Herzogstand to Heimgarten: Enjoy a Beautiful Hike in the Bavarian Alps

The herzogstand to heimgarten isn’t an ordinary hike in the bavarian alps..

Besides being a great day hike, the trail from Herzogstand to Heimgarten has a royal history. The name “Herzog” means “duke” in German. The area was once favored by King Ludwig and Herzog Duke Wilhelm IV as a hunting area. Now it is a favourite with German locals and a great way to spend the day on a weekend. The first time I visited I was intrigued – if it was good enough for royalty, it was worth a day of exploring.

Where is Herzogstand/Heimgarten?

Perched above the Walchensee, the deepest alpine lake in Germany, Herzogstand to Heimgarten is one of the most scenic hikes in the area. The hike starts at the Herzogstandbahn, the cable car that whisked us up over 700m in a matter of minutes, instead of a 2 1/2 hour hike up.

As we waited nearly an hour in line, I began questioning our decision and became apprehensive about all the other people who had the same summit in mind.  So much for getting away from it all.

Hiking To The Top

Travel tip : This is not a quiet hike. It is a popular hike and you are not likely to find solitude here. Especially on a warm sunny weekend. But I must admit, that although I am not much of a “busy trail” hiker, the views at the top of the Walchensee were definitely worth it.

We soon passed a hut and the zigzagged path was obvious.  We headed up and reached Herzogstand about 20 minutes later.  Not surprisingly, we didn’t have Herzogstand to ourselves.

But when we saw the view of the Walchensee which was even better than the view we had from the top of the cable car, we weren’t complaining.

The Heimgarten Summit

Getting up to the summit was easy enough and we spent a few minutes soaking up the much-needed sun. Especially after a long winter, I love having hikes that give me some good sun time. It was time to head down. This is the part where we got to hit the ridge part of the hike towards the Heimgarten Summit. I love ridge walks, they are my favourite types of hikes.

I love that you get to enjoy your hard work of climbing up the mountain while you make your way across the ridge. The narrow ridge walk from Herzogstand to Heimgarten was exceptionally fun. It was definitely my favorite part of the hike.

Expect to scramble in some places (where you have to use your hands on the rock) and very narrow.  In some places, it is less than a meter wide in some places and straight down on both sides.

Although there was a chain on the scramble and narrow parts to hang onto, I wouldn’t recommend the ridge portion of the hike for anyone afraid of heights.  Fortunately, I’m not afraid of heights and couldn’t stop smiling.

We finally made it to the Heimgarten Summit. You won’t miss it as there is a giant cross at the summit, right below the Heimgarten is a hut.

By this time we had worked up an appetite and wanted to soak in the views of the Walchensee for just a little bit longer before heading down.

The trail down from the Heimgarten was mostly forested but did have several views along the way.  It wasn’t quite as busy on the way down as it was early evening, but we were still far from being alone.

A little over four hours after we started, we were back at our car.

Know Before You Hike Herzogstand to Heimgarten

Getting to Herzogstand and the Heimgarten :  The easiest way to get to the Walchensee/starting point for the Herzogstand is to drive.  It’s ~85km south of Munich .

Alternatively, you can also take the train to the nearby town of Kochel and then catch a local bus.  Note if you drive, the Walchensee is a very popular destination, so expect delays.

It took us over 2 hours to get there from Munich and over  2 1/2 on the way home due to traffic jams near the Walchensee in both directions, so allow for extra time, or plan to travel very early or later in the day.

Travel Tip :  The Herzogstand is a very popular destination so don’t come here if you’re seeking solitude.  Having said that I loved it (and I don’t like hiking with crowds) so I would recommend getting an early start to beat some of the crowds.

Heimgarten-Herzogstand Rundwanderung

Tolle Rundwanderung, mit tollen Ausblick. Trittsicherheit und Schwindelfreiheit wird für die Gradwanderung benötigt.

Die Tour ist toll, mit einer fantastischen Aussicht. Man startet vom Parkplatz an der Herzogstandbahn und kommt dann dort auch wieder an. Jedoch sollte die Wanderung früh beginnen, denn aufgrund der Beliebtheit sind die Wanderwege sehr voll. Am Grad zwischen Heimgarten und Herzogstand kann es bei hoher Besucherzahl sehr eng werden.

