Golden Outback
Coral coast, perth and surrounds.
Remote, ancient and wild – The Kimberley region of Western Australia’s North West corner, spanning an area almost twice the size of Victoria, is Australia at its most challenging and most rewarding. For the intrepid visitor prepared to seek out its treasures it offers adventure and spectacular experiences with dramatic landscapes, stunning natural features and curiosities, all interwoven with the art and legends of Aboriginal culture and heritage.
Western Australia is the country’s largest State, representing a third of Australia’s land area. When you realise that over half of that expanse falls within just one region – WA’s Golden Outback – you begin to get a sense of scale of just how vast this huge slice of Western Australia is and of course, how much there is to discover. Stretching from the South Australia border across the Nullarbor Plain it takes in the south eastern coastline and encompasses the Western Australian Wheatbelt to the east of Perth and the fields of wildflowers that WA is famous for, and reaches to just south of the Tropic of Capricorn.
Western Australia’s Coral Coast – mid way along the Western Australia coastline – extends for over 1000km. Take the Indian Ocean Drive from Cervantes in the south, some 2 hours north of Perth, up to the Coral Coast’s main centre of Geraldton and onto Exmouth in the north. The sea is bluer here, the skies clearer and the rich colours of the coastline make this drive an adventure to fill the senses with extraordinary natural sights both onshore and underwater and unforgettable experiences including hand feeding dolphins in the wild and swimming with whale sharks.
It’s sunset – a favourite time in the Western Australia capital of Perth when you can watch the sun go down over the ocean from one of the city’s 19 beaches; see the shiny glass towers of the city glisten as you take in the view from Kings Park overlooking the city centre; or maybe seeing the city skyline from aboard a sunset cruise on the broad expanse of the Swan River.
A glorious coastline of rocky outbreaks that frame pristine white beaches and sapphire blue seas together with the food and especially the wine of the Margaret River wine region are just some of the highlights awaiting when you explore WA’s South West. From Perth it’s an easy three-hour drive south to Busselton and the start of the Margaret River. Busselton offers up a postcard setting by the seaside – a long white sandy beach, the calm clear blue seas of Geographe Bay and an endlessly long jetty complete with miniature train and an underwater observatory.

In Wadjuk country, way out west in the Indian Ocean breeze, Perth regularly attracts that most easy-going of adjectives – 'livable'. Under a near-permanent canopy of blue sky, life here unfolds at a pleasing pace. Throw in superb beaches, global eats and booming small-bar and street-art scenes, and Perth seems downright progressive. Free from the pressures of congestion, pollution and population afflicting Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, Perth and neighbouring port town Fremantle are uncomplicated, unfettered and alive. Yes, it's the most isolated city of its size on the planet, but this remoteness fosters an outward-looking world view. Instead of heading east for their holidays, locals – who suffer the ugly, geologic-sounding moniker of 'Perthites' – travel to Bali, the Maldives, Singapore, Sri Lanka… Currency-exchange reports include the Indian rupee, while the Perth-to-London 'Dreamliner' direct flight delivers Europe's virtues in a tick under 17 hours. Forget about isolation: Perth is going places.

