#238: In/At/On | Use Prepositions of Place Correctly

Apr 20, 2022 | Grammar , Prepositions

take a tour in or at

There is no question that the prepositions in English – including prepositions of place such as in, at, and on – are a constant source of frustration.

Not only are the grammar rules for prepositions in English different from the rules you might have in your language, which means you can’t directly translate how to use them, but also, the grammar rules we have for prepositions aren’t really rules at all.

Rather, we have patterns that can be difficult to remember and use accurately.

Today, my goal is to change that.

In this Confident English lesson today, you’ll learn 4 simple visual patterns so you can easily picture in your mind which preposition of place to use when you’re choosing between in, at, and on.

You’ll also have multiple examples with each preposition to underscore these visual rules with some pop quizzes along the way.

And finally, at the end, I have a tip on how you can easily remember what you learn and, as a result, avoid mistakes with prepositions going forward.

Visual Strategies to Accurately Use Prepositions of Place — In, At, On

Visual strategy #1: visualize a map.

When determining the correct preposition of place to use, visualize a map.

The more you need to zoom into a map, the more specific the location becomes.

We can use the same visual concept for determining the correct preposition of place to use in a sentence.

The rule of thumb is as follows:

The more general or least specific locations, such as countries, towns, and cities, use in :

  • Ex. “The office is located in Toronto.”

We use on for less specific locations such as, streets, islands, sides, etc.:

  • Ex. “The office is located on Bloor Street West”

While the most specific locations use at :

  • Ex. “The office is located at 303 Bloor Street West.”

Pro Tip: We can also use this rule when deciding whether to say ‘ arrive in ’, ‘ arrive at ’, or ‘ arrive on ’.

  • If you’ve come to a specific place, such as an airport, you might say, “We’ve arrived at the airport.”
  • If you’ve come to a general place, such as a country, you would choose to say, “We’ve arrived in France.”
  • If you’ve come to a particular side of something, you might say, “We’ve arrived on the left side of the parking lot.”

Visual Strategy #2: In Containers, Borders, or Limits

When we describe something within another thing, such as containers, borders, or limits, we use the preposition in .

Containers can range from pockets to boxes.

  • For example, you might tell your child, “Your colored pencils are in the basket on top of the books.”

In this example, the basket is the container holding the item. So, I can use in to clearly describe that the item is within the basket.

We can also use in to describe that something or someone is enclosed within the borders of an area.

  • For instance, you might reminisce about a road trip and tell a colleague, “We were driving in the northern region when we realized we were headed the wrong way.”

In this example Strategy #1 also applies since we are referring to being in a general, nonspecific area.

Moreover, we do the same when describing that something or someone is under water.

  • “We went swimming in the lake.”

Visual Strategy #3: On Surfaces, Public Transportation, and Devices

On is used for any surface, regardless of whether it’s vertical or horizontal.

  • For example, you might be at a museum and tell your friend, “Take a look at the painting on the blue wall; it’s breathtaking!”

Now, the same rule can be applied to apartments or suites that exist in a building.

When you want to specify the exact floor of someone’s residence, you could say “I think she lives on the fifth floor, in Apartment 402”.

In this case, the apartment is on the fifth floor of the building – a horizontal surface.

The preposition, on , can be a tricky one to pin down . Meaning, it can be difficult to identify when to use the word. We use on when referring to things that exist through devices or technology. This includes computers, smartphones, tablets, radios, televisions, the internet, and more.

  • For instance, When you hear your favorite song while listening to the radio, you might exclaim “I never thought I’d hear this old song on the radio again”.

Similarly, when someone recommends a documentary from the Internet, they could say “I saw a great documentary about climate change on Netflix; you should check it out”.

In this example, Netflix exists as an online form of television. So, the use of “ on TV ” is adapted to the streaming service.

We use on for public transportation, such as planes, buses, trains, etc.

  • For example, you might call into your workplace and tell a colleague, “I’ve been stuck on the train for half an hour and I think I’ll be late.”
  • If you somehow forgot that you left your file, you might say, “I accidentally left my file on the train”.

