Tata Motors recently unveiled the Safari facelift in India, alongside the Harrier, ahead of its price reveal on October 17. This marks the first time that Tata Motors has given the SUV a proper facelift, since its launch in 2021. While the brand has made some notable changes to the SUV’s design both inside and outside, it is equipped with the same engine and transmission as its predecessor. So here we look at everything that is different in the Tata Safari facelift, compared to its predecessor.

The new Safari's fascia gets plenty of new bits, including a new grille and DRLs, now linked by a lightbar.

Borrowing styling cues from the Harrier EV concept showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, the new Safari’s design is a clear evolution of its predecessor. The fascia now features a larger, mesh-patterned grille with a different finish, new vertically stacked LED projector headlights and new DRLs, now linked by a lightbar.

The Safari facelift's rear taillamps are also interconnected by a lightbar

From the rear, the taillamps now form a C-shaped pattern and are connected by a lightbar, unlike the previous model, which featured two separate LED units. Other changes include new alloy wheels that range from 17- to 19-inches, depending on the variant, along with a redesigned skid plate. The Safari facelift is available in a total of seven exterior colours.

Interior

The Safari facelift gets a new freestanding 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 10.2-inch full-digital driver’s display

On the inside, the Safari facelift’s layout is more or less the same as its predecessor, however, Tata has changed certain aspects of the dashboard to give it a more refreshed appearance. A new freestanding 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display replaces the unit on the older SUV. It also gets an all-new 10.2-inch full-digital driver’s display. An important addition to its list of features is that it now gets a seventh-knee airbag. Other changes include a new four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo along with capacitive touch controls for the climate control system.

The SUV’s equipment list includes- dual-zone auto climate control, powered and ventilated front seats, 360-degree cameras, front parking sensors, a 45W USB-C charger, wireless charger, air purifier, voice-activated panoramic sunroof with mood lighting, 10-speaker JBL sound system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Alexa integration, gesture-controlled tailgate opening function and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on the top-spec ‘Fearless’ and ‘Accomplished’ variants, respectively.

New Variant Names

tata safari old vs new

The Safari facelift is available in four variants- Smart, Pure, Adventure and Accomplished

While the older Tata Safari had six trims on offer- XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ and XZ+, the new one is available in four variants, or personas as Tata Motors likes to call them. These include the Smart, Pure, Adventure and Accomplished. What hasn’t changed, however, is the powertrain, as the Safari is still equipped with the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, which puts out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic (with steering-mounted paddle shifters), and drive modes include Eco, City and Sport. Terrain modes – now accessed via a new rotary knob on the centre console – include Normal, Rough and Wet modes.

Tata Safari facelift: Old vs New

Tata Motors recently unveiled the Safari facelift, bringing in a fresh design, revamped interior, and a range of additional features. The carmaker has commenced bookings for the flagship SUV for a token amount of Rs 25,000, with deliveries scheduled to start later this month. Tata is updating variant names for its vehicles, making them simpler and that started with the Punch, followed by the updated Nexon and Nexon EV. The Safari and Harrier facelifts also benefit from new variant names. That said, the refreshed Safari is available in four trim levels: Smart, Pure, Adventure and Accomplished.

Tata Safari Facelift: Design

In comparison to the pre-facelift Safari, the refreshed version has a completely new fascia comprising a fresh grille, an LED light bar running across its width that also doubles up as indicators, bi-projector LED headlamps with cornering lights, and a new front bumper.

The side profile of the old and new Safari is almost identical but there is a new set of alloy wheels. At the back, the Safari facelift features redesigned C-shaped taillamps with a full-length light stripe, a vertical light setup similar to the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and a new rear bumper.

While the Safari facelift carries the same silhouette of the outgoing Safari, it is modern and more muscular. The refreshed Safari stands out with its fresh fascia and reworked rear section. In terms of colours: Tata offers the Safari facelift with new and vivid paint options, such as Cosmic Gold, Galactic Sapphire, Stardust Ash, Stellar Frost, Oberon Black, Supernova Copper and Lunar Slate.

Tata Safari – Old vs new comparison

2023 tata safari – what’s new here’s a look at the new safari compared to the older tata safari..

tata safari old vs new

The ‘Safari’ name carries significant importance to Tata Motors and has been in existence for many years. The original Tata Safari was launched back in 1998 and over the years, it saw many iterations, including the Safari Storme that was popular amongst enthusiasts. However, Tata killed the product and in 2021, Tata gave the Safari a radical makeover, rather re-launched the Safari brand with the current model and now, the carmaker has given the SUV its first major facelift.

