How to use Cruise Control on Toyota Yaris

Cruise control helps to reduce fatigue when driving on freeways or long stretches of highways.

All the controls are located on a stalk at the lower right side of the steering wheel.

• Press the on/off button on the end of the stalk to activate the cruise control.
• The cruise control icon will appear in the instrument display.
• Then accelerate or decelerate to the desired speed and press the stalk down to set the Cruise Control speed.
• Once you’ve set the speed, if you want to increase it, move the stalk upwards and hold it until the desired speed is reached. Then release it.
• To reduce your speed, move the stalk down and hold it until the desired speed is reached. Then release it.
• If you want to cancel the cruise control temporarily, pull the stalk towards you or tap the brakes.
• To turn if off, just press the on/off button.

To use Cruise Control, turn it on first by pressing the button on the end of the control stalk behind the lower right side of the steering wheel. The green cruise control icon will appear in the instrument display to show the system is ready.

Then accelerate to the speed you want, and press the stalk down to set it. The SET indicator will appear underneath the CRUISE CONTROL icon to let you know you can take your foot off the accelerator.

If you need to increase your speed, lift and hold the stalk up until you reach the speed you want, and then release it.

To reduce the set speed, push the stalk down and hold it to slow down to your target speed, and then release it.

To temporarily suspend cruise control, pull the stalk towards you, or tap the brakes.

To resume the set speed, push the lever up briefly.

Toyota yaris: cruise control.

Use the cruise control to maintain a set speed without depressing the accelerator pedal.

■ Setting the vehicle speed

Press the “ON-OFF” button to activate the cruise control. Cruise control indicator will come on. Press the button again to deactivate the cruise control.

Accelerate or decelerate the vehicle to the desired speed, and push the lever down to set the speed. “SET” indicator will come on. The vehicle speed at the moment the lever is released becomes the set speed.

■ Adjusting the set speed

To change the set speed, operate the lever until the desired set speed is obtained.

Fine adjustment: Momentarily move the lever in the desired direction. Large adjustment: Hold the lever in the desired direction.

The set speed will be increased or decreased as follows:

Fine adjustment: By approximately 1 mph (1.6 km/h) each time the lever is operated. Large adjustment: The set speed can be increased or decreased continually until the lever is released.

■ Canceling and resuming the constant speed control

The speed setting is also canceled when the brakes are applied or the clutch pedal (manual transmission only) is depressed.

Resuming is available when the vehicle speed is more than approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).

■Cruise control can be set when

●The shift lever is in the D or range 3. (vehicles with an automatic transmission) ●Vehicle speed is above approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).

■Accelerating after setting the vehicle speed

●The vehicle can be accelerated normally. After acceleration, the set speed resumes. ●Even without canceling the cruise control, the set speed can be increased by first accelerating the vehicle to the desired speed and then pushing the lever down to set the new speed.

■Automatic cruise control cancelation

Cruise control will stop maintaining the vehicle speed in any of the following situations.

●Actual vehicle speed falls more than approximately 10 mph (16 km/h) below the preset vehicle speed. At this time, the memorized set speed is not retained. ●Actual vehicle speed is below approximately 25 mph (40 km/h). ●VSC is activated.

■If the cruise control indicator light flashes

Press the “ON-OFF” button once to deactivate the system, and then press the button again to reactivate the system. If the cruise control speed cannot be set or if the cruise control cancels immediately after being activated, there may be a malfunction in the cruise control system. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

■To avoid operating the cruise control by mistake

Switch the cruise control off using the “ON-OFF” button when not in use.

■Situations unsuitable for cruise control

Do not use cruise control in any of the following situations. Doing so may result in loss of control and could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

●In heavy traffic ●On roads with sharp bends ●On winding roads ●On slippery roads, such as those covered with rain, ice or snow ●On steep hills Vehicle speed may exceed the set speed when driving down a steep hill. ●When your vehicle is towing a trailer or during emergency towing

Has the 2018 Toyota Yaris get cruise control?

Toyota is aware that it is much simpler to build a dependable car with tried-and-true components than to attempt to ride the cutting edge. Although sometimes necessary, that philosophy has been overused in the Yaris. It appears to be years behind its rivals and other Toyotas.