Now, I’m going to throw a curveball at you right now.

In other words, I’m going to present something difficult or unexpected. And perhaps you already know what it is.

You might be thinking, if we say “On a train, on a plane, on a bus, on a boat, and on a bike even, why do we use in a car? It’s a form of transport, right?

And that is true.

First, it’s important that we’re talking about patterns — things that are generally true, not strict rules.

Second, when we’re talking about on vs. in, I want you to think about how you feel. I know this seems odd, but stick with me.

How much freedom of movement do you have? How enclosed do you feel? Enclosed means surrounded on all sides?

A car limits our ability to move. We can’t stand up and move around in a car like we can on a boat, train, or bus.

Your daughter might be outside on her skateboard or on her bike. There is freedom of movement with those modes of transportation.

So, imagine you’re telling your husband where to look for his sunglasses. You might ask, “Have you checked in the car?”

When I say in the car, I mean inside the enclosure of the car. If I were to say on the car, then I’m indicating the surface of the car, like the roof.

If you’ve ever been on a cruise then you’ve spent a lot of time on the boat (where you had freedom of movement) and you slept in your cabin on the boat (where you were more enclosed).

Visual Strategy #4: At A Point, Place of Purpose, or Events

In Strategy #1, we discussed that at is used for specific locations, including streets, intersections, addresses, points, etc.

However, we can also use at to further pinpoint the exact spot in a location. To be specific, at is used to express location at a particular point: top, bottom, or end. This could be a street, a page, a hallway, and more.

  • For instance, if a book at a library is located towards the top of a bookshelf, the librarian could say, “You will find it at the end of the bottom shelf”.

If the librarian were to simply say, “ on the bottom shelf ” it may be difficult to find the exact location of the book.

Pro Tip : You may have noticed that in the example, I said “ at the library ”.

Whenever a place of purpose is mentioned, we use the preposition at . A place of purpose is any place or building that has been created specifically to perform an action. That includes schools, offices, gyms, libraries, airports, car washes, etc.

  • If you receive a text from your spouse, asking your whereabouts, you might text back, “I’m at the car wash. I’ll be home soon”.

Lastly, we use at for events, such as galas, charities, parties, concerts, weddings, and more.

  • For instance, your sister may come home from celebrating a marriage and tell you that, “Everyone at the wedding was impressed by the food; it was delicious”.

I’m so glad to hear that, Meena!

Gherghana

Thank you, Annemarie! Great lesson as usual! I’ll share it with my students because they do feel frustrated when they make mistakes with prepositions. And that example of memorizing phone numbers in the past … great! Thank you!

Antonio Lopez

Gherghana, I´m 67 years old, and until now I remeber all my documents numbers, the example of phone number is very real, today it´s non necessary rember because we have the numbers in our smartphones.

You’re so welcome, Gherghana! I’m glad this was useful!

Hans Zhuang

Hi Annemarie,

Thanks so much for sharing this.

I particularly like the way you explained why we use ‘in’ for cars. It helps me remember the rule when I know the reason or logic behind it.

The class is at the end of the hallway, on the left. (A point / side.)

Woohoo! Well done, Nasrin.

Wahid

Thank you Annemarie for the excellent lesson. It’s explained very clearly and helped me to understand better.

You’re very welcome.

Fouad

It was a very useful lesson. Thank you a lot

My pleasure!

Andreia

As you know this is a very confusing subject for me, and therefore I have a question for you. In the sentence “I think she lives on the fifth floor in Apartment 403”, why do you use “in Apartment” instead of “at Apartment”? I am asking this, because Apartment 403 seems to be very specific for me.

Thank you for this video. Andreia

Oh, good question, Andreia! Indeed, Apartment 403 is specific. But it isn’t an address. It’s not a street address (like at 1113 Olive Street, Apartment 403, San Francisco, CA).

