Journal of Tourism Theory and Research (JTTR) is an online international scholarly research journal that publishes original, high-quality, and double-blind peer-reviewed articles. JTTR is committed to a broad range of topics including tourism, travel and hospitality management, gastronomy, transportation, event, leisure, recreation, and tourism education studies. JTTR also welcomes articles related to tourism in the fields of archeology, history, geography, technology, environment, etc. JTTR encourages research based on a variety of methods, qualitative and quantitative, and in-depth discussion and critique of key questions within tourism. The journal contains both practical and theoretical work that addresses tourism inquiry, method, and practice.

The JTTR is loyal to open access to academic work. All the original articles and review papers are free to access immediately from the date of publication. JTTR doesn’t charge any fees for any reader to download articles and reviews for their own scholarly use. There are no submission fees or page charges for this journal.

Safari Baby Shower Ideas: Planning a Safari-Themed Celebration

Planning a baby shower can be almost as exciting as the execution! There are many ideas, and when following a Safari Baby Shower theme, the number of animals and colors that can be included is nearly endless. From decorations to gifts, food, and activities, there are so many Safari Baby Shower ideas to choose from.

With many options available there are sure to be many opportunities to choose from alternatives for decorations, foods, and activities that will fit an elegant party, a kid or family-friendly party, or a lighthearted gathering. The expecting mother is sure to appreciate all of the efforts and will remember her Safari baby shower with fondness as they watch the child grow.

Safari Baby Shower Ideas – Decorations

Safari Baby Shower decorations really begin with what invitations you choose, as these will set the tone for the guests right from the start. For a safari themed Baby Shower choose invitations that are in green, tan, and natural colours. Safari invitations can be matched to balloons, banners, and much more.

Banners are a great way to share joy and greet people as they enter. Choose one that has baby animals on it, real or cartoon, and announce “congratulations”, or “welcome” or even that has the baby’s name and the month that they are due. Banners can be all one piece or they can be created with a string of flags, letters, or balloons.

Place settings add to the theme and help to create a cohesive appearance. Plates, napkins, and cups can all be themed. For a safari Baby Shower theme choose items that have images of animals on them, ideally baby animals for the baby shower. For added interest, cups can be located that are shaped like animals, for example, elephant cups with their trunk as the handle. These will please even the most serious party guests.

For easy and fun decorations, and even to use as a gift suggestion, use stuffed animals that are animals you would find on a safari, giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, etc. They can be placed around the room and used as a game later, or they can be all piled in one space like a hammock or scene. Ask guests to bring a copy of their childhood favorites to add to the special occasion.

Small plastic toy animals are ideal for this theme and can be placed around the table or hidden as surprises around the entire space. They are also perfect for putting on top of cake or cupcakes.

Use a tablecloth that is in the colors that match, a dark green or light green, tan, brown, or in animal print for added fun. The tablecloth will not only protect the surface of your table but add to the overall appeal of the space.

A safari theme backdrop can be used to make a great photography space. These can be as large or small as you want and can be hung on a wall inside or outside. Set up some props including animal masks, balloons, stuffed animals, and a camera to allow your guests to pose in front of it for both decoration and a fun activity to memorialize the event.

Safari gear, such as helmets, all-terrain vehicles, boots, and clothing can all be used to place around the room or even dress a scarecrow for added interest.

Balloons in the themed colors can be grouped near areas of interest such as the gift table, the snack table, and a guestbook to help guide visitors to all the areas that they should be sure to visit and can even mark the way to the bathroom for those guests who are not familiar with the home.

Leaves, palm trees, and sand are all associated with safari and can be added to the theme. Stand some fake palm trees around the space, and add some other large-leafed trees, real or artificial, to create a full safari immersion feeling. Bringing in elements of the environment can help people to settle into the theme and enjoy it even more. 

A safari themed balloon arch is a great way to create a focus in the room and when made with dark green light green, browns, and other neutral and calm tones will fit the theme and feel of your Safari baby shower. Place it around the space for gift opening or where the guest of honor will sit, or use it to frame a space for photographs, surround a framed picture of the sonogram, or bring attention to any other part of the experience.

More Safari Baby Shower Ideas

Print and hang pictures of animals on safari. These can be blown up for larger spaces, or printed smaller to put on place cards, or labelled food. Choose images that are cute, funny, silly, or include baby animals to match the theme the best.