An amazing hike with splendid views over the Bavarian alps and the lakes (Kochelsee and Walchensee)!

The Heimgarten/Herzogstand trail is a famous one and there's a reason why: a great hike with outstanding views! Its close vicinity to the Kochelsee and Walchensee only make it even more attractive, since you can cool off with a swim in one of the lakes if you're done hiking and enjoying the views at the top. 

To get there, drive towards Walchensee. Drive to the "Herzogstandbahn" (the cable lift to the top of the Herzogstand peak). You can park your car there (there's a fee of €3/car, although, if you start your hike early enough, the park guard won't be there yet, and you can just drive onto the parking lot). The trailhead starts from the parking and is signed with yellow trail signs (H5 trail). The whole trail is signposted very well!

It's a contentious uphill hike (approximately 2h30-2h45) to the Heimgarten peak. It's mostly through forested area, although some views in between are open and are just amazing. The view at the top is even better and is great at all 360°.  When you reach the Heimgarten peak, there's a hut where you can buy food/drinks if you please or you can continue your trail towards the Herzogstand. From Heimgarten, it's another 2h (approximately) to the Herzogstand, with some descending/flat/ascending parts. 

The cable car goes down from the Herzogstand peak and there's also a hut where you can buy food or have a beer. It's more crowded around the Herzogstand (blame the cable lift). You can also just descend from a trail (takes approximately 1h45).

Start your hike early if you want to enjoy the sunrise and if you want to avoid the crowds, it's a popular hike and there's the fact that there's a cable car going up (to the Herzogstand peak). Or start your trail towards the Herzogstand and hike towards the Heimgarten (starting point is the same, just follow the sings towards Herzogstand instead of Heimgarten).

Relax and cool down afterwards with a refreshing swim in the beautiful Walchensee.

Alps Scenic Hikes Series - Heimgarten to Herzogstand

This is a very well known day-tour in the German Alps. First hike up Herzogstand peak from where you get your first magnificent views over Walchensee and Kochelsee (there is also a cable car for everybody who does not want to walk 1.5-2h through cool forest overlooking the lake Walchensee). From there the trail leads you directly to the next peak, the Heimgarten. On the walk you have an incredible panorama over the Bavarian Alpine Foreland with the Staffelsee, Starnbergersee, Kochelsee, and Ammersee. From Heimgarten you can oversee the whole trail until Herzogstand peak and also again Kochelsee and Walchensee to its left and right. The last part of the walk goes just back down to your starting point.  

Where to park your car ?

Herzogstand is located by Walchensee by the village of Walchensee. The trailhead is located at the parking lot of Herzogstandbahn. There you can park your car and when you come before nine o clock you don´t have to pay a parking fee. As this is a round tour you can also walk it the other way around.

The trailhead starts directly at the parking lot. The first two hours you walk through forest steadily upwards with some steep parts. As you get farther up the forest lightens up and you get first views of Walchensee from above. The trail ends as you walk out the forest and reach the Herzogstandhütte (a mountain Hut) where you can get yourself something to eat (Kaiserschmarn) or drink (beer). Here you will notice that it gets more crowded because this is where people are coming up with the cable car “Herzogstandbahn”. You walk the last few serpentines with mountain pines along your way. At the top the summit cross greets you with an amazing panorama. You can see from the Staffelsee near Murnau to the Starnbergersee (Lake Stanbergersee), Ammersee, Kochelsee and Walchensee and have a good view of the alps in the south! This is a truly great place to have a break and make a picnic before you continue your hike.

From the summit cross the trail leads you back down and you can already see the next destination, the Heimgarten peak and the whole trail that lays before you. For this part you shouldn’t be scared of heights because it leads along a ridge. As the walk is mainly even it is not very exhausting and you can enjoy the panorama. The last meters before you get to the Heimgarten peak, the trail gets steeper again and if it is a sunny day like ours was it can get really hot! But on the top you will be rewarded with a cool view over the trail to Herzogstand peak and the Kochel- and Walchensee to its left and right.

