Rear Admiral : Maverick. Thirty-plus years of service. Combat medals. Citations. Only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years.
[Cain looks through pages of Maverick's records]
Rear Admiral : 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' Yet you can't get a promotion, you won't retire, and, despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now, if not a senator. Yet here you are: Captain. Why is that?
Maverick : It's one of life's mysteries, sir.
Rear Admiral : This isn't a joke. I asked you a question.
Maverick : I'm where I belong, sir.
Rear Admiral : Well, the navy doesn't see it that way. Not anymore.
Rear Admiral : These planes you've been testing, Captain, one day, sooner or later, they won't need pilots at all. Pilots that need to sleep, eat, take a piss. Pilots that disobey orders. All you did was buy some time for those men out there. The future is coming, and you're not in it.
[Cain faces the officer by the door]
Rear Admiral : Escort this man off the base. Take him to his quarters. Wait with him while he packs his gear. I want him on the road to North Island within the hour.
[surprised look on Maverick's face]
Maverick : North Island, sir?
Rear Admiral : Call came in with impeccable timing, right as I was driving here to ground your ass once and for all. It galls me to say it, but... for reasons known only to the Almighty and your guardian angel, you've been called back to Top Gun.
Maverick : Sir?
Rear Admiral : You are dismissed, Captain.
[Maverick proceeds to leave Cain's office]
Rear Admiral : The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.
[Maverick turns around]
Maverick : Maybe so, sir. But not today.

Mission: impossible - dead reckoning part one and part two : release date, trailers, cast & more, we break down the characters, the ensemble cast, the plot, the release date, and more..
TAGGED AS: Action , blockbusters , movies
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch Tom Cruise drive a motorcycle off a cliff. The seventh movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise will hit theaters this July, and it looks as though it will continue Cruise’s tradition of putting increasingly jaw-dropping, death defying stunts into each one of these action flicks. But, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will just be the first half of a two-part story, as the title suggests. Ahead of the premiere of the first half of Ethan Hunt’s next mission, we’ve done our own stunt work and gathered up everything you need to know about the Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two .
When Do Parts One and Two Come Out?
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh film in the Crusie-led film adaptation of the ’60s and ’70s espionage TV series , hits theaters soon, on July 12, 2023. Fans won’t have to wait (that) long for the conclusion, as Part Two is set to premiere slightly under a year later, on June 28, 2024. However, filming on Part Two is currently paused due to the Writers Strike, so it’s quite possible that the release date will be delayed again.
Both movies will be exclusive theatrical releases — and if they’re anything like Top Gun: Maverick , another Cruise movie from Paramount Pictures, the same studio behind Mission: Impossible , they won’t be streaming for a while. Maverick hit Paramount+ more than 200 days after its theatrical premiere.
Were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic, Dead Reckoning would have already been released, as Part One was originally slated for a July 2021 premiere. Delays due to the pandemic and subsequent COVID filming protocols (this is where Cruise’s viral, uh, virus rant originated) pushed the release back to 2022, then eventually to 2023.
Though it’s rare that any franchise ever truly ends, Dead Reckoning Part Two is expected to be the end of the franchise — at least as it currently exists.
Who’s Directing It?
Christopher McQuarrie , the director who took Mission: Impossible to new heights starting with Rogue Nation , the fifth film in the franchise, returns for both Part One and Part Two of Dead Reckoning . McQuarrie also co-wrote both installments with Erik Jendresen .
Who’s In It?
Tom Cruise first played IMF agent extraordinaire Ethan Hunt in 1996 when the original Mission: Impossible hit theaters. He’ll have just turned 61 when Dead Reckoning Part One premieres, and Part Two will supposedly be his final appearance as the character, some 28 years later.
He’ll be joined by several returning cast members, including Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames as his fellow IMF agents Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell, respectively. Rebecca Ferguson returns as ex-MI6 agent Ilsa Faust, and Henry Czerny returns as former IMF director Eugene Kittridge, a character who hasn’t been seen since the original ‘96 franchise-starter. Vanessa Kirby returns as Alanna Mitsopolis, the black market arms dealer-turned-uneasy ally to Ethan Hunt, as does Frederick Schmidt , playing her brother Zola Mitsopolis.
There are lots of new additions to the franchise as well. Hayley Atwell , best known for playing Peggy Carter in the MCU, joins as Grace, a character McQuarrie described as a “ destructive force of nature ” with “somewhat ambiguous loyalties” on the franchise-focused Light the Fuse podcast . Ozark’ s Esai Morales plays the film’s primary villain, Gabriel (Morales took over for Renfield star Nicholas Hoult , who dropped out due to scheduling issues), while Guardians of the Galaxy’ s Pom Klementieff plays an assassin who works for Gabriel.