Good little automobiles have experienced a revival during the last five to ten years. Newer models of the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta, and others illustrate that we can now manufacture desirable, well-rounded automobiles at an affordable price, despite the fact that they were frequently perceived as poorly built, unrefined cars for those who couldn’t buy something better.

For less than $19,335 each, the Corolla, Corolla iM, and Yaris iA feel like real contemporary automobiles with contemporary refinement.

I could overlook the harsh plastics everywhere because the class pricing necessitates the use of certain inexpensive materials, but most rivals at least attempt to give the interior a pleasing aesthetic with a few pieces of glossy trim or brightwork. Not so in this case, where the infotainment looks pasted in and there are large seams everywhere where panels were installed.

It also includes a rather peculiar collection of tools. Every Yaris comes with automatic high beams as standard equipment, but automated lights are not available. Given that installing automatic high beams is more difficult and expensive, that seems odd. The Toyota Entune infotainment system, which has been a pain to use since it began, is included in the basic versions, but cruise control is not.

Additionally, only high-end versions are equipped with an immobilizer, which assures that the engine won’t start if the key’s chip isn’t recognized. Its addition is practically free because it is basic anti-theft equipment.

The Yaris makes me lose all fondness for its manual transmission thanks to a clunky, ambiguous shifter and only five forward ratios. Even in this low-power class, the 106 horsepower produced by the 1.5-liter engine is pitiful. Additionally, it uses a loud and crude method of delivering its meager power. While the floaty handling doesn’t quite match the bouncy ride, road and wind noise may be heard inside the cabin.

The Toyota Yaris from 2019 has cruise control, right?

In a recent press release, Toyota announced its plan to replace the Toyota Yaris iA with merely a regular Toyota Yaris in the existing lineup. The Toyota Yaris and Yaris iA will be combined to become the 2019 Toyota Yaris, but with a few nice additions to tie everything together. For more information, keep reading!

Toyota Yaris Features and Trim Levels

The new 2019 Toyota Yaris will come in three trim levels, L, LE, and XLE, as opposed to the previous Toyota Yaris iA’s single trim level. Numerous great features are available on all of these model levels, including as a cruise control, rearview camera, and 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. These features are all included as standard equipment in every model.

Another wonderful standard feature for a car at this budget is the low-speed pre-collision system, but if you want adaptive cruise control or blind-spot monitoring, you’ll need to seek elsewhere. Whether Apple CarPlayTM or Android AutoTM will be offered, as they were in the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, is unknown.

Toyota Yaris Exterior Changes

With the exception of a fantastic new honeycomb feature in the grille and a piano black and chrome trim, the 2019 Toyota Yaris largely retains its previous appearance. 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and outside heated mirrors with LED turn signals are standard on the LE and XLE trim levels. The exterior of the new 2019 Toyota Yaris is elevated by all these fantastic features.

Although the price of the 2019 Toyota Yaris has not yet been disclosed, it is anticipated to be in the same range as the outgoing model, which starts at $15,950. Expect to see the new Toyota Yaris shortly; it will probably arrive in showrooms in the fall of 2018!

How does the cruise control icon appear?

The controls needed to operate it are often located on the steering wheel or one of the car’s indicator stalks.

You’ll frequently need to depress a button labelled with the cruise control icon, which is a speedometer symbol with an arrow pointing in a specific direction (seen on the stalk below).

The following buttons are typically used to activate cruise control:

Cancel Instead of the off switch, there should be a button that just pauses the system, in case you get stopped behind a slower vehicle. The similar effect is produced by pressing the brake pedal.

Resume or Res After pausing the cruise control, press here to resume it. The vehicle will resume moving at the predetermined pace.

Up and Down, plus and minus These change the preset speed of the cruise control. You can hit the minus button to slow down, for instance, if you’re on a highway and come to a set of roadworks with a lower speed restriction.

Using the brake pedal will immediately pause the system and cause the car to slow down just as if the system were turned off, allowing you to override cruise control whenever necessary. The speed of the car will rise if the accelerator is pressed. The cruise control typically stays on when you release the gas pedal and brings the vehicle back to its predetermined pace.