I would recommend to have another break and get yourself a Kaiserschmarrn (one of the best I’ve ever eaten, maybe better than the one my mom makes) and something to drink at the Heimgartenhütte. If you are lucky you catch a table with a good view down to Walchensee. The last part of the trail leads you back down to the parking lot. The serpentines can get a little boring in the end as it is a little bit longer than the walk up to Herzogstand. If you don’t like walking down you can also walk the trail the other way around and get down with the Herzogstandbahn (cable car).

Where to stay

There is one campsite at the lake which is quite nice. Also there are several Hotels and Restaurants in the Walchensee Village and the area where you can stay!

Die Wanderung vom Herzogstand zum Heimgarten fällt in eine ganz besondere Kategorie. Das alpine Genre der Gratbegehungen - welches sich bei Bergfreunden besonders großer Beliebtheit erfreut. Biancograt und Hörnligrat klingen wie Musik in den Ohren erfahrener Alpinisten. Für entsprechende Rasierklingen muss man aber nicht gleich in die Ferne schweifen. Schaut man direkt vor die Haustür, in die Bayerischen Alpen , findet sich zum Beispiel der Watzmanngrat oder der berüchtigte Jubiläumsgrat . Die Begehung der bisher genannten ist indes schwere Kost, bleibt den erfahrenen Alpin-Cracks vorbehalten.

Aber auch der klassische Bergwanderer braucht auf Touren der Gattung Grate nicht zu verzichten. Am Walchensee findet sich eben zwischen Herzogstand und Heimgarten eine Achse gutmütigen Charakters . Eine Linie auf der nicht bei jedem Schritt um Leib und Leben gebangt werden muss, sonst aber alle Vorzüge eines echten Grates hat: Zwei prominente Gipfel - einer im Bug und einer im Heck der Schneide. Dazwischen ausschweifende Perspektiven in die umrahmende Landschaft.

Die schwierigsten Stellen sind während des Abstiegs vom Herzogstand sowie auf den ersten Gratmetern zu nehmen. Das sind indes kurze Passagen, die nicht das Schwierigkeitsniveau einer durchschnittlichen Bergtour übersteigen. Für geländegängie Bergwanderer also beherrschbares Terrain - auch Dank der installierten Hilfsmittel. Nach spannendem Auftakt verharmlost sich der Weg zügig. Der konzentrierte Blick zum Boden schwenkt zunehmend nach links und rechts - zur lieblichen Seen-Umrahmung und hinüber auf eine gewaltige Karwendel-Wetterstein-Skyline.

Die Wanderung vom Herzogstand zum Heimgarten (man kann fast von einer Überschreitung sprechen) gehört mit mehr als 1.300 Höhenmeter nicht gerade zu den konditionellen Leichtgewichten. Wenn die Herzogstandbahn zu Hilfe genommen wird, lassen sich im Aufstieg gut 800 Höhenmeter (respektive 2 ½ Stunden) einsparen . Das kommt den weniger sportlichen Gesellen sehr entgegen - was demzufolge reichlich genutzt wird. Da wundert es nicht, das diese wunderschöne Höhenwanderung zu den Top 10 der meistfrequentierten Touren der Bayerischen Voralpen gehört.

Anforderungen/Schwierigkeiten

Vom Walchensee , beziehungsweise der Talstation der Herzogstandbahn , auf einfachen Bergpfaden zum Herzogstand . Beim Aufstieg im Einzug des Wassergraben einige Drahtseilsicherungen - für Geübte indes unproblematisch. Verkürzung durch Benutzung der Seilbahn möglich. Abstieg vom Herzogstand sowie die ersten Meter auf dem Grat abschüssiges, ausgesetztes Areal. Einige Kabel helfen bei Überwindung der schwierigsten Passagen. Im Fortschritt rasch einfaches Gehgelände - dann anhaltend bis zum Ende der Wanderung. Ohne Unterstützung der Seilbahn konditionell ein ziemlicher Brocken. Aber auch mit ein Mindestmaß an Ausdauer nötig. Trittsicherheit sowie Schwindelfreiheit für die ausgesetzten Stellen unentbehrlich.

Auf- und Abstiege sind ausreichend markiert. Auf dem Grat wird die Route durch das Gelände, zudem von unübersehbaren Begehungsspuren angezeigt.