Rather, it’s an enclosure. It’s within the boundaries of 4 walls. We would use the same thing if we said, “I live in the red house at the end of the street.”

I hope this helps. 😊

Want to walk beneath a massive battleship? Here’s how to take a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ tour.

  • Published: Mar. 31, 2024, 9:01 a.m.

  • Nyah Marshall | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

As the Battleship New Jersey sits in the dry dock at the Philadelphia Navy Yard for the next two months undergoing maintenance, the public will be able to tour underneath the iconic vessel for the first time in its long history.

Earlier this month, the battleship left its home port on the Camden waterfront after nearly 25 years of serving as a museum. It was towed away by tugboats to start a multi-month repair journey. The sendoff was attended by hundreds, including Gov. Phil Murphy and veterans who served on the ship.

The USS New Jersey arrived in Philadelphia Wednesday after a stop in Paulsboro for a ballasting project, which involved flooding its tanks with 500,000 gallons of water to balance the vessel in preparation for dry docking.

While at the Navy Yard, the battleship will be out of the water, offering viewers a rare chance to tour beneath its massive hull. Tours will run almost every Saturday and Sunday in April and May, starting April 6, according to battleship museum officials.

Dry dock tour tickets and can be purchased through the Battleship New Jersey museum’s website for $225. The tour is limited to people ages 16 or older. Veterans who served on the battleship can get discounted tickets for $170.

As of Thursday, over 1,700 tickets have been sold and the first tour date on April 6 is sold out.

The ship currently sits up on about 360 blocks, a few feet off the ground, officials said.

Guided tours will provide an opportunity to witness the ship and its propellers out of the water, and allow visitors to learn more about its history and significance, said Marshall Spevak, CEO of the Battleship New Jersey.

“You’re literally going to be able to walk underneath the ship, touch underneath of the ship, the hull and be able to walk around on the floor of the dry dock itself,” Spevak said.

Battleship U.S.S. New Jersey is moved from Paulsboro to Philadelphia Navy Yard for Maintenance

Visitors will also get a behind-the-scenes look at the ongoing restoration and repair work on the ship as it prepares to return to Camden.

Workers will repaint the ship’s hull, fix the anti-corrosion system underneath the ship and inspect the through-hull openings. The ship’s aluminum anodes, which are used to protect metal structures from corroding, will also be replaced.

Decommissioned museum ships must undergo dry docking for maintenance every 20 years, according to Navy regulations. However, it has been 33 years since Battleship New Jersey underwent maintenance, Spevak said.

Because the Philadelphia Navy Yard is an active outdoor worksite, visitors on tours are asked to dress appropriately, including wearing steel-toed shoes and sturdy pants. A commemorative branded hat and protective eyewear will be provided for free on the tour, officials said.

The Battleship New Jersey is known as the most decorated battleship in U.S. Navy history. It’s the fastest, longest Navy battleship and has served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon and the Persian Gulf wars.

The Philadelphia Navy Yard is the site where the battleship was originally constructed and launched in 1942, just a year after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Once the dry-docked repairs are complete, the ship will return home to Camden, where it will once again serve as a living museum and a memorial to those who served aboard the battleship.

Luke Combs at American Family Field: Everything to know for Milwaukee stadium tour kickoff

take a tour in or at

Last year, American Family Field hosted the first two shows for one of the biggest tours of the year, with Morgan Wallen.

Now it's doing it again.

This time out, it will be another one of country music's biggest stars, Luke Combs, who will kick off his 25-date blockbuster "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" 2024 stadium tour at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark, for the first two shows April 12 and 13.

Here's everything you need to know for two of the biggest concerts of the year in Milwaukee — including the status of the Brewers' new parking system.

More: These are all of the arena, amphitheater and stadium concerts in Milwaukee in 2024

When do the gates open for Luke Combs' American Family Field concerts, and when do they start?