Balloon animals are ideal for decorating a safari baby shower. These can be placed strategically around the room or along with other balloon arrangements to add visual interest, and people are certain to remember the baby shower with the balloon animals.

Goodie bags, or baby shower favors , are another way to tie the theme together and show your guests that you appreciate their attendance. Animal keychains, safari animal stickers to seal bags of candy or animal cracker treats, books about someone who went on safari, and the bags or boxes themselves being animal prints or having an image of animals on them are all a great fit for this theme.

Use wooden blocks with animals painted on them to create staggered presentations for snacks, drinks, and other decorations.

Add animal prints around the space. A zebra print throw blanket, cheetah print throw pillows, fake fur rugs, and even curtains and tablecloths can all be sourced in assorted animal prints.

Add streamers to the doorways, link balloons, and drape the tables to add additional color and detail.

Confetti can be spread around the table to add fun to the decorations and add a pop of color to any space.

Safari Baby Shower Food Ideas

Desserts are always a focus when food is involved, and sand can be a great starting point. Use ground graham crackers to create a sand base and add gummy animals to the “sand” all over a pudding for a great snack that everyone is sure to enjoy regardless of age.

Make your drinks exotic by using flavors related to a safari experience. Sparkling water is easy to flavor and safe for all ages, even the guest of honor, and can be created in pineapple, coconut pineapple, grapefruit, and many other varieties. Serve in champagne glasses for an elegant feel or place out small bottles of flavored water.

Serve cupcakes with green icing to mimic the plains and add a small plastic safari animal on top. Alternatively, an image of an animal placed as a flag on the top is easily added to either homemade or store-bought cupcakes.

Have a Safari themed cake made that has a dessert or oasis theme and use it as a centerpiece for the dessert or food table. This will delight the guests and create a lasting memory of the event.

Donuts can be lined up, standing against each other, and topped with green paper or toppers to look like pineapples. A matching taste profile adds to the appeal.

Fruit salads can add a light and flavorful option for a snack table.

Choose cupcake toppers, either from fondant, modeling chocolate, or printed images to place on top of plain cupcakes for easy dessert.

A punch with fruit floating on top can be used to create a watering hole, allowing people to stop by and pour a drink.

Cake pops covered with animal prints are sure to delight.

A veggie tray can mimic the food choices of the herbivores on safari and can be arranged to look like animals with a carrot mane, raisins for eyes, or bread as an elephant’s trunk. There are many creative ways to organize vegetables and other foods to look like animals.

Kebabs are a fun and easy way to enjoy snacks during a baby shower or other gathering. Chicken or other meats can be used along with vegetables or other savory items, while fruit kebabs with pineapple, grapes, berries, and more can add a pop of color to the table and let people snack as they socialize.

Animal Crackers can be placed in ground graham cracker base to appear as though they are walking across the sand, or in pudding for a mixture of textures.

What to bring to a Safari Baby Shower?

• Request stuffed animals as a gift, and you can create your own safari experience for the baby as it grows.
• Clothes that are safari themed or have animals on them can fit the theme well.
• Decoration or images, pictures, framed posters, and other decorative items are wonderful gifts for building a nursery.
• Gifts for guests can also be safari themed including small bags of candies with safari anima stickers holding them closed.
• Plastic or even robotic animals are great gifts for a safari-themed baby shower and can help the baby to learn about animals as they grow.
• Books on animals, safaris, and baby animals are all great gifts for any shower.

Safari Themed Baby Shower Games

• Create an animal safari by setting up stuffed animals around the room and putting up cards with basic information on each animal.
• Build a photo booth with a cut-out where the face would be, allowing guests to take pictures of themselves as those animals.
• Create a scavenger hunt with stuffed or plastic animals around the room and have guests find them all and check them off.
• Play a trivia game based on basic facts about the animals you see on safari.
• Fill a jar with small plastic elephants or giraffes and have people guess how many are in the jar.
• Create a bingo card using safari animals and plants.
• Rent animal costumes and have a race to see who can get dressed as an animal the fastest.
• Face painters can paint all the guest faces as different animals to bring some whimsy and light fun to the event.
• Pin the tail on the tiger.
• Fill a tub with sand and place toys within, then blindfold participants and have them search through the sand to find the animal toys. The first to find a certain number can win.
• Enjoy a wordplay game taking characteristics of safari animals and applying them to children. For example how they walk when they are first learning, how joeys ride with their mother, lions roar when they want something, and see who can come up with the best comparisons or puns.
• Play animal sounds and see who can name the animal the fastest.