Der Walchensee war bereits mehrfach Drehort diverser Filmprojekte. So ließ Michael Herbig 2008 am Ufer des Walchensee ein Wikingerdorf aufbauen. In der Kulisse wurde die Realverfilmung von Wickie und die starken Männer sowie 2010 die Fortsetzung Wickie auf großer Fahrt realisiert. Teile des künstlichen Dorfes stehen heute in der Ortschaft Walchensee und dienen der Region als Touristenattraktion.

Vom Walchensee auf den Herzogstand

Unsere Wanderung vom Herzogstand über den Grat zum Heimgarten , sowie die Rückkehr ins Tal hat einen sehr großzügigen Rahmen. Angesichts dessen sollten alle die nicht ganz so fit sind den Aufstieg unter Zuhilfenahme der Herzogstandbahn abkürzen. Für einen vergleichsweise günstigen Tarif kann mit Hilfe des Chauffierservices 800 Hm Aufstieg (entspricht ca. 2 ½ Stunden) eingespart werden. Das schont nicht nur die persönlichen Energiereserven für den Gratweg, sondern entspannt auch das Zeitmanagement für die Runde. In Summe ist man weniger gehetzt, zugleich kann man sich mehr dem Genuss auf der Wanderung hingeben.

Sind wir an der Seilbahn-Bergstation angekommen, lässt sich mit wenigen Schritten die geschichtsträchtige Kriegerkapelle besuchen. Dafür nicht die breiten Trasse hinunter zum Herzogstandhaus aufnehmen, sondern in den schmalen Pfad rechtsseitig der Bergstation einscheren. Ein kurzer Aufstieg endet an der Terrasse der Gedenkstätte (1.600 m). Hier präsentiert sich ein Vorgeschmack immenser Schauwerte, die uns noch lange Zeit auf der Gratwanderung begleiten werden. Durch Krummholz ferner über Weidegrün schließlich zum Herzogstandhaus (1.575 m) hinunter wandern.

Variante: Aufstieg Herzogstand ohne Seilbahn

Bei sportlich ambitionierten Bergwanderern ist die Nutzung von Seilbahnen verpönt. Alle die den Aufstieg zum Herzogstand by fair means ableisten wollen, halten sich an den Parkplatz rechts neben der Talstation (820 m). Am rechten Ende der Parkfläche in den augenscheinlichen Steig durch den Wald einfädeln. Die Linie schwenkt in westliche Tendenz ein, führt unter dem Kabel der Seilbahn hindurch. Kehrenreich, zudem etwas eintönig geht es den Bergwald aufwärts. Der Fortgang mündet in die Gländekerbe des Wassergraben , welcher übertrieben mit mehreren Drahtseilen gesichert ist. Oberhalb der Mulde schwenkt das Zick Zack gen Osten ein, entlässt den Fußgänger endlich am Herzogstandhaus (1.575 m).

Für unseren ersten Gipfel an der populären Jausenstation rechts vorbeilaufen. Die latschenüberwucherte Kuppe des Martinskopf (1.676 m) wird an seinem Sockel traversiert. Mit etwas zusätzlichem Aufwand würde sich die begrünte Kuppe via Serpentinensteig auch einnehmen lassen. Der Quergang dreht in weit ausholende Serpentinen ein. Das Hin und Her tritt schließlich mit einem Vorgipfel des Herzogstand in Kontakt - welcher von einem stattlichen Kreuz markiert ist. Für den Hauptgipfel müssen wir indes eine Kehre höher, wo uns zuletzt der weithin sichtbare Pavillon empfängt (1.731 m).

Wanderung vom Herzogstand über den Grat zum Heimgarten

Mit dem Zugang zur Gratschneide wird gleichzeitig die Überschreitung des Herzogstand vollzogen. Unterhalb des Gipfel rechts haltend steil hinab zur Geländekante. Erste Sicherungen erleichtern den Abstieg. Jetzt immer an den luftige, enge First halten - Begehungsspuren geben zweifelsfrei die Richtung vor. Bald gewährt eine schmale Scharte eindrücklichen Tiefblick auf eine kreuzgeschmückte Felsnadel inklusive malerischer Kochelsee-Umrahmung. Ein tolles Fotomotiv!