Romantic Things to do in Perth City
1. Helicopter Ride 🚁

Enjoy a six-minute scenic helicopter ride over Perth with your loved one. This scenic flight takes you over Perth’s iconic sites, including Kings Park, Optus Stadium, Elizabeth Quay, and the Swan River, perfect for celebrating any occasion.
2. Gondola Ride 🚤
Romantic Gondola rides are not just for Venice. Perth has its very own Gondola tour , which departs from Elizabeth Quay.
Despite being modelled on the traditional Venice gondolas, this one is very much Western Australian. The hand-crafted vessel was designed and made in Perth from solid Western Red Cedar.
This special romance package includes:
- 60 minute gondola cruise
- Bottle of premium French sparkling wine
- Red rose and chocolates
3. Rooftop Bars 🍸
I love rooftop bars and always hunt them out on our trips. Perth has some cool ones of their own, some with scenic views of the city and Swan River, making a romantic afternoon or evening.
Some of my favourite rooftop bars in Perth are:
- 18 Knots Rooftop Bar @ DoubleTree by Hilton Waterfront
- Rooftop at QT
- Songbird Bar @ The Ritz
- Aurora Rooftop Bar @ The Melbourne
- Henry’s Rooftop @ The Reveley
- AGWA Rooftop Bar
4. Watch the Sunset 🌅
Pack a picnic and head up to Kings Park to watch the sunset over the city. It’s one of the most romantic spots in Perth and the location for many weddings, including ours.
5. Moonlit Outdoor Cinema 🍿
Kings Park is also the location of Moonlit Cinema, held during summer at May Drive Parkland, showing the latest releases, contemporary and classic movies.
6. Private Water Bike Tour & Picnic 🚲
This water bike tour is perfect for a special celebration or romantic date – glide along the river and see the spectacular views of Perth’s city skyline. After, relax with a beautifully styled, fully catered picnic on the banks of the Swan River overlooking the city.
These water bikes are safe, stable, easy to use, and suitable for most ages and abilities.
If you don’t want a picnic, there’s also a Sunset, Bubbles, and Brews Water Bike Tour .
7. Harvest Your Own Pearl Experience
Barrack Square, Elizabeth Quay
This unique experience allows you to harvest your own pearl straight from the oyster. Your guide will reveal fascinating information about pearl harvesting and techniques while you sip on sparkling wine and enjoy canapés.
You will then harvest your own pearl, valued between A$500 and A$5,000, which you get to keep.
The private hour tour ensures a romantic and personalized experience ideal for a couple.
Family Things to do in Perth City
1. Perth Zoo 🐒
20 Labouchere Road, South Perth
Not technically in the City of Perth, but only a short ten-minute ferry ride from Elizabeth Quay to South Perth . Home to more than 1200 native and exotic animals, including some of Australia’s most endangered species, Perth Zoo is one of the most popular Perth attractions.
2. Perth Mint 💰
310 Hay Street
The Perth Mint is Australia’s official bullion mint, built in the 19th century to refine gold from the Gold Rush. It’s a popular tourist attraction where you can take a tour and buy souvenirs, including Australian coins, gold, silver, and platinum. The mint is housed in a grand heritage building, one of Western Australia’s oldest heritage sites.
3. WA Museum Boola Bardip 🇦🇺
Perth Cultural Centre
The WA Museum closed in 2016 and re-opened in November 2020 under the new and improved name Boola Bardip , meaning “many stories” in Whadjuk Nyoongar. It’s one of the best Perth museums to visit.
Our favourite exhibition is Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn, where you learn about Aboriginal culture, ancestral connections, law and lore, and their experiences. Don’t miss the huge blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling in the heritage-listed Hackett Hall.
4. Water Labyrinth 💦
Forrest Place, Murray Street Mall
Children will love running through this interactive water sculpture by Danish artist Jeppe Hein. Jets spray water into the air, creating nine “rooms” that allow you to stay dry until the water stops. You can watch from one of the cafes overlooking the Water Labyrinth while your kids cool down on a warm day.
It runs daily from 10 am to 6 pm unless there’s an event in Forrest Place.
Remember to bring dry clothes for the kids!
5. BHP Waterpark 💧
This Elizabeth Quay water playground is an excellent space for families to enjoy an interactive water feature that uses jets and lighting. Parents and carers can relax on one of the benches or the decking.
6. Heirisson Island 🦘
You can visit Heirisson Island as part of the 10 km Bridges walk or from Riverside Drive (access is via The Causeway Bridge). The island is an important part of Nyoongar heritage, and you’ll see a statue of Whadjuk Nyoongar warrior Yagan which represents his strong leadership and resistance fighting during the early settlement of the Swan River Colony.
You may see some Western Grey Kangaroos on the island, which were brought onto the island in 1998.
7. Kings Park’s Playgrounds 🛝
Head up to Kings Park for a choice of playgrounds – Rio Tinto Nature Playground, May Drive Parkland, Poolgarla Family Area, and Saw Avenue Picnic Area. Our girls loved the nature playground and the “dinosaur” playground (aka May Drive Playground) the best when they were younger, and we spent hours there.
8. DFES Education & Heritage Centre 🚒
25 Murray Street
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Education and Heritage Centre is housed in Perth’s first purpose-built fire station, which operated from 1901 to 1979. This museum has interactive displays, historical documents, and a fire engine to explore.
DFES’s Education and Heritage Centre is open from 10 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and is free to enter.
Fun Things to do in Perth City
1. catamarans ⛵️.
Funcats Watersports hire catamarans that you can sail around the Swan River in. Our family enjoys this activity, and they’re easy to use as long as you listen to the instructions and pay attention to the wind direction.
2. Wander the Laneways ☕️
Spend a fun morning wandering around the laneways in Perth.
Wolf Lane is one of the coolest, with street art, restaurants, bars, and coffee.
Howard Lane is another trendy lane with bars and street art.
For boutiques, Shafto Lane has you covered, and you can stop for some lunch and a drink at one of the eateries along the way.
McLean Lane, behind the Pier Street Car Park, features artworks, original cobblestones, stunning feature lighting, and Hifumiya, Perth’s first Japanese udon noodle house.
3. Bridge Climb 🌉
The 370m suspension pedestrian Matagarup Bridge provides access between East Perth and Burswood. The bridge quickly became a Perth icon and lights up in different colours to support major local, state, and international events.
Matagarup, meaning a place where the river is only leg deep, allowing it to be crossed, is the name given by traditional land owners to the area around Heirisson Island. The flowing arches represent the Wagyl, a water-serpent of great importance to local Noongar culture, and a pair of swans.
4. Sky Dive 🪂
Riverside Drive
Tick sky diving off your bucket list with this 14,000 ft Perth city sky dive where you’ll experience 60 seconds of freefall. Float over the coast and see stunning aerial views of the Swan Valley and Perth.
5. Bottomless Brunch 🥂
The Bottomless Brunch has been a favourite fun thing to do lately. There are many places where you can enjoy a boozy brunch in Perth. Some of the most popular are:
- Prince Lane
- The Stables
- Market Grounds
- C Restaurant
6. Strike Bowling & Escape Room 🎳
Forrest Chase
Strike Forrest Chase offers ten bowling lanes, two karaoke rooms, and two escape rooms.