The first opener for Combs' concerts April 12 and 13 will start at 5:45 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. each day. The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. April 12, and 2:30 p.m. April 13, and tailgating will be permitted. Just give yourself plenty of time to drive in, particularly on April 12, when there'll be Friday afternoon commuter traffic as well. Getting through security into the stadium will take some time, too, so plan accordingly.

How much is parking? Is the Brewers' new parking system in operation?

General parking is $25 in advance, or $40 for preferred parking, available at brewers.com/lukecombs . Day-of parking is $35 for general lots, or $50 for preferred lots, but the Brewers won't guarantee that parking will be available.

As for the new QR code-based payment system for parking , it's been temporarily suspended following connectivity issues on the Brewers' opening day . For the April 12-13 concerts, the Brewers will operate with the traditional on-site cashier system.

Here's how to get to the concerts if you don't want to drive

Two Milwaukee County Transit System  routes drop people off within walking distance of the ballpark: the CONNECT1 on Wisconsin Avenue and Route 18 on National Avenue. Find the schedule, fare information and more at ridemcts.com .

The taxi pickup and drop off is outside Helfaer Field, while drop-off and pick-up for Uber and Lyft is in the Gantner parking lot. (Expect huge crowds for rideshares after the show.)

Also: Some of the bars and restaurants that send shuttles to Brewers games might be giving rides as well. See the "American Family Field" section of brewers.com .

Are there any tickets available for Luke Combs' concerts at American Family Field? How much are they?

Remaining first-hand tickets for the April 12 show are $109.50 to $229.50, and $80.50 to $229.50 for April 13, available at brewers.com/lukecombs .

How can I access the pit and seats on the field?

Pit ticket holders must enter the third base gate only to get into the stadium to receive their wristband to get them access. Wristbands are also required for all seating on the field, sections A to P. They'll be available at the Associated Bank gate and wristband tables at the Left Field Guest Services Desk, the UScellular Power Playground in right field and at tables near Section 118.

Combs will have different openers each night — and a special tailgate pre-show April 13

Unlike Wallen — when he became the first artist to play two consecutive nights in a Wisconsin stadium — Combs will treat fans to different openers each night.

April 12 leans more into Combs' alt-country and traditional country tendencies with folk group the Wilder Blue up first, followed by singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin and then outlaw country artist Cody Jinks. The opener slate for April 13 leans a little more country pop, with (in order of appearance) Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. April 13 with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based up-and-comer concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at the Third Base Plaza at American Family Field, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase on site.

What is Luke Combs expected to play?

Since these are the first two shows of Combs' tour, we can't wager what the setlist will be. But considering the tour is named after his most recent albums, "Growin' Up" and "Gettin' Old," expect several songs from those. And Combs' biggest hits are also likely, including "Forever After All," "The Kind of Love We Make," and, of course, his breakout cover of the Tracy Chapman classic "Fast Car."

Where can I get more information?

Ticketholders will get more need-to-know information via email a few days before the shows, but more logistical information about American Family Field can be found at brewers.com/ballpark .

On a trip to Comfort Kitchen , your palate is your passport. Partners Biplaw Rai and Kwasi Kwaa say the restaurant’s global food concept extends beyond the plates. Their goal is to not only tantalate taste buds, but also track the history behind their ingredients and celebrate spices and culture from the African diaspora.

The pair, along with their wives Nyacko Pearl Perry and Rita Ferreira, opened the café by day, restaurant by night in Dorchester’s Upham’s Corner in January 2023.

In Boston’s Government Center, Irish culture is proudly on full display at The Dubliner . Head chef and partner Aidan McGee spent years working in critically acclaimed kitchens around the world before his wife’s job brought him to Boston.

Soon after McGee was situated in the city, his first pub visit was to The Kinsale. After The Kinsale closed in 2020, McGee and his partners – all Irish – bought the restaurant and revamped the interior and menu to make it feel more like home for its June 2022 opening.

Go On a Tour of One of the Greatest Sets in Star Trek History

Grab a jumja stick and let quark himself take you through one of the most important locations in star trek : deep space nine's promenade..

