Board your overnight flight to Athens today.

Welcome to Greece! Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner tonight, served with beer or wine.

Nothing can prepare you for the sheer sense of awe you’ll feel when you come face-to-face with Athens—where ancient architecture and artifacts coexist with modern life. Meet up with your dedicated local guide, who will introduce you to the highlights of this bustling capital.

  • Pass by the Panathenaic Stadium, built entirely out of marble—the only such stadium in the world.
  • Continue to Syntagma Square—home to the neoclassical Greek Parliament building—and admire the plaza’s imposing marble steps, fountain, and lush shade trees.
  • Admire the Arch of Hadrian—built to honor the Roman emperor—and imagine how its Pentelic marble stones were carted more than 11 miles from Mount Pentelikon in 131 A.D.
  • View the remains of the sixth-century Temple of Zeus and gaze up at its 16 ornate Corinthian columns.
  • Drive through Plaka. Situated at the foot of the Acropolis, this district is one of the oldest parts of Athens and is known as “the Neighborhood of the Gods” due to the dozens of monuments strewn throughout it.
  • Set off on a walking tour around the ancient Acropolis—site of the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion. You may have seen these enduring icons of antiquity in books and films; now, you’re stepping through the work of craftsmen who quarried and honed these marble blocks thousands of years ago.

Opt into the excursion to Cape Sounion today, where the remains of the Temple of Poseidon—dedicated to the Greek god of the sea—offer a perfect vantage point over panoramic views of the Aegean and its island chains.

Alternatively, you can also use your free afternoon in Athens to explore on your own. Head back to the Plaka district or wander through Anafiotika on the northeast slope of the Acropolis. The latter neighborhood dates to the 19th century and is chock-full of charming, whitewashed cottages and vibrantly hued doors, the likes of which you might have seen—or will see soon—on Greece’s Cyclades islands.

Today, opt into an excursion steeped in mythology—a guided tour of the ancient archaeological site of Delphi. Succumb to the mystical ambiance that has captivated visitors for decades as you discover tales of the Oracle of Delphi, who was believed to deliver prophecies from her seat in the now-ruined Temple of Apollo. From the slopes of Mount Parnassus, you’ll also have unfettered views of olive groves, rugged mountains, and the Gulf of Corinth.

Prefer to continue your Athenian adventure on your own? Use your free day in Athens to stroll through Monastiraki, a historic neighborhood anchored by a famous flea market. Navigate its packed streets and see if you can spot any of its Greco-Roman ruins.

We’re off to the islands! Travel by ferry to Mykonos and join your Tour Director on a walk through Mykonos Town’s labyrinthian streets, bursting with cafes, galleries, and shops.

  • See the iconic white windmills of Mykonos Town—built as early as the 16th century and originally used to mill wheat and barley—and watch their thatched roofs dance in the sea breeze.
  • Delight in Little Venice—perched right alongside the Aegean and inspired by its Italian namesake—where colorful, sun-splashed residences seem to melt into the water, their balconies hanging over the sea.
  • Pass the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, eminently photographed for its Byzantine-era, whitewashed facade and intriguing curves.

Sit down this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Choose to spend your free day on Mykonos with a hands-on cooking demonstration. You won’t just get to nibble and sip your way through fresh local fare—you’ll also learn how to make Greek staples like tzatziki yourself. What better way to prolong the magic of your trip than by whipping up a tasty memory at home?

Not joining the excursion? Use your free day in Mykonos to hit the cobblestones. If visiting the island’s famous beach clubs isn’t your speed, head back to Little Venice for a stroll along the Old Harbor; hike down to Armenistis Lighthouse, one of the oldest in Greece; or get lost in Matogianni Street’s shops and galleries and surrender to the soft, salty air on The Island of the Winds.

Want to add another Greek island to your list? Add an excursion to legendary Delos for a guided tour of this mostly uninhabited island’s remarkably preserved ruins, sanctuaries, and markets. Peer into its cosmopolitan past and importance as a cultural hub. If history isn’t your thing, Delos’s patch of the Aegean Sea gives you glimpses of scenic coastlines and neighboring islands.

You can also use your free day on Mykonos to hop between the island’s renowned beaches. Relax on golden sands, swim in crystalline waters, or snorkel until you’ve worked up an appetite. Be sure to ask your Tour Director for suggestions on hidden gems and seasonal treats.

Please note: The excursion to Delos will run in the morning only during April and October and may run in the morning or afternoon from May to September.

Delos Cruise & Temple of Apollo

You’ve seen the photos—now get ready to star in them yourself. Take a ferry to Santorini and enjoy a free afternoon on the island. You can admire the steep cliffs that plunge into the Aegean and the island’s iconic caldera, dotted with whitewashed buildings. Then, eat your way through traditional dishes—like moussaka, a hearty eggplant dish, or tomato fritters—then use your free time to explore unique pebbly beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Your guided tour of Santorini will take you from dramatic black-sand beaches to jagged cliff-lined shores and back—a stark contrast to the island’s beloved, blue-domed buildings and sprays of bright fuchsia bougainvillea vines.

  • Visit the archaeological excavations at Akrotiri, a settlement buried in volcanic ash, where richly pigmented Bronze Age frescoes and other Minoan artifacts survived a devastating volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C.
  • Ride to the top of Mount Profitis Ilias for panoramic views of Santorini, neighboring island chains, and the blue waters kissing the horizon.
  • Stop in small, picturesque Pyrgos, where you’ll weave through the steep streets of this off-the-beaten-path village.

Choose to hop on a catamaran for a steal-your-breath-away dinner cruise starring the cliffside village of Oia—Santorini’s calling card. You can also spend your free afternoon poking around authentic shops and sampling the local wine if you’re craving time to explore on your own.

Santorini Caldera Cruise & Dinner

From $149 per person

Santorini’s nutrient-rich soil lends itself perfectly to growing wine grapes. Get to know the island’s unique vineyards when you choose to join the excursion to a local winery, complete with a tasting and accompanying lunch.

Prefer to spend the day on your own? You can sample even more traditional plates—like octopus or spanakopita—then explore the unique, black-pebbled shores and clear waters of Kamari Beach. End the day with a sunset stop at the lighthouse found on the southern tip of the island.

Please note: For an additional cost, you can book a visit to the village of Oia through your Tour Director. The visit will either take place on the evening of day 10 or the morning of day 11, depending on the ferry schedule.

Greek Wine Tasting & Lunch

From $89 per person

Take a ferry to Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, this afternoon. The birthplace of the ancient Minoan civilization, Crete served as the backdrop for the mythical tales of King Minos, the labyrinth, and the Minotaur. Remnants of Minoan civilization can be found across the island, punctuating a diverse landscape that ranges from lush valleys and dramatic gorges to looming mountains and serene beaches.

Expect to be embraced by the locals’ friendliness—perhaps alongside a shot of raki, a strong digestif made of distilled grape skins that’s offered as a sign of hospitality.

Looking to uncover centuries of cultural diversity? Choose to join the excursion to Chania, a coastal city on Crete’s northwestern shore that has passed between Greek, Venetian, and Ottoman hands through the years. Embark on a walking tour of Chania’s Old Town, a historic quarter tinged by Venetian heritage that also happens to boast a thriving Jewish community.

You can also use your free day to enjoy Cretan cuisine—grilled seafood and local cheeses like mizithra—at one of the island’s many seaside tavernas or stroll along the warm sands of a beach (or three).

tour grecia mykonos santorini

Board your bus and cruise past Crete’s olive-covered terrain en route to Heraklion—an ancient port town that was once the hub of the Minoans, Europe’s first civilization. Here, you’ll set off on a guided tour.

  • Visit the ruins of the Bronze Age palace of Knossos. Part administrative center, part place of worship, it held a special place at the heart of Minoan culture (and was where, according to legend, King Minos imprisoned the Minotaur in the heart of a labyrinth).
  • See the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home of the world’s preeminent collection of Minoan art and many artifacts taken from the excavation of Knossos and other dig sites around Crete.

Afterward, fly to Athens and celebrate your trip with your group at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your stay to continue exploring Athens. With a history spanning more than 3,400 years, we know you’ll want more time to delve into the Greek capital’s ever-evolving cultural landscape. And if you’re just craving another plateful of syrupy, sweet fried dough—those pillowy loukoumades—we’re right there with you.

Athens has no shortage of incredible restaurants serving Greek and international fare, but there’s nothing like a home-cooked meal with friends and soon-to-be friends. Opt into the dinner excursion tonight and break bread with your local host.

You can also spend your first day in Athens scoping out the National Garden, a serene, green expanse in the heart of the city with ponds and shady paths that cross through ancient ruins. For a less crowded panorama of Athens, head to Mount Lycabettus, where you can hike or take the funicular railway to the top of the hill. Be sure to ask your Tour Director for their recommendations, too!

Athens Home-Hosted Dinner

From $79 per person

It’s your last full day in Athens; let’s make the most of it. Join the optional (but highly recommended) visit to the Corinth Canal. This narrow waterway connects the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf and was an important navigational route upon its opening in 1893. While it’s too narrow for modern vessels, its steep limestone walls provide a scenic contrast to the aquamarine waters below. You’ll then continue to the archaeological sites at Epidaurus and Mycenae to walk along some of the best-preserved ancient sites in Greece.

