10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour

I had the most wonderful time on the 10 Day Wild Irish Experience. Our group was only a small one but everyone got along very well and it was oftentimes more of a family outing than strangers travelling together. Our driver/guide Lee was very invested in all of our wellbeings - making sure everyone's interests and needs were met, and then going the extra mile in the little details (like carrying our bags or providing little insider tips on what to do or where to eat for every town we stayed in). He was always available to answer any questions our group might have and could also entertain with a story or background information about a town or region while we where driving to it or through it. Especially on the often narrow and winding Irish country roads he made sure everyone was comfortable during the twists and turn and I (having the seat upfront and the best view of the landscapes and vistas but also the roads and the traffic) always felt safe and in the most capable hands with him. Even though our trip took place in the pre-season, for the most part of it we got to enjoy very lovely weather, with blazing blue skies and already emerald green hills doing their reputation justice. When one of the destinations on our itinerary wasn't open yet for the season or closed for construction (this happened only on one or two occasions out of more than thirty-five), our driver/guide knew this beforehand because he checked with all of them - and the tour operators of Irish Experience provided more than adequate alternatives so that our group didn't miss out on anything. I can only recommend this tour most wholeheartedly and to everyone. It was an excellent introduction to the Irish culture and country and the lives of Irish people and has made me want to return soon to the island. Thank you to my lovely fellow travellers - but mostly to everyone at Irish Experience and to Lee!

The smart tour itinerary hits many of the Wild Atlantic Way highlights, but driver guides make the experience. A special shout out to Anthony Dawson for his informed commentary, savvy ability to get us to key locations before the hordes of other tours, scrupulous attention to safety, great music playlists, and naturalist knowledge of birds, flora, and fauna. Patience and a great sense of humour round out the experience perfectly. (Our only damper on the overall week was a very uncomfortable bed in Dingle at one of the hotels.)

Introduction to Ireland

Wonderful trip. The guide, Tricia, was such fun and a great storyteller. We saw the many regions and visited some local venues we would never have found on our own. This was our first trip yo Ireland, and would highly recommend it. Great people, beautiful lodgings, and amazing visits. I had such a blast on this tour! While it was only 4 days, it was an incredible way to see the start of the magic that exists on the West Coast of Ireland. Do go with the expectation that the weather may not be great, and do keep those sea sickness tablets at the ready for your ferry ride to the Aran Islands. Despite both of these things, be prepared for some stunning scenery, and an itinerary that is a good blend of outdoor activities, free time, hearty food, drinks, and wonderful insight to Irish culture.

The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.

This tour was so good! We experienced more of Ireland than the itinerary indicated (because of stops we made along our journey, which I loved!), but never felt rushed. Our guide Diarmuid is such a professional - he provided us with interesting information about the places we stopped and Ireland in general, kept us on schedule with a relaxed demeanor, and is genuinely a very nice person. I've never traveled with a tour group before and this one couldn't have been any better. The Emerald Isle is so beautiful and everyone is so friendly that, even when there was a bit of rain, it was still fun. Many thanks to Mick and Diarmuid (the best!!) for making this a most memorable trip. PS the accommodations were fantastic - especially the breakfasts!

In this guide, you’ll find 1, the best day trips from Dublin for those of you with a car and 2, some great day tours from Dublin for those of you without a car .

While there are plenty of things to do in Dublin , it’s well worth exploring the wealth of attractions that lay a short distance away.

And, although the likes of Wicklow tends to be the ‘go-to’ of the Dublin day trips, there’s plenty more on offer!

Below, you’ll find organised Dublin day tours for those of you looking for someone else to do the driving and some mighty day trips from Dublin for those of you with a car.

If you’re driving, there’s countless places to visit near Dublin by car, once you know where to look.

Below, you’ll find the ‘old favourites’ like Glendalough and Newgrange, but you’ll also find some often missed Dublin day trips, like the Cooley Peninsula and more.

1. Wicklow (55-minute drive)

Also known as the ‘Garden of Ireland’, Wicklow is one of the best day trips from Dublin for good reason! Well-known for its outstanding natural beauty, the county is blessed with glittering lakes and monastic villages and ruins.

