tongabezi tours

One of the first luxury lodges in the area,  Tongabezi  does a great job of being right by the action but hidden in peaceful seclusion. With fantastic service and food, it is the perfect place to come and relax for a few days as you check out the Falls. With lots of inclusive activities, you won’t get bored of things to do but we would highly recommend spending an afternoon relaxing at the lodge, enjoying all it has to offer.

Location and activities

There are no shortage of activities to do at Victoria Falls but Tongabezi have a really great variety on offer included in the stay as well as a really great activities centre where you can book any of the included activities. From game drives to fall tours, sunset cruises with a special Sampan dinner to micro lighting, white-water rafting, the famous Vic Falls bungee jump and visits to the local school. The activities on offer here rival all the others. They have several initiatives and charities in the area, which you can visit where they are really benefitting the community.

Variety of rooms

At Tongabezi each of the five cottages is different as well as having six unique houses perfect for small groups or families. From those that are perfect for honeymoons to those that have baths on the deck (the bird house), the one that has several levels within a tree (The tree house) to the nut house with its own plunge pool, each one is unique and perfect for someone!

Each of the rooms is spacious and open so you have uninterrupted views. With king sized beds, fans and en-suite bathrooms, each one is beautifully furnished. Service here is excellent with great lounge areas split over different levels and areas.

Sustainability

At Tongabezi, Vanessa has been involved in many local projects including supporting a local school which encourages its students to ‘think green’. From a pre school of just 15 to a primary school of 240 children from the surrounding area to give them a better chance at life starting with a good education as well as supporting the teachers with their housing! They also have a very eco-friendly set up at Tongabezi using solar power, they use biodegradable products, eliminate plastic, grow their own fresh fruit and veg and reuse water with their purification system. They also have a fund for staff and their families affected by HIV. All in all Tongabezi has really set the standard for helping local communities from day 1 and is still a leader in their field.

LOW Season : 3 Jan – 30 Apr & 1 Oct – 22 Dec (exc. Easter 7 – 11 Apr)

Heaven on earth!

There really aren’t words to describe this place!! We stayed here as part of our honeymoon and we couldn’t have been happier. The service was unbelievable and the best we have ever experienced, our valet Matron was so wonderful and looked after us both so well. We loved all the staff there as they were so friendly and were determined to make our stay incredible. JC, Joseph, Felix, Matron, Clement and Brian were ones we particularly want to mention as they went above and beyond! Our room was just stunning, we stayed in the amazing Nuthouse which had the most breath taking view.

Unforgettable and memorable experience of peace, tranquility, fun experiences on the mighty Zambezi

Nothing is impossible, all can be organized in an easy and friendly way. Your butler manages your linen, your meals and your wishes with a smile. We had the most marvelous family time.

Wonderful setting, service, accommodations

From the first step of your arrival the service is courteous, warm and very helpful. I am always pleased with good service on a trip , but this was exceptional- every staff person I had contact with ! And that was exceeded by my ‘butler’ for Bird House. Bird House is superb, great view of the river and wildlife. Coffee in the morning was a delight. The staff does an excellent job of helping to arrange a wide variety of activities that are available.

tongabezi tours

(Devil’s Pool and Angel’s Pool if available)

Official guided tours to Livingstone Island have a 100% safety record. It is illegal and dangerous to visit the Island with a private guide or on your own, and Livingstone Island is the only place to safely swim on the edge of Victoria Falls.

tongabezi tours

You will begin and end your activity at the Livingstone Island Launch Site - between the Victoria Falls border and Livingstone Town. The experience itself is right on the edge of Victoria Falls.

Time of Year

Devil's Pool is open during the drier months of the year, usually between mid-August and late December when the Zambezi water levels are low enough for swimmers to take the plunge. Angel’s Pool is usually open when Devil’s Pool is closed but Livingstone Island is still open. Livingstone Island is usually closed entirely between the end of March and the middle of of June.

Please be aware that these dates are entirely dependent on the Zambezi River water levels so do reach out for more details closer to the time.

The minimum age for children on the island is 8 years old but for swimming activities the minimum age is 12. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult who will need to sign to confirm their ages.

Time of Day

Please be at the Launch site jetty at least 30 minutes prior to stated activity time. We offer five trips a day to Livingstone Island, with a maximum of 24 people each time.