How does cruise control work?

Each vehicle model’s cruise control differs differently, however the majority of systems function quite similarly. Start cruising by following these 5 steps:

1. Increase your speed: Cruise control is best used on a freeway or dual carriageway where you can maintain a consistent pace of at least 30 mph without stopping frequently.

2. Turn on cruise control: Once you are traveling at the speed you want to be (while staying inside the posted limit), activate the cruise control system. The controls for it often sit on or behind the steering wheel, and when it’s turned on, a light will be seen on your dashboard.

It’s important to identify the buttons before using cruise control for the first time in order to avoid fumbling around while driving and potentially dangerous situations.

3. Set the cruise control: Press the set button after turning on the system. Your car will receive this communication and maintain the present speed. The dashboard indicator will turn green in the majority of cars as a result. Once the cruise control is in place, you can let up on the gas and the vehicle should continue to go at the same speed.

4. To accelerate: To increase the vehicle’s speed, most cars have a “up” arrow or “+” button. The system will typically be overridden if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

5. To slow down, either use the brake pedal or the down arrow on the cruise control system. As soon as the brake is engaged, the cruise control will turn off for safety reasons.

The “cancel” button has several functions, including pausing cruise control so you may regain full control without the system completely turning off. The speed you chose to cruise at should be maintained.

How is a Toyota cruise used?

There are more buttons and gadgets in our cars than we sometimes know what to do with. How to operate the cruise control on a Toyota is one of the features that drivers inquire about most frequently. Fortunately, the procedures are simple and will improve the effectiveness and regularity of long distance travel.

Instructions for using Toyota cruise control

With the stock located on the right side of the driver’s steering wheel, cruise control can be activated. Additionally, indicators that reflect whether cruise control is engaged and the selected speed are displayed on the Toyota’s Multi-Information Display (MID).

• Push the ON/OFF button on the stock in order to turn the system on.
• On MID, the cruise control icon will appear.
• Boost or brake to the desired speed.
• To set speed, press the stock down.
• On MID, a set indicator will appear.
• Press stock up to accelerate in one-mile increments to boost speed.
• Hold the stock up continually while you accelerate in bigger steps.
• To adjust speed, release the stock.
• By pressing the stock down, you can slow down in one-mile increments.
• Hold down the stock continually to reduce speed in larger steps.
• Pull the stock in your direction or apply the brakes to turn off the cruise control.

How can I tell if the cruise control on my car is on?

First, assess the highway’s driving conditions. Inclement weather is not intended for usage with cruise control. When determining whether to use your car’s cruise control, use caution. Before engaging cruise control, especially if it is your first time using the device, make sure there are no impending obstructions.

• Even if the road appears to be empty, it would be a bad idea to use cruise control in such weather.

Increase your speed. The legal limit for traveling on an interstate is often between 55 and 70 miles per hour. The cruise control speed range is great. Never try to increase the cruise control speed on your car past the speed limit. This is reckless and dangerous.

Turn on cruise control once you’ve reached the appropriate speed. The cruise control system’s buttons are often found on the steering wheel in cars. To prevent an accident, identify these buttons by consulting your owner’s manual when the automobile is not in use.

The mechanism is often activated by pushing a larger button labeled “cruise.”

Set the cruise control after the cruise control system has been turned on. Most likely, this will only involve pressing another steering-wheel button. You can take your foot off the accelerator after you’ve set the cruise control. The vehicle must maintain its speed.

Keep a close eye on the road when operating a vehicle that is being accelerated by a cruise control system. You will need to turn off cruise control before you slow down or stop, which will cause a delay in your reaction time.

Most models either feature additional buttons or let the driver temporarily press the accelerator pedal while in cruise control.

Either hit the corresponding cruise control system button or swiftly press the brake to slow down. Almost all car models automatically deactivate the cruise control as soon as the brake is applied as a safety measure.