Vorbei an einem provisorischen Handlauf zu einem felsigen Aufschwung. Mittels Kabelsicherung wird diese Barriere schwungvoll überwunden. Der Fortschritt zügelt das Territorium, der Grat verbreitert sich fast zu einem Rücken. Unsere Anspannung kann nun dem reinen Genuss weichen. Der Ablauf geht auf Tuchfühlung mit einer markanten Kuppe. An deren Zenit steht das Schlehdorfer Kreuz (kann unschwierig erstürmt werden).

Die Weiterverfolgung des Grates wird von immensen landschaftlichen Kostbarkeiten flankiert. Eindrücke wie aus einem Foto-Bildband verführen unseren Blick. Links bestimmt die mächtige Skyline von Karwendel nebst Wettstein das Geschehen. Rechts versüßt die flache Seenlandschaft des Alpenvorlandes unsere Blicke. Zudem kann bei klarer Luft am Horizont München ausgemacht werden. Darüber hinaus offeriert unser Standpunkt eine schlank-sportliche Perspektive der Gratkante.

Eine Abzweigung hinab in die Heimgarten-Nordwestflanke unbeachtet lassen. In diesem Bezirk hält der Grat mit ca. 1.570 m auch seinen tiefsten Punkt bereit. Bald darauf holt unsere Führe rechtsschwenkend zum finalen Gipfelsturm aus. In einem Linksbogen geht es hinauf zum kreuzgeschmückten Dach des Heimgarten (1.790 m) - etwa 2 Stunden nach Start am Herzogstand .

Vom Heimgarten zurück nach Walchensee

Vom Heimgarten-Gipfel in wenigen Schritten hinab zur Heimgartenhütte (1.770 m). Nach einer ausgiebigen Rast nehmen wir den Abstieg in südliche Tendenz auf (Überschreitung des Heimgarten ). Im Slalom steil hinunter zum kahlen Areal der Ohlstädter Alm (1.420 m). Inmitten der Lichtung findet sich ein Wegknoten, der in alle Himmelsrichtungen Äste entsendet. Der korrekte Anschluss bleibt geradeaus dem südlichen Gefilde treu. Ein Gegenanstieg gewinnt fast den Rotwandkopf , umgeht aber letztlich dessen höchsten Punkt. Jenseits schwenkt der Talkurs gen Osten ein. Kurz bevor die Route auf den Deiningbach trifft, reguliert sich der Kurs wieder in südliche Direktion (970 m). Die Führe geht daraufhin mit der Wasserströmung auf Tuchfühlung. Von hier in wenigen Minuten zu den ersten Häusern der Ortschaft Walchensee wandern. Und zuletzt im Beisein des Deiningbach zum Parkplatz der Herzogstandbahn .

Herzogstand und Heimgarten (1791 m) von Schlehdorf

Fantastische gratwanderung.

Die Wanderung auf dem Grat­weg vom Herzog­stand zum Heim­garten ist ein absoluter Klassiker in den Münchner Haus­bergen. Statt am Walchen­see kann man die Rund­tour übrigens auch in Schleh­dorf am Kochel­see beginnen. Diese Strecke ist land­schaft­lich mindestens genauso schön und deutlich ruhiger, aller­dings auch um einiges länger. (Stand: 20.04.2024 )

Tourcharakter und Schwierigkeit

Wegbeschreibung, über die raut.

Bevor es bergauf geht, kann man sich auf einem Sträßchen durch die Wiesen der so genannten Raut im Süden Schlehdorfs gemütlich warm­laufen. Raut ist übrigens ein verbreiteter Rodungs­name. Die Schleh­dorfer reuteten dort einst den Wald, um Weide­land und Wiesen für ihr Vieh zu gewinnen. Der Flurname dehnte sich von da südwärts aus zum Rauteck, der Rauteckalm und dem Rauteckkopf. Wir ignorieren alle Abzweigungen linker Hand, die zum Felsenweg Richtung Kochel leiten. Der für uns richtige Weg verläuft ein Stück vom Kochelsee entfernt. Nach Überqueren der Haselries­laine biegt er nach rechts und führt in Schleifen zur Lichtung am Jochfleck 1 hinauf.