What’s the most important set on a Star Trek show? Depending on the series, it might differ—for the most part, it’s going to be the bridge of a starship . But “the bridge of a starship” isn’t really the answer to that question: it’s the place that feels most like home . And while it’s definitely not a starship, Deep Space Nine ’s promenade is exactly that, perhaps more than any other iconic locale in the franchise.

Today as part of a series of updates to its virtual tour offerings on the Apple Vision Pro, the Roddenberry Archive and OTOY announced a raft of new virtual reality set tours , taking fans inside the world of Star Trek . To celebrate this week’s return of Star Trek: Discovery , the bridge of the legendary vessel is now available for virtual visitation, as are the first virtual tours inside the fleets of the Klingon Empire —specifically the I.K.S. Amar , the K’t’inga battle cruiser from the opening of The Motion Picture . But perhaps the most fascinating addition is a further exploration of Deep Space Nine ’s titular station, and the most important place of all among its rings and pylons : the thoroughfare of the Promenade.

The Promenade was already part of the archive, but now audiences can explore further aspects of the set—one of the biggest ever built for Star Trek , the biggest outright at the time of filming—but the real highlight is a new, accompanying documentary about the design history of the set and its legacy, narrated by the perfect tour guide for such a locale: Armin Shimmerman, the man behind the lobes of the Promenade’s premiere businessman, Quark.

It’s a great little piece, looking at the set’s design process, how its scale was captured on screen, as well as Shimmerman relishing in giving little in-universe guides to everything that the Promenade had to offer. It’s a reminder of not just what an impressive set it was, but how its design language informed the very heart of what Deep Space Nine was doing with Star Trek . In the Promenade, we have a primary set that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the show before: this is not Federation design, or Starfleet ship corridors, but the brutalist angles of Cardassian aesthetic clashing with the pops of color from the flags hung by the Bajorans and other alien cultures steadily in the process of reclaiming what was once a grim shadow over the oppressions of Bajor. Few Star Trek sets are exactly comforting, but this heady mix of sharp angles and cool metallics against the vibrancy of shop lights and flags brings the Promenade a sense of homeliness that few other regular Trek sets could match.

But one thing this tour can’t capture about the Promenade that made it so compelling in the first place is the people milling about the place: the life that made it feel like home more than anything else. Sure, every Trek set has had some flavor of walk and talk on it before, the bustle of crew milling about and looking at monitors, but the Promenade was life itself made manifest. The culture clash of the design language was echoed in the people —so many people, more people than we would often see in one place on Trek outside of big crowd sequences or social hubs like canteens and bars. You had Starfleet crew, sticking out in their black and division-colored uniforms, you had the browns and beiges of Odo and his local security officers, you had Bajoran priests, you had civilians of all species and stripes, from visitors passing through to vendors hocking food and trinkets—and, of course, the myriad patrons of myriad scruples flocking in and out of Quark’s bar. The Promenade was defined by background vibrancy, a social and communal space that was far more important to Deep Space Nine than the cramped battle bridge of the Defiant , or the command crew’s home in operations.

That life made the Promenade sing—sometimes literally, in the case of the Klingon restaurateur playing his accordion and roaring traditional Klingon ballads at diners—and it made it the heart of Deep Space Nine , a sacred space for the viewer that the show could then violate at a moment’s notice to amplify any given threat. The Promenade has been home to firefights, assassination attempts, it’s been besieged , it’s been captured by our heroes’ worst enemies, but it’s also a place of love, adventure, and fun, the sight of some of the best moments in the entirety of DS9 . It is, after all, where the show’s heart is—and that is where home resides.

Politics | key bridge collapse live updates: ‘our first priority is to open the port,’ biden says, subscriber only, politics | president joe biden visits key bridge collapse site, takes aerial tour with gov. wes moore.

President Joe Biden on Friday took an aerial tour of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, met with families of the six men killed and was briefed on the massive cleanup and rebuilding efforts before doubling down on his promise to have the federal government pay for it all.