If you choose to spend your free day venturing out on your own, why not take in some of the city’s street art? Wander through neighborhoods like Exarchia or Psiri and check out their colorful graffiti up close. Looking for another vantage point to admire Athens? Head to the Pnyx, a hill where ancient Athenians gathered for assemblies. You’ll get views and a tranquil atmosphere.

Tonight, gather with your fellow travelers to enjoy a farewell drink.

3 Day Mykonos and Santorini Islands

Mykonos Island certainly is the most cosmopolitan among the Cyclades and the most touristic island in the Eastern Mediterranean something which does not happen by chance.

Expect to experience the exquisite visuals of white-washed houses with blue windows, proud windmills, a multitude of chapels, busy back streets with balconies full of flowers and a multicolored fleet of fishing boats at the port.

Santorini Island is without any doubt one of the most Unique and Unforgettable Islands! This former volcanic island has breathtaking views from the caldera whilst also boasting the white sand beach, the red sand beach and the black sand beach!

Brace yourself for fabulous Santorini Island! Regarded by many as the most spectacular of the Greek islands.

What to Expect – Itinerary :

This a package to Mykonos and Santorini Islands. Mykonos beaches a must to experience: Platy Gialos, Psarou, Ornos, Paranga “Paradise” (Kalamopodi), “Super Paradise” (Blintri), Elia, Kalafati, Kalo Livadi, and Lia. On Mykonos western shore are Agios Stefanos, Houlakia, Tourlos, Megali-Ammos and Agios Yannis (opposite Delos).

If you’re after a bit of history and culture, the island has five museums you can visit as well as a beautiful church. The church of Panagia Paraportiani is located beyond the Delos Ferry Quay on the way to Little Venice.

Just off Mykonos island is the sacred island of Delos. Delos island is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, and certainly the most important in the Cyclades. Ferries depart from the Old Jetty at the western end of the harbor and can be booked directly.

This was a special trip for us to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and I wanted to have a stress-free experience. We chose their "Greece and Italy Delight A" package and from the beginning Panos was very helpful, informative and quickly responded to all my questions and requests. The package included all transfers and many extras like local tours. It does cost more than doing all that on your own, but it was worth it to us not having to deal with all those details. We particularly enjoyed the cruise on the Greek-owned Celestyal Olympia because it was a smaller ship and because of the excellent service they provided. The hotels included in the package were 4-star and we found them to be very nice - especially the Orama hotel in Santorini (for which Panos provided us a free room upgrade). All reservations, transfers and tours were on time and as expected and advertised. Based on our experience I can sincerely say that if you are interested in a package vacation to Greece and Italy, I can highly recommend Kivotos Travel - a 5-star rating! We had used his services 7 yrs ago to Greece & Turkey and our family of four loved every bit of it. This time round we did 3 different countries Croatia, Italy and Turkey and he didn’t disappoint. He looked after every single detail and was very prompt with changes and requests. Right from the airport transfers to the luxe services he provides every thing is seamless and top notch. His expertise is unmatched. We will not hesitate to use his services again in the future. Read more Written November 5, 2023

Told them basically what I thought I wanted and they did the rest. Despina was amazing, tips and tricks on how to see and get around. Accomodation was top notch all arranged by her. Saw everything we thought we wanted to see and beyond. Just a phone call and extras were arranged. Couldn’t get better service anywhere. Read more Written September 22, 2023

  • annmarieb233 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Company to book your Greece vacation with! We had the best time booking through Kivotos of Aegean Travel. I worked exclusively with Panos - who was amazing!! I had originally booked a trip that I had to cancel at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. Panos was super helpful and willing to work with me to cancel this and rebook the trip at a later time. He took care of everything - contacting the hotels, airlines etc. It was a huge help. I finally went on our trip this September 2023 and it was a dream. We hopped around from Athens > Milos > Santorini > Athens. I twas SO nice having drivers and transportation coordinated at every stop - it really made the trip extra relaxing. The hotel selection was AMAZING. Panos was very patient with me - offering me multiple options and helping me compare prices during the booking phase. He also helped organize multiple excursions for us and was available on the fly via WhatsApp while we were traveling. He helped us with reservations while we were there which was great. He also met us at our hotel when we arrived in Athens and took us for a walk around the city/for coffee. Would HIGHLY reccomend booking with this company. It completely took the stress out of planning an international trip away. I plan to use this company again for other future travels! Read more Written September 18, 2023
  • tonytL5047NO 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Honeymoon Trip Through Florence, Rome, Santorini and Mykonos We contacted Kivotos of Aegean after doing some online research and following the good reviews. We were paired with Despina, who was an excellent trip coordinator. My wife and I took a honeymoon trip to Florence, Rome, Santorini, Mykonos and Athens. It was the trip of a lifetime for us. The peace of mind having the most difficult parts of the trip planned for us, and having almost 24hr support in case of any minor mishaps made travelling a breeze and very stress free. The choices of hotels and local tour companies were without question of great value and of excellent service. Highlights? In Florence, the Accademia museum was very memorable, as was our individually planned AirBNB wine tour of the Tuscan country side. It was thrilling to stand among the history in Rome, we planned our own opera experience, and the shopping was great. The sunset catamaran cruise in Santorini was a special, special experience and a day we'll always remember. Actually, Santorini in general was quite exceptional. Mykonos had great restaurants and lots of charm. I loved Athens a lot for its walkability, modern-meets-history feel, and the people. Having Despina be a WhatsApp message away made it easy to check in when there were reasonable delays to our transfers, and she was very helpful every time we checked in. Our tour never felt rushed, and we still managed to find some sleep in and nap time to keep on top of the schedule. Lowlights? Early on in our planning we requested help to book a wine tour, and some sort of live performance, but that didn't appear to be something the company was willing to dive into, and we were instructed not to overbook our stay. So we booked a few extra things ourselves, which probably worked out for the better anyway. Not being over-the-top party people, we didn't necessarily match the vibe or price of Mykonos, and our tour to Delos was hampered by a poor tour guide (just bad luck, I think). I'm glad we went to Mykonos, but don't need to go there again. I wish the tour vouchers we were given had just a bit more information on who we were looking for when we arrived in some places, but that's just a bit nitpick-y. Overall, this is a reputable company that delivered on an incredible experience. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it perfect? No, but it was certainly getting close. But that's travel, and for us this trip was everything we wanted and needed it to be. I would recommend this company, and in all earnestness hope you have as incredible an experience as we did! • 654elissas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beauty, Culture, History, & Cuisine This was our second time using this company to book our trip to Greece. The first was a trip just for my husband and I just after COVID, and we loved our experience so much that we decided to come back again. This time we brought along my parents and our 3 kids. Throughout the entire booking process our agent was amazing. She was very quick with responding back when I had any questions or wanted to make any changes or additions to our trip. Everything was great and we didn’t have to worry about a thing because it was all planned out for us. This includes all of our transfers to and from the airport, hotels, ports and the included excursions. The meals included were good even for the pickiest of eaters. The accommodations that we stayed at were in great locations for shopping, swimming, or site seeing. If there was ever any troubles (which there was not) we had the contact information to get in touch with someone at anytime. Some of the excursions you have included or add will allow you to get to know more of the culture or sites or enjoy the scenery. We stayed in Athens, did a motor coach through Olympia, Delphi, and Meteora, stayed in Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, and ended back in Athens before coming back to the states. We added some excursions to our package which were great, and then we added extra things that were “different” in our own. Like one trip we did a flying dress photo shoot and marble carving. Despite being there 2 and a half weeks both times we went, I feel like I could spend a lifetime there and never get enough of this beautiful country, enriching culture, and delicious food! Best Greek Cooking Class in Mykonos

Teta will show you how to make delicious traditional Greek food in her Mykonos Cooking Class .