Aufstieg über den Pionierweg

Wir wandern vom Jochfleck noch einige Zeit auf der Forst­straße weiter und passen auf, wann wir auf den Pionier­weg wechseln müssen. Die Forststraße kommen wir später vom Heim­garten wieder herab. Diese Tour­richtung ist sinnvoller, weil man die hatscherte Forst­straße bergab schneller hinter sich hat. Beim Pionierweg handelt es sich um einen schmalen, moderat ausgesetzten Steig. Er wurde 1892 in gerade einmal zwei Wochen von 190 bayerischen Pionieren unter der Leitung von Adalbert Neischl (1853–1911) erbaut. Zuvor gab es nur einen wag­halsigen Jäger­steig, der wegen der bei Regen anschwel­lenden Bäche oft unpassierbar war. Als Erstes durchquert der Pionierweg den Teufels­graben, der seinem Namen alle Ehre macht. Jenseits des Schön­rain­grabens kommt bald die Neischl-Rast 2 . Eine kurze Verschnauf­pause kann nach dem anstrengenden Aufstieg nicht schaden. Der letzte Bachlauf ist der meist trockene Grenzgraben. Dahinter öffnet sich die Lichtung Am Alple 3 und gleich darauf wird der so genannte Reit­weg erreicht, den sich einst Maximilian II. anlegen ließ.

Reitweg zum Herzogstand

Die langatmigen Serpentinen bis zur Schleh­dorfer Alm kann man über die steile Skipiste abkürzen. Ein Stück nach der Schlehdorfer Alm endet der ehemalige Reit­weg am Herzog­stand­haus. Nur wenige Hundert Meter entfernt liegt die Berg­station der Herzog­stand­bahn, so dass auf einen Schlag ziemlich viel los ist und das bleibt auch so bis zum Heim­garten. Der Weg passiert den Martins­kopf, auf dem einer der drei Pavillons von König Ludwig II. stand und schlängelt sich dann durch ein Latschenfeld dem Herzogstand 4 entgegen. Wer spät dran ist, kommt dort an sonnigen Tagen ganz schön ins Schwitzen.

Der Gipfelpavillon ist nicht mehr original erhalten. Alle könig­lichen Pavillons und Berg­häuser brannten durch Blitzschläge ab. Die massiven Stahl­verankerungen am Gipfel stammen von einer Bergantenne aus den 1920er Jahren. Damals wollte man mit Längst­wellen Funk­verbindungen nach Übersee herstellen. Die rasche Weiter­entwicklung der Funktechnik machte die Anlage allerdings kurz nach ihrer Fertigstellung überflüssig.

Der Herzog­stand wurde benannt zu Ehren des bayerischen Herzogs Wilhelm IV. (1493–1550), der dort gerne auf die Jagd ging. Die herzogliche Jagd­gesell­schaft nutzte das Kloster Benedikt­beuern als Stütz­punkt. Der Abt musste die kost­spieligen Einquar­tierungen und die Jagd in den klöster­lichen Wäldern dulden. Der ursprüng­liche Name des Herzog­stands war Farchen­berg. Er blieb beim Fahren­berg­kopf erhalten. Farche bedeutet Föhre. Diese Baum­art dominiert den Wald auf der Süd­seite. Mehr Info

Gratweg zum Heimgarten

Nun folgt der schönste Abschnitt der Wanderung. Immer am Grat entlang, zum Teil mit kurzen gesicherten Stellen, geht es hinüber zum Heim­garten. Etwa auf halber Strecke hat der Grat einen Höcker, auf dem das Schleh­dorfer Kreuz steht. Zum Schlehdorfer Kreuz gibt es einen wenig bekannten, teils weglosen Aufstieg über den Rauteck­kopf . Die Route ist technisch einfach, jedoch schwer zu finden. Nach dem Schlehdorfer Kreuz kommt der längere zweite Abschnitt auf dem Gratweg. Hinauf zum Heim­garten 5 gilt es zuletzt noch gut 200 Höhen­meter Gegen­anstieg durch die Latschen zu bewältigen.