“From the air I saw a bridge that’s been ripped apart. Here on the ground, I see a community that’s been pulled together,” Biden said on the banks of the Patapsco River as the sun broke through the overcast sky to illuminate the crash site in the distance behind him.

Wearing a jacket and baseball cap in the whipping wind, Biden committed to moving “heaven and earth to rebuild this bridge as rapidly as humanly possible.” He reiterated his pledge for the federal government to pay for the entire response — a process that began last week with quick access to federal emergency relief funds and the drafting of legislation to cover the rest.

The Democratic president’s visit came a little over a week after a 984-foot shipping vessel hit the Key Bridge, sending it tumbling into the river and killing six construction workers who were filling potholes in the middle of the night. Biden said Friday he was grieving for the families of those men.

“It’s not the same but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul,” said Biden, whose wife and daughter were killed when he was a young senator, and whose son died of cancer in 2015. “You get that phone call in the middle of night saying family members are gone. I’ve been there. It’s feeling like having a black hole in your chest. Like you’re being sucked in unable to breathe. The anger, pain, the depth of loss is so profound.”

Before his remarks outside, Biden toured the site from Marine One with Gov. Wes Moore , who traveled on the president’s helicopter from the White House. The pair then received a briefing at the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Headquarters, where they heard directly about efforts to clear the channel and restore both shipping traffic in the Port of Baltimore and road transportation.

Biden listened quietly and asked a handful of questions before greeting first responders during the roughly 15-minute information session. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers leaders walked Biden through what’s been happening in the water, including work to clear an initial channel for some vessels by the end of April. Four large television screens depicted maps and images of the bridge site. Biden in one moment pointed to an image of the tangled underwater situation asking whether it was steel, though his other questions could not be heard by a small group of reporters in the room. Told of the unified state, local and federal efforts, the president at one point turned to Moore, directly to his left, and gave him an assuring tap on the shoulder. He went on to greet, one by one, law enforcement officers who stopped traffic on the bridge just moments before it collapsed.

Moore thanked Biden for his support, saying his first call from the White House was around 3 a.m. after the bridge fell around 1:30 a.m.

“President Biden might not be a Marylander by birth. But I tell you, he has proven what it means to be Maryland tough and Baltimore strong,” Moore said, referencing the mantra he’s used since the bridge collapse.

The Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday that it was pushing an “ ambitious timeline ” to return port access to “normal capacity” by the end of May. A channel 280 feet wide and 35 deep that would allow barge container service and some vessels to pass through could also be open by the end of April.

Meanwhile, the remains of three of the six men who were killed when the bridge came down remain in the water, and the 21 crew members onboard the Singapore-flagged Dali are still on board .

“We’ll never forget the contribution these men made to this city. We’re going to work hard to recover each of them,” Biden said of the victims, adding his “vow is to not rest” until the bridge is rebuilt.

A $60 million “down payment” from the federal government was  approved within days , allowing for vital cleanup work as cranes began arriving and removing the debris. Most of the additional emergency relief funds, in an account flush with nearly $1 billion, can be approved by Biden. Some will need congressional approval, though, and Democratic U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, of Baltimore, said he’d introduce legislation next week to cover that and other federal funding issues. With the far-right Freedom Caucus saying Friday it would force the Key Bridge funds to be contingent on other compromises, Mfume said the threat was intended to be obstructionist and that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has told him he “understands the weight and the depth” of the problem.

Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, in a letter to Congress on Friday, asked for them to ensure that the federal government pays for 100% of the costs. She said the administration would pursue “any compensation for damages or insurance proceeds” to reduce the burden on taxpayers.

“Your nation has your back and I mean it,” Biden said.

The financial impact will be immense. Total costs for a new bridge could run high into the hundreds of millions, and insurance claims expected to reach $1 billion or more could make the collapse the maritime industry’s largest-ever financial loss .

Other officials who joined the president in his Baltimore briefing Friday were U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, Mfume, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski Jr. and Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. All are Democrats and have taken steps within local or federal government to advance the relief efforts for the victims families, businesses that relied on the bridge and port, and plan for rebuilding.

