Special Tours Wildlife Adventures – Whale Watching and Other Sea Tours!

Special Tours was founded in 1996 as an operator for puffin watching tours for tourists, and for scientific trips for school children. The company has since steadily branched out by offering whale watching, sea angling, northern lights by boat, Reykjavík by sea and numerous incentive & group tours.

Whale Watching

Join Special Tours for an informative and exciting whale watching tour! Our boats are located very close to the city centre in Reykjavík‘s famous Old Harbour. The most commonly spotted whales in Faxaflói Bay are minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, humpback whales and harbour porpoises. An experienced guide will share their extensive knowledge and fun facts about the wildlife we encounter at sea. While searching for the whales, enjoy the beautiful scenery all around you on our way out and back.

Special Tours is proud to offer three types of whale watching tours!

CLASSIC Whale Watching (3-3.5 hours) – Hop on board Andrea, one of the largest whale watching boats in Iceland, with plenty of space to view the whales both inside and outside! This tour operates year-round, and we are happy to be able to offer German guiding during the summer season. There is a special educational and interactive focus on board, with whale bones, teeth and baleen plates for passengers to see and touch. A cafe, souvenir shop and restrooms are all on board. Free Wi-Fi and warm overalls are also provided for everyone!

EXPRESS Whale Watching (2-2.5 hours) – Offered from May – September, this express tour goes on a smaller and faster boat. It is perfect for those looking for a bit of adventure, or simply trying to fit in as much as possible during their vacation! In only 20-30 minutes you will have reached the feeding grounds, spending less time waiting. A snack bar and restrooms are on the boat, and free Wi-Fi and warm overalls are provided for everyone!

RIB EXPRESS Whale Watching (2 hours) – We have two powerful RIB boats that allows us to get extra close to the whales in a way that is safe for both the animals and our lovely passengers. Available from April 15 – October 31st, this exciting express tour is extra-fast and has built in shock absorbing seats to make it more comfortable. During the summer months we also visit the islands that the puffins nest on during our way out to the feeding grounds. We provide warm overalls, life jackets, gloves and goggles for all passengers!

Please note that these tours are weather dependant and sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed. If you are not able to see the whales on your tour you will get a complimentary ticket to try again on the next available day!

Puffin Express (1 hour) – During the summer Special Tours offers a quick 1 hour tour to see the famous puffins! The puffins are in Iceland for their nesting season (around May 1st – August 20th), and have breeding grounds on islands just off the coast of Reykjavík. In only 15 minutes you will be out watching these adorable little birds while getting amazing views of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains. Our boats can get you extra close to the islands! We provide binoculars on board and recomend a good camera lens for close-up pictures.

Puffin Express by RIB Speedboat (1 hour) – The Puffin Express by RIB Speedboat is the perfect option for an exciting, fast tour that presents the opportunity to get really close to the birds! The adventure starts at the Old Harbour of Reykjavík and only takes one hour.

Sea Angling (2.5-3 hours) – Enjoy a real fishing experience and a BBQ on board during this sea angling tour, available from May 1st – September 15th. This tour is great for all ages and levels of experience, as our expert crew is happy to assist anyone who is not familiar with fishing. All necessary fishing equipment and protective clothing is provided. The catch is grilled on board for an exceptionally delicious fresh taste straight from the ocean!

Northern Lights by Boat (2-3 hours) – Watching the northern lights from the ocean is an amazing experience you will not want to miss! Join us in search for the northern lights at sea, escaping the light pollution from the city. There is plenty of space on the outer viewing decks, and warm overalls are provided! There are also heated indoor seating areas, a special northern lights video and refreshments for sale. Your guide will explain the science behind the lights and share facts, stories and myths about the lights from cultures around the world. Please note that this tour is weather dependant and sightings of naturally occurring phenemona cannot be guaranteed. If you are not able to see the lights on your tour you will get a complimentary ticket to try again on the next available day!

Northern Lights by Boat with a Backup Plan (NON-REFUNDABLE)

This Northern Lights by Boat with a Backup Plan tour is a great choice for people who want a guaranteed adventure, even if the weather does not agree with us! If the Northern Lights tour is confirmed to sail, you will join the regularly scheduled tour. If the Northern Lights tour is not able to sail due to weather or cloud coverage you are automatically placed on another tour that has been set up in partnership with the Whales of Iceland museum. Simply amazing.