Safari Themed Baby Shower Final Note

When planning a baby shower there are many things to consider. Once the theme is determined it can be easier to piece together the event and choose food, activities, and decorations that will match. A safari is full of new foliage, expansive views, and animals that some may never see in zoos. By incorporating each of these aspects into the planning a fun and whimsical experience that will bring joy to all those in attendance.

Many of the decorations and games are easy to find and the food can be made in ways that are budget-friendly and easy to execute. A safari-themed baby shower is sure to impress all of the guests and can even help them to choose what gifts to choose or how to wrap them. Be sure to take plenty of photos, or have everyone send the pictures they take to one online photo album to share the memories and keep them for years to come.

Lol, thank you, Lada! I love flashmobs! I especially like to watch the expressions of those observering change from WTF!? to smiles of delight and then to moving about and singing along. This is my all-time favorite one. I love the song & they made a wonderful video of it. Its quite the production number! That’s Russia, baby… sooper Pooper! (got to admire them even more for doing a number in English.)

Live webcam shows the square in front of the cinema «Sovremennik» in real time. The camera is installed on the house number 18 on Mir Street in the city of Elektrostal, Moscow Region, Russia. The live camera is aimed at the monument to I.F. Tevosyan, which is located on the square of the Sovremennik cinema. The intersection of Tevosyan Street and Mir Street is in the field of view of the web camera. Therefore, this live camera can help assess the workload of this section of the road and the presence of congestion at the intersection. The main entrance of the school №13 and the pedestrian crossing in front of it also on the broadcating.

The Moscow City Tourism Committee conference for the key stakeholders from Indian MICE market

The moscow city tourism committee recognized the market demands and organized the shaping mice future conference for representatives of the indian mice industry, to introduce them to the tourism strengths of the russian capital..

The event (Moscow City Tourism Committee conference) took place on April 19 in Delhi and brought together over 100 participants from MICE agencies of both countries, corporate customers, representatives of the travel industry in Moscow, Aeroflot and the Indian branches of Sberbank.

Business tourism is one of the most promising directions for Moscow. In 2023, the capital was visited by 3.7 million business tourists – 7% more than in 2022. And India remains one of the leaders among visitors from non-CIS countries in terms of the number of business travelers.

“The Russian capital as a center of business tourism and corporate events is already an established and a strong brand in the international arena,” – commented Anastasia Popova, Deputy General Director for International and Industry Cooperation of Project Office for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality in Moscow. – Now our task is to demonstrate to our Indian partners all the possibilities of organizing high value MICE events in Moscow in combination with already proven tourist programs”.

At the Shaping MICE Future Conference industry experts from Russia and India pronounced statements and speeches on the future of MICE events in these two countries, a presentation of the MICE potential of Moscow was showcased, and an analytical report on the state of the outbound MICE market in India was presented to the visitors.

During the panel discussion participants assessed the current status and interaction peculiarities with the MICE market in India, and developed recommendations for the MICE industry in Moscow during the general brainstorming session. Representatives of the Indian MICE industry participated in B2B negotiations to find new cross-partners in the Moscow business environment and among representatives of the hospitality industry.  

Representatives of the MICE industry took part in the event from Moscow. Among them were DMC (Grand Rus, Academservice, Headed Goose, Satguru Travel, Isba Rus, Hug the Bear, Mellenium Group)) as well as representatives of other partners interested in the development of MICE cooperation between Russia and India: Global transfers provider i’way and hotels Edge Seligerskaya & Edge Vinogradovo Moscow by Rotana.

“In 2024, we have witnessed a significant surge (more than quadruple) in the demand for transfers by Russians visiting India, both for business and leisure purposes. Muscovites are leading the trend, with 80% of transfer bookings originating from the capital since the beginning of the year. Additionally, we observe a growing interest from Indian tourism agencies in exploring Russia, resulting in a substantial increase in our collaboration,” — commented Dmitriy Saraykin, co-founder of Global Transfer Provider i’way. 