I’ve been taking half day trips from Dublin to Wicklow for years and the itinerary that I tend to use is this one:

• Head to Glendalough, first, as the car park can be a pain
• Pick one of the Glendalough walks , e.g. the Spinc Loop
• Get a post-hike lunch at the brilliant Wicklow Heather
• Head up and do the Sally Gap Drive
• Stop at Lough Tay , Ballinastoe Woods and Glenmacnass Waterfall

If you’re looking for slightly different Dublin day trips, tackle one of the longer Wicklow walks over the course of a morning and afternoon!

2. The Cooley Peninsula (1.5-hour drive)

The Cooley Peninsula is one of the more overlooked Dublin day trips. There’s plenty of things to see and do here and there’s a clatter of great places to eat.

Depending on whether or not you want to include a hike in your trip, here’s a suggested itinerary:

• Pick a walk (options – Ravensdale Forest Walk , Annaloughan Loop Walk or the Slieve Foye Loop )
• Spin into the town for breakfast/lunch (Liberty Cafe and Ruby Ellen’s are solid options)
• Take a tour of the castle or rent a bike and spin along the Carlingford Greenway)

There are heaps of other things to do in Carlingford if the options above don’t tickle your fancy!

3. Meath (35-minute drive)

County Meath is another of the best day trips from Dublin by car. It’ll take you around 35 minutes by car to reach and there’s an endless number of things to do in Meath to keep you busy.

If you’re looking for a day-out in the Boyne Valley, here’s a mini itinerary to tackle:

• Book tickets for Newgrange in advance and do the tour
• Grab lunch in nearby Inside Out in Slane
• Take a ramble around the trails in Slane Castle
• Visit the ancient Old Mellifont Abbey

Or, of you fancy seeing more of Meath, check out the Hill of Tara , one of the most important archaeological sites in the country or Trim Castle , the best-preserved of the many Anglo-Norman castles in Ireland . 

4. The Mournes (2-hour drive)

One of the more impressive places to visit near Dublin by car are the Mourne Mountains in County Down.

Now, you’ll need to do a bit of planning if you opt for this Dublin day trip, as there’ll be a fair bit of walking involved.

If you’re visiting the area for the first time, I’d  strongly  recommend heading into Tollymore Forest Park (above) and then heading for lunch in Newcastle followed by a stroll on the beach.

Or, if you fancy a hike, there’s  heaps  of Mourne Mountain walks to tackle, like the tough Slieve Donard hike .

5. The Ring of Gullion + Newry (1.5-hours)

One of the best day trips from Dublin that’s very regularly overlooked is the trip that takes in both the Ring of Gullion and a glorious corner of Rostrevor.

Start your road trip with the Slieve Gullion Drive or walk, depending on how you’re feeling (the walk is steep). Head into nearby Gather and Brew after for a bite-to-eat!

When you’re ready, take the spin out to Kilbroney Park – it’s here that you’ll find the Cloughmore Stone and the aptly named Kodak Corner.

If you’re looking for day tours from Dublin with plenty of walks, this one is hard to beat!

6. Kilkenny ( 1.5-hour drive)

Another of the best day trips from Dublin is Kilkenny. Now, while there are  plenty  of things to do in Kilkenny , many people make the mistake of think that there’s only the castle.

Head for the supposedly haunted Dunmore Cave , first, and take the tour. Then spin into the city and you have everywhere from the Smithwick’s Brewery and the castle to the Medieval Mile to choose from.

Food wise, there’s plenty of options in the city. If you need a reccy, both foodworks and Aroi Asian Fusion are worth a bash. Round off your day with a visit to Jerpoint Abbey . 

7. Options that require 2.5-hours+ driving

Although we’ve tackled several places to visit near Dublin by car above, there’s endless day tours from Dublin if you’re open to driving a bit further.

One of the more popular road trips from Dublin is to Cuilcagh (above) in Fermanagh. It’s around a 2.5-hour spin.

If you’re not afraid of a bit of driving, you could visit Waterford ( Coumshingaun Lough’s a tough but rewarding hike), Wexford and plenty more.