Man, where to even begin. These two tours were nothing short of remarkable. Beautiful sights, wonderful tour guides and an overall great experience. Horse riding was fun, and the two girls who lead us were awesome. They even let us go a bit faster, which is always a great thing. As for the whale watching, Iga, the tour guide, was by far the most amazing person I've ever seen in my life. It felt like I was travelling with a movie like hero during the entire trip. She was so wonderful and informative, that at times I wasn't sure if I should be taking photos and videos of her, rather than the whales. She even had us join us for a good song so that we put on a good show for the whales. Highly recommended, and for the whale tours, absolutely look for Iga.

Thank you so much for your review! We're glad that you enjoyed both the horse riding with our partners, and our whale watching tour. We will pass the kind words along to IGA :) Thank you for sailing with Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland. Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

We got lucky and were able to go out on the only night available during our stay. You will want to check ahead of time to be sure the tour hasn't been canceled because of weather or cloudy skies. Our guides were very helpful in giving camera tips for capturing the lights if they appeared, as well as informing people to not use flash and to dim their cellphone screens. Nothing like missing the lights b/c of someone's bright flash in your face! Iga was the main guide and she was a delight. She was funny and informative. She was also determined that we were going to see the lights! We were out quite awhile and she kept checking. Sure enough, pretty soon a star here and there appeared, and finally, the clouds opened up and there was the Aurora! I would definitely go with this group again!

We had originally booked Northern lights boat trip on 28th October, that get cancelled because of weather condition. Which fair enough the problem we have no one has contacted us to inform us about cancelled. We just found that out by mistake when we went on websites. Otherwise, we were happy with everything, friendly ladies in a shop, friendly staff on a boat.

Thank you for your review! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with us on the Northern Lights by Boat tour and we will pass the kind words along to the crew. We try to contact guests as soon as we have made a decision about sailing and if we have received guests' personal contact details. Apologies, if we did not reach you on time. Thank you for sailing with Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland. Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

We had a fantastic tour guide Simon, we were very lucky to see the lights, he took us to a very lovely location and even tho it was late, he kept everyone engaged and involved. A fantastic tour , amazing breathtaking lights. Worth every moment.

Thank you for your review! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with us and were able to see the Northern Lights during your tour and we will pass the kind words along to the crew. Thank you for sailing with Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland. Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

After waiting for several days to see the Northern Lights, finally they arrived on our last night in Iceland. Our tour guide, Iga, was fabulous. She explained the phenomenon and gave us specific direction throughout the tour so we could locate the lights. She gave photo tips as well. I highly recommend this tour and this guide.

Thank you for your review! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with us and were able to see the Northern Lights during your tour on the last day of your stay! We will pass on the kind words to Iga! Thank you for sailing with Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland. Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

Thank you for your review! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with us and were able to see the Northern Lights during your tour on the last day of your stay and we will pass the kind words along to the guide, IGA. The Best Iceland Tours

With terrain shaped by volcanic eruptions and shifting tectonic plates and the surrounding waters filled with glaciers, icebergs and whales, Iceland is like no other place on Earth. It's also an ideal spot to observe a seasonal phenomenon above the Earth: the northern lights  (or aurora borealis).

The following Iceland tours, determined by U.S. News to be the best available thanks to expert input and traveler sentiment, provide ideal ways of experiencing all that this extraordinary place has to offer. All of these excursions are conducted by knowledgeable guides eager to share their insights into their country's special features.

Ice Lagoon Adventure Tours – Zodiac Boat Tour

Explore the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon – part of Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Europe's largest glacier – aboard an inflatable rigid boat on this expedition. In addition to icebergs and the glacial wall, you might also spot wildlife like seals and various bird species. Tourgoers consistently describe the guides as passionate and knowledgeable, and say photo opportunities abound. Trips are available from May through October several times a day, with departures in both the morning and the afternoon. The park containing the lagoon sits in the southeast part of the country, about 236 miles from Reykjavik . Ice Lagoon Adventure Tours also runs private excursions.