When driving on the interstate, using cruise control is a terrific method to manage your speed. By avoiding abrupt accelerations and decelerations, setting your vehicle’s cruise control to a suitable speed will also cut down on fuel use. Be warned that if you are prone to driving fatigue, it is not a good idea to utilize cruise control. Many motorists believe that being able to unwind their legs while driving and not having to pay strict attention to their speed increases the risk of driver tiredness.

Toyota Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (19 Popular Models)

Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become standard in many models, including Toyotas.

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

Toyota Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 toyota corolla.

Toyota Corolla has had standard adaptive cruise control in the eleventh generation’s final three models (2017 to 2019) and the twelfth generation (2020 to present).

2009 to 2016 Toyota Corolla models only had cruise control in the higher trims, while 2008 and earlier ones had the feature as optional equipment.

#2 Toyota Yaris

The discontinued Toyota Yaris had cruise control as standard in 2019 and 2020; the 2012 to 2018 models only had the system in the higher trims.

Used car shoppers eyeing a 2010 or 2011 Toyota Yaris need to know that cruise control was optional in both model years.

2009 and earlier Toyota Yaris did not have any cruise control system.

#3 Toyota Camry & Toyota Camry Hybrid

The midsize Toyota Camry has had adaptive cruise control as a standard provision since 2018.

2001 to 2017 models had conventional cruise control, while Toyota Camry sedans before that did not have the system.

Toyota Camry Hybrids have had the cruise control system as standard since 2007 and adaptive cruise control since 2018.

#4 Toyota Avalon & Avalon Hybrid

Adaptive cruise control has been standard equipment in the Toyota Avalon since 2017; Avalons before that only had basic cruise control.

Like the gasoline-only model, the Avalon Hybrid has had cruise control as standard since its 2013 debut, although 2017 saw the model adopting the enhanced adaptive cruise control.

The hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Mirai has had adaptive cruise control as standard since 2018.

#6 Toyota Prius & Prius Prime

The leader in hybrid technology, Toyota Prius, adopted the adaptive cruise control system as standard in 2017 and has maintained it since.

Toyota Prius hatchbacks from 2004 to 2016 had the conventional cruise control.

The plug-in hybrid, Toyota Prius Prime, has had the adaptive cruise control system as standard since its 2017 debut.

#7 Toyota GR Supra

All Toyota GR Supra coupes (introduced in 2020) have standard cruise control.

#8 Toyota GR86

All Toyota GR86 coupes (introduced in 2022) have the cruise control system as standard.

Toyota SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#9 toyota c-hr.

Adaptive cruise control has been standard in every Toyota C-HR subcompact since the model’s 2018 debut.

#10 Toyota Corolla Cross

Adaptive cruise control is standard in all Toyota Corolla Cross models.

#11 Toyota RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid & RAV4 Prime

Toyota RAV4, one of the best-selling compact SUVs, has had adaptive cruise control as standard since 2017.

Toyota RAV4 SUVs from 2004 to 2016 had the conventional cruise control, while those prior to that did not have the system.

Adaptive cruise control has been standard in the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid from 2017 onwards.

All Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrids have the adaptive cruise control system as standard since its 2021 introduction.

#12 Toyota Venza

The midsize Toyota Venza SUV has had adaptive cruise control as standard since its re-introduction in 2021.

Older Toyota Venza models before 2016 had the more-basic cruise control instead.

#13 Toyota Highlander & Highlander Hybrid

The three-row midsize Toyota Highlander had adaptive cruise control in 2017 and onwards.

Older Toyota Highlanders before 2017 (down to 2001) had the conventional cruise control.

Toyota Highlander Hybrids follow the regular model’s provision: adaptive cruise control from 2017 and cruise control in previous models.

#14 Toyota 4Runner

The off-road capable Toyota 4Runner had had adaptive cruise control as standard since 2020, while models before that had conventional cruise control.

#15 Toyota Sequoia

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) has been standard in all Toyota Sequoia models since 2018, and prior models had the more-basic cruise control.

Toyota Trucks with Adaptive Cruise Control

#16 toyota tacoma.

The rugged Toyota Tacoma has had adaptive cruise control as standard since 2018, including the SR, SR5, and TRD.