The 11 Best Tours & Things To Do in Mykonos 1. Mykonos Cooking Class (Traditional Greek Food) This is an absolutely wonderful Greek cooking class: fun, informative, great food. And the wine flows freely. It lasts a little less than 6 hours and starts at 10am or 4pm with free transfer from your hotel or the cruise port. Highly recommended. If you only do one organized activity in Mykonos, make it this one. (It’s rare for kids to do the class but when they do they have a blast.) 2. Sunset Sailing Cruise Awesome Mykonos boat tour with swimming, food, and unlimited drinks. Lots of swimming and snorkeling. Good fun. 3. Original Morning Delos Guided Tour After a 45-minute boat ride to Delos , explore the ancient island with a fully accredited guide. Delos (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of the best-preserved and most important historical sites in Greece and the best day trip from Mykonos. If you’re interested in visiting Delos, we recommend taking a guided tour; there are loads of ruins, but few signs, so it can be difficult to know what you’re looking at without a guide. 4. Delos & Rhenia Islands Boat Trip Tour the ancient island of Delos (entrance fee not included) then swim, snorkel, and sunbathe from the yacht and along the coast of the uninhabited island of Rhenia. BBQ meal and unlimited drinks included. 5. Catamaran Cruise with 3-Course Meal A super fun way to spend a day out on the water. Lots to eat and drink (and the food is surprisingly good quality). Lie on the deck, swim, snorkel, or sight-see as you make your way around the Mykonos coastline or to the island of Rhenia (depending on win, weather, and guest preference). This one is a little expensive, but worth it for the small group size and luxury service. Note : Both of the previous boat tours get fully booked from late June to early September. If that’s the case, the Full-Day Mykonos Catamaran Cruise is an excellent alternative – it’s a little more expensive but the food is also better. 6. Highlights of Mykonos: Half-Day Tour Starts with a walking tour of Mykonos Town and then visits the best sights, small villages (like Ano Mera above), and small hidden churches all over the island. 7. Mykonos Hiking Adventure This photo is from a helicopter tour I took of Mykonos (awesome but expensive) and I thought the aerial view gave a good overview of the Mykonos landscape. Beautiful beaches backed by rolling countryside with a mix of green farmland and trail-crossed steppes. Which all makes for a great hike. The hike ends with a swim at a beach. Ippos horseback riding is another great way to see the Mykonos countryside. 8. Yummy Pedals Bike Tour Discover the rugged landscape of Mykonos’ interior on a standard bike or e-bike. Offering seven different tour routes to suit all experience levels and varying interests, whether leisure, romance, adventure, or challening. Casual cyclists can enjoy rural back roads, stopping at cultural sites, learning about traditional life, and finishing at the beach for a picnic and underwater photo shoot. More experienced cyclists can opt for a scenic bike ride up the mountain peaks as high as the wind turbines for panoramic views over the island’s north coast. Private, bespoke tours can be arranged on request. 9. Wine and Farm Tour Daily wine tours in English (or French, on request) are on offer at this historic vineyard dating to the 19th-century, when it supplied wine for a local monastery. Guests of this family-owned homestead will learn about biodynamic cultivation and local winemaking customs, while sampling all four types of wines produced onsite. Visit during the fall harvest, and take the opportunity to stomp grapes in the traditional way. Food pairings can be added. This kid-friendly tour also includes visiting and interacting with the farm animals, including donkeys, sheep, and goats. Tours of the farm and vineyard are free; tastings and food pairings are additional. 10. Mosaic Workshop Mosaic artist Irene Syrianou grew up on sacred Delos Island and worked there for ten years, familiarizing herself with the ancient mosaics of the archaeological site while honing her own techniques. In her private and group workshops, she instructs students in replicating the mosaics of antiquity or creating their own modern works. Workshops take place in Manto Garden or in her studio space and can range from an hour or two up to a multi-day seminar. All ages and experience levels welcome. 11. Mykonos Farmers Cheese and Cooking Class Cheesemaking, cheese tasting, and cooking classes are available at this locally-owned dairy in Agios Lazaros, a short drive from Mykonos Town. The dairy makes a variety of regional cheeses only found in Mykonos and the Cyclades, along with more familiar flavors and rich Greek yogurt. Cooking and cheesemaking classes include a tour of the facilities and sampling the wares. Hands-on workshops run for about two hours and are open to beginning and advanced cooks, ages 14 and older.

The Best Free Thing To Do in Mykonos Mykonos Beach Walk Walk from Platis Gialos Beach to Paradise Beach , making stops at beach bars and restaurants along the way. You’ll pass Agia Anna and Paraga beaches and several other small swimming coves. Super fun and free! (Besides what you spend on food and drinks, of course.) If you’re staying in Mykonos Town, take the bus to Platis Gialos and then start walking along the beach towards the east (if you’re facing the water, walk to your left). There are several great places to eat along the walk. If you hike straight to Paradise Beach it will take about an hour (without stops). Then bus back from Paradise to Mykonos Town or take the water taxi back to Platis Gialos or Ornos (my personal favorite).

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave Author Bio.

Hi Dave! Loving this blog! I have a question about the Mykonos beach walk – we’re very interested in stopping along the way as you suggest but wondering what that’s like summer of 2021 specifically when everywhere is reservations only. Is that true of even just grabbing a drink along the walk? And if so and you had to choose only one to reserve and stay at – which one or which area would it be? We’re not getting much response when messaging the beach clubs directly. Thanks!

' src=

Reservations are strongly recommended at least during July/August and a pretty good idea in June/early September. It’s incredibly busy this season pretty much everywhere in the Cyclades, but even in June and early September, it can be hard to get a sunbed/umbrella set at the better beach clubs. But if you’re only going to drink and don’t need a lounge set, then it’s all good. You can get a drink pretty much anywhere no matter how busy, and just lay your towel out on the sand. Especially this year, you can get cocktails to go from almost all bars and restaurants on the island.

' src=

Hello Dave, since you have been to both Mykonos and Santorini where would you recommend doing a boat tour more? I don’t want to do a boat tour in both cities. I will be spending 5 days in each and am worried there will be less to do in Santorini–is it better to do a boat tour there? Mykonos seems like there will be a lot more partying/beaches to enjoy. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks!

A Santorini boat tour will be far more unique and awe-inspiring with the views of the caldera and cliffs. In Mykonos it will be more fun and relaxing. But not sure I agree with your premise: Santorini has far more to do than Mykonos – wine tours and wineries, hikes, historical sites, museums, volcano visits, jet ski tours. Mykonos has the beach and nightlife (which are great) and not much else.

' src=

The “Small Yacht Cruise to Delos & Rhenia Islands” appears to not be taking reservations due to availability (I wasn’t even able to put in my dates, seems to be a blanket statement on their site.) Other than the two you also suggest on this page, is there another similiar tour to this one that you’d recommend? I’m going with my mother (in her 60s) and my 8yo daughter – in case that makes a difference in what you recommend.

You’re probably just a little too early. Most tours should be online and ready to book by late January or early February.

' src=

Do you know of a good scuba diving course/tour in Mykonos for beginners/intermediate? We would like to visit the best scuba dive spots around Mykonos for a reasonable price.

Mykonos PADI Scuba Diving does a two-hour scuba course in Mykonos .

' src=

Are the paths etc okay for wheelchairs?

If you mean the paths along the coast between the beaches, then no, I wouldn’t say they’re wheelchair-accessible. If you mean the lanes and alleys of Mykonos Town, then yes, I think they should be “ok” for travelers in wheelchairs (though not ideal by any means).

' src=

Hello. If my daughter and I do the Mykonos cooking class, do you have any ideas for my adult son and husband? I’m also wondering if they would be able to pay and join us for lunch? Thank you for your expert advice!

They could do the tour to Delos. Or, if not a tour, walk from Psarou to Paradise Beach along the coast.

Thanks for your website, such great info. We were planning on having a 6-day Honeymoon, taking in 3 days in Santorini & 3 in Mykonos (Town). We were hoping to go in September but due to personal circumstances that are no longer possible, so we would be looking at something like the 10th to 16th of October. I am concerned though that this will be too late in the season, & we’ll struggle for restaurants & bars, especially in Mykonos.

Can you advise if we will struggle for eating & drinking at this time? We obviously don’t expect it to be full-on party mode but would like some sort of vibe for going out & having a couple of drinks at night (or even places that are at least open).

Santorini will be busy and active, with everything open – no problem there. Mykonos will be slower for sure. A few places will have started to close for the winter but most will be open. Nightlife will be subdued but there’ll definitely be places open to go for a drink and encounter some other travelers. There will definitely be plenty of open restaurants – so I would not worry on that front.

What is the best way to get to Santorini from Mykonos? Just want a day of exploring? There were no available flights during the time we are there to fly there and back.

Ferry is the best way to get to Santorini from Mykonos. There are many ferries every day in summer. But it’s very hard, if not impossible, to do it as a day trip. You’ll need to stay overnight.

Hi Dave, We have rented a villa near Mykonos town. Most transportation mentioned is a bus or boat, is it reasonable to expect taxi service? Thank You!

Yes, there are taxis but not a lot. During busy times it can be very hard to secure a taxi.

' src=

Hi Dave, What are your thoughts on boat tours around Mykonos being really rocky due to the winds? I’ve read on other sites that the waters can be very rough and Tours will often go out despite rough seas. Only have 3.5 days in Mykonos so I’m nervous to gamble with a boat tour that could ruin a day. Love your cooking class recommendation, just having a hard time getting my fiancé onboard with that. Thanks in advance!

Yes, the waters can get rough. Not much you can do about that except hope for the best. The cooking class is great fun.

' src=

Tipping, how does this work for a tour? If we booked the 6 hours BBQ catamaran tour per couple it would come to $491, should we tip 20% ~$100?

Thanks! Kelly

Yeah, if that’s in your budget then that’s great. Tourism workers in Greece make very little so it would be appreciated.

' src=

Hi Dave – Is it warm enough to swim at the end of April / beginning of May?

Water will be cool but if the weather’s nice, yes, people will be hopping in for brief plunges in the sea. By mid/late May it’s usually much warmer for swimming.

' src=

Cooking Class in Mykonos, do you know if they are able to accommodate vegetarians? Amit

Yes, definitely. Many of the best Greek dishes are vegetarian. I’d drop them a note (in reply to the confirmation email that you’ll get) a few days before your date telling them you’re vegetarian but won’t make much difference in either case.

' src=

Thanks Dave! Why is it that you prefer renting a car over an ATV?

It’s safer. It’s more comfortable. You can talk to each other instead of yelling over the wind. But just my preference, your experience may differ.

My husband and I will be in Mykonos and Santorini at the end of August. We definitely want to get some ATV’s and do some exploring on our own. Do you have any suggestions for places we should rent from on both islands? Is it necessary to book these in advance of our trip?

