Short on time? Our pick for the best inflatable kayak is the  Aquaglide Navarro 130 .

Our roundup of the best lightweight kayaks so you can hit the water with ease.

Ok, full disclosure: even though I lift weights regularly and think of myself as a fit person, I am super weak when it comes to lifting heavy things. Like, embarrassingly so.

I can’t count the times I thought something was “broken” only to have a capable person push a little harder and magically get it to work.

So when it came to finding the best lightweight kayaks on the market, I was all over it. I love spending time outside and I like to carry my own weight, both literally and figuratively.

With a traditionally heavy and bulky item like a kayak, a lightweight, manageable model is a game-changer. We have two lightweight kayaks at home–both are inflatable–and we use them all the time.

Below, I’ve brought you the best lightweight kayaks for every type of recreational pursuit. Let’s dive in!

#1 Advanced Elements Lagoon 1

Best One-Person Lightweight Kayak

Advanced Elements Lagoon 1 - Best One-Person Lightweight Kayak

Our rating: 4.6/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 23 lbs Length: 8’ 4’’ Weight capacity: 250 lbs

Advanced Elements is a highly popular kayak brand , so I can’t help but include their lightweight kayaks on my list.

The Advanced Elements Lagoon 1 is a sit-inside inflatable kayak for solo paddlers.

Rigid aluminum ribs reinforce the lightweight construction on the Lagoon 1 in the bow and stern, giving it similar tracking to hard shell kayaks.

This kayak is reasonably-priced, especially for the quality of its materials. And at just 23 pounds, this is one of the best lightweight kayaks for solo paddlers.

With that said, the Advanced Elements Lagoon 1 is relatively short at 8’4’’.

Short kayaks make excellent whitewater kayaks because turning swiftly is paramount in those environments. However, this kayak has no whitewater rating, so I recommend you keep it on flat water.

One other thing to note–short kayaks can be trickier for long-distance trips because they tend to zig-zag in the water as you paddle.

The skeg on this kayak also isn’t removable, which I don’t love. But with such a short boat, you might want to keep the skeg on permanently anyway to help with tracking.

Additionally, this kayak has a padded foam seat and reinforced carrying handles on the bow and stern.

Although I’m generally impressed with Advanced Elements’ products, they notoriously don’t come with paddles or air pumps (*le sigh*).

Looking for more inflatable options? Read our guide to the best inflatable kayaks .

  • Good bang for your buck
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable seat
  • Paddles and air pump sold separately
  • Sit-inside design is slightly tricky for newbies

#2 Driftsun Almanor Inflatable Touring Kayak

Best Two-Person Lightweight Kayak

Best Two-Person Lightweight Kayak - Driftsun Almanor Inflatable Touring Kayak

Our rating: 4.9/5 Solo or tandem: Tandem Weight: 36 lbs Length: 13’ Weight capacity: 400 lbs

Most hard shell two-person kayaks on the market will run upwards of 70+ lbs, but the Driftsun Almanor Inflatable Touring Kayak is just 36 lbs. This makes it one of the lightest kayaks for two people that I’ve found.

In addition to this kayak’s low weight, there’s a lot to like about it. Driftsun markets this kayak as a hybrid between a recreational and a touring kayak, and it shares some features with each.

It’s a long boat (13’), which helps it glide efficiently over long distances, but it’s also quite broad (39’’), making it stable like a recreational kayak.

Many use touring kayaks as sea kayaks, and it’s essential to have a comfortable kayak on a long ocean journey.

The Driftsun Almanor Inflatable Touring Kayak has super comfortable EVA foam-padded high-back seats. It also has adjustable foot braces for comfort and packs into a backpack-style carrier.

With that said, this lightweight tandem kayak has a max weight capacity of just 400 lbs, which is a little on the low side for two people plus a day’s worth of gear.

Looking for more two-person options? Read our guide to the best tandem kayaks .

  • Adjustable padded seat
  • Great for longer trips
  • Fast setup time
  • Low maximum weight capacity

#3 Outdoor Tuff Stinger 3

Best Lightweight Kayak for Seniors

Best Lightweight Kayak for Seniors - Outdoor Tuff Stinger 3

Our rating: 4.8/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 25 lbs Length: 9’1’’ Weight capacity: 275 lbs

If I had to pick a kayak for my grandma, I would want something lightweight with an adjustable seat that packs into a backpack and uses a foot pump to inflate.

Voila! The Outdoor Tuff Stinger 3 is the best lightweight kayak for seniors because it has all of these features.

This lightweight inflatable kayak weighs just 25 pounds but is still durable with a triple layer of PVC tarpaulin.

It has multiple air chambers (per industry standard) and comes with a foot pump, so you won’t have to bend your back up and down as you do with a regular hand pump.

The seat also has a high level of adjustability and there’s a footrest for added comfort.

The whole contraption folds into a backpack, which is super helpful because a bulky duffel bag is no good for grandmas.

The Outdoor Tuff Stinger also comes with a paddle, so there’s no need to fuss with extra costs.

One issue I have with this kayak is that the maximum weight capacity may not be as high as advertised.

I’ve come across at least one person who said that when they opened the box, the side of the boat read its capacity was 165 lbs, not 275 lbs. This makes a big difference in who can safely use this inflatable kayak.

  • Folds into a backpack
  • Foot pump for ergonomic inflation
  • Adjustable seat
  • Multiple air chambers
  • It may not fit big people well

#4 Lifetime Lotus 8’

Best Short Lightweight Kayak

Lifetime Lotus 8 - Best Short Lightweight Kayak

Our rating: 4.6/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 36.5 lbs Length: 8’’ Weight capacity: 250 lbs

If you’re looking for short and straightforward lightweight kayaks, look no further than the Lifetime Lotus 8’ .

This sit-on-top lightweight boat provides an easy, affordable way to get on the water and the shorter length is great for those with small vehicles.

High-density polyethylene comprises this hardshell kayak, a standard material for cheap but sturdy recreational kayaks.

There are also built-in, molded footrests in the kayak’s body, and a storage hatch at the back provides ample storage space. Handles on both the bow and stern make moving this guy easy.

While the padded seat cushion offers *some* comfort for shorter paddlers, the seat situation is nothing to write home about. The bottom of the seat isn’t padded and the adjustable backrest is a bit thin.

Being such a short kayak, you may also find it challenging to keep this boat in a straight line. Despite this, you can work around it by adjusting the depth of your paddle.

And on the plus side, this wide kayak is very stable.

  • It fits inside many SUVs
  • Handles on bow and stern
  • Reasonable price
  • Stable hull design
  • The padded seat needs an extra cushion
  • Tracking isn’t great

#5 Perception High Five

Best Small Lightweight Kayak

Perception High Five - Best Small Lightweight Kayak

Our rating: 4.8/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 21 lbs Length: 6’ Weight capacity: 120 lbs

The Perception High Five is the best small kayak because the design keeps kids in mind.

At just six feet long, this kayak weighs 21 pounds and is a sit-on-top kayak. The Perception High Five has numerous features that make it one of the best kayaks for kids .

First, the back of the kayak has a swim-up deck with hand holds for kids to gain a purchase. Because, let’s be honest, most kids *are* going overboard during a paddle sesh anyway.

You can paddle this high-density polyethylene kayak either standing or sitting. And there’s a leash and a tether system that hooks the kayak to an adult kayak.

While there are molded footrests, that’s about it in terms of comfort. No inflatable seats and no storage hatch, but hey–those things aren’t priorities to kids anyway.

  • Perfect for kids
  • Made of durable high-density polyethylene
  • Swim-up deck with handholds for safety
  • Tether and leash system
  • Seating may be uncomfortable for long periods

#6 Advanced Elements Packlite

Most Lightweight Kayak

Most Lightweight Kayak - Advanced Elements Packlite

Our rating: 4.8/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 4 lbs Length: 7’10’’ Weight capacity: 250 lbs

If you’re looking for the absolute lightest lightweight kayaks, check out the “pack rafts” category. Most lightweight kayaks will be between 20-35 lbs, but pack rafts are in a category of their own.

Pack rafts are simple, super-light kayaks (usually between four to seven pounds) designed to haul in a backpack.

The Advanced Elements Packlite raft is simply the best lightweight kayak for any adventure where mobility is critical. This inflatable kayak weighs four pounds and packs down to the size of a Happy Meal box.

Now, as with anything that is uber light, it’s also uber light on fancy features. This versatile kayak does have an inflatable seat cushion, but that’s about it. Back support will depend on your muscles.

A mesh satchel on the front provides a bit of cargo space, but you’ll need to keep an eye on the weight you put in the Packlite because it can only hold 250 pounds.

Finally, this lightweight kayak doesn’t come with paddles or a pump.

  • Incredibly lightweight
  • Good stability
  • Reasonably priced
  • Not big enough for big people
  • Paddle and pump not included

#7 Intex Challenger

Best Lightweight Kayak for Beginners

Intex Challenger - Best Lightweight Kayak for Beginners

Our rating: 4.5/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 28.4 lbs Length: 9’ Weight capacity: 220

I almost always bring up the Intex Challenger when I review kayaks because it’s a simple, inexpensive, and easy-to-use kayak.

I have the tandem version of it, and while you shouldn’t expect miracles from this kayak, it’s fantastic for flatwater recreational paddling without hurting your pocketbook.

This lightweight kayak weighs just over 28 pounds and comes with a carrying bag, a repair kit, air pump, paddle, and a detachable skeg.

There’s also bungee deck lacing on the boat’s bow, which should provide ample storage space for dry bags .

While there’s an adjustable backrest and an inflatable seat, it may not be sufficient for very tall paddlers.

Note that this sit-in kayak has a maximum weight capacity of 220 lbs. It’s the perfect lightweight kayak for beginners, teens, or petite figures, but it may not be suitable for bigger humans.

Lastly, the setup time on this kayak is fast–under 15 minutes. Just note that the Intex Challenger doesn’t have grab lines on the ends, but it’s such a lightweight vessel you’ll hardly need them.

  • Removable skeg
  • Includes paddles and an air pump
  • Flimsy carry bag
  • Not designed for rough water
  • Not suitable for big paddlers

#8 Sevylor Quikpak K1

Best Lightweight Sit-on-Top Kayak

Best Lightweight Sit-on-Top Kayak - Sevylor Quikpak K1

Our rating: 4.7/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 20.28 lbs Length: 8’7’’ Weight capacity: 400 lbs

Ok, so I debated on this one. The most lightweight kayaks are often inflatable kayaks, but inflatable kayaks *can* sit pretty high in the water, which makes them unstable.