Shea Whigham , recently seen in HBO’s Perry Mason , plays Jasper Briggs, an enforcer in a mysterious group known as “The Community” who is attempting to track Ethan Hunt down along with his partner, played by Greg Tarzan Davis . Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Rob Delaney ( Deadpool 2 ), Indira Varma ( Obi-Wan Kenobi ), and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock ) also star, as does The Princess Bride’ s Cary Elwes in an as-yet undisclosed role.
Recent Oscar-winner Angela Bassett , who played CIA director Erika Sloane, was originally supposed to reprise her role but couldn’t due to COVID travel restrictions.
The cast for Part Two hasn’t fully been revealed, though it’s probably safe to assume that most of the major actors from Part One will appear once more, assuming they survive the first movie. We do know, however, that Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham will join the ensemble, as will Parks & Rec’ s Nick Offerman , who plays Sydney, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
What Is Dead Reckoning About?
Candidly speaking, the plots of the Mission: Impossible movies aren’t really their main appeal. They tend to be slick, serviceable MacGuffin chases that are an entertaining framework for banter and Tom Cruise’s insane stunts. But we do have some idea of what to expect from Dead Reckoning Part One . Here’s the official synopsis from Paramount:
“In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.”
Tracking down a weapon that threatens humanity before the bad guys get it? Dark forces from Ethan’s past? A deadly race around the globe, and a mysterious enemy? This is, in other words, pretty standard spy movie stuff, but few franchises are capable of pulling it off with as much style as Mission: Impossible . No specifics for the plot for Part Two have been revealed, so as not to spoil Part One , but it’s probably safe to say it won’t deviate too far from the tried and true formula, even as it serves to wrap up loose ends from Part One .
How Long Will It Be?
Part One is on the longer side. Without credits, it boasts a runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes. The length of Part Two , of course, is TBD.
How Many Trailers Are There?
While there have been no trailers for Part Two yet, naturally, there have been a few for Part One . The first , which was light on dialogue, came out in May of 2022, more than a year before the film’s release. The full trailer came out a year later.
While they’re not quite trailers, Paramount also released a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes, one of which centers on Cruise’s most dangerous and ambitious stunt yet — driving a motorcycle off a cliff and parachuting to safety. It’s wild, and it certainly inspires a deeper appreciation for the work that went into the stunt, but if you don’t want to spoil the majesty of it all, it’s probably best to check it out after you’ve seen the film.
Is Tom Cruise Doing His Own Stunts?
Did you not see the featurette right there? The man drove a motorcycle off a cliff!
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One opens in theaters on July 12, 2023. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two opens in theaters on June 28, 2024.

Your mission — should you choose to accept it — is to head to theaters on July 14, 2023 for the long-awaited (and COVID-delayed) seventh installment of Tom Cruise ’s “Mission: Impossible” film franchise.
“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” marks Cruise’s latest outing as Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), who embarks on an operation which — as the title suggests — promises to be his most dangerous yet.
Popular on Variety
In the behind-the-scenes clip, which first debuted for theater owners at CinemaCon in 2021 , Cruise, McQuarrie and the film’s crew demonstrated how they pulled off a stunt where the actor drives a motorcycle up a ramp and off a cliff, leading into a base jump, which was a highlight of the movie’s first trailer.
So excited to share what we’ve been working on. #MissionImpossible pic.twitter.com/rIyiLzQdMG — Tom Cruise (@TomCruise) December 19, 2022
“This is far and away the most dangerous thing we’ve ever attempted,” Cruise said of the stunt, which is billed as the “biggest in cinema history.”
To train for the complicated sequence, Cruise skydived over 500 times and did about 13,000 motocross jumps.
“I have to get so good at this that there’s just no way I can miss my marks,” Cruise explained, reinforcing just how perilous this all is.
“Coming up with the stunt is just one of the technical challenges,” McQuarrie added. “The other is putting a camera in a place where you can see where Tom is doing it — finding the right lens, the right platform, the right medium. Even two years ago, the cameras didn’t exist that would allow us to do what we’re trying to do today.”
Here’s everything you need to know about “Dead Reckoning Part One”:
What does “Dead Reckoning” mean?
The seventh “Mission: Impossible” movie’s title was officially revealed at CinemaCon in April 2021 , and fans immediately wondered what the mysterious phrase might signal for Ethan and the IMF team. “Dead reckoning” is a navigational term, McQuarrie noted in an interview with Empire magazine , where he explained the connection between the phrase and the plot.
“There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past,” the filmmaker told the magazine. “[Dead reckoning] means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.”
The film’s first trailer gave a glimpse into exactly which ghosts from Ethan’s past might reappear, beginning with Henry Czerny, who reprises his role as former IMF director Eugene Kittridge for the first time in more than 25 years.
“Your days of fighting for the so-called ‘Greater Good’ are over,” Cherny’s Kittridge tells Hunt at the top of the teaser, which previews all the death-defying action sequences to come.
As the tensions builds, Kittridge continues, serving Hunt with an ultimatum: “This is our chance to control the truth. The concepts of right and wrong, for everyone for centuries to come. You’re fighting to save an ideal that doesn’t exist. It never did. You need to pick a side.”