The 2023 Tata Safari gets significant updates in terms of styling and equipment compared to the older version and here is a detailed look at the 2023 Tata Safari compared to the pre-facelift model.

Tata Safari

The design team at Tata Motors has been busy and they have done an impressive job in the way the new Tata vehicles look — from the facelifted Nexon to the Safari. The older vehicle had big headlights that added to the the Safari’s buch looks, however, with the update, the SUV looks more premium.

The 2023 Tata Safari gets a redesigned front end with new DRLs that run across the breadth of the SUV, along with new vertically-stacked headlights and a new grille. Towards the rear, the design language is carried on, and the tail lamps are also connected. Overall, the 2023 Safari looks sporty, and the design updates have come together well.

tata safari old vs new

The interior has also seen an overhaul with a lot of design elements carried on from the Tata Curvv concept. The 2023 Safari gets a steering wheel with an illuminated logo, replacing the old steering wheel. The dash has also been redesigned, along with the central air vents that blend into the design well.

The new Tata Safari gets touch controls replacing the physical buttons and gets soft-touch materials on the dash along with colour inserts. The infotainment system is a 12.3-inch unit compared to the 10.25-inch unit in the older vehicle and the instrument console is a fully-digital unit that is customisable.

tata safari old vs new

On the features and safety front, the 2023 Tata Safari gets ventilated front and second-row seats, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, and more, while getting 7 airbags and ADAS. On the whole, the 2023 Tata Safari is a well-equipped vehicle.

Engine specifications

Tata Motors has left the engine unchanged and powering the 2023 Tata Safari is a 2.-litre diesel engine that makes 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox driving the front wheels. However, an update with the drivetrain is the inclusion of paddle shifters with the 2023 Safari that the older model missed out on.

New Tata Safari vs old Safari: Differences explained

The new tata safari was revealed yesterday and will go on sale in india next month. but can the new safari, which is a seven-seater harrier at heart, carry forward old safari storme's legacy let's find out..

New Tata Safari vs old Safari: Differences explained

Key Highlights

  • 2021 Tata Safari is more spacious than Safari Storme
  • 2021 Tata Safari has more power on tap than the predecessor
  • The new Safari is much more luxurious than Safari Storme

Tata Motors discontinued Safari Storme last year as the BS6 emission norms came into effect in April. However, little did anyone know that the company was planning to revive the brand, albeit in an all-new avatar. The Indian carmaker revealed the all-new Safari yesterday and the SUV will be launched in India next month. Now, the new Safari is essentially a seven-seater Harrier and this is something the enthusiasts are finding hard to swallow. This is because the previous Safari christened Safari Storme became famous for its rugged personality and offroading capabilities. This is one of the reasons why the Indian army decided to have Tata customize the Storme as their patrolling vehicle. But according to Tata, the new Safari is not only as capable as the predecessor but is also more luxurious and comfortable. Now, this is something we can ascertain only once we have driven the new Safari. But till then, let's try to find out how different is the new Tafa Safari as compared to Safari Storme.

New Safari side.jpg

New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Dimensions

The new Safari is 4,658 mm long, 1,894 mm wide, 1,786 mm tall, and has a 2,741 mm-long wheelbase. The Safari Storme, in comparison to this, was 4,655 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,922 mm tall, and had a 2,650 mm-long wheelbase.

So, these figures tell us that the new Safari is longer, wider, and probably more spacious as compared to the previous model. However, the Storme was significantly taller than the new Safari and was built on a ladder on frame chassis as opposed to the new model's monocoque frame.

New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Features

Safari Storme int.jpg

One of the biggest gripes with the Safari Storme was that is was poorly appointed. The Storme had a rather simple interior layout and had provisions like an integrated music system, AC, analogue instrument panel with a small digital display, and manual AC. The new Safari, however, is significantly more feature-rich; it gets provisions like an 8.8-inch touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT display for the instrument panel, automatic AC, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, push-button start/stop, ambient lighting, cruise control, panoramic sunroof, iRA connectivity suite, etc.