Ultimately, I chose to let the kayak’s weight be the most crucial factor, and I’m going with the Sevylor Quikpack K1 for the best lightweight sit-on-top kayak.

At just over 20 pounds, this is one of the best lightweight kayaks for adults (that isn’t a pack raft).

This inflatable kayak includes all the basics: repair kit, paddle, air pump, plus the storage back is a backpack, so kudos for that. The Sevylor Quikpak also happens to be a budget-friendly kayak.

This simple, low-frills kayak does have molded footrests and an adjustable padded seat, but it may not be comfortable for tall folks.

Lastly, since you’ll be sitting a little high in the water on this kayak, it’s best to keep it on still water.

Looking for more budget-friendly options? Read our guide to the best budget kayaks .

  • Folds up into a backpack
  • Air pump and paddle included
  • Budget-friendly
  • The backrest is not tall enough for tall people
  • Balance may be a slight challenge

#9 Driftsun Voyager

Best Lightweight Kayak for Dogs

Driftsun Voyager - Best Lightweight Kayak for Dogs

Our rating: 4.5/5 Solo or tandem: Tandem Weight: 27 lbs Length: 11’ Weight capacity: 400 lbs

For those who can’t leave their fur baby, a durable, lightweight kayak is in order: behold, the Driftsun Voyager .

This sit-on-top model is one of the best lightweight kayaks for you and your dog because it boasts multiple layers of heavy-duty PVC plastic plus a layer of 840-denier oxford fabric.

In other words, it’s puncture-resistant from both rocks and dog paws.

This model has foam seats–again, perfect for scratchy dog claws. And because it’s a sit-on-top model, your doggo can move about or even lie down if they want.

The packed size of the Driftsun Voyager is equal to a duffel bag, which leaves plenty of room in your car for a dog crate or other dog accessories.

This kayak has paddles, an air pump, and a removable skeg. Plus, at just 27 pounds, you should have no problem maneuvering this kayak on your own.

On the downside, I have seen a few complaints about the quality of the stitching on this kayak.

  • Durable material resistant to punctures
  • You can’t puncture the foam seats
  • Paddles, air pump, and removable skeg included
  • Low-quality stitching

#10 BKC FK184 9’

Best Lightweight Kayak for Fishing

Best Lightweight Kayak for Fishing - BKC FK184

Our rating: 4.5/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 44 lbs Length: 9’ Weight capacity: 220

I recommend looking for these features in a fishing kayak: a wide, stable design, enclosed storage wells, a paddle holder, a cooler platform, and fishing rod holders (obviously).

Lightweight fishing kayaks can be hard to find. Traditional fishing kayaks are notoriously heavy, so the BKC FK184 is a revelation.

Fishermen often already have a lot of gear to haul, so why not find the lightest kayak model available?

At 44 pounds, the BKC FK184 isn’t the lightest boat on my list, but it’s the most lightweight fishing kayak I could find and still 30 pounds lighter than most hard-shell kayaks. Plus, it includes all the essential features a fisherman needs.

First, the design of this fishing kayak has a flat hull (bottom), making it stable enough to stand on while casting. A broad, stable hull is also very helpful when fighting a fish.

The enclosed storage wells are also convenient against splashing fish because they keep your gear perfectly dry.  Alternatively, you could use the wells to hold your fish.

You’ll need both hands while fishing, so having a place to put your paddle is vital. Straps on both sides of the kayak hold your paddle while you wrestle the big one.

Having a cooler is also nice when fishing. Not only do you often want cold drinks as a fisherman, but you could also use it to put fish on ice if you’re planning to eat your catch.

Finally–and this one is a no-brainer–a fishing kayak needs rod holders. The BKC FK184 has one articulating rod holder and four flush mount rod holders.

The BKC FK184 is a fantastic and well-loved kayak, with only a few minor issues such as a lengthy shipping time and subjectively uncomfortable seats.

  • Wide, stable design
  • Two waterproof hatches
  • Cooler platform
  • Five fishing rod holders
  • Slow shipping time
  • The seat is uncomfortable for some

#11 Aquaglide Navarro 130

Best Lightweight Touring Kayak

Aquaglide Navarro 130 - Best Lightweight Touring Kayak

Our rating: 4.9/5 Solo or tandem: Solo Weight: 35 lbs Length: 13’3’’ Weight capacity: 300

Traditional touring kayaks are typically quite long and thus tend to be heavy, but the Aquaglide Navarro 130 is just 35 pounds. This makes it one of the lightest sea kayaks for long-distance paddling!

The Aquaglide Navarro is a 13’3’’ long sit-inside kayak with a weight capacity of 300 pounds (more than enough for solo paddling plus gear).

And this lightweight kayak comes equipped with lots of storage space. There’s a storage hatch on the back plus mesh lacing on the front.

A rigid, drop-stitch floor and a tracking fin keep the Navarro 130 tracking in a straight line. Plus, the seat and footrest are highly adjustable, both of which are important on a long paddle.

The Aquaglide Navarro 130 has an additional deck cover splash guard , but it’s sold separately, as is their air pump and paddle.

  • Great for long-distance paddles
  • Lots of storage space
  • Drop stitch floor
  • Good tracking
  • Accessories (pump, paddle, spray skirt) sold separately

Lightweight Kayak Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best one for you

What to Look for in Lightweight Kayaks

I could write a whole post on kayak building materials, but I’ll try to keep it brief.

Wooden kayaks are hard to find and usually homemade by DIYers. Wood is lighter than fiberglass but as strong as carbon fiber.

These kayaks can have a beautiful aesthetic, but they’re often expensive.

Polyethylene

You may see this material called “rotomolded polyethylene” or “high-density polyethylene.” Polyethylene is an extremely common and durable plastic ubiquitous on lower-end kayaks.

It’s not the lightest material, but don’t get snooty about it–polyethylene is highly durable and can handle many years of wear and tear with minimal upkeep.

Thermoform kayaks

Thermoformed kayaks use thin sheets of plastic that are heated and pressed against a kayak mold.

These types of kayaks are lighter than polyethylene kayaks and a little more expensive, but they also have a shinier finish.

Composite Materials

Composites use resin to coat another durable, thin material. Here are a few examples:

  • Lightweight fiberglass kayaks are classic kayaks. They’re strong and cost-effective.
  • Carbon fiber is the lightest and most expensive kayak material, common on competition kayaks. But you can find recreational kayaks made of carbon fiber as well.
  • Kevlar , or Aramid fiber, is as strong as fiberglass but more lightweight–and often more expensive. A good, lightweight kevlar kayak will set you back a lot of $$$.

Inflatable kayaks

Inflatable kayaks use a different material than hard-shell kayaks. A few common materials include:

  • PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is the most common material for inflatable kayaks. It’s cheap, lightweight, and can layer with other materials for more durability. Note that PVC degrades in UV light and is also environmentally yucky.
  • Polyurethane is durable and lightweight, has the added benefit of being UV-resistant, and is way more environmentally friendly than PVC.
  • Nitrylonl is a combination of nitrile rubber and a very durable polyester fabric. It holds up better than PVC and is highly durable.

Other Factors to Look For in Lightweight Kayaks

other factors to look for in lightweight kayaks

Intended use

What types of water bodies are you looking to explore in your kayak? If inland lakes and calm rivers are your jam, you’ll do fine with a recreational kayak.

If whitewater is more up your alley, look for a kayak specifically designed with a spray skirt and rated for Class III whitewater or higher.

If ocean-going is your speed, you may want to explore touring kayaks.

Wider kayaks tend to be more stable and thus more beginner-friendly, while narrow boats can feel more “tippy” and are more popular among experienced paddlers .

Tracking refers to the ability of the kayak to stay in a straight line. Longer boats have better tracking than shorter boats.

Fins (skegs) on the bottom of the boat also make a considerable difference in tracking ability.

Drop Stitch Floor

You’ll only see this feature with inflatable kayaks. You can inflate a drop-stitched floor to be entirely rigid, which improves tracking and is helpful on fishing kayaks.

Storage Space

Make sure your boat has the storage space you need, whether it’s bungee cargo lacing, a separate compartment, D-rings, or a platform to latch a cooler onto.

NMMA Certification

The National Marine Manufacturers Association certifies watercraft in the USA as having met specific safety standards.

To achieve this certification, kayak manufacturers must have their products inspected yearly. It’s a nice bonus that’s good to look for in a kayak.

Types of Lightweight Kayaks

Solo vs tandem.

The difference between solo and tandem should be pretty self-explanatory. Solo kayaks are for one person, and tandem kayaks are for two. There are also a few kayaks out there with three seats.

Sit-on-top kayaks have an open platform design. This design can be suitable for beginners because you don’t have to learn any fancy bailing moves as you need to with a sit-inside kayak.

Sit-inside kayaks have an enclosed cockpit that only leaves your torso exposed. This design is excellent for cold water because it protects you from wind and water splashes.

Touring vs Recreational

Touring kayaks are typically longer with v-shaped bottoms designed to cross long distances efficiently.

Recreational kayaks have flat bottoms, which make them more stable and are more common for beginners or those on calm water.

Hardshell vs Inflatable

Hardshell kayaks are traditional kayaks. Inflatable kayaks are an emerging (awesome) product trend that packs into a duffel bag and inflates in a few minutes.

There’s nothing wrong with hardshell kayaks; many people find that they are faster and have better tracking than kayaks that inflate.

Inflatable kayaks are ideal for those without the storage space for a traditional kayak.

Foldable Kayaks

Folding kayaks are another category of lightweight kayaks that you should be aware of.

They’re a bit like a giant paper airplane, and while they’re certainly not the biggest category of lightweight kayak, you may see them out there.

I personally have never seen a folding kayak on the water, but if you end up buying a foldable kayak, you should write to us and let us know how you like it!

FAQs About Lightweight Kayaks

faqs about lightweight kayaks

What is the smallest and lightest-weight kayak available for adults?

The smallest and most lightweight kayaks for adults are pack rafts. A pack raft is an ultralight kayak (usually under ten pounds) that you haul to the backcountry in a backpack.