Cruise has starred in and produced all the “Mission: Impossible” movies, which are based on the 1966 television series created by Bruce Geller and have grossed over $3.5 billion at the box office. While the sequels (2000’s “Mission: Impossible II” and 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III”) used standard-fare Roman numerals to distinguish them, the Brad Bird-helmed fourth film, 2011’s “Ghost Protocol,” bucked that tradition. Then, McQuarrie took over the franchise with the fifth and sixth films, subtitled “Rogue Nation” and “Fallout,” respectively.
“M:I-7” and “M:I-8” were announced In January 2019 with plans to film the movies back-to-back, but the COVID-19 pandemic delays and Cruise’s promotional duties for “Top Gun: Maverick” ultimately scuttled those plans. “Dead Reckoning Part Two,” as it will presumably be called, is currently filming and is scheduled for release on June 28, 2024.
Who’s in the cast?
“Dead Reckoning Part One” follows the events of “Fallout,” where Hunt and his IMF crew saved the world from a nuclear apocalypse amid a series of double-crosses, including a memorable turn from Henry Cavill (as CIA assassin August Walker). The movie was the highest-grossing entry in the franchise, earning nearly $800 million at the box office.
Also returning from “Fallout” are Vanessa Kirby — Alanna Mitsopolis, a black market arms dealer also known as the White Widow — and Frederick Schmidt, as her brother Zola. The siblings are in the family business: Their mother is Max (Vanessa Redgrave), the world-class smuggler Ethan tangoed with in the 1996 original.
Among the spy thriller’s new players are Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff and Shea Whigham, who all feature prominently in the film’s first footage. Atwell plays a mysterious new character named Grace, while Morales serves as “Dead Reckoning’s” primary villain.
In March 2021, McQuarrie announced that the cast would also include Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell and Mark Gatiss. Rounding out the ensemble are Greg Tarzan Davis (who appeared with Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick”) and Mariela Garriga, both in undisclosed roles. Joining the ensemble for “Mission: Impossible 8” are Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman and Janet McTeer.
COVID Delays
“Dead Reckoning Part One” was initially scheduled to debut on July 23, 2021 before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the film almost exactly two years. Its release date has changed four times.
The production was one of the first major studio films to resume after the pandemic struck, but its globe-trotting shoot proved to be challenging as COVID cases waned and then surged in many of the half-dozen countries where the movie was set to shoot. As the production pivoted locations, it also shut down approximately seven times, and the budget ballooned to $290 million, which far surpassed the $190 million spent on “Fallout.”
While the cost-increases were unavoidable given the circumstances, Cruise also became the champion of COVID-safety on set in December 2020 after an audio clip leaked to the press of him chastising crew members on location in the U.K. for not adhering to the protocols.
As first reported by The Sun , after Cruise saw two crew members standing too close to one another in front of a computer screen, he told the crew: “We are the gold standard. They’re back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us. Because they believe in us and what we’re doing. I’m on the phone with every fucking studio at night, insurance companies, producers and they’re looking at us and using us to make their movies. We are creating thousands of jobs, you motherfuckers. I don’t ever want to see it again. Ever!”
While the clip was controversial due to Cruise’s obvious frustration, George Clooney was among Cruise’s defenders, telling Howard Stern (via E! Online) that the actor “didn’t overreact because it is a problem.”
Does this mark the end of the line for Ethan?
When news broke that “Dead Reckoning” was planned to be an epic two-part extravaganza, audiences couldn’t help but be reminded of the end of the “Harry Potter,” “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” franchises, which all ended with two-part finales.
In February, sources told Variety that the two films were designed “as a sendoff for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character,” but filmmakers will neither confirm nor deny that this is his swan song.
“I’ve been working with Tom Cruise for 15 years and I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve been standing next to the man, witnessed an event and then read about it in the trades the next day and none of what they describe is actually true,” McQuarrie said when asked directly about the future of the action franchise during an appearance on the “Light the Fuse” podcast.
He added: “You learn to ignore it and laugh at it. In today’s world, you wait 17 minutes and another news cycle will sweep it away.”
Our estimation?
As long as Cruise keeps bringing in the box office bacon, it stands to reason that the impossible missions can — and just might — continue.
… Should he choose to accept them.

Tom Cruise is back for another round of defying death in the new trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 . The trailer debuted on Wednesday and gives us glimpses of Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Vanessa Kirby, who will all be back this time around. Dead Reckoning Part 1 is set to arrive in theaters on July 12.
This trailer doesn’t give too much more of the plot away, instead bringing us back to some of the stunts we’ve seen before, including a massive train wreck and Tom Cruise falling/jumping off of at least two different cliffs. According to the official plot synopsis, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and the IMF crew are tasked with “track[ing] down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands.”