No need to book ATVs in advance. Where to get them depends on the town you’re staying in but there should be a service/company nearby that can arrange something. BTW, I much prefer renting a car but that’s up to you.

' src=

My family together with my sister’s have booked a 10 day trip to Mykonos mid August. I’m slightly annoyed at my sloppy planning and regret not booking a few days first in santorini. There do not appear to be any day trips there from Mykonos unless the ferry companies have different schedules during the summer months? Do you have any fun suggestions during our stay? Our kids ages range from 22-13. Helen Pope

The cooking course (see above) and boat tours to Delos or Rhenia islands are at the top of the list. I would consider taking an overnight trip to Santorini. Keep your hotel in Mykonos and just take a small backpack or two. Stay at a cheap hotel in Fira and you’ll get 30 hours to explore Santorini. You are wasting the one night hotel in Mykonos but a lot cheaper than the plane tickets to get back to Santorini on a different trip.

' src=

Can you recommend the best transportation to get from Athens airport to Athens Diamond homtel at 9:00pm and returning to the airport to catch a flight at 7:00 am.

The easiest is a taxi. The cheapest is the metro (you’ll want the Monastiraki station which is about a 5 to 8 minute walk from your hotel). But for your morning flight you’ll need to take a taxi (or the airport bus from Syntagma Square) as the metro won’t be running in time to make your flight.

' src=

Your restaurant recommendations for Santorini were very helpful. I went to several of your recommended restaurants and they were great. I am going to Mykonos in 2 days. Any restaurant recommendations for Mykonos? Thank you!! Karl Smith

I have a list of the best Mykonos restaurants on my Mykonos hotel page .

We would be spending about 3.5 days in Mykonos late May. We are considering the Jeep tour and South Coast cruise. Is it worth it to go for 2 full day tours or choose one? Which and what would you recommend?

Thank you! Perrine

They are very different (one on a boat, one in a jeep) and have little or no overlap. Doing both is reasonable. If I could only do one, it would the south coast boat cruise.

Hi Dave~ your site is a wealth of information! My husband and I are flying into Athens 6/25-7/2. Per your suggestion we will spend the first few nights at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Need to ferry over to Mykonos for a work meeting for a few days. After researching, I was thinking of ferrying over from Piraeus and back into Rafina since it is closer to the airport. I’m a little nervous that the earliest ferry back on 7/2 is at 11:40. We have a 5:30 flight the same day. Is that cutting it close? Weather/strikes etc.. I would hate to miss our departure home. We could come back the eve of 7/1 and spend one additional night in Athens (shortening MYK by a little bit) to give us wiggle room. If so, should we stay somewhere closer to the airport to get a different vibe? Or would you go back into Athens and head to the airport the next day. Or do you think we are OK on that 11:40- 14:15 ferry? Would love to know how you wold handle getting back to mainland, your input. Shaun Hammons

That connection time would be too tight for my tastes. Could you make? Yes, certainly. But it doesn’t take much for a SeaJet ferry to be late by 90 minutes and that’s all it would take for you to miss your flight. I would ferry to Piraeus the night before and stay somewhere in the Plaka for a final night (lots of great places to eat in the area). There is nothing out by the airport so definitely do not stay there as you’ll almost have an evening and a good half-day to see and do stuff in Athens. (Or you can fly from Mykonos to Athens and have an extra night in Mykonos – there are afternoon flights that get to Athens at 12:25pm or 3:10pm.)

What is the best tour of Mykonos Town? Is it worth taking a tour or can we explore Mykonos Town on our own?

It’s easy to walk around Mykonos Town on your own and see the sights – but a tour always offer a different level of understanding and history. People almost never regret taking a tour and I highly recommended them. The Mykonos Town and Island Tour goes through Mykonos Town and Ano Mera (the second largest village on Mykonos) as well as a few other stops. It’s well worth the 4 hours.

' src=

Hey Dave, I am going to be visiting in mid may. We have kept 4 days in Mykonos. Any suggestions on a day trip to islands nearby?

Delos (greek history) and Rhenia (beaches and swimming) are the two best day trips from Mykonos. The bigger islands (Naxos, Paros, Santorini) are difficult to make work for a day trip – especially in May when ferries are not as frequent as summer.

' src=

Hi Dave, Do you recommend booking at boat tour in Mykonos ahead of time? We will be in Mykonos for four days during the middle of May. Thank you! Alex

If you’re on the fence then wait and see if that’s how you want to spend your time once you’re on the island. If you’re certain there’s something you want to do (e.g. Delos) then book as early as possible.

' src=

Hi Dave, I have found your website so helpful for planning our upcoming trip. It seems that the link for the “Full day small yacht cruise to Rhenia Island” on the Mykonos day tours page is not working. Could you direct me to that tour?

Thanks so much! Megan Reese

I fixed the link. Thanks!

Your sharing have indeed been so helpful towards my planning to Greece. I will be travelling at the end of October. Due to my limited travelling time, I would like to catch the best of all in Greece.

Between Mykonos, Crete, & Zakynthos, which is best? Which will be a better choice? I intend to stay 2 nights in either one of the above.

Mykonos and Crete are the best choices. Mykonos is small and thus the best choice for a quick 2 night trip. But, it will be very quiet by the end of October. Not quite “completely dead” but not lively by any stretch. Chania on Crete will still have plenty going on and has a great array of restaurants that should all still be open. It doesn’t quite give the idyllic greek-island feel as it’s a medium-sized town on a large island – but it’s great nonetheless.

Do you need to do a tour to get to the best Mykonos Beaches (quiet and secluded beaches) or just rent a car and do a self-tour?

To get to the quiet and remote ones, yes, a tour is good – and a boat tour better. But for the most popular ones close to Mykonos Town a rental car is fine for getting around. In fact, bus is the best as you can take it to Psarou or Platys Gialos then walk to Paranga and Paradise beaches along a coastal path that is both beautiful and dotted with little swimming spots. The tours are fun though.

Santorini or Mykonos? Pros and cons of each and how to visit both Greek islands

tour grecia mykonos santorini

Greece is truly a once-in-a-lifetime type of destination. And oh yes, everyone knows about its beauty so it will certainly be swarmed with tourists, especially on islands like Santorini or Mykonos. If you’re one of those travelers that feel bothered by visiting popular places like this one or Paris , this will certainly not be the destination for you.

Most often when people visit Greece, they do so with the goal of visiting at least one of the Greek islands. Having been to both, I can tell you that they are very different and there are pros and cons to visiting each. With this awesome guide and itinerary, I hope to help you decide whether to visit Santorini or Mykonos or even both! Before you start with the Greek islands though, if you’re flying into Athens, don’t forget to check out my awesome Athens guide too.

There is a lot of information ahead for you. In this extensive guide for visiting Santorini and/or Mykonos you will find:

  • Some essentials logistics: You’ll get the info on transport, where to stay, food, expectations, and general advice for each Greek island.
  • Things to do : Top places actually worth your time and which are overrated like the Red Beach in Santorini for example.
  • Downloadable free itineraries for each destination : Why worry about planning if I already planned it for you 🙂 You can print them and your entire trip will be planned.

I always make my itineraries after I visit a destination and optimize them for you based on things I wish I knew or have done differently. No need to make the same mistakes twice! My guides are also best for short and active trips!

Quick logistics of visiting Santorini and Mykonos

General itinerary for santorini & mykonos.

In case you already know that you want to see both islands, it really doesn’t really matter which order you visit these in but the route below might be more convenient for the least amount of time dedicated to transport. There are so many connections available simply depending on your outbound destinations. Each island has a ferry port as well as an airport. There are flights in and out from all the major European airports and ferries from other Greek cities. For your reference, this was my plan:

  • Flight into Athens with a 2-day stay – See my full Athens guide here and why I wish I stayed much longer! (I recommend at least 3 days instead)
  • Speed ferry (5ish hours) from Athens to Santorini – 4 days on the island
  • Speed ferry (2ish hours) from Santorini to Mykonos – 3 days on the island
  • Flight out from Mykonos to my next destination

Aside from Athens, I was happy with my length of stay on each island so I’d say the ideal time is a 7-day itinerary for Santorini and Mykonos if you’re seeing both.

Best time to visit Santorini or Mykonos

The best time to visit either island is obviously in the summer but expect that time to be pricey and crowded. Visiting between June to August will be the most crowded so if that’s something that could bother you, I suggest the shoulder season in May or September. Keep in mind that any Greek islands are highly seasonal so visiting off-season might restrict you from all the activities. If you’re planning to swim, know that Greek island water is not like the Caribbean island ones with year-round warm waters. The sea is quick to cool in spring and fall.

Getting to Santorini and Mykonos

Reaching either Santorini or Mykonos can be either done via plane or a ferry depending on your origin. The boats can get expensive in the summer, especially the ones with better travel times and faster speeds. Book ahead to secure your spot, pack a motion sickness pill and enjoy a nice nap on the ferry. Note that not all boats are direct so don’t get off at the wrong Greek island 🙂

There are a couple of ferry companies like Blue Star Ferries, or Seajets , which I’d say offer more or less of the same service. Pick one that suits your times best. I also took the speed boat from Athens which at the time of my summer visit cost around 70 euros. I chose a “fast” 5-hour ride compared to the 8+ hour on the cheaper boat. It was a comfortable ride that I slept through after a night of partying in Athens. Make sure to arrive early at the port because as a first-timer, it might be as intuitive to get around.