For example, the Advanced Elements Packlite is a four-pound kayak that packs down to the size of a purse.

What is the lightest touring kayak?

The lightest touring kayak on our list is the Aquaglide Navarro 130 . At just 35 pounds, this kayak is much easier to transport than traditional touring kayaks.

Is it better to have a short or long kayak?

Long, narrow kayaks are generally easier to keep in a straight line. They can carry more weight and are faster than shorter, wider kayaks, although also less stable.

Beginners often feel more comfortable on short kayaks because they’re more stable.

How much does an average kayak weigh? What is considered a light kayak?

Traditional hard shell solo kayaks weigh an average of 35-40 pounds, whereas two-person kayaks weigh an average of 70 pounds. A light kayak is anything under 40 pounds.

Who makes the lightest kayak paddle?

The top three lightest kayak paddles are the following:

  • Wilderness Systems Pungo Kayak Paddle
  • Aqua Bound Eagle Ray Carbon Kayak Paddle
  • Werner Camano Fiberglass Bent Shaft Kayak Paddle

What size kayak do I need for my height and weight?

The most important thing to remember when choosing a kayak is not to exceed the maximum weight rating for your kayak. Remember that your gear should also factor into your total weight calculation.

That said, your kayak will perform at its peak if you plan to have a 100-130 pound buffer between you and your gear and the max weight capacity.

If you load your kayak down to the absolute limit, you’ll be sitting low in the water, making it harder to paddle and easier to take on water.

Conclusion: Our Pick for the Best Lightweight Kayak

conclusion our pick for the best lightweight kayak

I have had so much fun with my lightweight kayaks over the years and can guarantee that the ease of moving and loading them contributed to the fun factor.

By contrast, the one time we borrowed some friends’ traditional heavy kayaks and strapped them to our roof, we were super stressed driving them down the highway.

Finding the right lightweight kayak can significantly affect how often you’re willing to take your kayak out.

After doing a ton of research to find the best lightweight kayaks on the market, I’ve chosen the Aquaglide Navarro 130 as the best lightweight kayak.

The Aquaglide Navarro 130 offers high-quality construction and design, and I like that you can use it in various water settings.

This kayak also has plenty of space, including the rear waterproof hatch and the bungee mesh on the front.

Although some of the accessories come separately, I like that it includes a spray skirt, which you can attach for added warmth.

What is Kayak? How does it work?

Is kayak reliable, ways to get a good deal on kayak, the bottom line.

When it comes to booking travel, it sometimes feels like there are an unlimited number of online travel agencies to choose from — and Kayak is one of them. But is Kayak legit? Can it actually help you get a good deal when booking travel? We did some digging to find out.

Kayak bills itself as the world’s leading travel search engine. It’s not a booking site. Instead, think of it as an aggregator: Kayak scans hundreds of third-party travel and brand websites and shows you the best prices. That means you’ll likely find a wider range of pricing for a single room or rental car than you would on direct booking sites.

Kayak shows you a list of pricing and booking options for every flight, rental car or hotel from dozens of individual travel operator websites, including other popular booking platforms like Priceline and Booking.com (Kayak is owned by the same company as those two).

To find the best travel deal, select what type of travel you want to book and insert your dates and destination. You can search for:

Rental cars.

Vacation rentals and more.

Then, Kayak shows available options from multiple companies and booking platforms.

super travel kayak

Take flights, for example. When you search and see an option that suits you, click on the listing for more details and information on where you’ll be booking, then click “View deal” and Kayak will transfer you to the booking website, whether that’s an airline website or a different OTA like Expedia.

super travel kayak

If there’s a drop-down menu, that means there are various booking and pricing options for your selected itinerary and you can click on the arrow to check prices across multiple platforms.

super travel kayak

Booking a hotel works about the same way. Perform your search, browse the list of available options, then click on the property listing to see more details and prices across multiple platforms. Click “View deal” to be taken directly to the booking page on the site with the best price. There, you may be shown similar properties for even more booking options.

super travel kayak

Rental cars work similarly, though the car rental company will be displayed on the search page in addition to details about the cars available.

Kayak is just as reliable as other travel search engines, so there’s no need to wonder, "can I trust Kayak?" In reality, it can often be more reliable than third-party booking sites since its users are driven to individual travel providers for booking. This act of booking directly often means you’ll have access to better customer service in case your plans change, you have to adjust your travel schedule or you want to update a booking. Since Kayak isn’t a booking platform, their customer service can’t help with those issues.

Do be aware that price fluctuations are a possibility. Occasionally, you may conduct a search that reveals one price, then, when you select “View deal” and are taken to the booking page of another website, you could see a price change alert and a slightly different deal than was just listed on Kayak.

Likewise, it’s not a bad idea if you book a hotel using one of the third-party sites listed to call and confirm your reservation as sometimes third-party bookings can get lost in the shuffle. And keep in mind that if you’re hoping to earn points for your stay, the easiest way to do so is to book directly with the provider.

There are, of course, tips and tricks for getting even better deals on travel when using Kayak.

Use search filters and price calendars

For hotels and other stays, you can select filters like:

Hotel chain.

Neighborhood.

Review scores.

Specific amenities like free parking and breakfast.

Star rating and more.

There’s also a color-coded calendar that highlights what days might be cheaper for travel, which could help you locate a better deal if your plans are flexible. Search flexibility based on price isn’t as robust as on search sites like Google Flights, which offers detailed graphs, charts and calendars, but there are still options.

Consider a Hacker Fare

It sounds like cheating, but these fares are legit. They usually occur when Kayak finds a great deal on a round-trip flight by utilizing multiple airlines. For example, the cheapest round-trip flight Kayak found from Miami to Boston was a departing flight on American Airlines and a return flight on JetBlue Airways booked through Expedia.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilising the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was August. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and July the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying direct is not possible and you will have to fly with stopover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a stopover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than direct flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.co.uk/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible 'weekend' or 'month' search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United Kingdom over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs, but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re travelling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 week before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 week prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with car hire, holiday packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional return ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Kayak is one of the many websites out there to help you find the best travel deals.

However, unlike other popular OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) that Kayak often gets lumped in with, Kayak is not an OTA — it’s a metasearch engine for travel deals.

Kayak shows you prices from other websites and will send you to that website to complete your booking.

Plus, with tools like Flight Tracker, Guides, and Kayak Trips, this site acts as an assistant travel planner. You can research and organize all aspects of your trip in 1 spot. That all sounds great, right? But how do you actually use Kayak!?

Overall, searching for travel on Kayak is easy as long as you know a few simple tips and tricks to find the best deals.

This guide will show you everything you need to know to use Kayak to search for and book your next trip.

Kayak Flights

On the home page, Kayak shows your “Recommendations” and routes to “Popular Destinations” based on your home city all before beginning your first search.

These sections are for very specific flights and dates, so they might not be much help if you’re looking for a certain itinerary. However, if you are flexible, these sections offer some great deals!

For example, I found flights for as little as $79 round-trip from my home airport to popular destinations like Orlando and Myrtle Beach. I also found a round-trip from my home airport to Dublin, Ireland for only $648!

Many of these deals are for flights as close in as 2 weeks, so if you’re looking for a last-minute travel deal, Kayak is a great place to start your search.

Hot Tip: You can change the origin city for your Recommended flights and Popular Destinations by doing a flight search with the new city as the origin.

To start your search on Kayak, input your departure city, arrival city, and dates; then hit “Search” just as you would on any other website. This will take you to the next page, which shows a list of available flights. This is the main booking page and it includes a wealth of information.

By default, the results will automatically populate sorted by “Recommended.” You can adjust this setting to sort by Cheapest, Quickest, Earliest Takeoff, Latest Takeoff, Earliest Landing, or Latest Landing. To do this just select how you want to sort using the drop-down on the upper right-hand side of the screen under the main search bar.

This is a great feature that lets you include any baggage fees in the price you’re seeing. Since baggage fees can vary between airlines, this is a great way to see an actual cost comparison without having to search separately for each airline’s baggage fee policy.

Right underneath the Fee Assistant is a large box with a featured flight in it. Keep in mind that this is a sponsored ad, meaning the featured airline paid to be there. While this doesn’t automatically mean the featured deal is bad, it’s smart to keep in mind that it’s not featured simply because it’s a good deal!

This little box at the top left of your screen gives you Kayak’s best estimation of how prices might change in the next week. The box will tell you if it’s a good time to buy, or whether you should wait. This estimation is only for the following week, so I recommend taking their advice with a grain of salt.

If you toggle “Track Prices” to ON, you can create a custom price alert for your itinerary . This requires an email address and automatically sets up an account for you with Kayak.

Kayak's Flight Predictor

Under the “Our Advice” box on the left side of your screen, you can go into lots of detail about your flight preferences. Customize your list of available flights using any of the following filter options:

  • Number of Stops
  • Booking Sites
  • Flight Quality
  • Layover Airports

Narrow flight search results on Kayak

On the right-hand side of your screen, you’ll see this box where you can compare what you find on Kayak to numerous online travel agencies and travel websites.

Clicking on the “Compare” button will take you directly to the chosen website and automatically search your itinerary.

The main middle section of the page is where you’ll find available flights for your chosen route. Click on “View Deal” to see more information about the flights and complete your purchase.

Depending on the route you’re choosing, the View Deal button will take you to either the airline’s website, Kayak’s booking tool, or another OTA such as Expedia or Orbitz to complete your purchase. You will be able to see where the booking is from right above the orange button.

On some flights, there is more than one booking option, but thankfully Kayak features the lowest price option first. To view other options for your chosen flight, click on the down arrow next to the orange View Deal button. This will display a drop-down box of all the prices on different websites.  Please note that this is not available on all flights.

Bottom Line: Kayak is not an online travel agency — it’s a travel search engine.

On some flights, instead of seeing the airline displayed under the price, you will see “Hacker Fare.” Don’t worry — nothing is being hacked and these prices are totally on the up and up!

All this means is that Kayak found a good deal on a flight by bundling 2 one-way tickets (usually on different airlines) instead of a round-trip on 1 airline. This can be a great way to get the best deals.

Kayak Hacker Fare

The only thing to keep in mind with these Hacker Fares is that you have a little less protection if something goes wrong.