Just like the previous trailer, this one hinges on the return of Kittridge (Henry Czerny), a character from the 1996 Mission: Impossible movie who is back to warn Ethan about the gravity of his choices and the consequences of his actions. Beyond that, most of the dialogue is a reminder that this is the beginning of the end for this franchise, including a few teases that someone’s life might have to be sacrificed to complete the mission. The trailer also gives brief shots of Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, who are joining the franchise for the first time in this movie.
Rounding out the cast are Esai Morales, Mariela Garriga, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Cary Elwes, Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma, and Rob Delaney.
Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning is set to be the grand finale of the Mission: Impossible series — or at least the Tom Cruise version of it. The finale is broken into two parts, with Dead Reckoning Part 2 set to follow in 2024. Both films are directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has helmed every entry in the series since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation . McQuarrie also wrote Part 1 and co-wrote Part 2 with Erik Jendresen ( Band of Brothers ).

Originally scheduled to hit theaters in July 2019, Top Gun: Maverick had its premiere pushed back almost a year by Paramount Pictures. The studio eventually announced a June 26, 2020, release date for the film, only to push it up to June 24 in early March. A month later, the film’s release date was then shifted again due to the coronavirus pandemic that closed theaters around the world.
Top Gun: Maverick is currently scheduled to hit theaters December 23, 2020.
Paramount released a new, pulse-pounding TV spot during Super Bowl LIV. The high-octane, stressful trailer teases Maverick’s fate as a voice-over explains that he is potentially facing court-martial and a dishonorable discharge. This is interspersed with Maverick’s heavy breathing as he pilots a fighter jet at death-defying speeds.
In conjunction with a new interview with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, Entertainment Weekly has obtained new images from the upcoming sequel to the 1986 action hit.
In the images, we see some of the new hot-shot pilots that Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell will help maximize their skills. Unlike in the first movie, these pilots are already graduates of the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (a.k.a. Top Gun).
See exclusive photos of the new ' #TopGun : Maverick' recruits https://t.co/mOw77z78J7 — Entertainment Weekly (@EW) January 29, 2020
According to Kosinski, “In our film, these are all Top Gun graduates who are coming back for a special training detachment — which is another aspect of Top Gun where they can go back for specialized training after they’ve already graduated. They’re at a different level of experience than in the first film.”
A behind-the-scenes featurette shows how director Joseph Kosinski staged some of the fighter pilot footage and how physically grueling the work was for the actors. Tom Cruise and other Top Gun: Maverick cast members look to be deeply uncomfortable or even ready to vomit in the footage.
The production team put six IMAX-quality cameras in the cockpit as the cast went through flight training with the U.S. Navy. It’s clear that with notorious daredevil Cruise attached, the entire cast was expected to learn to fly, no matter how hard the struggle.
On December 16, 2019, Paramount released a new trailer for the Top Gun sequel (see above). This one spends more time in the cockpit with Tom Cruise’s character, opening on the ace pilot making some risky flight maneuvers as a voiceover explains to the training program’s students (and reminds us, the audience) that this is one of the finest pilots to ever come out of the Top Gun flight academy.
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is back at Top Gun as an instructor, and he appears to be a hands-on teacher, inviting students to practice dogfighting by taking him on two at a time. As you might expect, the recruits are shocked out of their amusement fairly quickly as Maverick shows why he’s so highly regarded.
The trailer also pays homage to many of the classic scenes of the first film: Pilots singing at a bar, the occasional brawl, Maverick riding his motorcycle at high speed with a new love interest (Jennifer Connelly) hanging on, and even some beach sports — although this time, it looks like it’s going to football, not volleyball, for the aspiring Top Gun students.
Tom Cruise himself introduced the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick (see below) during San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019. The preview of the film not only showed off Cruise’s return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, but also teased some of the impressive flight sequences that have been generating a lot of buzz.
A month earlier, audiences at the CineEurope 2019 trade show were treated to the first footage from Top Gun: Maverick , with two minutes of scenes from the film shown to attendees.
The footage was introduced by Mark Viane, Paramount Pictures’ president of International Theatrical Distribution, and Mary Daily, co-president of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, who stepped out on stage in full flight gear after the floor of the theater filled with mist. No description of the footage was released, but it reportedly received a positive response .
In a May 2019 interview with Collider , actor Jon Hamm had nothing but praise for the high-tech filmmaking techniques intended to give Maverick audiences an in-the-cockpit experience.
“They’re using some technology on this that has never before seen,” said Hamm. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”
On May 31, 2018, Cruise posted a photo on Twitter from the first day of production on the Top Gun sequel. The photo features Cruise back in Maverick’s flight suit, with the superimposed tagline “Feel the Need” giving nostalgic fans exactly what they’re looking for.