Cheap Things to do in Perth City
Perth has many natural attractions, cultures, and buildings to explore that are entirely free or cheap.
1. Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan)
In Dreamtime, the Darling Scarp represents the body of the Wagyl (rainbow serpent/snake), who created rivers, waterways, and lakes – including the Swan River.
Situated on the edge of Perth’s CBD, the riverside has dual-use paths where you can walk, ride, or skate. The 10 km ‘bridges’ walk around the river (crossing at the Narrows Bridge and the Causeway Bridge) will take about two and a half hours. Allow time to stop for photos, a coffee in South Perth, a detour to Heirisson Island, a drink at The Point, or a gelato at Elizabeth Quay .
If that sounds too much, hop on the ferry from Elizabeth Quay to South Perth and walk from there.
Alternatively, hire a bike from About Bike Hire and ride around the river. It’s an easy flat ride, suitable for children.
If you’re a water sports enthusiast, you can sail, windsurf and kayak along the river. There are a couple of places on the Swan River that hire out kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards – Funcats Watersports in South Perth and About Bike Hire near The Point, in the Point Fraser Causeway car park.
The Swan River is a great place to see the sunset in the city and beautiful at night when lights reflect on the river in South Perth.
2. Barracks Archway
Elder Street & Malcolm St
Walk to the top of St George’s Terrace to view this iconic historic building, once part of a large military barracks designed by Richard Jewell. It was built by convict labour in 1866 to accommodate the Enrolled Pensioner Force (also known as ‘Pensioner Guards’), who guarded the convicts on the prisoner ships to Western Australia. These British soldiers had an option to continue as convict guards or remain as settlers with a 10-acre plot of land.
Most of the convict work moved from Fremantle to Perth around 1860, so accommodation was required for the Enrolled Pensioners and their families. The Pensioners’ Barracks, built in a Tudor gothic castle style, had two wings and 120 rooms.
Between 1900 and 1904, the Barracks were converted to offices for The Public Works Department, which remained there until 1966.
Unbelievably most of this beautiful building was demolished in 1966 to make way for the Mitchell Freeway, leaving just the entrance. Unfortunately, the Brand government wanted to remove the arch, as the entrance is known, so Parliament House had a clear view down St. George’s Terrace. Thankfully, the public won, and the arch remained.
Other buildings designed by Richard Roach Jewell are boys’ schools in Perth and Fremantle, Wesley Church, the oldest section of the Treasury Buildings, Perth Town Hall, Perth Goal, and Government House.
3. Government House
13 St Georges Terrace
Perth’s Government House is a heritage-listed home of the Governor of Western Australia and a place for visiting dignitaries to stay. It is the second permanent Government House – the first built in 1837 was deemed inadequate by the fifth Governor of Western Australia, Governor Arthur Edward Kennedy (1855-1862), due to leaking roofs, termites, and porous walls.
The Foundation stone of the second building was laid on 17th March 1859, but was not completed until 1864. Designed by Lieutenant Colonel E.Y.W. Henderson in a Jacobean style, Government House has a Gothic feel and is one of the finest heritage buildings in Perth.
The beautiful 3.2 hectare garden is open to the public every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 12 pm and 2 pm (except for Public Holidays or otherwise advised).
4. St. Mary’s Cathedral – Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Victoria Square
Bishop of Perth Rosendo Salvado laid the foundation stone of St Mary’s Cathedral in 1863, which was blessed and opened in 1865. The architect and master mason, Joseph Ascione, designed the cathedral in the Norman Gothic style.
In 1924, Bishop Patrick Clune CSsR, the first Archbishop of Perth, started to raise funds for a new Cathedral. The foundation stone was laid in April 1926 and opened (despite being incomplete) four years later. Architect Mr. MF Cavanagh designed it in the English Perpendicular Gothic style with large stained glass windows.
It wasn’t until 2006 that the Cathedral was closed to complete the construction and reopened in December 2009.
5. St. George’s Cathedral
38 St Georges Terrace
St George’s Cathedral is the principal cathedral of the Anglican Province of WA and the metropolitical Diocese of Perth. It was designed by Sydney architect Edmund Blacket and is a great example of Victorian Academic Gothic architecture, one of only a few cathedrals constructed of handmade bricks.
The foundation stone was laid on 2nd November 1880, but the first service wasn’t until August 1888.
In June 2001, the cathedral was listed on the Western Australia Heritage Register.
6. Street Art
If you’re looking for some amazing Perth Street Art , take a walk around the city. There’s art everywhere – it’s easy to find in the lanes and streets. There are not only works of art by Australian artists but many international ones.
A great tour is this Perth Street Art Tour by Two Feet and a Heartbeat, Perth’s number one tour company since 2007. Over the two hours, your guide will take you around Perth’s streets and laneways showing you murals, sculptures, and architecture.
7. Art Collective WA
Cathedral Square
This not-for-profit organisation is run by leading Western Australian contemporary artists. You can visit the gallery to view their artwork and buy any that catch your eye.
Open Wednesday to Friday 11 am – 4 pm and Saturday 12 pm – 4 pm or by appointment.
8. City of Perth Library
573 Hay Street/ Cathedral Square
Pop into Perth’s city library to relax, read the paper or a magazine, or have a coffee in the café. Visitors can explore the ceiling artwork, outdoor terrace, and floors for young adults and children.
9. Kings Park
Kings Park is a picturesque, inner city park offering panoramic views of the Swan River, city, and Darling Range. The flower and plant displays in the botanical gardens are stunning, and the picnic areas on the landscaped lawns are beautiful. There are also extensive playgrounds for children to enjoy themselves, and it’s all free!
Kings Park is one of Perth’s most popular tourist attractions, with six million visitors annually from around Australia and overseas.
10. Jacob’s Ladder
1 Cliff Street, West Perth
Jacobs Ladder, just outside Kings Park, is a popular place for a workout in Perth. At most times of the day, you’ll see people running up and down the 242 stairs. It’s one of the ways to access Kings Park from the city on foot.
11. Stirling Gardens
Corner of St George’s Terrace and Barrack Street
This small historical park, next to Government House, is the oldest garden in the City of Perth. Colonial botanist James Drummond first used the area as an acclimatisation garden in the 1830s, and in 1845 it became Perth’s first botanical garden. The gardens are named after Governor James Stirling, the first Governor of Western Australia.
You will find kangaroo sculptures, a huge Moreton Bay Fig tree, and a water feature in Stirling Gardens. It’s a quiet escape from the city – I used to enjoy having lunch under the shade of the trees when I worked in Perth.
12. Supreme Court Gardens
2 Barrack Street
Supreme Court Gardens, close to the Swan River and Elizabeth Quay, are over 100 years old and feature mature trees and garden beds. The area was planted in 1920 following the reclamation of the Swan River in 1903.
This park has public toilets and plenty of benches to rest while enjoying the flora.
The Supreme Court and the old Court House, the oldest building in the city, are in the gardens, which connect to Stirling Gardens.
13. John Oldham Park & David Carr Memorial Park (Narrows Interchange Park)
Mounts Bay Road
These pretty parks are linked by a passage under the Narrows Bridge, close to the city. Hidden away here, you will find beautiful waterfalls, water features, a playground, walking and cycling paths, barbecues, toilets, and exercise equipment.
14. Elizabeth Quay
Head to Elizabeth Quay for a nice walk around the inlet with restaurants and cafes, bars, playgrounds, luxury hotels, and boat tours.
15. London Court
647 Hay Street
This open-air shopping arcade sometimes has art installations and fake snow at Christmas (summertime for us!). Built by wealthy gold businessman Claude de Bernales in 1937, the Elizabethan-inspired arcade is a contrast to the modern Hay Street Mall.