Let’s say you’re going to Chicago for a long weekend, but bad weather cancels your outbound flight. Since it was a short trip, you just decide to cancel the whole thing. If you had a round-trip ticket, you’d have much more leverage to get a refund for the second leg of your trip.

But since you booked a Hacker Fare, your return flight is a one-way on a different airline, meaning that return flight has no real relationship to your outbound flight. It would be hard to get a refund for the second leg of your trip; as far as the airline is concerned, this is stand-alone flight. While this is a fairly rare situation, it’s good to be aware of if you purchase a Hacker Fare flight.

Another way to search for flights on Kayak is at the bottom of the home page, where you’ll see a number of popular cities. Click on “Flights” directly under the city name to bring up a page that shows lots of flight deals from your home airport to your chosen destination. These are all for specific dates, so again flexibility is the key to making this tool work for you.

Search for cheap flights on Kayak by destination.

This is a cool feature that is a little hard to find. On the top menu, click on the drop-down box from the “More” tab, and then click on Explore.

Using this tool, you can select your home airport, date range, price range, and trip duration to see where you can fly within those parameters. It’s a fun way to choose a destination when you have an idea of when you might like to travel but aren’t sure where you want to go.

If you hover over the price box on the map, you can see what city the flight arrives in. Once you’ve found your destination, click on the city name, then click on “Find Flights” on the right side to choose your flights and complete the booking.

You can also use the Kayak Explore tool to search for a themed trip, such as Amazing Beaches, Family Friendly Cities, UNESCO Sites, or Hiking Hot Spots. After choosing your home airport, dates, price range, and travel time, choose your travel theme on the right side of the page. This will narrow your search to only destinations featuring the theme you chose.

Kayak Explore

Sometimes having a day or 2 of wiggle room in your travel plans can save you big bucks! Using the 3-day flex search tool, you can see your selected travel dates plus or minus 3 days. This is a great way to see if you can save some money with a little flexibility.

To use this feature, select “Flexible Dates +/-” on the left side of the calendar drop-down box. You can also choose a Flexible Weekend or Flexible Month search. Now when you click on the Search button, you’ll see a chart of prices so you can easily see the cheapest days to fly to your chosen destination.

Hot Tip: Even a day or 2 of flexibility can lead to big savings! Be sure to search for your trip with flexible dates to see your best options.

This is a cool page under the “More” drop-down on the main menu. Click here to see all the places you can fly directly from your home airport. This tool also displays the approximate flight time, distance, and airlines that fly the specific route. It’s a pretty neat tool to check out if you’re looking for a destination you can fly to without a layover.

Occasionally it will appear that the flight you chose is bookable through Kayak ; this will show up as a Kayak price. However, while it looks like you’re booking through Kayak, you are really only using Kayak as a user interface — the booking is actually through a third party (usually an online travel agency like Travelocity or Priceline ).

This is important to know: if you have any problems, you will need to contact the party through which you booked, not Kayak. In this case, the ticket was booked through Priceline even though the user didn’t click through to that website.

Booking Flights On Kayak

Kayak Hotels

Searching for a great hotel on KAYAK is really simple. First, choose “Hotels” from the top menu. Then input the number of rooms, number of guests, city, and dates you’re looking for — click on the magnifying glass icon to search.

On the left side of the page, you’ll see all the options to filter your search. You can narrow your results by stars, review score, price, freebies, location, neighborhood, amenities, ambiance, and property type.

Right above all of the search options is a box to click through to a map, which shows your chosen city with all the hotels marked on it. Hover over each dot to see the hotel name, rating, and price, or click on each dot to continue with booking that hotel.

Hot Tip: You can also search for popular areas for eating, sightseeing, shopping and nightlife on this map.

The middle section of your screen will have a list of all the hotels available for your chosen dates. Just like with flights, these default to being sorted by “Recommended.” If you want to sort by price, adjust the settings at the top right underneath the search box.

Note that the price you see to the right of the hotel name is not necessarily the cheapest price! However, the great thing about KAYAK is that you can see the prices for each hotel on lots of different OTAs as well as the hotel website. You’ll see these prices underneath the hotel name and rating; click the drop-down menu for a full list.

Prices shown for hotels don’t include taxes, which can be pretty high. For example, I searched for a hotel for a long weekend in Chicago and chose the Park Hyatt (listed for $475 per night from Expedia). When I clicked through to complete the booking, I discovered per night taxes of $82.66!

Hot Tip: Prices shown from hotel websites are not member rates. Be sure to check the member rates on your specific hotel’s website — they are usually lower!

When I clicked through to Expedia , Orbitz , Travelocity , and Hotwire , they all featured the $475 per night price and added taxes for a total of $2,230.64 for a 4-night stay.

However, when I went to book directly with Hyatt, I found a non-member total for 4 nights of $2,230.60 ($.04 cheaper), while the member price was $2,141.35 for 4 nights. So by signing up as a World of Hyatt member (which you should definitely do because it’s free!) and booking directly through Hyatt, you’d be saving $89.29.

Plus, you will be eligible to earn hotel points and take advantage of any elite status you may have when you book directly through the hotel’s website.

Another hotel available for the same weekend had an advertised price of $429 on all the major OTAs including Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Hotwire. This was also the price offered directly from the hotel, making the total for a 4-night stay booked through any of these sites $2,014.60.

Hot Tip: Booking a “Hacker Stay” fare can save big bucks on your next hotel stay.

However, this hotel had a “Hacker Stay” rate of $392 per night. The total price for the Hacker Stay was $1,839.45 — that’s a savings of $175.15 for the exact same hotel room!

When I clicked through to book, I found that this stay consisted of 1 night booked through Hotels.com and 3 nights booked through Expedia. If you choose this route, you’ll end up with 2 separate reservations and might have to switch rooms halfway through your stay (though the hotel can usually combine those reservations upon check-in).

Kayak Hacker Stay

You can save selected hotels to come back to later by clicking on “Watch” right under the orange View Deal button. This will automatically create a saved Trip for you with all your hotel selections.

To track prices for your search, just toggle the button at the top right corner of your screen (to the right of the search box) until you see a check mark.

Kayak Car Rentals

To start your search for a car rental on Kayak , simply input your chosen city plus dates in the search bar at the top of your screen. At the top left you can choose whether you want to drop off the car at the same or a different location as pickup.

Clicking on the calendar icon will bring up a drop-down box to choose your dates, pick-up time, and drop-off time. You can also choose to bring up comparison sites underneath the location box to view prices at Hertz , Hotwire , Priceline , Budget, and Avis .

Just as with searching for flights or hotels on Kayak, searching for rental cars follows a similar pattern. To the left of your screen you’ll find all the options to help narrow your search. You can choose to sort your search by car capacity, car type, payment type, rental agency, price, and other car options like number of doors or type of transmission.

After you narrow your search, all your options will be featured in the middle of your screen. Above the list you can choose how to sort your results (recommended, lowest price, or distance), and you’ll see an alert if it’s a good time to book.

Kayak Car Rental Search

Each listing will tell you the type of vehicle, bag capacity, number of doors, rental company, and whether this is a Special Rate. These Special Rate deals will keep the car rental agency hidden until booking is completed. Use the drop-down arrow in the orange box or section on the right side of the screen to compare Kayaks pricing to other websites.

In an example search, I found car rental prices all over the map. I searched a midsize car for 4 days in Chicago and came up with a price of $200. This doesn’t include tax, so you do have to click through to your chosen website to see what the actual price will be. Here is what I found:

  • Kayak – $216.40
  • Orbitz – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Thrify – $216.40 (I clicked on their “hot deals” button and got the price down to $207.69)
  • Cheaptickets.com – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Rentalcars.com – Didn’t show price at all

There was also a “Special Rate” available for a similar midsize car for only $139.19. If you aren’t picky about exact car type or who you rent from, these Special Rate prices offer a great deal.

Kayak Packages

Lots of people use OTAs and travel search engines to find great vacation package deals. To see Kayak’s deals , click on “Packages” in the search bar at the top of your screen. From here you’ll see a search bar just like in the Flights section.

First, fill in your destination and dates to get a list of flights. Once you select the flight you want, you’ll be able to add a hotel to make a package deal.

Bottom Line: You can save money by booking your hotel and flight together through Kayak’s “Packages” option.

Right underneath your chosen flight you will see the “Add a Hotel” section. To see what kind of deals I could get, I searched for a 5-night trip from Boston to Las Vegas. This search returned 3 featured offers with varying levels of advertised savings, and I could see more deals by clicking on the blue “View More Hotels” button.

Hot Tip: The hotel offerings change quickly! The offers I had changed even when I did the same search only minutes apart. If you see something you like, you should book right away.

The first option was a hotel stay at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, which advertised a $367 savings. I tend to be skeptical about package deals, so I wanted to check it out myself. Booking this package including a round-trip flight plus 5 nights at Treasure Island would cost $800.86.

Booking the flight separately was $216.37, and booking the hotel directly through their website would be $951.60, for a total of $1,167.97 if booked separately. That does work out to a $367 savings when booking the package, which is pretty significant and exactly as advertised.

If you have a destination in mind and are looking to find the most inexpensive time to travel, Kayak’s Packages have you covered there too.

Scroll to the bottom of the Packages tab, and you will see a section called “Search Vacation Deals By Destination.” When you click on a city in this section, you’ll be able to see price trends throughout the year. This tool will show estimated pricing for a package each month, allowing you to pick the most economical option. (Keep in mind these are just estimates and actual prices may vary.)

Kayak Packages

Hot Tip: Kayak no longer has the ability to search for and book cruises.

Kayak Guides is a great tool to start planning some activities for your upcoming trip. Guides can be found by clicking on the “More” drop-down box in the main search bar at the top of your screen.

From here you can input your destination or search by region or popular destinations.

In each city guide, you’ll find general information about the area as well as suggestions on things to do, places to eat, most and least expensive times to visit, and even average weather throughout the year. You can see how to get there including links to take you to search for flights. You can also see information about different areas of the city including links to hotels in that area.

One of my favorite parts of this tool is the map of the city that shows you popular areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife. Just click on the item you want to see and watch the colors on the map change to reveal the popular areas for your chosen activity.

This map also shows hotel locations. For more information, just click on a dot — this will bring up hotel info as well as a link to click through and book.

