical scavenger hunt type of activity that you see on other Disney ships. This would layer in one more thing for the kids to do on a sea day or between other activities.

Also, this is personal preference, but while I enjoy and appreciate the bold nautical theme of the classic Disney ships, I do think there's a way to pull that off without the striped decor in the staterooms that may have sailed a touch passed its prime.

Here's a view of a Disney Wish cabin, showing the updated decor I'd love to see on Disney Magic. It retains the deep blue but steps away from the dated stripes.

Overall impressions

Disney Magic was a fun and thoroughly enjoyable ship. It doesn't feel old, but it is smaller and a touch more quaint than the line's newest ships.

The ship's smaller footprint with fewer onboard temptations to spend money can be a benefit in that it's easier to get around and just enjoy — not only the ship but also where it's going.

Without all the pay-to-enjoy distractions, my family went to more of the gameshows, spent more time at the pools or reading on the balcony and even watched the baby crawling races, which sound bizarre but are very entertaining.

I would not hesitate to sail on Disney Magic again in its 25th year or in the future — no matter how many newer and bigger Disney cruise ships make their debuts.

Disney Magic Cruise: Pro Tips for an Epic Voyage

Jill Robbins Avatar

Jill Robbins

disney cruise ship

The  Disney Magic’s maiden voyage was on July 30, 1998. The Disney Magic  is the first ship in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet of now five ships. The Disney Magic is nearly identical in layout to the Disney Wonder, which rolled out in August of 1999.

If you’re trying to decide what Disney Cruise Line vessel is the right one for you, here’s a deep dive into what the Disney Magic  offers, although I choose my cruises based on the sailing dates and where they’re going versus choosing based on ship. I’ve sailed four of the five ships in Disney’s fleet. I’ve been on the Magic  twice, and I’m currently scheduled for a third cruise on Disney Cruise Line’s OG ship.

Here’s what it’s like to set sail on the  Disney Magic !

Ship Basics

The Disney Magic  is 984 feet long, has 11 decks, and 875 staterooms that can accommodate a maximum of 2,700 passengers and a crew of 950. The ship’s atrium features Art Deco styling and a statue of Yeoman Mickey. All Disney ships have unique stern art, and the Disney Magic’s stern art features Goofy painting the ship’s logo.

Choose the Itineraries Over Choosing the Ship

I recommend choosing your Disney cruise based on what dates are good for you and where the ship is going. The ships are similar enough to one another that your experience isn’t going to vary widely from ship to ship, so take the vacation that works for you timewise and go where you want to go, whether that’s the Bahamas, Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, or one of Disney’s new sailings in Australia and New Zealand.

Unless, of course, you’re chasing a grand slam like me. A grand slam is a term coined by the passengers to indicate they’ve sailed on all of Disney Cruise Line’s vessels. There are currently five, with the new Disney Treasure  to be released in 2024.

Staterooms on the Disney Magic

The types of staterooms on the  Disney Magic  are Concierge, Oceanview with Verandah, and Inside. Concierge is Disney Cruise Line’s suite class. The staterooms are more spacious and have enhanced in-room amenities, access to a concierge lounge, and dedicated shoreside and onboard teams to assist them. Sailing concierge has other perks, such as priority embarkation and disembarkation and the first choice of shore excursions and onboard activities.

Of course, this luxury and convenience comes with a price: Concierge staterooms are the most expensive.

The other stateroom categories are pretty much what they sound like, except Disney uses the word ‘verandah’ whereas most other cruise lines use the word balcony. An Oceanview stateroom will have portholes to look out of, and an inside stateroom will have no windows. The inside staterooms are the least expensive.

Most to Least Expensive – Been There, Done That

I’ve stayed in two types of staterooms on board the Disney Magic  – Deluxe Inside and Family Concierge Stateroom with Verandah. We booked the inside stateroom when we booked a cruise somewhat last minute. We chose the cheapest room possible and ended up getting an upgrade prior to sail. The upgrade gave us a Deluxe Inside versus regular Inside stateroom. The difference was that the upgraded stateroom had a split bath.