At the time of my visit, the boat was cheaper than the flight so I opted for it to save some money. Most of the flight connections are out of Athens so make sure to check the routes and prices too.

Travel on the Greek islands

car rental in santorini

Both islands are pretty small and can be covered in a couple of days. When you get to either Santorini or Mykonos, I strongly recommend renting a car. This will be the first thing people offer you when you arrive at the port. I ended up paying 90 euros for a 3-day rental with insurance in Santorini. I got lucky without pre-booking, but it might be in your best interest to book ahead instead . When renting from these unofficial vendors, always use your travel credit card for the booking for the extra insurance protection it offers. I strongly recommend getting a car to get the most out of the island and have a lot of flexibility with your own schedule.

In Santorini, public transport is widely available but it is slow, not frequent and you will spend a lot of time being restricted by the bus schedules. Note that the roads are borderline dangerous at times with all the twists, turns, and fast drivers but if you’re a mindful driver, you’ll have nothing to worry about. With a car, you will be able to see all the major stops and cover the whole island in a couple of hours if you wanted to. You can easily plan your day trips around the islands.

In Mykonos, I used public transport to get around and although I was content, I regret not renting something to cover more land. The buses are crowded and not often reliable in terms of timing but if you’re on island time, does it really matter what time the bus comes?

Another popular option on the Greek islands is renting ATVs and getting around that way. It’s not a bad option but it will cost you about the same as a car, it’s not as fast and a little less safe.

People & Safety in Greece

I remember very few locals from both islands since it was mostly filled with tourists. My favorite interaction was with one of the waiters in a restaurant in Mykonos that we returned to a couple of times because we loved the food there. He actually got to interact with us and it was nice to get this small immersion on an island full of foreigners. In town, shop owners were very nice but due to the volume of people there, it was hard to actually get to talk to anyone.

Overall both islands are considered safe. Even at night as a girl, I did not feel unsafe or threatened. In Mykonos though, as in any heavy party atmosphere, beware of leaving your drink unattended, and don’t carry valuables with you when going out. The heavy party component of the island is probably your biggest threat. Beware of fake drugs and don’t go too hard.

In the most crowded places like Oia, Santorini, you will find occasional pickpockets like in any other touristy place in the world. People are very nice but use common sense if you’re finding some locals/tourists a little too friendly. Remember not to leave valuables in the car when you park in public parking lots! It’s a common occurrence for thieves to watch tourists parking in lots and leaving their purses and backpacks in their rented cars. The best crimes happen in plain sight ( like on my Tenerife trip with a serious car rental break-in ) so don’t assume your things will be safe even on the most crowded street.

Food in Santorini and Mykonos

I dream about fresh and authentic Greek food. Seriously, it is probably one of the best memories of being there. Although there are some tourist traps, most of the places serve very fresh ingredients.

In Mykonos, the food was great, especially in town at the outdoor restaurants. I really enjoyed the seafood there and pretty much everything else I ate during that stay. The variety is endless and it really depends on your budget and how well you want to dine. One thing to consider is that prices are not budget travel friendly so always check the menu before you get yourself a 40-euro octopus, like me. Drinking is part of the fun on this island. It is a heavy party spot so prepare to sleep in after a night full of 15-euro vodka clubs on the Mykonos beaches.

In Santorini, the hotel I stayed at (Sea View) had the best little restaurants that would serve delicious fresh seafood, those Greek appetizers we always crave, and some amazing meats. A lot of beachfront hotels serve you food to your lounging chair which makes the stay even more relaxing. Drinking on the island is great. Don’t be afraid of the good old table wine which is cheap and actually amazing. Places for those types of activities are so abundant, that you will never have any trouble finding any. This blog has a great Santorini restaurant guide so if you’re a foodie looking for the next best spot, make sure to check them out.

So now that you have the basics, let’s dive deeper into the highlights of Santorini and Mykonos to help you decide which you’d like to see.

Santorini Guide

Suggested length of stay in santorini.

Santorini has that island pace of life which is usually a lot slower than our rushed in-land life. Whenever I visit islands, I keep that in mind and also account for the extra time needed to absorb everything it has to offer. Santorini deserves at least 3 to 4 days of your attention and an absolute minimum of two. It’s certainly much more chill in my opinion and this is where you’ll want that extra lounge time.

Santorini Hotels

There are SO many options for your stay in Santorini. I personally always start looking at hostels as they provide the most social opportunities and awesome activities if you choose a good one. When first exploring the Santorini options, the couple available hostels did not seem to provide that and they seemed extremely expensive for what they offered. Traveling with two friends, we opted out for a hotel stay instead. If that has changed since my visit, please comment below with some recommendations for other fellow explorers.

Hotels are abundant so choose one based on your budget and preferred area of stay. The Caldera view of the inner “moon” of the island is mostly rocky and city-like, housing the most famous villages you’ve seen in photos like Fira and Oia . This is also the spot for the famous sunset. When going on a honeymoon or another special occasion, this is a place worth splurging on. You will find the cave apartments with infinity pools here but it won’t be cheap.

The other side over by Perissa is more beachy and offers more flat and less crowded sea views. The black sand beaches are just as stunning and being located right on the beach is extremely relaxing. This is where I stayed at Sea View hotel and I was happy to be far away from the crowds. The hotels there are also prettier in my opinion.

Sightseeing Options in Santorini

Honestly, I would be lying if I told you that there is a lot to do in Santorini. Any guide you look at repeats the same couple of options over and over. Let me make your life easier and just summarize a typical Santorini path:

  • You visit the touristy villages to get those amazing white house shots
  • Then you relax on one of the many stunning beaches
  • Obviously, you drink and eat a ton of the most amazing Greek food
  • Maybe get your butt on a boat around the island
  • Oh and how can I forget, the SUNSET – honestly worth the hype though

Although the options are kinda slim, each of the things is meant to be enjoyed for hours if not days, and not just quickly checked off your Santorini list. They can be repeated as well without necessarily getting sick of them. Most of my trips are very dense in terms of exploring and doing things, so visiting Santorini and allowing myself to take a break from it all, was the best choice I made during that trip.

DSC01092 Greece

Perfect Things To Do In Santorini

It might appear that this island isn’t full of things to do, but each of the stops I mention deserves a decent amount of time to spend time in. So enjoy it, don’t rush, and soak in the beauty of this amazing place.

Visit the villages of Oia and Fira

Oia and Fira are famous villages on the caldera side of the island that you see in all the Santorini photos. They’re known for those amazing little streets with crazy views, restaurants, bars, and little shops. And yes, as you might have already guessed, they are also the most crowded places on the island.

Especially in peak season, it will be difficult to walk through the narrow streets. It’s not ideal but if you can stand the crowds, you will eventually find a moment of peace. Pick one day where you’ll commit to exploring Oia and/or Fira and mentally prepare not to be annoyed at the crowds.

DSC01019 Greece

Now while the people will make the experience less than ideal, the views and sights will certainly make up for that inconvenience. When I first reached those viewpoints, I was in awe and couldn’t believe how beautiful those surroundings were. It’s just such a unique sight, especially for someone who grew up and lives in New Jersey …

DSC00986 Greece

Most people choose these two locations to watch the sunset. I recommend stationing yourself at a restaurant in that area, that offers those magical sunset views but doesn’t come with the crowds that gather in the streets.

Enjoy the sunset from one of the island’s wineries

Santo Winery is simply stunning. It has gotten extremely popular in the past few years, so make sure to make a reservation a couple of days ahead to get better seating for the sunset. It is a little pricey but the wines and snacks are delicious and the views are just breathtaking. They often have live music that makes you feel like you have been teleported to a magical land with out-of-this-world views. As famous as it is, I highly recommend it.

DSC01082 Greece

Venetsanos Winery is another amazing place with some sweet sunset views located not that far from Santo. You also have to make a reservation to get a prime spot and entry will cost you. Quality will be top-notch.

Sigalas Domaine does not offer a direct sunset view but here you will focus more on the experience of high-quality wine tasting. It is located in the northern part of the island and might be a good alternative to avoid major crowds.

Wine Tours are also a very popular option for tourists. If you’re staying for a longer period of time, consider doing this activity to see multiple wineries in the area. Santorini Dave has an amazing layout and recommendations for wine tours so make sure to check out his reviews on each.

Enjoy one of Santorini’s stunning beaches

You’ve seen this Red Beach shot on all major travel blogs, websites, and Instagram. You begin to imagine laying on the sand enjoying the red rock and crystal clear waters. Sounds like a dream right? Well …

Ok, let’s get real here. The beach colors are indeed AMAZING from that particular angle. No doubt about that. The actual beach? It’s not great. First, getting there is a pain in the ass. The parking lot is so overpacked and borderline sketchy to park in for the fear of someone breaking in. There are also a ton of vendors selling you things and shoving things in your face as you get distracted. Distracted means target of pickpockets. Then the walk to the actual beach is rocky and narrow, not allowing a proper passage of people. Everyone is taking the same picture on the way too. Once you reach the beach, it’s filled with big rocks and no space to sit.