Finn McCools Tours – Giant's Causeway and Titanic Tour from Dublin

Travelers looking to hit several sites throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland in one day will want to consider this daytrip from Dublin. Buses depart from Dublin City Gallery on Parnell Square North at 6:45 a.m. and head to the ruins of Dunluce Castle for a photo op, followed by longer stops at Giant's Causeway – a group of thousands of basalt columns formed by a volcanic eruption, which stretches from Northern Ireland to Scotland. Next, you'll head to the Dark Hedges (an avenue of intermingling beech trees seen in the "Game of Thrones" TV series). After that, you'll spend about 1.5 hours exploring the Titanic Museum (admission is included), followed by a half-hour wandering through Belfast on your own. "Game of Thrones" fans regularly praise this tour, calling the featured stops and the stories shared by guides incredible. During this daylong outing, you'll visit the Tollymore Forest Park (the backdrop for many of the first scenes of the series), see Inch Abbey and have lunch at a local pub. The highlight of the tour is a hike through Old Castle Ward, which served as the filming location of Winterfell. Though you'll be transported to the different locations via coach, there is a lot of walking involved on the tour; patrons suggest wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Tickets, which start at 70 euros (around $74), include entrance to the castle as well as use of cloaks and other cosplay props. It does not include lunch. Note: Children younger than 12 may not take the tour and children ages 12 to 17 must have a signed parental consent form. Rural Tours – Dublin Mountain Pub Tour

After you've had your fill of the pubs in central Dublin, check out what the rural pubs have to offer on this five-hour evening tour. You'll visit three rural pubs, including one of Ireland's oldest and most highly elevated. Tour-takers find the guides entertaining and hospitable and the beer and music first-rate. Tickets cost 45 euros (about $48), which includes transportation from and back to Dublin. Tours run on various days depending on the season and start at 6:30 p.m. year-round; they usually end around 11:30 p.m. Check the company's website or Viator for schedules and booking availability. The Dublin Dark Side Tour explores the spookier side of Ireland's folklore and legends. The 2.5-hour walk through cemeteries and back alleys (as well as to landmarks like St. Patrick's Cathedral and Dublin Castle ) features tales of serial killers, ghosts and the Gaelic festival that spawned Halloween. Guides are consistently lauded as gifted, humorous storytellers who make the excursions fun rather than frightening (though other tour-takers note some stories are graphic). Irish Day Tours' Cliffs of Moher tour makes for a great daytrip from Dublin. The tour departs the city at 6:50 a.m. Guides will take patrons through the iconic cliffs, stop in the charming village of Doolin at lunch time (though meals are not included in the cost of the trip), admire the rocky landscape of the Burren and spend some time wandering through Galway City before returning to Dublin around 7 p.m. Past visitors say the bus drivers and guides are highly entertaining and knowledgeable. Listen as skilled storytellers recount legends of terrible acts and sinister figures – including the doctor believed to have inspired novelist Bram Stoker's Dracula character – while being shuttled around Dublin to a graveyard, a church and other purportedly haunted sites. The walk begins at 7:30 p.m. at, appropriately enough, a pub: The Duke Dublin. Outings are offered every evening from April through October and Thursday through Sunday from November to March. 6:30am Depart Dublin Adare Rest stop We will be stopping in the picturesque town of Adare, renowned as one of Ireland’s prettiest towns. Built on the River Maigue it was an important location with its monastery, Abbey and Priory alongside the remains of a 12-century castle built by the O’Donovans. The main street has rows of thatched cottages and is home to the world-famous Adare Manor Golf Club. Adare is designated as a heritage town by the Irish government.

Killorglin Entering Killorglin we will get the chance to see a statue of a goat, King Puck, that celebrates Ireland’s oldest fair. The Puck Fair takes place every August and commemorates the saving of the town by a male goat from attack by the English. The festival has been running for over 400 years.

Glenbeigh Take the chance to stretch your legs and take a stroll along the golden sands of Rossbeigh Beach. Jutting out into Dingle Bay, the beach offers a stunning vista of the Wild Atlantic Ocean and the mountain ranges of Kerry.

Cahersiveen, Lunch Birthplace of Daniel O’Connell, Cahersiveen overlooks Valentia Bay. The old Police Station is a large building that they believe was built to plans that were intended for a location in India and got mixed up. After lunch, we will visit the ancient stone fort of Cahergall. These late bronze age forts are difficult to date as many have been built over several different periods. Dominating the horizon is a 25m circle with walls almost 4 m high and 5 m thick, possibly dating back to 1000BC.