The Family Concierge Stateroom was exactly like a regular verandah stateroom but it had the blue and cream concierge decor and concierge amenities, like elevated toiletries, access to the concierge lounge, and pre-arrival services.

Rotational Dining on the Disney Magic

Rotational dining is unique to Disney Cruise Line. You’ll be assigned a different dining room each night of your cruise, which is included in the price of your cruise. The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App will tell you where you eat each night.

Join our Private Disney FB Group for more tips! JOIN HERE

The cool thing about rotational dining is that your servers go with you. That’s right; you won’t have different servers in each dining room. Your servers will follow you from location to location, and they will make every effort to get to know you and your family throughout the cruise. The Disney Magic  has three main dining rooms, Lumiere’s (Deck 3 midship), Rapunzel’s Royal Table (Deck 3 aft), and Animator’s Palate (Deck 4 aft.)

Each menu includes bread service. The bread comes with butter and some type of dip or sauce. You’ll also find at least one plant-based option and a “lighter notes” menu, including a salad, a plain steak, plain salmon, and a plain chicken breast. Each venue has unique desserts, a signature dessert, and a sugar-free dessert option.

Early or late dining

Guests will choose between early or late dining when booking their Disney Magic  cruise. Early seating is at 5:45 p.m., and second seating is at 8:00 p.m. This may vary by cruise, and when the  Disney Magic  is in European ports, the dining times may be pushed later. Once you choose, you’re locked in, and there is no flipping back and forth between early or late seatings.

Beauty and the Beast inspires Lumiere’s decor, which is named after everyone’s favorite candlestick. The appetizer menu choices included a duck confit, deep-fried brie, and escargot.

The soup and salad menu included French onion soup, leek and potato soup, and a  Bosc pear salad. Mains included pasta with lobster and tomato, oven-baked salmon, roasted duck, rack of lamb, and chateaubriand.

The dessert list included:

  • A Grand Marnier souffle.
  • Apple tartine.
  • Strawberry shortcake sundae.
  • Creme brulee.
  • A chocolate sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup with chocolate ganache.

The menu is rich, luxurious, and perfect entry-level French cuisine that will make both more sophisticated palates and picky eaters happy. And, if you’ve been on the Disney Dream and think this menu sounds similar to Royal Palace, you’re spot on. The menu is the same, as is the layout of the restaurant.

Rapunzel’s Royal Table

Rapunzel’s Royal Table is straight out of Tangled down to the lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Rapunzel, Flynn Ryder, and two Snuggle Ducking Ruffians entertain guests during the meal. For me, it ties Animator’s Palate for the best dinner entertainment. Appetizers include a charcuterie board, crispy shrimp, and tuna tartare. Soup and salad offerings include a creamy potato soup, broccoli and asparagus soup, and a wedge salad.

The main dishes include pan-seared bass, roast chicken, and prime rib of beef.

 The featured desserts are:

  • Sweet fry bread with powdered sugar and hazelnut spread.
  • Cupcake sundae.
  • Apple strudel.
  • Creme brulee cheesecake.
  • Black forest tower.

Although I enjoyed the entertainment, this is my least favorite food, not just on the Magic but the entire fleet. The food is heavy, and there’s not a lot of green.

Animator’s Palate

I’ll preface this by saying I adore Animator’s Palate, my favorite restaurant across the fleet. I’m bummed that the  Disney Wish  doesn’t have it. Animator’s Palate is your favorite Disney animation coming to life before your eyes. The entertainment is truly spectacular. The  Magic  has everyone’s favorite Animation Magic, which is truly one of my favorite parts of Animator’s Palate and Disney Cruising in general. Guests are given a placemat to draw on when they first sit down to your meal. The servers will collect your placemats, and your drawings will become a special, magical part of the entertainment.

Delicious Food

The food at Animator’s Palate is also my favorite of the three main dining rooms. Appetizers include smoked salmon tartare, slice serrano ham, black truffle pasta, and a tomato tart. The choices for soups and salads are butternut squash soup, baked potato cheddar soup, an arugula salad, and a chicken salad.

