• Drink in the beauty of Lake Geneva, Western Europe’s biggest lake, home to great towns such as Lausanne and Montreux – known for its international jazz festival – as well as vineyards stretching up the slopes from the shore.

• The Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland is the longest in the world. Measuring 57km long, it is located 2.3km under the Alps and took 17 years to complete.
• A Swiss jeweller once crafted a ring made entirely out of diamonds that sold for a whopping $68 million.
• The winter sport of tobogganing was invented in Switzerland in the late 19th century. At the 1928 Winter Olympics held in St Moritz, the toboggan run was one of the first events.
• Zurich is home to over 1,200 fountains. The water flowing out of the pipes is of drinking quality and can be consumed without problem.

While it may be home to the chic ski resorts of Davos and St Moritz - preferred winter playground of well-heeled bankers, celebrities and even royalty - there’s more to Graubunden than meets the eye. Forget catwalk glamour on the slopes, this region is actually a very down to earth place where it’s easy to escape the hype and find some peace and solitude in this vast and stunningly beautiful unexplored region. You’re just as likely to come across farmers tending to their crops, craggy mountain pathways, vistas that will take your breath away and pure mountain air to refresh and revive. This is also the area that inspired Swiss author Johanna Spyri to write Heidi, one of the best-selling children’s books of all time and perhaps Switzerland’s most famous piece of literature.

Lake Geneva

There’s no escaping Lake Geneva, the vast, crescent-shaped lake that covers an area of more than 580km. This area is known as the Swiss Riviera and there are many different towns to explore, each one of them with its own distinct character. Geneva itself is a pleasant stop off where you’ll find a cobble-stoned old town, lakeside restaurants, clutch of interesting museums and some grand architecture. Lausanne is a cool, vibrant city inhabited by a hip crowd and some incredible Gothic buildings; perhaps surprisingly, it is also reputedly the skate boarding capital of Europe. Montreux is also worth a visit, not least to experience its world-renowned annual jazz festival.

Klosters and Verbier are the ski resorts of choice for the British royal family, while the Swedish royals have been known to head for the slopes of St Moritz. And it’s not hard to see why these resorts enjoy enduring popularity, with their traditional-style villages, extensive snow-sure ski areas, picture-perfect craggy peaks and excellent mountain restaurants. Gstaad is also up there with the best and offers one of the biggest ski regions in the Alps. Then there’s the mighty Matterhorn and possibly Switzerland’s most famous ski resort, Zermatt, one of the most expensive ski resorts in the region but also known for its unparalleled skiing conditions and Alpine chic.

Expect art, culture and wealth to be on show in this vibrant city that has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years. The Kunsthaus is one of Europe’s great modern art museums and should be included on any itinerary. Situated in the heart of central Europe, Switzerland’s history is invariably linked to its neighbours France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Much of its native population settled in the country during the Germanic Migration of Nations, which ended Roman rule in 400AD. In 1291 the ruling families of Schwyz, Unterwalden and Uri formed an alliance against the Hapsburgs and signed a charter to keep the peace and uphold an autonomous rule. This formed the basis of modern day Switzerland. The Zurich airport is a disaster with to small trains running between the terminals, the trains was overfilled (not good in Corona times). It was no directions in the airport with proper lines so you did not know if you ere standing in the right line. They checked your passport 3 times in the airport = a lot of standing in line. Service on the plane could be a lot better, The cabin crew could have offer more to drink (water, coffee, tea), the food sucked.

I found it weird that the quality of the flight different from Australia to Doha than the Doha to Berlin leg. The quality of the toiletries pack (was in a box from Australia) and then a proper bag from Doha. The biggest variation was the inflight entertainment, which had a significantly shorter amount of content compared to the Doha flight. My QSuite seat was also broken and did not recline all the way flat. Wasn’t the best and I wouldn’t be happy if I’d paid cash for the flight.

From Montreal to Doha , we habe two complaints : 1) They want to charge for Seat Selection, claiming that the Class of ticket bought on Kayak did not cover seat selection. It such a penny pinching rule, I told them, since we paid almost $20,000 our 3 tickets , that rule should never exist. Also I reserved my tickets so many months ahead, I expected they will naturally put the family together or move somebody else to keep our family seating together. I filed a complaint, and NOBODY ANSWERED. 2) In Montreal, Qatar has an arrangement with the National Bank Lounge. It was so overcrowded and the Lounge is so bad in terms of service and food, amenities etc... The WORST lounge . Why Qatar not have another arrangement their Business Class clients in Montreal. Overall it was a very good experience. Boarding was efficient and well organized. The cabin crew were excellent. The meals were tasty and quite filling. The warm bread rolls were a nice touch. Seats were comfortable even if they were a little narrow. Entertainment selection was excellent.

My seat that I booked over a year ago and some other passenger was sitting in it. They said they could not walk and they would not move. I was with my young kid and the crew did nothing to accommodate that. Just disappointed that the airline accepts that excuse from a passenger.