Perth City or Perth CBD is the central business district in Perth , but there are plenty of other things to see than just tall buildings and busy men in suits.
Understand [ edit ]
The centre of Perth metropolitan area is the City or CBD , Central Business District, located on the Swan River around 10 km (6.2 mi) inland. It's the main business and shopping centre, and together with adjacent Northbridge , forms the entertainment centre.
The City extends about 1 km north-south and 2 km east-west. The pedestrianised Forrest Place, and Murray Street and Hay Street malls are interconnected through arcades, and have a range of shops and services.
At Forrest Place you will find the General Post Office (GPO, open Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM and Saturday 9AM-noon), the Tourist Information Centre, Perth Train Station and the Forrest Chase shopping centre including Myer Department store.
The main east-west streets are Wellington Street (northern boundary), Murray and Hay Streets (which become pedestrianised shopping malls in the centre), St Georges Terrace/Adelaide Terrace and Riverside Drive (which runs along the Swan River and forms the southern boundary of the CBD). The main northbound street is Barrack Street which runs along the eastern end of the central shopping district, and the main southbound street is William Street to the west.
Get in [ edit ]
By train, bus and car [ edit ]
The City has the main transport hubs for the metropolitan area, and the airport buses run downtown along Adelaide Terrace to Elizabeth Quay. See Perth#Get around for more information.
By ferry [ edit ]
A ferry makes the short hop across the Swan River, running between Barrack St Jetty on the City bank and Mends St Jetty in South Perth. This is the most direct route across the river to South Perth, the Old Mill or the Zoo - however the Zoo is a bit of an uphill hike from Mends St jetty, you may prefer the bus. Ferries run every 15 min weekdays and 30 min on weekends. You will need a 2-section ticket for $2.20 to go one way across.
Get around [ edit ]
Transperth info-centres provide timetables and journey advice for all its services at the central train station, Wellington Street bus station, the Esplanade Busport (south of St. Georges Terrace, near the bell tower), and Plaza Arcade in the city centre (the Plaza Arcade can be found between the Hay and Murray St malls - if walking from St. Georges Terrace, walk up London Court and across the Hay St mall; the Plaza Arcade is located directly opposite the exit to London Court).
By bus [ edit ]
Transperth buses are free within the city centre Free Transit Zone. The zone is bounded to the north by Newcastle Street, to the west by Thomson Street, to the east by the loop beyond Plain Street, and to the south by the river. In addition there are four CAT bus routes that are free throughout, every 5 to 15 min from around 6AM to 7PM . You don't need a permit or Smartrider for any of these, just get on. The bus stops have route maps and show arrival time of the next bus. See www.transperth.wa.gov.au for timetable and a detailed route map.
The five lines are:
- Red CAT runs an east-west loop and stops at Royal Perth Hospital, WACA cricket ground, Perth Mint, Wellington Square, the Murray St Mall/Perth Underground train station, His Majesty's Theatre, Parliament House, King St and Wellington St bus station & central train station.
- Yellow CAT runs east-west from Thomson Street, past City West metro train station, along the length of Wellington Street past central bus & train station to WACA, then Claisebrook metro station.
- Blue CAT runs north from Elizabeth Quay up Barack Street past Murray Street mall and the art gallery and museum, then curls through northern streets before returning south past the central bus & train stations.
- Green CAT (Monday-Friday only) runs from Elizabeth Quay west past King's Park and the Botanic Gardens, then heads north to City West and Leederville metro stations.
- Purple CAT (every day) runs from the Elizabeth Quay bus station up St George's Terrace, past King's Park, past the QE2 hospital to the university of Western Australia and stop by the Abraham's reserve by the river. It runs as a loop service, every 10 minutes in peak hours and wvery 20 minutes at other times and weekends. No tickets needed.
By train [ edit ]
You're unlikely to use the train for journeys just within the city centre, the bus is generally more convenient. Train journeys within the Free Transit Zone (eg the loop from central station via Perth Underground to the Esplanade) are free only if you have a Smartrider or other valid ticket; otherwise you will need a 2 section ticket for $0.60 to go one way.
Train is a good way to reach other districts such as Fremantle, see those districts "Get in / around".

- -31.9595 115.8343 1 Kings Park & Botanic Gardens ( 2 km west of CBD, follow St George's Terrace onto Malcolm St ). 24/7 . Ranged along the ridge of Mount Moira, this large and lush park is the perfect place to escape the city and enjoy a panorama of the Swan River and surrounds. Multiple paths wind through gardens showcasing flora from different regions of WA including a boab tree brought down on the back of a truck from the Kimberly. The striking War Memorial and Flame of Remembrance are also here. It's a hot, uphill, 2-km walk from downtown, but its northern boundary at Kings Park Rd is within the Free Transit Zone. Handiest bus is the Green CAT, M-F only, to Stop 16. Red CAT (7 days) also runs nearby, use Stop 19 on Ord Street. Free . ( updated Nov 2017 )