Unter Heim­garten, bairisch Hoagascht, versteht man heute eine organisierte Musik- und Tanz­veranstaltung. Ursprüng­lich war damit die abend­liche Plauder­stunde gemeint, bei der man auf einem Hof oder Platz zusammen­kam, sich Geschichten erzählte, musizierte, sang und tanzte. So wie im Tal trafen sich auch oben im Gebirge die Alm­leute, Holzer und Jäger. Die Heim­garten­alm, inzwischen Kaser­alm genannt, könnte so ein Ort gewesen sein. Bis ins 19. Jahr­hundert hieß der Berg auf den Karten aller­dings Hain­garten, also ein eingezäunter Garten. Ist die alte Schreib­weise korrekt, dann wäre Heim­garten eine spätere laut­ähnliche Umdeutung. Mehr Info

Abstieg über das Rauchköpfl

Auf der Nordseite des Heimgartens führt ein viel begangener Steig zum Rauch­köpfl 6 hinab. Beim Abstieg hat man die ganze Zeit den Kochel­see wunderbar im Blickfeld. Am Rauchköpfl wenden sich die meisten links über die Kaseralm nach Ohlstadt , für Bahn­fahrer eine sinnvolle Alternative. Nach Schlehdorf muss man rechts. Unter dem Rauch­köpfl liegt eine heimelige Mulde, die teil­weise von einem Schutt­fächer überdeckt wird. Von da bietet sich die vermutlich eindrucks­vollste Perspektive auf die extrem zerklüftete Nord­flanke der Gruppe von Herzogstand und Heim­garten. Das Gestein heißt Haupt­dolomit . Stellenweise wurden die Schichten durch die tektonischen Kräfte geradezu senkrecht aufgerichtet und fallen nun auseinander, so dass sich zwischen ihnen unzählige Spalten öffnen. Eine spannende Felslandschaft, wie man sie nur selten derart aus der Nähe betrachten kann. Der Wanderweg dreht nach der Mulde nord­wärts, passiert ein Hüttlein und mündet dann in eine Forst­straße. Es ist diejenige vom Aufstieg, wobei es noch ein wenig dauert, bis wieder die Stelle erreicht wird, an welcher der Pionierweg abzweigt.

Bootsfahrt: Auf dem Kochel­see verkehrt im Sommer­halb­jahr ein Ausflugs­boot . Während der Fahrt hat man eine schöne Perspektive auf die umliegenden Berge und erfährt interessante Details über den Kochel­see.

Herzogstand – Heimgarten: Probably the most beautiful hike in Munich’s local mountains -A Photo Tour

The Herzogstand is probably Munich’s most famous local mountain. Just under an hour’s drive from the central ring road, the Herzogstand (Duke’s estate) is enthroned between Walchensee and Kochel am See and, with probably the most beautiful hike in the Bavarian Alps , offers a true jewel for outdoor photographers . Here we introduce you to this dream hike, Herzogstand – Heimgarten, and give you some photo tips .

Hike Herzogstand – Heimgarten

The crossing of the Herzogstand Heimgarten in Walchensee is started. The Herzogstand cable car from Walchensee is for those who are too lazy to walk, while sporty, quick-footed people climb into the hiking trail a few meters north of the cable car park.

At first, a little surefootedness and a strong head for heights are necessary, but the difficulty level is manageable for most mountain hikers.

The path leads without junctions and almost all the way steeply to the Herzogstand Hut. From the managed hut it is very easy to follow the wide path in a northerly direction to the already visible Herzogstand. For the last few meters, you can decide to rest at the summit cross, or to turn right towards the summit pulpit – the view is similarly spectacular.

From the summit, the actual crossing to the Heimgarten follows. The trail is only recommended for experienced mountain hikers ; sure-footedness and a strong head for heights are prerequisites.

The exposed passages are nevertheless very well secured with ropes and railings. Nevertheless, you should not allow the slightest slip here.

For about 2 hours, you follow the striking ridge to the summit of the Heimgarten. Here, too, the view is no less majestic, and you can enjoy an excellent refreshment at sunset at the Heimgartenhut.

For the way back from the Heimgarten to the south, and later over the ridge below the Rotwandkopf, one should plan adequately for a time stretch of about 2 to 3 hours. The path is no longer exposed, yet some experience is still required. Shortly before Walchensee, you may follows the signs to the Herzogstand cable car or take the short detour over Walchensee to refreshes yourself here.

Herzogstand and Heimgarten hiking trails (#herzogstand hike)

Herzogstand is a large and high mountain with an elevation of 1,731 meters above sea level and is northwest of Walchen Lake, forming part of a stunning landscape.