Although the adaptive type wasn’t available in the 2015 to 2017 Toyota Tacoma, the upper trims still had basic cruise control.

#17 Toyota Tundra

Toyota Tundra is the Japanese automaker’s full-size pickup truck and has had adaptive cruise control since 2018.

From 2001 to 2017, Toyota Tundras had a conventional cruise control system.

Toyota Minivan with Adaptive Cruise Control

#18 toyota sienna.

As a family hauler expected to be a comfortable highway cruiser, the Toyota Sienna has had adaptive cruise control as a standard provision since 2018.

Toyota Siennas from 2001 to 2017 had the conventional cruise control instead.

Installed cruise control in my 2009 Toyota Yaris, I feel for what I had to install the bat handle, plus a couple of wires, that it was a bit pricey. Also instruction pictures were not easy to see, pic's retaken way to many times. Had to call customer service to figure out the instructions. Although the install came out fine and is working like it should.

Hi. March 23 Yaris Cross. I have two forms of cruise control: one is radar based and intended for use on such as motorways, to keep pace with vehicles in your lane. I would like to ask other owners about the second system where the main switch is toggled 'downwards', and then the second switch adjusted to a desired speed. I dont use the second method just the first with radar controll most of the time not even on a motorway.

I do turn down its sensertivity from 3 bars for 40/50 mph roads.

I love it on long roads with 20 mph speed limit then I down to 1 bar depending on number of parked cars on the side of the road.

Hi JohnD2, the "second system" as you call it is the speed limiter. Once set at a speed the car will not exceed that until you hit the main switch again to turn it off.  Lowest setting is 20mph.  The

I find it useful around town and in average speed camera areas.

Still don’t understand why the Toyota system doesn’t adjust with the traffic sign recognition, as in my Ford, mind you, it doesn’t always work, wether that’s ford or not I don’t know, I assume you could just set the adaptive cruise to say, 30mph around town and let the system work out the speed, ( providing there’s something in front when in a 20 zone, ) 

I believe that traffic sign compulsory speed limiting will be introduced in the future. I read ages ago Europe was going to introduce it and we would follow.  Had a quick look and can't find the article I read though.  I would assume, like cruise control, kick-down would override the limiter?

re. the cruise control, the new Yaris has:

• Radar Cruise (Press Up once)
• Normal Cruise (Hold Up for 3-5 seconds) 
• Speed limiter (Press Down once)

I never understood the point of the speed limiter, esp. as you say it doesn't tie into the speed sign recognition, but some people find it useful to set so they don't accidentally go over speed. If I'm in a situation where I can go faster than the speed limit (Rare down here!) I usually just flick the cruise control on.

The Radar Cruise can be tied into the road sign system - It's a selectable option in the main dash settings, and puts a green box around the speed sign when enabled. The idea is when the speed limit changes, the car picks it up from the sign and you press up or down on the Res+/Set- rocker and it'll jump to that speed instead of you having to e.g. press downdowndowndown.

However it's a bit buggy and doesn't really improve things since it's just as fast to cancel, lift off, and set to the new speed.

The Normal Cruise control mode is literally just set the speed and the car holds that speed. It's more consistent than the Radar cruise and I find it more fuel efficient as it uses the engine far less at lower speeds than the Radar cruise for some reason, but unlike the Radar Cruise it will drive you into things without slowing down so it has fewer situations you can safely use it in unless you constantly manage it.

@JohnD2 After you’ve reached the desired speed don’t you have to press “set” and the system then maintains that speed with your foot off ?

I can't wait.

Yesterday I drove in 30, 40, 60 and derestricted zones.

My car recognised 5 and 10 zones.   Google showed one road at 60, the car displayed 50 and there was not a limit sign in sight.  After a couple of miles there was a 50 repeater with the derestricted sign a couple of hundred yards on.

When it comes in there will be an outcry abd chaos with poor signage to blame.   Our council refuses to cut foliage which leaves many signs hidden.

Yep, my Mazda MX5 is pretty good (almost faultless) in reading signs, so it can be done.  Where it misses one (40 goes to 60 etc) due to foliage, then after half-mile it checks against GPS/Map and resets itself.  Pretty clever, I just don't want it to take over the throttle!