The film brings back original Top Gun star Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the hotshot pilot character that helped make Cruise a superstar. He’ll be joined by Val Kilmer, reprising his role as Maverick’s rival, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
As for the actor filling one of the film’s primary legacy roles, Whiplash actor Miles Teller will portray the son of Maverick’s former wingman, Goose, who was played by Anthony Edwards in the first film. Teller was seen on set with Cruise in some December 2018 photos that reveal the mustache he’ll be sporting for the film — Teller’s look clearly inspired by Edwards’ impressively ’80s facial hair.

Teller and Hidden Figures actor Glen Powell were the final two contenders for the role. Despite Teller winning the part, Powell’s audition reportedly impressed the Top Gun producers enough to earn him a different, unidentified role in the film.
In July 2018, A Beautiful Mind actress Jennifer Connelly (below) was reported to be in talks to play the female lead in the film. The Academy Award winner is expected to play a single mother who runs a local bar near the naval base where the story is set.
The danger zone got a little more crowded in August with a flurry of additional cast members added to the project. Mad Men actor Jon Hamm and four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris ( Westworld ) were among the most high-profile additions to the cast, joining the film in unidentified roles.
Also added to the cast that month was Lewis Pullman (the son of actor Bill Pullman), as well as Thomasin McKenzie ( Jojo Rabbit ) as the daughter of Connelly’s character; Charles Parnell ( A Million Little Pieces ) as an admiral; Bashir Salahuddin ( GLOW ) as an engineer; and the trio of Jay Ellis ( Insecure ), Danny Ramirez ( Assassination Nation ), and Monica Barbaro ( The Good Cop ) as pilots.
Paramount Pictures isn’t revealing too many details about the sequel’s plot, but the story is rumored to explore the relationship between human pilots and unmanned drones in the modern military. Given the film’s working title, Top Gun: Maverick , it’s expected that Cruise’s pilot character will be at the center of the story — likely fighting to affirm the value of human pilots.
The film will reunite Cruise with Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski, who also directed 2010’s TRON: Legacy . Paramount Pictures confirmed Kosinski as the film’s director in a July 2017 announcement that also revealed the film’s initial July 2019 release date. Perhaps just as notably, the original film’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, is also behind the scenes for the sequel.
Kenny Loggins is planning to record a new version of his song Danger Zone for the Top Gun sequel. The original film featured a memorable montage of flight clips set to Danger Zone , and Loggins indicated that he’s hoping to team up with a young rock musician or band to give the song new life in T op Gun: Maverick .

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One: release date, reviews, trailer and everything we know about the Tom Cruise movie
What crazy stunts will Tom Cruise pull off in the latest Mission: Impossible movie?
Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is back to save the world once again in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh entry in the long-running franchise. Mission: Impossible movies date back to 1996 and are defined by Cruise and the incredible stunts he performs — the wire hanging scene, climbing the Burj Khalifa, doing a HALO skydive and clinging to the outside of a plane as it takes off being some of the most memorable.
Even as Tom Cruise approaches 60, the Mission: Impossible movies seemingly get better as they go along. The last entry, Mission: Impossible — Fallout , is the highest rated in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes (97% "Fresh") and had the best box office of any of the previous movies ($791 million worldwide).
So how will Cruise raise the stakes in this new entry to the action franchise? Here's everything we know about Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One .
Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One release date
Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One officially arrives in movie theaters on Wednesday, July 12 in the US and two days earlier in the UK on July 10.
The release of the seventh Mission: Impossible movie is a long time coming. Mission: Impossible — Fallout was released in 2018 and the hope was that the next movie would follow quickly on its heels with a July 2020 release. However, in the early days of the pandemic it was moved from that July 2020 date to December 2020, only for it to be moved again to November 19, 2021, then to May 27, 2022, and then again to Sept. 30, 2022, before it was finally shifted to its 2023 summer blockbuster date.
Part of the reason for the delays was the challenges of doing production during the pandemic. Production was shut down multiple times, first at the beginning of the pandemic and then again in 2021 when there were cases among the crew . At one point during production, Cruise was captured on audio criticizing crew members for not following COVID safety protocols.
With the new date for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the shift impacts Mission: Impossible 8 (which is being filmed back-to-back with to movie number seven and will presumably be called Dead Reckoning Part Two ), moving from its previous date of July 7, 2023 to June 28, 2024.

While not a trailer, footage that was shown from the 2022 CinemaCon event has been shared online. In it Tom Cruise is standing on a biplane over a gorgeous backdrop. Is there anything this man won't do for a cool looking stunt?
Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One plot
Even though we're just about four months away from the movie's release, there is almost no information on what the plot of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is going to be. But we can assume that Ethan Hunt and his IMF team will have to race against the clock to save the world from some kind of imminent destruction (after all, if it ain't broke).
While specific plot details are being kept secret, we have gotten some inklings on what stunts Tom Cruise will be performing for audiences’ enjoyment. A behind-the-scenes look at what Cruise and company have described as his most dangerous stunt came out in December 2022.
Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast
Tom Cruise has been at the center of the Mission: Impossible franchise since the very beginning as IMF (Impossible Mission Force) agent Ethan Hunt. It has become one of the actor's most iconic roles in a career that also includes movies like Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick ), Risky Business and Jerry Maguire .