Kayak Guides Map

Bottom Line: Kayak Guides is a great resource to help plan every aspect of your trip, including best times to visit, local weather, and best areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife.

You can find Kayak trips in the upper right corner of your screen. This is where you can keep all of your trip information and itineraries in 1 spot. There are several options for managing this feature:

  • Add your trip manually
  • Connect your email inbox to import booking receipt emails
  • Forward your booking emails to [email protected].

Once your flights are added, you will be able to see real-time updates for check-in, flight status, and gate change information. Plus, you will be able to access your itinerary offline.

Hot Tip: Use Kayak trips to organize and share all of your vacation details.

If you are traveling with a group, you can share all the trip details with your group by creating a link to your trip information page. Once you’re viewing your trip details, look for the blue “Share” button, which brings up a link to your trip information that you can send to friends and family. You can also allow someone else to edit the trip information from this button.

Kayak Deals can be found under the More drop-down in the main menu. This section differs from Kayak Packages in that you can’t build your own trip; the deals you find here are set packages that all include different things (vacation packages, cruises, flights, hotels, etc.).

Some of these deals were straightforward and easily bookable through an OTA, while others were a little more complicated. For example, I found a 6-day Dublin and Killarney rail vacation package, but I couldn’t just click through and book right away. Instead, clicking through took me to an OTA where I’d need to request a quote. While that’s not really a big deal, it does take more effort than just hitting the “buy now” button!

While you might think Kayak is an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia or Orbitz, it’s really a different animal. Kayak is a search engine, and it’s a great tool to use to begin your travel planning.

The great thing about Kayak is that it compares prices between all the OTAs you’re familiar with (like Expedia and Orbitz), plus airline and hotel websites. This lets you see where the best prices are without having to go to each individual website.

Kayak also offers tools to help with planning and organizing your trips. It’s a 1-stop shop to research and plan any vacation you can imagine!

The Complete Guide to Booking Travel with Kayak

Frequently Asked Questions

How does kayak work.

Kayak is a travel search engine. It searches hundreds of travel sites including OTAs, discount suppliers, and the airline/hotel/car rental agency’s direct websites to show you all the options in 1 place.

How Do You Change or Cancel a Flight Booked on Kayak?

You will need to contact the provider that you clicked through to (airline, hotel, or an OTA) to book your reservation for customer service. If you booked on Kayak, then you can go to the Bookings area of the site (accessible through Trips) to get support and information on your specific flight/hotel stay/car rental, etc. However, most likely you will still need to contact the provider directly.

When Is the Best Time to Book Airline Tickets Through Kayak?

As with booking flights from any website, there is no real answer to this question. There are lots of factors that go into airline ticket prices, so it’s hard to pinpoint when a fare will be at it’s lowest. However, Kayak does offer a few tools to help you.

The “Our Advice” box in the upper left corner of your search screen gives you a short-term prediction of how prices might change in the following week. You can also track your search by changing the Track Prices button to “On.” This will trigger a daily Price Alert email advising you of the current price trends for your search.

Are Kayak Flights Refundable?

Generally, no. Any flight that you access through Kayak will be subject to the airline’s cancellation policy. However, any flight booked with a U.S.-based carrier at least 1 week before departure can be canceled up to 24 hours after booking without penalty. (Be careful with American Airlines, as their policy only allows you to hold a flight for up to 24 hours without payment)

Are Kayak Hacker Fares Safe?

Yes, Kayak Hacker Fares are safe as long as you understand how they work. Hacker Fares are simply a combination of one-way flights that are cheaper than a round-trip. These flights can be on separate airlines, which means the second leg of your flight might not be protected.

For instance, if bad weather cancels your outbound flight, you might decide to stay home and skip your trip altogether. But since your return flight is on a separate reservation, it will not be refunded like your canceled outbound flight. Overall, this risk is relatively minor, but it’s good to know before you purchase a Hacker Fare.

If you are booking a Hacker Stay for your hotel, this will consist of 2 separate reservations. The only downside to this is that you might have to switch rooms during your stay. However, many times you can ask the front desk to combine your reservations when you’re checking in.

Why Doesn't Kayak Show Southwest Flights?

Southwest fares are only available on Southwest.com. You will not be able to search for these flights on Kayak or any OTA like Expedia or Orbitz.

The Best Kayaks for Fishing and Floating

Paddle downriver, around a lake, or in the ocean with one of these boats.

Don’t let the hum of an engine scare your prized catch away. In a kayak, you’re only as loud as the splash of your paddle and the run of the hull on the water—and nearly any calm body of water is on-limits.

A vessel as versatile as a kayak comes in different shapes, lengths, and features to suit any excursion, from multi-day journeys to an afternoon out on the water. Perhaps you want plenty of storage space for tackle and gear or maybe you’d prefer a pedal system to keep your hands free for casting or photographing .

Kayaks that are long and narrow tend to be faster and more efficient when it comes to going the distance, but short, wide kayaks will take you to every nook with stability. If you’re searching for the best kayak for you, I have compiled recommendations for every type of adventure, whether you’re fishing , touring, or spending a relaxed day away from the shore.

The Expert: I've been kayaking for over 20 years. I've explored island coastlines in Fiji and French Polynesia by kayak and paddled through the waters of Hawaii, California, Western Australia, and Tonga. My grandparents used to race outrigger canoes, and my grandfather still loves to fine tune my paddling technique. My love of the ocean inspired me to create The Salt Sirens , a website dedicated to water sports. Articles I've written have appeared in outlets like Travel + Leisure , AFAR , Vice , Lonely Planet, and more.

What to Consider in a Kayak

Your first decision when buying a kayak is whether you want a sit-in or sit-on-top design. For relaxed recreation on relatively calm water, the type of kayak that’s best for you is a matter of personal preference. But certain features from each design lend themselves to particular types of kayaking.

pelican mustang 100x exo recreational sit in kayak

Sit-in kayaks are ideal for multi-day touring boat trips and running rivers. The upper deck provides a decent amount of protection from the water, especially when you add a spray skirt like you would use when whitewater kayaking.

This type of kayak also has more storage space, either in one or more covered hatches or within the bow and stern. However, this space below the deck can fill with water if you tip over, which can make righting the watercraft more challenging.

You won’t have to worry about that water issue with a sit-on-top kayak, which is the best choice if you are paddling in the ocean. The hull is sealed, except for a few small holes called scuppers that act as drains for any water that does find its way onto the deck.

Without an upper deck, some people find it is easier to get on and off of a sit-on-top kayak. Companies might add an elevated seat which provides a better vantage point and greater range of motion for kayak fishing. Just be warned that you will probably get wet while on board, either from paddling, water splashing against your boat, or a combination of the two.

Companies change the shape of a kayak depending on its intended use. A wider boat provides a more stable but slower ride, which is ideal for recreation and fishing. These types of kayaks typically measure between 28 and 36 inches across at their widest.

Faster boats, like touring kayaks, are narrower and longer (usually at least 11 feet) so they can move through the water more efficiently. Covering a lot of water quickly might sound appealing, but remember that the longer the kayak, the more difficult it will be to turn.

How a Kayak Tracks

Companies don’t just focus on the basic dimensions of a boat when designing a kayak. They alter the shape of the hull and can add accessories that help a kayak track, or stay on your chosen course despite choppy or windy conditions.

Kayaks with V-shaped bottoms and less curve from bow to stern track straighter than other designs. In rougher conditions, though, you’ll want a boat with a tracking fin, skeg, or rudder to provide more directional support.

A tracking fin and a skeg both extend from the bottom of the kayak, but whereas a skeg can be retracted while you are on the water, a tracking fin can only be removed before you leave terra firma. A rudder flips down from the boat’s stern and its angle can be adjusted in the water, which gives you the greatest degree of control and often the most tracking support.

Other Considerations

Pay attention to the weight of the boat, especially if you plan to frequently transport your kayak with a rooftop rack . The heavier the kayak is, the harder it might be for you to lift and carry it from one place to another. You should also make sure its capacity is large enough to safely carry you and any gear onboard. (For boats with elevated seats, make sure the chairs are rated to your needs, too.)

You should also find a boat with the features you want—kayaks meant for specialized activities have customized components. Fishing kayaks have more storage space, so you can haul your lures , tackle, rods , reels , and other equipment. The hull might even have a spot for your fishfinder ’s transducer.

And so you don’t have to juggle paddling and casting, fishing kayaks are typically operated with a pedal drive system, though this addition won’t come cheap or light. Like fishing boats, touring kayaks also have room for your gear and frequently come with bulkheads to keep water out of the bow and stern.

How We Evaluated These Kayaks

To determine the best kayaks, we researched the market, spoke with product managers, sought advice from experienced paddlers, and relied on both of our experiences using similar kayaks to the ones featured here.

We compared models based on their individual designs, features, weight, capacity, dimensions, and value for money. We also read reviews from expert sources, such as Paddling Magazine and Kayaker Guide , and consulted customer reviews on Amazon , Walmart , Dick’s Sporting Goods , Cabela’s , and REI . All this helped us narrow the list to the seven great options below.

The Old Town Loon 120 is a versatile kayak for paddlers who want to fish one day and go birding the next. The build quality is robust, with a durable rotomolded hull and narrow front keel for fast paddling and predictable tracking. Old Town has placed an emphasis on cockpit comfort with a stable seat with enough padding and ventilation for full days out in the water.

An adjustable foot brace helps with stability and control, especially when reeling in a big one. Gear practicalities are well thought out on this model, with a spacious storage compartment in the stern and smaller dry hatch area at the front of the cockpit, complete with cup holders, removable work deck and USB charging port. The front compartment isn’t completely water-resistant, so it’s wise to secure items in a dry bag.

A kayak that suits beginners yet is agile enough to grow into, the Pelican ARGO 100X is ideal for paddlers who want stability and comfort. Pack along your picnic supplies—they'll fit perfectly in the dry hatch at the front and bungee storage area at the back.

It’ll take quite a lot to tip this kayak, but if you do go overboard it’s easier to climb into compared versus most of its competitors. The main downside is its small backrest, though it’s possible to install a seat with more support. A padded footrest and knee pads adjust to your needs. A small workstation in front of the cockpit has a shallow cup holder and space for a phone. Pelican stands behind its product by offering a limited lifetime warranty.