Herzogstand and Heimgarten are located in Kochel, in the vicinity of two gorgeous glacier lakes, Walchen and Kochel. As Kochel is hardly an hour from Munich, this hike can easily be done as a day trip, without staying overnight.

The reason for the fame of Herzogstand is its attraction to both master hikers and everyone. The Herzogstand cable car is for those who like walking or hiking to gaze at the magnificent view. You can easily take the cable car nearby the summit and just a 30-minute walk to take there. If you love hiking, you can continue from the Heimgarten summit to Ohlstadt on the opposite side. This journey will take your time, but the results are worth it.

This is simply a hiking journey, experiencing rich vegetation, European coniferous forests, and experiencing the beauty of the lakes from the top. You will not need to spend too much energy hiking to enjoy the beauty of this place.

How to get from Munich to Herzogstand?

After tourists catch a plane to Munich, you can get to Herzogstand by car, bus, or train. The first way is the easiest way to get to the Herzogstand by driving nearly 85 kilometers south of Munich.

Alternatively, You can take the train to the nearby town of Kochel and take a local bus to Herzogstand. From the Munich main station, take the train and then with the RVO bus line 9608 Kochel–Garmisch–Partenkirchen train station to the Walchen Herzogstand stop about 1.5 hours.

Please be noted that delays in traffic jams or overcrowded buses usually happen due to a popular Herzogstand in Munich. Hence, you should not hurry to enjoy your journey time.

If you travel to Munich with a group of friends, a tip for you is to buy a Bayern ticket. This day pass allows you to travel around Baravia in regional trains. The ticket price is 26 EUR (28.87 USD) per person and 8 EUR (8.88 USD) for each additional person (up to five additional people).

Although it is only 85 km, you sometimes have to spend more than two hours to get to the Herzogstand with its crowd. Therefore, you should prepare in advance a little time to get your perfect schedule.

What to eat in Herzogstand?

For Germans, especially those in Munich, it is a tradition that they dine in mountain huts after reaching the summit. Therefore, the advice is to enjoy a hearty meal at one of these huts for a complete alpine hiking experience. The cost per meal will be around 15–20 EUR (16.66–22.21 VND), and the cost can be slightly increased in the peak seasons.

Although there is a place to rest and local food at the summit, you should prepare some snacks to munch on during the hike. It could be candy bars, snacks, bananas, and more depending on your favorite.

When to visit Herzogstand?

As the ridge is quite narrow and exposed, you should not hike during the winter months or even after heavy rainfall. In winter, snow is also a pretty big barrier. However, for those of you who are an adventurer, even you can go trekking in the winter.

Personally, this hike is best experienced in spring or early autumn, which is the best time to visit Herzogstand as long as there isn’t a lot of snow on the trail.

The vegetation in the spring is still the most beautiful when the trees sprout, the whole forest seems to be new, green, and full of life.

If you visit Herzogstand in winter, an interesting activity that you should try is skiing. Most skiing here depends on the climate. That means enough snow, you can ski, not artificial skiing. In good conditions, participation in skiing is an effective experience. The ski area is preferred by locals for its romance and nature, except for the crowds. This is a pleasure, natural, and quick skiing experience that is Bavarians’ favorite. Moreover, the low price is unchanged throughout five to six years. It is the reason why this is an attractive activity for multi-member families.

Experience the journey

It is up to your health to choose the proper itinerary. If you do not much love trekking or hiking, you should choose to take the cable car to the top and walk for about 30 minutes to reach the destination.

You will have to catch the train to Ohlstadt, heading to the trailhead and up Heimgarten. Besides being a great day hike, the trail from Herzogstand to Heimgarten has a royal history.

King Ludwig and Herzog Duke Wilhelm IV once favored the area as a hunting area. Now it is a favorite with German locals and a great way to spend the day on a weekend.

When reaching a certain height of Heimgarten, the lake, and majestic natural landscape begin to raise in front of you. You are surely overwhelmed by this magnificent scenery. In the distance is Herzogstand that beauty makes you excited and leading on your journey.

When you reach the top of Herzogstand, you can stay and enjoy a traditional meal here. When you feel comfortable and healthy again, go down the mountain. You should prepare an insect spray during hiking. Many people do not pay attention to a house-shaped insect bulk in their clothes after climbing. If it is unlucky, insects can cause meningitis in some cases.