While there were originally thoughts Cruise would hand the franchise off to Jeremy Renner after the latter was introduced in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol , Cruise remains a constant and the driving force behind the movies (Renner left the franchise after Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ). However, Mission: Impossible has built up a team to go along with Cruise over its last few movies.
The IMF team that supports Cruise's Ethan Hunt is led by Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell (around since Mission: Impossible ), Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn (around since Mission: Impossible III ) and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust (around since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ).
There are also some tenuous allies from past movies that will be returning for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , including Vanessa Kirby's White Widow and Angela Bassett's Erika Sloane, both of whom debuted in Mission: Impossible — Fallout. There's also Henry Czerny, who played Eugene Kittridge in the original Mission: Impossible .
Making their Mission: Impossible debuts with this seventh entry are going to be Hayley Atwell ( Agent Carter , Captain America: The First Avenger ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride , Stranger Things ), Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Rob Delaney ( Home Sweet Home Alone , Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw ), Indira Varma ( Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Charles Parnell ( The Last Ship , Top Gun: Maverick ), Shea Whigham ( Boardwalk Empire , Perry Mason ) and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock , The Favourite ).
On March 10, director Christopher McQuarrie also announced via Instagram that Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham is joining the franchise in an unspecified role.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One reviews
The reviews are in for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , and they are some of the best of the summer. In WTW's Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One review , our reviewed called it one of the most thrilling rides in the franchise.
Other critics were pretty laudatory as well, as the movie quickly became "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes and as of July 5 has a 98% score.
Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One director
Mission: Impossible went through four different directors with the first four movies of the franchise, including Brian De Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird. However, since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation , the franchise has been shepherded by Christopher McQuarrie, who is once again serving as director for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One (and Mission: Impossible 8 ).
The Mission: Impossible movies have been McQuarrie's calling card as a director, though he had previously directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher (2012). Prior to taking over as a director, McQuarrie was best known as a writer, having penned The Usual Suspects and other Tom Cruise movies like Valkyrie , Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow . McQuarrie has also written all of the Mission: Impossible movies that he has directed.

Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024
After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’
Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!
1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)
Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.
Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.
2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)
Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.
3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)
A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.
Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

This 20-Year-Old Tom Cruise Movie Can Lay The Blueprint For His Future After Mission: Impossible
- Tom Cruise's action star status faces a challenge as he ages, so exploring villain roles could be the key to his future success after Mission: Impossible .
- A return to the character depth of his role in Collateral could provide Cruise with exciting new opportunities in his career.
- Practical stunt work sets Cruise apart in action films, but taking on antagonistic roles could help him stay relevant in the industry.
Tom Cruise has been a movie star for over forty years, and one of his most underrated films could be the key to the next phase of his career after Mission: Impossible . Cruise, in his most recent star era, has become synonymous with daring stunt work and large action set pieces in his blockbuster films. The two most notable examples are his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, which is currently filming its eighth installment, and Top Gun: Maverick , which was the highest-grossing film of 2022 .
In many ways, Cruise is as popular as he's ever been and remains one of the last examples of a true movie star. There's just one issue he faces, and it's one that will only get worse with time: he's now in his 60s. He's still in amazing shape for his age and can still perform all the stunts his action roles require of him. Yet, at a certain point, Cruise just won't be able to physically accomplish these feats anymore, and the question will arise of what he will do to define the next era of his career.
10 Movies That Defined Tom Cruise's Career
Tom cruise should follow collateral's blueprint after mission: impossible.
The answer regarding a future after Mission: Impossible lies with one of Cruise's most memorable roles as the cold-blooded hitman Vincent in Michael Mann's Collateral . Collateral follows a single night in the life of cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx), who is forced to transport Vincent around L.A. as he crosses off targets on his hit list. The film doesn't just feature excellent action scenes but also a fascinating back-and-forth between the two leads. Many long exchanges of dialogue happen within Max's cab, and the audience sees him and Vincent argue philosophically about the value of human life and their differing ideologies.
Cruise had to train for Collateral since it was an unexpected role, as the actor had never played the main villain of a film before, and to this day hasn't done it again since. The uniqueness of this notion paid off, as Collateral proved to be a healthy hit. It grossed $220 million worldwide from an estimated $65 million budget (via Box Office Mojo ). Cruise's movie star charisma brought layers of charm to Vincent's sociopathic demeanor, and it is still widely considered one of the best performances of Cruise's long and illustrious career. A return to this type of role would be an exciting prospect for the actor.
Every Michael Mann Movie, Ranked Worst To Best
Villain roles can help tom cruise stay relevant.