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the recent flight experience I had with your airline. This has been one of the worst travel experiences I have ever encountered, and I feel compelled to bring it to your attention. Firstly, I missed my flight due to what I perceive to be a lack of clear communication and coordination on the part of your staff. There was no remorse or apology from the airline's representatives, which further exacerbated the situation. As a result of missing my flight, I was subjected to a 24-hour delay at the airport, where I had to spend a significant amount of money to rent a hotel room and cover other incidental expenses. Additionally, since my baggage was already checked in from Tanzania to Turkey, I had to purchase essential items for the 24-hour period. What truly dismayed me, however, was the discourteous and unprofessional attitude of your staff. Their lack of empathy and understanding only added to the stress and inconvenience of the situation. I have been traveling abroad for over 20 years, and I can confidently say that this experience has been the worst I have ever encountered. As a result, I am compelled to reconsider ever using your airline again for future travel. I strongly urge you to address the issues I have raised and take immediate steps to rectify the situation. Additionally, I expect a formal apology and a refund for the expenses I incurred due to the airline's negligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your prompt response.

I will avoid this airline as much as possible. Service was rude, and I don’t think the crew knew how to answer a CALL LIGHT. I pushed my call light on the ohare to Istanbul and the Istanbul to Thailand flight because I was very very thirsty. NO ONE CAME. I pushed it twice! NO ONE CAME! Etihad broke my suitcase Also over charged me for luggage

1.Aircraft Comfort: The aircraft type was quite small with non-reclining, cramped seats that significantly lacked comfort. 2.In-flight Entertainment: There was no provision of in-flight entertainment screens or Wi-Fi for the majority of the flight. 3.Boarding Process at New Abu Dhabi Airport: Despite the move to a new airport, which promised enhanced experiences, the use of buses instead of jet bridges did not meet expectations, causing inconvenience. 4.Gate Change Communication: A last-minute gate change was poorly communicated, resulting in a long and difficult walk.

DCT Abu Dhabi and Etihad announce Stopover campaign to bolster tourism

A bu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has joined forces with Etihad Airways to launch the Abu Dhabi Stopover campaign, aimed at boosting tourism.

Authorities hope to attract more than 100,000 visitors to Abu Dhabi through the programme over the next year, Etihad’s chief executive Antonoaldo Neves said on Tuesday.

The campaign will invite guests flying through the UAE capital to turn their trip into a free stopover hotel stay and the “ultimate holiday” experience.

The announcement was made at the Arabian Travel Market event after the signing of an initial agreement between Saleh Al Geziry, DCT Abu Dhabi’s director general for tourism, and Mr Neves.

When booking flights with Etihad, travellers will now have the option to add a stopover and a complimentary hotel stay as part of the online booking process.

They can choose a free stay of one or two nights in a range of premier hotels across the city.

The campaign is exclusive to Etihad Airways guests and stopover packages are only available when booking directly online.

The programme offers an “exciting introduction to the emirate for curious visitors”, Mr Al Geziry said.

“This innovative initiative provides a snapshot of the diverse experiences available here – from entertainment and culture to leisure and beyond – inspiring travellers to return and immerse themselves in the complete Abu Dhabi experience.”

Abu Dhabi is working intensively to boost tourism.

The emirate recently launched the Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030, announced by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi , which aims to boost the sector's contribution to gross domestic product.

It comprises 26 initiatives across four areas – offering and city activation, which is geared towards enhancing visitor experience; promotion and marketing; infrastructure and mobility; and visa, licensing and regulation.

The plan aims to add Dh90 billion ($24.5 billion) to the country's economy annually by 2030, about 84 per cent higher from Dh49 billion in 2023, and attract 39.3 million annual visitors to Abu Dhabi, a 7 per cent year-on-year growth.

Etihad’s boarding pass will also double as an Abu Dhabi pass that offers discounts at many of the city’s leading attractions and dining experiences.

The airline connects more than 70 destinations worldwide through its home at the newly opened Zayed International Airport.

IT’S not often that I will turn to rom-coms for travel advice.

Yet as I drive through Abu Dhabi ’s Saadiyat Island, where 15 years ago desert and shrubs stood, and now shining soon-to-be skyscrapers, I find myself agreeing with Sex And The City’s Samantha: Abu Dhabi is the new Middle East.

The pace of change here means you can expect something new each year — super-luxe hotels and restaurants and high-tech entertainment attractions that make those in Europe look old hat.

Abu Dhabi — Dubai’s rich big sis — is the capital of the UAE and no amount of money has been spared on making sure we all know it.

Yet a holiday here isn’t just for the wealthy. Far from it.

Now that British Airways has relaunched direct flights from Heathrow after a four-year hiatus, bringing some well-priced competition to a market dominated by UAE airline Etihad , holidaymakers have greater choice when it comes to both cost and flight times.