Mains are pasta bolognese, tuna steak, thyme-seasoned chicken breast, herb-crusted pork, and ginger-dusted beef tenderloin with wasabi mashed potatoes that are a fantastic explosion of flavors – and I’m not a huge red meat eater.

Desserts at the Animator’s Palate include

  • A lemon icebox pie.
  • Cookies and cream sundae.
  • Crunchy walnut cake.
  • Cheesecake with a layer of chocolate fudge.

Other Included Dining On the Disney Magic

There are many other places to eat included in the cost of your cruise.

Cabana’s is the Disney Magic’s  buffet eatery. Serving a wide variety of items for both breakfast and lunch, Cabana’s offers indoor and outdoor seating.

Room Service

Most room service items on the Disney Magic  are included in the cost of your cruise. A variety of soups, salads, pizza, sandwiches, and desserts can be delivered to your room 24 hours a day. Really .

Certain items on the room service menu are not free, so make sure you’re paying attention when you order. Alcohol, canned soda, and snacks such as candy and popcorn aren’t included.

Duck-In Diner

Duck-In Diner serves middle eastern style shwarmas, burgers, and hot dogs.

Pinocchio’s Pizza

Enjoy a slice of cheesy, delicious pizza pie.

Eye Scream Treats

Unlimited soft serve is a Disney Cruise Line favorite.

Frozone Treats

The smoothies at Frozone Treats are not included in the cost of your cruise.

Daisy’s DeLites

This pool deck quick service option has lighter options such as fruit, sandwiches, salads, and bowls. Daisy’s and Pinnochio’s Pizza tie for my favorite spots to eat on board the Disney Magic . I had a couscous bowl with butternut squash and other veggies at Daisy’s on the Magic that’s my favorite thing I’ve eaten on a Disney Cruise, hand’s down.

Preludes is the concession stand near the theater that serves popcorn that you can smell a mile away, candy and other snacks, sodas, and alcohol. You can also order from a server in the theater before the show starts.

The Cove Cafe serves specialty coffee and tea, with and without alcohol. Aside from the self-service coffee machine in the Concierge Lounge, the Cove Cafe is the only place to get decent coffee on the ship, and if you like your morning java, make sure you’re budgeting for it.

While the drinks at the Cove Cafe aren’t included in the cost of your cruise, the snacks are.

There are usually a variety of pastries in a display case that are free to adult guests. The Cove Cafe is located in the adult-only area of the ship. If you visit between 5:00-7:00 p.m., you might get lucky and find antipasto.

Adult Fine Dining on the Disney Magic

The  Magic has one adult-only fine dining venue, Palo. If you’re looking for a sans kids dinner or brunch date, a coveted reservation at Palo is the way to go.

Disney Magic Adult Dining Experience: Palo

Palo serves dinner and brunch on sea days. Dinner is $45 per person, and brunch is $40 per person. The prices are always subject to change. I’m a big fan of Palo Brunch. Although the buffet portion of Palo Brunch is no more, the current menu is more than ample, and you’re brought an antipasto tray early on in the meal with most of the things the old buffet used to have.

The brunch menu includes tasty delights such as soups, waffles and pancakes, benedicts and omelets, and Italian-inspired dishes such as calzones, pizza, pasta, and chicken parmesan. The current dessert menu includes a light vanilla berry panna cotta, a limoncello torte, and traditional tiramisu. While I can’t find fault with the desserts, the brunch menu is so excellent and robust that I didn’t have much room. I didn’t think any of the desserts were worth saving room for and I recommend you go for it and sample as much of the brunch menu as you can hold.

They’ll keep bringing you food as long as you can handle it.

For dinner, Palo has an extensive selection of steaks and seafood that are a little more thoughtfully prepared than what you’ll find on the main dining room menus. If you’re a foodie or really crave a good steak or premium seafood, book your dinner at Palo. If it comes down to the choice between Palo dinner and Palo brunch on the Magic, the brunch is an easy winner. .

Palo Dress Code

Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Dress casual attire with a polished look is permitted (such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts and blouses, and lifestyle shoes). Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear, and sports attire is not permitted.