- -31.95224 115.84888 6 Barracks Arch , Cnr of Malcolm and Elder Sts ( E end of St. Georges Tce ). Equally loved and loathed by residents this arch is all that remains of the 1866 Tudor style accommodations for soldiers of the Enrolled Pensioner Guard. The two wings were demolished in 1966 to make way for the Mitchel Freeway but public protests held back the wrecking ball from dispatching this part of Perth's history. Free .
- -31.95597 115.8599 7 Kangaroos in the City , Cnr Barrack St and St Georges Tce . If you don't get the chance to see some real ones, do like everyone else and take a photo with these friendly Roos. The larger than life size bronze kangaroo sculptures were installed in 1997, and have become a magnet for international visitors, who are subsequently disappointed with the diminutive size of their real life counterparts. Free .
- -31.96565 115.88287 8 Heirisson Island . Five to six wild kangaroos roam around this island in the Swan River. They are usually hiding in the bushes, but can come out so have your cameras ready. - -31.95723 115.86926 9 Perth Mint , 310 Hay Street . The nation's oldest operating mint and one of the oldest mints in the world. You can buy and sell gold, jewellery and souvenirs, see the mint in operation and watch molten gold being poured to create gold bars. (Walk from City Centre along Hay Street east or catch the red CAT) $19 .
- -31.959 115.85818 10 The Swan Bells . A bell tower is at the foot of Barrack Street, in front of the ferry wharf. The bells are from the church of St Martin-in-the-Field in London, and were a gift from the London to the people of Perth. - -31.95262 115.87863 12 Claisebrook Cove . A major urban redevelopment area on the Swan River, on the fringe of the city centre. Spend an hour or so wandering about the brightly coloured, modern and strikingly unusual architecture before you wind down with a meal and a hot or cold bevy. Views of the city centre from the footbridge that runs above the cove are particularly stunning at night. (Take the yellow CAT to the Haig Park Circle stop during daylight hours or take the Midland, Armadale or Thornlie line to Claisebrook transfer station which is located within the Free Transit Zone).

Do [ edit ]
The city riverfront is a popular spot for walking, running and cycling. But for most physical activities you'll want to head to other parts of the metropolis: to the coast for beach & water sports, to Rottnest Island for more of the same, and to the hills for hiking.
Buy [ edit ]
There are three major supermarkets located in the city:

King Street has some of the more expensive shops in Perth, including Louis Vuitton and Gucci.
But at the Northern end of King Street from Murray Street to around the corner of Wellington Street you will find a mix of fantastic locally owned boutique stores with more afforable designer Australian clothing and interesting designer imported clothing and a great coffee shop. Some of the best shops to visit are Love in Tokyo, Billy and Rose, Cult Status, Zekka, Mame and Dilettante.
Hay Street and Murray Street malls are the main shopping precinct of Perth. They have a number of chain music, clothing and department stores. The two are connected by several arcades, including Carillon arcade, Plaza arcade and Picadilly arcade. These have a number of off-beat Asian fashion stores, unique jewelry shops, and even a shop which specialises in gourmet teas. Basement level of Carillon arcade has a large food court. You can go and have a free Didgeridoo Lesson at Creative Native in Forrest Chase.
People seeking alternative clothing with a dance/street bent might want to check out Narcissist clothing (located along Barrack St - just listen out for the drum & bass oozing from the stairs that lead down to this basement level shop) and Red Rover clothing (Murray St east), the former of which also sells 12" vinyls, CDs, DVDs and a small selection of DJ equipment.
Elizabeth's secondhand bookstores - along Hay St (west) near King St. There is also one located along the cappuccino strip in Fremantle which is open 'til late on weekdays, are one source of old books - Fremantle has a number of other stores as well.
Harbour Town located on Wellington Street in West Perth (Yellow Cat to Harbourtown or Train, Fremantle line to City West, within Free Transit Zone) is good for a budget shopping spree, and contains primarily outlet stores.
Eat [ edit ]
Budget [ edit ].
- Ajisan Ramen , Forrest Chase Square ( Under Myer ). A hodgepodge of Asian or Asian-style noodle soups on a big point and eat numbered menu board. The store doesn't have much style but there are seats inside. Might be worth a shot if Hans is full and you can't wait for some noodles. $10-12 .
- Carillon Arcade Foodhall , Carillon Arcade ( btwn Murray and Hay St ). Sitting well at the bottom of the budget scale is this underground food hall with various shops around a central seating area dishing up food from around the globe. There is some pretty decent healthy and fresh food here if you look and ignore the fast food outlets. $10 for something good. Less for the other choice .
- Croissant Express , Various outlets . M-F 7AM-4PM . You can't walk too far without passing one of these stores that are a good place for a cheap lunch. Baguette $6-9 .