NEw Safari int.jpg

New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Safety features

The new Tata Safari gets significantly more safety features as compared to Storme. The new model gets safety features like six airbags, cruise control, electronic stability program, hill-hold control, hill-descent control, corner stability control, and electronic traction control on the top-end trim.

New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Seating layout

The old Safari Storme was available as a seven-seater SUV where the last row had side-facing jump seats. The new model, however, is available as a six-seater with captain seats for the middle row or a seven-seater vehicle with front-facing third-row seats.

New Tata Safari Captain Seats

New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: Specs

This is another area where the two SUVs are significantly different. The Storme was powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that generated 154 bhp with 400 Nm while the new Safari uses a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine that puts out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. So, this means that the new SUV has more horsepower up its sleeve but less torque as compared to the previous model. But it is also worth noting that Storme weighed almost 2,000 kg (kerb weight) while the new Safari tips the scale at 1,825 kg (kerb).

Another important thing to note is that the new Safari gets the option of an automatic gearbox while the Storme was available with manual transmission only.

Safari Storme rear.jpg

New Tata Safari vs Safari Storme: 4X4 drivetrain

This is one aspect which has been bothering most of the enthusiasts. Unlike the Storme, the new Safari doesn't get a 4X4 drivetrain option as yet. But Tata, in its defence, believes that there is a scanty demand for 4X4 drivetrain in India, which is why the carmaker hasn't offered it on the new model. However, the new Safari does get multiple driving modes.

Upcoming All-New Tata Safari vs Old Model - What Has Changed: Design, Features and More

Last Updated: January 28, 2021, 10:25 IST

In its current avatar, Tata has equipped enough firepower in the Safari to make the argument fool-proof, or has it? Hence here is how the last iteration goes up against the new one on paper.

Tata has finally dropped the wraps on the upcoming Safari SUV. The Safari badge is largely responsible for establishing the SUV culture in India back in the time when it was introduced. And in its current avatar, Tata has equipped for firepower to make the argument fool-proof, or has it? Hence here is how the last iteration of Safari goes up against the new one on paper.

Monocoque Over Body on Frame

The previous Safari was based on an X2 body-on-frame platform that also underpinned models including Aria and Hexa. While the chassis proved to be potent off the tarmac, its highway manners were somewhat satisfactory to say the least. This has been fixed in the new model that comes with Land Rover’s D8-derived monocoque platform. The handling is expected to be more tied down, just like the Harrier, which it is based on.

More Powerful Engine

The new Safari utilises an FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine that outputs 170PS and 350Nm of torque. While it’s more powerful than the older Safari’s 156PS 2.2-litre diesel engine, the new one falls short in terms of torque. The base variants of the Safari Storme came with a lower-spec 140PS/320Nm 2.2-litre diesel engine.

In terms of transmission options, the Safari will come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which will be sold alongside the 6-speed manual variant. It also utilises a completely different drivetrain as the new one spins its front wheels rather than the rear.

Also Watch:

Rear-Wheel-Driver over All-Wheel-Drive

The older Safari had grounded popularity for its off-roading prowess. It came with an optional four-wheel drivetrain. It also fared pretty well off the beaten path if driven by sensible hands. However, the new one, which will initially come with a front-wheel drivetrain, will be more suitable for mild off-roading.

However, it should also be noted that the new iteration comes with ESP-based off-road modes to play with. Tata could introduce an all-wheel-drive variant if demand persists as the platform is capable of taking up an AWD system.

Tata Safari old vs new

Tata Motors has shaken things up in the full-size SUV segment with the launch of the new Safari facelift. This new model features a massive design and feature update on both the outside and the inside. The company, along with the new standard facelifted model, has also launched the Dark Edition of the Safari facelift as well. Recently, a video comparing both the new and the old Safari Dark Editions has been shared online.

Safari Dark Edition: New Facelift vs. Old

The video comparing the Safari facelift Dark Edition vs. the old Safari Dark Edition has been shared on YouTube by Kataria Garage on the channel. The video starts with the presenter comparing the front of both the Dark Edition models. He mentions that the all-new facelift model looks a lot more modern, futuristic, and bold. However, the old model still does not look dated and offers a much more muscular and aggressive appearance. In this Dark Edition, the new facelifted Safari gets high-gloss finishes all around.