Bars on the Disney Magic

Fathoms, Keys, and O’Gill’s Pub are open to guests of all ages before 7:00 p.m. After that, they are adults only.

Fathoms is an ocean-inspired retreat featuring games, variety acts, silent disco, live music, and more.

Keys is a piano bar with a sophisticated feel. Adults can listen to live music, enjoy a drink, and take in ocean views.

O’Gill’s Pub

O’Gill’s Pub is an Irish-themed sports bar and lounge where guests can catch sports on the big-screen TVs or enjoy a trivia game.

A pool bar located near the adult-only pool.

Promenade Lounge

This “blink and you’ll miss it” lounge on Lounge on Deck 3 is a fun, tucked-away spot to enjoy a cocktail before dinner.

Looking for a family-friendly place to hang out and enjoy games that everyone can play? Check out the D Lounge on Deck 4 for family quiz shows, karaoke, and more.

Kids Activities On the Disney Magic

Kids clubs are included on the Disney Magic  cruise and all Disney Cruise Ships. There are three kid’s clubs that young passengers can go on based on age, the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, Edge, and Vibe. There’s also a nursery.

The kid’s clubs are open all day and all evening without a break, and there’s no limit to how long a child can stay in the clubs. The clubs will offer an open house on the first day and at various points during the cruise – check the Navigator App for times. Anyone can check out the clubs during Open House. Otherwise, only the kids registered with the clubs can be in them.

Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab

These co-located kid’s clubs are for kids three to 12. Kids must be potty trained. The Oceaneer Lab’s activities are a little more educational-focused than the Oceaneer Club. From indoor play elements themed around Pixar characters to self-directed fun to organized games, the Oceanear Club is special all the way around.

Edge is the Disney Magic’s  tween club for kids 11-13.

Vibe is the Disney Magic’s  teen club for kids 14-17.

It’s a Small World Nursery

The nursery is not included in the cost of your cruise, and reservations are required. Kids between six months and three years old can go to the nursery.

Pools and Slides on the Disney Magic

The Disney Magic  has three themed pools and two waterslides. The kid’s pool, the Huey, Dewey and Louie Pool, is two feet deep, and the family pool, Goofy’s Pool, is about four feet deep. Both are located on Deck 9. There are two hot tubs near Goofy’s Pool.

The Quiet Cove Pool is adult-only and has a connecting bar and hot tubs. Disney does a great job at keeping kids out of the adult-only pool area, so it is a much more serene experience than being on the main pool deck with all the excited kids.

Younger Guests and Pools Aboard the Magic

Kids must be three and older and potty trained to be allowed in the pools on the Disney Magic. Kids in swim diapers are not permitted in the onboard pools. Kids in swim diapers can splash in the adorable Nephew’s Splash Zone. There is a second splash pad called Aquazone for kids over the age of three who are potty trained.

The AquaDunk

The AquaDunk is a body slide that shoots riders in a clear tube that extends over the side of the ship. The rider gets in position then the floor disappears from under them, making this a fast and thrilling ride. Guests must be 48” tall to ride the AquaDunk.

There is also a tamer slide, the Twist and Spout, located near the Aqualab. The Twist and Spout has a height requirement of 38” tall and all in all, this is a pretty tame slide.

Children under seven may ride with someone 14 or older but must be at least 42 inches tall. Single riders must be at least 54″ tall. Operating hours vary, and the lines will be long, especially on sea days. The best time to ride the AquaDuck on the Disney Magic  is on embarkation day, on sea days, and in the early evening when most families with kids are at dinner.

Entertainment and Live Shows on the Disney Magic

The onboard Walt Disney Theatre will have Disney-themed, Broadway-style entertainment on board. The current shows on the Disney Magic  are Tangled the Musical, Disney Dreams: An Enchanted Classic, and Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story.

The shows typically run about 50 minutes to give guests time to get to dinner and other activities.  Tangled the Musical is an abbreviated version of animated film and the show’s designers have done a fantastic job of telling the full story in the time allotted without making the guests feel cheated.