Drink [ edit ]
Coffee [ edit ].
Perth is home to a thriving, European-style cafe culture, influenced by the large number of Italian migrants. There are a number of stylish cafes, including:
- The Moon Cafe , On William St, Northbridge . Open till late . A staple for university students, gays and coffee-house intellectuals. It has off beat interior design, an assortment of quirky lamps, retro lounges and board games. Hosts a Jazz band every Thursday. Also serves great alcoholic beverages, light meals and snacks.
- Tiger Tiger Coffee Bar , Murray Mews in the CBD . Some argue that Perth's best coffee can be found here. A remarkably serene and quiet back alley in the middle of the bustling city, it makes a nice escape. In addition, plenty of home made food is on the menu.
- Cafe on Oxford 130 , Oxford St, Leederville . Includes board games for hire, and a funky plastic outdoor setting.
- Infusion Coffee , Plaza Arcade, CBD . If you're in the city and want something a little stronger than what Gloria Jeans has to offer, then Infusion Coffee has a pretty good selection.
Bars [ edit ]
- Belgian Beer Cafe Westende , 347 Murray St, CBD ( cnr King and Murray Sts ), ☏ +61 8 9321 4094 , [email protected] . Daily 11AM-10PM, later on weekends . Has an impressive selection of imported and local beers on tap, with specialised glassware to match.
- Sassellas Tavern , Third floor Carillon Arcade, CBD , ☏ +61 8 9322 4001 . M-Sa 10:30AM-9:30PM . Has a balcony that overlooks Forest Chase, and if you're hungry they have a good selection of food that's ready in 10 minutes. The steak sandwich is good value for around $13.
- Bobby Dazzler's , 300 Murray St, CBD ( cnr Murray and William St ), ☏ +61 8 9338 5000 . 10AM-10PM daily . This quintessentially Aussie pub/restaurant (which is adorned by Australian flags as well as sporting and Aussie beer related memorabilia) serves a good selection of draft beers which are complemented nicely by some (albeit overpriced) authentic Aussie grub.
- Prince Lane Bar , 356 Murray St, CBD , ☏ +61 8 9481 3222 , [email protected] . The motto of this very impressive pub/bar is "The Spirit of Rock" and, as such, the music policy leans towards contemporary rock and pop music (when the resident DJ isn't spinning, punters can select from a wide range of tunes from a state of the art video jukebox). The towering liquor cabinets are almost two stories high and as one might imagine, the draft beer, cocktail and "shooter" list is equally as monumental (Carnegie's has the longest cocktails list in Perth according to local press) and it is all complemented by a friendly and outgoing team of bar-staff. Tuesday night is quiz and $6 pints night whilst Wednesday nights feature half-price cocktails from 6PM.
Clubs [ edit ]
- Amplifier Bar/Capitol Nightclub . Head here late on a Saturday night for some indie dance hits and an eclectic crowd.
- Ambar , 104 Murray St . Friday or Saturday night . This unpretentious bar/club serves some very tasty cocktails to complement its uber-cool music policy. The crowd has a friendly and "up for it" attitude.
- Nowhere , Cnr Murray Street, Irwin St . An alternative/gothic nightclub. Little to no entry standards, show up however you please, baring plenty of skin. Fun atmosphere, friendly and interesting people. Club plays a variety of music, mostly centered on metal, gothic rock, industrial/electronic rock and punk. Drinks are very expensive, with the standard price of a cocktail being $17.

Visit Western Australia's Capital City Of Perth
Welcome to Perth, the sunniest capital city in Australia! I am excited to share with you my comprehensive travel guide to this beautiful city. Whether you are a nature enthusiast or a city dweller, there is something here for everyone. From its beaches to its hiking trails and its vibrant nightlife, Perth is a city like no other. Having lived in Perth for a few years, I have a real soft spot for this great Australian city. I actually met my husband in Western Australia and we find ourselves in Perth frequently visiting family and friends.

If you haven’t yet visited Perth – Its time!
Introduction to Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia. Located on the Swan River, the city is home to a population of over two million people (80% of WA's population) and is known for its vibrant culture and relaxed lifestyle.
With its mostly pleasant climate and diverse landscapes, Perth is the perfect destination for a holiday or business trip. I say mostly pleasant because it can on the rare occasion get really hot. I’ve spent summers in Perth with multiple days over 40 degrees, and while it doesn’t happen often it can so be aware.
The city is renowned for its beautiful beaches, which are a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. From its white sands and turquoise waters to its picturesque sunsets, Perth's beaches offer something for everyone. Not to mention, the surrounding area is also home to some of Australia's best hiking trails, allowing you to explore the great outdoors.
Weather and Seasons In Perth
Summer in perth.
Perth endures warm and arid summers with little or no rainfall.
Average summer temperatures fluctuate between 17.5 and 30 degrees Celsius. February typically emerges as the warmest month, boasting an average high of 31.6 degrees Celsius.
As the capital city of WA, Perth often experiences strong afternoon breezes, known as the Fremantle Doctor on clear summer days, which can cause the sea to become quite turbulent. The wind can get very strong so beaches should be visited early in the morning before the doctor arrives.
The sea temperature over the summer months varies from 20.9 to 22.8 degrees Celsius and hits its highest average of 23.4 degrees Celsius in March, so the ocean does stay quite cool.
On average, there are 25.8 days per year with temperatures exceeding 35°C, and 3.6 days per year with temperatures exceeding 40°C.
Winter In Perth
In Perth, winter temperatures are variable, but typically, July is the chilliest month, with an average high of 18.4 degrees Celsius.
Winter temperature variations are narrower than in summer, with highs generally between 16 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius, with lows between 3 degrees Celsius and 13 degrees Celsius.
Perth's wet season is also in winter which as a Queenslander was really hard for me to get my head around. It seemed really unfair to have the rain and the cold in the same season, but really the rain usually comes for a few days at a time and then disappears. Its not set in for weeks like some cities.
Spring and Autumn In Perth
Spring and Autumn typically have the same temperatures with Spring warming up and Autumn cooling off. You can expect temps in the middle of spring or autumn (fall) to be around 18-20 degrees C with much cooler nights.
It can still get down to 8-10 degrees at night at the start of spring but will move into the double digits before too long.
Likewise Autumn can still be warm until at least April with Easter typically being the last great weather before it really starts to cool down.
With an average daily sunshine duration of 8.8 hours, Perth enjoys approximately 3,200 hours of sunshine each year and has 138.7 days of clear skies on average, claiming the title of Australia's most sun-drenched capital city.

The tree was trucked down to Perth where trees were trimmed, power lines dropped and parking cleared for its journey through the inner city.

The WA Government has a great website the showcases everything to see and do in Kings Park .