If you like space, sand, and no crowds, you probably will not enjoy this spot. But should you visit for that particular view? YES! But don’t be surprised about the reality of this place.

red beach in santorini

Perissa Black Sand Beach

Located on the opposite side of the caldera, this black sand beach is a lot more spacious and a lot less crowded. I walked along its entire length from Perivolos and it was crazy beautiful and relaxing. In the end, you reach a giant rock wall and can finally take a small break to catch some sun. I liked this spot a lot for two things: the walk along it and the ability to relax on the beachfront chairs offer by my hotel. Did I mention the numerous beer spots along the way?

Kamari beach has a similar vibe and it’s a little more north of this one, “behind” the rock that you will reach. This is another alternative to the more crowded places.

DSC01105 Greece

Hike the Volcano in Santorini or Take a Boat Tour Around the island

A short boat rides away from Oia, you will find Nea Kameni Island on which you can hike the volcano and get some sweet views. This is something you’d do if you had extended time on the island.I personally did not get to do this as I chose to lounge around by the pool of my hotel but it was on my to-do list for the trip.

The options for boat tours are endless on this island. Based on the type of activity you’d like to do, a sunset ride, a fishing trip, or even a party boat, there is a boat operator for it. Choose one and enjoy the day sailing away not having a worry in the world.

Wherever you are choosing to stay, either on the touristy caldera side or the more relaxed opposite side of the island, take a day to do nothing. Enjoy your accommodation, order a nice lunch or dinner, lay on the beach in your awesome lounge chair, have a nice cold beer (or five), and just appreciate and soak in the island vibe of Santorini. As active as I am on my trips, this is one of these destinations that’s meant to be enjoyed slowly.

Perfect Santorini Itinerary: FREE Downloadable Guides

Two Perfect Days in Santorini

I normally start these with my One Day Itinerary but I think visiting Santorini in one day would be a waste. Even two days seem short but with this guide, you will be able to see the most popular spots without rushing so much. For the first day, I recommend starting the day slow, absorbing the personality of this amazing island. Then you will head over to the very popular Oia village which should be visited despite the crowds. You will end your day with the sunset everyone’s been talking about. On day two, you will explore some beaches, drink good wine, and explore another beautiful village for dinner.

Three Perfect Days in Santorini

Three days is the minimum amount of time to soak this island in. The first two days are very similar to my two-day itinerary with the second night involving a party option. On day three, you will enjoy a new beach, a water sport, or a relaxing boat tour, ending your stay with a movie under the stars.

santos winery views

Now let’s talk about Mykonos

Mykonos Expectations…

Best parties. Bohemian heaven vibes. Boujee celebrity paradise.

Visiting Mykonos with my two closest girlfriends, we pictured perfect party beaches, cold cocktails, and an unforgettable time. We took a short boat from Santorini eager for our 3-day adventure. Sure, we wanted to stay longer but a backpacker budget can only stretch so long when your hostel costs 60 euros a night per person. To those who never stayed in a hostel, that’s a lot of hostel money! Mykonos’ reputation centers around partying so that is pretty much the only expectation we had.

… vs. Mykonos Reality

To those that don’t mind crowds, obnoxious drunk partygoers, and everyone thinking they’re an insta model in the little colorful streets and extreme wind, Mykonos could be the perfect destination as the views and ambiance override the annoyances. However, if you know that you don’t like this vibe, skip it for a less popular Greek island.

I’m not sure if people go to Mykonos to enjoy themselves or to take the perfect picture and say that went to Mykonos. It’s hard as it was very difficult for us to bond with anyone there compared to Athens or Santorini. However, that did not stop us from enjoying each other’s company and making the most out of this island gem.

Suggested length of stay in Mykonos

How long you stay in Mykonos really depends on what you’re looking for. For example, if you like a relaxing, slow-pace holiday, you need 4-5 or so days there. It will allow you to enjoy Mykonos beaches, see the town and do nothing but admire the beauty of the island. Simply popping in for a weekend? Rent a car and see the whole island in 2 to 3 days. Looking to party? Then I say you need at least 3 days. Mykonos partying is known for a reason. If you’re not sure, my sweet spot suggestion is 3 days to get a taste of everything and then hop on a boat to the next island. Mykonos is a pricey island so staying an extra day is not the cheapest per se.

Mykonos Hotels

paradise beach hostel in mykonos

Mykonos is expensive. The hotels and hostels will consume your budget especially if you’re a backpacker. Compared to other greek destinations which are incredibly cheap, you’ll feel this price surge in Mykonos. Staying closer to the main town, you can find expensive Airbnbs. The beaches have hotels and resorts but that will also cost you. Where you stay depends on what you’d like to do.

We stayed right in Paradise Beach at the Paradise Beach Hostel simply because we wanted to party. There are three options at the main resort: camping, hostel-like accommodations, and more upscale hotel rooms. Our room had three beds and provided no interactions with other guests. We simply chose that place due to its location but there are also hostels located a short walk from Paradise Beach that looked more fun for day activities.

More and more Airbnb options pop up on the island, so if you’re traveling with a group, it might be worth renting out a whole house.

Sightseeing Options in Mykonos

As simply put as possible, Paradise Beach area is for partying, Mykonos town is for exploring, eating, and shopping while the rest of the island is for relaxing. Although the island is pretty rocky and the beaches have black sand, it’s super beautiful. The famous little blue and white streets and windmills are what the hype is about. If you’re a tourist, there is not much more on this island aside from what I mentioned above.

Now I’m sure you’re tempted to ask, what’s everyone raving about then? Well, Mykonos is a party playground for the rich crowd and celebrities alike. It’s not uncommon for European “elites” to rent out mansions in Mykonos and spend time partying and lounging together. As a poor backpacker like myself, the island will have a very different experience for you 🙂

shopping in mykonos

Some options for things to do in Mykonos

There are not that many landmarks on this island. The best thing you can do there is to relax on the beautiful beaches, shop in the awesome boutiques and obviously party your nights away on the southern side of the island.

Little Venice

This is the area you’ve seen in all the photos. The rocky shore, low-standing houses on the water, outdoor tables with people dining, and sunset views. Along the water, you will get a nice perspective of that strip. It’s worth pausing at one of the numerous restaurants in the area for lunch or a drink. Although crowded, it really has stunning views. Don’t underestimate the wind either!

DSC01243 Greece

The iconic windmills of Mykonos are just around the corner from Little Venice. The area gets extremely crowded, especially during sunset time. Don’t be fooled by my empty picture below. I got lucky at just the right angle in between many many tourists. Oh, it is also very windy. Go figure out why they stuck giant windmills there.

I strongly recommend seeing this place during the day and then once again at night. They offer very different perspectives of the area and you will appreciate them even more.

DSC01259 Greece

Mykonos Town

When you’re done exploring the waterfront, I suggest getting lost in the little streets for some (expensive) shopping. The color contrast, the narrow alleys, and the street restaurants are really something worth seeing. Matoyianni Street is a good navigation point as it is the most known one.

Mykonos town is the famous Instagram area where you see people on stairs, walking in the alleys, and posing at sunrise. Note that a lot of the stairwells are people’s homes so don’t be that guy. It is indeed a stunning area but it could get annoying.

Paradise Beach

This is where you come to party. Paradise Beach Club is where the majority of party-goers stay as it has a hotel, hostel, and a camping site. On the same beach, you have Tropicana Club and Cavo up the hill.

At Paraga beach which is a short walk away, you will find more bars and smaller clubs as well. That is also where the infamous Scorpios Club is but reading up on its recent reviews, I wouldn’t even bother. It’s more aimed at celebrities and people with big pockets.

Super Paradise Beach

Known as the gay-friendly – friend of paradise beach for partying. We took a little boat from Paradise to Super Paradise for a couple of euros for a day trip to the beach. Providing a much more quiet atmosphere during the day, I simply loved this beach. It has a small beach bar, lounge chairs, and some water activities. It’s the perfect relaxation after a night of partying.

Beaches & Water Activities

Agios Sostis Beach is a more remote beach without crazy bars, crowds, or lounge chairs. The atmosphere feels more secluded and extremely relaxing. The blue waters, surrounding mountains, and tranquility are perfect for the ultimate day escape.

Elia Beach might be a little nude, but it certainly wows with its beauty! You’ll find stretches of beach chairs and appreciate its relaxing atmosphere. It’s also not too far from the main town.

Lastly, you can snorkel, scuba dive or better yet rent a boat with your friends for the ultimate Mykonos party treat. There are some boat tours offered on the island ranging from party cruises to more PG-rated sunset tours.

Perfect Mykonos Itinerary: FREE Downloadable Guides for your stay

You can easily spend a week in Mykonos partying your ass off or you can explore a little bit and see what else the island has to offer. I partied a little but spent the majority of my time exploring the island. Below you can find one, two, or three itineraries below for your perfect stay in Mykonos. Compared to Athens or even Santorini, this won’t be a place with many things to see. But then again, who goes to Mykonos to sightsee? 🙂

One Perfect Day in Mykonos

One day in Mykonos is enough to see the major highlights of the island. If you plan to visit beaches and the town, make sure to leave some extra time in between the buses. They might not be as reliable when it comes to time, but that’s island time for ya. You will start your morning exploring Mykonos town, then spend the afternoon sipping a drink on the beach. For your evening you will come back to town for a sunset on the water.