The Livingstone Island Tour and the Devil's Pool activities are very seasonal: when the Zambezi River is too high the island is closed. It can also be affected by rainfall, so although Livingstone Island operates when it is raining, be aware that the activity may need to be cancelled during heavy rainstorms. We provide raincoats for when the waterfall is at its most magnificent!

What to Wear

Swimwear, comfortable clothes and walking shoes. From June to August we recommend guests bring warm clothes because it can be cold and windy.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, swimming towel, hat, sunglasses and your camera.

Return boat transfer from the Launch Site to Livingstone Island. A guided tour of the island by our experienced local guides. A gourmet meal prepared for you on the island, with tea, coffee and a selection of drinks. Swimming activity only if the water is low enough

Items of a personal nature, transfers to/from your hotel.

About Swimming

NOTE: DEVIL’S POOL AND ANGEL’S POOL ARE ONLY AVAILABLE WHEN THE ZAMBEZI IS LOW.

Safety is our first priority and therefore Tongabezi reserves the right to refuse the swimming activities without prior notice to weak swimmers or if the water levels seem too high. Children must be 12 and above to swim. Unless you are visiting between mid-August and late December, be sure to check the river levels with our team in advance so as to avoid disappointment.

The Boat Ride to the Edge

Tongabezi offers five trips a day to Livingstone Island, following in the bold footsteps of Dr David Livingstone who first famously reached the island via canoe. Today, we prefer to trust in the power of our twin engine boats to get you across the fast currents and to the very edge of the waterfall. This is a thrilling journey, but trust that our guides have been manoeuvring through these channels for years and know exactly what they are doing.

Please be aware that our walking experience differs from the activities described on our home page.

Livingstone Island can be reached by boat or on foot. Both activities are dependent on the Zambezi River water levels. Please read specific information regarding necessary fitness levels, meeting points, and what is or isn’t included with each type of activity.

Official guided tours to Livingstone Island have a 100% safety record. It is illegal and dangerous to visit the island with a private guide or on your own, and Livingstone Island is the only place to safely swim on the edge of Victoria Falls.

It is possible to arrange a boat ride back from the island as a part of your walking activity, for an added cost of $10 per person. This is only possible on the walk back, not to the island, and you would end your activity at our launch site rather than at the Victoria Falls entrance.

You will begin and end your walking activity at our office which can be found at the entrance to Victoria Falls on the Zambian side. The experience itself is right on the edge of Victoria Falls.

It is worth noting that if you arrange a boat ride back from the island as a part of your walking activity, for a cost of $10 per person, you will end your activity at our Livingstone Island launch site, rather than back to the Victoria Falls entrance. The Livingstone Island launch site is further along the river towards Livingstone itself.

The minimum age for children on the island is 8 years old but for this walking activity, as well as swimming activities, the minimum age is 12. If your children are between 8 and 12, please book a Breezer, Lunch or High Tea rather than a Walking Experience, and be aware that they will not be able to swim.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult who will need to sign to confirm their ages.

Swimwear, comfortable clothes and closed walking shoes.

Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and your camera.

Please be at the meeting spot at least 30 minutes prior to stated activity time. We offer 4 walking trips a day to Livingstone Island, with a maximum of 6 people in each group. The activity itself takes approximately 1h45 minutes from start to finish.

Opening dates vary with the Zambezi each year. However, Livingstone Island itself is usually closed between the end of March and the middle of June.

The best time for Devil’s Pool is during the drier months of the year, mostly between mid-August and late December when the Zambezi River levels are at their lowest. When Devil’s Pool is closed, Angel’s Pool is likely to be open, at least up until close to the dates when the island itself closes due to high waters.

The walking activity is usually available between mid-September and the end of December.

A reasonable level of walking fitness is needed in order to truly enjoy the route across the waterfall itself to Livingstone Island. The journey itself can take up to 35-minutes, and you will be crossing parts of Victoria Falls which are usually underwater, so this means navigating occasionally slippery rocks. Guests must wear good walking shoes.

For travellers with mobility issues, this experience will not be possible. Please do reach out ot our team if you have queries about your mobility level, as our Breezer, Lunch, or High Tea may be more appropriate for you.