The Shaping MICE Future conference allowed the Moscow City Tourism Committee to form a pool of MICE industry representatives in Moscow to prioritize incoming requests for events, clarify India’s requirements for business and corporate events to build mutually effective work. Indian colleagues received up-to-date information about Moscow as a safe and attractive MICE destination, and were able to find potential partners among representatives of the MICE industry of the Russian capital and were able to present the MICE market in India.

“The event (Moscow City Tourism Committee conference) served as a remarkable platform for fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration within the tourism industry. The event (Moscow City Tourism Committee conference) provided us with invaluable opportunities to engage with key stakeholders from the tourism department, as well as tour operators and service providers.

The insights gained during the event (Moscow City Tourism Committee conference) underscored the Moscow City Tourism Committee’s keen interest in the Indian outbound market, and we are optimistic about the promising prospects for Moscow as a destination, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape. We firmly believe that with concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, Moscow has the potential to emerge as a top-choice destination for Indian tourists,” — shared his impressions Mudit Mathur, director of Tours Delite India, representing Academ Service – Russia in India.

The conference also assessed the solutions to foreign demand for non-standard venues and elements in MICE programs, such as museums, parks, theaters and others. Holding MICE events at offbeat locations, such as the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Planetarium and Khudozhestvenny Cinema, is becoming popular. This helps to attract conference organizers and creates a unique experience for the participants. Working in this format, many visitors who came to Moscow on a business trip want to return with their families and spend time as regular tourists.

In 2023, 60 thousand guests from India visited Moscow – a quarter more than a year earlier. This year, according to the results of January and February India entered the top 5 countries in terms of the volume of e-visas issued. E-visa was one of the significant factors in the recovery of demand for hotel services and high utilization (76%) of Moscow hotels in 2023 and, as a consequence, the growth of international tourist traffic, the activation of business and classical tourists from India, China, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and so on.

One of the significant initiatives launched to support the growth of the tourist flow is the Moscow MICE Ambassadors Program – an online certification program for representatives of the Indian market, which aims to create demand for Moscow as a MICE destination.

The Moscow City Tourism Committee and NIMA (Network of Indian MICE Agents) jointly launched the pilot project last year. The first 50 people from the Indian side who underwent the training and learned the intricacies of organizing business events in the Russian capital have received the relevant certificates. In 2024, the program will be made available to other MICE operators as well and is expected to expand to a total of 200 Moscow MICE Ambassadors by the end of the year .

Oklahoma man facing 12 years in Turks & Caicos prison released on bond, banned from travel

An American man facing 12 years in prison in Turks & Caicos after airport security found ammunition in his duffel bag won’t have to spend one more night in jail . For now.

Ryan Watson, 40, appeared before a court on Wednesday, agreeing to pay $15,000 to secure his release, according to a news alert from The Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force. 

The court granted Watson's release about two weeks after he was initially detained and arrested. He's being released with a slew of stipulations, including being prohibited from leaving the archipelago nation. He also had to surrender his passport and travel documents to the court, and needs to report to police twice a week as his case moves through the system.

His next court hearing is set for June 7.

Here’s what we know.

Why were Ryan and Valerie Watson detained in the Turks and Caicos?

Ryan and Valerie Watson were in Turks & Caicos to celebrate the 40th birthdays of several friends in early April, USA TODAY reported.

The couple was trying to catch a flight back home on April 12, when airport security found four rounds of ammunition “unknowingly left in a duffel bag from a deer hunting trip,” according to a GoFundMe post made on behalf of the family. 

They were both questioned and subsequently charged with possession of ammunition, a charge that carries a minimum of 12 years in prison in Turks & Caicos.

The couple was stuck on the island without passports, unable to get back to their two young children, which left Valerie Watson “terrified.” 

“We can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home," she told WBTS-TV in Boston  "And this is such an innocent mistake that we ... didn't even know it was there. So yeah, my immediate thought was our kids and them being parentless for that long."

Ryan Watson maintains that it was a “bonehead mistake” on his part, not knowing that the ammunition rounds he typically uses to hunt whitetail deer were in his bag, the outlet reported.

Ultimately, the charges were dropped against Valerie Watson, who has returned to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma governor vouches for family: ‘Outstanding members of the community’ 

Days after the Watson family was detained, Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt sent a letter to the Turks & Caicos Islands government in an attempt to get the home sooner.