Moving on, the vlogger highlights the differences between the two models. He mentions that the Safari facelift gets a set of new LED headlights and fog lights, and the entire assembly of these lights is compact. Meanwhile, the halogen projector and halogen fog lights setup on the old Safari were a lot bigger. Another major change is the addition of a full-width LED DRL on the new Safari facelift. He mentions that the old one comes equipped with two separate but bigger LED DRLs.

Next, the presenter moves to the side profile comparison of the two SUVs. The brand-new Safari facelift in the Dark Edition model gets a completely different and more aggressive set of alloy wheels. The size of the old Safari Dark Edition was 18 inches, while the new Safari facelift Dark Edition offers a bigger 19-inch alloy wheel set. Another small difference between the two models is the addition of Safari badging. The new facelifted model gets Safari badging on the front two doors.

After the front and side profile changes, the vlogger shows the rear end of both Dark Edition models. He mentions that overall they look the same, but the new facelift model gets newly designed LED taillights which are now connected. The rear bumper on the new facelift model has also been fully redesigned, adds the vlogger.

Next, he moves to the interior of the two cars, where he first shows the old Dark Edition’s interior. He mentions that it looks a little dated on the inside but still gets a decent amount of features. After this, he shows the interior of the new Safari facelift. He states that the new interior is a lot more modern than the old one. It gets a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system by Harman and a 10.25-inch digital instrument gauge cluster. The new car also gets touch-based HVAC controls and a ton of other new features.

CarToq’s Review of the 2023 Tata Safari

Shantonil Nag drove the updated Tata Safari for CarToq soon after its official reveal, and was impressed with the updates. The car has become much better, and the exterior is visually striking (not that the last Safari was boring!). But the updated Safari is much more well-placed to offer a strong challenge to its competition. You can read our full review of the 2023 Tata Safari here.

Tata Safari Old vs New: Prices

Tata Motors has recently updated its flagship SUV models; Tata Harrier and Tata Safari facelift. Both SUVs have received major changes which include an updated design along with more features on the inside.

The price for the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari facelift has also been revealed today. The starting price of the new Harrier is set at Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom) while the Safari facelift is priced at Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom). Both prices are introductory.

Since both SUVs have received a major facelift, it was expected the models would come with a significant price hike compared to the outgoing models. To our surprise, the new Tata Safari facelift shares similar pricing to the old Safari with just a marginal increase despite the added tech.

Let's compare the prices for Tata Safari facelift with its outgoing model.

Tata Safari Facelift vs Old: Price Comparison

New Safari facelift

Despite these upgrades, Tata Motors maintained competitive pricing, positioning the facelifted Safari as an attractive choice within its segment, especially when compared to the older model.

With an optimal balance of updated features, the facelifted Tata Safari is priced between Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Smart variant. Its top-spec variant, Accomplished+ is priced at Rs 25.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

In comparison to the old pricing, the pricing of the new Safari did not make much difference. The outgoing model retails at Rs 15.84 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant while its top-spec variant comes with a price tag of Rs 25.21 lakh (ex-showroom).

However, the 2023 Tata Safari is worth the price as it comes equipped with lots of unique changes to the exterior design, tech-loaded features, powerful performance, and attractive colour choices.

Tata Safari Facelift vs Old: ADAS and Safety Features

Old Safari

Apart from this, Tata Motors has offered Level-2 ADAS tech which will offer 11 assistive features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, and more.

Safety has also been ensured. Features like a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, ABS with EBD, ESP, Hill Descent Control, and Drive Attention Alert are also provided in the new Safari and Harrier facelift.

Excluding these changes, the 2024 Tata Safari also comes with more features on the inside that includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen system along with another 10.25-inch digital drivers display. Other notable elements include dual-zone AC, mood lighting, captain seats with ventilation and a large panoramic sunroof among others.

Mahindra XUV700 vs Tata Safari comparison

The Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari have been among the newsmakers of 2021. We bring the two flagship SUVs together for one big fight.

Mahindra XUV700 vs Tata Safari comparison

With all seats up, both SUVs offer very limited luggage space.

tata safari old vs new

The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 are easily two of the most talked about new SUVs in India at the moment. Being the flagship models of India’s very own automotive brands, there’s a nationwide interest in knowing what they’re like, but there’s more to the mania. Big in size, tough in build, and versatile with three rows of seating, the Safari and XUV700 fit the image Indian buyers have of ‘proper’ SUVs, an image, perhaps, subconsciously cemented by none other than the original home-grown heroes, the Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio from two decades ago. Sure, the new Safari and XUV700 are far removed in their monocoque construction and front-wheel-drive layouts, but the fundamental SUV-ness is very much there.

tata safari old vs new

Of course, a lot of the chatter around these two is centred around which one’s better. And that’s where we come in. We’ll be blocking out the noise to give you an objective analysis of these cut-throat rivals. As ever, we’ll judge the contenders on a wide variety of parameters to pick one definitive winner.