Waterville The favourite holiday location of none other than the famous Charlie Chaplin, whom the village still celebrates with the annual festival in his honour.

Sneem Nestled between mountains and wild and rugged coast, Sneem offers some of the best views in the country. The village is split into two by the Sneem River with the respective sides being known as North Square and South Square. The river under the bridge has a cascade waterfall that gives some great opportunities for a photo stop.

Ladies view The scenery is breathtaking from Ladies View. Take in the marvellous panoramic views of the Killarney Valley and Lakes. This location was given the name after being visited by Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting when they visited here in 1861.

Torc Waterfall Take a short stroll through the moss-covered forest to this 20m high waterfall. Torc waterfall gets its name from the Irish word torc meaning boar and is steeped in Irish mythology. It is said that an enchanted boar was killed there by the legendary hero, Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool), the hunter-warrior of Irish mythology who led the Fianna warriors in the 3rd century.

Killarney town (overnight) We will spend the night in a traditional Irish B&B in Killarney town. This small vibrant ‘town in the park’ is the largest on the Ring of Kerry. With amazing places to eat you can sample all the local delights, visit the quaint shops or maybe just sit back in one of the wee local pubs, sip on a Guinness and listen to some Trad music.

Optional Jaunting car tour €13 to Rosses Castle Killarney is known for its ‘jaunting carts’ and what better way to start the day than with a ride on this traditional mode of transport? The driver will pick you up at the hotel after a hearty Irish breakfast and whisk you off to one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval castle on the shore of Lough Leane. Alternatively, you can travel in our Wild Rover bus.

Inch Beach Here you will have a chance to do a little beach-combing or maybe even a quick dip on the beautiful golden sands of Inch Beach. Stretching out into Dingle Bay and one of Ireland’s finest Blue Flag beaches, this beach is popular with surfers, swimmers and anglers. The Sand dunes here act as an important part of the local ecosystem supporting dozens of types of birds.

Dingle Town You’ll find it difficult to get more traditional than the town of Dingle. Centred around the quaint fishing port, Dingle offers a multitude of restaurants to choose from, as well as countless opportunities from visiting Dingle Distillery, wandering the streets, or taking a cruise to see Dingle’s most famous resident dolphin, Fungie. Here you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a wild dolphin that has been resident in the harbour for over 30 years and enjoys frolicking with the boats in the bay. You will have the opportunity to take lunch here in the place of your choice.

Slea Head Drive One of the most spectacular drives on the West Coast of Ireland, this loop drive west of Dingle is outstanding. The coastline consists of steep sea-cliffs, broken by sandy beaches, and the Blasket Islands, which lie to the west of the peninsula. These narrow roads are what you would expect from decades past.

Nenagh Castle On route to Dublin, we drop into the Market Town of Nenagh for a rest stop. We’ll stop close to the tallest and most impressive building in the town centre, the fully restored castle tower built in 1216, located right across the road from the original jail turned heritage centre.

We took the Red trail which overlooks the polygonal column formations, and midway turn left to some stone stairs which lead you down to the hexagonal shaped basaltic columns by the coast. This route is around 40 minutes one way. Then you can walk back up 15 mins by the easier Blue trail. You can opt to pay EUR1.20 or GBP1 to take the shuttle bus back up, which runs every 20 minutes. Go early to the Tour meet up venue before 6:45am as they let early birds queue up for their seats (except for 1st 2 rows reserved for elderly and pregnant guests). The lovely scenic atrim coast ride is spectacularly scenic. Dave is a humorous guide who explained about the sites, and joked, and kindly helped to take a few pictures, for us. The historical 500 years old Dunluce Castle remnants (set against a steep cliffside of the North Atlantic ocean) also make for gorgeous photographs. The Titanic Experience is a 2 hour interactive and immersive time, in a modern and expensive building. Marko is a safe and efficient driver. Highly recommended great Day Tour, to make new friends from other countries. We were blessed with mostly sunny / a tad cloudy but no rain weather. Kindly tip your guide and driver generously please. Ireland to tour Pakistan for white-ball series in 2025 for first time

Dublin [Ireland], : Cricket Ireland officially confirmed their first men's tour of Pakistan in August and September next year.

While the particular fixture of the white-ball tour has yet to be decided, Cricket Ireland announced that they will go to Pakistan next year for a tour tentatively scheduled for August/September.