Old Town pulls out all the stops for this premium fishing kayak. The hefty pedal-operated boat can haul up to 450 pounds, and at 36 inches wide, it is stable. The PDL Drive has bike-like pedals that can operate in forward or reverse. If you overshoot your destination, simply pedal backward to change directions.

Between the front hatch, side pockets, under seat storage area, and the well at the stern, you've got lots of room to stow your stuff. There’s also a horizontal rod storage system, three rod holders, accessory tracks, and a place to attach a paddle if you want the backup. Also available in a 12-foot model , the Sportsman PDL has a spot to mount your transducer, a padded casting platform, and comes with a tackle box.

The Tarpon is as feature-rich and versatile as it is popular. Reviewers commend the kayak for its comfortable and adjustable seat that features ergonomic padding. What’s more, while some sit-on-top designs have multiple built-in footrests, the Tarpon has an adjustable system for a custom fit.

The Tarpon has a front hatch, side compartments, a removable dry box near the seat, and a large mesh-covered storage well in the rear. Another feature is the water bottle strap that has a magnetic closure to quickly secure or release your water bottle or thermos .

The recreational kayak has a compatible rudder you can use if you will mostly be paddling on rough waters. It can also easily transform into a fishing rig; just mount rod holders and other gear to the accessory rails on the sides and behind the front hatch. When it’s time to cast, make use of the paddle holder on the bow.

Tricked-out fishing kayaks typically cost a grand or two (if not more), but by skipping the pedal drive system and keeping the feature set to only the essentials, Lifetime defies the norm with the Tamarack.

The kayak has a decent amount of storage between two covered hatches and the bungee cords at the bow and stern. There are also three rod holders, including one that adjusts, and a place to store your paddle while you cast. The padded seat keeps you comfortable as you wait for the fish to bite, too.

Of course, there are some trade-offs for your savings. The Tamarack is shorter than most fishing kayaks and has less capacity. That means you will cover less water in the same amount of time and will need to pack more efficiently. But you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal on a fishing boat than this.

Eddyline Kayaks has one of the most vocal fanbases out of any of the big kayaking brands, and the Eddyline Sitka LT Kayak is a beloved option for a reason. It paddles fast and straight, and it glides well even in heavy chop.

Generous storage space supports multi-day trips with three dry compartments (two in the front and one in the back), plus bungee cords across the deck. The cockpit is roomy, with enough foot space for taller paddlers. The skeg is retractable for more precise tracking. The carrying handles are also retractable, though they’re not the most comfortable to hold onto.

Keep your arms ready to reel in with the Perception Showdown, a pedal kayak that’s packed from bow to stern with fishing-friendly features. Capable of carrying 450 pounds, there’s enough capacity for your cooler, tackle, and whatever you catch that day.

You’ll find a dry compartment at the front, storage under the seat, and easy-to-access bungee storage at the back. Rod holders are at each side of the seat. An extra wide stern keeps the kayak stable. The supportive mesh seat is elevated above the deck for a better vantage point.

The sea’s the limit when it comes to kayak features and accessories. For many paddlers, the first thing they’ll upgrade is their paddle to one made from lightweight but strong carbon fiber. You might also want a more comfortable seat, roof racks for your vehicle, and a trolley for transporting your kayak if it’s too heavy to carry.

As for the kayak itself, opt for one that’s lightweight yet high-performance—these tend to be pricier—with dry storage compartments in lieu of open bungee compartments.

How do I choose a great kayaking spot?

With a kayak and a paddle, just about any body of water is open for exploration – but you’ll want to choose a safe place to do so. If you’re just learning to kayak, start by going to your local lake, river, bay, or lagoon that allows recreational watersports.

Ideally, somewhere you’re protected from high winds, waves, currents, and boat traffic. You’ll also want it to be a place where you can launch and land your kayak easily. Searching for kayak rental centers or paddling clubs near you is a good way to find a spot that’s kayaker friendly.

If I buy a portable kayak, what are the advantages and disadvantage?

Portable kayaks are ideal for paddlers who might have limited storage space, transport options, and prefer something they can carry on their own. Portable kayaks are typically inflatable, made from thick plastic compartments that inflate to a rigid structure. There are also foldable kayaks made from rigid sheets of plastic that fold open. Both types pack into a large backpack and are easily stowed and carried.

Because of the materials they’re made from, portable kayaks tend to be less durable and lower performance than traditional kayaks. There is usually also some set-up time required to inflate or arrange the kayak before launching it into the water.

What’s the best way to maintain a kayak both on and off the water?

Although most kayaks are generally durable, there are a few precautions you can take to help them last for years to come. When launching your kayak into the water, try to do so in an area away from sharp rocks and debris—this will prevent your kayak getting scuffed, scratched, or even punctured.

Once it’s out of the water, you’ll want to thoroughly rinse it off with fresh water to clear away salt, sand, or dirt. Saltwater left on the kayak attracts moisture from the air and can cause metal parts of the kayak, like any clips or screws, to rust.

Store it away from direct sunlight, too much UV ray exposure can weaken the plastic and warp the shape of the kayak.

What advice do you have for beginning kayakers?

If you’re new to the sport, start by learning to kayak in calm water, like a bay or lake where you won’t have waves, currents, or chop to contend with. Spend your first few sessions with a kayaking guide to learn paddling and safety techniques.

Always wear a life jacket . Before you venture out on your own, master the skill of flipping your kayak upright while in the water and getting back into your boat if you fall overboard. It’s always safer to kayak with a friend.

What’s one criteria you pay close attention to when reviewing and paddling kayaks?

Although kayaks vary in length, capacity, and purpose, comfort is the highest priority when it comes to choosing the right kayak. It doesn’t matter how well-built a kayak is—if it’s uncomfortable to paddle in, it’ll do little more than collect dust.

I first check to see that the kayak is suited to my size and skill level. Am I able to paddle predictably and without discomfort? Oftentimes, the seat is the main culprit for discomfort. If I feel any pinching, chafing, or back pain, I adjust the seat to see if that helps.

Fortunately, most kayaks, including budget to mid-range models, have seats that can be swapped out for a more comfortable fit.

I love this because of its portability. In fact, after using it for the first time, I bought another one for my wife! We are planning on taking this on future RV travels.

I was really looking forward…

I was really looking forward to receiving the Super Kayak...all I got was super ripped off. Beginning to think this is a bogus company. I paid , got a receipt and confirmation it had been sent and delivered. However it never arrived and the shipping information was all wrong and now I can't even reach the company to get a replacement or a refund .Hopefully someone at the company will see my post and respond ,

I had a great experience with Super

There was no hassle booking with Super, I got a great deal on a hotel in NYC. I had never used super.com before and was slightly worried about the booking process but they provided us with helpful notifications and in the end we were extremely happy with the hotel we booked. I totally recommend booking with them!

Overdrafting and lies.

Was not given an option when paying back the advance as to which card the repayment was supposed to come from. I had 2 debit cards linked. They took the money from the wrong card and overdrafted my account. I spoke with customer service and was told they would refund the money as soon as I could prove the error. I have brought the proof to their attention and am yet to have anything resolved.

Reply from Super.com

Hi Mindy, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It's important to know that your account is set up so that your cash advance will be repaid automatically though you can opt out of auto payment. If you haven’t opted out of auto repayment, the funds are removed from your Super deposit account on the day the funds are due. If there are insufficient funds in your Super deposit account, a repayment will be initiated from your linked funding source. Automatic repayment will be initiated from your most recently linked debit card. If you do not wish to use automatic repayment, you can do manual funding to pay for your cash advance. When manual funding is enabled, you will only be able to spend the funds that have been manually transferred into your Super deposit account. If you attempt to make a purchase which exceeds this amount, the transaction will be declined. When manual funding is disabled, we will spot up to $500 per purchase and automatically initiate repayment from your linked debit card which will allow you to complete the transaction. This limit will increase over time and with consistent usage; however, if you need to make a purchase which exceeds your current limit, you can add funds to your Super deposit account first to boost the amount you can spend. Please note that you must have a linked debit card to access this feature. If you would like to opt out of automatic repayment for your cash advance and enable manual funding, please give us a call at 1(844) 461-2577. We’re here to help Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 7 PM ET. If it is within 3 business days of the due date, you will not be able to opt out of the current repayment cycle. If you were charged an overdraft fee on your bank account or debit card due to transactions to your Super Pay deposit account, please send us a receipt or picture of your overdraft fee on our email at [email protected] and we will submit a request to credit your Super Pay deposit account. We trust this clarifies matters for you.

Not refunded

Recently made a booking for a double room, paid extra cca 30 euros. When I came to the hotel they said only single was booked. Then contacted super.com support, who said there is nothing they can do about it. Giving it two stars rather than one as prices are generally lower then other apps.

Hi Jack, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We've checked our records and see that your reservation is booked under Single Standard Room Only room type which correctly showed at the hotel's system upon your check in. Please note that we cannot modify any reservations or change your research. Reservations are made based on your search criteria. It's important that you double-check your booking details before you complete your reservation. This includes checking the booking details. It's also a good idea to review our cancellation policy so that you know what to expect if you need to change or cancel your reservation. Please note that your reservation was made for a non-refundable booking, which limits our ability to modify or cancel it without the hotel's approval. We hope we have clarified your doubts and concerns.

Very welcoming and helpful

Very welcoming and helpful from the moment we arrived and because our room was ready they let us check in early which was excellent. They gave us a welcome refreshment and explained everything we wanted to know. Our room was spotless and bright and the bed was really comfortable. We had some drinks at the bar when we returned from our night out and they have a decent selection to choose from. After a great nights sleep we had breakfast which was enjoyable and although the fruit juice dispenser had broken down there was plenty other beverages to go around. All the staff we had dealings with were polite and pleasant and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Moxy.

Smooth booking and check-in

Had a good experience with my booking, I arrived at the hotel and checked in smoothly. I received a text message reminder a day before my stay. The only downside is that you can’t cancel or change a reservation, but it is stated clearly before you reserve.

Great price from super.com

I’ve never used super.com before but everything was hassle free and I got a great deal on Disney’s Pop Century resort.

Awesome experience with super.com

First time using Super as a 3rd party to book a hotel room. I had a great experience, super easy to book through. Had a better rate than the other major 3rd party options and got exactly what I requested and paid for. I just hope they don't get greedy like the other guys and start jacking up their rates to get more money.