Two Perfect Days in Mykonos

Two days is good enough to see the town and party a little at night. The first day will be similar to the one-day itinerary. The next day will be free to spend a lazy day on the beach based on many beach options.

Three Perfect Days in Mykonos

Three days is a good option for those that want to take it slow and save some recovery time after a long night of partying. There aren’t that many options of things to do on this island, but with three days you’ll see the most popular spots, spend quality time on the beaches and not feel rushed. Mykonos is VERY expensive so even for three days, prepare a solid budget. My three-day itinerary is very similar to two days, but on day three you will venture out a little further.

Should you visit Mykonos or Santorini?

A small reality check first:

Although Santorini is a beautiful, romantic honeymoon and island paradise kinda destination, it is way overcrowded. It’s also physically hard to explore the villages and get places so if you have physical limitations, you won’t be able to explore that side of the island.

Mykonos is also stunning and unique but it’s so Instagram thirsty that if seeing this type of crowd annoys you, you might not enjoy some parts of the island. If you like to party though, it will be a dream destination for you.

Whether you should visit Mykonos or Santorini is the oldest debate among anyone visiting the Greek islands for the first time. I will give you the best advice I can and say, simply visit both! Each is world-famous for a reason and if you’re already in Greece, you might as well see them yourself. Yes, each has its own issues but when I think back on this trip, I don’t first recall the crowds or the other annoyances. I remember the amazing scenery and having an awesome time with my best friends instead.

To this day I look back at my pictures and can’t believe that I got to experience Santorini and Mykonos. But you came here to get a realistic view of what it’s like to travel there. If at any point you felt like this isn’t the spot for you, remember there are 227 Greek Islands 🙂

I went on the trip with my husband. We had the pleasure of embarking on a remarkable tour of Greece with Travel Zone through TourRadar. From start to finish our experience was nothing short of extraordinary. We couldnt have asked for a better way to explore this beautiful country.

Greek Island Explorer (10 Days)

We had a very good time and had a wonderful tour agent to help us all the way. She went above the call of duty every day for us all. The only event that was beyond the control of Tour Radar is the hotel in Mykonos which considered a lower level room as a 50 Euro upgrade for seniors and persons with disabilities. They preferred to leave those rooms vacant than allow them at the same rate.

I am glad that I took this package. It helped us have a stress free trip. Transfer from day 1 was seamless. I want to mention Kristos, the driver that picked us up from the airport who gave us a lot of useful information that kicked our trip to a good start. He served as a tour guide from the airport to the hotel. The hotels we stayed in were located near the must see places, especially our hotel in Athens. The person at the reception in all the hotels we stayed in was very helpful. George of Dot Travel was very prompt in answering my queries before our trip. It was a good package to take. We were satisfied.

The tour was quite a good mix of organised and leisure time, but the last day could have been managed better. We arrived at Oia about half an hour before sunset, had no direction as to where to see the sunset from, and no time to experience this beautiful town. Very dissapointed in that.

3 Day Island Tour: Santorini, Mykonos to Explore the Best of Cyclades

Everything was well organized. All drivers and guides were professional, personable, and everyone was on time. We would have liked more information about the tour ahead of time like what to expect on the ferry boat. If possible it would be nice to have a choice of hotels in our preferred rate and a choice of seating on the ferry. Thank you for the upgrade hotel in Mykonos. We had a lovely time.

Island Hopping in Greece Tour

Island Hopping in Greece

My friends and I just got back from island hopping in Greece, and we had an amazing time. The overall trip itself was incredible. Having the hotels set up and transportation in place made the trip much more relaxing and enjoyable. The hotels in Athens were a little questionable, however they served their purpose of having a place to shower and sleep. We wish we had more time to spend on the island as but nonetheless, I would rate the overall trip 5 stars! My overall rating falls with Indus Travel itself. There is a lot the company does not publicly disclose regarding pricing, which made the booking process a little frustrating. Additionally we got charged an extra $150 in Greece for having too many luggage bags, but it was covered in our flight for one carry on and a checked bag which confused us even more. Fortunately the trip to Greece over shadowed my mishaps with Indus Travel. I would book with the company again due to their organized travel and quick communication when we needed to connect with them during our trip, but I would prepare myself to budget more money in travel arrangements than what is originally stated when booking.

Outstanding Service! Excellent communication throughout the process, from booking to final checkout. Even in the single instance when weather did not cooperate and forced to cancel a sailing activity, the team helped finding and booking a good alternative. Great hotels and highly professional local services. Perfect if you are looking for a fun, stress-free, fully organized vacation. Beats the crazy self-planning/booking/coordination hassle many times over.
Everything was perfect and well planed out since the start, just stick to the group and your schedule. Met many wonderful people. Dilimar was the best, so helpful and attentive all days of the trip. Thank you ❤️ A

The Perfect Santorini and Mykonos Trip Itinerary for This Summer

tour grecia mykonos santorini

Planning an adventurous Santorini and Mykonos trip is a true blessing – these Mediterranean gems are two of the most wonderful islands in Greece, and if you have enough time and energy, it’s best that you visit both of them. Read this itinerary to learn what are the must-see attractions around these glorious Greek islands.

Learn What to See If You Travel to Greece This Summer – Starting From Athens, Follow This Itinerary

It is almost impossible that you come to Greece and you’ve never heard of the two most popular islands, not only in Greece but in the whole Mediterranean. Mykonos and Santorini are two small volcanic islands that are part of the Cyclades, and they are positioned deep in the sea south of Athens. If you travel from Europe and want to check out some of these places during your days here, you can find many connecting flights from Athens (especially during the busy summer season), or you can go to Piraeus port in Athens and take a ferry from there. Since they are close to each other, visiting both islands on the same travel tour is the best idea for spending your vacation days.

Mother and daughter overlooking Mykonos island

Mykonos is one of the best places in Greece, and its popular neighbor, Santorini island, is just a short trip away

Mykonos Is Recognizable for Its Luxurious Offer When It Comes to Best Hotels and Restaurants

Mykonos is one of the most exclusive places in Greece and all of Europe. For years it has attracted the world’s jet-set, billionaires, and celebrities, who came to love its luxurious offer. This includes shopping at trendy boutiques , eating at a prestige restaurant , staying in a luxury Mykonos villa, visiting exclusive beach bars , or renting a luxury yacht for your island hopping to and exploring some of the most beautiful beaches .

First Day Should Be Reserved for Historical Amenities

If you wonder what to visit in Mykonos , you should start with the most popular amenities, such as Little Venice, Mykonos Windmills, and Paraportiani Church . At Little Venice, you’ll find many picturesque houses, shops, and nice local tavernas where you can try some Greek specialties.

On Your Second Day Here, You Can Become a Part of Exciting Nightlife Scene

Mykonos is world-known for exciting and glamorous nightlife , so becoming a part of this scene can also be one of the things on your list. Here are some of the most popular spots you can choose to visit:

  • Principote.

Mykonos Also Offer Over 30 Beautiful Beaches, So You Can Visit Some of Them if You Travel Here

Did you know that Mykonos is home to over 30 amazing beaches? Some of the most beautiful ones are Ftelia Beach, Elia, Platys Gialos, and Lia Beach. Day three can be for relaxation when you’ll recharge your batteries after a fun night out and prepare yourself for the next exciting part of your summer trip – visiting Santorini.

How far is Mykonos from Santorini? Distance from these two islands is about 120 km or 64 nautical miles. This means you can easily get to Santorini island in just a few hours, mostly depending on the type of transport you choose. For example, you can book yourself a helicopter transfer from Mykonos, take an airplane or a ferry. Ferries from Mykonos to Santorini usually go four times a day, and the ride shouldn’t last longer than three hours.

Mykonos at sunset

Mykonos offers exciting nightlife, beautiful beaches, and many historical amenities you should definitely check out if you travel here

Santorini Is Home to Some Significant Historical Landmarks and Offers Plenty of Picturesque Sights and Unreal Sunsets

If you’re visiting this incredibly beautiful island for the first time and don’t know how to plan your stay , read our itinerary, and you won’t make any mistakes or miss anything important. Similar to Mykonos, the best time for you to come here is from April to October.

Visit Oia, Pyrgos on Your First Day – No Matter If You Come Directly From Athens or Mykonos

Oia is known as the crown jewel of Santorini island. At Pyrgos, you can wander around picturesque streets, take photos, buy some nice souvenirs for your loved ones, and have a nice traditional Greek lunch. You can also visit the Byzantine Castle Ruins with an incredible view, one of the most popular local tourist attractions. If you are accommodated here in Oia, watching the sunset and sunrise will be a spectacular experience.

On Your Second Day, Visit Akrotiri, the Ancient Minoan City

Akrotiri is an ancient city inhabited by Minoans starting from 6,000 years ago . It became one of the most significant Aegean ports around 4,000 BC and is often referred to as the “Greek Pompeii.” The fact that it’s much older than Pompeii makes this place even more impressive. Unfortunately, the inhabitants were wiped out in the volcanic explosion formed in Santorini’s Caldera. After a long day of exploring interesting historical facts and legends, you can relax at Vlychada Beach.