In fact, holiday packages start from around £500pp in June with BA Holidays — and even at this price you will be treated like a king , with high-end service.

A camel ride topped my bucket list thanks to the exploits of my Abu Dhabi guru Samantha — played by Kim Cattrall — in Sex And The City 2. (Disclaimer: Most of the film was shot in Morocco).

Before reaching the camels, though, my Desert Rose group- safari tour began with a much less traditional sport — dune-bashing.

More thrilling than most roller coasters I have been on, the tyres of our 4X4 were deflated a little to give it more bounce as we thundered over mighty sand dunes with almighty force.

Speeding over their soft peaks, we crashed down the other side at such a steep angle that the roof and windows became submerged in sand and our group gripped on to headrests, handles and just about anything stable.

It was nail-biting stuff and, truth be told, I was rather grateful for the more mellow pace of our Bedouin camp when we reached it 20 or so minutes later.

At the foot of another huge dune, the desert refuge was a sight to behold — glowing in the amber light of a slowly sinking sun.

Here you can sample many age-old desert traditions, ranging from camel rides and henna painting to sand surfing and shisha smoking.

All of this is included in the price of a tour package — another great way to keep costs down.

You must scramble to the top of the dune before you surf it.

But I didn’t mind this so much when the reward was one of the most impressive sunsets I have ever seen, turning the epic sandscape red before it gradually became engulfed in darkness.

At the centre of our camp was a stage bordered by traditional rugs and low tables with cushions for seats.

Dinner was included too — a buffet of traditional, spice-laden curry dishes, creamy hummus and crispy falafels alongside some Western dishes such as tomato pasta, chips and green salads to keep younger tummies happy.

It seems the concept of dinner and a show is fully embraced in Abu Dhabi — and although the belly dancer and fire-eater who wiggled across the stage were not traditional to this part of the world, they are still entertaining.

But do bring a jacket, as the desert can get chilly once the sun sets, even in balmier seasons. I was grateful for the respite, though, after spending most of the day in 35C spring heat.

And I certainly welcomed the powerful air-conditioning that hit me as I strolled into the entrance of Warner Bros World on Yas Island the next day.

This was possibly the most pleasant theme park I have ever visited — and not just because the full- blown rollercoasters and thrill rides are crammed into one super air-con palace.

We queued no longer than five minutes for each ride and workers assured us that even at weekends it remains relatively quiet here.

Where should you head first?

Batman: Knight Flight was a big hit, propelling me into the city of Gotham in an alternate reality — as I was tasked with defeating The Joker, while TV screens with animated videos juddered in time with my seat.

After chowing down on burgers with Bugs Bunny, I got my culture fix on Saadiyat Island — home to the Louvre gallery, which has an agreement to share the name of the museum in Paris and borrow many of its artworks.

It is a real gem, allowing you to admire the works of masters such as Renoir, Picasso and Monet without lengthy queues.

This is also the place to head for five-star seafront luxury where restaurants offering any cuisine you can imagine spill out on to sun-drenched beaches, and luxury hotels abound.

On the mainland, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the prettiest place of worship I have ever seen, while the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental hotel is a landmark in its own right.

The resort is so vast that you will need a golf buggy to make your way around the immaculately kept gardens and golden fountains.

The sheer opulence, impeccable hotel service and not-too-shabby price tag made me question why I had never looked to Abu Dhabi as a holiday destination before.

All this plus the fact that the three-hour time difference for visitors from the UK means there is no jet lag.

Perhaps it had always been overshadowed by the glitz and glam of Dubai or maybe it was the lack of culture — I now know that is not true, after my visit to Saadiyat which in 2025 will also be home to a Natural History Museum and the Zayed National Museum.

I arrived back at the five-star Jumeirah on Saadiyat Island in time to catch the last hour of afternoon sun.

By this point it was streaming on to my balcony and through the glass doors so much that my bed was swimming in sunlight.

I flopped on to it, letting my head sink into a marshmallow-like stack of pillows.

Who needs the beach or pool when you can sunbathe from bed?

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates  – Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) have announced the launch of Abu Dhabi Stopover. The announcement was made at the Arabian Travel Market following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between DCT Abu Dhabi’s Director General for Tourism, His Excellency Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, and Etihad’s CEO Antonoaldo Neves.

The Abu Dhabi Stopover, exclusive to Etihad Airways, invites guests flying through Abu Dhabi to turn their free stopover hotel stay into the ultimate holiday. The capital of the UAE is an exciting and convenient stopover destination, thanks to its world-class hotels, stunning beaches, vibrant dining scene and full-throttle entertainment.

When booking flights with Etihad, guests now have the option to add a stopover and select a complimentary hotel as part of the online booking process. Guests can choose a free stay for one or two nights in a range of premier hotels across the city. Stopover packages are only available when booking direct on etihad.com.