Dreams is a production exclusive to Disney Cruise Line about a little girl named Anne Marie who learns to believe in herself through several musical interactions with various Disney characters. Twice Charmed , also exclusive to Disney Cruise Line, begins at the wedding celebration of Cinderella. A new villain is introduced, taking Cinderella and her family back in time, altering the happily ever after story. If you’re a fan of Lady Tremaine and the two wicked stepsisters, this one is a don’t-miss.

On longer cruises, the entertainment may include illusionists or family-friendly comedy shows. If there’s a world premiere of a Disney movie while you’re on board, the Walt Disney Theater may hold a Hollywood-style opening night.

Shows are aligned with dinner seatings

There are two dinner seatings and two nightly shows. If you’re dining early, you’ll eat first and then go to the show. If you’re dining later, your designated show will be before dinner.

Movies on Board the Disney Magic

Watch Disney movies on board the Disney Magic  in the Buena Vista Theater. The Buena Vista will show first and second run Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars movies, so if there’s something from one of those franchises playing at the theater when you take your cruise, you’ll be able to watch it on board the Disney Magic , and it’s included in the cost of your cruise.

A schedule of movie times will are posted on the marquee outside the theater, and they’ll also be listed in the Disney Navigator App.

Funnel Vision

If you want to watch a Disney movie from the pool or while relaxing on the sun deck with a piece of pizza, there are nearly round-the-clock movies playing on a giant screen on Deck 9.

In Room Movies

If you prefer to cozy up in your room and watch Disney films, just turn on your TV.

Disney Character Meet and Greets

Whether you are a first time Disney cruiser  or whether it’s your tenth Disney Cruise, seeing your favorite Disney characters on board is always a fun treat.

There are almost endless opportunities to interact with your favorite Disney characters on a Disney cruise ship. Your Navigator app will tell you the character times and locations, so find out when your favorites will be available and line up early for that photo. Don’t forget your autograph book.

Surprise character sightings are constantly popping up. You might see Cinderella or Belle waving from the balcony overlooking the atrium or spot Pluto clowning around in the elevator, which seems to be a favorite spot. Or, you might get lucky and encounter a character as they’re moving from one spot to the next. I once happened upon Captain Hook traveling down a corridor on Deck 5. He kept moving and gave me a disdainful little wave.

Fun Character-Themed Outfits

If you’re into character greetings, you’ll be delighted to know that character attire on a Disney Cruise Line ship is unique. You’ll see characters in nautical outfits on board, in beachwear on Disney’s Castaway Cay, and pirate garb on pirate night.

If you do an Alaska cruise, you’ll see your favorite character in fur-trimmed parkas, and if you take a seasonal cruise, such as a Halloween or holiday cruise, you’ll see characters in costumes and Christmas sweaters. There’s nothing cuter than seeing Mickey Mouse dressed up like Dracula.

Where Does the Disney Magic Cruise Stack Up For Me?

I love the  Disney Magic , and it ranks number two out of the five ships I’ve sailed on so far. The Disney Wonder  is my favorite, and the Disney Magic  is a close second. I love the smaller ships, and I’ll be heartbroken if they retire these ships without replacing them with a more intimate-sized cruise ship.

The layout of the Magic and the Wonder are nearly identical, but the Wonder is slightly newer and, more recently, reimagined.

Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic

Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic is a touching story about a little girl named Anne Marie who can’t seem to find it in her heart to believe. The story begins one night as Anne Marie, almost asleep, is visited by several beloved Disney Characters. Each recounts a tale, complete with rousing renditions of treasured songs.

The show featuring fan favorites such as Mickey, Minnie, The Blue Fairy, Peter Pan and friends reveal the secret powers of the heroes residing within her own home—and heart. Journey with Anne Marie as she learns how to believe in herself. You’ll see the strength of positive thinking, and be reminded about the ways that an optimistic and encouraging attitude can have an effect on the whole world!

DCL Disney Dreams Enchanted Classic Lion King 4

The show originally debuted on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder in 2003. There are two variations of the show specific to each ship now that the Disney Wonder has Frozen The Musical. The Disney Magic’s version has a Frozen scene which was incorporated into the show in the summer of 2015 . The Disney Wonder features an extended Lion King scene as the primary difference along with a variation in the Beauty and the Beast scene.