Date of experience : March 25, 2024

So I was doing their pay for cash…

So I was doing their pay for cash games, followed all the rules, bought what I needed to buy waited 5days purchased even more credits hoping I'd get my 54$ from doing a 3rd party game they HAVE ON THEIR APP TO DO.... nope. Customer service asked me to take screenshots of things that are now in the past and can't be done. They tell me that i didnt follow directions and then ignore me when i respond. So I'm out 40$ and they don't seem to care. DONT USE THEM. THEY WILL WASTE UR TIME AND MAKE U SPEND MONEY IN HOPES FOR A BOOST. Even on the app it says they verify INSTANTLY, no it don't or I'd have my credits. This is false advertisement at its best. UPDATE: I TRIED RESTARTING THE APP EVEN SIGNED OUT BUT STILL GOT NO REDEMPTION GO FIGURE! FALSE ADVERTISEMENT TO THE FULLEST.

Hi Tanya, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Rewards could take up to 14 days to pop into your account. Try restarting your app if you have not received your credits yet. If you are still having issues, please contact our trusted partner directly by reporting the problem within the offer. If you have any other questions about Play for Cash, please visit our help center at help.super.com and visit the “More Ways to Save” section. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Deceptive Added Charges

Not thrilled. Upon arriving at my hotel, I was required to pay an additional amount equal to 10% of the room cost for resort and parking fees. After contacting super.com with my grievance, I was told this is a normal practice and that their agreement states I can expect these charges. I find this deceptive and these charges should have been a transparent part of the room rate.

Date of experience : March 21, 2024

Hi Mark, Thank you for reaching out regarding your reservation. We understand that encountering unexpected fees can be surprising. It's important to note that hotels often have standard practices of charging a mandatory deposit and/or resort fees directly to guests. Please note that the listing did include the room rate and hotel fees in their listing. Super Travel displays the room rate and then the additional hotel fees are in the "About" section of the hotel card, both pre-booking and in the customer's voucher post-booking and payment receipt. This is separate because they are not charged by Super Travel but rather mandatory payments to be made directly to the property and at their sole discretion. We trust this clarifies matters for you.

Actually appreciate the updates as this…

Actually appreciate the updates as this situation was unfold and being resolved. Thank you for your commitment to resolving this for me. I am homeless and I appreciate you understanding that this was a need-based on practice and integrity. Thank you, God bless you.

So simple, best prices

So simple. Standing at the check in counter at a premium hotel and needed one extra night. $520z. Looked on super and booked it for $290. So easy.

Best rates and easy to use.

Super had the best rate available and booking was a breeze. Anyone should know when you pay for the room in advance you will need to put down a security deposit. It's standard procedure so don't bully the person working the front desk about it.

What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights.

  • This is first time we have reserve hotel room and we are satisfied and also with price offer compare to others.
  • Upon checking in the front desk , staff were wonderful.

Critical highlights

  • Not only does super.com have the worst customer service , the hotel had an additional resort fees upon arrival.
  • What would've happened if we didn't have another credit card with another thousand dollars on it?

“First time user”

First time I've had the pleasure of using Super.com for booking my holiday accommodation and I'm absolutely delighted that I chose to take the plunge and use a company I'd never previously heard of. Everything about my experience is positive. Booking was seamless, communication excellent, so what's not to like. Will certainly be using again and will recommend to my family and friends.

“Scum bags”

If I could give this company zero stars I would. Everything starts out nice you build up a nice credit line then even though you pay on time they keep cutting the amount in half. You will get hung out to dry by them eventually and it always comes when you most need it. They do nothing to help you and an Indian u can't understand is customer service. Cheap piece of $#*! company out to scam people. $#*! em I hope their building burns down with the owner inside it

Hi there, the hotel rates we sell are dynamic, which means they're always changing based on demand and availability. We do our best to find the most competitive rates, but have no control over price fluctuations. The taxes and fees that you see in your confirmation voucher are comprised of applicable local taxes & service fees. While charging fees is necessary for running a business, we do try to keep them as low as possible to provide our customers with the best rates.

Can you share a success story using snaptravel? Can you share a success story using snaptravel?

They are a horrible company and with horrible customer service. They talk down to you and even when their website is wrong and they book your room different than what you picked online, they refuse to help you fix it. They threaten you with nonrefundable and if the hotel wants them to call and cancel they will not. They ask for a written letter from the hotel. Really the worst travel site around. You think you are saving money and you truly are not, you are not getting what you think you paid for and then they have the nerve to ask for a huge tip because they tried to help save you money.

Booking number b_11565655. the date should be oct 28/23-29/23 Booking number b_11565655. the date should be oct 28/23-29/23

The question the answer is if you use this company and one little thing goes wrong you can say goodbye to your money. My train canceled the hotel didn't get any money I didn't get any money back and super.com has a secret partner that gets the money but they won't tell you who they are

How do i verify my reservation How do i verify my reservation

Both motels were okay with changing the reservation that was wrong we made in Arizona to putting the reservation to the motel in Lewiston Idaho but these idiots wouldn't help and switch it kept my $75 and I didn't get a room when I asked to speak to the supervisor or higher up manager they refused and hung up on

I cannot accept refund fee. I cannot accept refund fee.

I do not understand, is this a question. They more than likely wont refund anyone. They pretty much refuse to refund anyone and this Travel Booking site asks for TIPS.

We booked a hotel reservation through super.com. #b-13548294. we received a notice from the hotel that our reservation has been cancelled.

How to cancel online subscription fee, i've never used your services and you're trying to take 15 from me please stop, super.s am has a secret partner. not the hotel. this secret partner keeps your money. i have read so many reviews where people showed at hotel, there, can’t see your question ask to get answers from the super.com staff and other customers..

How can so many of you be so wrong?

I’ve written about airplane etiquette before, and I always thought the rules were pretty obvious, but it turns out, not so. Etiquette depends on a shared understanding of right and wrong, and apparently, we can’t even all agree on airplane armrests.

I’ve always thought it was an unwritten but absolute rule that the person in the middle seat gets access to both armrests as a courtesy. However, a 2023 survey by online booking platform Kayak polled more than 1,000 adults and found that more than half of you (57%) disagree with the idea that if you’re in the middle seat, you get to claim both armrests – which is honestly crazy because, in matters of decency, I am always right.

“Obviously we travel a bunch ourselves at Kayak and one of the things that we had noticed increasingly is the airport has always been one of the places where rules are super strictly enforced, but then rules are also out the window,” Matthew Clarke, vice president of North American marketing for Kayak told me. “You can have a margarita at 6:30 in the morning,” but you can’t bring more than 3.4 ounces of liquid through security.

So what’s the deal? Who gets the armrests and what are the other unwritten and unenforceable rules of air travel?

Who gets the armrests?

There’s no definite answer.

Disclaimer: I don’t care about the survey results. I will stick by the adage that the window seat person gets to control the shade, the middle seat person gets both armrests, and the aisle seat person gets to benefit from a little extra legroom and the convenience of standing up whenever they want to.

But, according to Kayak’s survey, only 43% of air travelers agree with me. Even Clarke said he was surprised by that result.

“This is what you get when you poll 1,000 people,” he said, nodding to how little common ground we have on some things.

Joe Schulz, 38, said he flies at least two or three times a month and is one of the people who disagrees with me.

“Maybe 10, 15 years ago, I was like yeah, middle seat people, they should get that armrest. But now it’s like, nah, it doesn’t make sense,” the Los Angeles resident told me. He said as airplanes pack more people into economy, he sees the armrests more as a physical barrier between seats than anything else – a line that’s not to be crossed or infringed upon.

“Regardless of whether you chose to sit in the middle, I don’t think you’re entitled to the armrest,” he said. “As soon as that person in the middle puts their arms on the armrests, you’re getting jabbed by their elbows.”

Still, with 57% of travelers in Schulz’s camp, a fair number seem to agree that the middle seat person should get both armrests.

“I’d say it’s an unwritten rule, but it’s written a lot, just not a policy. It’s common courtesy,” Ryan Gregg, 49, told me.

Gregg, an automation technician from Lawrence, Kansas, flies about twice a week and said he’ll often switch his flight if there are only middle seats available. However, if he has no other choice, he expects access to both armrests.

“It’s the one thing you get for being stuck there,” he said.

Last week's Cruising Altitude: What it was like onboard a special solar eclipse flight

What are the other unwritten rules of air travel?

We may not be able to agree about armrests, but at least 94% of us can agree that airplanes are not the right place to pop your pimples, according to Kayak. Actually – why isn’t that number 100%?

No matter their views on the armrest issue specifically, everyone I spoke to for this column agreed that being a decent seat neighbor is all that matters when flying.

“Just be a decent human being. You’re stuck together for, depending on where you’re going, quite a while. I just keep to myself and be courteous of others,” Gregg said.

“Just respect each others’ personal space,” Schulz added.

“What we like to say is just be good people,” Clarke agreed. “Traveling is a lot of fun and a lot of stress, we just encourage people to be good people to each other.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, they didn’t all have the exact same ideas on how to carry that advice out, but as frequent travelers, they all had good insights on what matters when you fly:

  • Help everyone maximize overhead bin space by consolidating your stuff
  • Don’t let anyone else hear your electronics
  • Give the person behind you a heads-up before you recline your seat

But really the best advice of all is to keep reading Cruising Altitude for all the latest air travel and flying etiquette tips.

From now until Saturday, April 20, shoppers can score up to 50 percent off on the retailer’s top-selling beauty, skincare, and hair products from popular brands like Fenty Beauty, Tarte, It Cosmetics, and so much more.

Back in the day, I devoted a significant amount of time assisting shoppers in deciphering the best savings from sales of this caliber, and now as an avid traveler and your personal shopping expert, I’ve curated a list of can't-miss deals to ensure that you get the best bang for your buck and stock up your toiletry bag with the latest and greatest. Complete with spray-on sunscreens and luxurious hydrating serums , these incredible Ulta sale finds start at a mere $7. So what are you waiting for? Keep reading to get started on crafting the perfect haul.

Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50 Face Mist

If you didn’t know, you should ideally be re-applying your sunscreen every few hours for the most protection against the sun. But, if you wear makeup like I do, it can be hard to reapply after you’ve put on your glam. That’s why I absolutely love this sunscreen spray, which acts like a SPF setting spray to give you round-the-clock sun protection without interfering with your makeup; just spritz some on when you need it and you're good to go. And as if it couldn’t get any better, it’s on sale for $17, and it's made with skin-friendly ingredients like vitamin E, aloe, and caffeine to give your skin a hydration and brightness boost.