“The Watsons are upstanding members of their community and the State of Oklahoma, and I can assure you countless others stand willing to confirm their high moral characters,” Stitt said.

He continued to say that the couple would never “intentionally break the law,” emphasizing the importance of having them return to Oklahoma so they can continue to serve the community, Valerie as a school teacher and Ryan as a medical product salesman.

 And so that their children, Van and Ellie, don’t have to face another day without both parents, he said.

Family creates GoFundMe to bring Ryan Watson home 

Close friends have created a GoFundMe on behalf of the Watson family to cover the costs of “mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation.” 

Valerie Watson said that the strain her family is under is tremendous, telling WBTS-TV that it could “ruin them.” 

“We've already talked, and we're like, what if we lose our house? Which, when we moved to Oklahoma, we built a home that we thought was our forever home,” she said. 

The sentiment was echoed by Ryan Watson, who says “this is something that we may never recover from.” 

“The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything,” the fundraiser description reads. 

The GoFundMe had raised about $196,000 of the $250,000 goal by Friday night. 

What happens next?

Valerie Watson and her children are awaiting her husband’s next court appearance, set for June 7.

Even though Ryan Watson “forgot” about the ammunition in his bag, he may not be able to leave the Turks & Caicos Islands without serving time. The government prohibits anyone, of status or origin, to possess a firearm, ammunition, or any other weapon.

There are exceptions to this, of course, but the court is still required to issue “both a sentence of imprisonment and a fine” that are in line with what the court would consider an “exceptional circumstance,” USA TODAY reported. 

The Turks & Caicos government stiffened the penalties for firearm possession in February, noting that there were a handful of cases involving "exceptional circumstances" that allowed accused people to get away with paying a fine. “exceptional circumstances."

Officials in Japan's Fujikawaguchiko town have blocked panoramic views and a popular selfie spot near Mount Fuji. A mesh net, approximately 2.5m high and 20m long, will also be placed at the site, media reports said.

The decision to block the view was taken to tackle unruly behaviour by tourists who visit the place to take pictures of the iconic mountain peak, a report with the Independent stated.

The construction of the mesh net will start next week, the report quoted a local official as saying.

Photo spots, particularly one offering a view of Mount Fuji behind a Lawson convenience store in Yamanashi prefecture, off late been seen flooded with badly behaved tourists.

Speaking to The Japan Times, a Fujikawaguchiko official termed the move "regrettable", and said they were forced to do this "because of some tourists who can't respect rules".

The official complained that the tourists leave litter behind and ignore traffic regulations despite warnings.

The decision to install the net will protect the town's infrastructure and preserve the tranquillity of the area, the official added.

In March this year, it was reported that Japan would start collecting an entry fee of å2,000 (Rs 1,041.54 in Indian currency) per person to limit the number of trekkers to Mount Fuji.

The fee for climbers was expected to begin from July 1, this year, when the year's climbing season begins.

Earlier, officials in Japan's Geisha district in Kyoto had announced they would shut down access to "paparazzi" tourists who harass and trouble globally recognised Japanese women artists.

Also, the historic Gion district's local council last month said it was banning sightseers and tourists into the alleys and streets housing geisha and maiko (teenage trainee geisha) after facing years of complaints over the growing buzz of photography. American tourist facing possible 12-year prison sentence after ammo found in luggage in Turks and Caicos

Valerie Watson returned to Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport in tears on Tuesday morning in a drastic departure from how she imagined her long weekend trip to Turks and Caicos would end.

Watson is home, but her husband, Ryan Watson, was jailed on the island and is facing a potential mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years behind bars after airport security allegedly found four rounds of hunting ammo in his carry-on bag earlier this month. 

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News. "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

Valerie Watson, who learned Sunday she would not be charged and would be allowed to return home, said the trip "went from what was supposed to be a dream vacation to a nightmare."

Ryan Watson was released on bail after two nights , but must remain on the island and check in with police twice a week.

The Watsons are not the only ones going through this ordeal.

Bryan Hagerich is awaiting trial after ammo was found in the Pennsylvania man's checked bag in February.