NiceTravel – Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon & Kerid Volcano

Price: Adults from $218; kids from $123 Duration: 11 hours

Visit the Golden Circle's top sights, including Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss, plus a volcanic crater and a pristine lagoon on this daylong journey. The park is of both geological and historical significance as it straddles a fault line between two tectonic plates and was the site of a Viking parliament that ruled for hundreds of years starting in A.D. 930. Other highlights include Geysir, a hot spring that shoots plumes of vapor into the air; Gullfoss (aka the Golden Waterfall) over which water cascades down more than 100 feet into a narrow canyon; Kerid, a colorful red-earth volcanic crater; and a two-hour stop at the heated waters of the popular Blue Lagoon. Tour-takers invariably find the scenery spectacular and the guides friendly and informative, though a few found the bus to be too small for the number of people on the tour. Tours happen daily all year long. Pickup from various locations in Reykjavik occurs between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and minibuses return to the city around 8 p.m.

Reykjavik Sailors – Whale Watching

Price: Adults from 11,990 króna (about $87); kids from 5,995 króna (about $44) Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours

Reykjavik Sailors, located on Reykjavik's Old Harbour, offers whale watching boat trips throughout the year. Tourgoers report spotting ample wildlife, and appreciate the knowledgeable, friendly guides.

Transportation from area hotels is available for an additional fee. Snacks and beverages are available aboard the boat, which features outdoor viewing platforms as well as heated indoor space. Reykjavik Sailors also operates tours of the northern lights, among other options.

Arctic Adventures – Crystal Ice Cave Tour Iceland

Price: Adults from about $161; kids from around $137 Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Tourgoers frequently praise the capable and personable guides. Many reviewers called this the highlight of their trip to Iceland.

Trips depart from the lagoon daily from October to mid-April beginning at 9:20 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. While the hike to the cave is rated as easy, children younger than 6 are not allowed on this trip. All of the necessary safety equipment is included in the cost of the tour. Arctic Adventures conducts a variety of ice cave tours, glacier hikes and more.

Part of Thingvellir National Park, Silfra fissure is the result of the two tectonic plates separating at a rate of about 2 centimeters per year. The fissure is filled with water from Langjökull glacier that's been filtered through lava fields, making it incredibly pure. Northern Lights Tours

About Northern Lights Day Tours in Iceland

Hunting down the auroras alone can be a bit tricky , and winter driving conditions can be hazardous, especially for people who aren’t used to driving in the snow, fog, or slippery roads. It can save valuable time to book a tour with one of our professional guides. They know the perfect spots that are optimal for viewing the Northern Lights, which can change on any given day.

special tours iceland

With more than 20 Northern Lights tours on offer, how do you find the perfect one to suit your trip? Well, that depends on what you’re expecting from your time in Iceland.

If you’re in Reykjavík for just a night or two, a day trip is the ideal bite-sized package for your layover or weekend. The Magical Auroras Northern Lights tour is our all-time bestselling day tour! Head out in either a minibus or upgrade to a Super Jeep on the Northern Lights Explorer . And with a few hours left over, there’s still plenty of time to squeeze in the stunning Blue Lagoon before your day tour! If you’re staying in the capital, a Northern Lights boat tour from the harbor offers you the chance to see the lights from the water.

If you’re in Iceland for an extended period of time, why not try a multi-day tour that includes a hunt for the elusive Northern Lights? Check out the first-timer’s package, our 3-day South Coast tour, which includes the Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and a visit to an ice cave.

special tours iceland

If you are seeking adventure in Iceland and your goal is to enjoy the Northern Lights show every day, check out our special tour tailored for the aurora explorer in you. Our 8-day Northern Lights tour with Golden Circle, Mývatn, hot springs, waterfalls, a glacier hike, and more, rewards explorers with unforgettable views of the Northern Lights.

WHY IS ICELAND THE PERFECT PLACE TO GO ON A NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR?

Due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Iceland is the perfect destination to see the auroras. As Iceland is not densely populated, there is little light pollution. Even so, our tours always venture out from the cities to the countryside for optimal viewing. As the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavík is ideal as a base for international travelers hoping to glimpse the lights.

Northern Lights dancing in the Winter Sky | South West, Iceland.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BOOK A TOUR?