It Cosmetics Mini CC+ Cream With SPF 50 Travel Size

If you’re packing light and only prioritizing items that do double (or in this case, triple ) duty, then you need this tinted SPF color-correcting cream. It not only nourishes your skin (which means that you can leave your moisturizer at home if you want), but it also smooths and protects your complexion with its medium-to-full coverage and SPF 50 formula. This mini version is the ideal size to throw in your toiletry bag , and if I were you, I’d snag it while it's half off this week.

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray Travel Size

Aptly named, this Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray has completely changed my hair care routine. If there was anything that I could compare it to, it would be witchcraft, as this product coats each hair in a waterproof seal that combats frizz for up to three (yes, three ) washes. I have very curly and frizzy hair, and one generous coat of this spray leaves it soft, smooth, and glass-like for days on end. I couldn’t recommend it more, especially to travelers who have to rely on drying hotel shampoos and conditioners. So if there’s one item that I'll urge you to try during this sale, it is this spray.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Travel Size

Few concealers have remained as iconic as Tarte’s Shape Tape formula for its ability to seamlessly cover dark circles, blemishes, and discoloration without appearing too cakey or settling into fine lines. I’ve personally been using this concealer for years, and its slightly mattifying formula makes it perfect for the upcoming hot and humid months. Even though the travel size is great for trips, the full-coverage nature of this concealer means that it will last a long time. In fact, I honestly don’t even use it up in its entirety before its time to toss it for a new one. Consider this on-sale, $11 travel-size version a beauty hack for your travel and daily makeup routine.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser Travel Size

This French pharmacy skincare brand is a favorite among Travel + Leisure's globe-trotting editors , myself included, for its selection of high-quality hydrating and nourishing products that genuinely work. I personally love this travel-friendly cleanser that leaves my skin feeling clean without overdrying it, and it can calm any redness or irritation from a long travel day. But my favorite part is that it's fragrance-free, which makes it perfect for sensitive skin.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum

Most of La Roche-Posay’s collection is on sale during this savings event, and while you can’t go wrong with adding anything from the brand to your travel skincare routine , I personally recommend this face serum — especially if you travel often and don't like being weighed down by a bulky toiletry bag. Between the stress of a travel day, intense exposure to UV rays, and stagnant plane air, flying makes your skin become incredibly dry and sensitive. But with this hydrating serum that’s formulated with moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid, wrinkle-smoothing dimethicone, and strengthening vitamin B5, it will stay plump, nourished, and refreshed — a.k.a it's the perfect all-in-one serum for your next trip.

No7 HydraLuminous+ Cooling Eye Gel

Shoppers rave that this cooling eye gel “leaves [their] eye area feeling soft and supple” and that they are incredibly “impressed” with how effective it is at brightening stubborn dark circles. Travelers know that a long flight, road trip, or train ride can wreak havoc on the under-eyes (think: dark circles, puffy bags, redness, dryness, etc.), but thankfully, this lightweight gel is formulated with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to combat those common signs of fatigue, stress, and aging. In fact, the brand says that it can keep the skin hydrated for up to three days. The best part? It's currently on sale for just $12.

Pixi On-the-Glow Blush Tinted Moisture Stick

This genius moisturizing blush stick is formulated with ginseng, aloe vera, and other skin-friendly ingredients to not only give you a slight glow, but to keep your skin nourished all day long. I’m all in for beauty products that double as skincare, and with how much travel can impact our skin, it's a good idea to keep items in your toiletry bag that give it some extra TLC. Available in a coral-orange, light pink, and dark pink, it can suit multiple skin tones — and you don't need to pack lip balm or eyeshadow because this multipurpose product does it all.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Volumizing and Lengthening Waterproof Mascara Travel Size

The original Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara formula is highly loved for its volumizing formula, but did you know that it also comes in a convenient waterproof version as well? I personally always opt for waterproof mascaras for their long-wearing capabilities. And while some of these formulas have irritated my eyes in the past, I’ve found that this Too Faced's is surprisingly gentle for all-day, comfortable wearing. Plus, you can't beat the volumizing and lifting power that it possesses. SInce it's a travel-sized tube, you can keep it in your toiletry bag so you never forget to pack it.

Fenty Poutsicle Hydrating Lip Stain

Whenever I come across any Fenty Beauty products on sale, I always add them to my cart without hesitation. The brand, created by the one and only Rihanna, is renowned for its stunning and efficient formulas, and right now, you can get your hands on this hydrating lip stain for only $19. If you haven't experienced the wonders of a lip stain yet, consider this your golden opportunity to begin. Trust me, it’ll give you a glossy application and subtle tint that stays on throughout the day and will revolutionize your beauty routine entirely.

Shark Beauty Air Styling and Drying System

As a former Ulta employee, my top Spring Haul tip for shoppers was always to scout out the deals on hair tools since they rarely go on sale (and usually cost a pretty penny). By far, my favorite hair tool is this hair dryer-air styler hybrid that has everything that you need to do your hair. In fact, I’ve gotten rid of all of my styling tools because this product not only blow dries my hair , but it also curls, smooths, and diffuses out my natural curls depending on the attachment. Gone are the days of stashing multiple styling tools in your suitcase — and using the hotel hair dryer; with this all-in-one tool in your arsenal, you're ready for any trip.

It’s A 10 Miracle Keratin Kit Travel Size

Tired of dealing with frizzy, dry, and dull hair caused by harsh hotel toiletries? Or, having to waste time transfering your favorite products into travel bottles ? It's time to make a change and invest in a top-notch set of travel-sized hair care products. Look no further than It’s A 10, the popular hair care brand known for its nourishing and hydrating formulas. This on-sale kit includes everything that you need to keep your locks looking shiny and fabulous on the go: shampoo, conditioner, and a leave-in conditioner. Suitable for all hair types, even chemically dyed hair, this trio treats your hair to the hydration and nourishment that it needs — and it's only $21.

More than half the rooms at budget hotels nationwide were vacant during the first three months of 2024 as inflation-battered travelers cut back on spending, according to the latest data from the hotel industry.

Hotels like Econo Lodge, Days Inn, Super 8 and SureStay posted occupancy rates of  48.7% in the first quarter – down 5% from a year ago, according to preliminary first quarter data from STR/CoStar, which tracks the hotel industry.

The 51.3% vacancy rate has led to revenues per available room dropping 6.5% from the same period a year ago, the largest decline among all hotel segments, the data showed.

The results are “weaker than we thought,” Jan Freitag, national director for hospitality market analytics at CoStar, told The Post on Tuesday.

Midscale hotels, the next level up from economy that include chains like Best Western, saw revenue per room drop 4.5%. Upper-midscale hotels, such as La Quinta, declined 2%. At the other end of the spectrum, luxury hotels suffered just a 0.3% revenue drop, while upper upscale and upscale lodgings increased 3% and 0.4%, respectively.

“We are seeing a bifurcation in the US lodging industry, where higher-end hotels continue to perform well from increases in corporate travel and continued healthy demand from high-end leisure travelers, [while] people in a specific income level are traveling less,” Freitag said.

Room rates for luxury hotels are essentially flat from a year ago at $453 per night on average, while rates at economy properties are down 4% over the same period to an average of $70 per night, according to STR/CoStar data.

Never miss a story.

In March, the occupancy rate at lower-end hotels was 53% compared to 71% in the luxury market, according to STR/CoStart data.

The actual revenue decline in the economy sector is likely greater because the number of rooms have decreased by 2% as some of the hotels have simply closed or were converted to residential properties over the past year, according to the research firm.

There are other signs that consumers on a tight budget are pulling back.

In January, an American Hotel & Lodging Association survey found that 56% of consumers who earn less than $50,000 said that inflation would play a significant role in reducing the chances of them staying in a hotel over the next four months, while just 51% of people earning $100,000 or more said that inflation was a factor in booking a hotel stay over the same period.

But some budget properties are doing well, particularly in Sun Belt cities where a number of infrastructure projects are fueling demand for inexpensive rooms, according to a report in Skift.

Among the rising costs from a year ago weighing on consumers are car insurance (up 22.2%), car repairs (11.6%), rent (5.7%), housing (4.7%) and transportation up (4.2%), according to government data.

Michael Douglas jokes he and Catherine Zeta-Jones ‘seduce’ their kids to hang out with them with lavish vacations

They gotta pay to play.

Michael Douglas joked he and his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, “seduce” their two children, Dylan, 23, and Carys, 20 , into hanging out with them by offering them lavish vacations.

“Catherine and I are blessed with the fact that our kids Dylan and Carys still like to travel with us,” the legendary actor, 79, shared on Tuesday’s episode of the “Today” show .

“And so, we just finished five weeks in India at Christmastime. And we’re always planning next year, what our trips will be and where we’ll go.”

Douglas — who also shares son Cameron, 45, with his ex-wife, Diandra Luker — said it’s a “treat” having his adult kids around him.

“Especially when you’re not forcing them. [I] said, ‘Catherine, look, they actually want to hang out with us.’ I said, ‘You know, it’s good,'” he said.

“But we’ve got good trips. We seduce them with good places to go.”

Douglas and Zeta-Jones, 54, met at the 1998 Deauville Film Festival while promoting their films.

Douglas famously told the “Mask of Zorro” actress, “I want to father your children.”

The pair tied the knot in November 2000 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Although Dylan and Carys have two famous parents, that doesn’t mean they don’t embarrass them sometimes.

Last year, Dylan who is also an actor, said his dad tells a lot of “bad jokes.”

“More in terms of what he says, rather than who he is,” he exclusively told Page Six at the Broadway opening of “Good Night, Oscar” in April 2023.

“Just dad stuff. [He’s a] bit out of touch, bad jokes for sure!”

And in December 2022, Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams on “Wednesday,” compared Carys to her onscreen daughter’s character on the hit Netflix series.

“Carys, my real daughter as a little girl. 🤣,” the Oscar winner captioned footage of her daughter at a recital.

“I have had a Wednesday Addams in my life for 19 years and 9 months.🤣. Morticia and I love you my little rain cloud🖤.”