Standing tall

Measuring over 4.6m long, the XUV700 and Safari are a full size larger than the crop of midsize SUVs better known as the ‘Creta class’. A spec check will reveal that there’s mere millimetres between the XUV and Safari in length, width and height, but you sure won’t confuse one for the other.

tata safari old vs new

To my eyes, the XUV700 is handsome in its basic design, but styling is overdone at places. The headlights with their comma-like LED DRL extensions, for instance, are distinctive but too jazzy. Simpler looking tail-lamps too would have done the job just as well. But to a typical buyer, the XUV does wow with its upmarket looks and details like the flush-fitting door handles that, on fully loaded versions, automatically pop out on unlocking.

tata safari old vs new

Parked alongside an XUV700, the Safari comes across as more outdoorsy in look. And while no larger than the Mahindra, it’s the Tata which comes across as more rugged. The chunky wheel arches and high bonnet sure help with this impression. And while that split headlamp set-up is shared with the 5-seat Harrier, the Safari’s stepped roof, roof rails and upright tail (inspired by the original Safari) really help it stand out.

tata safari old vs new

Cabin pressure

Getting into a Tata Safari requires a bit of a step up, but once inside, you’ll like what you see. The dashboard with that thick metal-look band running its width is stylish, and the soft touch material on the dash top, among other elements, also conveys quality. Drivers will also like their commanding view out and the feeling of being in something big and tough. But as nice as the Safari’s interior is, the XUV’s is in a different plane.

tata safari old vs new

It starts with the welcome gesture (on AX7 Luxury variants) that has the driver’s seat slide back for easier ingress and egress, which is something you’d typically get in a car of twice the price. The XUV’s front seats themselves are more accommodating than the ones in the Safari (there’s too much side bolstering), and then there’s the general look and feel of things. Material quality, for one, is a step up, with the Mahindra being more generous in its use of padded materials on the dash and doors, while smaller details like gloss plastics for the door window switches only enhance the premium experience inside. That said, the piano black surfaces aren’t well finished and look a bit tacky. Of course, the major talking point inside the XUV700 are the dual 10.25-inch displays for the dials and infotainment unit system. The high-res and vibrant screens give the XUV’s cabin a very tech-heavy vibe. In comparison, the Tata’s part-digital dials and fuzzy 8.8-inch touchscreen arrangement looks outdated.

And that’s the thing. Mahindra’s gone to such lengths to load the XUV700 that it makes the otherwise well-equipped Safari come across as relatively basic. In addition to all that’s been mentioned already, features exclusive to the XUV700 (pictured here in the range-topping AX7 Luxury Pack guise) include a 360-degree camera (it’s crisp, but a bit laggy), blind view monitor (it appears on the dials on activating an indicator) and dual-zone climate control. The XUV700 also has the edge with a slightly larger panoramic sunroof. Curiously, though, an auto dimming rear view mirror is not available on any version of the XUV. Of the other things, wireless phone charging and wireless Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay are features you’d find on both, though it’s worth highlighting that these are recent additions on the Tata. Safaris in limited-run Gold Edition form also get ventilation for the front seats (and rear seats on 6-seat versions) and it’s expected that these features will be rolled out onto the standard range in the days to come. Both SUVs get good sound systems.

tata safari old vs new

The XUV’s 12-speaker Sony 3D set-up does offer more fine-tuning and variation while the Safari’s nine-speaker JBL system is richer in bass.