On Your Third Day in Santorini, You Can Visit Thera, Perissa, and Fira City

Ancient Thera was initially found in the 9th century BC, which makes it much newer than Akrotiri. It will give you an idea of what the ruins of the ancient strategic lookout actually look like when they are not preserved perfectly by volcanic ash. Perissa is an impressive Santorini beach with black sand, so you should definitely stop here as well if you have enough time. Close your daily Greek tour in Fira – the biggest city on the island. Here you can find plenty of bars, shops, wineries, and restaurants, but also popular churches and archeological museums.

Santorini houses

Santorini, Greece, offers an incredible view and picturesque landmarks you shouldn’t miss if you get a chance to travel here during your tour

Every Day Can Be a Blast With Our Santorini and Mykonos Trip Itinerary

If you follow our itinerary, there is no doubt you’ll have an amazing time around these incredible islands. It is recommended to book your accommodation on time because these islands get overcrowded with tourists during the summer season. On Mykonos island, you can avoid sleeping in a hotel by renting one of the private villas in Mykonos for maximum comfort, and Santorini’s accommodation should be close to the place you want to spend most of your time. The Ace VIP can help you book some of the most luxurious Mykonos villas with private helipads , from which you can go on a helicopter ride to Santorini.

Visit the iconic 16th-century Church of Panagia Paraportiani, a stunning example of Cycladic architecture. Mykonos is also home to several museums, such as the Archaeological Museum, which displays artifacts from the island’s ancient history, and the Aegean Maritime Museum, focusing on the maritime heritage of the Cyclades. And for art lovers, the Mykonos Art Gallery showcases works by local and international artists.

Brief Overview of Santorini

Santorini, a captivating Greek island in the Cyclades archipelago, is renowned for its dramatic beauty, breathtaking sunsets, and picturesque cliffside towns. This volcanic island is a true gem in the Aegean Sea, attracting visitors from all over the world.

One of the defining features of Santorini is its unique landscape. The island was shaped by a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, resulting in steep cliffs, rugged coastlines, and the famous Santorini caldera. The caldera, a large submerged crater, provides stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and is a sight that should not be missed.

The island’s main towns, Fira and Oia, are postcard-perfect with their white-washed buildings, blue-domed churches, and narrow cobbled streets. From these towns, you can wander along the cliffside paths and indulge in breathtaking views of the sea and the iconic Santorini sunset.

Santorini is also renowned for its unique beaches. The volcanic origin of the island gives the beaches their distinct color and character. From the black sand beach of Perissa to the red sand beach of Akrotiri and the white pebble beach of Kamari, each has its own charm and allure.

In addition to its natural beauty, Santorini offers an array of cultural and historical attractions. Explore the ancient ruins of Thera, an ancient city that was buried by volcanic ash. Visit the Akrotiri archaeological site, often referred to as the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” and discover the remains of an advanced Minoan civilization.

When it comes to gastronomy, Santorini is a paradise for food lovers. The island is known for its locally grown ingredients, including cherry tomatoes, fava beans, and capers. Indulge in traditional Greek dishes, such as fresh seafood, juicy souvlaki, and mouthwatering fritters known as “tomatokeftedes.”

Whether you’re soaking in the stunning views, exploring ancient ruins, or savoring delectable cuisine, Santorini offers a truly unforgettable experience. It’s no wonder that this enchanting island has captured the hearts of travelers from around the world.

Planning Your One-Day Trip

Planning a one-day trip from Mykonos to Santorini requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure you make the most of your limited time. Here are some tips to help you plan your itinerary:

1. Time of Year:

Consider the time of year when planning your trip. The peak season in both Mykonos and Santorini is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warmest and the islands are buzzing with tourists. However, visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) can provide a more relaxed experience, with fewer crowds and milder temperatures.

2. Transportation:

Research and book your transportation options in advance. There are several ways to travel from Mykonos to Santorini, including by ferry or by plane. Ferries are the most common mode of transportation and offer a scenic journey across the Aegean Sea. However, keep in mind that the ferry ride can take several hours, so plan your time accordingly. Alternatively, taking a domestic flight is quicker but may be more expensive.

3. Itinerary:

Create a well-planned itinerary to make the most of your day in Santorini. Start by deciding which sights and activities are a priority for you. Some must-see attractions include the beautiful village of Oia, the stunning Santorini caldera, and the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. Consider whether you want to spend more time exploring the towns or relaxing at the beaches, and allocate your time accordingly.

4. Early Start:

To maximize your time in Santorini, start your day early. Depending on your chosen mode of transportation, aim to catch an early morning ferry or flight from Mykonos to Santorini. This will give you a head start on your day and allow you to make the most of your limited time on the island.

5. Pack Essentials:

Ensure you pack the essentials for your day trip. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes, and a swimsuit if you plan to visit the beaches. Additionally, carry a small backpack with water, snacks, and any necessary medications.

6. Remain Flexible:

While having a well-planned itinerary is important, it’s also essential to remain flexible. Unexpected delays or changes may occur during your trip, so be prepared to adapt your plans as necessary. Remember to relax and enjoy the experience rather than sticking strictly to a rigid schedule.

By taking these factors into account and planning ahead, you can make the most of your one-day trip from Mykonos to Santorini, ensuring a memorable and fulfilling experience on both islands.

Transportation Options

When it comes to traveling from Mykonos to Santorini, there are several transportation options available to suit different preferences and budgets. Here are the main modes of transportation to consider:

The most popular and scenic option is to take a ferry from Mykonos to Santorini. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on the type of ferry chosen. There are both high-speed ferries and conventional ferries available, with varying ticket prices and amenities. The ferries typically depart from the old port in Mykonos Town and arrive at the Athinios Port in Santorini.

The ferry ride offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the opportunity to enjoy the fresh sea breeze. Onboard, you’ll find comfortable seating areas, cafes, and sometimes even outdoor decks where you can relax and soak in the atmosphere.

2. Domestic Flight:

If you’re short on time or prefer a quicker mode of transportation, taking a domestic flight from Mykonos to Santorini is an option to consider. Several airlines operate daily flights between the two islands, with flights typically taking around 30 minutes. Flying allows you to save time and reach your destination swiftly.

Keep in mind that flights tend to be more expensive than ferry tickets. Additionally, there are luggage restrictions that may apply, so check the airline’s policies before booking your flight.

3. Private Yacht or Speedboat:

For those seeking a more luxurious and personalized experience, chartering a private yacht or speedboat is an option worth exploring. This allows you to travel at your own pace and enjoy the stunning views of the Aegean Sea in utmost comfort and privacy.

Private yacht charters offer flexibility, allowing you to customize your itinerary and make stops at secluded beaches or other nearby islands along the way. However, it is important to note that this option can be quite expensive and may not be feasible for all budgets.

4. Guided Day Trip Tours:

If you prefer a hassle-free and guided experience, joining a day trip tour is a convenient option. Several tour operators offer organized day trips from Mykonos to Santorini, providing transportation and guiding you through the main highlights of Santorini in a limited timeframe. This option is particularly useful for travelers who want a pre-planned itinerary and the expertise of a local guide.

Before booking a guided day trip, ensure that the tour operator offers the activities and attractions you’re most interested in and that the tour schedule aligns with your preferences.

When choosing your transportation option, consider factors such as cost, travel time, level of comfort, and personal preferences. Regardless of the mode of transportation you choose, each offers its own unique experience, and the journey itself will surely leave you in awe of the beauty of the Greek islands.

  • Syros, a short ferry ride from Mykonos, is a luxurious and underrated island to visit in Greece .
  • I visit every year , and love spending the day at a beach club and seeing a show at Apollon Theater.
  • Belle Époque, Theosis, and Allou Yialou are some of the best places to eat and drink on the island.

Tourists flock to the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini every summer. But people are finally starting to catch on to the fact that many popular destinations are overpriced and overcrowded.

Luckily, Greece has over 220 inhabited islands to explore — and just a short ferry ride from Mykonos lies Syros.

My grandmother is from the island, and I visit it every year. It's one of the most underrated and luxurious destinations in Greece.

Here are 10 of my favorite things to do on Syros.

<p><span>One of Syros' most </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/famous-landmarks-construction-2018-3"><span>prominent landmarks</span></a><span> is Miaouli Square, located just a few steps away from the harbor in the main city of Ermoupoli. </span></p><p><span>It's a great place to start exploring the island — people of all ages gather to chat and catch up, kids play, and teens socialize on the steps of the town hall.</span></p><p><span>I love sitting in one of the many cafés around the plaza, like Belle Époque, and enjoying pastries and Greek coffee while I watch the town go by.</span></p>

Grab a coffee at Belle Époque in Miaouli Square.

One of Syros' most prominent landmarks is Miaouli Square, located just a few steps away from the harbor in the main city of Ermoupoli.

It's a great place to start exploring the island — people of all ages gather to chat and catch up, kids play, and teens socialize on the steps of the town hall.

I love sitting in one of the many cafés around the plaza, like Belle Époque, and enjoying pastries and Greek coffee while I watch the town go by.

The water here is a beautiful, deep, clear blue, but there are no shallows, so it's only recommended for strong swimmers.

You may occasionally get sprayed by waves while enjoying your drinks, but the atmosphere is always fun, especially on summer afternoons when there are endless parties with Greek music.