The Museum Of Perth
While I am not always a massive fan of Museums, the Museum of Perth does a great job of chronicling the social, cultural, political, and architectural history of Perth, Western Australia.
Situated in the heart of the city, the museum serves as a reflective lens into the past, offering visitors a way of understanding of the city's evolution from its early days to the present.
The museum's exhibits feature a collection of photographs, maps, historical documents, and multimedia displays that bring the stories of Perth's people, places, and events to life.
The photographic collections are particularly compelling, offering a visual journey through the changing face of Perth's streetscapes and landmarks. The museum also houses a collection of oral histories, providing personal narratives that add depth and texture to the visitor's understanding of the city's development.
There is a great exhibition currently on display curated by the West Australian cycle club which showcases the fi rst crossing of the Nullabor on a bike, which was done by Arthur Richardson in 1896. If you've every driven the Nullabor you can appreciate just how challenging this must have been!
Art Gallery of WA
The Art Gallery of WA is a great way to see some of the best art Western Australia produces. They have displays that are traditional paint and more interactive showcases as well.
From Indigenous artworks to contemporary award winners, the gallery has a wide range of art to see. They hold regular events and also have a wonderful store where you can purchase clothing, accessories and even fake nails designed by local artists.
I bought a lovely blouse about 3 years ago that I still wear today. Before you get to Perth you might want to purchase a first nations book to help you learn all about the local indigenous culture. The Noongar Bush Tucker book is really good.
The Gallery does rotate through different installations and displays so its best to check their w ebsite for what's currently on.
Fremantle Prison
Fremantle Prison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest convict-built building in the Southern Hemisphere. It was built between 1855 and 1865, and operated as a convict prison until 1991. Today, Fremantle Prison is a popular tourist attraction, offering a variety of tours and exhibits that tell the story of the prison and its inmates.

It is recommended you either purchase or book your tours during the busy times which is usually over the summer break or school holidays.
Visit Perth's Beaches
No visit to Perth would be complete without visiting its stunning beaches. From Scarborough Beach to Cottesloe Beach, the city has something for everyone. Here are some of the best beaches to explore:
Scarborough Beach
Located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Scarborough Beach is a popular destination for beachgoers and surfers alike. It features white sand and crystal-clear waters, and is the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun.
I lived in Scarborough Beach for a few years and worked at Club Atlantis which was the nightclub at Observation City Hotel. It was a great few years and I have really fond memories of Scarborough Beach in particular.
Cottesloe Beach
This beach is situated slightly south west of Perth city. It is known for its calm waters and picturesque views of the Indian Ocean. Cottesloe Beach also has a photogenic bathing pavilion that shows up in almost all photos of Cottesloe.
Parking is notoriously challenging at Cottesloe Beach so consider taking public transport from the city or getting there early to secure a park.
If you are someone who would like to get a more “all around tan” there is a beach suited to you just north of Cottesloe. Swanbourne beach “all around tanning area” is at the north end of Swanbourne beach.

Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island, affectionately known as ‘Rotto' by the locals, is a stunning island getaway just off the coast of Perth in Western Australia. Known for its tranquil turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and the adorable Quokka, a small marsupial found nowhere else on earth, the island is a popular destination for both tourists and Perth residents looking to escape the bustle of city life.
One of the island's main attractions is its unique ecosystem. Visitors can enjoy a range of outdoor activities such as snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, where they'll find a variety of marine life in the coral reefs.
Diving is also a popular pursuit, with shipwrecks around the island providing fascinating underwater exploration. Beware however that the waters off Rottnest are never warm. They might not be freezing but I've never swum on Rotto without having a few seconds of “whoa this isn't particularly warm”.
The island is also a haven for beach lovers, with some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in the world. The Basin, Geordie Bay, and Pinky Beach are just a few of the spots where one can relax on the soft sand or swim in the warm waters.
Getting to Rottnest Island is easy with ferries regularly departing from Fremantle, Hillarys Boat Harbour, and the city's own Barrack Street Jetty. The trip offers stunning coastal views and, if you're lucky, you might spot some dolphins along the way.
Remember that while the island is only 25kms offshore, the water can get rough particularly on the way home. Once the afternoon wind comes in it can be very choppy. If you are prone to sea sickness checking the conditions and taking some medication might be the best thing.
Once on the island, bicycles are the transport mode of choice, though there are also bus tours available for those who prefer a guided experience.
Rottnest Island is not just a day trip destination; it also offers accommodation options ranging from camping to premium lodging. However the accommodation is limited and getting a room during any school holidays, but particularly the summer break can be very challenging. Book as early as you can to secure it.
Tours for Rottnest Island
Sometimes it's just easier to do a tour. These options will allow you to have someone else organise your day on Rotto. See if there is something that suits your style and budget.
Hiking and Nature Walks in Perth
Perth is home to some of the most beautiful nature walks and hiking trails in Australia. From the King's Park Nature Trail to the Bibbulmun Track, there is something for everyone. Here are some of the best trails to explore:
King's Park Art In The Park Walk
This easy-to-moderate trail offers stunning views of the city skyline and the Swan River. It is a popular destination for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers alike. At only 2.6km it takes about half an hour plus photo time of course. This is the AllTrai ls link and if you would like something longer you could try Kings Park Perimiter trail .
Rocky Pool Walk
A short 4.8km loop trail in Kalamunda has a great rocky creek swimming hole for a cool down. It has only 200m of elevation change so suitable for most people. Find it on AllTrails here .
Perth Foreshore Trail
If you are visiting Elizabeth Quay, you could combine it with a 10km walk around Perth Foreshore. It is a loop trai l means that you start and end at the same point and at 10km long its only a few hours. The trail takes you over both Perth city bridges, along the foreshore on the city side and then along the river on the Southern side. Its a great walk with plenty of facilities along the way.
Cricket at the WACA
The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) is the home of cricket in Perth. It is home to a number of state and domestic matches, and is the perfect spot for cricket fans to catch a game. It also offers a number of activities, such as tours of the ground and lessons for aspiring cricketers.
The WACA used to be the home of Cricket in WA, however since it's redevelopment and reduction to 20,000 seats, all large international games are now played at Optus Stadium.
Aussie Rules football also used to play a lot of matches at the WACA however after the last redevelopment the ground was too small. It's been increased in size recently and there are a few football matches slated for next year (2024).
Other Sports and Sporting Events in Perth
If you are a soccer fan , consider heading down to the Fremantle city football club to watch a high level mens Soccer game. The season for soccer is winter in Australia so they will start games around the end of February. The club plays across different grounds so check out the schedul e and location of the field.
Why do I suggest Fremantle City Football Club? Fremantle area has a large number of European origin families who settled in the area. Soccer (or football) is more popular in this area and the skill level is in my personal opinion the highest in this region.
AFL is played during the winter season and both Perth Teams, The West Coast Eagles and Fremantle's Dockers are fairly competitive (for the most part). An AFL game will leave you completely confused if you've never seen it before but it can be very exciting that's for sure.
I watched heaps of AFL during my 20's as a close friend played, but I'm not up on it at all now. However – I always watch the finals series as I find that outside of American football I find AFL can be really heart stoppingly thrilling. My personal love is NRL or American football but I never miss the AFL finals season.
The West Coast Eagles play at Optus Stadium as do The Fremantle Dockers.
The Big Bash League of Cricket is played also at Optus Stadium and pending touring commitments you might be lucky enough to catch the Australian team playing a test during the summer.
The Perth Fever Netball team play at RAC Aren a during the winter months. Netball is a super fast and very quick game to watch. If you've never seen a game, check out the Fever's website for their home game schedule.
Swan Valley Wineries
Perth wineries are some of the best in the world. The Swan Valley wineries are particularly renowned for their quality and selection of wines. Swan Valley is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in Western Australia. Sandalford, for example, is one of the region's oldest and most renowned wineries. It has been producing premium wines since 1880, and is renowned for its range of award-winning wines.
The Sandalford Estate is a picturesque place to visit, as it is set amongst rolling hills and vineyards. Visitors can appreciate the history of the estate and enjoy a range of activities, from wine tastings and tours of the estate, to al fresco dining and unique experiences.
The Mandoon Estate is another renowned Swan Valley winery. It has a rich history and has been producing premium wines for over a century. The estate is home to a range of wineries, including a cellar door, a restaurant, and an amphitheatre.
Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, tours of the estate, and unique events and experiences. Mandoon Estate is renowned for its range of award-winning wines, including sparkling wines, sauvignon blancs, and shiraz.
The Swan Valley wineries offer visitors the chance to sample some of the best wines in the world. Whether you are looking for a relaxing day out, or an unforgettable experience, Perth wineries are sure to satisfy. Swan Valley wineries are renowned for their quality and selection of wines, so come and experience what Perth has to offer for yourself.
Swan Valley Wine Tours and Tastings
Its always best to leave the car at home when you are doing a winery tour. Here are some great options from Perth city for full and half day winery tours.
Venture out of Perth City
There are many things to see and do just outside of Perth city. You might like to swim with the wild dol phins , or Rockingham for a boat trip to the Shoalwater Islands or even do a tour of the Pinnacles with some stargazing thrown in.
Pinnacles Tour From Perth