A few wheelie bins round here have speed signs. 

Actually a brilliant idea.   Put 20 up and traffic would automatically slow down  on bin days.

Solid Foundation

4Runner is all-new from the ground up and is built on Toyota’s tough TNGA-F global truck platform that is shared with Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. This platform utilizes a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame and features a multi-link coil rear and double wish-bone front suspension.

The adoption of the innovative TNGA-F platform not only adds strength, but it also improves the vehicle’s ride comfort and on-road manners. Passengers feel the benefits of this new platform, even when riding in the available third row. The enhanced frame, paired with the powerful i-FORCE MAX powertrain, allows 4Runner to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Evolving the Legacy

“Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation,” says Calty President, Kevin Hunter. “Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner’s go anywhere purpose”.

The Michigan-based CALTY design team spearheaded the design of this all-new 4Runner. Designers pulled inspiration from the past while also focusing on the future. The all-new 4Runner was designed alongside the Tacoma and shares a family resemblance but is unique in its own way. Both share inspiration from the desert racing scene and have a rugged-with-a-purpose appearance. In a nod to the first and second generations of 4Runners, designers were able to bring back the legacy “wrap over” quarter glass, and the popular roll-down rear window remains etched into the vehicle’s DNA. The design team meticulously labored to achieve the ideal interior design. They sought to achieve a vehicle with ease of operation and a functional interface that strikes a pure balance of modern sophistication and capable authenticity. For example, second-row tumble seats help increase 4Runners interior versatility and maximizes cargo floor usage.

i-FORCE Power MAXed

This next chapter of 4Runner offers two powerful and efficient turbocharged 2.4 litre four-cylinder powertrains including the i-FORCE engine with 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque that is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited grades will come standard with the i-FORCE powertrain.

4Runner’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is available on TRD Off-Road, while standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum models. This powertrain pairs the turbocharged 2.4-litre engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack that creates a total system output of up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, the most powerful powertrain ever offered on 4Runner.

Trail Ready

4Runner is synonymous with rugged capability. In its latest form, 4Runner continues to add increased capability to an already incredible legacy. The newly available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism increases suspension articulation at the push of a button. This feature allows the vehicle to flex while helping keep tires in contact with the trail. 4Runner raises the bar in another area with up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles. The available Multi-Terrain Monitor system aids the driver allowing them to see potential hazards on the centre display.

In Canada, 4Runner will be offered in part-time 4WD or Full-time 4WD, both matted to an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range along with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). An electronic locking rear differential is standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter grades. The Limited is offered with an available full-time four-wheel-drive system with a centre locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models, while this setup is standard on Platinum grades.

The Multi-Terrain Select system now functions in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. This offers adjustable settings to help control wheel spin on a variety of terrain such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. 4Runner also adopts the new, quieter CRAWL Control function that acts as a low-speed, off-road cruise control that allows the driver to focus on steering. When traction is extremely limited, the available electronically activated locking rear differential can help split power 50/50 to the rear wheels. Downhill Assist Control is another off-road feature available and helps the driver navigate descents by limiting the speed of the vehicle. 

A Grade for Everyone

4Runner expands its grade offering to provide customers with more choices than ever before. In Canada, seven grades will be available including SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The Trailhunter grade has been added to the line up to allow owners to go further. 4Runner’s capability and durability have made it a fan favorite of overlanders, and now adventure seekers have a turnkey solution with a manufacturer-developed overland rig straight from the factory. Toyota collaborated with a number of off-road component companies to make the fit and finish that much better. For example, the Trailhunter will feature ARB's Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs, along with a uniquely co-designed ARB Roof Rack. The OME shocks along with the 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires boost up Trailhunter an additional two inches in the front and one and a half inches in the rear. A standard low-profile high-mount air intake sources cleaner air for the i-FORCE MAX powertrain. Trailhunter adds protection that include rock rails and high strength steel skid plates for serious off-the-grid-adventure capabilities. The Trailhunter is also equipped with a heritage grill with bronze “TOYOTA” lettering and an integrated 20-inch LED light bar that is complemented by colour selectable RIGID LED fog lamps. A seriously powerful 2400W AC inverter provides juice to two locations in the cabin and the rear cargo area. Trailhunter is ready for customization with other Toyota accessory offerings using three easy to reach auxiliary switches that are pre-wired throughout the vehicle.