The two sides are presently competing in a three-match T20I series in Ireland in preparation for next month's ICC T20 World Cup, and Cricket Ireland Chair Brian MacNeice met with PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi to discuss their 2025 visit to Pakistan.

MacNeice stated that the conversations were positive and that Ireland will travel to Pakistan next year, marking their men's team's first visit to the country.

"We are delighted to have welcomed Chairman Naqvi to Dublin and we had a very productive meeting. The presence of the PCB chairman in Ireland was very much appreciated and is a strong indicator of the excellent relationship between the two boards," MacNeice said as quoted bt ICC.

"Discussions were wide-ranging and included exploring men's, women's and Wolves-level fixtures in the future. I'm very pleased that we were able to agree a men's tour next year - this will be yet another historic first, coming after the tour to Pakistan by our senior women in 2022," he added.

The ongoing series between Ireland and Pakistan is now tied at one game apiece, with the series' third and final encounter planned for Tuesday in Dublin.

"The Pakistan squad have been excellent ambassadors for their country over the last week and have been very generous in their interactions with fans throughout their time in Ireland. We very much look forward to the deciding game in the series tomorrow and of course our meeting in the T20 World Cup next month," MacNeice added.

"The cricketing friendship between Ireland and Pakistan runs very deep - indeed, the first meeting between the two sides was in 1962 here in Dublin, and Pakistan has been our opponent for both our inaugural women's and men's Test matches. We look forward to this auspicious tour and thank Chairman Naqvi and the PCB for their ongoing friendship and support," he added.

The Pakistan Cricket Board first issued a statement claiming that Ireland will also play a Test series in Pakistan, which was not part of the FTP.

"Chairman Cricket Ireland said that the Irish team would visit Pakistan next year in August-September for a Test series and would also review the possibility of a women's team tour to Pakistan soon," the PCB statement said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Pakistan is currently in Ireland for a three-match T20I series. The teams have levelled the series at 1-1 and to crown the champion the series decider will be played on Tuesday.

Ireland to tour Pakistan for white-ball series in 2025 for first time

Cricket Ireland officially confirmed their first men's tour of Pakistan in August and September next year. While the particular fixture of the white-ball tour has yet to be decided, Cricket Ireland announced that they will go to Pakistan next year for a tour tentatively scheduled for August/September.

The two sides are presently competing in a three-match T20I series in Ireland in preparation for next month's ICC T20 World Cup, and Cricket Ireland Chair Brian MacNeice met with PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi to discuss their 2025 visit to Pakistan. MacNeice stated that the conversations were positive and that Ireland will travel to Pakistan next year, marking their men's team's first visit to the country.

"We are delighted to have welcomed Chairman Naqvi to Dublin and we had a very productive meeting. The presence of the PCB chairman in Ireland was very much appreciated and is a strong indicator of the excellent relationship between the two boards," MacNeice said as quoted bt ICC. "Discussions were wide-ranging and included exploring men's, women's and Wolves-level fixtures in the future. I'm very pleased that we were able to agree a men's tour next year - this will be yet another historic first, coming after the tour to Pakistan by our senior women in 2022," he added.

The ongoing series between Ireland and Pakistan is now tied at one game apiece, with the series' third and final encounter planned for Tuesday in Dublin. "The Pakistan squad have been excellent ambassadors for their country over the last week and have been very generous in their interactions with fans throughout their time in Ireland. We very much look forward to the deciding game in the series tomorrow and of course our meeting in the T20 World Cup next month," MacNeice added.

"The cricketing friendship between Ireland and Pakistan runs very deep - indeed, the first meeting between the two sides was in 1962 here in Dublin, and Pakistan has been our opponent for both our inaugural women's and men's Test matches. We look forward to this auspicious tour and thank Chairman Naqvi and the PCB for their ongoing friendship and support," he added. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) first issued a statement claiming that Ireland will also play a Test series in Pakistan, which was not part of the FTP.

"Chairman Cricket Ireland said that the Irish team would visit Pakistan next year in August-September for a Test series and would also review the possibility of a women's team tour to Pakistan soon," the PCB statement said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. Pakistan is currently in Ireland for a three-match T20I series. The teams have levelled the series at 1-1 and to crown the champion the series decider will be played on Tuesday. (ANI)
