Swarthmore College students create encampment in pro-Palestine demonstrations
Students at Swarthmore College have set up an encampment on campus and refuse to move until their demands that the school divest itself from Israel are met.
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Pro-Palestinian protests continue at colleges across the nation. Tents can still be seen at the University of Pennsylvania Friday, but Penn isn’t the only local campus with demonstrations.
About 30 tents and dozens of students are occupying Parrish Lawn in the center of campus at Swarthmore College, as the protest against the war in Gaza mirrors demonstrations happening on college campuses all over the country.
Student Ragad A. stated, "This is happening not just in the United States – this is happening globally. People who never cared about Palestine are here and joining our movement."
Temple, Penn, Princeton join growing list of pro-Palestinian protests
Tensions are high on college campuses across the country and here, in Philadelphia, as students at Penn and Temple gather to protest, along with students at Princeton University.
Protesters are demanding the school cut financial ties to Israel and withdraw any investment aiding Israeli companies.
"This is going to entail a lot of different things like financial transparency on what the endowment is being spent on," Ragad continued.
The demonstrations have been peaceful. In a statement to FOX 29, a spokesperson for Swarthmore College says, in part:
"We remain open and willing to explore more realistic ways to find common ground and bring this latest demonstration to a peaceful conclusion."

Some are ready for the protests to end. Swarthmore junior Owen Moss said, "I will say, the protests have made it a really challenging environment for Jewish students."
He has been walking by the encampment every day and feels the protest is taking attention away from the war itself. "All that I see is attention being taken away from the actual war. Which, regardless of your political views, it’s terrible. War itself is sad, but what I see all over the news now, it’s not about the war, not about real victims. It’s about these sit-ins and these college students who feel entitled."
College tours of potential students continue, strolling by the encampment of the area typically used for end of year graduation activities and with classes ending next week, protesters say they are not leaving until demands are met.
"Eventually our institution will have to address that we are occupying the most important space on campus, but again, we are willing to stay here so long. We won’t rest. We will stay here until our demands are met," Ragad added.
The demonstrations at Swarthmore add to an ever-growing list of local universities protesting, including University of Delaware, Drexel University and Haverford College.

Breaking News
Local news | 1 was killed in east lansdowne shooting monday night, local news | swarthmore college students set up camp opposing war in gaza.
Student groups at Swarthmore College have set up a camp to stand with Gaza.
About 20 tents are up on the lawn known as Parrish Beach in front of Clothier Hall.
The atmosphere on Wednesday was very quiet and looked much like any college campus in the spring with students lounging out enjoying the warming sun.
One group of students was in a circle in what they called a political education workshop. Others were sitting among the tents talking.
Ragad A., a student at the school, said the encampment is part of a national movement on campuses to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza and was organized by Students for Justice in Palestine, the Swarthmore Palestine Coalition and the Jewish Voices for Peace.
Ragad didn’t want to use her last name and students were not happy to be photographed because of concerns of being doxed they said
The students have three demands Ragad said the first is for the school to divest from Israeli occupation.
The second is for the school to denounce “scholasticide,” that is the intentional targeting of teachers, students, educations facilities. She said 12 universities in Gaza have been bombed.
The third is for the termination of a specific public safety officer on campus. She claimed that employee had racially profiled a student on campus.
Ragad said the students have been engaging in on campus events since Oct. 7, including a sit-in.
Asked if the school had been receptive to their demands, Ragad aid no.
“Unfortunately this institution is morally bankrupt,” Ragad said. “It seems to have forgotten it’s Quaker roots, which calls for peace and condemns anything relevant to war, genocide included in that.”
Acting co-Presidents Tomoko Sakomura, provost and dean of the faculty, and Rob Goldberg, vice president for finance and administration, sent a letter to school staff and students stating Swarthmore is deeply committed to freedom of expression, including the freedom to protest and dissent peacefully but the school is committed to building and maintaining a culture of accountability and informing members of the community that those who violate college policy will be held responsible for their actions.
“The encampment on Parrish is deeply concerning and will be included in our ongoing investigations into possible policy violations related to activism throughout the past several months,” the letter said. “We will work with the student organizers of this latest act of protest to try to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion, but this may take some time to resolve.”
Ragad said last semester students had received warnings for their activism and engaging for protests.
The students said they will stay there as long as their demands are not met, including through the May 26 graduation, which is traditionally held on the same lawn where students are camped out.
The students admitted the school can ignore the group’s demands, but Ragad believe incoming students will take up the cause.
“This movement is not something that exists in the four class years at Swarthmore right now,” Ragad said. “Even if there are people who are graduating, freshmen who are coming in are just as passionate about the movement.”
Ragad said the event was not begun as the same time Passover began and is not antisemitic.
“We are a welcoming space. If you see that banner, it says Jews for Palestinian Liberation. This is a movement that everyone is welcome to engage in.” Ragad said. ”Not a single person who choses not to participate will be shamed or receive any negative treatment from our end.”