The 2025 4Runner introduces its first-ever Platinum grade which offers customers a high-end, luxury experience with all the capability you expect in a 4Runner. Platinum slots above the Limited grade by adding unique black exterior styling elements, heated second-row seats, a standard tow tech package, Head-Up Display and automatic rain sensing wipers.

Latest Tech

4Runner receives Toyota’s latest technology with new screens. A new 8-inch or available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen displays Toyota Multimedia, which is designed and engineered by Toyota’s Connected Technologies team. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, and pairs well with the available Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output. A USB-C data and charging port is integrated on the right side of the multimedia touchscreen, and dual USB-C charging ports are included in the front row and available for the rear passengers. A 7-inch gauge cluster is standard on lower grades and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard on higher grades.

Smart Key System with push-button start is standard on all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key on select grades connects with compatible smartphones to allow vehicle entry, and vehicle starting (4G network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared with others to give more control over vehicle access rather than giving someone the physical key.

Rugged Choice

The all-new youthful and dynamic 4Runner nicely rounds out Toyota’s rugged lineup of tough body-on-frame vehicles. From the full-size Tundra to the iconic off-road legend Land Cruiser, customers now have five fresh trucks to choose from. These vehicles give customers more choice when it comes to finding a vehicle that can keep up with their dynamic lifestyles. They are designed to handle almost anything the elements throw their way, and their incredible capability gives owners the tools they need to get out and discover all the hidden wonders the world has to offer.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Standard

All 2025 4Runner models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, Toyota’s suite of active safety and convenience systems. This suite of features includes:

• Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
• Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
• Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
• Lane Tracing Assist
• Road Sign Assist
• Automatic High Beams
• Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist is now a part of Toyota Safety Sense. Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) uses the vehicle’s camera and radar, when system operating conditions are met, to provide gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. PDA can also provide gentle braking into curves. Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different circumstances.

Including the addition of Proactive Driving Assist, the Toyota Safety Sense features have been enhanced for TSS 3.0:

• The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has enhanced detection capabilities thanks to new system sensors. It receives enhanced intersection support with improved detection capability in certain circumstances. In addition to pedestrian and bicyclist detection, this system now includes the capability to detect a motorcyclist.
• Lane Departure Alert will now provide Steering Assist as well as enhanced lane recognition that includes detection of certain 3D objects, like guardrails, that may be used to help define the lane.
• Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will have Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting, from the previously available three. Enhanced vehicle detection allows for the ability to detect more than one preceding vehicle, as well as vehicles in adjacent lanes. This helps the system to provide smoother, more natural speed adjustments, especially when the driver changes lanes.
• Lane Tracing Assist requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled for it to function. The system requires detectable lane markings in order to function. Like Lane Departure Alert, lane recognition is enhanced over prior TSS generations. In addition to lane centering, this system also helps provide more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes. It works by offsetting the vehicles’ driving path with minor steering adjustments while keeping the vehicle within its lane.
• An Emergency Driving Stop System is a new function of Lane Tracing Assist. It’s designed to monitor the driver’s inputs, such as steering operation, to determine if they’re inattentive or non-responsive, such as during a medical emergency. This feature is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn’t respond to alerts to take control.
• Road Sign Assist is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, other available features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.

The 2025 4Runner will be built in Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara plant in Japan and will arrive in Canada in the Fall of 2024.

Beyond Zero Vision

As part of Toyota’s diverse portfolio approach toward a carbon-neutral future, 4Runner is the latest hybrid offering in the lineup to wear the Beyond Zero badge. Very soon, Toyota will offer 19 electrified vehicles for customers to choose from. 2025 Toyota 4Runner takes the hybrid plunge

On Tuesday, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner debuted with an available hybrid powertrain, modern technology, and new Trailhunter and Platinum trims all while maintaining the key design and capabilities that make the 4Runner an icon.