Biden spoke of his own personal connections to the bridge and to Baltimore, where his father was born and his great great grandfather worked as a waterman. Of the roughly 30,000 vehicles that traveled across it every day, he was one of them, commuting from Delaware to Washington, D.C., when he was a senator.

“Folks, we now face a question no American should ever have to ask: ‘How will I get to work? How will I get to school? How will I get to the hospital?’” Biden said. “The response of everyone, including Congress, should be asking only one question, and they’re going to be asked a question by your delegation, ‘How can we help?’”

When do you use take sb to and take sb for/on it is a pleasure to take you to a sightseeing tour of my city--> wrong. it is a pleasure to take you for/on a sightseeing tour of my city--> right. Why?

Masood

Hi They are both correct, but have different meanings.

gringuitoloco

I'm going to take you for a ride---means you will drive someone around, like in a car. I'm going to take you to a ride--means you will bring someone to some type of amusement ride, like a ferris wheel. In your example, using "to" means bringing to a LOCATION that does sightseeing tours. Using "for" means bringing on an actual sightseeing tour. Also, It is a pleasure sounds weird...It seems as though you should say "It was a pleasure."

you re right, i wanted to say "it was a pleasure". So, to sum up, take sb to is for a place, whereas take sb for is to do an activity. am I right?

Mihael00 said: you re right, i wanted to say "it was a pleasure". So, to sum up, take sb to is for a place, whereas take sb for is to do an activity. am I right? Click to expand...

It depends on the intrinsic meaning of the preposition: to + destination for = objective on = physical position (means of transport, on board a; tour bus, plane, train etc.) "It is a pleasure" is fine if you wish to pay a compliment while on the tour

Along with taking in temples and cherry blossoms, Tokyo visitors can now join a curated pilgrimage of the city’s more modern wonders: its public toilets.

Penelope Panczuk was inspired to hop on the Tokyo Toilet Shuttle for a two-hour tour of artistically enhanced public conveniences by “Perfect Days”, the Oscar-nominated film about a toilet cleaner in the city’s Shibuya district.

“In the U.S. or in France where I originally come from, you just don’t go,” Panczuk said of using public facilities.

“Here in Tokyo you’re really happy to go because they’re extremely clean, they’re very safe and each one is so different it feels like it’s a new discovery each time,” she added.

The shuttle began in March with visitors flocking to Japan at a record pace , drawn by a slide in the yen that’s made it affordable for many superfans of Japanese culture to take in its sights and quirks for the first time.

Among Japan’s most-revered technological exports in recent years are its toilets — manufactured by TOTO  (5332.T), opens new tab , LIXIL  (5938.T), opens new tab  and others — that feature cleansing sprays, heated seats, music, and other functions.

The animated comedy “South Park” recently devoted an entire episode to them, and hip-hop impresario DJ Khaled gushed on Instagram about a gift of four TOTO bowls from the rapper Drake.

The Tokyo Toilet Project, started in 2020 by The Nippon Foundation non-profit, recruited creators including Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando to improve accessibility and artistry in 17 public toilets in the Shibuya district.

The project wasn’t intended as a tourist attraction, but Shibuya’s government saw a chance to broaden the area’s visitor appeal away from its famously chaotic Scramble crossing.

“The highlight for visitors is that they can be driven around the less-visited parts of Shibuya and enjoy the entire district while checking out the toilets,” said Yumiko Nishi, a tourist association manager for the ward.

Shuttle passengers pay 4,950 yen ($32.76) to visit nine distinct toilets, including one with clear walls that turn opaque when users enter and another operated by voice commands.

Takao Karino, visiting from Japan’s western metropolis of Osaka, marvelled at the wide, vaulted entranceway of a facility created by British designer Miles Pennington.

“There’s nothing else like this in Japan,” Karino, 69, said about the tour. “It’s unusual, it’s unique, it’s honestly brilliant.”