"I subsequently spent eight nights in their local jail. Some of the darkest, hardest times of my life, quite frankly," Hagerich said. "These last 70 days have been kind of a roller coaster, just the pain and suffering of having your family at home and I'm here."

Possessing a gun or ammunition is prohibited in Turks and Caicos, but tourists were previously often able to just pay a fine. In February, however, a court order mandated that even tourists in the process of leaving the country are subject to prison time.

Since November 2022, eight firearms and ammunition prosecutions in total have been brought involving tourists from the United States, three of which are currently before the court with each of the defendants on bail.

Last year, a judge found Michael Grim from Indiana had "exceptional circumstances" when he pleaded guilty to accidentally having ammunition in his checked bag. He served almost six months in prison. 

"No clean running water. You're kind of exposed to the environment 24/7," he told CBS News. "Mosquitoes and tropical illnesses are a real concern. There's some hostile actors in the prison."

The judge was hoping to send a message to other Americans. 

"[His] sentencing was completely predicated on the fact that I was an American," Grim said. 

The U.S. embassy last September posted a travel alert online, warning people to "check your luggage for stray ammunition," noting it would "not be able to secure your release from custody."

In a statement, a State Department spokesperson told CBS News, "We are aware of the arrest of U.S. citizens in Turks and Caicos.  When a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. In a foreign country, U.S. citizens are subject to that country's laws, even if they differ from those in the United States." 

Last year, TSA found a record 6,737 guns at airport security checkpoints, and most of them were loaded.  

"I can't even begin to think that this very innocent, regrettable mistake would prevent me from being able to watch my son graduate or teach him to shave or take my daughter to dances," Ryan Watson said. "It's just unfathomable. I do not — I can't process it."

The Turks and Caicos government responded to CBS News in a lengthy statement confirming the law and reiterating that, even if extenuating circumstances are found to be present, the judge is required to mandate prison time.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

British tourist in intensive care after shark attack

Officials say beach closures will allow the coastguard and Department of Fisheries to investigate the incident and "neutralise the shark threat, if possible".

A British tourist is in intensive care after being attacked by a shark in Trinidad and Tobago.

The incident on Friday, which occurred near the Starfish Resort in Courland Bay, prompted the government to shut seven beaches and a marine park along the northwestern coast of the Caribbean island.

The shark appeared to be a bull shark, according to the Tobago House of Assembly, and was 8-10ft long and 2ft wide.

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said the victim was a 64-year-old British man, adding he was in a "stable" condition but had suffered severe injuries to his arm, thigh and stomach.

A local official named him as Peter Smith, from Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire.

"Some reattachments were done, of fingers for example, and hopefully that will save those fingers," Mr Augustine said in a news conference.

"We know that there's significant wounds on one of his legs that cannot be completely closed, but he will require extensive work.

A $10,000 (£8,000) bounty was initially offered to anyone who could capture the shark, but this was later retracted.

Shark attacks in Tobago a rarity

Many experts consider bull sharks to be among the most dangerous in the world.

Historically, they are one of the three species most likely to attack humans, alongside great whites and tiger sharks, according to the National Geographic.

But their presence is rarely felt in Tobago.

In fact, there have only been two other shark attacks there in the past 20 years, data from Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File shows.

One of those - a non-fatal attack in 2004 - was a bull shark.

They are far more frequent off the eastern and southern US coasts and in the central Caribbean.

Bull sharks get their name from their short, blunt snout, as well as their aggressive disposition and a tendency to head-butt their prey before attacking, the National Geographic says.

Stephanie Wright, a British tourist who saw the attack, said she noticed people gathering on the beach and thought they may have been aiding someone who had suffered a cardiac arrest.

"Then I saw a dorsal fin come out of the sea and I went: 'Oh my God, it's a shark'. And as it turned I saw the tail come out as well."

Orion Jakerov, watersports manager at the Starfish Resort, also witnessed the incident and said the man was about waist-deep in the water when the shark attacked.

He told local media the man and others near him in the water had their backs turned and did not see the shark approaching.

"The other people in the water were physically trying to fight the shark off while it attacked," he added.

In a statement the government said shark sightings were reported in the Grafton area and the Buccoo Reef Marine Park.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of an injured British man in Tobago and are in contact with the local authorities."

Last year, there were 69 unprovoked attacks and 22 provoked bites worldwide, along with 14 fatalities, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.