A return walk guided by our experienced local guides to the island across the dry parts of Victoria Falls, where the waterfall itself usually thunders and you can now clamber. A guided tour of Livingstone Island. Soft drinks. Swimming activity only if the water is low enough. Towels will be provided for the swim.

Items of a personal nature, transfers to/from your hotel, Victoria Falls National Park fees.

Livingstone Island is a World Heritage Site, on the edge of one of the Natural Wonders of the World. Naturally, this means that we are extremely careful about our impact on not only the island but also the community who knew about the 'Mosi oa Tunya' for hundreds of years before it was given another name. No part of your Livingstone Island experience will leave negative footprints on the island, as the only part of our activity that cannot be removed at a moment’s notice is the official plaque.

A percentage of the profits from Livingstone Island is also directed straight in the local Mukuni Village, to empower the community closest to the Falls. Over the years, this support has been used to build teacher’s houses, provide education and healthcare, and most recently to build an immense Community Farm which not only provides food but also a Training Centre for sustainable, organic farming. Our team on the ground love showing visitors the difference between produce that is grown with chemicals and pesticides, as opposed to their flourishing crops which rely on completely natural processes. Do drop by some time!

On a tour of the island, you will learn the history of the island, the formation of the Victoria Falls, while surrounded by breathtaking views of the landscape and Zambezi River, and the waterfalls pounding into the gorge below. Your guide will take you to the edge of the island where David Livingstone stood in awe of the massive chasm and the majesty of the falls for the first time, and named them Victoria Falls - after Queen Victoria.

Tongabezi limit the daily total number of visitors to 120, with a maximum of 24 people for each Livingstone Island tour. This is to limit the human impact on the World Heritage Site. It is advisable that bookings for this trip are made in advance (send us a booking enquiry to book your trip).

The Tree House, Tongabezi, Livingstone & The Victoria Falls

The River Cottages have an African style with high ceilings, stone floors and large windows facing the water. They feature spacious bedrooms and en suite bathrooms with clawfoot baths, as well as their own entrance porch with seating and colorful cushions.

The individually-styled houses differ in size, with the two bedroom Garden House and Dog House offering ample space and amenities for families, including private plunge pools. The Tree House enjoys a secluded location among the branches of an ebony tree with excellent river views, while the Nut House has folding doors opening out to a private garden and plunge pool.

The lodge enjoys a scenic position on the banks of the Zambezi River, around 30 minutes upstream from Victoria Falls and several kilometers northwest of Livingstone. The area affords a variety of activities, from bush walks and boat trips to game drives and hikes.

Food and drink

Guests can dine around the large communal dining table, out on the deck beside the river or on their private terrace. Alternatively, the relaxing Lookout makes for a more exclusive dining experience, with guests able to book a whole floor if they wish. The menu is regularly updated according to the seasonal produce grown in the property’s vegetable and herb gardens and fruit orchard to ensure fresh, tasty dishes.

Children aged seven and over are welcome to stay at Tongabezi, with rollaway beds and extra mosquito nets provided and a number of larger accommodation options available. A children’s menu is available and food can be served at preferred meal times. A variety of child-friendly activities are offered, from tracking animals to playing games with local children in nearby Tujatane, drumming sessions around the campfire and African treasure hunts.

Honeymooners

Tongabezi has a Honeymoon House featuring a private balcony overlooking the river, providing a romantic setting for a candlelit dinner. Couples can also enjoy romantic dinners floating on a sampan in the river, with each course delivered by canoe. Alternatively, book a meal in The Lookout, which offers privacy and peaceful river views.

Facilities and activities

Activities include visits to Victoria Falls, canoeing on the river and trips to Tujatane Village for an insight into local life. A trip to Livingstone Island, on the edge of Victoria Falls, is recommended; you’ll be taken by boat and given a brief history tour before swimming across the channel, crossing a rocky outcrop and jumping into a rock pool right next to the main flow of water — a spectacular sight and sound as the water cascades over the rocks.

Environmental and social responsibility

Tongabezi helped to establish and still supports Tujatane Trust School, which since 1996 has grown from teaching 15 to around 250 students. It also helps to fund housing for local teachers.

Staff at the property are involved in the Aids Council of Zambia to raise awareness and break the silence over the disease.

To protect the environment, solar power is used for lighting, water is recycled for irrigation and wood is sourced from sustainable forests.