In terms of safety equipment, both models get ABS and electronic stability control, though the XUV has the upper hand with seven airbags (including one for the driver’s knee) to the Safari’s count of six airbags. That the XUV’s curtain airbags extend all the way to the third row is reassuring to know too. While both models comply with latest Indian safety norms, only the XUV700 has a Global NCAP rating too – 5 stars on adult occupant protection and 4 stars on child safety. Where the XUV700 blows the Safari away is in the Active Safety department.

tata safari old vs new

The XUV has the huge distinction of being the only one with camera and radar-based ADAS or advanced driver assistance systems. Over the few days of testing, we found features like adaptive cruise control, traffic assist (that automatically accelerates and brakes in stop-go traffic) and auto high beam assist (it switches to low beam on detecting oncoming vehicles) calibrated well for average Indian conditions. Thankfully, the forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking didn’t come into play at any point. However, the lane keep assist that steers the vehicle to the centre of a lane was often thrown off by our poorly marked roads and was the one ADAS feature we kept off.

tata safari old vs new

Comfort plus

Before we talk second- and third-row comfort, it’s essential to bring in the different seat arrangements these SUVs can be had with.

Lower trims of the XUV700 are offered in a 5-seat format, with a bench in the middle row. Higher-spec 7-seat versions add in a pair of seats as the third row. The Tata Safari, on the other hand, gets a third row as standard, but you can opt for a pair of captain’s chairs or a 3-seat bench for the middle row.

tata safari old vs new

The XUV700’s middle-row bench scores well on comfort. Space is aplenty, the seat is well cushioned, there’s a good amount of support and the 60:40 split seats offer plenty of recline too. The flat floor makes life better for a middle-seat passenger too, and it only helps that the XUV also has the slight advantage in shoulder room. Also, boss mode lends the option to move the front passenger seat forward at the pull of a lever, to free up additional legroom for the middle row.

tata safari old vs new

You do get more flexibility in a Safari. Boss mode aside, there’s the option to move the middle row seats fore and aft to balance legroom for the last row of passengers, and bench seat-equipped versions also feature ample recline. Were we speccing our Safari, we’d opt for the 7-seat configuration with the bench middle row. The 6-seater might be designed for the chauffeur-driven, but its captain’s chairs aren’t as large or comfy as they should have been. Irrespective of the version you opt for though, you’ll appreciate the stadium seating and the great view out the Safari gets you. We also found the Safari’s air-con vents, which sit on the B-pillar, more effective at channelling cool air than the XUV’s second-row vents that are positioned lower down at the rear centre console. Just wish Tata could also find a better position for the rear USB slots that are positioned low and out of sight.

Back to back

Reaching the third row is tricky business in both SUVs, with access via the rear door. The 7-seat versions of both models get slick single touch tumble and fold mechanisms for the kerb side middle row seats. Sadly, the resulting openings on both models aren’t all that large and adults, especially, will have to contort their way in. Access to the back is (slightly) more convenient on 6-seat Safaris, thanks to the option of walking in via the narrow passage between the middle-row captain’s chairs.

tata safari old vs new

At the very back, you or your passengers will be happier in the Safari. It’s not perfect, but the Tata has the comfier seating position, offers that crucial bit more headroom and kneeroom, and the option to slide the middle-row seats also means you can free up space for a large adult, if just for a short stint. The high-set air-con vents also count for a lot and Tata has thoughtfully added in two USB charging sockets at the very back too.

The XUV’s third-row experience isn’t quite as nice. The knees-up seating position, limited headroom and foot space relegate the seats for occasional usage only. The XUV gets third-row air-con vents and blower controls like the Safari but there’s only a 12V socket to juice up your phone with.

tata safari old vs new

With all seats up, the XUV offers just about enough space to store a few soft bags behind the rearmost seats. In the Safari, there’s even lesser room. Both models do give the option to fold the split third-row seats flat, and this frees up a lot of space. Again, it’s the XUV that offers more room for luggage, thanks to its wider bed.

When it is time to load luggage, you’ll note it’s the Safari’s heavy metal tail gate that requires quite a bit of effort to open. The XUV’s plastic composite tail gate is lighter and more convenient to open/close. But how easy will it be to repair in the event of a rear collision?

Powering up

The Tata Safari’s engine and gearbox line-up is pretty straightforward. There’s a sole 2.0-litre diesel engine that can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed auto transmission. The XUV’s powertrain matrix is a lot more complex. There’s the choice of a 2.0 petrol engine, with manual and auto gearbox options; there’s also a 2.2 diesel in two states of tune, with the higher powered version further offered with manual and automatic gearboxes; and you can even have the diesel- auto with all-wheel drive. Phew! For this comparo, we’ve taken the popular diesel-auto versions of both, with the test XUV in Safari-like front-wheel-drive avatar.