Scott – not sure when this page was last updated and maybe this has been going on for a while. Just off the Wonder and the Lion King portion only consisted of Circle of Life. There was a Rapunzel section added to the show though. Looks like the show may now be the same on the Wonder and Magic with the Rapunzel/Frozen section swapped depending on the ship

The information on this page was last updated in September 2018 based on the most recent Walt Disney Theatre program available. I have not seen an updated copy of the booklet to update the shows.

Thanks Scott- I was looking for a new booklet while onboard and did not see one – could be because it is being updated…

Hard to say. I hope they continue to update the book as the shows are changed. From my experience, I have not been to the theatre when Cast Members are actively handing them out. I’ve always found them in boxes inside the doors.

Live Shows on the Disney Wish: A Full Review

Sharing is caring!

Grand Hall on the Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of activities , unlike what guests will find on any other cruise line. The Disney Wish, DCL’s newest ship , offers some fresh & unique offerings not found on the other four ships. Let’s review the live, Broadway-style, shows on the Disney Wish.

The Walt Disney Theatre

Entrance to the Walt Disney Theatre on the Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line features awarding winning stage productions across its entire fleet. The Disney Wish is no different, featuring three incredible shows inside the Walt Disney Theatre. Spanning three decks, this 1,274-seat theatre is inspired by scenes from Fantasia , with an enchanted forest theme. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including projection mapping and a Dolby Atmos 3D audio system, which is a first of its kind at sea! Just outside the theatre, on Deck 3, guests can purchase refreshments including popcorn, candy, soda, and alcoholic beverages, at Preludes.

Preludes bar on the Disney Wish

While the theatre is capable of hosting movie viewings and onboard acts like comedians and musicians, it will primarily be used to feature three stage shows: Disney Seas the Adventure , Disney The Little Mermaid , and Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular . The Walt Disney Theatre features an amazing cast of live performers. You’ll be in awe of the acting, singing, and dancing. Not to mention some amazing puppetry, lighting, and sound effects.

Each show is performed twice on its given evening. Once around 6pm for guest with Second Dining, and again around 8:30pm for guests with Main Dining. This allows all guests the opportunity to view the show before or after their assigned dining time. Guest can see shows times in the DCLNavigator app, or on boards right outside the theatre. While the theatre is big enough to hold everyone who wishes to view the shows, guests wanting to seat front and center should plan to arrive around 30 minutes early.

Disney Seas the Adventure

Disney Seas the Adventure Musical on Disney Cruise Line

During the first evening of your sailing, the Walt Disney Theatre welcomes you to enjoy Disney Seas the Adventure . This brand-new show debuted with the Disney Wish and should not be missed! Grab a seat and be prepared for a journey through some of your favorite Disney stories! While Captain Minnie is busy setting up a surprise for the ship’s guests, Goofy takes over the helm and steers the Wish into waters unknown!

Captain Minnie Mouse meets guests on the Disney Wish

Does Goofy have what it takes to keep the ship on the right course, or will he wander off? This show is filled with so many of the most beloved Disney songs and characters. Goofy travels down the Eastern Australian Current where Crush & Squirt demonstrate how to go with the flow. Elsa, Merida, & Moana show him that he can command his own journey by remaining brave. Tiana teaches him that hard work is what it takes to get to where he wants to go. And Hercules is there to remind him that he has the strength to take on any challenge. By the time confetti is raining down during the finale, you’ll be ready to dance and sing along.

Moana on the Disney Wish

Disney Seas the Adventure is the type of show that brings people back to Disney Cruise Line over and over. It is the perfect blend of amazing live performances, Disney storytelling, and nostalgia from your favorite Disney movies. Some of the other ‘jukebox’ musicals featured on the other ships can feel like a hodgepodge of random songs thrown together. This one though has a clear story with a powerful message, blended with amazing music.

Who should watch

Everyone! This is a show that everyone in your sailing party will love. Whether your sailing with your whole family, or enjoying an adults-only getaway – guests of all ages will enjoy the upbeat music and seeing their favorite characters. It is a perfect way to kick off your sailing. You could watch this show every time you sail on the Wish and it would never grow old!