The best time of the year to see the Northern Lights in Iceland is from September to April, due to lower light pollution and frequency. In December and January, the nights are the longest, with only around four to five hours of sunlight. So the chance of seeing the light show increases exponentially during this season.

Check our winter tours to ensure you don't miss any natural wonders!

Important factors for ideal aurora viewing include recent solar activity, cloud density, and darkness. It’s always best to check the aurora forecast a few hours beforehand to know where the auroras will appear, how intense they will be, and where there are fewer clouds. However, just like the weather forecast, this can be a bit inaccurate at times.

FAQs ABOUT OUR NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS IN ICELAND

Will i definitely see the lights on the tour.

The Northern Lights are natural phenomena and we unfortunately cannot promise you will see them on our tours. Your chances of seeing them depend on a number of factors that are out of our control, including weather conditions and atmospheric factors.

WHAT ARE THE BEST CAMERA SETTINGS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING THE AURORA BOREALIS ON MY TOUR?

Man Photographs Aurora During Winter in Iceland

Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer to this question as it takes patience, effort, and often, trial and error to photograph the auroras . You should be prepared to experiment with various settings on your camera and, due to the cold weather, you may need to bring additional accessories such as extra batteries. A tripod may also be helpful.

WHAT IF MY NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR GOES AHEAD AND THE AURORA ISN’T SEEN?

A refund is not available if the Northern Lights tour goes ahead and none are seen, however, we do offer you the chance to join a Northern Lights minibus tour free of charge.

Please contact our Customer Care Team to re-book your tour.

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS IF MY TOUR IS CANCELED?

When Northern Lights tours are canceled it’s usually due to unfavorable weather conditions.

In that case, your options will be to:

  • Reschedule for another day.
  • Find another tour to embark on and use the deposit for it.
  • Get fully refunded.

Please contact our Customer Care team to re-book your tour.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR IS ON FOR THE EVENING?

The Northern Lights are a pretty difficult thing to predict. You can check the Icelandic Meteorological Office website to see the forecast - if the level is high and the skies are clear then it’s very likely that the tour is going ahead. By 17:00 at the latest, we will update our website’s tour departure information, and if your tour is canceled for any reason, you’ll receive an email notifying you of the details.

If we think there is no chance at all of seeing the lights, we will cancel the tour. We don’t want to bring you out and disappoint you if there will definitely be no aurora activity.

WILL MY GUIDE TAKE PICTURES FOR ME?

Happy Couple Watching Auroras in Iceland

Yes, the guide will take a photo of you with the Northern Lights behind you. These can be single or group photos and are free of charge.

WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The Northern Lights season is said to be from late August until mid-April. However, if you want to increase your chances of seeing them, it is best to wait until the colder winter months, from mid-September until March.

CAN YOU SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN REYKJAVIK?

If luck and weather are on your side, then you will be able to see the Aurora Borealis above the inviting streets of Reykjavík. Whether you see the lights or not depends on two unique factors. The first is the weather: If the sky is clear, with no clouds, then you are halfway to seeing the astonishing spectacle that is the Northern Lights (although light pollution can sometimes be a problem).

Increased solar activity is the second factor, so if these two are both favorable at the same time you may well be able to see the Northern Lights from Reykjavík.

I AM TRYING TO BOOK A TOUR BUT MY CREDIT CARD PAYMENT FAILS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The first step is to make sure your credit card provider allows you to make payments in Canadian Dollars (CAD) or American Dollars (USD) if you have selected these currencies.

In some cases, your credit card company would need to pre-authorize the transaction for you before you can process the transaction online.

If you are still having problems booking through the Arctic Adventures website (www.adventures.is) then please contact our Customer Care Team .

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN HUNTING FOR THE AURORA?

Since it’ll be nighttime and winter when you chase the Northern Lights, it’s important to dress warmly! Be sure to dress in comfortable layers. Take an undershirt, a fleece sweater, and a jacket to go over everything. Don’t forget thermal underwear or leggings too!

HOW MUCH DOES THE NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR COST?

The cost will really depend on the tour. Our basic Northern Lights tour in a minivan starts from 9.990 ISK. Upgrade to a Super Jeep for just 18.990 ISK more! Combo tours and multi-day tours are also priced at the best value possible.