You’ll like how the Safari delivers its power. The Fiat-sourced 170hp and 350Nm, 2.0 diesel engine actually feels stronger than the numbers suggest, and there’s enough pulling power even when travelling with a full house. Sport mode adds a spring in the Safari’s step and what’s nice is that the Hyundai-sourced 6-speed gearbox is well in tune with the characteristics of the engine. Gearshifts are smooth and timely, though there is a bit of a delay at the gearbox when you suddenly mash down on the accelerator. Manual inputs at the gear lever are well catered to, however. What isn’t all that nice is the engine’s refinement. It’s audible at idle and sounds grumbly when building speed.

Where the Safari’s powertrain is good, the XUV700’s is great and quite frankly in a different league. The Mahindra’s 2.2 diesel engine not only has the displacement advantage, but its 185hp and 450Nm make it a whole lot more powerful too. And you can feel the added power. The XUV feels light on its feet and peppy, in a way you just wouldn’t expect an SUV in this category to be. The impression is backed by the performance numbers. The XUV is significantly quicker in kickdown acceleration (see table) and, if only for theoretical interest, is faster from a standstill to 100kph too (with a time of 10.1sec to the Safari’s 12sec best figure).

Standard Zip mode is more than adequate for most scenarios, though you’ll find yourself switching to Zap and Zoom driving modes that give access to all of the engine’s power. The 6-speed auto also goes about its business with great smoothness and you’ll like how on the ball it is, ready with a quick gearshift in Zoom mode.

Even manual gearshifts via the gear lever are slick. The XUV’s diesel unit does sound gravelly when you’re starting out, but engine refinement on the whole is much better than the Safari’s. Also if it’s ultimate refinement you desire, you’d, perhaps, be better served by the XUV700 petrol.

Twist and turn

It’s in the area of ride and handling that the XUV truly distances itself from the Safari. For starters, the XUV’s electric power steering is really well judged. It’s light and easy to twirl at low speeds (helping the XUV feel smaller than it is) and weighs up adequately and remains linear when you go faster. The drive modes add more weight, but the difference in feel is limited at best. It’s not intended to be a corner carver, but you’ll be more than satisfied by the poise with which the XUV changes direction.

An all-independent suspension with sophisticated frequency selective dampers have been employed on the Mahindra and have resulted in a very un-Mahindra dynamic experience, especially if the old XUV500 is your point of reference. The XUV700 also does a great job of smoothening out surface imperfections, particularly at low speeds.

In the same city settings, you’ll find the Safari’s low-speed ride a bit jittery, the steering feels heavy at parking speeds and there’s a general awareness that you’re piloting something large. The Safari experience gets better as you pick up the pace. There’s a confident heft with which the Tata cruises, and you’ll particularly appreciate how unfazed it feels over broken patches of road taken at high speeds. However, the Tata’s hydraulic steering is the weak link in the experience. There’s kickback on bad roads, torque steer under hard acceleration and an inconsistency that takes away some confidence at high speeds.

It’s when the going gets tough that the Safari feels its best. On mild trails, you’ll find yourself taking more liberties in the Tata that feels built to take a beating. The Tata is built on a Land Rover-derived platform and that inherent toughness comes through. Dedicated terrain modes are also part of the package on the Tata. The XUV isn’t a softie, either. It’s tough in its own right and will do all that the Safari can, but you’ll find yourself going easier in the Mahindra. The XUV does have the critical advantage with optional all-wheel drive, though.

Both models feature front and rear disc brakes but both have their quirks in panic braking scenarios. Where the Safari’s pedal feels mushy, the XUV exhibits considerable dive in hard stops.

Question of the hour

So now that you know what they’re like, time to bring in prices. The Mahindra XUV700 diesel-auto in AX7 Luxury trim has a price tag of Rs 20.89 lakh, while the Tata Safari XZA+ is on sale for Rs 20.79 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Factor in what they cost and see what both get you for similar money and it’s a convincing win for the XUV700. Sure, the Safari exudes toughness and has that roomier third row, but in all other areas it plays second fiddle to the game-changing new XUV. The Mahindra is plusher inside, is loaded with tech and features, has the stronger engine, is easier as well as more entertaining to drive and generally feels like a more sophisticated package.

Mahindra really has hit it out of the park with the XUV700, and the 75,000+ strong order bank is also telling that buyers like what they see.