Disney The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid musical on Disney Cruise Line

Another brand-new show for Disney Cruise Line is Disney The Little Mermaid . This modern-telling of a Disney classic opens on a group of travelling storytellers who have stumbled upon a treasure-chest. Full of human trinkets of course – whozits & whatzits included! The storytellers are so inspired by the chest’s belongings, they bring the story of The Little Mermaid to life. While the story has been modernized, guests will recognize all their favorite songs and characters from the original film.

New arrangements of beloved songs “Part of Your World”, “Under the Sea”, and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” are stand-outs. The set design and use of projection mapping transform the theatre into an enchanting underwater world.

While the show features some impressive puppetry and incredible vocal performances, it does fall a little flat in some areas. The story is so familiar that it can feel stale at times and some of the “reimagination” doesn’t seem to be fully conceived. The transition from storytellers to Little Mermaid characters and back is a little unclear and may leave younger guests confused. During one scene, Ursula is lifted up by a large robotic arm in an attempt to show her growing into a large monster. This is a call back to a similar scene in the movie. But it comes off as clunky, and well robotic. The show has a lot of promise and with a few minor tweaks, we think it could be a stand-out show for DCL.

Everyone who has never seen it before. Considering this show is new to the Wish, even the most seasoned DCL sailors have likely not seen The Little Mermaid in the Walt Disney Theatre.  It still has all the wonderful qualities Disney Cruise Line shows are known for – powerful signing, fantastic choreography, amazing sets, and Broadway-level production value. After seeing it you’ll can judge  if you’ll want to watch it again or not.

Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular

Set of Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular onboard the Disney WIsh

Looking to go on an adventure to a whole new world ? Well then Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular is just for you! Based on the 1992 animated film, the show opens at the entrance of the cave of wonders. Here we meet Jafar and Iago who are struggling to find a diamond-in-the-rough capable of retrieving the magic lamp. From there guests are taken on a familiar magic carpet ride through Agrabah.

Aladdin needs help from the Genie to get Jasmine to fall in love with him but to also defeat the Jafar. Even more so than The Little Mermaid , Aladdin feels very similar to the original, just in a condensed format. The show does feature an original song “To Be Free”. This a solo performed by Jasmine that was introduced in the Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater production of Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular.

Aladdin & Jasmine take a magic carpet ride on the ceiling of the Keg & Compass on the Disney Wish

Musical numbers are great but some of the design and special effects feel very outdated. During “One Jump”, Aladdin exits the stage only to come back from up high on a visible cable moving in slow-motion across the stage. This is meant to replicate his big jump from the movie, but it does not translate well to the stage. And while it’s more comedic than the other DCL shows, the Genie character feels forced and over-the-top.

While it is a decent show, we think it would be better reimagined based on the live action Aladdin starring Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott to give it a fresh spin. Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular is also featured on the Disney Fantasy, though minor updates were made before it debuted on the Wish. We also missed our favorite monkey – Abu – who is not featured in the show at all.

DCL First-timers & musical theatre lovers. If this is your first time sailing with Disney, and you want to get the full experience – you should make an effort to see all the performances in the. Likewise, if you are someone who appreciates musicals, particularly Disney ones, you’ll enjoy this re-telling. However, considering the shorter itineraries (3- & 4-nights) that the Wish is currently sailing, it may be hard for you to find the time to do everything. If you want to skip one of the shows – in order to participate in other activities – this is the one to miss.

Final Thoughts

Disney Cruise Line gathers some of the most talented performers from across the world. Their performances alone are worth the time to check out a show in the Walt Disney World Theatre. The shows presented on Disney ships are also so unique when compared to the rest of the cruise industry. The wonderful Disney story-teller and power-house music that the company is known and loved for is never more present than in the Walt Disney Theatre. Guests of all ages and cruising experience levels are sure to enjoy these magnificent productions. However, your time onboard is limited and you may have to make some sacrifices. We hope this review was helpful in guiding you towards setting your cruise entertainment priority!