As Cruise gets older, it'll become more challenging for him to remain at the center of these action franchises. Unlike films like Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny , which heavily relied on CGI to assist 81-year-old Harrison Ford with the action scenes, Cruise's movies use their practical stunt work as a selling point. Top Gun: Maverick had Cruise flying real jets , and Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One had him jumping off a massive cliff on a motorcycle. Too much CGI would cheapen the impact of these stunts, which have become a big part of Cruise's brand.
However, if Cruise takes on more antagonistic parts in movies like Collateral going forward, he could not only avoid putting his body at risk in as many huge stunts but also access an untapped well of potential film roles. Cruise would still be a selling point in whatever franchise he chooses to be a part of, and he'd be able to explore the darkness he displayed as Vincent all those years ago. It'd be an exciting development for fans to witness, full of possibilities, and could prove to be the key to Tom Cruise staying relevant through the 2020s and beyond.

First introduced in the late 90's cartoon series Beast Wars: Transformers , the Maximals and the Predacons are the next stages in the evolution of Cybertronians, taking after the Autobots and the Decepticons respectively. Unlike the Autobots and the Decepticons, Maximals and Predacons transform into animals and birds instead of vehicles. In the continuity of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts , the two groups have been on Earth for a long time and we're guessing there are some time-travel shenanigans involved. The Terrorcons, the main villains of the movie, are usually depicted as a faction within the Decepticons. In the movie, they appear to be an independent group that hunts Autobots and Maximals.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be featuring a number of characters, including three different factions of Cybertronians. Here are the most important characters who will appear in the movie:
First the Humans:
- Anthony Ramos plays Noah, an ex-military electronics expert living in Brooklyn with his mother and younger brother. Luna Lauren Vélez appears as Noah's mother.
- Dominique Fishback plays Elena, a very talented woman who works as an artifact researcher at a museum. Elena is great at her job but her boss constantly takes credit for her work, which pushes her to find a way to stand out.
The Autobots:
- Peter Cullen voices Optimus Prime, the iconic leader of the Autobots, who transforms into a 1987 Freightliner FLA semi-truck. Unlike the usual portrayal of Optimus as a stoic figure who is the ultimate Marty Stu, this version of the heroic leader is very new to Earth and is still in the process of becoming the Autobot we know and love.
- Bumblebee is an Autobot scout who was sent to Earth in the previous movie. He transforms into a yellow and black 1970s Classic Chevrolet Camaro. Dylan O'Brien voiced the character in Bumblebee .
- Pete Davidson voices Mirage, who is an Autobot whose alternate mode is a silver-blue Porsche. Mirage has been described as fast, flashy, and the rebel of the group. He is the Autobot who forms the strongest connection to the humans of the story.
- Liza Koshy plays Arcee, a female Autobot who is a fierce warrior and loyal soldier. She transforms into a red-white Ducati 916 motorcycle and was voiced by Grey Griffin in Bumblebee .
- Voiced by Cristo Fernández, Wheeljack is an Autobot scientist and mechanic, much like Ratchet in the Michael Bay Transformers movies . He transforms into a Brown and White 1964 Volkswagen Classic Devon Camper van. Steve Blum voiced Wheeljack in Bumblebee.
- John DiMaggio voices Stratosphere, an Autobot soldier who transforms into a cargo plane and provides transport for his fellow fighters.
The Maximals:
- Ron Perlman voices Optimus Primal , the leader of the Maximals. In the Beast Wars stories, Primal is the spiritual successor to Optimus Prime. He transforms into a gorilla.
- David Sobolov voices Rhinox, a Maximal who is both the muscle and the brains of the outfit. He transforms into a rhinoceros and basically just wants to ram everything with his horn.
- Michelle Yeoh voices Airazor, a female Maximal who is the heart of the group, described as being very nurturing unless you cross her. She transforms into a peregrine falcon.
- Cheetor is a Maximal whose alternate form is (you guessed it) a cheetah.
And finally, The Terrorcons:
- Peter Dinklage voices Scourge, the leader of the Terrorcons and a trophy hunter. He's the primary antagonist of the movie and transforms into a Black Kenworth JF Logging truck.
- Michaela Jaé Rodriguez voices Nightbird, a female Terrorcon and Scourge's right hand. She transforms into a Nissan Skyline GT-R R33.
- Battletrap is another Terrorcon. He transforms into an orange General Motors c4500 topkick tow truck. He is also voiced by David Sobolov.
Additionally, Tobe Nwigwe plays a character called Reek and the Predacons, the arch-enemies of the Maximals, are also reportedly appearing in the movie.

Principal photography on Transformers: Rise of the Beasts kicked off on June 7, 2021, in Los Angeles. The movie has also been filmed at locations around the world including Machu Picchu, Montreal, and Brooklyn. Director Steven Caple Jr. announced the end of filming on October 20, 2021 , with a post on his Instagram page.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set after the events of Bumblebee , taking place in the 1990s . The movie's story begins in 1994 and will likely follow a linear narrative. As for where the story takes place, fans can expect to see our Cybertronian heroes and villains head to locations around the world. From the filming details, we do know that at least part of the story takes place at Machu Pichu. And we might just see more action set on Cybertron, perhaps during the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons .
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts continues the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons with the arrival of the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons changing the course of the conflict. Whether that's for better or for worse, we'll have to wait and see. While there isn't an official synopsis for the movie yet, we do know that the film is a reboot, and we can make some educated guesses based on the characters who have been revealed so far. Be warned, this is speculation, even though it's probably right.
Based on the trailer, we're guessing Noah comes across Mirage, and meets the other Autobots through him, while Elena sets out to find some artifact, which leads to her unearthing the Maximals who have been hidden on Earth for a while. With the Maximals coming back, the Predacons also follow. This would then bring them to the attention of Optimus Prime and his Autobots, who will probably see the Maximals as allies. The arrival of the Maximals would also bring the Terrorcons to Earth, who are probably out to hunt the beastly Cybertronians. And by the end of the movie, we'll likely see the Autobots and the Maximals uniting to take down the Terrorcons and forever joining forces to rid the world of the Predacon/Decepticon threat. Yeah, that's probably what's going to happen, though we won't know until we watch the movie.

Tom Cruise has taken over the streets of London!
On Sunday, April 28, the actor, 61, was photographed filming scenes for the next Mission: Impossible movie in the British capital outside an invented Tube station called 'Trafalgar Square.'
Cruise shut down the real Trafalgar Square for the shoot as he was seen coming in and out of the London Underground station while surrounded by crowds of extras.
Off camera, the action star appeared in happier spirits as he chatted to members of the crew in between takes.
The eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise is set for a May 23, 2025 release. According to Deadline , the release was delayed by a year due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , which ended in November 2023.
Cruise returns to the franchise as protagonist Ethan Hunt, along with director and longtime collaborative partner Christopher McQuarrie.
The actor was spotted filming more adrenaline-fueled scenes for the action movie in London last month.
On March 24, the American Made star was photographed sprinting down a street in the capital wearing a black suit with an unbuttoned white shirt covered in fake blood.
Last summer, Cruise returned to the big screen in the seventh film in the franchise, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning .
The film made $172 million at the domestic box office and earned the franchise its first Oscars nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the 96th Academy Awards earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Cruise is reportedly set to appear in another sequel of his movies for the third Top Gun film , following the huge success of the second installment, Top Gun: Maverick , released in 2022.
In January, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Paramount is developing the sequel with co-writer Ehren Kruger, with Joe Kosinski set to direct. According to the outlet, the film will see Cruise return in his role as Pete Mitchell, alongside his Maverick costars Glen Powell and Miles Teller .

Godzilla x kong: the new empire vod release date confirmed after $500 million box office.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's VOD release date has been confirmed after the Monterverse movie made over $500 million at the box office.
- Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hits VOD on May 14 after earning $522 million globally from theaters.
- The Monsterverse movie outperformed expectations with a $194 million debut and the potential to surpass franchise records.
- Despite mixed reviews, the film's success shows audiences continue to enjoy the Monsterverse franchise.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 's VOD release date has been confirmed after the MonsterVerse movie made over $500 million at the box office. The fifth film in the franchise and a direct sequel to 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong , the latest installment sees the two titular titans teaming up once again to stop Hollow Earth's tyrannical leader, the Skar King, and the ice-breathing Shimo from destroying the surface world. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 's cast includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen.
Now, a month after it was released in theaters, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 's VOD release date has been confirmed. According to ComicBook.com , the latest Monsterverse movie is coming to digital platforms on May 14 . The movie should eventually be available for streaming on Max, though a release date has yet to be announced.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Ending & Monsterverse Setup Explained
How did godzilla x kong: the new empire perform in theaters.
With the latest Monsterverse movie heading to digital platforms on May 14, this will essentially mark the end of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 's box office run, which has been an overwhelming success. Released in theaters on March 29, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned $194 million globally during its debut weekend , beating out Dune: Part Two 's $182 million to claim the title as the largest opening weekend of 2024 so far. Domestically, it opened to $80 million, which was the Monsterverse franchise's second-best behind 2014's Godzilla .
To date, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has made $522 million at the box office , which breaks down to $182 million domestically and $339 million internationally. It's the second highest-grossing movie domestically in the Monsterverse franchise, and it only needs $18 million more to surpass 2014's Godzilla . It's also in striking distance of surpassing 2017's Kong: Skull Island ($568 million) as the highest-grossing Monsterverse movie globally. However, once The New Empire arrives on digital platforms, its box office sales will decrease dramatically, so it's unlikely to make up the difference in a little over a week, barring any re-releases.
This box office success is despite Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 's reviews , which were some of the worst the Monsterverse franchise has ever seen, resulting in a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score. However, as evidenced by its 91% audience score and its box office success, the majority of moviegoers are still enjoying the Monsterverse franchise. Soon enough, audiences will be able to enjoy Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from the comfort of their own home.