When it goes on sale later this year, the 2025 4Runner’s lineup will expand to encompass a dizzying array of nine trims including SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. 

Pricing will be announced closer to the 4Runner’s on-sale date.

2025 4Runner downsizes to turbo-4s

Say goodbye to the tried and true 4.0-liter V-6. Every 2025 4Runner will be powered by a turbo-4 powertrain, but some will be hybrids.

Most models will be powered by a 2.4-liter turbo-4 rated at 278 hp and 317 hp lb-ft of torque. But TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum models will come standard with a hybrid version of this engine that mates an electric motor to the transmission for a combined output of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can option the hybrid engine on TRD Off-Road and Limited models. Every 4Runner will feature an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota 4Runner aims off-road

The 4Runner has been modernized, but seemingly not at the expense of off-road capability.

The ninth-generation 4Runner remains a body-on-frame SUV, but it now rides on a modern frame. The TNGA-F platform the 4Runner now rides on is shared with the Lexus GX , Toyota Land Cruiser and Sequoia SUVs along with the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks . The new powertrains with their improved performance will enable up to a 6,000-pound tow rating. 

Like before, rear-wheel drive will be standard while part-time or full-time four-wheel drive will be available. Moving into this century, the 4Runner’s four-wheel-drive system is electronically engaged with a switch. Most 4Runners feature a limited-slip rear differential, but TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter models gain a rear locking differential. Confusingly, only the high-zoot Platinum models get full-time four-wheel drive with a locking center differential, which is all optional on Limited models.

The 4Runner retains its independent front suspension and coil rear springs paired with a solid rear axle. TRD Pro models use 2.5-inch diameter Fox shocks with remote reservoirs to battle heat dissipation.

The new Trailhunter model rides on ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks with external piggyback remote reservoirs. A full set of skid plates underneath the Trailhunter covers everything from the front bumper back to behind the transfer case should the bottom of the 4Runner make contact with the earth. The shocks paired with 33-inch Toyo Open Country All Terrain tires give the Trailhunter a 2.0-inch lift over standard 4Runners.

With up to 9.2 inches of ground clearance, 32-degree approach, and 24-degree departure angle, the latest 4Runner is a mixed bag. The current 4Runner had up to 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 33-degree approach, and a 26-degree departure angle. But the current 4Runner rides on a shorter 109.8-inch wheelbase compared to the new 4Runner’s 112.2-inch wheelbase, which should pay large dividends in terms of ride quality. A new available electronic disconnecting sway bar should help maximize wheel articulation.

4Runner looks evolutionary

A quick look at the 4Runner and it’s obvious what this SUV is. While it retains the iconic look with punched-out flares, a tall greenhouse, and blunt front and rear ends, the front end takes on the look of the Tacoma. The headlights and grille shape are similar, and the hilariously large chin spoiler on the non off-road models can be removed with nine bolts, but it will affect fuel economy by 1 or 2 mpg. The rear windows wrap over the roofline in a nod to the first-gen 4Runner and the rear tailgate glass electronically drops down into the tailgate to haul longer items.

Both Trailhunter and TRD Pro models feature Rigid LED fog lights integrated into the front ends along with an LED light bar mounted in the center of the grille, which the latter puts out 10,000 lumens (notably about double the output of the light bars on the larger Tundra and Sequoia).

Inside, the dashboard is almost identical to the Tacoma pickup truck with either an 8.0- or 14.0-inch touchscreen perched front and center. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard. A 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster will be standard while higher trims will upgrade to a 12.3-inch display. Lower trim models feature acres of hard plastic while upper trim models cover the hard plastic with soft-touch bits and leather. Hybrid models will make loading cargo into the rear end more of a task thanks to a higher liftover height due to the battery pack. The rear seat back manually reclines for long road trips, and Platinum models feature heated rear seats. A head-up display will be available. Trailhunter models feature a 2,400-watt inverter for power during off-road adventures.

4Runner features safety as standard

Every 2025 4Runner will come standard with modern safety tech including automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitors will be available.