- Mikhail Baryshnikov's New York is an Ode to the City's Artists
The icon celebrates and champions the boldfaced names in the city from meat purveyors to Three Star chefs.
Celebrities Hotels Editor's Pick My NYC NYC
New York City by The MICHELIN Guide
See the New York City guide
New York is an artist's paradise: from Basquiat to Warhol, the city is the perfect canvas to highlight individual talent. And one man who's conquered Manhattan with his artistic prowess is Mikhail Baryshnikov. The dancer, choreographer, and actor has lived in Gotham since the mid-1970s when he was a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) before joining the New York City Ballet in the same role. After a career spanning more than three decades—and having receiving the National Medal of Arts in 2000—Baryshnikov opened his eponymous Arts Center in Hell's Kitchen. (The premiere of their new family-friendly chamber opera, Jupiter's Journey to the Earth , is on May 10, with performances on May 11 and 12.)
However, Baryshnikov spends his time throughout the city's colorful neighborhoods from Flatiron to Chelsea to Hudson Yards. Throughout, his favorite spots have a unifying thread—an artful bend whether on the plate, on the canvas, or in the butcher's case.
Below, we caught up with the icon about his New York and what makes his picks so special.
This unassuming Basque restaurant is truly our home away from home. It is not only close by, but chefs Alex Raij and Eder Montero share Baryshnikov Arts’ mission to foster experimentation, creativity, and community. Their welcoming staff and refined dishes are always surprising and fabulous.
Eleven Madison Park
For a special night out, I'd choose Eleven Madison Park . I am not vegan, but chef Daniel Humm ’s dishes are exciting on every level. The service is immaculate and the setting is opulent. And it is quiet, which is a rare and welcome commodity in New York City restaurants.
The Sean Kelly Gallery
This gallery is the street level of one of the most beautiful buildings on the Far West Side. I check in regularly to see what's on exhibit when I'm on my way to work at Baryshnikov Arts. Kelly invariably chooses contemporary artists whose work looks great in the airy space.
When my body is complaining, I book an appointment with Evan at the westside location of this physical therapy group. It's clean, well organized, welcoming and obviously convenient.
Esposito Meat Market and Ninth Avenue International Foods
I'm not a big cook, but my wife often sends me to these two venerable New York institutions to pick up supplies for dinner. The butchers at Esposito are pros who will happily prepare any cut of meat you want, but our go-tos are the fresh sausages and chicken thighs. International Foods sells mostly Greek items with open bins of aromatic spices, buckets of feta cheese, homemade tamarsalada, and prepared spanakopita in the back...fabulous. Both places harken back to when Hell's Kitchen was a gritty neighborhood of immigrants who made - and continue to make - New York an exciting place to be.
